Most residents of old-style apartment buildings feel daily discomfort due to small, inconvenient kitchens, in which it is impossible to arrange a family feast, and often there is not enough space even for cooking.

In this situation, an excellent solution would be to install a countertop-window sill in the kitchen room, which will free up space and make the room more ergonomic. However, despite the spaciousness of kitchens in modern homes, this technique is also relevant for them, as it allows them to change the design of the room and make major repairs. There is no particular difficulty here, it is simply recommended to carry out work before leveling the slopes of the windows.

Materials for kitchen countertops

    Save

It would be more logical if the window sill, which is a continuation of the countertop, is made of the same material from which all other horizontal work surfaces in the kitchen are made. Special requirements are imposed on the design due to constant exposure to sunlight, the material is selected taking into account this condition. It is also necessary to focus on the design of the kitchen as a whole, to evaluate how it fits with the rest of the furniture.

Different materials are used for the manufacture of a window sill-countertop:

  • fake diamond;
  • natural stone;
  • wood;
  • metal;
  • plastic;
  • Chipboard.

Each has pros and cons.

Natural stone

    Save

One of the most reliable options, it has the following advantages:

  • resistance to most chemical and mechanical influences, that is, durability;
  • immunity to ultraviolet light;
  • resistance to high temperatures.

The disadvantages of the material include:

  • high cost;
  • complexity in processing;
  • great weight.

The most attractive stone for making a window sill as an extension of a countertop is onyx. It lets light through and looks beautiful in the sun. Marble can be spoiled by liquids of high acidity or with coloring properties (juices, coffee, tea). Granite can be radioactive, so it must be selected carefully. Only granite is suitable, which belongs to the I category of safety.

Fake diamond

    Save

An alternative to natural stone is artificial stone made of special materials.

Advantages:

  • strength;
  • mechanical stability;
  • immunity to liquids;
  • heat resistance;
  • variety of colors;
  • lack of tendency to fade in the sun.

The downside is the high price. Artificial stone is probably the best choice.

Wood

    Save

Natural wood is a classic kitchen countertop material with the following benefits:

  • ecological cleanliness;
  • durability;
  • beautiful appearance;
  • wide range of shades, etc.

However, wood has serious disadvantages:

  • susceptibility to mechanical damage;
  • susceptibility to high temperatures, which can even cause a fire on the countertop;
  • fear of moisture;
  • the need for special care.

To improve the protective properties, the wood is treated with special wax-based agents. But you do not need to choose it when they plan to make a surface from the window sill for work. If the extended window sill becomes a bar counter, then the choice of wood is justified.

Metal

In a high-tech kitchen, a metal countertop sill is appropriate. The advantages of metal are as follows:

  • spectacular view;
  • immunity to sudden changes in temperature, moisture, UV rays;
  • ease of care.
  • high probability of scratching;
  • the likelihood of corrosion due to long-term use.

Plastic

    Save

A good and economical option for making countertops is plastic.

Advantages:

  • relative durability and reliability;
  • resistance to moisture and light;
  • a variety of colors and textures;
  • the ability to create solid worktops of large dimensions;
  • ease of care;
  • low cost.

Disadvantages:

  • susceptibility to thermal effects;
  • high probability of scratching from sharp metal objects.

Modern high-quality plastic practically does not have the listed disadvantages, but it costs an order of magnitude higher than ordinary plastic.

MDF and chipboard

For budget repairs, countertops are suitable instead of a window sill in the kitchen from chipboard or MDF. They have the following advantages:

  • relative durability;
  • moisture resistance;
  • ease of care;
  • variety of colors;
  • low cost.

Disadvantages:

  • high probability of mechanical damage;
  • complexity of installation;
  • lack of heat resistance.

The choice of chipboard or MDF for the manufacture of countertops in the continuation of the window sill will be justified if high loads will not act on it.

Design solutions (design photo)

To expand the kitchen space from the window sill, you can create the following designs:

  • work and dining table;
  • bar counter;
  • countertop with built-in sink;
  • full working surface.

One or another option is chosen depending on the layout of the kitchen and the need to install furniture or household appliances in this room.

Dining or work table

Often, a window sill in a kitchen is converted into a dining table, so that space is used more economically. In addition, it is pleasant to eat by the window, since there is natural light and the opportunity to observe what is happening on the street. A table-top window sill as a dining table can have very small dimensions.

The worktop, turning into the window sill, in the kitchen, the photo of which is presented, can be additionally equipped with a folding table, which, if necessary, allows you to increase the area of the tabletop. When one or two people live in an apartment, it will be possible to get by with just one folding table. The windowsill is great for equipping a full-fledged desktop.

Small shelves can be hung on the sides of the window to create storage space for papers and office supplies.

Bar counter

When the kitchen does not have a seating area, a table where you could sit with friends, you can equip an elegant bar counter from the countertop on the windowsill.

