DIY patchwork quilt made from upholstery fabric. How to sew a blanket with your own hands: types, materials, patterns, technology, master classes. Fabrics are divided into artificial and natural

Remember we wrote about hygge style? How did you not read? Be sure to read and get inspired by this lifestyle and the philosophy of organizing a Scandinavian interior. The philosophy is very simple: coziness, comfort, nothing superfluous, nothing that could irritate, distract or tire.

Patchwork bedspread in the interior

Maximum of soft and comfortable things, a lot of textiles, homely, natural materials. The house is calm and safe, friends gather here, it’s not boring to be here yourself, curled up in your favorite handmade blanket and immersed in dreams. By the way, about handmade and bedspread. We offer to bring this luxurious picture to life and create a patchwork patchwork quilt with your own hands.

What materials are needed for a patchwork bedspread?

Well, let's start by defining the concept of patchwork. This is a technique that allows you to sew a whole blanket, or rug, or even a bag, clothing, or stole from many different small scraps. Such products are not only warm and therefore practical, but very stylish and authentic, which means they can decorate the interior. We will sew a blanket. What we need:

  • remnants of various fabrics (it is desirable that they be of approximately the same quality, or at least the same thickness);
  • ruler, pencil;
  • scissors;
  • fleece;
  • fabric for the wrong side (denim can be used);
  • thread, needle or sewing machine;
  • for a more complex option you will need a diagram.

Technique for creating a bedspread from scraps

For starters, you can try sewing DIY patchwork blanket from squares. Then you don’t have to think about the pattern and sewing the bedspread will be easier.

You need to cut out many identical squares from the scraps - use a pencil and ruler so as not to make mistakes in the sizes.

If you have a sewing machine, the process will go much faster. Sew the squares in rows, and then sew the rows themselves. When the fabric is ready, it needs to be ironed from the inside to straighten the seams.

Pattern of a patchwork bedspread

Then you need to measure the item to cut the appropriate fleece fabric. Now place the blanket face up on the fleece.

The next step is to also cut out a fabric from denim or any other fabric - this will be the inside of the blanket. Next, lay the denim right side down on the fleece and blanket stack.

Your stack can be basted a little and then topstitched. Leave a hole in one of the corners so that the blanket can be turned inside out. If you did everything correctly, you will have denim on one side, a quilt front on the other, and fleece on the inside. The hole must be sewn up with hidden seams and the finished product must be ironed again.

Patchwork quilt pattern

If you want to increase the size of the blanket, then at the assembly stage you can lay plain strips of fabric between the squares. Now you have a finished patchwork quilt.

DIY patchwork blanket: using patterns

A more complex pattern will require precision cutting and a diamond eye. First, study your stock of scraps: what material is plentiful, what is less, and what is generally in short supply. Next, you can come up with a diagram yourself by drawing it on a sheet of paper with paints or pencils, or take ready-made templates.

Remember that it is most convenient to sew the flaps in blocks, and then sew these blocks together. Remember to leave seam allowances, otherwise you will end up with a product that is half the size you expect.

Patchwork style: bedspread in different techniques

More precisely, the execution technique remains the same, but the products will differ from each other in appearance.

Sewing a quilt is a serious task. It can scare off many people due to its complexity. But some methods of assembling a patchwork quilt can be easily mastered by a novice needlewoman. I suggest sewing a blanket using one of the varieties of the “crazy” technique. I looked through all the M.K. Quilting Fairs and noticed that it seems like no one has shown this technique yet. I didn't invent it, of course.

So let's get started.

Look at the title photo. Although this is almost not noticeable, in fact this blanket consists of 30x30 cm squares. This means that our task is to make 35 squares for a blanket measuring 210x150 cm. (I do not take into account sewing in the finishing strip. You can calculate the calculation for a blanket with a stripe do it yourself)
Let's assume that our blanket will contain 6 types of different colors of fabric (combinable with each other, of course).

