Calculation of metal tile semi-hipped roof online calculator. Calculation of the material for the roof of metal. Types of roofs and roofs made of metal tiles

Metal shingles have a reputation for being modern, sophisticated and easy to install roofing. Before fixing this material, they must make calculations, taking into account the size of one sheet, the shape of the roofs, the step of the crate and some other nuances.

Calculation of metal tiles on the roof

There will be no doubts about the quality of the installation of a metal tile roof if you determine in advance the optimal size of the sheet and calculate how many self-tapping screws are required. When calculating the amount of metal tiles, pay attention to the shape of the roof, which can be not only single-pitched or gable, but also complex, for example, hip.

Sheet metal dimensions

Width and length, and hence the area of a sheet of metal tiles is conditionally divided into two types: full and useful. The first type refers to the value that is measured from one to the other edge of the product, and the second - the size without taking into account those centimeters that are lost when creating overlaps.

When purchasing material, it is the useful width and length that are taken into account. In other words, the calculated amount of building materials is rounded up.

The useful width is the width without overlaps.

The length of a sheet of metal tiles varies from 40 cm to 8 m, and the width is between 116 and 119 cm. The length of the product in the transverse direction is not paid much attention. Much more important is the length of the tile sheet. The optimal size is 4.5 m.

A smart builder will prefer to use sheets whose length matches the distance from the ridge to the roof eaves. He will refuse this idea only if the ridge board is located too far from the upper edge of the walls. Still, lifting sheets 6–8 m long upstairs at home is a very difficult task. In addition, huge pieces of material during the ascent to the roof can severely scratch the walls.

When the dimensions of the roof do not allow covering it with one sheet of metal tile from the eaves to the ridge, they buy material longer than necessary, and simply cut off the extra centimeters. Short sheets are not taken: they will have to be mounted with an overlap, which will lead to a significant waste of material and stupid waste.

Calculation of self-tapping screws for fixing metal tiles

When installing metal tiles, self-tapping screws of different sizes are used:

 • 4.8x35 mm or 4.8x20 mm (for fixing the material on a wooden crate);
 • 4.8x20 mm (for connecting the edges of sheets in geometrically complex areas of the roof);
 • 4.8x50 mm or 4.8x70 mm (for places where the material needs to be fixed especially strongly).

What will be the consumption of self-tapping screws, it is necessary to determine in advance, taking into account several nuances:

 • fasteners are inserted into all places where the lower part of the material wave is in contact with the crate;
 • near the ridge beam, self-tapping screws are immersed in each wave of material;
 • at intermediate stages, fasteners are twisted into sheets through a wave;
 • when creating an overlap, self-tapping screws are placed at a distance of a meter from each other along the crate.

Fasteners are inserted into the metal tile often only in the area of the eaves and ridge

Fasteners inserted into the material at short intervals will soon cause the roof to leak. And self-tapping screws, rarely used, will not be able to hold the metal sheets in place, which will lead to serious deformation of the roof.

Usually, 7 self-tapping screws are enough to fasten 1 m² of metal tiles, under which a crate is installed with an average pitch of 50 cm. True, this rule only works with a roof of a simple configuration. With the complexity of the shape of the roof, the required number of fasteners increases.

To determine exactly how many self-tapping screws 4.8x35 mm, 4.8x20 mm and 4.8x50 mm will be needed to install a metal roof, you should know the following parameters:

 • approximate consumption of self-tapping screws per 1 m²;
 • roof area;
 • section of the board of the crate;
 • slope length;
 • slope width;
 • required number of sheets of material.

It looks like a scheme for fixing 4 sheets of material with screws, laid out in two rows

Using a self-drawn scheme for attaching metal tiles to self-tapping screws, let's try to perform the calculations. Imagine that we need to fix the material on a roof with an area of 150 m², boards with a section of 30x150 m are used as lathing, the length of the slope is 7.75 m, the width is 10.2 m, and 40 sheets of metal tiles were purchased for the roof device. Now let's do the following tasks:

