Trigrams and their meaning. What is bagua Trigrams correspond to human energy centers

The concepts of Yin and Yang are a very powerful tool for studying and identifying the basic properties of almost any object or phenomenon. Of course, most of the objects that interest us are of a rather complex nature, and it is far from obvious how to classify them as Yin or Yang. Therefore, for a more subtle analysis, a technique is used when individual characteristics of an object are attributed to Yin or Yang, and then the resulting combination of Yin and Yang traits is analyzed. If you carefully read the article, you might have noticed that when studying the nature of the Elements, only two extreme states were used, expressed by the concepts of Yin and Yang.

Now let's try to detail the idea of various events by introducing into consideration a third, intermediate state. We will graphically depict this representation in the form of three vertical lines. The table below gives the main options for interpreting the ternary description of various phenomena. Of course, this list can be significantly expanded, including, for example, such theological constructs as the Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The fundamental approach remains the same - each trait in the triad will have one of two meanings (states): Yin or Yang. As a result, we get eight combinations for which the European name has been established - trigrams, and in Chinese they are called Ba Gua (Ba- eight, Gua- symbol, sign):

I would like to immediately draw your attention to one point. Although trigrams are a more detailed way of describing than Yin-Yang or even the Elements, they nevertheless contain a huge number of possible interpretations depending on the specific situation. In popular books on Feng Shui, a very limited list of ideas is given for trigrams, which is often more misleading than clarifying. For example, the trigram Zhen, the symbolic image of which Thunder, and the content is invasion, excitation, often interpreted simply as "health" and sometimes added "family". What is so obvious and common between these concepts - thunder, health and family - to describe them with one single trigram? The essence of the Zhen trigram lies much deeper, but private cases of its manifestation can indeed be HEALTH and FAMILY, however, with some reservations.

The description of the trigrams presented below is an attempt to consider the essence of the trigrams, based only on the interaction of their Yin and Yang features and using the closest, in my opinion, associations and images for explanation in the form of specific phenomena. I offer this material on the basis of my own understanding of the nature of trigrams, trying to find out why certain very specific concepts are associated with each trigram, between which, very often, I did not see any obvious connection.
Next to the graphic designation of each trigram, I present its traditional definitions:

Zhen TreeThunder Invasion
In the beginning there was the Word - think about the meaning of this phrase and imagine an explosion, lightning, tearing up darkness and silence. The Yang trait, strength and desire, comes from the bottom up, overcoming Yin inertia and peace. The grain in which the power of Life awakens. The moment of truth when you suddenly realize the cause or find a solution and begin to take active action. A cry for help - and without hesitation you throw yourself into fire or icy water...

Since the Yang trait is at the core of the process, and the current state and expected future are described by Yin traits, the Zhen trigram describes any event that invades our calm, measured life and brings active excitement into it: the birth of the first child in the family; a phone call that disturbs the silence of your office; the squeal of car brakes as you calmly cross the street.

When describing natural phenomena, Zhen corresponds to early spring, when vital juices begin to awaken. Dawn, when the first ray of the Sun disperses the darkness of the night. To the East, where the Sun begins its movement across the sky and a new day begins. Thunder, as a harbinger of a thunderstorm, which forces us to seek shelter.

The correlation of the trigram with a person is based on the same effect of a push, an external influence that leads to a change in the state of “rest”. Health is psychological and physical, when by external factors we understand the impact of unfavorable circumstances - stressful situations or an accident. Parents who gave impetus to our existence. Neighbors in the house who make noise and interfere with our rest, forcing us to get nervous or call the police. A random event that gives impetus to the understanding of some problem (remember Archimedes’ cry “Eureka!”?). An outburst of emotions - a quarrel, a scandal, a joyful unexpected meeting or creative insight - are also a possible manifestation of the Zhen trigram.

Naturally, the trigram Zhen correlates with the Element of Wood, in which the vital force begins to bubble, causing a bud to burst and a thin stalk to break through the thickness of the earth towards the light. This is the energy of rebirth, giving rise to a new life.

Since we are talking about activity, Zhen is the trigram of the Yang Tree. This is a trunk that sets a certain direction for the further process, an active linear movement. In a broader sense, the Zhen trigram is associated with a change in position in space and/or time.

