The image of the Mother of God is an indestructible wall of meaning. The legend of the land of Kyiv about the miraculous protector. The meaning and what helps the icon "Indestructible Wall"

According to legend, the icon of the Mother of God, called the "Indestructible Wall", became famous for the vision of the elder Gabriel of the Savior-Eleazar desert. He saw in front of him on a hill a wonderful city, where he had to go, a wide, gentle road led to the city, along which it was very easy to go. Many people went up this road, not noticing that a huge, terrible giant hung over them, throwing a net over those who were walking and seizing it for himself. The elder thought about how he could get into the Great City and not fall into the giant's net. Suddenly, from the side, he noticed an inconspicuous, steeper path, rising along a sky-high wall to the city. Rare travelers walked along this path, the giant tried to throw a net over them, but it hit the wall and returned to him empty. Then the words from the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos surfaced in the elder’s head: “Rejoice, Indestructible Wall of the Kingdom ...”, realizing whose strength protects travelers on this path, the elder turned onto this path. The net with a whistle flew over his head, but never even hit him, thrown back by the wall erected by the Mother of God. He reached the city, and there… beauty, light, flowers, fragrance, all in reverence and joy… Thus he reached the very Throne of the Great King…

The miraculous icon of the Most Holy Mother of God "The Indestructible Wall" is made in the style of a mosaic on the wall above the high place of the main altar of the Kyiv St. Sophia Cathedral. The Mother of God is depicted against a golden background, standing to her full height on a quadrangular golden stone with raised hands.

The icon got its name "Indestructible Wall" due to the fact that for nine centuries it remained intact, despite the fact that both the cathedral and the city were repeatedly destroyed. An old description of this icon has been preserved: “ The growth of the Mother of God is gigantic, like all Her works in Russia. She stands on a golden stone, the unshakable foundation of all who flow to her protection. Her tunic is of heavenly color, a scarlet belt and a lention hangs on it, with which She wipes away so many tears. Azure handrails on hands raised to the sky. A golden veil descends from Her head and is hung in the form of an omophorion on left shoulder, to the sign of Her cover, the broadest cloud, according to the voice of church songs. A bright star burns on the forehead of the Mother of God and two stars on the shoulders: for She herself, the Mother of the Unsetting Light, was for us the dawn of the Unsetting Sun».

According to Kievan tradition, the capital city will not perish as long as the hands of the Mother of God “Indestructible Wall” extend over it.

The irresistible Intercessor of the Russian land and in the most difficult times gave her gracious help. On a large arc of the semi-arch, in its entire length and almost in its entire width, a Greek inscription is depicted in black mosaic. This inscription is translated as follows: “God is in the midst of her and will not move: God will help her in the morning in the morning” (Ps. 45, v. 6).

The icon of Our Lady Blachernitissa, placed on the altar wall of the Blachernae Church in Constantinople, became the initial image for the creation of this image.

Our Lady of Blachernitissa

From the Kyiv image, a half-length list of the icon "Indestructible Wall" was made, which was unknown for a long time. The icon was reopened only in the 60s of the XX century, when it was transferred to the church of the village of Nikolskoye of the Astrakhan region from the neighboring, ruined by the Bolsheviks during the revolution, the Resurrection-Mironositsky monastery of the village of Zlatozubovka. On it are the marks of dashing years, traces of vandalism: damaged painting, brushed off gilding. The image hung in the temple, among many other icons, for more than 30 years. In 2001, a 95-year-old resident of the village of Solenoye Zaimishche, devout Agrippina Yakovlevna Veremeeva, thin sleep The Blessed Lady appeared and, comforting from impending blindness, ordered to pray to Her miraculous image “Indestructible Wall”, which is in Nikolskoye. On the day of the celebration of the feast of the Entrance into the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos, they searched for the icon and found it on the wall in an inconspicuous corner of the church. They began to clean it, it was covered with drying oil. The icon was painted on gold. They took off the drying oil, gave it to be restored. opened reverse side icons - it indicates that it was written for the monastery.

