Custom gate designs. Free drawings of sliding gates. Sliding gates with their own hands. What tools and materials will be needed

In most cases, the construction of infrastructure facilities in a summer cottage does not require qualified intervention by builders. Since the construction of a fence and the organization of a check-in are top priorities in the arrangement of any home, it is best to understand what types of entrance structures exist and which materials are most rational to use when installing them, as well as how to make a gate in the country.

For the successful manufacture of any type of gate structure with your own hands, three main components are needed - facing material, tools and a margin of time. Each garden plot and internal area is characterized by the use of a certain type of gate, since each of them has its own opening and installation technology, drawings, recommended finishes, and consumables. To determine the optimal one, it is necessary to identify the properties, advantages and disadvantages of the most used types of gates.

The principle of operation of swing gates is due to their structure, which includes two wings that swing open in opposite directions from each other. The construction of such gates will help save a lot of time when organizing entry and exit.

The main advantages are:

  • ease of installation;
  • reliability;
  • durability.

Flaws:

  • the presence of a cleared space for opening the gate leaves, which must be maintained in good condition in the winter;
  • in the option of using the gate in automatic mode, you will need to purchase two sets of motors for each of the wings, which will significantly affect the total cost.

Possessing an indisputable advantage over the previous type, sliding gates are a structure consisting of one leaf, shifting parallel to the equipped support pillars, along the fence line, in a certain direction.

This category of gates, in turn, is divided into three subgroups, which are suspended, cantilever and rail, therefore, when purchasing one or another set of such gates, it is necessary to understand the specifics of construction and the features of further operation. So, the suspended view provides for the manufacture of a special hinged safety beam, which is the basis for fastening and subsequent movement of the wings.

The cantilever view implies the installation of cantilever mechanisms and a channel beam, as well as the presence of several additional meters for optimal rollback of the gate, and the rail version is inherent in the placement of the guide rail at the bottom of the structure.

The advantages of these gates are:

  • compactness and no need to prepare a cleared space for opening the sashes;
  • the possibility of using automation;
  • practicality;
  • moderate pricing policy;
  • organization of a wide passage, as well as the convenience of remote control of the gate).

Flaws:

  • constant control over the cleanliness and presence of lubrication of roller mechanisms;
  • carrying out a number of preparatory procedures (calculation of the distance for the rollback of the valves and the presence of a perfectly even fence);
  • basic construction skills and knowledge of installation features.

Any owner of suburban housing will be able to cope with the construction of such a structure, following the step-by-step instructions of the masters, however, due to the high cost of component materials and fixtures, as well as the high chance of making mistakes in calculations or assembling the structure, it is more expedient to seek help from specialists. In this case, you can count on a free visit of the master and warranty service during the agreed period.

Being a kind of retractable structures, sliding gates are two leaves, moving apart in two opposite directions. According to the technology of movement, sliding gates are also divided into constituent groups, as well as the type of gate described above. The defining advantage of such an opening mechanism is the reduction in the total weight of the gate by distributing the load on two frames, but this plus is achieved by using two sets of motors, which greatly increases the final cost.

Among the huge variety of materials presented in the assortment of building stores, which are most widely used in the arrangement of entrance gates, metal and wood should be distinguished. In this matter, the choice of one or another raw material mainly depends on the financial capabilities of the owner.

Of course, the preference in this category of materials is given to the profiled sheet, since it has a number of important distinctive advantages, however, like every raw material, it has some disadvantages.

The advantages of such material are:

  • strength due to the rigidity of the fundamental principle;
  • moderate cost;
  • ease of installation;
  • resistance to the harmful effects of the external environment;
  • wide choice of colors;
  • duration of operation.

Flaws:

  • with slight damage to the protective shell of the sheet, corrosion may occur;
  • noise from atmospheric precipitation.

In the presented category of materials, one can single out such a representative as a chain-link mesh. Gates of such a plan have a high light transmission capacity, they have a small windage and are light in weight. In addition, the fastening of the mesh is carried out in a short time and without exhausting efforts.

Currently, wood-based gates are a rare occurrence. This circumstance is due to the endless desire for safety and durability, which are easily achieved using metal products. The implementation of the frame for the doors and the cladding of wood, over time, leads to sagging of the gate and deformation of the entire structure due to its bulkiness and high specific gravity. Of course, the use of wood as the basis for gates, the construction of summer cottages and site decorations highlights the natural component of the appearance and allows you to feel the unity with nature, but it requires special processing of each element and subsequent regular seasonal repairs.

Among the advantages of such raw materials should be highlighted:

  • low cost;
  • the availability of the material;
  • the minimum number of tools and consumables, which significantly saves the budget;
  • pleasant aesthetics;
  • fast installation;
  • ease of processing.

However, the pleasant positive characteristics are largely offset by the negative properties of such a material. The main ones are:

  • short period of operation;
  • low strength;
  • exposure to negative environmental factors;
  • fear of sudden changes in temperature and high moisture content;
  • tendency to ignite.

If, nevertheless, you are determined to use wood for facing the “calling card” of your backyard allotment, then it is most expedient to perform this process on a metal frame from a profile pipe or any other metal support ceilings.

The main purpose of the support base is to securely fix all the constituent elements of the gate. As a rule, the foundation is represented by a reinforced rectangular concrete block placed along the perimeter of the proposed installation of the structure under construction. In our case, concrete pouring is carried out away from the travel line, in the inner house adjoining territory. When manufacturing swing gates, the foundation should be located in the direction of opening the leaves to reduce the load on the hinges in the open state.