 1. Find the required number of fasteners with a size of 4.8x20 mm. As the diagram shows, 21 self-tapping screws are required for each side joint. It turns out that for all 18 seams that will appear when the sheets are joined, 378 fasteners 20 mm long will be needed.
 2. Let's determine how much you need to buy self-tapping screws with a size of 4.8x35 mm - fasteners for inter-row joints. According to the rules, each seam formed as a result of combining two rows of material is fixed with 6 self-tapping screws. On a roof with an area of 150 m², there are 20 such joints, which means that for installation work at the inter-row joint, it is necessary to purchase 120 fasteners 3.5 cm long.
 3. Let's calculate how many fasteners with a size of 4.8x35 mm will go to work in the ridge area and on the eaves. In these areas, one sheet of metal tiles is fixed with three self-tapping screws. Therefore, on the roof, where it is planned to place 40 sheets, 120 fasteners will have to be used in the area of the ridge and eaves.
 4. Find the number of fasteners 4.8x35 mm required for mounting metal tiles on the sides of the roof. At one end, 22 screws are usually used. It turns out that in the process of working on 4 ends of a gable roof, 88 fasteners will be needed.
 5. We will find out how many self-tapping screws 3.5 cm long will need to be screwed into the central part of the sheets of metal tiles. Once in the middle of one piece of material, according to the rules, 5 fasteners are inserted, it turns out that 200 screws will have to be used for all 40 sheets. If we take into account all the previous cases of using fasteners with a size of 4.8x35 mm, then it turns out the following: before installing metal tiles, you need to purchase about 550 self-tapping screws (with a margin).
 6. We determine how much fasteners with a diameter of 4.8 mm and a length of 5 cm should be bought. Taking into account the wavelength of the roofing material and the degree of reliability of fastening in the area of the ends, ridge and cornice, we decide to purchase not about 360 self-tapping screws.

If we add up all the results obtained, it turns out that for the installation of metal tiles on the roof, we need to prepare about 1300 self-tapping screws.

The number of sheets of metal tiles for roofing in one and two slopes

To find out how many sheets of metal tiles will have to close the roof in one slope, use certain data:

 • nominal and useful width and length of one sheet of material;
 • length and width of the roof slope;
 • overlap dimensions in width and length.

The overlap of sheets along the length is usually equal to 10, 15 or 20 cm. And the size of the overlapping of the edges of the material on top of each other in width is determined by the useful width of the product. If the nominal sheet parameter is 1.1 m, and the useful parameter is 1.1 m, then the overlap in width will be the difference between these values (0.08 m).

The largest overlap of sheets in length is 20 cm
 1. We multiply the width of the slope by the length and find out that the roof area is 90 m².
 2. We divide the width of the slope by the useful width of a sheet of metal tiles and get the number of rows along the width of the roof (9 / 1.1 = 8).
 3. To the length of the roof slope, we add the dimensions of the overlaps and the distance by which the rafters extend beyond the walls, as a result of which we find the total length of the slope (10 + 0.3 (2 overlaps of 0.15) + 0.1 = 10.4).
 4. We divide the total length of the slope by the useful length of the sheet in order to determine how many pieces of material one row along the length of the roof will consist of (10.4 / 3.5 = 3).
 5. We multiply the number of rows along the length of the roof by the number of rows along the width, that is, we find out how many sheets of material will be used during the construction of the roof (3x8 = 24).

According to our calculations, 24 sheets will need to be fixed on a roof of 90 m².

If you need to determine the amount of metal tiles for the construction of a gable roof, then the calculations will be exactly the same. True, one more action will be added to them - multiplication by 2.

Exceptions can only be in the situation when the roof slopes are not the same. In this scenario, for each slope, the amount of material is calculated separately.

Calculation of metal tiles for a hip roof

When the roof is hipped, that is, it has four slopes, in order to find out the required amount of metal tiles, the structure is conditionally divided into sections (into two isosceles triangles and two trapezoids). Next, the calculation is carried out in several stages:

Video: how to calculate the number of metal tiles on the roof

Calculator for calculating metal tiles

 1. Choose the type of roof.
 2. Note if the roof will be insulated.
 3. Specify the width and length of the slopes.
 4. Mark whether it is necessary to calculate the soffit.
 5. Specify the type of soffit.
 6. Write down the width of the cornice in the cell.
 7. Specify the width of the front board.
 8. Select material.

Calculation of the crate under the metal tile

Before calculating the amount of material for the construction of the crate, do the following:

 • tape measure the width and length of the slopes;
 • determine how much the crate will go beyond the eaves;
 • take into account the consumption of frontal boards;
 • decide what will be the base for the roofing material - solid or sparse.

On the left is a sparse crate for a metal tile, and on the right is a solid one.

The consumption of edged boards for the construction of a continuous crate can be determined without any hassle. Suppose that the roof area is 80 m², and for the construction of the base for the finishing coat, boards 0.15x6 m in size and 25 mm thick were purchased. In this situation, the calculation will look like this:

 1. 0.15 m x 6 m = 0.9 m² (one board area).
 2. 80 m² / 0.9 m² = 89 pcs. (required number of boards).
 3. 0.15 m x 0.025 m x 6 m = 0.0225 m³ (volume of 1 board).
 4. 89 pcs. x 0.0225 m³ = 2.0025 m³ (cubic capacity of all necessary boards).