Cut out 6 squares with a side of 45x45 cm from fabric of each color. One patchwork square will be superfluous - you can then sew a pillow) How much fabric you will need is easy to calculate, knowing its width. For example, with a fabric width of 110 cm, like patchwork fabrics, you will need 140 cm of each color (5 cm is a reserve for every fireman). The strips remaining from the excess width can be used for finishing.
By the way, if the fabric is not special for patchwork, but ordinary chintz or calico, then it must be washed and ironed before work. Or at least iron it thoroughly with a steamer so that it shrinks before cutting, and not later in the finished product.

For the back side of the blanket, we will take one whole piece - 160-170 cm with a width of 220 cm. As you can see, we take the fabric for the bottom with a margin of 10-20 cm. We will really need this margin when we start quilting the blanket and the layers will “run away” "
Well, the padding polyester, of course, is the same size - in 1 or 2 layers.

We cut the squares and put them in a neat stack, alternating colors - 1st-2nd-3rd-4th-5th-6th-1st-2nd-3rd-4th-... etc.
Now cut this layer cake along an arbitrary line:

You can do this with scissors, of course... But you will suffer... Therefore, it’s better to use this:

And, of course, it is more convenient to cut not the entire stack, but in parts of 4-6 layers, using the first cut square as a template.
Did you cut it? Now we do this: we take one fragment from above and move it down under a stack of the same fragments.

It turns out that in our cut stack of squares at the top there remains one fragment of the 1st color and 1 fragment of the 2nd color.

We sit down at the machine and sew all the squares along the cut line. Then we take it all to the ironing board and carefully smooth out the seams on all squares, either flat ironing or to one side. Yes, yes, no matter how tedious it may be, we must iron EVERY seam before moving on to the next one.

Let's fold our squares again neat-neat in a small pile. If, during the process of stitching and ironing, you folded the squares in the same order as they went, then now we have before us the same stack of now sewn fragments, in which a square of the 1st and 2nd colors lies on top.
We take a ruler and a knife in our hands and again cut the entire stack along an arbitrary line (you can cross the first seam).

And again we move one of the top fragments down under a stack of the same fragments. We sew and iron the fragments, not forgetting to carefully place them again in the same order (now it is better to combine them not along the cut edge of the squares, but along the seams).
The further steps, I think, are clear: you need to do this operation with cutting, shifting underneath, stitching and ironing as many times as you need. In my opinion, the optimal number of seams is 6-10 - approximately half in horizontal and vertical directions.

For greater “mixing” of colors, you can place not one, but 2-3 fragments underneath.

You see, after the first shift, I ended up with 3 blue shreds side by side. I moved another piece to the bottom of the stack to reduce the number of identical scraps.

After ironing the last seam, we will get a stack of patchwork elements that no longer resemble even squares. Our task is to bring them into proper form - trim the edges so as to obtain squares with a side of 32 cm. Using a roller knife, you can cut 3-4 squares at a time, just be careful that they are folded evenly.

Well, we have the required number of squares from which we will assemble the blanket.

Gathering and stitching.

Assembly methods may vary. For example, I prefer to first assemble the entire front part of the blanket and then quilt it as a whole - front side + padding polyester + bottom side. But with such a canvas it is VERY inconvenient to struggle with the machine. You can quilt individual squares by cutting the padding polyester and fabric for the lower part into squares with a slightly larger side (during the quilting process, the layers shift and after trimming the edges, you can end up with a square much smaller than the intended size).

Then the quilted and evenly trimmed squares need to be combined into one fabric. This can be done by using narrow strips of fabric or braid prepared in advance to cover the seam sections. It is convenient to assemble in this order - first sew strips of 4 or 6 squares in one strip, then connect the strips.

If you want to sew in a finishing strip like in the title photo, then the calculation is as follows: the width of the strip that goes around the middle part (the middle part is 2x4 squares) is equal to half the width of the square. That is, if the finished size of the square is 30x30 cm plus 1 cm on each side for seam allowances, then the width of the finishing strip should be 15 cm plus 1 cm for seams. Well, you can make any width of the border along the edge of the blanket)

If you plan to assemble “whole canvases” and not individual quilted squares, then, as I wrote above, for the wrong side of the blanket we take a canvas slightly larger than the upper patchwork part. Place it face down on the floor; you can secure the edges to the floor with tape. Then we spread the padding polyester, which should also be slightly larger than the top part. Place the patchwork piece on top, face up. We straighten out all the folds and irregularities well and fasten all the layers of this cake together with pins.