Particularly acute is the issue of high-quality pouring of a concrete base in the manufacture of metal gates, since it provides a uniform distribution of pressure of metal products on the soil, protecting the entire structure from shrinkage and distortion.

When starting to work on the arrangement of this element, it should be clearly understood that what quality the foundation will be, such will be the functioning of the gate. When erecting massive objects, it is most rational to prepare deep foundations, for small structures - lightweight supports.

A useful measure preceding the procedure for pouring a reliable foundation is sampling and soil analysis along the perimeter of the future installation sites. Knowing all the features of the soil will subsequently ensure the stability of the gate and determine the optimal type of foundation.

Based on the above recommendations, each owner of a suburban area will be able to easily choose the most suitable gate manufacturing option for him and implement it in the shortest possible time. Any self-made work allows not only to significantly reduce the cost of building a particular object, but also to clearly represent the structure of each connecting component, which subsequently greatly simplifies the possible maintenance and repair processes.

Schemes and drawings

The mechanism of operation of swing gates is quite simple, but automated sliding gates are more difficult to manufacture. We hope the drawings and diagrams we have proposed will help you understand this issue:

In order to choose one of the gate options, you need to learn about each of their varieties separately. The most popular among the population are swing and sliding structures. Each of these types has its positive and negative sides during construction and further use.

Swing design

Swing gates (book) - the most common type of fencing, which can be seen mainly in the territory of private houses and summer cottages. It is popular, because for the construction of this structure, you can choose the most affordable materials, and besides, even beginners can install it with their own hands.

The scheme of the gate-book is a simple frame in the form of two or three pillars, on which the wings are fixed with the help of loops. Depending on which side of the supports they are attached to, it is determined whether the gate will open inward or outward.

The sashes, as a rule, are made of a profile pipe and outwardly look like a frame structure, which can be sheathed with various materials, such as wood or metal sheets. When making the frame and installing the sheathing, it is important to consider that their total weight should not be too large, as the support posts may bend and the gate itself will not function properly.

The main disadvantage in using a swing structure is the presence of free space for opening the valves. It is especially inconvenient to use it during the winter period, when it becomes necessary to clear the snow in order to drive in or leave the yard for vehicles.

Varieties of sliding structures

Sliding gates, which can be made independently, are divided into several subspecies: cantilever, sliding and suspended. The last of these are rarely used as part of the fence, since their design has an important distinguishing feature - the doors are hung from above, which significantly limits the height of cars that can drive into the yard.

Any new type of construction should be taken seriously and with special care, and the construction of the simplest type of gate - swing - too.

For the manufacture of such gates, you will first need to decide on their design, and then prepare a drawing with exact dimensions, thanks to which you can calculate the amount of material needed. Basically, timber or a metal profile is used for supports, and boards and corrugated boards are used as sheathing.

Regardless of the material chosen for construction, before using it, it must be carefully examined for flaws and processed. If it is wood, it is impregnated with several layers of an antiseptic solution, and in the case of metal, all corrosive formations are cleaned with sandpaper. Then the material is cut into pieces in accordance with the dimensions indicated on the drawing. After that, you can proceed directly to the construction of the structure.

Pole installation

The installation of swing gates should begin with the construction of supporting pillars. To do this, it is necessary to put markings, in accordance with the distances in the drawing, and dig 2 or 3 wells, depending on the presence of a gate in the structure. Their depth, as a rule, is no more than 1 meter.

For reference! In some projects, a gate is provided in one of the gate leaves, so a separate post is not required for it. However, this design is not entirely successful, as additional weight can affect the level of the carcass and its possible deviation.

The bottom of the wells is covered with sand or gravel to a thickness of about 0.1 m and carefully compacted. After that, supports are installed in them strictly in a vertical position, the bottom of which is sometimes tied with a metal frame to ensure a more secure fixation.

Then the supports are poured with a concrete mixture to the edges of the pits and wait for it to completely solidify. As a rule, the cement hardening process takes several weeks.

Frame fabrication and construction

While the foundation under the supports is solidifying, you can start making the gate frame. To do this, they take pre-prepared blanks, which are most often made of a steel profile, and weld them together to form a frame. Also, certain crossbars are attached to the frame, on which the gate trim will be fixed.

The skin can be fixed before the frame is hung, or after it is installed. The material is attached to the sashes with self-tapping screws or rivets, and the frame itself is fastened to powerful hinges pre-welded to the supporting pillars.

After the structure is installed, proceed to its external decoration. It must be degreased if it is made of metal, primed and painted. Then, after the paint has dried, closing devices, as well as decorative elements, are hung on the gate.

Performing all the above steps in order, it will be quite simple to make swing iron gates even with your own hands. In addition, the construction of this type of structure is considered the least expensive, since materials for this can be used not only the cheapest, but also not new.

Features of installing sliding gates

Sliding gates are most common in areas that are not subject to heavy snowfalls and a strong decrease in air temperature in winter. Their design is carried out in such a way that when opening and closing the sash moves along a channel mounted in a concrete foundation.

For reference! This type of gate is controlled mainly by an automatic mechanism, which allows you to control them remotely.

As in the case of swing gates, the construction of sliding gates should begin with the development of a sketch and drawing up a design drawing indicating all dimensions. The width of the opening in this case is usually no more than 4 meters, and the height should be equal to the main fence.

