Sony Xperia Z1 Compact - a worthy little brother or an attempt to earn some more money?

The Sony Xperia Z1 smartphone with the Compact prefix was released almost immediately after the release of the main model. It was like a simplified version of Zeta, which cost less.

Many specialists already then, in 2014, had a suspicion that this was just such a marketing ploy and a desperate way to earn even a little more.

Indeed, many of the characteristics of the Compact and non-Compact are the same. The only difference is in size and some other not very noticeable features.

One way or another, we will consider this mobile phone in the context of the main device. you can read a review on it.

As we found out, it is worth buying it even in 2018, since the device has really good functionality and pleasant performance.

As you can see, this smartphone also has a smaller battery capacity (the main one had 3000 mAh). However, the screen diagonal is also smaller, so you don't need much energy for work.

On the other hand, in our review of the main model, we said that the battery is average - we would like more.

Perhaps the developers could have left the same capacity, and we would have received a usable battery. Here we already see the first puncture of the Compact developers.

Quite possibly there will be a lot of them. and we will really understand that this is just an attempt to make more money from Sony specialists. Or maybe it isn't. Well, let's get started!

Unpacking and packaging

Let's say right away that the developers are great here.

In the box, besides the phone itself, we have the following:

The last point is especially interesting to us. In the review on Zet1, we said that there are no headphones in the kit, and because of this, the buyer will have to go to the store and buy them additionally.

That is why the machine was so cheap. Here everything is not so, and the headset is there, and quite good enough.

Her nozzles are gel, vacuum... The sound is clean and beautiful enough (even considering that we are considering them in comparison with other models of 2018).

There is a switch on the headphones... You can, without taking your phone out of your pocket, turn on the next track or decrease / increase the volume. Also included is a set of ear pads, and even a clothespin. As for the ear pads, it is very cool to have them in the kit, because such small elements are always lost somewhere. A clothespin is also very cool. You can attach the wire to your clothes and not be afraid that it will go somewhere, not put it under your clothes, and so on.

In general, the developers deserve the highest praise for the delivery set of the gadget in question!

Design and build

The appearance of the Compact is practically no different from the standard.

The same shovel, which in 2018 will look very unusual and old-fashioned.

Although it's only been 4 years since this phone hit the market.

And yet there are some points worth paying attention to.

They can even induce someone to make their choice not in favor of Chinese smartphones, but the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. Here they are:

  • Stylish metal side frame. It is made entirely of aluminum, which has been anodized. This makes the sidewall extremely durable and elegant at the same time. She is not afraid of any scratches, chips and abrasions.
  • Front and rear impact-resistant glass covered with films. Standard Zet1 also has tapes, but they are very susceptible to damage. Several walks with such a device in your pocket and it has already lost its appearance. A week after the purchase, the smartphone will look as if it is already 10 years old. But in the Compact there is no such thing. It is not known what this is related to. Perhaps they took the tapes a little better.

  • There is no plastic at all in the case, only glass and metal... In addition, the protection level is IP55 and IP58. This means that moisture and dust of this model is not terrible. In addition, the device can be immersed in water to a depth of 1.5 meters for half an hour and nothing will happen to it. You can put it under the tap completely calmly. You can also take pictures and generally use this device in the pool or in the bathroom. This is true for the main Z1 as well.

  • All slots are securely closed with special plugs. They just do not allow water, dust and other elements to pass through. This approach is much more reliable than the back cover, which hides all the slots or connectors that need to be removed with a paper clip. At the first approach, the lid may break and, accordingly, everything that is behind it will be damaged. And with the second, you will have to deal with constantly stuck connectors and breaking paper clips.

  • The speaker is not at the front or back, but at the bottom. This is great, because if the phone is lying on a table or other flat surface, the sound will not be muffled. The speaker grill also looks pretty good.

Otherwise, everything is the same as in the usual Zeta one.

All elements are located in the same place and have the same features.

Screen

The Compact's screen is several times better than that of the main model. It is richer, more vibrant, natural and interesting.

But most importantly, the viewing angles are suitable here. According to this criterion, the Z1 lags far behind the Compact. Even figure 6 shows it very well.

The "small" display looks much richer. The “senior” is somehow too dull and generally not worthy of any attention.

Here, too, a TFT is used with a strange Triluminos prefix, which is close in characteristics to.

In some reviews it is written that this is IPS, but this is a mistake... Although, if you do not know and just look at any phone with IPS and TFT Triluminos, but only in the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, you will never understand that they have different types of displays.