This design is appropriate both in a spacious room and in a small kitchenette, since the counter can be any size and can play the role of a table. In rooms of a large area, a window sill looks spectacular, which smoothly turns into a curved bar counter, which stands against one of the walls or is an element that separates the living room area from the kitchen. This design is very functional. With a balcony, the configuration is usually such that a window sill with a countertop can be connected to a counter and an island in the kitchen, be equipped with cupboards, drawers and a built-in oven.

Work surface-table top, turning into a window sill

It is most practical to use a window-sill table in the kitchen as a full-fledged work surface on which food is cut and prepared for further culinary processing.

Here you need to choose a material suitable for wear resistance and reliability that can withstand active use. From the bottom of the work surface, different cabinets and drawers are usually made, due to which it is possible to significantly increase the number of storage spaces. It is important to provide for the possibility of warm air flow from the radiator to the window, for which the battery is usually covered with cabinets with latticed doors or removed by installing a "warm floor". In some apartments, the battery is initially located somewhat to the side of the window, and under the window there is a "winter refrigerator", on which doors with additional thermal insulation can be installed.

Washing by the window

An interesting solution is the location of the kitchen sink in the countertop windowsill, but this is not feasible in every kitchen. This option is used, as a rule, when decorating the design of kitchen rooms in private houses, where sewage and water supply pipes are quite often located near the window.

A sink built into the countertop looks harmonious in a kitchen decorated in Provence, country and other styles that tend to antiquity or classics. Thanks to this arrangement, the sink in the kitchen will become cozy and washing dishes will be more pleasant.

With any installation method in the kitchen countertops, you may need to raise or lower the level of the window sill. Modern methods make it possible to do this at no additional cost. But if you don't want to touch the window sill, the gap or joint between it and other horizontal surfaces can be masked using a special corner.

Before choosing the most suitable countertop design instead of a window sill, carefully study different examples of kitchen interiors. It is advisable to ask your friends, who have already installed a countertop by the window in their kitchen, whether they are satisfied with the innovation.

Surely everyone at least once thought about how uselessly the space under the windows is used. Often, flower pots are placed on the windowsill in the kitchen, and sometimes various household items are stored there. But you can use it with much greater benefit. For example, an installed countertop sill will help form a very practical and fairly functional area.

Today, redesigning kitchens in apartments to maximize its functionality is a popular trend. Often, the owners are looking for the most interesting options, modern ideas, opportunities that allow using the maximum number of square meters in order to optimally place furniture, interior elements and appliances.

This is especially true for small apartments, in which every centimeter is worth its weight in gold. However, the idea of rationalization is no less relevant for spacious rooms.

One of the most successful solutions in the kitchen is a countertop window sill. In this case, you can use the free space as efficiently as possible, both under the windows and at the window level.

Note! While this idea is quite practical and interesting, it will require excellent planning skills, as well as considerable financial costs, to implement it.

Often in apartments, window sills have an auxiliary function. A radiator is most often placed in this area. It is he who acts as a stumbling block for most rationalizers.

How to make a window sill on a balcony or kitchen a functional area depends on the flight of the artist's thoughts, on the needs of the owners, as well as on the geometry, area and a number of other features of the room.

Sill-worktop in the kitchen: know-how in the field of interior design

If earlier the kitchen window sill was used exclusively as a stand for pots with flowers and storage of small household utensils, now it's time to get acquainted with many other options for its operation. Especially if the area of the premises is limited and there is a desire to create an extremely functional area on modest square meters. The design of the window sill can be arranged in such a way that it turns into a bar counter, a workspace or a dining table.

Sill table in the kitchen: a smart workspace

The simplest and most natural way out in the event that there is not enough space to organize the working area is to create a table from the windowsill. The fact is that a rather wide window sill by itself may well act as a countertop or a horizontal auxiliary surface. And if you enlarge it a little and cover it with a layer of waterproof hygienic solution, you can get a functional work table in the kitchen.

In the presented case, it is not recommended to use the plastic window sill that comes with the glass unit. This is due to the fact that it is not suitable in terms of characteristics for such misuse. The windowsill will soon be covered with stains and scratches. Therefore, the best solution would be to first replace the standard profile or fix the worktop directly on top of it.

When choosing material for a table instead of a window sill in the kitchen, one should take into account that it will be in conditions of high humidity, as well as constant temperature changes. Therefore, you should look for an option that, despite the loads, will last quite a long time. It is best to give preference to natural granite or high-quality composite material.

Note! Having decided to design a built-in table in the kitchen to use it as a working tabletop, it is imperative to install a special skirting board in the place where it adjoins the walls in order to create protection for the finish from running water and dirt. In addition, you will need to protect the slopes (for example, sew them up with plastic).

In the process of creating a kitchen with a countertop window sill, it is necessary to take into account the presence of a radiator under it. To prevent the surface from interfering with the flow of heated air, it will be necessary to cut holes in it, which, for aesthetics, are recommended to be closed with gratings. As for the worktop itself, it will be more convenient to combine it with the remaining working area, giving it the shape of the letter "G".

