12 men's and 12 women's teams will take part in the field hockey tournament. The qualification for the Summer Olympic Games ended at the end of 2015. Russia did not qualify for either the men's or women's tournament.

Line-up: Maximum 18 people. 11 players take part in the game. The match consists of two periods of 35 minutes each. The team with the most goals is the winner of the match. If no goals have been scored, or both teams have scored the same number of goals, the score in the match is considered a draw.
Penalty corner kick: For violations of the rules by the defenders in the kick circle, a penalty corner kick is awarded.
Free throw: For gross violations of the rules by defenders in the hitting circle, a free throw is assigned. It is performed from a mark of 6m 40 cm from the goal line.