Diagonal - 4.3 inches, resolution - 1280x720 pixels. Perhaps it was the reduction in size, but not the weakening of the hardware platform itself, which ensures the operation of the screen, that was the reason for the increase in picture quality.

Considering this display in the context of other phones from 2013-2014, it looks pretty good.

Of course, he is still a long way from Samsung with theirs, but with HTC he may well compete. In Figure 7 you can see the comparison.

As for the rest, we can say the same about the screen of this phone as about the screen of the “big brother”. Not bad!

Performance

But the Compact has problems with performance. In he managed to work out on only 33468.

Although the processor is the same as in the regular Z1 - Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 with the same 4 Krait 400 cores at 2.2 GHz.

The graphics processor is the same Adreno 330 and the same RAM - 2 GB.

Dear experts, attention, question... How did the developers manage to reduce performance by ¼ using the same hardware?

To be honest, this is a big mystery. There are not even any options that could understand what is the matter here. We managed to find the test result in Antutu for 2014. There the result is not much higher - 34871. Here are the results of evaluation in other benchmarks.

Table 2. Test results in benchmarks
Benchmark Result
Geekbench 3 Single-Core Score922
Geekbench 3 Multi-Core Score2885
Mobile Xprt210/98
Ice storm score19292
Epic Citadel, High Performance58 fps
SunSpider 1.0914.2 ms
Kraken7947.3 ms

The attentive reader will notice that the main Zet1 has test results in the benchmarks shown in Table 2 below.

And, again, how could this have happened? In the main benchmark, the result is lower, while in the rest it is higher.

It's hard to even say whether the Compact's performance has become lower or higher in comparison with the standard.

But if we abstract from this, the performance seems to be quite normal for 2013. Today this, of course, will not be enough.

In this case, the games work fine. Level graphics. In support of this, we give a game test.

Memory

The main memory here is exactly the same as that of the regular sample. 16 GB according to specifications and 11 GB real.

Everything else is occupied by system data and. To this you can add 64 GB - the maximum capacity of a memory card, which is an example of a phone.

It is clear that in 2018 this is not enough and I would like to see a little more memory in the smartphone. As in the regular Z1, the memory is average. In principle, 75 GB is a lot, but some programs need more.

Battery

As mentioned above, the battery here is weaker than the standard. But in some incomprehensible way, the running time has become much longer.

The test results are shown in Table 3.

Table 3. Operating time in different modes
Task Sony Xperia Z1 battery life Time workSony Xperia Z1 Compact
Reading11.7 hours25 hours
Watching a video8 ocloc'k11.1 hours
Games4.5 hours5.5 hours

Do you feel the difference? When reading, the autonomy is generally more than doubled.

Still, a smaller screen greatly affects this characteristic.

It is interesting, however, that some other phones with the same battery capacity perform worse. In general, Zet1 Compact can be considered the market leader among phones with a 2300 mAh battery, if we rely on autonomy. Table 4 shows the test results compared to other smartphones.

Table 4. Comparison of operating time with other phones with a 2300 mAh battery

Watching a video11.1 hours8 ocloc'k8 ocloc'k5.1 hours
Games5.5 hours3.8 hours3.7 hours3.8 hours

By the way, the battery is even 2400 mAh.

As you can see, other phones with the same battery capacity do not come close to the result of our Sony. The Nexus 5 performs very well in reading, but performs poorly when watching videos and playing games. So in terms of autonomy, the device we are considering is an excellent choice.

Camera

The camera is also the same as in the main unit. All the same. And, attention, the pictures are not like that.

Again, how so? In Compact, they are less light, natural and saturated.

They are also a little duller and even yellowish. Here is a comparison of the photos.

And here is a comparison of the same area... As you can see, the photo of the Compact is also dimmer. Of course, it can be fairly noted that the photographs were taken at different times of the year and such a comparison is biased. Maybe so. Then another problem is visible. If you enlarge the photo, it becomes clear that the device we are considering has problems with detail. When zoomed in, everything becomes blurred, and more than that of a standard camera.

The same can be seen in other photographs.

The front camera is also slightly worse, although you shouldn't expect much from 2 MP. The same can be said for the video.

If, again, to abstract from the comparison with the "older brother", then it seems that we have a very good camera (main).

Her enlargement suffers, but if you do not use it, the photos and videos seem very high quality.

Here are some more sample photos.

And here is a sample video. It clearly shows poor zoom performance.