When planning a large-scale renovation, involving a complete alteration of the kitchen space, you can turn the window sill area into a part of the work surface. To do this, you will need to position the furniture set along the corresponding wall. In this case, a sink or a stove can successfully fit in opposite the window.

If a decision is made to equip a functional tabletop on a table instead of a window sill, the free space under it should be used with the greatest benefit, placing floor cabinets there. In this way, it will turn out to increase the number of locations for storing food or utensils and at the same time to fit the countertop of a non-standard size into the interior, linking it with the main set.

Decorative details and similar facades will help to achieve the greatest similarity. Sometimes even large household appliances are placed under such a table - a washing machine or a dishwasher. However, in this case, it will be necessary to move the basic communications closer to the windows, which will significantly complicate the repair process.

Bar counter window sill: a modern solution for kitchens

An excellent alternative to a rather high kitchen window sill can be a bar counter (like the one you can see in a cafe - with a wonderful view from the window). This will also require replacing it with a countertop, although more freedom is given here in terms of the choice of materials:

  • plastic;
  • glass;
  • Chipboard or MDF;
  • wood.

However, in the event that the edge of the window is lowered below the standard 115 cm, this is also not a problem. The bar counter can be fixed at the "desired" height, and the window sill itself can be dismantled or turned into an additional shelf. In small kitchens where there is not enough room for a full table for eating, this will solve many problems. But such a recreation area will not interfere with spacious rooms, especially if you can admire a beautiful view from the window.

Note! The window sill, which serves as a bar counter, requires chairs with footrests of suitable height. It is important that the seats and the lower edge of the table top are spaced approximately 30 cm apart.

In each case, the dimensions of the bar are selected individually. First of all, at least one of the devices should be placed on it, that is, the width of the tabletop cannot be less than a third of a meter. Its edge will need to be moved forward at a distance sufficient so that those who sit behind the counter do not rest their feet on the wall under the window.

If we are talking about kitchens with a medium or large area, in this case, the countertop under the windowsill is placed in a perpendicular direction, turning it into a console. Here you can no longer do without additional fittings: support legs, as well as mounting angles that will take the weight of the tabletop onto themselves.

Note! If you do not use auxiliary parts, the tabletop will become a kind of lever that, even with the smallest load, will break the frame or cause cracks in the glass unit.

While the fastening process takes time and extra effort, in the long run, such a rack design will provide the ability to comfortably accommodate a large number of people.

When planning a kitchen with a window sill, it would be a great solution to combine several functional areas with a single surface by ordering a complex structure made of composite materials (for example, made of artificial stone or acrylic). In this case, the desktop will smoothly go into the windowsill or bar counter, and then into the dining table.

It is worth noting that in terms of installation and execution, the presented structure is characterized by complexity. However, despite this, it significantly increases the functionality of even the most compact kitchens. Yes, and such a product looks very worthy - the best proof of this are numerous photos of a kitchen with a countertop under the window.

Window sill-table top: ideal for organizing a dining area

This solution is the least common among designers in the case of organizing space near the window. Nonetheless, a countertop instead of a window sill in the kitchen as an impromptu dining table is a great way to rationalize space.

The presented option is suitable for both small and spacious rooms and can serve as an independent design technique. Having made the right choice of materials, shades, as well as combining with other pieces of furniture, a kitchen with a countertop by the window can be turned into an original and stylish room.

This kitchen design has several advantages over a standard meal table:

  • saves kitchen space, providing the ability to move freely;
  • allows you to admire the scenery outside the window during breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The table-top in the window sill can be made in two versions - a deaf and an open type. In the first case, it is assumed that people will sit facing the window, and in the second, the tabletop is placed perpendicular to the window sill itself, turning it into an island element. Depending on the wishes and preferences of the owners, you can implement any of the options, each of which is endowed with its own advantages.

The blank countertop positioning method is convenient for small families of several people and provides the opportunity to save space as much as possible. The island-style table top that goes into the window sill allows chairs to be placed on two sides, making it possible to accommodate many guests.

The design of an open window sill can be realized in the form of an impromptu bar counter, if you place special shelves under it for storing bottles with elite alcohol.

Kitchen countertops with a sink: the dream of every housewife

A window sill in the form of a countertop equipped with a sink is the most desirable, but difficult and costly project to implement. This is due to the fact that a problem arises as to how to carry out the supply of pipes to the window. In addition, washing directly in the windowsill brightens up the routine with a pleasant view of the surroundings, but in practice it does not always bring convenience.

Note! In the event that the window slopes are not very wide, when organizing a sink in the countertop for the window sill, the window will often get splashed. In addition, the mixer will act as an obstacle to opening the window.

Often, in the process of supplying pipes, both for hot and cold water, there are no difficulties. But above the supply of pipes for draining from the sink directly to the riser, you will have to work hard, namely, install it at a certain slope by several centimeters per meter of length. In this case, absolutely all communications will need to be hidden. The ideal place for this would be plasterboard boxes, podiums or kitchen sets.