In addition, it is necessary to prepare in advance components, materials and tools for work. The most optimal canvases for this are metal profiles and sheets of corrugated board, however, some homeowners use wooden beams or wrought iron elements as cladding structures.

Foundation laying

For the installation of a sliding structure, it is necessary to dig a trench according to the dimensions previously indicated in the drawing. She digs from the side of the gate where the main load falls, that is, where the sash will be fixed.

Further, the bottom of the trench is covered with layers of rubble and sand, which must be compacted. After that, a formwork is installed in it, on top of which a waterproofing material and a frame of reinforcing steel bars are laid.

Then the trench is poured with a concrete mixture, and the channel is placed in it with the shelves down until they are completely immersed. It will be possible to continue the process of installing the gate only a few weeks after laying the foundation, waiting for the cement to dry completely.

Supports in sliding gates, as a rule, are brick or concrete pillars, which are installed in the usual way after the foundation has hardened.

Frame connection and cladding fastening

The frame of sliding gates is most often made of a profile pipe with a section of 60x40 or 60x30 mm. To install jumpers, steel bars with a smaller cross section will be required. All material should be treated in advance with a solvent, cut with a grinder into blanks of the required size and painted.

Parts of a professional pipe with a large cross section are welded together along the perimeter, forming a frame structure. After that, jumpers are installed on its inner part in the middle and diagonally, and a carrier beam is welded to the lower part.

Attention! All welding points should be sanded so that there are no rough sags, coated with an anti-corrosion primer and paint.

Sheathing can be installed immediately, before the frame is fixed to the poles. To do this, the corrugated board is cut into sheets and fixed to the frame with self-tapping screws or special rivets so that the second and subsequent sheets overlap the previous one a little.

At the same time, the distance between the attachment points should not be too large, approximately 1 m 2 of the web comes out with 6 clamps.

Gate installation

To install the finished structure, you first need to assemble the retractable mechanism. To do this, the carriages are mounted on the mounting plate and welded to the channel at the marked distance. Rollers and traps are installed on them and on the sash with the help of bolts and welding, the operation of which must be immediately checked.

To make an entrance gate with automatic control, you must first select the appropriate automation kit, taking into account the size and weight of the entire structure. It is best not to install it yourself, but to entrust the installation to specialists.

No matter how difficult the installation of metal or various structures may seem at first glance, it is still possible to do all the work for this with your own hands. At the same time, self-made fencing will not only save on attracting specialists, but will also bring invaluable experience that can be useful in the future, and will also bring pleasure from the process itself.

The arrangement of any territory requires the presence of a fencing fence. A mandatory attribute of this design is the gate to ensure unhindered entry to the object. Such systems are used both in industrial enterprises and in private areas. Products of this type can vary in complexity and design. Preliminary preparation will allow you to choose the best option for the product, taking into account all the nuances.

Peculiarities

Gates are universal enclosing structures that are installed at the entrance to a specific object or private area. Today, there are many varieties of such structures, which allows you to select them depending on the purpose.

Regardless of which type of gate is considered, the product consists of several basic elements:

  • Canvas. This part is the core of the whole system. Depending on the design, there may be several canvases. Some models may have a complex geometric shape, given in order to create a unique design.
  • Supports. These products take the main load created by the sash or canvas. The form and technical features depend on the method of fastening the gate.

Gates have several distinctive features:

  • Simplicity. The manufacture of some modifications does not require knowledge and experience with different materials.
  • Durability. Quality products can last up to 15-20 years with proper care.
  • Ease of control. Today, all types of gates are complemented by special hinges, rollers and other systems that simplify opening the leaves.
  • Design variety. Products are made using various materials and approaches. This allows you to get not only durable, but also beautiful products.

Kinds

Gates are an essential element of many businesses and private estates. These designs should solve several universal problems. Today you can build them yourself, using special drawings or sketches. Depending on the technical parameters, the gate systems can be divided into several types.

Rollback

The leaf of such a gate moves parallel to the fence or one of the walls. The main components of the products are canvas, cantilever beam, rollers and supports. The attachment scheme for these attributes depends only on the selected type of sash and its location.

The displacement of the frame is carried out due to the cantilever beam and rollers.

The most popular type is the cantilever gate, but there are also suspended and rail systems. The latter, for example, are very similar to console ones, but the movement is carried out along a special rail. There are also so-called folding gates. In them, the sash, as it were, enters into itself. This is achieved by using a metal profile of various thicknesses and its fastening. Sliding gates are universal, as they can be installed both in the country house and at an industrial facility.

Among the disadvantages are the need for free space on one side, as well as the high cost of production.

Swing

Gates of this type consist of one or two wings that open in an arc. The use of swing systems today is very diverse. They are used both in private households and in large agricultural enterprises where additional fencing is needed for territories. The construction of these gates is one of the simplest, which led to their widespread use. For their installation, you will need metal and welding, with which the frame of the canvas is welded, and after the gate is installed in the right place. Today swing gates are used as entry gates.

Rolled

A feature of such structures is that the web is wound on a special shaft when moving up. This was made possible by dividing the canvas into small sections that are interconnected. Theoretically, rolling shutters can be installed outdoors as barrier systems, but this process is quite labor-intensive, so they are mounted in garages or warehouses where the frame can be attached to the base of the building. Among the shortcomings of these structures, one can single out their low strength.