When the crate is sparse, the calculations are carried out taking into account the selected distance between the boards. Suppose the material is to be laid out every 35 cm on a roof with an area of 80 m², in which the width of the slopes is 8 m and the length is 5 m. Then the calculation will consist of 5 steps:

 1. 5 / 0.35 = 14 pcs. (number of boards on one slope).
 2. 14 * 8 = 112 m. p. (Total molding of boards on one slope).
 3. 112 m.p. * 2 = 224 m.p. (total molding of boards on two slopes).
 4. 224 m. p. / 6 = 37 pcs. (number of six-meter boards).
 5. 37 * 0.0225 = 0.8325 cubic meters (total volume of lumber for battens).

Calculating what will be the consumption of metal tiles on the roof and the boards of the sheathing under it will be easy if such data as the area of the roof and the dimensions of the materials used are known. By the way, so that independent calculations make it possible to build a roof without problems, the numbers obtained during the calculations should be rounded up.

For the arrangement of roofs of various buildings, one of the most preferred materials is metal tile. Compared to other coatings, it has a relatively low cost, is durable, easy to install, beautiful appearance and a variety of colors. Before installing this material, it is necessary to calculate the metal tile on the roof in order to know exactly how much money is required for roofing work.

This material is polymer-coated roofing sheets, for the manufacture of which galvanized steel with a thickness of 0.4 to 0.6 m is used. It is first covered with a layer that protects the zinc from corrosion and oxidation. After that, it is primed. Next, a paint and varnish coating is applied to the front side, which protects the material from atmospheric phenomena, and also decorates it. At the end, the necessary drawing is applied on the sheet.

It should be remembered that the right amount of material is almost never equal to the area of the roof. If you do not save (which is not worth doing during construction work), then add 10% to it. The result obtained is the area of the required coverage. As practice shows, depending on the roof structure, the area of the required material exceeds the area of the roof by 5-10%.

The discrepancy between these parameters is due to two reasons. Firstly, cutting material is never without waste, which can be from 5 to 40% of the used coating. Secondly, metal tile sheets cannot be arbitrarily turned over, and they are stacked overlapping each other. These factors complicate the calculation of the required coverage.

Types of metal tiles

Before you calculate the metal tile on the roof, you should know its varieties. The most important indicators that you should pay attention to are the thickness of the sheets and the type of coating. The price for material with a thickness of 0.4 and 0.5 mm is almost the same, but the guarantee for them is different: for 0.4 mm - 10 years, and for metal tiles 0.5 mm - 15 years.

There are five main types of metal tile coating:

 • polyester;
 • matte polyester;
 • polyvinyl difluoride or PVDF;
 • plastisol;
 • matt pural (Pural® matt).

The characteristics of the material depend just on the type of coating

Polyester is the most inexpensive material, 25 microns thick, which is made from polyester paint. It does not lose its color during the entire operation and is able to serve in any climatic conditions. Matte polyester is also resistant to the negative effects of climatic factors, mechanical stress, etc., and has an aesthetic appearance. Its thickness is 35 microns.

Matte pural is made of polyurethane, resistant to temperature extremes and corrosion. Retains its color over time. Coating thickness - 50 microns. One of the most durable types of metal tiles. The absolute leader in this indicator is plastisol, which has the largest thickness - 200 microns. Resistant to both atmospheric and mechanical phenomena. Available with embossed surface.

The PVDF coating is the most durable. Made from 80% polyvinyl difluoride and 20% acrylic. Its thickness is small - 27 microns, the main color is metallic. Does not fade in the sun and is suitable for all climatic conditions, and also requires almost no maintenance.

Sequence of calculations

The basic parameter is the roof area. However, it is only valid for approximate calculations. More accurate data will be obtained by determining the area of each slope.

Another equally important value is the width of the sheets. The wave pitch is usually 250 mm. Different manufacturers produce sheets of one or another width, which should be taken into account.

Depending on the size of the roof, it is necessary to select sheets of suitable length. As a rule, this parameter is standard for different manufacturers, but some can order sheets up to 8 m long. In construction, the following rule applies: the longer the sheets, the less waste is generated.

Basically, the most suitable length of sheets is 4 - 5 m. The number of sheets is calculated as follows:

 1. The greatest length of a metal tile sheet is divided by its working width. The resulting number is rounded up. The calculation is done horizontally, not vertically.
 2. The number of sheets for one row and their total length is calculated by measuring the length of the slope from top to bottom. This takes into account the cornice overhang equal to 0.05 m.
 3. The vertical overlap of sheets is usually 0.15 m per row. If you are going to lay sheets of metal tiles in one row, and their length allows this, then the overlap is not taken into account during the calculations. When in contact with another slope, the length of the sheet should be enough for the bevels to completely overlap.
 4. All indicators after measurements are added. The result will be the required length.

Calculation of metal roofing can be carried out by professionals, taking into account the characteristics of the building, in which case the amount of waste will decrease. The metal tile itself is available in different sizes: from 70 cm to 12 m. The most suitable option is 4-4.5 m.