It is best to use special pins for quilting (the kind that are curved, with a clasp), but I use ordinary tailor’s pins, you just hit them more often. The more pins, the better, over the entire area of the blanket. After this you can start stitching. The simplest thing is to sew with a regular stitch along the connecting seams - this is called “split seam”. You can use special curly stitches for quilting.

Well, if you are not new to this matter, you can use and free-wheeling stitch. Hand stitching is rightfully considered the best.

After quilting, cut off the excess padding polyester and bottom fabric at the edges and finish the edge of the blanket with a wide edging, which can also consist of pieces of the same fabrics, or it can be a solid strip - plain or with a suitable pattern.

Save so you don't lose

A patchwork quilt is one of the simplest projects in the patchwork style. To make it, you do not need to use complex shapes and transitions. You can make a cute bedspread using a regular fabric rectangle, square or triangle as a basis. It will become a real highlight of the interior of a cottage or apartment, and can also be used as a picnic blanket. Even novice needlewomen can make a blanket from scraps with their own hands.

Classic patchwork quilt

Schematic images for sewing a blanket from scraps with your own hands can often be found in needlework magazines or on specialized websites.

It is preferable for beginning needlewomen to use ready-made step-by-step diagrams rather than making intricate drawings on their own. To work, you can use the following simple schemes:

Step 2. Horizontal rows should be sewn. To do this, the fragments need to be folded with their front surfaces on top of each other, starting from the rightmost piece, that is, each square should be placed on top of the one to the left of it. All blanks must be sewn in one line. Using the described method, you need to make three more horizontal rows from the scraps.

Step 3. The resulting four horizontal rows must be sewn together, carefully matching all the seams. To do this, place the top row with the front surface to the front side of the next one and stitch them. After this, you need to sew the third row to the second, and the fourth to the third.

Step 4. The resulting fabric must be ironed, straightening the seams in different directions.

Step 5. From the sections of padding polyester and the material for the base, it is necessary to cut blanks for the seal and the back side, corresponding to the parameters of the blanket. On a flat surface, lay out all three layers of the future bedspread as follows: the back side piece should be placed face down on the bottom, a piece of synthetic padding should be placed on it, and the top layer will be a piece sewn from shreds, laid out with the front part facing out.

Step 6. The prepared blanks must first be pinned together or swept with a light seam. After this, sew all three layers from the front side manually or on a sewing machine.

Step 7 Quilt the sewn product with a regular stitch along the seams or with another pattern at your discretion.

Step 8 The resulting blanket must be trimmed around the edges. To do this, you need to prepare a strip of fabric about 3 cm wide from the material for lining the edges. It should be attached to the edge so as to hide the stitching and sew it on.

After this, the strip must be unfolded and carefully hemmed to the back side of the product using a hand stitch.

The original do-it-yourself bedspread is ready.

To ensure that the squares do not move during the process, it is recommended to pin the nearest fragments with pins and sew the product in parts.

Blanket made from denim patches

Step 2. The prepared shreds must be applied with the wrong side to the wrong side of the lining and secured with pins. Adjacent fragments should be folded in four layers so that the pieces of denim are with the front surfaces facing out and sewn together. The seam, about 1.5 cm wide, should remain on the front of the blanket.

Step 3. From denim blanks you need to sew four strips of five squares each.

Step 4. The resulting strips should be connected to each other, matching the sides of the squares. The seam should remain on the front side of the product.

Step 5. Using wire cutters, you need to make notches along the seam, not reaching the line, and along the edges of the bedspread to create a lush fringe.

A DIY blanket made from denim scraps is ready.

For ease of cutting out square blanks, it is recommended to use a template.

Proper preparation of the denim material will help facilitate the process of making a bedspread from scraps.

Before sewing and cutting out squares, the fabric should be washed and steamed.

Do not use too hot water to wash jeans. And after steaming, the trousers must be ripped open, all seams, pockets and other dense elements removed.

DIY voluminous patchwork quilt

Step 2. Using pins, you need to combine all the corners of the large and small blanks.