There are varieties in which the canvas is not rolled, but folded into an accordion, but they are used quite rarely, since they are not so practical.

Sectional

Gates of this type consist of a large canvas of several sections, which moves along special guides. Such systems are used in the construction of large warehouses, garages and other industrial facilities. To increase thermal insulation, a heater is inserted inside the canvas. The gate swings up, so no additional space near the base is required. Some modifications can be supplemented with windows and gates.

Among the disadvantages are the high cost and limited application (installation is performed only on solid foundations).

Tilt and turn

materials

Theoretically, gates can be made from almost any material. Today, several types are used for such purposes:

  • Metal sheets. Often, for such purposes, a professional sheet is used, which is selected by thickness and color. The canvas itself is formed from it. Please note that iron sheets not only sheathe the frame, but also form the top layer of roll mechanisms. To protect the metal, the surface is coated with PVC solutions.
  • Pipes. Both round and profile products are used. Homemade gates are often made from a profile: you just need to weld the blanks correctly.
  • Metal corners. They are necessary to create or strengthen the frame. For heavy gates, this material is not applicable.
  • Wood. This material is the most affordable and common, but wooden gates are becoming less common today, as they are quite demanding on climatic conditions.
  • Metal rods. They make decorative items. They are the basis of forged gates, which are distinguished by originality and beauty.

How to DIY

Gates can radically differ from each other in design and technical parameters. The construction of some modifications is technically impossible at home. These include hanging or roll varieties.

Before you start building a gate in a private house, you should take into account a few recommendations, proceed in stages.

  • Decide on the type of structure you plan to build. Today, many prefer retractable systems, but they need free space along the fence. This must be taken into account when planning. At this stage, it is desirable to make all measurements in order to have data on which the main parameters of the canvas will be calculated.
  • Calculate all the parameters of the canvas and the gate (if any). To do this, it is better to make a small drawing, on which all the main dimensions of the future sash should be applied. Particular attention should be paid to cantilever and fan systems: for them, accuracy is most important.
  • Stock up on a tool. The construction of some types of gates requires not only a hammer and welding, but also other auxiliary tools: circulars, grinders and many others.
  • Before starting work, buy building materials in the right amount: plastic pipes, professional pipes, rollers, loops and the like. The required set is determined by which gate you are going to build.

Installation of supports

Technically, supports can be called elements of the system that hold the webs in a certain position. These structures take the main load, so they are built from durable materials. The easiest option is to install fence posts for swing systems.

It consists of several consecutive steps:

  • Initially determined with the location. Often, for double-leaf gates, support posts are placed at a distance equal to twice the width of one leaf plus a small margin. It is also important to consider the direction of movement of the canvas. If it opens into the yard, then you need to leave a place for plowing.
  • Pillar concreting. Concrete structures, wooden beams or metal channels of various thicknesses are used as supports. They are selected depending on the weight of the gate. When concreting, it is important to deepen the pillars by at least 50 cm. It is advisable to set them strictly vertically, since any displacement may affect the possibility of closing the wings.
  • When the concrete is poured and the pillars are exposed, it is necessary to mount a stretch so that the pillars do not change position during the solidification of the mortar.

Installing a support system for sliding panel gates is a more complex process.

It can be described in several ways:

  • Digging a ditch under the lower support beam. It will take the main load from the departure canvas. The ditch is located along the opening, and its length often does not exceed half of its width. The depth of the pit reaches 1-1.5 m.
  • Beam construction. This design consists of a steel channel and metal supports that are welded to it. As a result, the whole design resembles the letter "P". The channel is installed with the legs down, its flat side should be flush with the ground.
  • Concreting. When everything is ready, the moat with the support beam is poured with concrete. It is important to control that the elements do not move in space. The beam must be in a horizontal plane. If this condition is not observed, then the movement of the departure canvas on the rollers will be complicated.
  • When the support beam is frozen, proceed to the formation of the side support pillars. They are needed to optimize the operation of the folding structure. Closers, support rollers, motion sensors and other auxiliary attributes are mounted on them. Many experts recommend first making decorative fence posts, and then attaching the rest of the details to them.

As for armored gates or sandwich panel structures, they are not installed outdoors. These systems are attached directly to the building frame, which acts as supports.

Some modifications are equipped with a metal frame, which is easy to mount, even at the factory.

Installation

Before proceeding with the installation of the gate, they must be assembled. Swing and retractable systems are considered the easiest to assemble. The technology of construction and installation of swing-type structures should be considered.

It can be divided into several stages:

  • Frame installation. The sash can be made of both wood and metal. The latter option is preferable, since the metal is stronger and more durable. Initially, profile pipes are cut into blanks, which, when folded, should form a rectangle. The corners of the elements are interconnected by welding. To strengthen the product, metal corners are welded at the joints, giving rigidity.
  • Sheathing. When the frame is ready, it is sheathed with profiled sheet, wood or chain-link mesh. If you want to get a beautiful and unusual design, then you can use forging elements as a decor. They require experience in working with metal, because it needs to be bent, giving a certain shape. If you do not have experience, you can purchase ready-made options.
  • Fastening. Hinged hinges are welded to the finished canvases and support pillars. It is desirable to do this before laying the stone, so that both halves of the loops can be perfectly aligned. If the hinges are welded correctly, then you can simply "put" the sash on the support pin. At the very end, locks and a gate are installed.