As we have already said, the calculation of metal tiles includes counting the sheets on each slope and calculating their area. In addition, it is required to calculate the number of sheets on each row, taking into account the cut sheets. If we take into account the geometry of each slope and their dimensions, as well as the length and width of the overhangs, then it will not be difficult to make a general calculation.

For a gable roof, the calculation of this material is carried out as follows. Let's assume that the size of the rectangular slopes is:

 • width: 8 m;
 • height: 6 m.

With a sheet length of 4 m and a width of 1.8, the overall result will be: 8x6x1.18 = 56.64 m 2. We round the number upwards and get 60 m 2. For other rectangular slopes, the material is calculated in a similar way.

Calculation of the truss system

To calculate the cross section and pitch of the rafters, it is better to invite specialists, since the service life of the roof will depend on the calculations. From incorrect measurements, it will quickly sag.

Rafter beams must be 100x50 and 150x50 mm in size. The most suitable distance between them is from 60 to 90 cm. It depends on the weight of the material. To increase this distance, a crate is laid across. The moisture content of wood should not exceed 22%. For safety reasons, before starting installation, it is necessary to carry out antiseptic and fire-fighting treatment.

Before starting work, you need to check the roof slopes diagonally. The perimeter of the structure should be rectangular, and the fractures of the slopes and the ridge of the cornice should be horizontal. The slope of the roof for metal tiles must be at least 14 degrees.

Counting the number of hydro and vapor barrier layers

As a rule, films for hydro- and vapor barriers are produced in rolls of 75 square meters. It will not do without overlaps, so the usable area remains 65 meters squared. To calculate the number of rolls of insulation, it is necessary to divide the area of the roof by 65. The resulting figure is rounded up to a higher number.

To calculate the required number of self-tapping screws, the total area of the roof is multiplied by 8. That is how many of them fit on one sheet.

Calculation of the cost of the roof

The last question that probably worries all developers is how to calculate the cost of a metal roof. First of all, it depends on the area of the roof (the length of the ridge and slopes). Further, additional materials should be taken into account: heaters, hydrobarriers, etc. There are now many online calculators on the Internet to calculate the cost, but the resulting figure is unlikely to be accurate. As a rule, it is worth adding 10 - 15% to it. This is especially true for multi-pitched roofs and roofs with a complex structure.

The final amount will be obtained only after measurement on the spot according to the installed rafter system.

The price of these tools must necessarily be included in the total cost of work, since they will definitely be needed when installing a metal tile structure. It should be noted that when cutting metal tiles, the use of an abrasive wheel, that is, a grinder, is prohibited.

General conclusions

So, metal tile is a fairly popular material that has long been used as a roofing. Careful calculation is necessary before construction work, however, it will not help to the end either, since as a result a lot of waste is generated, especially in the case of a hipped roof, and the cost of one square meter still does not say anything. In addition, it is necessary to take into account a large number of fastening materials, which will increase costs by 7 - 8%. All these nuances are important when calculating the material for the roof, and not only metal tiles.

When performing roofing, it is important to correctly calculate the required amount of roofing material. Especially if a metal roof is used. The calculation of metal roof tiles, unlike other coating materials, has some characteristic features that can cause some problems. Therefore, you need to be able to correctly calculate the required amount of coverage for your home.

The main features of the dimensions of the metal tile

Before using this material for installation, it is worth paying attention to the main feature - wave inhomogeneity. The entire length of the wave has drops, smooth rises and falls, which do not allow determining the exact length of the sheet.

However, wave inhomogeneity has an effect only indirectly during the overlap. It follows from this that the usable area depends on the shape of the material.

Important! It is worth highlighting the main feature of the metal roof, which concerns its size, especially the length. Whatever the length, it is always a multiple of 5 mm, and the sheet itself can have a length of 80 to 800 cm.

The most popular are segments with the following lengths - 362 and 363 centimeters, 222 and 223 cm. The overlap of these segments is 12 and 13 centimeters. It is also worth paying attention to the common width sizes of this material - 116, 118, 119 centimeters. The overlap in this group of sizes is 9.8, 6 centimeters.

How to calculate area

A standard hip covering, which has four end slopes, is usually made of metal tiles, but before equipping it, it is worthwhile to determine in advance the required amount of roofing. Usually its quantity is laid down at the stage of design and estimate documentation.

The calculation of the roof of metal tiles can be done independently or using a special online calculator. If an online calculator is used, then with it you can determine not only the required amount of material, but also calculate the cost of all necessary products.

But it is worth paying attention that the roof calculator can be used for the following types of structures:

 • For a shed roof;
 • For a gable roof with equal or different slopes;
 • For three-slope;
 • For a hipped metal roof;
 • For multi-pitched roofing;
 • For covering the attic type;
 • For a four-pitched roof with the same slopes (a hip roof made of metal).