The resulting folds should be secured with pins.

Step 3. A stitch should be placed along the perimeter of the workpieces, retreating 0.5 cm from the edge.

The actions described in paragraphs 2 and 3 must be done with the remaining fabric squares.

Step 4. From the received parts you need to sew 7 horizontal stripes consisting of 7 squares. To do this, the adjacent ones must be folded with their front surfaces inward and stitched.

Step 5. Horizontal stripes should be sewn together, folding them right sides inward and making sure the sides of the squares match.

Step 6. Each square must be cut from the inside, filled with filler, and then sewn up.

Step 7 For the wrong side of the blanket, you need to cut out a piece of velor that matches the size of the sewn front part.

Step 8 A decorative frill should be sewn along the edge of the velor blank. To do this, it needs to be applied to the front surface of the velor and stitched.

Step 10 The finished blanket must be turned inside out, and the hole left for turning inside must be sewn up.

A voluminous blanket made from shreds with your own hands is ready.

It can also be made from a certain number of small pillows. To do this, they must first be sewn from fabric squares and stuffed with filler, and then sewn in order onto the base according to a pre-designed pattern.

A do-it-yourself patchwork blanket can create a unique atmosphere of home warmth and comfort. It can decorate your home or become a wonderful gift for family and friends.

Previously, in almost every home you could find a blanket or bedspread made from multi-colored scraps of fabric. Now such products are again popular. Patchwork bedspreads decorate modern interiors decorated in country, Provence, and minimalist styles. Ready-made samples of such artistic textiles are quite expensive. You can make your own patchwork quilt. The result will be a fashionable, stylish, exclusive item made using the patchwork technique, which will cost several times less than something purchased in a store.

A beautiful blanket made of multi-colored stripes looks beautiful and original

The future product will consist of three layers:

  1. face;
  2. insulation;
  3. bottom lining.

First you need to select fabrics for the front side. These can be pieces of satin, chintz, silk, linen, drape, satin, calico, knitwear.

Square pieces of fabric for the front of the blanket

Denim fragments that combine well with chintz or cotton are also suitable. Patchwork can be made from unnecessary things or you can buy blanks for patchwork sewing in specialized stores. Sintepon, batting, and holofiber are used as synthetic insulation.

Synthetic padding filler in a roll is perfect for making blankets

The natural filling will be wool or cotton.

Cotton filling for summer blankets

If you want to make a DIY quilt rather than a quilt, then you won't need insulation. Any thick fabric will be suitable for the back lining.

Cotton fabric is suitable for lining a light blanket

The amount of material depends on the size of the product.

You will also need:

  • threads No. 45 or No. 50;
  • regular threads;
  • cardboard or plastic templates;
  • sewing machine;
  • iron;
  • needles, pins;
  • scissors, chalk, centimeter.

Tools you may need for patchwork

The color of the threads is chosen to be contrasting or to match the product. Regular threads will be used for basting. Templates are made based on the shape of each individual piece of fabric.

It can be a square, rhombus, triangle, circle, hexagon, rectangle. Each element must have a seam margin of 0.5 - 1 cm.

Schemes of patterns for patchwork from square elements

How to sew a patchwork quilt with your own hands. Step by step instructions

The first step is to think about the appearance of the product, color combinations of elements. It is advisable to choose colors so that the composition is in harmony with the overall interior design. The idea should be moved to the sketch. For this, a regular checkered notebook sheet is suitable, on which the future patchwork composition can be marked with colored pencils. The simplest diagram of the front side consists of squares of the same size connected to each other. You can come up with more complex patterns yourself, pick them up on the Internet, or purchase them in a specialized store, along with a craft kit.

Arrange the squares so that you like the combination of prints and patterns

Next, individual elements are manufactured, which will subsequently be connected to each other. Fabrics must be pre-washed and ironed well. Using templates, the required number of parts is cut out. Each flap should be ironed carefully.

Sew the squares into one line equal to the width of the bedspread

The simplest method of patchwork is to connect the pieces into strips, which are subsequently sewn together.

Sew horizontal rows together

The method of sewing with stripes is the simplest and is popular among beginners and professional craftsmen. The result is a solid front side.