Installing sliding gates is much more difficult. It involves the following operations:

  • Construction of a metal frame. It is made of a strong profile pipe of large thickness. The length of the canvas is often about 50% longer than the width of the opening. This is necessary to create a kind of counterbalance. If the width of the canvas is small, the counterweight can be omitted. The technology also involves cutting metal into blanks and then welding them at corners that need special attention. Along the entire length of the frame, vertical supports should be welded, to which the skin will then be attached.
  • Support beam installation. Outwardly, it resembles a profile pipe with a longitudinal section. The length of the beam is equal to the width of the lower end of the gate. It is attached to it with the help of spot welding.
  • Sheathing. Sheets of profiled steel are placed on top of the frame. They are fixed with the help of special self-tapping screws that are not afraid of moisture and do not damage the metal.

  • Installation of rollers and top guide. Support rolls are attached to a metal platform. It is desirable to fix it by welding on the channel, which acts as a base. The rollers are securely screwed with ordinary bolts. The top guide is a small bar that moves along the rolls. Rolls, in turn, are attached to the supporting pillars. They do not allow the canvas to move to the sides when moving. The procedure ends with the installation of removable polypropylene plugs that are attached to the ends of the pipes, preventing moisture or dirt from entering them.
  • Gate installation. When all systems are fixed, you should put the canvas on the rollers and test. It is desirable to perform all operations at least together, since the gate is rather bulky and heavy.

For more information on how to install sliding gates with your own hands, see the following video.

Automation

The frame of many gates is made of metal, which increases its weight. Opening such systems manually is not always comfortable. Solve this problem with the help of automatic drives. It is impossible to make them yourself, as this requires special equipment. Install automation on roller shutters, sliding and swing gates. This process can be broken down into several sequential steps:

  • drive mount. It is a motor with gears that drive the entire system. They are located inside a special case, which allows you to protect them from external factors. At this stage, the device is adjusted relative to the web so that the rail moves without load.
  • Rail fastening. It is fixed on the canvas so that it coincides with the internal gear. It is important to take the product in length with a small margin. The door must be fully closed when fastening.
  • Setting. In order for the motor to move the sliding gate, it is necessary that the teeth on the gear and on the rack match. Combine them with special methods, which you can ask experienced craftsmen about.
  • Connection. The engine is connected to the electrical network of the house, while using sensors that allow you to open the gate using a phone or a regular button.

Swing gates are one of the most common, as their cost is much less compared to sliding, sliding or lifting. They are fairly easy to install and can be metal or wood. They can be made with your own hands, if you strictly follow the instructions, drawings and instructions, as well as have the necessary materials and tools.

Swing gates: types and design features

According to the design features, bisexual and single-leaf gates are distinguished. Often in garages, hangars and warehouses, a combined version is used - with two doors and a gate. So the territory and materials for the device of a separate entrance are significantly saved.

In garages, they usually put a gate with two wings and a gate

In most cases, we find structures made of metal sheets or wooden picket fences, and only in some public places (hospitals, government organizations and institutions, schools, kindergartens, etc.) - forged, tubular or lattice. They can also be mechanical or automatic.

  1. Metal gates can be made of corrugated board, aluminum (cheaper, but have a shorter service life) or steel sheets with a thickness of 1 to 5 mm. The latter are resistant to various damages, but very heavy, so they require stronger support posts. Swing gates made of corrugated board are an excellent example of a reliable, durable and aesthetically attractive design that can be made in almost a few days from a minimum amount of material. The disadvantage of metal gates is susceptibility to corrosion if not properly maintained.

    Metal swing gates are durable and reliable, but subject to corrosion

  2. Wooden products are durable and reliable, have a great view. Their advantages are an acceptable price and long service life, and the disadvantages are a low degree of fire resistance and susceptibility to decay.

    Wooden swing gates look beautiful, but have a low degree of fire resistance

  3. Very often you can find a combined version - steel supports with metal doors, sheathed with wooden boards, which also serve as an additional element of strength.
  4. Automatic swing gates with an electric drive simplify the process of opening and closing them, since this does not have to be done manually. The principle of operation of the electric drive is the operation of the gearbox, which sets in motion the lever that controls the swing gates. Typically, an automatic installation is equipped with a signal light, an electrical unit, photocells and the lock itself.

    Automatic swing gates are often made of corrugated board

Electric drives in automatic designs are divided into three types:

  1. Lever. They are equipped with a curved lever that sets the sashes in motion. This is a simple and inexpensive drive that meets all the requirements of strength and reliability. It allows you to open gates weighing about 1 ton.
  2. Underground. They are quite difficult to install and maintain, so they are rarely used.
  3. Linear. They give swing gates an aesthetic appearance due to the fact that the lever is tightly mounted to a metal or wooden leaf. They have a large power reserve, so they are more expensive than lever ones.

Swing gate device

The design consists of a frame made of a round or square pipe of a certain diameter and cross section and sashes, each of which can have:

The optimal width of the gate is 3 meters. This distance is sufficient for the entry of any type of passenger car and even a truck. The height of the gate, excluding the rise above the ground, usually reaches 2 m.

Preparation for the construction of swing gates: drawings and sketches

First you need to choose a place for swing gates and carry out some preparatory work:

  • clear the area;
  • remove garbage;
  • level the surface if necessary.

You will also need an accurate design drawing.