As a result of archival searches, it was possible to find out the origin of the image and possible cause its miraculous power: in 1906, when the Holy Righteous John of Kronstadt came to the monastery, he illuminated the iconostasis of the monastery, and in the photograph they recognized this icon - the “Indestructible Wall” on the iconostasis of the chapel dedicated to the heavenly patron of St. John of Kronstadt, the Monk John of Rylsky. The icon stood in the first row of the iconostasis. All-Russian prayer book Father John personally consecrated it. Perhaps this is the reason for its miraculous power. Subsequently, the temple of the monastery was destroyed, the icons were burned or chopped. The icon "Indestructible Wall" was saved from desecration by the pious parishioner Maria Anshakova and prayed before it in her house for many years, and then brought it as a gift to the church in Nikolsky, the only one preserved at that time in the entire district ...

It was as if her second birth took place and veneration among the parishioners began. After the prayers, several obvious miracles happened. Twice there was a cure for cancer, as well as help was sent for a surgical operation. The parents found a son who had disappeared 11 years before; the killer of a local girl, who came with a confession, was discovered; reconciled spouses who were on the verge of divorce. Orthodox people from the surrounding area and other places reached out to the icon. With the care of blessed pilgrims, the icon was decorated with a skillful crown, the inextinguishable lampada was lit, from which oil is now distributed to those who pray.

According to eyewitnesses, it is known that during the years of the Great Patriotic War, on the fields of fierce battles, in the hottest points of the battle, they saw a woman who stood facing the enemy units, with her hands raised to the sky. One of these testimonies is described in detail in the story of the Orthodox writer Archpriest Nikolai Agafonov "The Unbreakable Wall". It tells about the miracle of the amazing rescue of a front-line soldier and his friend on Kursk Bulge, in one of the most difficult battles during the years of the Great Patriotic War. When the front-line soldier went to the temple to put a funeral candle to commemorate his comrade-in-arms, he recognized in the icon “Indestructible Wall” the very woman whom he saw then, in that memorable battle. It was herself Holy Mother of God.

There are few lists of the icon "Indestructible Wall" from the Kyiv image. They are available in two or three churches in Moscow. One of them was made in the 19th century and brought from the Kiev Sophia Cathedral to Russia, in Church of the Supreme Apostles Peter and Paul in Lefortovo.

Icon "Indestructible Wall" the prototype of the Most Holy Theotokos of Constantinople, called Oranta or Oranta-defender. This image has adorned for centuries one of the famous Kyiv cathedrals - St. Sophia of Kyiv, and remains there in its original form.

"Indestructible Wall" - the protector of all those who ask

Image Holy Mother of God in St. Sophia Cathedral truly fascinates with its grandeur and beauty. In the vault of the altar, the icon is laid out in a mosaic style. The size of the image is 5 and a half meters. The Queen of Heaven is depicted in full growth with her hands raised in prayer. Against a golden background, in a blue robe, the look is calm and an illusion is created, wherever the parishioner steps, the Mother of God is watching him with a gaze.

For more than X centuries, the ancient image has adorned the cathedral, and not wars, Christian persecutions, and even time itself is not subject to the image of the Mother of God.

The origin of the icon and its name

The name of the ancient icon originates from Akathist 12 Ikos . "Unbreakable Wall" the akathist sounds like this: “Chosen from all generations of the Mother of God and the Queen, before Her most pure image, the Indestructible Wall called ... let us call Ty: Rejoice, Mother of God, Indestructible Wall, Our Intercessor and consolation.” Here the Mother of God is compared with an indestructible wall, because she is the protector and constant patroness of all those in need. Over time, this saying took on a literal meaning.

There is also a legend associated with the akathist "Indestructible Wall". Once Elder Gabriel had a vision of a wondrous city standing on a mountain. And the elder set out on his journey to this city. He walked along a wide road, along with other travelers. But suddenly a giant appeared above the walking travelers, who began to catch people walking near the old man with nets. The elder understood that the people do not see this terrible giant.

Monk Gabriel saw a small path, which led off the main road, and followed further along it. The path went under a sheer cliff that looked like a solid wall. The giant also tried to catch the walking people there, but the net hit the rock-wall, making it impossible to catch people. Then the elder remembered the lines from the akathist and realized under whose protection he was.

But the icon "Indestructible Wall" is not the first image. The prototype of this icon is the Blachernae Icon of the Mother of God (Oranta), which is located in Constantinople on the wall of the Blachernae Church. One of the copies of the ancient icon was brought to the territory Kievan Rus, from where the ancient icon painters received permission to create lists.
