Gnutik for cold forging do-it-yourself drawings. How to make a cold forging machine with your own hands. Types of home-made equipment and tools for plastic metal processing

A person who is not indifferent to forged products can only be envied. It has everything you need to implement the most daring design projects. Devices for the manufacture of cold forging elements can be purchased ready-made or made by hand, but in one case or another, you can be sure that it will be convenient and easy to work with them. At the same time, great physical strength is not required, all that is needed is to press the necessary buttons and turn the special levers in a timely manner.

The only thing to remember is that making cold forged products requires strict rules and consistency. In other words, cold forging is a step-by-step technological process in which metal blanks are deformed, depending on the desired project. To have a better idea about this work, you need to figure out what types of forging are, what popular forged elements are called, and what it looks like to make forged products with your own hands.

In the manufacture of metal products, 7 types of cold forging can be distinguished. These are some kind of stages of creating elements that need to be performed when working with blanks.

All work must be carried out in accordance with the requirements and rules, otherwise you should not hope for a beautiful forged product.

The most important stage is the forging of metal blanks. This is the largest, most responsible, complex and serious process, so it must be treated very carefully. Cold forging can be of several types:

  • Draft - it is carried out under high pressure. This is necessary in order to increase the workpiece on the sides, by reducing its height.
  • Broaching - this stage is performed by heating a metal part, followed by processing it with a hammer. This is necessary in order to reduce the cross-sectional area by increasing the length of the metal rod.
  • Firmware - this stage involves making holes inside the workpiece. When performing such work, you can get holes of different diameters and lengths. It is open and closed.

The draft and broach makes the structure of the metal workpiece more fragile, so further work must be carried out very carefully in order to prevent breakage of one or another part of the structure.

Cold Forging Tools

The manufacture of forged products in a cold way involves the use of several fixtures or machines. As mentioned above, they can be purchased or made by hand, but first, let's figure out what parts can be obtained using various machines.

For hand-made products, you will have to make special templates that allow you to create elements of various shapes and sizes.

How to work with the snail mechanism, you can see on the proposed video:

  • Universal mechanism - it allows you to perform several functions, cutting, riveting and forming metal products. By the way, such a device can be easily assembled with your own hands, which will greatly save your budget.
  • Gnutik - such a mechanism allows you to create an arc deformation of a metal part. But here it is necessary to carry out accurate calculations and measurements in order not to be mistaken with the bending radius.
  • Twister - the mechanism of this plan allows you to bend the workpiece along the longitudinal axis of the finished product. The principle of operation of such a mechanism is to bend the product by clamping it on one side and the other. In this case, the rotating handle will allow you to twist the part.
  • Wave - a mechanism of such a plan allows you to get wave-like parts from metal blanks. On such a machine, it is customary to make the “Boyarsky” or “Wave” gratings.
  • Stamp press - the name speaks for itself. Such a mechanism allows stamps with various carved elements to be applied to metal parts. Each master should have several such stamps in his arsenal, then the finished products will be more diverse. The principle of its operation is very simple, under the influence of pressure, clear prints from the templates remain on the metal elements.
  • Mechanical knot - this mechanism allows you to bend metal rods into a circle. In this case, the diameter of such products may be different. Therefore, in the arsenal of masters, such a device is indispensable.

Do-it-yourself cold forging, step-by-step instructions and expert advice

Oddly enough, but forged products can be made even at home. Of course, they will not be as pretentious as hot-worked elements, but as a decorative design they have no equal. All you need is a few of the tools described above, materials, and most importantly, desire. The rest is technology compliance.

The manufacturing process consists of several stages:

Starting work, check your calculations again, even a small error can spoil the appearance of the finished product, not to mention the fact that it may not fit the intended composition in size. Correcting and adjusting finished parts is always more difficult, it is much easier to check everything several times.

After making all the details, you can begin to assemble the intended composition. For fastening, it is better to use welding, but you should not overdo it with it, so as not to damage smaller elements.

The final stage will be the processing of the finished product, which involves grinding and painting the finished composition.

If you took up the production of forged elements in a cold way, then you probably studied the price market and assessed your financial capabilities. If not, then first pay attention to the cost of materials, the necessary equipment and how the finished product is processed. But in any case, a product made by oneself is worth all the costs. And you can reduce them on the equipment, if you make it yourself.