An accurate drawing of swing gates will help calculate the required amount of material

What you need for work: materials and tools

For the construction of a double-leaf swing gate frame, you will need:

  • metal profile with a section of 8x10 or 10x10 cm with a wall thickness of about 0.7 cm;
  • profile pipe 6x3x0.2 cm;
  • channel beam with walls 14–16 cm thick.

Decking - light metal sheets coated with special compounds that can significantly extend the life of the material and do not need additional processing and painting - is most often used for sheathing the frame of a swing gate structure. There are several brands:

  • C is a strong and lightweight sheet, which is made of galvanized steel and has a small height of the ribs;
  • HC - has a large corrugation height and sheet height;
  • H - a heavy sheet, which has a high level of strength and reliability, is used for facing large structures.

Usually people purchase a professional sheet of the C8 or C10 brand, as it is considered the lightest and most durable. The number here indicates the depth of the wave. Masters recommend using a sheet with a thickness of 0.4 mm: this way the gate will weigh about 50 kilograms, their installation will not require large lifting devices and mechanisms.

The optimal type of profiled sheets for sheathing swing gates is material grade C8 or C10

Roofing material or other waterproofing material, concrete mortar and metal corners are also required for work.

Material calculation

To determine the total length of the frame, perform the following steps:

  • multiply the width of one sash by 4;
  • multiply the frame height by 6;
  • find the sum of the received numbers.

The number of metal profiles is calculated as follows:

  • we find the area of \u200b\u200bone sash (we multiply its width by the height);
  • the resulting value is multiplied by 2.

If you choose the standard width and height of the sash (2 m), then you will need 8 m 2: two sheets of 4 m 2 in size for two sashes.

The height of the supporting pillars should correspond to the height of the profiled sheet, taking into account the digging into the ground, and this is another plus of 50–70 centimeters.

For the construction of swing gates you will need:

  • drill, bayonet and shovel;
  • drill;
  • electric screwdriver;
  • scissors for metal;
  • square and level.

Step-by-step instructions for the manufacture and installation of gates

After clearing the place for installing the structure and preparing materials and tools, you can begin the main work.

  1. Mark a place for burying the support pillars, and then use a drill to make holes for their installation with a depth of about 1.2 m and a diameter of 0.5 m. If there is no drill, you can use a shovel. The pillars must stand very firmly, since the reliability of future gates also depends on this.
  2. Clean the pipes, removing rust from them, treat with an anti-corrosion agent and wrap the bottom edge with roofing felt. This is necessary to protect parts from corrosion.
  3. At the bottom of each pit, pour a layer of crushed stone about 15 cm thick, install pipes and pour concrete. Close the upper parts of each rack with special plugs so that water does not get inside.
  4. Check the verticality of the supports with a level. To prevent the pillars from slanting, they can be supported with special bars. Wait for the concrete to dry (3-5 days).
  5. Assemble the frame on a special flat area.
  6. Weld it and further strengthen it with steel corners.
  7. Visually divide the long sides of the frame into 3 parts and weld jumpers - stiffeners - to conditional points. You can also weld the strips diagonally.
  8. Weld the hinges to the jumper attachment points.
  9. Line the frame with a profiled sheet, having previously cut out rectangular recesses for the hinges with a metal knife.

    Notches for loops on a profiled sheet are cut with a knife for metal

  10. For fastening, use hexagon head screws matched to the color of the base material.

    To fasten the profiled sheet using screws with a hex head

  11. It is better to weld the hinges when the frame is still on the site. To make the gate impossible to remove, weld additional mounting brackets above the upper part.
  12. Hang the gate on the hinges and place a wooden stand under the middle of the structure.

Electric drive for swing gates

This part can also be made by hand if you are good at electricity. Its main part is a mechanism from a parabolic antenna with a worm gear. Old-style satellite TV has a rotary mechanism that can be installed on swing gates. The worm gear acts like a swivel mechanism, but can be operated from a low voltage of 36 volts. Factory drives work only from the mains of 220 volts.

For assembly you will need:

You can assemble the device in one day.

Installation of the factory electric drive

If you prefer a more reliable system, it is better to use automatic factory devices. But first you need to decide where the doors will open - inward or outward.

Drive installation tools:

  • electric drill;
  • pliers;
  • screwdriver;
  • roulette;
  • insulating tape;
  • hammer.

To select the type of device, you will need to measure the distance between the hinges and the inner side of the support:

Next, we determine the width of the sash, and also take into account the mandatory wind load. The gate leaves must move easily so that the electric drive can smoothly open and close them. If the structure opens inwards, any electric actuators can be installed. For steel poles, it is best to take a linear or lever model, and for brick - only the second. If the gate leaves open outward, then any system that is mounted inside the opening will do. It will take about 15 centimeters of space on each side of the structure.

Operating procedure:

  1. Weld metal amplifiers around the column when mounting the electric drive on a brick pillar.
  2. Set the hydraulic drive to manual mode and connect the fasteners to the gate by welding.
  3. If a linear model is selected, then after welding, leave at least 1 cm after the gate is fully opened for smooth and free movement. Check the movement of the leaves and the clarity of the movement of the electric drive, and then install the stops and motors.
  4. Put the straps, hem the consoles and turn on the system. Then equip the automation with switches.
  5. Install a signal lamp and a photographic device that cannot be equipped until all other systems are adjusted.

After welding, it is necessary to grind all seams well to remove scale and excess metal. Pillars and frame are best treated with a special anti-corrosion agent and painted.