Speaking about coordinating the transfer of sinks, it is worth considering that you do not need to develop a project to perform this operation along the "native" walls. If the transfer is planned to an adjacent or opposite wall, it will be necessary not only to develop a project, but also to legalize it in the competent authorities.

And here are some useful tips for creating a countertop for a windowsill with a sink:

  1. It is desirable that at least one window sash opens at an angle of 90 degrees. Then you can easily clean the entire window. To do this, place the sink closer to the edge and not in the center.
  2. The exception is windows with three sashes. In this case, the sink is installed opposite a blind flap, located in the center.
  3. Since there cannot be a cabinet for storing dishes above the sink near the window, it is better to place it under the sink or to the side of it. For a similar reason, a sink should be selected with a dish-drying dish.

To help the window panes absorb less water spray, it is recommended to choose a deep sink and a mixer tap with a medium spout. If possible, it is better to give preference not to the usual, but to the folding mixer, which is equipped with a bayonet mount. The cost of window sills with such mixers will be higher, but they will provide an opportunity to open wide-open windows without interference.

Tabletop under the windowsill: a variety of materials

The first step in the installation process is to determine the desired material for the countertop sills. The most common options are:

  • marble construction;
  • artificial stone product;
  • ceramic option;
  • glass sill;
  • wooden product.

Structures made of marble are resistant to mechanical damage, as well as to the effects of a humid environment and aggressive substances. At the same time, the high cost of the material is fully justified by the highest quality and reliability.

The table-top, made of artificial stones, is an affordable analogue of the marble version. The only drawback is the fragility (in comparison with the marble product).

The table top on the windowsill, which is made of ceramics, is characterized by fragility. In the process of using it, you should be extremely careful, because if objects fall on it, chips may appear that simply cannot be hidden.

Note! Despite the significant disadvantage, the ceramic countertop is easy to maintain and affordable in terms of price.

The glass structure will add style and originality to the kitchen interior, and due to the thickness of the glass, it will not be possible to break it.

If we talk about wooden window sills, it is worth noting that they can be installed only if this space will not be used in the future for the cooking process, which requires constant contact with water.

Thus, the variety of options for materials for the countertop under the windowsill is quite large. It all depends on the budget and personal preferences.

Sill height: when size really matters

When it comes to kitchen space, every centimeter matters, including the size of the windowsills. Often the height of the headset together with the table top is 0.85 m. However, sometimes it can be higher due to adjustable legs and an enlarged base. The "correct" height of the working area is considered a value equal to 15 cm from the elbow in the bend. This should be taken into account when ordering a kitchen.

Thus, if the height of the sill is approximately equal to the height of the countertop, it is best to simply continue the work area parallel to the window. In this case, the battery at the bottom can be safely left open.

Note! The width of the slopes should be taken into account when choosing a countertop by the window, which is planned for installation. In addition, the material of the performance deserves special attention.

Restricting the access of moisture to the countertop under the windowsill is important. It is not permissible for it to get wet from window condensation. However, if the problem of excess phlegm on the wall is still present, it is better to give preference to a product made of artificial stone or a beautifully beaten plastic countertop.

If the window sill is at a higher level than the countertop, the gap between the upper and lower structures is often decorated with tiles or covered with a plinth. Which option will be chosen depends only on the features of the kitchen design. Speaking of wide window sills in the interior, it is worth noting that they are made of the same material as the countertop. Moreover, they serve as additional shelves. If a decision is made to leave the window sill in its original version, it is cut to the width of the slope.

If the countertop is higher than the window sill, it is best to simply lay part of the window opening with bricks and order a smaller window. However, this solution is only suitable for private houses. As for the apartment, such an action is a violation of the law, since it entails a change in the architectural appearance of the building.

From a technical point of view, the simplest option is to build a kitchen line on top of the window sill, while leaving up to two tens of centimeters so that you can open the window sash and ventilate the room. The "groove" between furniture and glass can be closed with plant pots. It is not the most ergonomic solution, but the most economical one. There will be no need to replace the glass unit and go for tricks during the installation of furniture.

How to make a countertop with your own hands: basic secrets

When the renovation in the kitchen is nearing completion, and the window sill needs rework, the question arises of how to install the countertop. Perhaps the simplest solution would be to attach a folding table to the windowsill. This design will be characterized by mobility and compactness - if necessary, it can be folded into a narrow shelf.

Of course, such a table can be easily purchased at any specialty store. Or you can save a little and, using the detailed instructions, make the product on your own. By installing this structure flush with the window sill, you can get a completely functional space.

The following materials will come in handy to get the job done:

  • not thick plywood sheet;
  • jigsaw;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • dye;
  • primer;
  • brush;
  • matte varnish or wax;
  • level;
  • screwdriver;
  • puncher;
  • hacksaw for wood;
  • piano hinges;
  • card furniture hinges.