Carefully align all seams for a perfect front side.

Ironing the resulting blanket

After this, the lining is cut out, which will be the same size as the top layer of the product.

Cut the seal to size, lay it out on a flat surface, and place the blanket on top, face up

Next, spread the lining fabric on a flat, solid base, wrong side up. It will not hurt to secure the material to the table or floor with tape. Insulation is laid on top and leveled. It is important that the size of the filler is 5 cm smaller at the edges than the rest of the product. The patchwork surface of the blanket is laid on top. After this, all three layers are connected with pins.

Cut the piece for the back of the quilt and place the fabric face down on top of the stack, stitching 3 layers around the perimeter

Turn it inside out through a small hole, iron it, sew it up by hand

Bonded layers should be quilted correctly. If you do this work using a sewing machine, you will need to install a special embroidery foot. Then you should start from the center of the canvas diagonally to the edges. Instead of a regular stitch, a curly outline is often used.

Add decorative stitching along the seams

If quilting is done by hand, you need to start by finishing the edges of the blanket. The edges are framed with a border of fabric or ribbon. For edging, material 8 cm - 10 cm wide is used, the length should be slightly longer than the edge of the product. The fabric or tape is folded lengthwise and ironed. Next, the border is sewn along the edges of the back and front sides of the quilt.

Ready-made patchwork blanket made by yourself

How to sew a patchwork blanket for a newborn with your own hands

Even a novice seamstress can make a patchwork quilt for a baby.

You can create an interesting, cute thing for your baby with your own hands. To do this, it is better to choose square patches with thematic or plot designs, alternating them with plain details. If it is not possible to select fabrics with such images, then you can create a blanket with cute appliqués or embroidery. For example, combining multi-colored squares into one canvas, and sewing children's appliques in the form of a house, pyramid, sun, heart or other options onto some of the flaps. The blanket can be additionally decorated with embroidery. For a baby blanket, it is better to use natural filling instead of synthetic.

A handmade patchwork blanket will be an excellent decoration for a child’s room or an original gift.

How to sew a blanket using the patchwork technique from triangles

We lay out the desired pattern from multi-colored triangles cut out according to the template

For beginners, it will be easiest to form the patches in the shape of regular equilateral triangles of the same size. From such details, the front side of the product can be easily decorated with interesting geometric compositions and ornaments. Triangles can be used to form stars, flowers, waves, and many different patterns. Triangular patches will be perfectly combined with square and diamond-shaped ones. When creating a template for future parts, it is important not to forget to provide indents along the edges for seams 0.5 cm - 1 cm wide. You can look at the pattern of the future patchwork composition in magazines, on the Internet, or come up with it yourself.

DIY patchwork quilt using the ladder technique

Interesting geometric pattern of two contrasting colors “Jacob’s Ladder”

In conclusion, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with an interesting patchwork technique for beginners, “Jacob’s Ladder.” It’s not difficult to master, and the finished product will look beautiful, stylish and interesting. The essence of the technique is to form identical square blocks, called “Jacob's Ladder,” consisting of a certain set of parts. Next, all the finished blocks should be connected in a certain order.

For one block you will need 5 2:2 parts. They look like four identical squares of two colors connected in a checkerboard pattern. You also need to make 4 squares consisting of two triangles. To make parts, you need to take two plain fabrics, for example, red and white.

We make it from stripes and squares of two colors

Next, let's start making 2:2 parts. To do this, you will need two strips of fabric, white and red, 7 cm wide. They should be folded face to face, well aligned along the edges. On one side, the edges of the segments are sewn together, the seam is made at a distance of 6 mm from the edge. After this, you need to unfold the stitched sections and smooth out the seam. You will get a two-color wide ribbon from two stripes, you need 2 of these ribbons. They need to be folded face to face so that the red stripe lies on the white one, aligning the edges. Next, the folded ribbons are cut crosswise into strips 7 cm wide. The result is a pair of strips, which, without unfolding, need to be sewn together along the longitudinal edge. For the seam we retreat 6 mm. After this, we unfold the stitched elements and smooth out the seams. As a result, we get finished parts that look like four squares arranged in a checkerboard pattern.