Hasps for swing gates

If you plan to install automation on the gate, then complex locks and bolts will not be needed. But you can put them on if you want. Vertical models are one of the most common, as they are easy to make with your own hands from ordinary fittings:

An overhead horizontal deadbolt is usually installed on swing gates made of corrugated board on the transverse slats of the frame.

Video: how to make an electric gate

Swing gates with electric drive can be built independently. Following the instructions for mounting and sheathing the frame, installing an automatic system, the owner of the house will be able to install a reliable and durable structure on his site.

Fencing an industrial area, public areas or private ownership is unthinkable without installing a fence. An indispensable part of it is the entrance gate. You can save money by making such an object yourself.

Swing gate designs, types and designs

Swing gates have a simple design and are the easiest to automate. This is especially important for doors installed at production sites with high traffic.

The design of the gate without a mechanism for opening and closing them is inconvenient, since in this case you will have to get out of the car, open and lock the leaves one by one, drive into the yard, and then perform all the steps in reverse order. This takes a lot of time, and it is especially unpleasant to do this in bad weather.

Photo gallery: various types of gate construction

Picket fence swing gates are easy to make and require few materials. Swing gates of a metal sheet are reliable and durable Lightweight swing gates made of forged lattice are not only the protection of the site, but also its decoration Solid wood leaf makes the gate more secure

Choice of opening direction

Gate leaves can open in two directions: outward or inward.

The first option is preferable when the yard has a small area. The disadvantage of this solution is the need to install the gate opening/closing mechanism in a hidden position. To do this, it is placed in a pit. This solution requires additional costs for sealing and entails the need to lengthen the leaf axes to install the drive lever. When opening inward, the mechanism is installed directly on the gate post, and the levers are attached to the door leaf.

The choice of web design

At this design stage, errors most often occur, the cause of which is unaccounted for the direction and strength of the wind at the gate installation site. If the area is characterized by strong steady winds, it is preferable to choose a lattice structure, since it has less windage compared to a solid canvas. Under the influence of wind loads, the mechanisms for moving the wings are overloaded and fail faster.

General design features

On any gate there are a number of elements that you need to pay attention to:

  1. Hinges - parts that fasten the sashes to the supporting pillars. Their number and power should ensure smooth movement of the valves for a long time.
  2. The central latch is an element needed to install the sashes in the closed position.
  3. Extreme clamps are details for temporary fixation of the leaves when the gate is wide open.
  4. Constipation - a massive latch, a bolt with hinges or simply hinges for a lock, fixed on the wings 1–1.2 m from the lower edge.

Preparatory work on the device of the gate

The result of all work on the assembly and installation of the gate depends on the thoroughness of the preparation. Preparatory work includes the following:

  • development of a preliminary design of the entrance with detailing and drawing up a bill of materials;
  • revision of the remnants of building materials from previous construction and the inclusion of suitable details in the project;
  • purchase of materials in accordance with the material sheet;
  • production of parts, purchase of related materials and missing tools.

According to the above sketch, it remains to calculate the number of elements for each position in order to obtain a material sheet. It is also necessary to think over the methods of execution (welding, riveting), the material for the protective coating, the dimensions of the concrete bases and other structural elements. These items in the required quantities are also entered in the bill of materials.

Selection of materials for swing gates

This is perhaps the most important point. Even a perfectly executed gate may not look at all on the site if they are not in harmony with the fence of the site or the color of the roof of the house. A uniform style is important.

The most common metal products in various combinations.

In this case, the combination of brick, wooden picket fence and brown corrugated board seems doubtful. Such a solution can only be in harmony with a wooden house on the site.

The photo below shows an example of a more successful combination of a gate with a fence in color and style. This version is made of almost the same materials. Elements of the simplest forging from a bar are available for self-production.

The use of a relatively new material in combination with metal - cellular and monolithic polycarbonate - must be recognized as successful.

The advantages of this material are its high strength, ease of processing and a large selection of tints and degrees of transparency.

It is impossible to list or show all the variety of combinations of different materials for the manufacture of swing gates. A successful solution with a minimum of costs depends only on the contractor.

Materials and tools for the manufacture of swing gates

Everything necessary for the manufacture of the gate has already been calculated at the stage of design and preparation of the material sheet. This applies not only to the main, but also to auxiliary materials. Only wooden beams need to be added to make the slipway, which is necessary to ensure the flatness of the sash during the assembly process.

When installing the slipway, attention should be paid to the flatness of its supporting elements. Since this is only an auxiliary structure, there is no need to saw off the protruding ends during the assembly process, and the material can later be used for other purposes.

Tools, fixtures and materials

Considering the need for these products, we will specify the initial conditions. Suppose that it is necessary to make gate wings of a combined design using metal profiles in the form of a rectangular pipe 80x40 mm for the main frame, the same material 40x40 mm in size for jibs and stiffeners, as well as a wooden board - lining to fill the leaf leaf.