Let's look at the types of devices and the shapes that can be obtained with their help. We have prepared drawings and thematic videos for you. We will also consider the sequence of manufacturing a machine for cold forging with our own hands.

If you are just starting a cold forging workshop and want to avoid high costs, then making your own machines and fixtures will help you create your own small business without excessive costs.

Basic fixtures and machines

Cold forging machines are mainly designed for bending in an arc or angle, as well as for twisting. They can be manual or electrically powered.

The main types of machines and devices for cold forging:

  • "Gnutik"
  • "Twister"
  • "Snail"
  • "Globe"
  • "Wave"
  • "Torch"

Device "Gnutik"

Purchased or self-made "Gnutik" is a universal device that allows you to get an arc or angle from a rod. It is a base with a slider, on which a stop with an angle (90° or another as needed) and two cylindrical fixed stops is fixed. By moving the slider and the corner stop, the rod is bent at an angle. To obtain an arc, a third cylinder is provided, rotating on the side opposite from the corner stop.

The fixture can be made on a horizontal or vertical platform.

It looks like a homemade "Gnutik":

Device "Twister"

"Twister" - a tool for twisting bars, mostly square section, along the longitudinal axis. This simple device can be manual and electric. Principle of operation: both ends of the rod are fixed, then one fastener begins to turn, twisting the metal to the required shape.

Device "Snail"

The Snail tool is designed to create swirls (or spirals) and "currencies" (S-shaped parts). There are various designs.

One of the design options: 1 - snail plowshare; 2 - the basis of the machine; 3 - pressure roller; 4 - lever for controlling the pressure roller; 5 - base fastening; 6 - a finger for fixing the plowshares; 7 - groove for the pressure roller; 8 - axis of the control lever; 9 - spring for pressing the roller; 10 - clamp for the workpiece; 11 - leading share of the snail; 12 - main axis; 13 - levers

The result should be something like this:

Another lightweight design for bending rolled products with a cross section of up to 12 mm:

1 - cochlea segment; 2 - eccentric; 3 - handle; 4 - base; 5 - guide skids; 6 - axis; 7 - slider; 8 - axle nut; 9 - roller mounting axis; 10 - roller; 11 - drive axle; 12 - eccentric guide; 13 - central segment of the cochlea; 14 - eccentric lamb; 15 - main leg; 16 - connecting pin of cochlea segments; 17 - corrective screw; 18 - connecting ear of the cochlea segments

Often the “Snail” fixture is made on a support, especially if you need to bend thick rolled products.

Device "Globe"

Such a device looks like a school protractor and is designed to make arcs with a large bending radius from a strip, square, circle or hexagon. First, one end of the workpiece is fixed with a bend, then it is bent along the entire length according to the template. The principle of operation is somewhat similar to the operation of a canning machine for conservation.

Operating principle

Production of "Snails" with a drive

The electric "snail" facilitates the production of curls and "currencies". This is especially valuable when the work is not “for the soul”, but for the manufacture of a large number of the same type of products on a stream when working to order.

Below are the steps for assembling a machine for bending a rod with a maximum section of 10x10 mm. The 0.5 kW/1000 rpm engine is working at the limit of its capabilities. Performs 6 shaft revolutions per minute. The segments of the snail are machined from a round blank St.45 without heat treatment, 25 mm high and 20 mm thick. The snail is mounted on a shaft on bearings from the rear wheel of the motorcycle - 7204. The supporting roller is fixed rigidly in the groove. Pulleys are installed between the motor and the gearbox.

Below are the drawings of the segments of the cochlea.

For a more massive rod (from 12 mm), the engine power should be more than a kilowatt. The photographs below show a machine with a 2.2 kW, 1000 rpm motor, giving a shaft output of about 10 rpm. This is a machine for professional use. A used gearbox was used, the matrix was cut from a workpiece 30 mm thick - the most time-consuming process.

For cold forging, you will also need an anvil and a hammer. The forge is not needed, it is required only for hot forging.

Advice! Before starting work, draw a full-size sketch of the future design. This will help to adjust the elements and not get confused during assembly.