Xun TreeWind Penetration
The push is given (trigram Zhen). Activity declines (upper Yang line) and the process enters a phase of measured forward movement - Yang line in the center. The turn of calm and tranquility comes - the lower Yin trait.

The buds have opened, and the tree begins to dress in an outfit of flowers and leaves, slowly releasing new young branches. Tender shoots and foliage are a manifestation of the Xun trigram, which correlates with the Element of the Yin Tree. If Zhen is active straightforwardness, then Xun is a soft, unobtrusive penetration: the lower Yin trait displaces the Yang traits, like a vine leisurely entangling a tree trunk.

Events that occur almost imperceptibly and do not disrupt the natural course of affairs (middle line), but introduce some variety (lower Yin line), can be described by the Xun trigram - receiving a letter from a distant relative; an interesting business proposal that the secretary put on your desk among other documents; a flock of sparrows that caught your attention while walking through the park; a customer who came into your store and bought a bottle of expensive Georgian wine.

The idea of “penetration” is expressed in the image of the Wind, which brings welcome coolness to the summer heat, which sways the branches and leaves of trees, giving them various shapes, which drives clouds across the sky, creating bizarre images from them.

Changing shape is an important characteristic of the Xun trigram, which can be used to describe various processes associated with mechanical processing - making a part from a metal blank on a lathe, carpentry, cutting and sewing clothes, preparing a salad from fresh vegetables.

Since as a result of processing we receive something more valuable than the original object, the Xun trigram is often associated with the concept of Wealth. But this is not money that randomly “falls from the sky.” This is the final beneficial effect obtained as a result of the effort expended and the work process itself, leading to a useful result. For example, you built a building (Zhen trigram) and rented out its premises - receiving rent is described by the Xun trigram. Receiving interest on a loan and other types of income from successfully invested capital.

The activity of a gardener who cares for a garden, it seems to me, well reflects the essence of the Xun trigram, which is not accidentally located after the Zhen trigram. If Zhen is birth, birth, then Xun is care and care for the newborn. It does not matter whether we are talking about a person, an idea or a phenomenon. Caring for something or someone can be manifested in raising a child (caring for his character, morality, etc.), medicine (health care), maintaining and systematically developing a dealer network, on the creation of which significant investments were initially spent resources.

Lee FireFire Clarity
After a long period of work, there always comes a time when we stop, examine the path we have traveled and outline plans for the future.

The Li trigram reflects this state of short-term pause (middle Yin trait) after prolonged activity (lower Yang trait) and on the eve of new activities (upper Yang trait). This stop gives us the opportunity to see what we did not notice in the bustle and current worries. It becomes clear to us and, perhaps, to those around us what we have achieved and where we should move next.

This state of clarity, visibility and understanding naturally correlates with the Element of Fire - like a torch or lamp illuminates the surrounding space (broadening one's horizons).

To see better, you need to rise higher - this is the state of a climber who has climbed to the top of a mountain and, while relaxing, surveys the view with delight. But the peak can be not only at the mountain! The pinnacle of fame, success, popularity, a state of elation, joy and happiness, the desire to express oneself, show oneself, embrace the whole world...

In nature, the Li trigram corresponds to midday in the hot summer, when the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky and burns so mercilessly that all living things freeze from the unbearable heat.

Expansion of sphere of influence and fame. But the wider the influence spreads, the more difficult it is to keep the process under control and the shape of the trigram suggests a solution - a qualitative (internal) change is necessary (the middle Yin trait is a change within). Only a qualitative change can keep a famous artist at the pinnacle of fame; he must look for more and more new ways of self-expression, otherwise the public will simply turn away and forget about him. To maintain interest in a product, constant improvement and the introduction of new quality are necessary.

This internal qualitative transformation represents, in my opinion, the essence of the Li trigram and can be used to describe the processes of transition from one qualitative state to another: the ripening of the fruit, when it is filled with juice, absorbing the rays of the Sun; changes in the way of thinking and view of the world as a result of the study of science or the discovery of spiritual truth; states of orgasm, religious ecstasy or satori...

Chemical transformations and production, cooking using fire, processing of raw materials and other activities when qualitatively different ones are obtained from one starting substance can also be described by the Li trigram.