To make squares from two triangles, you will need a white and red square of fabric with sides measuring 13.5 cm. On the white square on the wrong side, draw a diagonal from one corner to the other. Then place the white square on the red one face to face and secure with pins. You need to make seams along the drawn diagonal on both sides, departing 6 mm from the drawn line. Having stitched the square, you need to cut it along the drawn line. We unfold the resulting part and iron it along the seams.

Now you can assemble the square Jacob's Ladder block using a simple template. Five 2:2 pieces are laid out as follows: one in the very center, two at the upper and lower corners of the square block. Between them we place the remaining 4 parts, consisting of two triangles. All elements are connected to each other in rows, you get three strips that just need to be sewn together. Finally, we iron the seams and the first block is ready. The number of such blocks is determined based on the size of the future blanket using the “Ladder” technique. By combining individual elements into one design, you will get a stunningly beautiful designer item.

It often happens that we feel sorry for throwing away old clothes that we don’t wear, although they haven’t worn out yet, and we don’t want to store them, because they take up a lot of space. Far-sighted housewives solve this problem very simply: they use this fabric for patchwork and make a patchwork quilt from it.

Peculiarities

Patchwork is a trend in needlework in which various things are created from scraps and multi-colored scraps of fabric, ranging from small crafts and decorative pillows to blankets and ottomans. The name of this type of needlework speaks for itself: it comes from the English word “patchwork”, where “patch” is a patch, “work” is work.

The patchwork quilt is the most popular patchwork product, especially for beginners and craft enthusiasts. A blanket in this style can have various patterns and ornaments or depict specific objects, it all depends on the technique and imagination of the master.

Now patchwork has turned into a whole stylistic trend, within which professional apartment designers also work. And yet, the best works in patchwork belong to amateur craftsmen who made this activity their hobby and breathed life and love into it.

The patchwork culture is so original that it is suitable for decorating rooms with interiors that are completely different in style, and not just for rooms in a rustic or country style, as ordinary people usually think. Patchwork quilts and pillows will harmoniously complement designs in the High-Tech and Loft styles.

The undoubted advantage of patchwork blankets is their availability. You can often find them in stores, and if necessary, you can sew them yourself. The materials are very simple and affordable, they can be found in any home - just look in the closet and sort through old things. For the rest, the housewife will need a couple of simple patchwork techniques, a sewing machine and a bit of imagination.

Technicians

The creation of any patchwork product involves the step-by-step execution of an algorithm, which depends on a particular technique. The technique determines which templates and patterns the master will need to use to sew the product:

  • Traditional patchwork – This is the most common technique for creating large pieces. First you need to sew a single solid fabric from many scraps, and then use stuffing to form a blanket from it. The patch pattern is usually located only on the top of the future blanket, but there are also double-sided models where the pattern is located on both sides of the product. The traditional technique uses only rectangular or square flaps.

A variation of traditional patchwork is the “American square” technique. Rectangular and square fabric shapes are also used here, but they are arranged according to a specific pattern.

  • Sometimes the color of the squares is arranged in rows from dark to light, forming gradient. This technique is called “watercolor”. This technique uses pastel colors as a basis.
  • The next technique is called "crazy patchwork" or crazy shreds. The sewing principle is the same as in traditional patchwork. The only difference is that this technique uses shreds of completely different shapes and sizes. They can be crooked, small, large, have many angles or none at all. Blankets using this technique can be decorated with additional embroidery, ribbons, sequins, buttons, beads, beads or braid, which is usually placed over the seams to hide them.
  • Products created using technology knitted patchwork, or crocheted patchwork, are very similar in appearance to the traditional technique, if not for one difference. In this type of patchwork, scraps and flaps are not sewn to each other by machine, but are tied manually with threads. This is more painstaking work. Some housewives create blankets entirely from stitched knitted scraps.

  • Blankets in Japanese patchwork technique usually quilted, and the patches are cut from silk fabric. The pattern into which the flaps are folded is based on geometry: rhombuses, squares, rectangles and corners. Sometimes the patches are cut in the shape of a honeycomb.
  • “Well” technique also called the “log hut,” involves combining spiraling rectangular pieces around a square that occupies the center of the blanket.