  • flashing when shooting at a certain time when using the flash;
  • the camera stops working altogether after a while or works every other time;
  • the camera button also ceases to function over time.

Although the latter is more of a design and build claim, but still.

As for the first problem, this is due to the smaller size of the flash.

Why, I wonder, did the developers decide to add a smaller flash here? The body is smaller, but it would still fit a normal flash.

protection from water and moisture - the device can be used in the bathroom or in the pool;

As you can see, people are not so happy with this model.

Most of the reviews are positive and related to the screen, battery and high speed.

The latter may have been such in 2014, but now there are faster phones.

conclusions

In many ways, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is a smaller copy of the Z1. What were you waiting for? The miracle did not happen.

There are practically the same disadvantages as the "older brother", with the exception of those related to the configuration and the body.

In the review, we encountered a lot of riddles.

For example, how, using the same processor, did the developers manage to reduce the performance (if measured in Antutu)?

Or how, using the same camera, did they manage to reduce the quality of the images?

Considering the main device, we said that you can buy it for the sake of performance. Here it is not, so there is no point in buying Zeta Compact either.

The result of the review is as follows:

  • Screen: 8
  • Convenience of the interface: 10
  • Battery: 9
  • Case reliability: 10
  • Performance: 6
  • Evaluation result : 8.6

The Z1 Compact is a small smartphone. It is so small that it is even somehow unusual to hold it in your hand. Still, the constant editorial activity pushes its own boundaries of acceptance and devices such as the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 are perceived more than normal. And here you are, please, no compromises in terms of iron and at the same time compact dimensions.

Communicating with different people, I made the discovery that many are actively asking and interested in this particular smartphone. They are not interested in Z1, Z2 and even more so Z Ultra. However, Compact is suspiciously consistently in demand. The reasons for this attention lie, in my opinion, in several key features of the smartphone from Sony.

Let's start with the main distinguishing feature - design.

In recent years, Sony has decided on the look for its products and stubbornly continues to produce very similar devices in terms of appearance. The Z1 Compact is no exception. It has a metal frame around the entire perimeter and glass front and back. Obviously, due to the use of just such materials, the weight of the smartphone (137 g) does not correspond to its size. The Compact pulls off the hand despite the fact that you expect less weight from such a modest size. This is an exclusively psychological moment, so 137 grams for any phone has long been the norm.

Since we are talking about the dimensions of the device, I will give for comparison a table of mass-dimensional characteristics:

Length Width Thickness The weight

Sony Xperia Z1

Samsung Galaxy S4 mini

The body of the device is waterproof and dustproof. The phone is able to spend 30 minutes under water at a depth of 1.5 meters - IP58 standard. The color of the side frame has a pleasant metallic shade, but in general there are alternative colors on sale: white, black, pink and light green.

On the upper edge of the device there is a 3.5 mm audio jack. The bottom plane is entirely occupied by the main speaker grid, under which the microphone is also hidden. The right corner has a hole for a strap - Sony stubbornly continues the tradition of carrying phones on a strap.

The right side of the smartphone relative to the screen contains the already familiar power button and a small rocker to adjust the volume. There is also a camera button, which has a two-step stroke: for focusing and releasing the shutter. By the way, due to this key, you can quickly activate the camera, but by default there will always be a fully automatic mode. Only the call of the photo application from the menu or from the desktop goes to the last exposed shooting scenario.

The left side of the device is also rich in various elements. First of all, there is a magnetic connector for connecting to a docking station, which of course is sold separately. Don't get your hopes up! Both to the left and to the right of this port are plugs that hide the microUSB slot, a slot for memory cards and separately for a SIM card.

Simka, as is customary in all the latest smartphones from Sony, first fits into a very flimsy substrate, which then needs to be sent to the appropriate hole. I will say right away that it is inconvenient to poke the SIM card every time in this way: you need to have nails of a certain length and some skill so as not to break or lose this special tongue.

There are a couple more secrets in the same gap. Firstly, there is a barely noticeable red Reset button here. Secondly, if you look closely, you can see a paper tail, pulling on which, you can find all the necessary information about the device: IMEI, model, QR code, etc. These are the tricks that the Z1 Compact can please its owner with. I wonder if sellers from federal chains know about them? From time to time, consumers fall on their heads, to whom take out and put all the information about the product before buying.

The device tirelessly warns that after each operation with any of the valves on the body, they must be tightly closed to prevent moisture from entering. It is really not worth brushing off these notifications, since the stubs are sometimes not adjoining to the end.