Since the fire quickly goes out if no wood is added to it, the state associated with the Li trigram cannot last long if it is not supported by a sufficient amount of resources. Under natural conditions it is a flash, an instant. But if you want to prolong this moment, prepare firewood, since Fire is a very voracious Element.

Bagua, or eight trigrams, is one of the most fundamental principles of Feng Shui and all Chinese metaphysics.

What does Bagua mean?

Ba-gua translated from Chinese means eight trigrams. Ba translates as eight, and Gua - trigram.

What is a trigram?

A trigram is three lines located one above the other. Each line is called Yao and can be continuous or broken, that is, Yin or Yang.

  • Yang energy is an active principle. Shown as a solid line.
  • Yin energy is a passive principle. It is represented by a line divided into two segments.

Thus, each trigram is a combination of solid and broken lines. In total, there are 8 possible combinations, which means the possible number of trigrams is eight.

How trigrams are arranged

Based on the combinations of lines in each trigram, one can judge what kind of energy it carries - Yin or Yang. Trigrams with three lines of the same polarity (only solid or broken lines) are called extreme yin or extreme yang.

And the remaining trigrams consist of one “Yin” or “Yang” line and two other lines with the opposite direction. In this case, the character of the trigram is determined by the single trait that is in the minority. She is considered the main one.

So, if a trigram has one solid (Yang) line and the other two broken (Yin) lines, then it will be Yang. If one line is intermittent and two are solid, then the trigram, on the contrary, is Yin.

Qualities of trigrams

Bagua, or eight trigrams - essentially 8 images. With their help, you can describe all material and immaterial things in the Universe. For example - natural phenomena, cardinal directions, family members, body organs.

How the Bagua principle is used in Feng Shui

All eight trigrams are arranged in a circle, and each Gua relates to a specific side of the world.

There are two options for the location of Ba Gua

Early Sky Bagua

This diagram reflects the ideal structure of the world, where everything is constant and harmonious. Here the extreme Yang is at the top (south) and the extreme Yin is at the bottom (north). This is the image that is applied to the famous Feng Shui symbol - the Bagua mirror.

Bagua of the Early Heaven is a theoretical description of the “perfect model” of the Universe, which has achieved complete harmony.

In reality, the world is far from ideal. It has shortcomings, it is constantly changing, it is in continuous development. Therefore, a different arrangement of Bagua is used in practice.

Late Sky Bagua

With the help of the Late Sky Bagua chart, you can evaluate your home. To do this, go outside, stand in front of the front door and take measurements with a compass.

Once you've determined your cardinal location, then take your house plan, divide it into nine squares, and combine it with your Late Sky Bagua diagram. Having done this, you will understand which part of your home is responsible for which trigram.

When a sector is unfavorable from the point of view of Feng Shui (for example, it contains an external Sha, or there is no sector, or worse, both at the same time), then the corresponding trigram is “under attack.”

And then everything connected with her “suffers” in the house.

Thus, knowing the principle of Bagua placement, you can easily make an initial analysis for the Feng Shui of your home and note visible flaws that immediately catch your eye.

Trigram Xun (巽 - sun, shun - wind) -☴ - located in the southeast, element Wood. The essence of the trigram is penetration.

In this sector, Qi energy has the property of Yin and Yang. The Sun trigram represents the eldest daughter. In ancient times, it was believed that if there was no Sun sector in the house, the eldest daughter would face a difficult fate.

The element Wood in this sector manifests itself as a small tree, the Yin tree. It corresponds to green (as well as turquoise and sea wave) color. The element that nourishes Wood is Water.

Xun is a soft, unobtrusive penetration: the lower Yin trait displaces the Yang traits (this can be compared to a plant shoot breaking through the asphalt). These are events that occur almost unnoticed and do not disrupt the natural course of affairs (the middle line), but bring some variety. This is long, painstaking work, as a result of which we receive something more valuable than the original object, which is why the Xun trigram is often associated with the concept of Wealth. But this is not money that randomly “falls from the sky.” This is the final beneficial effect obtained as a result of the effort expended and the work process itself, leading to a useful result. The activity of a gardener who cares for a garden well reflects the essence of the Xun trigram, which is not accidentally located after the Zhen trigram. If Zhen is birth, birth, then Xun is care and care for the newborn.