To found your own metalworking workshop, the main six machines are enough: a bender, a twister, a flashlight, a volume, a snail, and a wave.

The production of metal parts requires special equipment capable of creating a force that forms the shape of an object. Alternatively, you can purchase relatively inexpensive devices. However, it is not difficult to independently make almost any cold forging machine with your own hands.

What is required for this we will consider in the course of our article.

Of course, if the budget allows, you can not particularly complicate your life and purchase universal equipment for cold forging metal. Moreover, such a machine in itself combines all the individual manual devices. But the rather small cost of such a workbench makes it inaccessible to many home workshops.

What do-it-yourself cold forging tools can be made and what to produce on them?

To establish your own metalworking workshop, the main six machines are quite enough: a bender, a twister, a flashlight, a volume, a snail, and a wave.

These homemade machines are capable of processing the main types of materials used in cold metalworking technology: squares, bars (with a cross section of up to 14 millimeters) and a steel strip, 3-6 mm thick with a width in the range of 25 millimeters. the same operation as the factory equipment: bending, twisting or pressing without loss of quality.

Also, on a home-made manual machine, it is quite possible to produce the main elements of cold forged products: curls, volutes, baskets, required for further assembly of finished products. Moreover, the forging equipment itself is compact, it can be easily placed in a garage workshop.

Learning to work with a cold forging tool is very simple. It does not require special knowledge about the properties of the metal and its further processing (annealing, tempering or hardening). The training and production process is practically safe, the equipment and materials do not work with high temperatures, and the working mechanisms are very simple.

The only drawback in cold forging metal and working on manual equipment is the possibility of marriage if mistakes are made. But the main problem is that defects are very difficult to fix. Defective elements can be corrected only by heating the metal in a furnace or on a burner.

The simplest for self-assembly will be: snails, gnicks and twisters. They do not require expensive tools. All you need is welding, a cutting tool, drawings with materials and a little understanding in mechanics.

So, how to make homemade cold forging machines with your own hands?

Assembly of different types of equipment

For the initial stage of arranging a cold metalworking workshop, three main devices will be required: a bender, a twister and a snail. What elements can be produced on them?

A bender is a device that greatly simplifies the bending of a part and the production of bends of any shape.

It easily handles rolled products in the form of steel strip and rod with dimensions of 12x12 millimeters. In addition to corner parts, the bender can create arc-shaped parts.

The twister serves to twist a long workpiece around its axis into a longitudinal spiral. In hot forging, there is a similar tool - a crank. The twister is similar to this device in its design. This is a frame on which a collar with a rotating head and a slider are fixed, which limits and fixes the desired length of the part. Parts twisted on such equipment are a frequent element used to assemble window grilles, fences, railings and other types of fences.

If you install additional devices in the form of a shaft on the twister, then it will be able to produce voluminous baskets.

The snail is perhaps the most famous manual cold forging machine. Volute and various parts twisted around the axis are produced on its conductor. The assembled device consists of a kind of frame (round / square), a conductor (spiral) and a roller with a manual drive in the form of a lever are fixed on it. By pressing the drive lever and feeding the workpiece, any type of spiral can be twisted without problems.

The main thing in the manufacture of manual equipment for cold forging of metal is the observance of three basic principles:

  1. The length of the lever drive is calculated so that sufficient force is applied to the metal.
  2. It is best to make the components of the installations prefabricated or movable, then it will be possible to easily adjust the dimensions of the elements produced.
  3. All parts of the conductors are made with a sufficient margin of safety, and the connections must be of high quality.

Observing such principles, it is quite feasible to manufacture normal metalworking equipment with excellent performance.

The listed three installations with the mechanism working manually, allow to make the majority of names of production without a metal warming up.

Gnutik assembly

This cold forging machine has a wide range of applications. With it, you can bend parts of any configuration. The device is quite simple, it consists of a base on which the rollers are mounted, a wedge (setting bend) and control levers. The machine itself can be made in a vertical or horizontal design.

It is easier to make a horizontal type on your own.

  • It is necessary to prepare a frame in which mounting holes are drilled for mounting the rollers, wedge and lever.
  • The wedge should move along the bed (controlled by pressing the lower lever). Its position should be interchangeable, so it will be possible to adjust the angle and steepness of the bend. To do this, it is better to make it on a screw thread, screwing in which changes the distance of the wedge.
  • The upper arm is used to shape the workpiece into an arc shape.