The front of the Compact is covered with tempered glass with an oleophobic coating. More precisely, the special film is coated, not the glass itself.

The film is very quickly covered with various scratches, so it makes sense to glue additional protection on top.

The end result is a kind of sandwich. On the back, there is no film, but the surface is covered with scratches no less quickly.

Above the screen in the upper left corner there are two sensors that track the approach to a surface and ambient light. The front camera is located symmetrically to them. And in the middle there is a grid for the earpiece, under which the LED is also hidden, which is responsible for various system notifications.

On the back there are Sony and XPERIA markings, an NFC badge indicating the location of the sensor. In the upper part there is a peephole of the main camera, the glass of which is somewhat recessed into the body to protect it from scratches. Nearby is a pulsed LED flash and a hole for a second microphone.

The Z1 Compact case is rich in various elements, but everything is designed in the corporate style and looks very cool!

Since all connectors have their own caps, then you probably guessed that the battery is non-removable. Perhaps that is why the assembly of the device is made at 5 plus.

Everything fits perfectly, does not creak and, together with the materials used, gives the impression of an expensive and very high quality item. In principle, this is how it really is.

Display

The screen of the smartphone is built on the basis of an IPS-matrix and has a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. Despite the modest resolution by today's standards, the display is organically integrated into the device. 4.3 inches, believe me, is not much, so simple HD resolution is more than enough here. Judge for yourself, the density here is 341 dots per square inch, which is already behind the eyes, unless, of course, peering at the fonts at a distance of 5-10 cm from the display.

The screen is bright, beautiful, built using TRILUMINOS technology and does not raise any questions. The display remains readable in the sun. I propose to compare our smartphone with the iPhone 5 (pictured below), which were shot in the dark and from different angles.

You can work with the screen even with gloves. To do this, you must activate the corresponding setting in the menu, after which any touch on the display is accompanied by a purple circle (see screenshot).

In the settings, you can activate the proprietary image enhancer X-Reality for Mobile, the work of which is noticeable only when watching a video. In my opinion, this setting should be turned off once and for all, since it noticeably spoils the picture, namely, makes it too contrasting.

The next key component of a smartphone is its characteristics. With the exception of the display, they are all top-end in nature, which determines the location of the smartphone at the top, so to speak, of the food chain.

The performance of the device is at the level of modern flagships. The AnTuTu test scored 34,350 points, which is in line with the most modern devices from Sony, Samsung, etc.

Still, we are once again convinced that the Compact prefix here only denotes more modest dimensions compared to top-end solutions. The Z1 Compact is just a small flagship, and not another device, as is the case with other manufacturers. The same Samsung Galaxy S4 or LG G2 mini are phones that are completely different from their older counterparts and differ in addition to size, including iron.

The interface, downloading programs, video processing - everything flies and there are no even the slightest delays. And you don't have to buy a gigantic device from a reputable manufacturer to get the most out of the existing iron specifications. Yet many still believe that a smartphone with a diagonal above 4.7 inches is quite a spade-like contraption, even though the number of phablet fans, albeit slowly but steadily, is growing.

Camera

First, about the front module. It uses a 2 megapixel sensor that can capture both video and still images at a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. It has its own settings, such as HDR (resolution down to 1824 × 1026), image stabilization and SteadyShot function. The first two, by the way, cannot be activated at the same time: either stub or HDR.

And now we come to the third defining nuance of the smartphone - the rear camera. First of all, it should be noted that the device has a 1 / 2.3 sensor of 20.7 Mpixels. The output photographs have a resolution of 5248 × 3936 pixels (4: 3 ratio). By the way, none of the preset shooting modes is available at this resolution value, as well as the ability to shoot HDR photos. In the settings, you can only turn on image stabilization, which, in principle, is not needed in good lighting conditions.

If you switch the resolution to 8 MP (3264 × 2448 with an aspect ratio of 4: 3), then it becomes possible to use all the additional capabilities of the camera. By the way, there are more than enough of them here.

It's time to turn to some examples of captured photomaterials:

A scenario in which the device takes 61 frames in one second (30 before the shutter is released and 30 after) deserves a separate mention. Then you can choose the best of the resulting pictures. This action looks very impressive. In practice, this thing can be used from time to time. The only drawback is that the resolution of such images is only 1920 by 1080 pixels. It's good that the quality is maintained.