Activation of the southeastern sector.

To activate this sector, use Chinese coins, wooden wind chimes, a money tree in a ceramic pot, a fountain, etc.

The sector, as in other sectors, is negatively affected by clutter, heaps of unnecessary, broken things, and a clutter of things and objects.

If it so happens that the southeastern sector of the home is in the bathroom or toilet, it is better not to activate it in this place. Select the southeast sector in a separate room, for example in the living room, and place the activator there.

If there are portraits of your relatives in this sector, it is better if they are successful and happy people.

Feng Shui uses not four, but eight cardinal directions. This is the basic requirement for any analysis of a situation where it is necessary to establish which one. The façade of the building is facing light. Now let's look at the most fundamental symbol used in Chinese civilization: the 8 trigrams.

8 trigrams of the I Ching.

I Ching- Chinese classical system of predictions, based on a binary system derived from two basic units - yin and yang: respectively, the female, broken line (- -) and the male, solid line (-). A trigram is a combination of three lines, yin and yang. Accordingly, there are 2 to the third power, or 8 trigrams. In Chinese, trigrams are called "san yao kua" (or gua), which means "kua of 3 lines", or "kua" for short. Each kua is read starting from the bottom line upward. The Qian trigram with three solid lines is completely masculine and means Father. The Kun trigram with three broken lines is completely feminine and means Mother, as shown in column 7 of the table.

Interestingly, in the same column, the three sons are symbolized by trigrams with only one yang line, and the three daughters by trigrams with only one yin line.

Thus, a hierarchical structure can be created, starting with the Father trigram (a trigram with three solid Yang lines), up to the Mother trigram (with three broken Yin lines). On the other hand, in each trigram the bottom line represents the Earth, the middle line represents Man and the top line represents Heaven. In the table, the first column shows the trigram and its name, and the sixth column gives the general characteristics and effect of the trigram. The second column shows its Element. Note that Wood, Earth and Metal have two trigrams each, while Fire and Water have only one. The third column gives the traditional correspondence of the trigram with an animal. The fourth column shows associations with nature, and the fifth shows the connection of the trigram with a picture, since it reflects their connection with the season of the year.

To establish a connection between Feng Shui and trigrams, we must relate the trigrams to compass directions. The eight trigrams refer to the eight cardinal directions, but are arranged quite differently in two different systems, namely the Pre-Heaven Trigram Circle (supposedly invented by Fu Xi around 2800 BC) and the Post-Heaven Trigram Circle (associated with Wen, the first ruler Chou dynasty, approximately 1027 BC). Although we will not go into detail about the history of these two systems, it is important to remember that both are equally important. These two Circles are reflected in Figures 1.6 and 1.7. Trigrams are read from the base to the top, that is, if they are located in a circle, then from the center of the circle outward. The trigram lines closest to the center of the circle are the bottom ones and are considered the first lines.

We will be mainly interested in the After-Heavenly Circle of Trigrams, since it relates to the world existing in its present state, and it is this circle that you will need to study. Remember that trigrams are read from base to top, in a circle from the center outwards. The top line of the trigram is the most distant.

Please note that the Father trigram has all lines solid (yang), and the Mother trigram has all broken lines (yin), the trigrams of sons have only one yang line and daughters have only one yin line.

The 8 trigrams are combined with each other, making 8 x 8 = 64 hexagrams used in the I Ching.

In China, hexagrams are called "ta kua", or large kua, to distinguish them from "san yao kua", that is, kua consisting of 3 lines, or trigrams. You can breathe a sigh of relief: in Flying Star Feng Shui, hexagrams are not important, and we will need to focus on the 8 trigrams. But it is still useful to know that the I-Ching hexagrams are directly related to Feng Shui (and are the basis of another school of Feng Shui - see Appendix 7).

Magic square of lo shu in Feng Shui.

Lo Shu is one of the oldest Feng Shui tools. In its basic form it contains 9 digits:

This is the main magic square of the Earth, but it is not the only form of square. In each of the 9 Periods, the numbers in the grid may be positioned differently. All Periods are shown in full in Appendix 7. The Lo Shu Square is called magical because the sum of all numbers horizontally, diagonally or vertically is always 15. In Europe, this magic square is associated with the Earth and the planet Saturn. Nine numbers in 9 squares form the basic pattern. We must fit some of the other symbols we already know into this square.