The calculation of the amount of metal tiles is carried out taking into account the following requirements:

 1. Before performing the calculation of the required material, it is worth evaluating the entire amount of work being done. This can be done even without taking into account the dimensions of the sheets that will be purchased for shelter;
 2. Regardless of what kind of coverage of the house will be - a cold roof or a warm roof made of metal tiles, it is necessary to measure the length of the slopes;
 3. Next, the width of the slopes from the ridge to the overhang of the cornice is measured;
 4. For a cold roof, hip, attic, it is imperative to measure the ribs;
 5. After that, it is worth finding out what shape the future roof will be, namely what type of geometric figure will be used in the construction of the coating - a triangle, a trapezoid, a rectangle.

The roof is often arranged in the form of a triangular or rectangular shape, in rare cases it is made in the form of a trapezoid. But regardless of this, you need to know the formula for calculating the coverage area.

Formulas for different types of roofs:

 • For rectangular shapes, the formula is applied - S = LW, where L is the length, W is the width of the slope $
 • For a trapezoid cover, a slightly different calculation formula is used - S = h (A + B) / 2, where A is the length of the overhang, B is the length of the ridge, and h is the distance between the overhang and the ridge;
 • For triangular, the following formula is applied - S = ab / 2, where a and b are legs.

Determining the number of sheets

Important! Regardless of what the roof looks like - gable, four-slope, three-slope, it is necessary to correctly calculate the required amount of material. Its calculations can be performed online in a calculator using the necessary formulas.

The main thing is to know the dimensions of the future coating, with the help of these indicators it will be easy to calculate the amount of metal tiles. The thing is that initially you have to deal with a rectangle, which in the future already takes on the form of the required shape.

Therefore, at the initial stage, you can use the formula for a rectangular roof. Next, the resulting area must previously be divided by the dimensions of the sheet and perform calculations of the metal tile online using a calculator. The resulting dimensions can be used to purchase the desired product. It is advisable to add another 5-10% to the dimensions.

The purchase of roofing accounts for a large part of the budget, so it is worthwhile to carefully calculate the metal roof tiles.

Buying a large number of sheets and in reserve is not rational. Therefore, it is important to accurately calculate the area of all slopes and, using formulas, derive the exact number of sheets of metal tiles.

When calculating, the shape and size of the "waves" of the coating should be taken into account. They are selected based on the model of purchased tiles. These parameters are indicated on the packaging with the material and will serve to account for the overlap between the sheets.

Standard sheet sizes

Manufacturers of building materials try to adhere to established standard sizes, however, there are types on the market that differ from the standard. If necessary, you can always make and order tiles of the desired size.

The main parameters in the calculation of metal roof tiles are: the width and length of the sheet. They are of two types: nominal and effective.

Nominal Width- the distance between two points of the extreme edges of the sheet, excluding overlap allowances.

Manufacturers of tiles are trying to produce sheets with a nominal width of 1160-1190 mm. The nominal length can be from 500 to 6000 mm.

The most popular sheets with a length of 4500 mm. They are extremely easy to install and do not require complex fasteners. At the same time, the process of laying the roof does not require large labor costs. When installing tiles of a longer length, certain difficulties may arise.

Effective Width- the size of the tiles, taking into account the overlap of the adjacent sheet for efficient and reliable laying.

Laying in an overlap is necessary in order to exclude the possible ingress of sewage under the roof. Sheets are laid on top of each other both in the longitudinal and transverse directions:

 • overlap in width averages 70 +/- 10 mm;
 • overlap in length is 110 +/- 10 mm.

The effective width and length are the difference between the nominal size and the overlap allowances on each side.

The calculation of the number of sheets of metal tiles is carried out precisely according to the effective dimensions of the sheet. When buying, pay attention to the label. Large manufacturers indicate both sizes on the packages.

Method for calculating metal tiles on a gable roof

Stage number 1 - Roof measurements

Before starting the calculation of the number of sheets required, the roof should be measured:

 • measure the width of the slope horizontally (along the ridge or cornice);
 • measure the length of the slope (from the ridge to the eaves).

To the result obtained, the length of the slope should be added 70 mm for the departure from the end of the rafter leg. The overhang is done in order to prevent drops from falling under the roof sheets during oblique rain.

Stage 2 - Calculation of the number of horizontal rows

To determine the number of rows of tiles, you should use the resulting size according to the width of the slope (length along the ridge). It must be divided by the value of the effective sheet width.

Example: The measured width of the slope is 8 meters. To calculate the number of rows on one slope, the width of the slope should be divided by the effective width of the sheet, which is 1.10 m.