The manufacturer claims that the automatic camera is capable of recognizing up to 36 types of different shooting conditions. Perhaps this is actually the case, since there are really a lot of pre-installed scenarios. Among them, it is worth noting a few very exotic ones, such as a pet, gourmet or fireworks.

Under water, the display of the Z1 Compact, as well as in other devices from Sony, comes to a standstill and does not allow either focusing or changing shooting modes. The additional setting for working with the screen with gloves does not save the situation in any way. And only a special button on the right side of the smartphone helps out, due to which it is a pleasure to take photos or videos under water. Unfortunately, the Z Ultra did not provide such an opportunity.

In addition, the manufacturer has trained the device technology Smile Shutter(capturing smiles), set up the ability to make an expanded panorama, took care of installing additional reality ().

Interesting functionality is also possessed by the Info-eye feature, with the help of which you can take pictures of any object and get all the necessary information about it via the Internet in a convenient form without leaving the application. Of course, all this is true if the phone recognizes the photographed object. I only had at hand the Law "On Protection of Consumer Rights", a photo of which the utility successfully "chewed" and gave out all the information it found, including the name of the publisher. Not a Consultant +, of course, but already something!

The footage can be uploaded to the cloud via the Play Memories service. The size of the storage on the server is not limited, in contrast to the limitation for the quality of images: the maximum photo size is 1920 pixels on the long side. By the way, a Sony Entertainment Network account is required.

There is nothing particularly remarkable about the video settings. Various recording resolutions are available, the highest of which is 1920 x 1080 at 30 frames per second. Is that the ability to record HDR-video and proprietary image stabilizer SteadyShot are available for activation.

Of course, there are all the usual video settings found in a smartphone of this type, including some shooting scenarios similar to those of the photo mode. In general, the recording quality leaves a positive impression.

I suggest that you familiarize yourself with an example of a video captured by the device:

Sound

We continue the series of the main characteristics of the device, for which I consider it one of the best representatives of its class - the audio capabilities of a smartphone.

The music playback quality in the Z1 Compact is beyond praise.

The sound in a smartphone is even better than in the iPhone, which has already become a kind of industry standard: richer and more spacious. Among other things, there are a lot of pre-installed software enhancements.

For example, Clear Audio + technology pushes low frequencies into the background and emphasizes high frequencies. As a result, the sound stream becomes, as it were, closer to the listener, the voice is heard more clearly. After turning off this function, the sound becomes somehow muffled, as if listening to it through some kind of obstacle. I personally liked the feature.

In addition, there is a separate Clear Bass slider in the settings, which you can use to boost or cut low frequencies.

Let's go further. The Clear Stereo setting, I quote: "reduces the mutual influence of the right and left channels for true stereo reproduction." Sounds great, but in practice the difference is almost negligible.

The maximum volume of the Z1 Compact is 80% of that of the iPhone, that is, at peak volume values you can continue to listen and your ears, sorry, will not fall off.

The built-in video player has a standard set of functions and supports many modern formats (see the technical specifications section for more details). The device copes with heavy FullHD content quite tolerably.

Autonomous work

The Compact is equipped with a 2300 mAh non-removable battery. Not much, of course, but the screen here is not as gluttonous as those installed in the flagship devices. On average, with normal use (20-30 minutes of calls a day, 1 hour of Wi-Fi internet, push notifications in the background via 3G) the device is able to hold out on a single charge for about two days. This is a pretty decent figure. With intensive use, you should count on 1 day and no more.

Of course, like all Xperia devices, there is a STAMINA power saving mode. When activated, the phone can hold out for another day, again with normal use.

Sony's power optimization is a top mark.

The smartphone begins to actively drain the battery when recording video or using special modes for shooting, for example, Timeshuft burst. The case heats up a lot at such moments, and the percentages of the charge go away right before our eyes. I warned you!

Outcome

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact came out, in my opinion, a very versatile smartphone. I call it universal because everything is very balanced in it. During the review, I listed the key features of the device, such as an interesting design, high-quality body materials, a pleasant screen, a very good camera, impressive sound quality, battery life - everything is brought to mind here. Unless the screen resolution here is only 1280 × 720, but with a size of 4.3 inches, FullHD is completely unnecessary - it will only additionally waste battery power.

I remember with pleasure the Sony Xperia Z Ultra, which I used myself for a while. Everything about him was great except for the quality of the camera. That is, it had its own fly in the ointment. In the same LG G2, there is one significant drawback - the lack of support for memory cards. The Z1 Compact has no such limitation. It's almost perfect. There is nothing about which one could say: “Ugh! Well, how did they allow it ?! " It’s even somehow boring.