First of all, you have to cut the tabletop of the desired shape and size. The best option would be a semicircle or a rounded triangle. After that, the support and its base are cut out. At this stage, if you wish, you can make decorative perforations in the leg.

Then the end parts of the resulting blanks are subject to grinding, all elements are primed, and then painted and coated with wax or varnish. After that, the leg must be connected to the base with piano hinges, and the tabletop must be fixed with card hinges. After all the above steps, the support is fixed to the wall, and a tabletop is installed on it using several self-tapping screws.

Thus, the idea of turning a window sill into a worktop in many design variations is incredibly successful. Thanks to this solution, you can not only free up precious space for relaxation, eating or work, but also give style and modernity to the design of the kitchen.

KITCHEN TABLE INSTEAD OF WINDOWSILL

Kitchen design is an interesting and exciting activity. Especially when it comes to the layout and arrangement of furniture structures. One of the main features of a small kitchen is compactness and functionality. That is why you can make a nice little table from the windowsill, which will replace a heavy kitchen table.

For these purposes, during repair and finishing work, be sure to order a tabletop that will cover the window sill area and tables in the working area. In addition, such a solution will look harmonious. Space in the kitchen is saved, the kitchen looks more spacious.

So let's see what solutions the designers offer us! A window sill that blends into the table can completely replace the dining area! For me, for example, this option is more than suitable. Since we have lunch and dinner in the room, the table in the kitchen is suitable for morning coffee or lunch. And you think how it is more convenient for you. It's a good idea to make the countertop sill a little wider than usual. The result is a complete table!

Window sill and its variations - countertop, bar counter, table

In a room of any size, a rational layout is important, but in a small kitchen it is especially important. After all, it is impossible to clutter up the space in any way, and if we consider that it is necessary to place equipment, a cooking zone and a dining group in the kitchen, it becomes clear why sometimes you have to fight literally for every centimeter.

One of the most beneficial solutions is to place a countertop instead of a window sill. Indeed, often a window sill (especially if it is initially wide) takes up a lot of space, while it is not functionally used in any way. Agree, it is irrational to arrange an exhibition of plants near the window, and then huddle in the remaining area, if you can immediately competently approach the organization of the space.

A countertop window sill in the kitchen can become a full-fledged dining table or an excellent analogue of a bar counter.

Cons of a window sill converted into a table:

  • All work must be done at the repair stage even before leveling the slopes, plastering and finishing;
  • If you do not provide for the access of warm air from the battery to the window, then in winter the window will fog up, and high humidity will most likely provoke the appearance of mold, which is harmful to health, which will then be difficult to get rid of.

Table top-window sill

A full-fledged working area can be organized near the window. If the only correct solution for the available space is the location of the kitchen set against the wall with a window, then the window sill with the countertop is combined. As the designer Maria Dadiani did. Please note that the window sills in this apartment in Khrushchev were originally below the level of the headset cabinets. In order to connect them, it was required to build up the base of the window sill. The heat here comes not only from the hidden battery, but also from the insulated wall.

Such a combination is also necessary if the kitchen furniture is located along 2 or 3 kitchen walls. Then replacing the window sill with a table top allows you not to break the whole line of the headset and again creates an additional working or dining area.

The work of the master Alexander Osyk. A single table top combined the window sill with a bar counter and headset cabinets.

And here is another example of connecting floor cabinets with a window sill. Here, the window was not extended, but simply placed on the base of the beams, and the rails for the drawers were attached to the beams.

But here the master did not have to adjust the height of the window sill, in addition, he installed a curbstone under it, and covered the battery with a screen.

In order for the heat from the battery to pass better, the curbstone covering it should be with lattice facades. As shown in the photo below.

If you do not want to increase and raise the level of the window sill, or if the repair has already been done, then you can dock two tabletops of the window sill as follows.

But what if the window sill, on the contrary, is higher than the level of the pedestals? Of course, in this case, it is best to order a kitchen of a suitable height. Alternatively, lower the sill, raise the table top, or adjust the legs (if adjustable). Or you can put up with it and act like the hostess of the next kitchen - close the junction of the countertops with a corner.

On the base of the window sill, you can install a tabletop of such a width that you get a small table or a bar counter, depending on the height.

You can make such a small table. For a small kitchen, this is the best solution. The battery is covered with a screen, and the underframe is made of plasterboard.

And here are examples of a window sill - a bar from warmer countries. Note that there is no heating battery under the window and it is not difficult to install such a bar counter. And you don't need to sit comfortably and think about how to close the battery. We will have to show more ingenuity and resourcefulness in this matter. Nevertheless, some ideas can be gleaned.

DIY window sill with folding table

The countertop-sill in the kitchen can even be folding - this is an excellent solution in the case when you do not want to make repairs in the kitchen and you don’t need to connect the window sill with the countertop of the headset. These countertops are supported by two supports from below and can be easily folded if necessary so as not to interfere with the person preparing food. A folding table combined with a window sill is an ergonomic and effective solution that allows you to use a previously unused area under the window.