N = 8 m / 1.10 m = 7.27 ≈ 8 rows

Important: Rounding should always be done towards the higher value.

Stage number 3 - Calculation of the number of sheets in one row

The calculation of the metal tile here is carried out along the length of the slope. To determine the exact number of sheets in a row, the length of the slope, vertical overlap and overhang should be summed. From the amount received, you should choose the number of sheets, starting from their longitudinal size.

Example: The measured length of the slope is 4 meters. Sheets of metal tiles with a length of 2.25 m were chosen as the roof. When laying, an overlap between sheets of 0.15 m will be used. As can be seen from the length of the slope, two sheets will be sufficient in one row (2.25 x 2 ˃ 4 meters).

To confirm the correct choice, the following check should be made:

 • add up the length of the slope, vertical overlap and reach beyond the rafter end: 4 m + 0.15 m + 0.07 m = 4.22 m;
 • add the nominal length of two sheets: 2 x 2.25 = 4.5 m;
 • compare the obtained values: 4.22 m ≤ 4.5.

If the sum of the nominal length of the sheets exceeds the length of the slope, taking into account all overlaps, then the number is chosen correctly.

Step #4 – Final Count

By counting the number of rows and the exact number of sheets in each of them, you can make the final results by multiplying these two values. According to the examples above, one slope will require 8 rows of two sheets each.

Therefore, the total number per slope will be - 2 x 8 = 16 sheets. If the roof has two symmetrical slopes, then the final value will be - 16 x 2 = 32 pieces.

Calculation of additional elements and fasteners

Self-tapping screws 4.8 x 32 (29) are used to fasten metal tiles. They are sold in packs of 250 pcs. For 1 sq. m. roofing requires 7 pieces.

According to the examples, the roof area was 2x (8 m x 4 m) = 64 m. Then it will require 64 x 7 = 448 self-tapping screws. From this it is worth concluding that two packages will be enough.

Additional elements include:

 • skating bars;
 • cornice strips;
 • wind bars.

Each of the planks is available in a length of 2 m. During installation, the overlap is 0.10 m. The calculation is made by dividing the length of the ridge by the length of the plank, taking into account the overlap.

When installing and fastening the strips, self-tapping screws 4.8 x 70 mm are used. In stores, they are sold in packs of 100 pieces. For every meter of length of one plank, there are 6 screws.

Metal tile has become a popular covering material today due to its average cost and good performance. Such as strength, aesthetic appearance, resistance to mechanical stress and negative atmospheric manifestations. Durability, reliability and versatility - it is used to cover roofs of any complexity. But before purchasing this roofing material and starting installation, it is necessary to calculate the required amount of metal tiles, taking into account the features and configuration of the roof.

How to calculate the number of sheets of metal tiles per roof

Making the calculation is easy. To do this, you will need a tape measure and a calculator or an online program that will calculate the required number of sheets (or square meters) based on the data obtained during the measurement. When choosing one or another type of metal tile, you need to take into account:

 • roof area;
 • the shape of the metal tile;
 • footage of overlapping metal sheets.

Those who do not want to do calculations, but are ready to spend more money, can do it easier - add 10% to the roof area and divide the resulting value by the area of one sheet. But this approach is justified only when covering small and simple roofs. Otherwise, it is better to devote a few hours to calculations than to incur unjustified and, besides, considerable costs. Or use building calculators.

The area of all roof elements should be calculated according to the finished carrier system. Even with strict adherence to design values, deviations are possible during the construction of rafters.

Calculation of material for a shed roof with metal tiles

The construction of a shed roof is the simplest and easiest compared to other types of roofs. But the result is a reliable durable construction, on which any covering material can be laid.

A house with a shed roof made of metal tiles looks original

To calculate the metal tile, take the following data as an example:

We do the calculation:

 1. We calculate the number of metal tile sheets according to the width of the slope. To do this, we divide the width of the slope by the useful width of the sheet: 6 / 1.1 = 5.45 ≈ 6 sheets.
 2. We calculate the number of rows along the length of the slopes: 5.2 m + 0.07 m + 0.3 m + 0.15 m (overlap) = 5.72 m. Based on this, we see that it is more rational to use metal sheets with a length of 2.9 m, laid in 2 rows. Since 2.9 m * 2 = 5.8 m> 5.72 m, it means that the length of the sheets is chosen correctly.
 3. As a result, 12 = (6 * 2) sheets of 2.9 m each will go to cover the roof. You can, of course, replace them with six sheets 6.1 m long, but it is more difficult to transport such sheets, and there will be more waste.

In addition, you will need to purchase:

When calculating a roof or covering material, all roundings are done towards a larger number.