Is the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact a good buy?
Yes! I definitely recommend buying a smartphone if there is no craving for large screens or if there is a second device - a tablet. The average price for a smartphone has now stopped at around 20,000 rubles. This is an adequate price. Especially when you consider the cost of top-end devices, which is traditionally 30,000 rubles. The thing is that the Compact is the same flagship, only small.

The Sony Z1 Compact phone is, according to many experts, a successful attempt by the Japanese brand to please enthusiasts of mobile technology with a miniature, stylish and at the same time very functional and productive device. In terms of the characteristics of hardware and software, the smartphone is almost identical to the flagship model. The main difference between the two devices is design.

Did you manage to surprise experts and users with the appearance of the novelty? What is the originality of the concept itself, which is incorporated by the manufacturer into the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact smartphone, in relation to competing solutions within the Android platform and iOS line? Did the phone meet the expectations of the users who decided to become its owner?

Housing and management

Experts note the ergonomics and stylishness of the smartphone body. The dimensions of this, nevertheless, of the middle class, the device, as some experts observe, are very close to those of the branded iPhone 5S. The device is 127 mm long, 64.9 mm wide, and 9.5 mm thick. conveniently located. Due to the small size of the case, several keys can be used at once. Experts call an interesting solution a light indicator built into the voice speaker - this element is designed to inform the owner of the phone about all sorts of events.

The device - experts and many users admit - fits perfectly in the hand. The thoughtfulness of the color design of the case is noted. In addition, there are a large number of kits on the market with a wide variety of shades - white, black, pink and others. The same theses can be regularly encountered among users who leave reviews on the resources of the corresponding topic characterizing the Sony Z1 Compact.

The body of the device is protected from external influences by means of several elements at once. First, there is a tough, scratch-resistant film that sits over the front and back panels. Secondly, this is a special kind of plugs that ensure the tightness of the case (we will consider this property of the phone in more detail later). Opinions about the usefulness of the mentioned elements of the Sony Z1 Compact smartphone in the user and expert environment are very different. Some consider the moisture protection system to be a great solution, others find it a PR. One way or another, the main part of competing solutions, as experts note, is not equipped with such protection elements.

Display

Experts note that the quality of the picture on the smartphone screen remains high, regardless of the viewing angles. The display has a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. Its diagonal is 4.3 inches. The screen is made using TFT technology - not the most modern, but, as experts believe, ensuring the high quality of the matrix.

The display of the device is praised by everyone - both the manufacturer and users who wished to leave reviews after studying the Sony Z1 Compact. There is a high quality of color reproduction, as well as a minimum level of "pixelation" of the image on the screen.

Battery

The battery capacity of the Sony Z1 Compact smartphone is 2.3 thousand mAh. The battery life of the device declared by the manufacturer is 18 hours (when used purely for conversations). In the mode of playing songs - 94 hours, when watching a video - 12 hours.

Experts, having tested the smartphone, received figures, in general, comparable to those stated. Many experts note that the gadget's battery charges very quickly. The device has a special power saving mode.

Performance

The smartphone is equipped with 2 GB of RAM. The available built-in flash memory is 11 GB. You can install additional microSD modules up to 64 GB. The smartphone, like the flagship version (Sony Xperia Z1), has a very powerful MSM 8974 processor with a clock speed of 2.2 GHz and four cores. The graphics subsystem of the device is controlled by the high-performance Adreno 330 chip. These characteristics allow you to run a variety of applications on the device. Experts have not noted problems with the launch of many modern games on the Sony Z1 Compact. An overview of the hardware capabilities of such a technologically advanced mobile gadget will be incomplete if we do not record the results of device performance tests. As such, there are quite a few applications that allow you to measure power in specific indicators. Among the most popular is the Antutu benchmark. A smartphone performance test carried out by experts using this application showed a result of more than 35 thousand units. That's pretty decent for this type of gadget.

Software

The smartphone OS Android in version 4.2.2 is controlled. There are a large number of pre-installed programs, including interfaces for listening to the radio, the ease of use of which is especially emphasized by people who have already purchased a phone.

Some experts complain that there are even too many programs installed, and the owner of the device does not have much reason to find time to study the new products of the Google Play catalog. Many experts, ironically, say that you can make a separate review, revealing all the subtleties of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact software, along with studying the capabilities of the "hardware" of the smartphone.