It can be bought, for example, in Ikea, where models are sold: Norberg, Bjursta and Norbu. This is how they look in the interior.

You can make such a simple design with your own hands. To make such a table, you will need: a piece of plywood, a jigsaw, self-tapping screws, a primer, paint, a brush / spray gun, a level, a screwdriver, a puncher, a hacksaw for wood, as well as 2 pieces of furniture card hinges. and piano hinges 1 pc.

Here is a photo instruction:

If the window sill is located below or above the limits of a reasonable level of countertop placement, then such a kitchen design would be wiser not even to consider. The optimum height for the working area is 83-93 centimeters.

There is one more essential point that needs to be taken into account. Window sashes after the installation of a new structure must open freely.

The table top should go under the frame at least a little. Its edge cut off from the side of the window and the joints are treated with sealants or protective compounds to prevent moisture from entering. This rule does not only apply to artificial stone.

The interesting design of the window sill represents its design in the form of a bench. This option is perfect for spacious kitchens with low windows. Here it is necessary to take into account at what distance the window sill is located from the floor. It should correspond to the average height of the stools, which is within 45 centimeters.

For the device of the bench, wood is chosen, and the depth of the seat is made at least 30 and no more than 45 centimeters. For safety reasons, it is recommended to install a low protective grill on the window, the design of which will correspond to the general style. A dining table is placed near the bench or left open.

There are a lot of design options for the window sill area and each of them can become exclusive.

Today, redesigning the kitchen in an apartment in order to increase its functionality is a popular trend. Many owners are looking for opportunities, interesting ideas and options on how to use the maximum square meters of usable area in order to conveniently arrange interior elements, furniture, and appliances.

This is especially true for small apartments, where every centimeter of space is valuable. But even for spacious housing, the idea of rationalization is very relevant.

One of the most successful ideas for using the usable area is the window sill countertop in the kitchen, i.e. the use of free space under the window and at the window level itself. This idea seems interesting and very practical, although it will require good planning skills and sufficient financial resources to implement it.

A window sill as a countertop is a great option for small kitchens

In an ordinary apartment in the kitchen, the window sill performs an auxiliary function, in rare cases it serves to accommodate small household appliances, but more often indoor plants or decor items. A heating radiator is located under the windowsill - it is he who becomes a real stumbling block for many rationalizers of living space.

How to properly use the space under the windowsill depends on the idea of the performer, the needs of the owners of the kitchen, and on the area, geometry and other features of the room.

Tabletop-sill as a working area

Most often, a countertop instead of a window sill in the kitchen is planned as an extension of the working area and a continuation of the usual countertop, on which food is cut during cooking, a hob is installed and a sink is mounted.

For small kitchens, this solution becomes the best way to increase the usable space and make work more convenient and comfortable. For this, the countertop sill is often made, as it were, turning into an ordinary countertop by using a common material for its manufacture.

The right amount of light will fall on the working area, and will also help you periodically distract from work

But for the implementation of this idea, a number of conditions must be met. The surface in the working area should be equal in height to the window sill, otherwise you will either have to buy new furniture or remove the old window sill and install a completely new base for the table top in its place.

If it is planned to place floor boxes under the windowsill for storing utensils, dishes and other things, then you will have to think about where to put the heating radiator and how to solve the problem of heating the room.

How can you use the area near the window?

When expanding the working space, a worktop with a window sill can be not just a flat cutting surface, but a full-fledged continuation of the functional part of the kitchen. If necessary, you can install a sink in it, which will allow the hostess to wash the dishes with great pleasure, admiring the view from the window. The advantage of this solution is also better natural lighting of the working area.

But in this case, you need to take care of an additional light source above the sink or cutting surface at night. After all, washing dishes in the evening or preparing dinner, hiding the light of a single lamp on the ceiling with your back, is quite inconvenient.

A good solution would be to install spotlights (spots) above the windowsill in the window opening, or several lamps on clothespins, which can be freely moved and removed if necessary.

As for the gas or electric hob, it is extremely rarely mounted directly under the window, because it is technically difficult and requires coordination with utilities.

Therefore, it is better to leave the stove in the same place, and use the new meters of usable area near the window for washing, a cutting surface or placing dishes, a microwave oven and other functional items on it.

It is better to place the place for eating away from the stove and sink.

What to do with the battery under the windowsill?

Moving plumbing units is troublesome and quite costly, so many owners agree that it is better to completely remove the battery from under the window, and install a warm floor as an alternative to traditional room heating.

This is much easier to do, especially if you have been planning to redecorate your kitchen floors for a long time. By removing the radiators under the window, you can freely place a narrow cabinet or cabinet in the resulting small niche, the top of which will serve as a countertop defense.

But in a number of cases, a newly-made countertop from a window sill does not require such serious redevelopments involving engineering systems. If the kitchen is spacious enough, then all functional pieces of furniture can be placed against the far (perpendicular to the window) wall, and a battery or a small air heater can be left under the countertop.