Calculation of metal tiles for a gable roof

The roof structure with a slope of 12–15° is considered optimal for laying metal tiles. If the steepness of the slopes is less, then reinforced waterproofing will have to be laid. With a larger angle of inclination, the step decreases and the number of fasteners increases. That is, in one and in the other case, the cost of covering the roof with metal tiles will increase.

Covering material of a noble cherry color adorns a strict, uncomplicated design

With an asymmetric roof structure, each slope is calculated separately, and the results are summarized.

We leave the original data the same. We take into account that our roof has a dormer window on one slope with dimensions:

The calculation process looks like this:

 1. We calculate the number of sheets of metal tiles per element No. 1 - a whole slope. To do this, the slope area S = (5.23 + 0.07) * 6 = 31.8 m² is divided by the useful area of 1 sheet of metal tiles 2.9 m long: 31.8 m² / ((2.9 - 0.15) * 1.1)) = 10.5 pcs.
 2. Since our slopes are the same, it means that 10.5 sheets of metal tiles will go to the second slope.
 3. Total for both slopes you need: 10.5 * 2 = 21 sheets 2.9 meters long.
 4. We determine the number of sheets for facing the dormer window. Here you can use sheets with a length of 2.25 m, which are cheaper.
 5. The area of the slopes of the dormer window is: 2.5 (base) * 1.4 (height) = 3.5. Because we have two sides, multiply by 2 = 7 m².
 6. Useful area of 1 sheet 2.25 m long: (2.25 - 0.15) * 1.1 = 2.31 m².
 7. We calculate the number of sheets: 7 / 2.31 = 3.03 ≈ 3 sheets.
 8. To summarize - in total, to cover a gable roof with one dormer window, you will need: 21 sheets of metal tiles 2.9 m long and 3 sheets 2.25 m long.

Additional elements and fasteners for the installation of gable roof metal tiles:

 • skate 8 m (6 + 2) or 5 pcs.;
 • cornice plank 12 m + 1 m (dormer window) or 7 pcs.;
 • end plate 20.92 m or 11 pcs.;
 • upper valleys 5 m or 3 pcs.;
 • bottom valleys 5 m or 3 pcs.;
 • colored self-tapping screws 4.8*35 two packs of 250 pcs. for fastening sheets;
 • colored self-tapping screws 4.8 * 50 150 pieces (1 pack) for fastening ridge and cornice elements.

Calculation of metal tiles on a hip roof

A hip roof is a type of four-pitched roof, consisting of two triangular slopes and two slopes in the form of a trapezoid. T which design involves the presence of a complex truss system. Nevertheless, it is very popular due to its main advantages:

Since the height of the roof in our example is 4.5 m, respectively, the length of the slopes, taking into account the slope, is 5.23 m. Knowing these values, we can calculate the length of the ridge ridge using geometric formulas. In our example, the ridge is 0.8 m.

To calculate a metal tile for a hip structure, a scheme is required

In addition to the sheets of metal tiles, you will need:

The total footage of all additional elements is calculated by adding all the lengths, taking into account the overlaps.

Varieties of hip design

Varieties of hip construction are no less popular with private developers. In particular, the Dutch type of roof (half hip). Calculate the amount of metal tiles to cover a half-hip roof similarly to a full hip roof. The difference is only two triangular slopes, the area of which will be smaller, which means that less covering material will be required.

Convenient roof configuration allows you to make a spacious and bright attic

Let's say the length of the half-hip slopes is ⅓ less than the side slopes. We will not complicate the calculation and calculate separately the area of triangular slopes according to geometric functions. Just divide their total area by 3 and get the value for half hips: 22.5 m² / 3 = 7.5 m² with a side slope length of 1.74 m (5.23 / 3). Based on the calculations, we see that metal-tile sheets of shorter length are suitable for covering two half-hips. This, of course, will reduce the cost of purchasing covering material.

So, to cover the half-hip structure, you need to purchase:

 • for finishing trapezoidal slopes with an area of 30.6 m² - 10 sheets of metal tiles 2.9 m long;
 • and to cover two half-hips - 3.24 = (7.5 / 2.31) ≈ 4 sheets 2.25 m long. Accordingly, additional elements are recalculated - they reduce the footage of ridge and eaves, but add end strips.

Hip roof

The tent structure is very suitable for square buildings, for rectangular buildings with a slight difference between length and width, and for round ones. In the first case, these will be four completely identical triangular slopes. In the second - the same two pairs of triangular slopes with small deviations in area. And in the third - triangular slopes of the same area, the number of which is determined by the parameters of the building. A feature of the tent structure is the absence of a ridge.

Hip roof ideal for square buildings

Let's calculate the amount of Monterrey metal tile for such a roof configuration, since it is also in great demand in suburban housing construction.