  • At the core chess technique there are small squares arranged in a checkerboard pattern. Typically, when creating such a blanket, contrasting colors are used.
  • A technique called “Russian square” to some extent repeats the national pattern. In the center of the quilt there are several small squares sewn together, flanked by triangles of different colors. Closer to the periphery of the product, squares begin to be used again.

More experienced needlewomen are not limited to the listed techniques and come up with their own. The scraps can be combined in absolutely any order, so there are no clear laws or prohibitions for this type of needlework. You can create as you please!

For different styles

It is believed that patchwork items are used in simple styles like Provence. However, an interior with accents on textiles made from scraps can be made not only in rustic, but also in a number of modern styles such as Loft, Country, Art Deco, Marine or ethno. Patchwork items will not simplify them, but, on the contrary, will soften them and become a bright accent that gives comfort.

For ordinary people, a patchwork quilt is associated with something Russian and simple, but this is a deep misconception. The patchwork pattern can be built in the form of a mosaic or appliqué. In addition, patchwork quilts can repeat not only the Russian national ornament, but also the ethno-patterns of different peoples of the world.

Suitable materials

In patchwork there are no specific guidelines regarding the choice of fabric. Initially, this type of needlework was conceived as a way to practically use old things. Therefore, in one product you can combine fabrics of different textures and shapes - this will only add originality to it. So when creating a quilt from scraps, you can use scraps of any fabric that you like.

Another thing is that not every fabric is pliable to use. Patchwork masters are sure: the best material for a patchwork quilt is chintz. This is because cotton fabric is easier to cut, there will be no threads sticking out on the sides of the chintz pieces, it is difficult to put a tie on such fabric, and it is easy to iron. The machine stitching on such fabric will not creep and will come out smooth.

You can choose scraps from any old things:

  • From jeans the most original models are obtained. Especially if you take denim in different shades - from light blue to deep blue. You can arrange the pieces in any order, or you can make a gradient out of them.
  • A combination of scraps will help you achieve an original pattern. from knitwear or children's clothes. As a rule, things for children are made from colorful, bright fabrics. They often have a fun and unique pattern, and such prints are perfect for a bright patchwork quilt. This is exactly what is obtained from knitted fabrics.

  • A rather bold option is to use materials such as silk, organza and staple. These capricious fabrics require some skill, so it is not recommended for beginners to work with them. However, an experienced master can create a miracle out of them. For example, any patchwork quilt will sparkle in a new way if you layer organza as an additional fabric on top of a bright material.

A quilt should not only be beautiful, but also warm. Especially if it is used not as a bedspread, but as a full-fledged blanket. In this case, the material should be warm and pleasant to the touch. Wool and drape have these characteristics:

  • Maybe, wool It is not so rich in the choice of colors and looks massive, but it is warm and soft. A wool patchwork blanket is usually created for practical purposes - to keep warm in cold weather, so it will come in handy in cold weather. In addition, six is easy to operate. It does not wrinkle and hardly gets dirty, and therefore will always look well-groomed. The wool blanket holds its shape well, and the material itself is very durable and will therefore last for many years.
  • Drape It may well replace wool, since it has almost the same features. This material also holds its shape well, so you can cover any bed with it, and the blanket will look very neat. The drape wears out for a long time and does not wrinkle. It holds color for a very long time and does not fade. Finally, drape is as warm as wool, so it will be indispensable in cold weather.

Fillers, insulation

A patchwork quilt can be either thin, more like a blanket, or insulated. It’s easy to create a warm blanket - the main thing is to find and sew a warming material between the outer and lower patchwork parts of the future product. By the way, there may be several such materials:

  • For example, many needlewomen use thinly sliced loose foam. It holds its shape well, does not roll up in clumps inside the blanket, is elastic and durable. Foam rubber has low wear and tear, so a blanket with such padding will last longer.