After watching the video, you can understand how such a machine works and the principle of its device

Making a snail

The photo shows the main parts of the snail cold forging fixture. The formation of the element occurs due to a special conductor, curled with a spiral (snail). This part, preferably, should be two-part. The manufacture of the machine is as follows.

  • A frame is prepared in a round or square shape. For its manufacture, it is better to use metal 5-6 mm.
  • Holes are drilled in the base for fastening the conductor (its two parts) and the working lever.
  • A rotating roller is mounted on the side, which will set the movement of the workpiece.
  • The lever must have sufficient strength, it can be made from an appropriate profile or pipe (with thick walls).
  • The conductor is made of thick metal, curved in a spiral. It has holes for mounting bolts.

Below are photos of the drawings of the conductor and the device itself.

For a more understandable principle of operation of such equipment, watch the video provided:

Hand-made do-it-yourself cold forging machines with this design are quite capable of bending bars and squares of various sections up to 14 millimeters.

It is worth remembering that a greater force on a thick workpiece can be created using a longer lever, so an additional extension for such a drive can be provided.

There are other variants of the snail. For example, with a drive in the form of a gate located in a horizontal plane. Schematic drawings of such a device are shown in the photo below.

How to make a twister

The twister (or torsion bar) has a horizontal arrangement of parts. It consists of a frame on which a knob with a rotating head is attached, and a slider that rigidly fixes the workpiece and regulates the length of the product.

  • First you need to prepare a workbench (table) where the device will be fixed.
  • The bed can be made from a strong I-beam or any other material that has sufficient strength. Its length is selected depending on the parameters of the processed workpieces.
  • A slider is made on the frame. Its lower part should move along the device and be fixed in the desired position. Bolt holes can be drilled for mounting. The part where the workpiece will be inserted can be made to its size (through hole) or made from a vise.
  • A rotating head collar can also be made to fit a specific workpiece or use a lathe chuck (small sizes)
  • The unit is mounted on the table so that the edge of the table does not interfere with turning the knob.

As in the case of a snail, the length of the lever determines the force that is applied to the metal being processed.

If you make an additional mount for the shaft, then on such a torsion bar it will be possible to produce volumetric baskets by twisting a rod onto a template.

The principle of operation of the machine is shown in the video:

Having studied the information, you can also make devices such as a wave (wave-like elements), a flashlight (baskets) or a volumetric (volumetric elements with parts curved in different planes).

If possible, then some of these machines can be made electrically driven by installing an engine with the appropriate power for this.

What technologies and techniques are used in cold forging, what do you need to know about production operations? More on this later in our article.

Today, small home workshops for metal processing have become widespread. This is both a hobby and an additional income for the family budget. Do-it-yourself cold forging is more common. This technology does not require large expenditures at the initial stage, and handicrafts are valued quite highly.

What technologies and techniques are used in this way of metalworking, what do you need to know about production operations? More on this later in our article.

The cold method processes mainly rolled metal in the form of bars, squares, circles, strips or sheets.

For production, special devices and tools are used, and often they are highly specialized and not suitable for work in other areas.

Heating blanks to forging temperature is not provided for by technology that uses one of the main properties of the metal - ductility. Heating is possible only partially in the places of bending of some products (for example, if the metal of the source material is too thick).

Cold forging of metal is used for the manufacture of gratings, fences, gates, gates (and individual elements of their decorations), furniture frames and various decorative details.

At the same time, during the production of these products, the metal can be pressed and bent, which makes the product even stronger than during hot forging, since the properties of the metal do not change, and the crystal lattice, on the contrary, is strengthened due to compression.

Cold forging at home is quite simple, but at the same time, a complex process that requires experience. What do you need to know about such metalworking, and what is required for the manufacture of products without heating materials?

Cold forging with your own hands

The entire workflow for creating products using cold forging can be divided into several stages.

  • Drawing or diagram of the finished product.
  • Selection of materials.
  • Metal processing and parts manufacturing.
  • Assembly and finishing.