The initial data is the same that we asked at the very beginning. For a house measuring 5x6 m, to cover a hipped roof with a metal tile, you will need:

 1. To cover the first pair of slopes (along the length of the building) - the area of these two triangular slopes is 27 m² = (6 / 2 * 4.5 * 2). 8.9 ≈ 9 sheets of metal tiles 2.9 m long will go to their flooring.
 2. To cover the second pair of slopes - along the width of the building - we calculate in the same way: (5 / 2 * 4.5 * 2) / 3.03 (useful area of one sheet 2.9 m long) = 7.4 ≈ 8 sheets.
 3. Let's calculate the cornice strips: 5 * 2 + 6 * 2 = 22 m or 11.5 ≈ 12 pieces.
 4. We determine the ridge elements for facing the ribs: 5.23 * 4 = 20.92 ≈ 21 m or 11–12 pieces.
 5. Fasteners at the rate of 7 self-tapping screws per 1 m²: 49.5 * 7 = 350 pieces or 2 packs and 1 pack for fixing ridge and cornice elements, which are fixed in 12–13 cm increments.

Broken hip (semi-hip) roof

Broken hip or semi-hip structures are less common due to the complexity of their arrangement. Although they look simply bewitching - you won’t look away for a long time, especially when the color scheme for the facade and roofing is skillfully selected.

Broken mansard semi-hinged roof gives the residential building amazing beauty

For further calculation of the covering material, the complex roof structure is divided into simple geometric shapes.

The results obtained are then summarized. In order not to get confused in the calculations, it is better to resort to an online calculator on the website of the seller of the selected roofing, or use special programs for calculating the roof.

When calculating the slopes of complex structures, it is not necessary to subtract the area of bay windows, ledges, skylights, etc. from the result. This will be a margin that is not taken into account when calculating the roofing material.

Calculation of roofing material using an online calculator

 1. We choose the shape of the roof - a broken attic gable.
 2. We enter the dimensions on request, focusing on our initial data - the length of the ridge (we have 6 m), the length of the side slope to the break line is 3.49 m (let's say that on one slope the break line runs at a distance of ⅔ from the ridge). The length of the side slope after the break, respectively, is 5.23 - 3.49 = 1.74 m. In the same way, we enter data on the second slope - here, for example, we will make a break ⅓ from the ridge, that is, asymmetry. Then the length before the break will be 1.74 m, and after 3.49 m.
 3. We choose the material - we chose a metal tile coated with MPE 0.5 matte polyester.
 4. We click on the result and we see the calculation of not only the amount of material needed, but immediately the cost. So, according to our entered data, it will take 48 m² of metal tiles, 6 m of ridge, 12 m of eaves and 16 m of end strips. Self-tapping screws 48*35 250 pieces (2 packs) and 48*50 100 pieces (1 pack). In monetary terms, today, laying roofing from MPE 0.5 matte polyester metal tiles on a broken mansard roof will cost 22,760 rubles.

The calculation took just minutes. So the help of these programs is quite tangible. For greater certainty, you can make several identical calculations on different sites. They must match. In case of a small error, choose a larger result. Not by amount, of course, but by footage, since prices vary depending on the seller and supplier of roofing materials.

Calculation of roofing material using special programs

In addition to the online calculator, you can use more serious programs written to calculate the roof as a whole - the carrier (truss) system and the enclosing (roofing pie). This is the Roofing Profi known to builders, the SketchUp, Zhitov Calc program, which allows you to carry out calculations from an Android smartphone, etc.

Video: how to make a roof in Sketchup

Noteworthy is the ArchiCad program, with which you can model and calculate the house completely. Starting with the terrain and ending with the roofing - the "Roof" section in ArchiCad.

Of course, you need to have computer knowledge at the level of a confident Internet user and building basics. And then it will not be difficult to master any construction program. And the benefits will be great. Especially for those who are already building a house with their own hands, or are just thinking about their own suburban housing.

Norm of material for a roof from a metal tile

The use of metal tiles for roofing is a profitable solution if all measurements and calculations are made correctly. In addition, the roofs of the houses are very attractive. With the help of such material, it is possible to smooth out the defects of the facade, or, on the contrary, to emphasize its advantages. Multi-colored sheets of metal tiles on one roof will make it elegant, colorful, and eye-catching.

On the same roof, you can use metal tiles of different shades

Dark tones in combination with a light facade will look impressive.

The dark colors of the metal tiles are in perfect harmony with the light facades.

Neutral tones, more calm, will give the house an impressive and quality factor. That is, the metal tile gives room for any imagination.

The calm gray color of the metal tile on the roof of the house gives the entire structure a refined, austere and rich look.

And in order for a roof made of metal tiles to please for many years, you need to follow some standards, rules for laying and operating:

The installation of a roof under a metal tile is regulated by the methodological documentation prescribed in MDS 12–47 of 2008 “Arrangement of a roof from a metal tile. Project of work production".