The batteries can be hidden under the windowsill if you make it quite wide

Manufacturing methods

There are several ways how to install the countertop in place of the former window sill so that it goes into the working area. It all depends on the area of the working area, the geometry of the relative position of the window sill and furniture and other factors.

Most often, for the production of a common tabletop, two pieces of flat material are taken, which are installed on supports perpendicularly at right angles to each other. This is the most convenient and quickest option for expanding the countertop under the window.

The material for the manufacture of piecework tabletops can be:

  • natural stone (marble, granite);
  • fake diamond;
  • solid wood;
  • durable chipboard with a thickness of at least 3 cm.

The latter option is the most economical, but requires more careful surface finishing. A practical and affordable choice is corduroy, which can imitate various natural textures with high accuracy.

Natural and artificial stone does not require any finishing, but wood needs to be treated with waterproof varnish, because constant contact of the countertop with moisture is expected.

An example of a solid sheet of countertop in the kitchen

For more designer interiors with a kitchen window sill that merges into the worktop, a solid sheet of flat material is often used, which is cut in such a way that, after installation, the worktop looks monolithic - without seams.

This option is rational for a small kitchen, where the window is located close to the work area. In this case, you can make not a right angle, but a rounded or wavy one. It looks pretty, especially if the surface of the countertop has a glossy sheen and a bright paint finish.

We use it as a dining area

This is a less common design decision when using space near the window. But, nevertheless, a countertop instead of a window sill in the kitchen as an impromptu dining table or bar counter is an excellent option for rationalizing the room.

It is suitable for both small and spacious kitchens, and can act as an independent design move. If you choose the right material, color, and combination with other pieces of furniture, then the countertop window sill in the dining area will look very stylish and unusual.

The dining area near the window is suitable for families with a small number of people

This kitchen design with a countertop sill has several advantages over using a conventional dining table:

  • saves space in the kitchen, allowing you to move freely;
  • provides additional aesthetic pleasure during meals, when you can admire the view outside the window during breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The window sill in the dining area, turning into the tabletop, can be made in two versions: deaf (closed) - when users sit facing the window, and open, when the tabletop is located perpendicular to the window sill in the form of an island element.

Depending on the wishes of the owners, any option can be used, each of which has its own advantages.

Island top

The first method of positioning the countertop for the dining area by the window is convenient for a small family of two or three people, and allows you to save free space to the maximum. An insulated tabletop that merges into a window sill allows chairs to be placed on either side to accommodate more guests.

The open version of the countertop near the window can be used as an impromptu bar counter, if you place a compact box under it, special shelves for storing bottles with collection wine or a mini-bar.

Conclusion

As you can see, the idea of making a countertop out of the window sill in most versions is very successful, allowing not only to free up additional space for work or eating, but also to make the kitchen design more modern and stylish.

A window sill will help to increase the working space in the kitchen.

Window sills in the kitchen are usually used as a winter garden or small vegetable garden. Indeed, you can grow flowers, onions or dill on it.

The winter garden will decorate the interior of the kitchen and make the air in the room much cleaner.

However, when the kitchen is very small, then you should not waste the area. An ordinary window sill can be turned into a work surface, bar counter.

A functional countertop sill in the kitchen can even replace the dining table.

Advantages and disadvantages

What is convenient for a countertop instead of a window sill in the kitchen? Let's consider the main advantages of such an interior solution.

  • Saving space.

On the countertop windowsill, you can store cereals, appliances or dishes. In this case, the kitchen countertop will be able to replace a full-fledged table, which will significantly save the kitchen space.

It is also used in food preparation as a surface for cutting vegetables, sausages or fruits.

  • Ease of installation.

Such a product is easy to make with your own hands. To do this, you should only follow the instructions that are presented in this article.

The installation does not require the use of any complicated fixtures or expensive equipment.

  • Aesthetic pleasure.

A large tabletop instead of a window sill will give the hostess the opportunity to enjoy the cooking process as much as possible.

During it, you will be able to observe a pleasant view from the window, and not just an empty wall.

  • Saving electricity.

It is no secret that the cost of electricity today is quite high. Therefore, you need to use every opportunity to save money. The work surface on the window does not require additional lighting.

In the daytime, you can cook on it without turning on the electric light.

  • Unlimited design possibilities.

The original solution is very relevant in our time. It makes the kitchen more modern and functional.

The area of use of such a zone is practically unlimited.

  • Low cost.

If you use available materials for installation, and the installation process itself is performed independently, then the cost price of such a product will be quite low.

For hinged windows, it is important that the table top does not interfere with the opening of the sash.

Of course, such a design solution for the kitchen also has some disadvantages.

Firstly, it is categorically not suitable for people who are prone to frequent interior changes.

Mounting and dismantling countertop window sills is not an easy task.

Secondly, you will have to devote more time to the choice of curtains. They should be non-soiled and water-repellent. If you do not want to "bother", then in the kitchen curtains can not be used.