For work you will need:

  1. Manual grinder (grinder) for cutting a metal profile and processing the cut point in order to grind sharp edges and remove burrs.
  2. Abrasive discs for grinders.
  3. Locksmith's square - for marking the place of cutting.
  4. Three-meter tape measure - for taking measurements.
  5. Clamps for fixing parts before welding.
  6. Household welding machine.
  7. Electrodes appropriate for leaf material.
  8. Hammer for removing scale from welds.
  9. Saw-hacksaw for wood for working with lining.
  10. Screwdriver - for fastening wooden parts to the sash frame.
  11. Self-tapping screws - for the same purposes.
  12. Electric drill - for drilling holes for self-tapping screws of the appropriate size.
  13. Locksmith vice - for fixing bars in the manufacture of clamps.
  14. Construction plumb line - to control the verticality when installing sashes on support pillars.
  15. Building level for adjusting the position of the supporting structures of the slipway.
  16. Metal primer and appropriate paint - for applying a protective coating to metal parts.
  17. Compositions for antiseptic treatment of wooden parts and fire impregnation for wood.

In the course of the work, other tools and fixtures may be needed.

Installation of swing gates, step by step instructions

Installation of the gate must begin with the installation of support pillars.

Installation of support poles

For supporting pillars, rectangular pipes measuring 100x100 mm are used, preferably galvanized. If the pipe is electric-welded, then the longitudinal seam must be located on the opposite side from the installation site of the canopies.

Pole pits are best made using a garden drill with a diameter of 250 mm.

It is convenient to drill holes for support poles with a garden drill

The depth of the pit depends on the depth of soil freezing in the area of work. For the Moscow region, this value is 180 cm, therefore, the pit should be 15 cm deeper. If this requirement is not met, in winter, as a result of soil movement, the support pillars may be skewed.

Drainage should be provided at the bottom of the pit. To do this, sand is poured to the bottom (layer height 10 cm), then gravel of the middle fraction (layer height 5 cm).

Concreting is carried out in the following order:

Simultaneously with the concreting of the support posts, it is necessary to make a central support with the installation of a metal embedded part on it. It is more convenient to make holes for locking pins later - when hanging the leaves with markings in place.

Sash manufacturing

While the concrete is standing, you can install the slipway and proceed to the manufacture of swing gate leaves. For this you need:

  • measure the distance between the support pillars and, if necessary, make adjustments to the longitudinal dimensions;
  • install a slipway;
  • prepare sash parts for assembly;
  • lay out the structural elements on the slipway, fix them with clamps;
  • check the correct layout on the diagonals and dimensions, correct if necessary;
  • weld the structure;
  • after all welded joints are made, remove the slag with a hammer, inspect each seam, boil again if necessary;
  • paint the surface with primer, dry;
  • apply a final protective coating (paint);
  • install the inner leaf of the sashes, fix in the chosen way.

Sash installation

The sashes must be installed in the “closed” position on a temporary mount, while:

  1. Provide gaps between the support posts and sashes equal to the size of the gate hinges. For this, it is convenient to use wooden spacers. The gap between the leaves should be from 10 to 50 mm.
  2. The distance from the lower edge of the wings to the ground must be at least 50 mm.
  3. According to the height of the sash, they are installed on temporary linings.
  4. Check the freedom of movement of the valves when they are opened. To do this, you need to install a bar perpendicular to the leaves on the lower edge of the gate. The length of the strap should be equal to the width of the sash. Set the bar horizontally in level. The far end of the bar must not touch the ground. Otherwise, the sash will hit the ground when opened.
  5. After taking all the necessary measurements, you can install canopies. To do this, they are placed in the provided gap and welded to the supporting pillars and sashes.

    Canopies of swing gates are welded to the supporting pillars

  6. If galvanized pipes were used for the poles, the welds must be carefully cleaned and painted over with a special paint, which consists of 95% zinc powder. Otherwise, the metal will actively corrode, and the poles will quickly fail.
  7. Mark and drill holes for the fixing pins, install them in place.
  8. A plate of a suitable size must be welded onto the top of the support post to plug the hole.

    Fixing pins are needed only during a long absence of the owners or in strong winds to avoid damage to the mechanism from wind load

The choice of automation for swing gates

Most often, electric linear and lever drives, as well as hydraulic drives, are used as a device for opening / closing gates.

Linear drives

The popularity of linear mechanisms is due to their lower cost compared to lever mechanisms and higher power and stability in operation. Their market share is about 95%.

The design feature of such mechanisms is the use of a worm screw, which allows you to endure increased loads. An important factor that determines the popularity of linear actuators is also the ability to use them to open gates both inwards and outwards. An additional advantage is the possibility of their installation on narrow poles.

Lever gate drives

The main feature of such mechanisms is smooth operation when opening and closing, which is due to the design features.

The motor-reducer through the worm gear sets in motion the levers associated with the wings. Opening / closing is made in any direction at an angle of up to 110 °.

Gate automation

The mechanization of the gate does not give any advantages if used without automatic control. It is convenient to open them with a simple push of a button on the remote control.

Designations in the figure:

  1. Left leaf drive.
  2. Right leaf drive.
  3. Control Panel.
  4. Signal receiving device.
  5. Photocells for security.
  6. Signal lamp.
  7. receiving antenna.
  8. Racks for installing photocells.

Here is the minimum set of control devices to ensure the operation of swing gates.

Additional devices for swing gates

Automated swing gates do not require any additional structural elements.

But situations are possible when the entire structure is subjected to critical loads. First of all, this applies to solid doors in strong winds. Therefore, traditional bolts and pins at the bottom of the wings are used for insurance. The material for their manufacture is usually the remnants of the main structure of the valves, bent steel bars with a diameter of 12–16 mm. For lock loops, a metal strip 4 mm thick is used.

All these additional elements are used during a long absence of the owners or in the event of adverse weather conditions.