Drawing

Bending is practically the main process on which cold forging is built. The machines listed above (except for the twister and flashlight) operate on the same technological principle. Most often, a snail is used, which forms a large list of various kinds of curls (monograms, volos, spirals, and others).

Torsion is built on the property of metal - plasticity and the ability to maintain a given shape. During such processing, the workpiece is twisted under force around its axis. Usually the procedure is done on a twister. However, elements such as baskets are produced using a flashlight. He is able to twist several blanks, while forming a three-dimensional element.

Usually all processing is carried out in a cold way, however, sometimes heating of certain points on the workpiece is required. This is done when bending or twisting thick parts, or when defective elements need to be corrected. Heating can be carried out in forge furnaces or with a gas cutter to a temperature of 200-300 degrees, which is much lower than the forging temperature.

Also, in cold metal processing, standard methods are used: cutting, chopping, grinding, and others. For this, grinders, cutting wheels, grinders, guillotines, chisels and others are used.

Assembly and finishing

These two stages complete the process of manufacturing products by cold forging.

The assembly of parts into a single combination is carried out in several ways:

  1. On rivets.
  2. On collars.
  3. Welding.

The easiest and fastest method to assemble a product is electric or gas welding (the latter is used less often).

However, some parts are attached to clamps and rivets, if this is provided for by the style design.

Previously, forge welding was used, which today has lost its relevance due to the laboriousness of the process.

Finishing includes grinding, cleaning metal surfaces, as well as applying a decorative coating (paint or any other). After that, the work is considered completed and the installation of the finished product is carried out as needed.

What can you add to the material of this article from personal experience? Share it in the discussions and leave your comments.

With the help of a machine with your own hands, you can make beautiful curly metal parts.

A homemade snail is not so difficult to assemble, so even someone who has little experience in such work can make it.

In the article we will analyze the pluses of cold forging, and also tell you how to make a tool for working with it yourself - drawings, a template, videos and photos will help you in your work, and as a result you will get a useful and easy-to-use tool for working with metal.

Pros and features of the process

Cold forging is a popular type of work, due to the fact that it can be used to create unusual parts of various shapes and sizes.

Using a cold forging machine, you can make a fence for a flower bed, a decorative lantern, an unusual fence, railings or handles for a bench, and other elements. How the details created through this process look like, you can see in the photo.

The advantage of cold forging is also that it is quite easy to make a machine with which you can create such parts with your own hands. This will help save on the purchase of expensive equipment.

The cold forging process consists of three main elements: bending, pressing and welding parts. The equipment needed for this process is quite simple and compact, you can make it yourself and it won't take up much space in your workshop or garage.

With cold forging, you can start learning metal processing, because. this process is simpler and safer because you don't have to deal with high temperatures as you would with other types of welding.

For this process, a ready-made template is usually used - that is, blanks of parts.

Of course, cold forging has its own subtleties, they mainly lie in the fact that the part is easily damaged or deformed in the process: forged elements often break, and it is no longer possible to correct the defect, so forging must be done very carefully.

However, using a high-quality machine and a drawing of a future part, you can easily learn how to create twisted, wavy and other unusual shapes. You can see the options in the photo above.

The process of processing blanks by cold forging takes place in several stages. The first step is to create a template or drawing of the future design.

Different machines provide different opportunities for creating patterns - it depends on the complexity of the tool.

For example, the simplest do-it-yourself machines can only bend products, while more complex models can create patterns, etc.

After the template or drawing is ready, you need to buy the required amount of material in accordance with your calculation. For cold forging, you will need iron bars, you can buy them at the store.

Rods for cold forging should not be too thick, otherwise it will be difficult to bend them. The next stage is the manufacture of parts with your own hands.

The most important thing here is to set the settings correctly so that the parts are not damaged or deformed during the operation of the machine, because. it will be impossible to fix the problem.

Lastly, the parts made are fixed to the frame. This is done by welding.

You need to be especially careful when welding with your own hands with thin-walled tubes, because. they are easy to burn through, and then the structure will become faulty and you will have to do it all over again.

You can watch the entire forging process on the video before you start working on your parts.

But before you start cold forging, you, of course, need to make the machine that is needed for this. The Snail machine is the most common apparatus for processing metal products by do-it-yourself cold forging.