Connection

There is support for most modern wireless interfaces - Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, as well as the innovative NFC standard, which is being actively implemented in retail as a convenient tool for paying for purchases using a smartphone. There is an ANT + interface. The modern technology of mobile Internet LTE is supported. In the course of tests carried out by experts, the phone kept communication within the framework of this innovative standard very stable.

Camera

The Sony Z1 Compact has a decent resolution of 20.7 megapixels. Moreover, it is very functional. It supports 8x digital zoom, autofocus, a large number of different modes, and an option for face recognition. There is a red-eye correction function. There is an interesting option AR Effect, using which, the user can complement the picture with colorful visual effects. Many experts point out: to reveal all the possibilities of the camera, you need a separate review that studies this hardware component of the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. In short, we note that experts (and consumers) generally speak very positively about the quality of pictures and videos taken from a smartphone.

Hull protection

Among the most notable features of Sony is the use of elements in the construction that provide reliable protection of the device from moisture. And not only from the effects of, say, rain and snow. The phone can withstand complete immersion in water. In addition, the smartphone can be operated if the screen is wet and the wearer's fingers are wet. Many people remember one of the commercials showing how the owners of the device took pictures, boldly dipping it into the sea wave. In theory, experts say, it is really possible to take a photo underwater with the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. True, it is doubtful that the photographs obtained in this way will be of high quality.

The system for protecting the device from moisture can be useful not only from the point of view of protecting the device, but also when the case needs to be cleaned from something. Experts draw attention to the fact that in order to achieve maximum protection of the phone, it is necessary to keep the plugs located on the case in a closed position.

Expert CV

What is the conclusion of most of the experts who took the time to make a review that reveals the technological details of the Sony Z1 Compact, as well as reflect a personal vision of the advantages and disadvantages of the device? Among the main advantages of the gadget, noted by experts, is the original design, as well as a pleasant color scheme. The technological advantages include support for the modern LTE communication standard, a high-quality camera, excellent sound, a good screen, and a sufficiently capacious battery. Many people note the high level of moisture resistance of the phone. Among the disadvantages of the device is not loud enough, according to some experts, the voice of the interlocutor, heard during conversations. At the same time, the perception of speech is a very subjective phenomenon, as in relation to other devices.

Problem solved

Advantages: - compact size (with the fashion for shovel phones it has become a rarity!) And, without exaggeration, stylish design (I have a yellow case) - quite ergonomic (convenient activation button, a lot of interface settings, high-quality case). Only the camera button grieves (more on this in another section) - a capacious battery (I have auto-syncing mail and WhatsApp in on-line mode, mobile Internet 24 hours a day, 2-3 hours of calls a day and using all sorts of heavy applications it keeps a stable day) - convenient indication of the charge level: in percentage (and not graphical, as often happens). The information shows reliable - the phone works properly even at 4% charge. The same HTC DesireX turned off very quickly after the charge went into the "red zone". After that, it was far from the first time to turn it on. There are no such problems here. - I was pleased with the good application (OfficeSuite) to replace MS Office and the pre-installed antivirus. I am aware of the possibility of downloading the free KingsoftOffice and the same Dr.Web, but I am pleased with the opportunity not to think about such things, but simply to use the phone :) Respect to the manufacturer, the same HTC did not think about it. Comments on the problems voiced in other reviews: - the sound during the conversation is normal (I am very demanding about this parameter) - no broken pixels or other defects were noticed; noticed - the camera absolutely suits me (but I'm not a pro and did not expect the quality of a camera from a mobile phone), Timeshift burst is included. - I am a sloppy person, but the caps, despite all their flimsy, did not tear off. - everything is in order with the internal memory. 11.6GB for applications, the rest is apparently for the operating system. Disadvantages: Serious two: 1. speakers. For the sake of water resistance, they are protected by something, which makes the sound distorted, and in relation to playback (not talking) it is also very quiet. Those. it cannot be used for conference calls or music playback other than headphones. Unlike HTC DesireX, which has successfully replaced the "frog". 2. pre-installed application "Google+" In the basic setting, it uploads photos of all applications to the public on the Google network automatically! I noticed it in time and turned it off. What if not? In general, to put it mildly, a strange decision of the manufacturer. Minor disadvantages: - when using several heavy applications at the same time in 2.5 weeks, it hangs twice for 1-2 seconds. - weak GPS - a solution with waterproof slot covers and recessed both (slots and covers) into the case for an amateur. I didn't get used to it right away. - a lot of unnecessary branded applications that cannot be removed. 164 MB is frustrating. - the flash really illuminates photos in daylight (I have not tried it in the dark). It was the same on all previous smartphones, so I fully admit that this is an inevitable evil. - the shooting button on the body does not activate the camera (as one might think), but takes pictures. In order to take a picture, you need to press it quite hard. Everything would be fine, but it is located too low and therefore it is inconvenient to use it. For a phone with such a camera, this is, frankly, a strange decision. Commentary: Convenient phone, but, IMHO, the price is not entirely justified. As soon as it becomes cheaper at least to 16-17tr, I will safely recommend it to everyone. Up to this point, you have to think. If you are ready to sacrifice the camera and design, and the volume of the speaker is not important, then you should consider the HTC One line. If you are not ready, then welcome to our club :) PS: I do not consider Samsung, since shovel phones are not my version of the word at all.