Lo Shu exactly coincides with the After-Heaven circle of trigrams. Since there are 9 cells in Lo Shu, it is natural that 8 trigrams should be equated to external cells. The number nine is considered the most yang as the odd and largest integer. The south is the hottest or most yang of the directions. Therefore, in the main square of Lo Shu, the cell with the number 9 is oriented to the south. The 5 Elements are arranged accordingly.

Each of these key feng shui elements is emphasized to a greater or lesser extent in the different schools of feng shui that have developed over the past few millennia. Essentially, they all use the Elements we have already discussed in this chapter, but they place different emphasis on them. One of the main differences between the 8 Mansions school of feng shui and the Flying Star school is the treatment of Luo Shu. The 8 Mansion School only uses the above-mentioned basic Luo Shu square shape. The Flying Star School discovered that the energies represented by these numbers do not remain frozen in time, but change. Take a look at Appendix 4 and you will see all 9 permutations of the Lo Shu square. If we want to identify one specific permutation, we name it by the number at the center of the square. Thus, the fifth permutation has the number "5" in the center, the sixth - the number "6" and so on.

We have already noted that in a "standard" Lo Shu square the sum of the digits in each column, row and diagonal is 15. This is also true for the permutations "5", "2" and "8".

These numbers are very important, and although we will not go into them in detail, it is enough for you to note that the total sums for each Lo Shu permutation say a lot about the qualities of a given square. For example, all squares whose digits in each direction add up to 15 are considered Earth squares.

Ancient Chinese sages, studying the world, described it using eight trigrams called gua. Based on the relationships between yin and yang, they created images of trigrams that make up a holistic description of the world and the laws that govern the world. It is unknown when exactly the trigrams were formed. Their origins are lost in the mists of time.

The eight trigrams are called ba-gua. Translated from Chinese, the word “ba” means “eight”, and the word “gua” means “trigram”.

The trigram (gua) is a graphic symbol of the main processes occurring in living and inanimate nature. Studying the symbolism of trigrams is necessary for a correct understanding of Feng Shui.

Qian – Creativity, Sky

The Qian trigram consists of three solid (yang) lines, so it is the quintessence of yang. Qian is a symbol of new beginnings. Qian is the greatest success, which is favored by endurance. This trigram denotes strength, authority, activity and power. Qian represents the father of the family, who is authoritarian and demands due respect. At the same time, Qian warns against rising above others, against arrogance. The ancient treatise “Sho Gua Zhuan” says: “Qian is round (the sky). This is the sovereign, jade, a symbol of unspeakable purity and strength. This is metal, cold, ice. This trigram is dark red and scarlet. It denotes an excellent horse (symbols of strength, endurance); the fruits of the trees or the fruits of labor.”

Creativity is understood as a creative action of both heaven, which controls fate (min), and outstanding personalities: heads of state, leaders, leaders, heads of families (men).

Places under the influence of this trigram will be ruled by the eldest man in the family, the head of the company, the commander. Qian enhances masculine qualities in women. Qian is power. Qian is the word that gave rise to all things. Qian is the head of a family, a company, or a state. Qian expresses initiative, authority, strength, great wealth and success achieved through work, perseverance, endurance and determination.

Kun – Receptivity, Earth

  • Main features: acceptance and giving, pliability, pliability
  • Body parts: stomach
  • People: mother, wife
  • Direction: southwest
  • Element: big Earth

The Kun trigram consists of three broken (Yin) lines, so it is the quintessence of Yin.

Receptivity (acceptance) must be combined with creativity. This trigram has a great connection with the Qian (Creativity) trigram, being its ideal complement. Kun is associated with the element of Earth, because Kun represents all the qualities of this element: receptivity, pliability, the ability to plow, sow, plant, give birth.

Receptivity is the earth, the mother. The ancient treatise “Sho Gua Zhuan” says: “Kun is a canvas (fabric) cauldron, frugality, economy and balance. This is a calf next to a cow; it's a big cart; is a large amount of something; it's a crowd; it is a stump from which branches grow.” Among the different types of soil, Kun is black soil. This trigram also symbolizes the Earth as the opposite of Heaven, the feminine side of the race as the opposite of the masculine. It creates relationships not only between a woman and a man, but also between a subordinate and a boss. Kun is a symbol of subordinates.