The new window and neat slopes will look good.

Role in the interior

In addition to functionality, the countertop will play a significant role in the interior of the kitchen and windows. To make it fit perfectly into the overall design, you need to follow some guidelines:

Varieties of products

Countertops can be categorized according to several criteria:

  • F functional purpose;
  • The form.

By functional purposecan be a bar counter, a work area, a table or a sink.

According to its shape, it is divided into: rectangular, round, oval or irregular.

Important! The most functional solution for a kitchen is a counter combined with a window sill. In this case, it will be able to completely replace the work surface and dining table, and under the counter itself you can install appliances or shelves.

This option will save space.

You should choose the type of product based on your own needs and technical capabilities. For example, if the communications are located far from the window, then it will not work to install the sink.

In order for the window sill to harmoniously fit into the interior of the kitchen, you can think over the design of the headset so that the countertop becomes a continuation of the work surface.

Choosing a material

To make a countertop with your own hands, you first need to choose raw materials. Let's consider their main types and characteristics.

  1. Marble.

This is an expensive option. However, if financial capabilities permit, then a marble countertop is ideal. Marble is resistant to any kind of damage. It will be able to serve for many years and will not lose its original external data. Marble in the interior is a sign of the great taste of the owners of the house.

Previously, such a stone was used only in the homes of rich and noble people.

  1. Fake diamond.

It is a cheap alternative to marble. The artificial stone countertop will withstand any load. It will be resistant to water and high temperatures. However, the appearance of the surface may deteriorate over time.

Artificial stone is not as resistant to external damage by sharp objects as, for example, marble.

  1. Ceramic tile.

This raw material also belongs to relatively inexpensive materials. The tile is resistant to high temperatures and water, but it can be damaged by a heavy object.

The cracks in the tiles cannot be repaired, so they will have to be replaced.

  1. Glass.

By choosing glass, you can make the kitchen interior original and unique. Glass is not very popular, because many people are afraid that it will not withstand daily stress. However, there is nothing to be afraid of! Modern glasses for such purposes have a thick and dense structure.

According to their characteristics, they can even be compared with an artificial stone.

  1. Natural wood.

If the table will not be used as a work surface, then natural wood is a suitable option.

As a dining table, a tree can last for many years if properly cared for.

  1. Chipboard or MDF.

They can be used in the kitchen if the window sill will not be used as a work surface or sink.

You can make a product yourself from these raw materials.

To decide which of the materials is right for you, you need to take into account some points. If the table will be used as a work area, then it is best to give preference to marble, stone, tiles or glass. These raw materials will be able to withstand high temperatures and will not lose their external properties with daily use.

In the case of using the window sill as a bar or dining table, you can choose any of the options considered.

Step-by-step instructions for installing chipboard and ceramic tile worktops

  1. Purchase of material.

For such a window to come out, you need to buy the following accessories: chipboard, ceramic tiles, silicone, adhesive tape, ready-made table legs, foam.

When you have all the necessary tools and materials, you can start work.

  1. Markup.

The table should be installed immediately after installing a new window. If the window and sill have already been installed, then you will have to first remove the old products. Dismantling is simple and requires only the use of male physical strength. When the dismantling work is over, you need to measure the length of the concrete base at the window and decide on the width.

If you want a small table that only hangs slightly from the concrete base, then the legs are not needed.

  1. Preparing the board.

Chipboard must be at least 12 mm thick. The board must be cut exactly according to measurements. The accuracy should be as high as possible, so it is better to pre-mark and check everything several times.

Sand the edges and entire surface of the countertop with a plane and sandpaper (at least 60 grit).

  1. Surface treatment.

The ends of the board must be treated with silicone in two layers, and the bottom surface must be pasted over with packing tape.

Be sure to check the plane with a building level.

  1. Mounting.

Having installed the stove, all holes must be sealed with polyurethane foam. When installing, do not forget about the level. The window top should be flat. If she has legs, then they need to be screwed in advance.

Wait for the foam to set and seal the seams between the slopes and the windowsill.

  1. Facing.

You can decorate the countertop with ceramic tiles. It should be laid with minimum gaps. The gaps can then be painted in the color of the slabs.

As you can see, assembling the countertop with your own hands is quite simple.

In total, the work takes several hours. It is even easier to install a product made of marble or stone, because they come ready-made. They only need to be installed on a concrete base near the window and carefully secured.

In order for the product to serve for a long time, it must be properly maintained.

First, the surface of the new window sill needs to be cleaned regularly. Especially if it is used daily for cooking.

Wash the product with soapy water and a soft sponge.

Secondly, you need to periodically pay attention to the grouting joints. When installing ceramic tiles, it is impossible to do without seams. During operation, the seams quickly accumulate dirt, and disease-causing mold often develops in this place.

Seams should be cleaned with a special product at least once a week.

Thirdly, you need to pay special attention to any cracks and damage. If the tile is cracked, then it should be replaced immediately. Bacteria can form in the crack.