  • Sintepon is also a good option for stuffing blankets. This is a hypoallergenic elastic material with a good heat-saving effect. It retains heat better than foam rubber, which is why it is often used when sewing winter clothes. In addition, things made from padding polyester are usually very soft and light. This material will add volume to the blanket, giving it a cozy look. However, it is better to stuff quilts with padding polyester, otherwise the material may roll up over time and be distributed unevenly inside the product.
  • Sometimes used as blanket stuffing batting. This is a non-woven material made from shredded and pressed fabric scraps. Batting is considered quite warm and pleasant to the touch, but unlike padding polyester and foam rubber, it wears out quite quickly.

  • Another non-woven material suitable for stuffing blankets is holofiber. It appeared not so long ago, but has already firmly taken its place in the stuffing of various products. In its appearance and properties, holofiber is very similar to synthetic padding polyester, although their production technologies are significantly different. Holofiber is considered an environmentally friendly product for health. It is resistant to washing and various types of deformation, and does not accumulate dust. This material allows air to pass through well, but at the same time retains heat. Under a holofiber blanket it will not be cold in winter, and not hot in summer.

In some cases, the choice of padding depends on the type of outer material of the blankets. For example, for thinner and more stubborn materials such as silk, thin foam rubber or batting is more suitable, because they are made in layers, which means they will add thickness and shape to a shapeless product.

Dimensions

The dimensions of any (including patchwork) quilt are determined based on the size of the sleeping place, the parameters of its owner, his activity during sleep and personal preferences.

So, the calculation of the size grid of a blanket for a single bed will vary from 180-190 cm in length and up to 130 cm in width. For children's beds, the length of the blanket will reach no more than 160 cm.

For single beds, both large and medium sizes of blankets are suitable. It all depends on the needs of the person. The length of a blanket for a semi-truck also remains within the range of 190-200 cm, while the width ranges from 140 to 180 cm. There will be so much space under such a blanket that you can wrap yourself entirely in it.

The specificity of double beds and king size beds is their huge dimensions. A good solution for such beds would be a voluminous patchwork blanket, significantly larger than the standard dimensions. The length of such blankets can reach 200 cm or more, and the width can be from 2 to 4 meters.

There are non-standard bed sizes, the blanket for which can reach 5 meters. However, there are relatively few such models, so bed linen and blankets for them are usually made to order.

Colors and designs

The traditional, and at the same time the most common pattern for patchwork products in the patchwork style is geometry. Typically, classic patchwork patterns are divided into two categories:

  • Products made from squares. The square is the primary element, which is often the center of the composition. Even the simplest bedspread, made only from square scraps, will decorate any bed.
  • From triangles. A triangular pattern on a quilt appears smaller and more mottled than a square one. More often, multi-colored triangles are arranged in such an order that they form a square. A pattern based on alternating shapes will look great on any quilt.

Various patterns of regular squares, rectangles, diamonds, triangles and polygonal shapes are very popular, but there are other options for quilt patterns.

Patchwork does not limit craftsmen in choosing a pattern. In addition to the usual geometry, you can create entire applications from fabric. For example, you can place images of characters from your favorite books and films on a blanket. For children's blankets, you can use images of any cartoon characters. The child will certainly like such a creative canvas.

A good gift would be a patchwork blanket created in the form of a mosaic or collage with photographs. Such a blanket will definitely lift the mood of its owner, because pictures dear to the heart will always be before your eyes.

You can get creative with your quilt and make it themed. For example, in the applique you can use New Year or Christmas motifs, depicting an elegant tree with a star on the top. You can also time the theme of the canvas to coincide with your birthday or Valentine's Day. You can fantasize about Halloween or Easter. If desired, any idea can be translated into patchwork.

There are no rules about the color palette: you can use any shades of any color. These can be colorful synthetic shreds with different prints and colors, or they can be plain scraps in pastel colors.

Plain and variegated fabrics can be alternated with each other, so the overall appearance of the blanket will become even more original.

Children's

Quilts for children are made according to the same principle as for adults. Only the sizes will differ: for children's bedrooms, blankets up to 140 cm in length and up to 100 cm in width are chosen. For teenagers, sizes will be larger.

Patchwork can be used to make blankets for newborns and small children up to 2 years old. Envelopes made from scraps for discharge will look beautiful. Such products always look very cute.