Places under the influence of this trigram will be ruled by a woman, even if it is not a single woman. It’s just that in this case the man will play a less noticeable role. In the workplace, a subordinate will be in charge rather than a boss. Kun enhances feminine qualities in men as well. It symbolizes protection, realization, fulfillment.

Ren – Excitement, Thunder

  • Main features: movement, advancement, mobility
  • Body parts: feet
  • People: eldest son, eldest man
  • Direction: East
  • Element: a big tree

The Ren trigram denotes an action similar to the action of a thunderstorm. It symbolizes the motivating energy of the Universe. However, this is not the energy of Qian-Heaven, Creativity. Ren rather supports Creativity, giving it energy for growth.

Excitement is thunder. This is a dragon rising from the earth to fly into the heavens. This is a clap of thunder heard from a great distance. This is a signal warning of caution in actions, scrupulousness, calling for inner peace. This is a dark yellow color. This is sprawl, the high road, the eldest son.

Zhen expresses determination and impetuosity. In the treatise “Sho Gua Zhuan” it is written: “Ren is a tree and fast-growing plants (young green bamboo, reeds, reeds). Among the edible plants are those that produce pods. These are densely growing plants. Among the horses, this is the one that neighs loudly, loves to gallop, with a white left hind leg and a star on its forehead.” Excitement gives movement and growth. This trigram is also associated with self-discipline and self-control.

Xun – Softness, Wind

  • Headsny features: penetration, spread, dispersion
  • Body parts: thighs, buttocks, lower back
  • People: eldest daughter, eldest woman
  • Directedlenition: southeast
  • Element: small tree

The treatise “Sho Gua Zhuan” says: “Xun is a tree, wind, work, the eldest sister. This is a measuring cord. This is everything that is long and tall. This is something that moves back and forth while rocking; that which fluctuates. Vibration is associated with movement, which carries odors, so Xun is a smell. Wind is associated with dispersion and propagation. Xun is a tree that grows high and penetrates deep.

Among people, Xun denotes gray-haired, restless individuals who strive to achieve their advantage at any cost, make a profit and know how to bargain.

This is a sign of anxiety, which in this case is not a drawback, but only shows the transformation of this trigram into its opposite - the Ren trigram.

Xun dissipates, transfers, spreads. She is changeable and mobile, like the wind; her action is sometimes gentle, sometimes sudden, sometimes persistent.

Kan - Abyss and danger, Water

  • Headsny features: danger, depth, Moon
  • Body parts: human heart, soul and mind, ears, blood, kidneys
  • People: middle son, man
  • Directedlenition: north
  • Element: Water

The trigram Kan symbolizes danger. It encourages action while in the thick of things. Striving towards a goal, a person changes his course of action - just as water changes its shape. In this case, the person acts according to the proverb: “Water wears away stones.”

The treatise “Sho Gua Zhuan” says: “Kan is dangerous water, a ditch, a trap, bending and straightening, a bow and a wheel. This is effort, blood, blood red color. This is penetration. This is the Moon. Among people, Kan denotes thieves, as well as melancholic people and those who have heart or ear pain. These are horses with a beautiful ridge (back), with an impetuous disposition, with thin (weak) hooves and those horses that stumble. Among trees, these are hardwoods with large roots.”

Kan is a sign of cunning, secrecy and concealment.

Li – Connectivity and Cohesion, Fire

  • Headsny features: radiance, shine, brightness, light, Sun
  • Body parts: eyes
  • People: middle daughter, woman
  • Directedlenition: south
  • Element: fire

The treatise “Sho Gua Zhuan” says: “Li is fire, the Sun, lightning, land, the connecting daughter, armor and helmet, battle and weapons. Lee stands for turtle, crab, conch, pearl oyster and mollusk. Among people, these are those who have a large belly, and among trees, these are those who dry up, starting from the top.”