Screen type: IPS (In Plane Switching) is a high-quality liquid crystal matrix, which was created to eliminate the main disadvantages of matrices based on TN technology. The IPS-matrix in the entire spectrum most adequately reproduces colors at different viewing angles, with the exception of some positions and colors. TN-matrix has, as it were, a better response than IPS, but not always. For example, the IPS-matrix behaves better in transitions from gray to gray. This matrix is still resistant to pressure. Touching a TN or VA matrix results in "excitement" or a certain reaction on the screen. The IPS-matrix has no such effect. In addition, ophthalmologists confirm that the IPS-matrix is the most comfortable for the eyes. In this way, the IPS-matrix brings a bright and clear picture regardless of viewing angles, better for working on the Internet, watching movies. But the most important thing is for image processing and photo viewing. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) - Liquid crystal displays. The very first displays used in mobile devices, and not only in telephones. Their main feature is that they have very low power consumption due to the impossibility of displaying a color image. They do not emit light and therefore phones are upgraded with backlight lamps. Some phones had several different backlight colors based on the presence of different LEDs around the display's perimeter. This extraordinary solution was used, for example, in the Ericsson A3618 phone. Pixels are clearly visible on this type of display, and such displays cannot boast of a high resolution. In order to extend the life of such displays, they made them inverted, i.e. text and symbols were displayed not as filled pixels, but, on the contrary, inactive against the background of filled ones. This produces light text on a dark background. Currently, this type of display is used in the cheapest budget models (Nokia 1112) and as an external one in some clamshell phones (Samsung D830).

TFT (Thin Film Transistor) - Liquid crystal displays based on active matrix thin film transistors. There are three transistors for each pixel, corresponding to three colors (RGB - red, green, blue). At the moment, these are the most common displays and have a number of advantages over other displays. They are distinguished by the shortest response time and the rapid development - an ever-increasing resolution and number of colors. These displays are most common in mid-range phones and above. Working resolutions for them: 128x160, 132x176, 176x208, 176x220, 240x320 and others, less common. Examples: Nokia N73 (240x320, 262 thousand colors), Sony Ericsson K750i (176x220, 262 thousand colors), Samsung D900 (240x320, 262 thousand colors). TFTs are rarely used as external displays for clamshells.

CSTN (Color Super Twisted Nematic) - Color passive matrix liquid crystal displays. Each pixel of such a display consists of three combined pixels, which correspond to three colors (RGB). Some time ago, almost all phones with color displays were based on exactly this type. And now the lot of such displays is budget models. The main disadvantage of such displays is their slowness. The undoubted advantage of such displays is their cost, which is much lower than TFT. Based on simple logic, it can be assumed that in the future TFT will oust this type of displays from the market of mobile devices. The color evolution of such displays is quite extensive: from 16 to 65536 colors. Examples: Motorola V177 (128x160, 65 thousand colors), Sony Ericsson J100i (96x64, 65 thousand colors), Nokia 2310 (96x68, 65 thousand colors).

UFB (Ultra Fine and Bright) - Liquid crystal displays with increased brightness and contrast on a passive matrix. We can say that this is an intermediate option between CSTN and TFT. This type of display boasts lower power consumption compared to TFT. For the most part, such displays were used by Samsung in mid-range phones. This type of display is not widely used. Examples: Samsung C100 / 110 (128x128, 65 thousand colors).

TN is a type of TFT display matrix. Roughly speaking, TN is the simplest and cheapest TFT matrix. The viewing angles are the narrowest.