You can see all the stages of creating a machine on the video - there is nothing complicated in this, and almost everyone will be able to cope with this matter on their own.

Creating a machine

The manufacturing process of the machine has several stages, after completing which one after another, you will receive a finished tool with which you can create figured products for your summer house or home.

Before you start cold forging, you need to make a template and drawing. It is carried out on millimeter paper, which can reflect the exact dimensions of the future product. On it you need to depict a spiral with increasing turns.

The turns should increase in accordance with the pitch if you want to make symmetrical products, but if this is not important, then the turns of the spiral may increase unevenly.

Before assembling the machine, you need to determine the diameter of the workpieces that you will process on it. The step must be chosen based on this value: it must be greater than the diameter of the rod that you will process.

If the step is not large enough, then you simply cannot pull the parts out of the machine without damaging it. Thus, all the work will be done in vain.

A home-made working surface of the snail can be made of sheet metal with a thickness of 4 mm or more. The size of the surface depends on what size parts you will process - you must first draw up a drawing so that all dimensions are clear.

To make the mold, use strip metal that is at least 3mm thick. Thus, it will be easy to work with a homemade snail. To facilitate the process, you need to fix one of the edges of the workpiece so that it does not slip out.

Sketch of the machine for the snail: Figure 1: 1 - the leading plowshare of the snail, 2 - the main axis, 3 - levers for applying force, 4 - clamp for the workpiece; figure 2: 1-snail share, 2-machine platform, 3- pressure roller, 4- lever for controlling the pressure roller, 5-platform fastening, 6-finger for fixing the snail shares, 7- groove along which the pressure roller runs, 8 - axis of the pressure roller control lever, 9 - spring for roller attraction; Figure 3 - the principle of operation of the device: 1 - the snail turns; figure 4 - examples of products made using a snail.

For the latch, you can use a cut piece of the rod, which is not inferior in size to the strip. During cold forging, you must also attach the part to the workbench.

Since the effect on the part is quite strong during cold forging, you need to think about fixing separately, because. you won’t be able to hold the workpiece with your own hands - it can slip off and ruin all the work.

The rest of the snail parts are quite easy to assemble - the main thing is to use the drawing and watch the video before proceeding with the process yourself.

The machine you made can be either monolithic or collapsible - decide in advance which design will be more convenient for you and make a drawing to carry out all the work in accordance with it.

If you want the homemade snail to be monolithic, then weld the machine to the work site so that the elements are motionless.

The most important thing with this type of construction is to correctly and securely fix the end of the part that you will be processing.

If the cold forging machine is planned to be collapsible, then mounting holes must be made on the working site, with which it will be possible to connect the “body” of the machine to the platform.

The removable design is good in that it is more convenient to transfer it if necessary, or remove the machine to replace or repair damaged parts - this will not be possible with a monolithic type of construction.

However, with a removable machine, the quality of fixing parts will be worse - you will have to constantly tweak the threaded connections yourself, because. during operation, they will inevitably become weaker.

There are other options for cold forging machines, but the Snail machine is the most functional, and besides, it is not difficult to make it yourself. How to make it, as well as other product options, see the video.

If you decide to use the snail as a hobby tool, you should consider that although the device itself will not cost you much (it does not require any specific parts and tools), cold forging still involves some expenses.

First, you will have to spend money on the materials themselves that you will process. And the larger the product is planned, the more money you have to spend.

To estimate costs, always make a preliminary drawing of the product, which reflects its actual dimensions. For example, to make a small flower stand, you will need to spend at least 2,000 rubles on twigs.

How much material more complex products will require - you can calculate for yourself.

The cost will also depend on the complexity of the pattern that you will create using the snail - the more complex it is, the more expensive the product will cost you.

You will not have to spend a lot of money on tools for the machine itself, however, if you have not previously been involved in the manufacture of such tools, then it is better to buy ready-made equipment for it - in this case, the machine will last you longer, and it will be easier to work on it.

The final processing after forging may also require some funds - at a minimum, you will have to buy a primer and paint to give the part a finished attractive look.

Despite these expenses, snail forging is still an affordable and popular tool for metalworking, whether it be a hobby or a professional, but in this case, over time, you may need a more powerful tool.