Connectedness symbolizes the “crawling” flame of fire, and in relation to people - unification, numerous contacts and the need for such contacts. This is a sign of connections, their emergence; in the trigram cConnectivity people interact. Li is associated with wisdom and intelligence. Such qualities can help you gain popularity, expand your circle of like-minded people, and find new clients. Because of this, Lee is also called “Glory.” This trigram symbolizes the spread of knowledge and ideas.

Gen - Peace and Stillness, Mountain

  • Headsny features: calm, stability, inviolability, stop
  • Body parts: fingers, palm, hands
  • People: youngest son, boy
  • Directedlenition: northeast
  • Element: small Earth

The Gen trigram is most associated with the Chinese zodiac sign (Shi) - A dog, as well as with what is associated with it. “Loyal as a dog” is a very apt, although perhaps incomplete, description. Gen is the trigram associated with the beginning and end of every being.

The treatise “Sho Gua Zhuan” says: “Gen is a mountain, a path and a road, small stones, doors and holes. These are eunuchs and overseers, guards, security guards (as people restraining and monitoring someone). These are the palms and fingers that hold something. These are hard trees with many knots. These are the fruits of the earth (melons).”

The Gen sign means rest, contemplation, deepening in thought, deliberation, analysis of the current situation, detachment, loneliness. This trigram is associated with knowledge and its ordering. This is the period between the end (completion) and the beginning of something new. In Gen, a person prepares to begin a new action.

Blow - Joy, Lake

  • Headsny features: joy, fun, pleasure
  • Body parts: lips and tongue
  • People: youngest daughter, girl
  • Directedlenition: west
  • Element: small Metal

Joy in this case is associated not with the “smiling” shape of the lake, similar to the shape of a human kidney (the traditional shape of the kidney is positively valued in Feng Shui), but with the graphic image of the trigram. At the bottom of the trigram there are two solid (yang) lines, and at the top there is one broken (yin) line.

This means that there is strength and stability within, which manifests itself softly and calmly in the outside world. This is where true joy lies. The lake in this trigram is often associated with a round shape. It correlates with the element of Metal, as well as with the mirror surface of Metal. The soil here is hard and salty, closer to the Metal element than the Earth element. This is dried up earth that no longer accepts water, and therefore does not belong to the element of Earth, the main quality of which is Receptivity, that is, acceptance, absorption (of water in this case). Duy also means water that collects in lowlands and swamps, as well as a body of water in general.

The features of the Dui trigram are well conveyed by the following words from the ancient treatise “Sho Gua Zhuan”: “Dui is a lake. This is the youngest daughter. This is a shaman. These are lips and tongue. This is destruction and breakdown. Of all types of land, this is hard and salty. This is a goat (sheep).” The Tui trigram is associated with joy, but also with destruction, symbolized by fragility and fragility. Most often this is the destruction of old things in order to make room for new ones. Dui is also associated with cooperation and joint discussion of problems.

Summary of trigram meanings

The I Ching, in its detailed commentaries, describes the influence of trigrams on people. All creatures appeared in Excited. They take their final form in Softness. Then they become pure and perfect. In the bright Connectivity they interact. Susceptibility cares about feeding everyone. Joy- this is autumn, the time of harvest, bringing joy to everyone. Danger forces everyone to work. Creation symbolizes struggle, determination and success. Peace And Immobility denotes the beginning and end of every creature.

Additional functions, characterizing individual trigrams are: initiative, acceptance, movement, penetration, immersion, coherence, stillness and joy. In its turn, reasons for change in each trigram are: activity, compliance, motivation, dissipation, hydration, radiance, rest and satisfaction.

Each trigram can interact with any other trigram. Their interaction can be harmonious or inharmonious. It depends on which of the five elements the trigrams belong to.

The five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) are arranged in a certain order and have their own cycles - creation and destruction. Knowing the position of the five elements in these cycles, one can determine the nature of the interaction of the trigrams. Let's find out how the trigram Qian (Metal) and Kun (Earth) will interact. They follow each other in the cycle of generation (Earth gives birth to Metal). Therefore, we can say that their interaction is harmonious.

The interaction of trigrams belonging to the same element (for example, Kun - Earth and Gen - Earth) is also considered harmonious.

Thus, knowing the relationships between trigrams, you can study the types of relationships between a person and various areas of his life. Each sphere of life can also be defined as the energy of a particular trigram. We'll talk about this next time.
