  • Cultural activities. People have always strived for something beautiful. By creating something good, a person emphasizes his love and peacefulness.
  • Any expressive forms. With the development of society and aesthetic knowledge, art can be called absolutely any activity that, using special means, expresses some kind of meaning.

This term is broad enough. If it is interpreted on the scale of the entire human society, then it is a special means for cognition or reflection of the surrounding world, spirituality and consciousness of the individual. There is practically no person who could not give him an explanation. Listen to your inner world and define what art is for you. History of the emergence of art

According to one theory, for the first time man began to engage in creativity during a primitive society. This is witnessed by rock inscriptions. These were the first mass forms of art. They were applied mainly for practical use. About 40 thousand years ago, art became an independent way to explore the world. It was represented by various rituals, musical compositions, choreography, body jewelry, images on rocks, trees and skins of killed animals.

In the primitive world, art performed the function of transmitting information. People could not communicate using language, so they conveyed information through creativity. Therefore, art for the people of those times was an integral part of existence. To apply images, objects from the surrounding world and various colors from them were used.

Art in the ancient world

It was in ancient civilizations such as Egypt, India, Rome and so on that the foundations of the creative process were laid. Even then, people began to think about whether a person needs art. Each developed center of civilization had its own unique style, which survived for many centuries and did not change. At this time, the first works of artists had already begun to be created. The ancient Greeks portrayed the human body best of all. They could correctly depict muscles, posture and respect the proportions of the body.

Art in the Middle Ages

People of these times focused their gaze on biblical stories and spiritual truths. In the Middle Ages, they no longer asked the question of whether a person needed art, because the answer was obvious. Renaissance and the modern world

What is the art of photographs and paintings for?

If this is the consumption of material and spiritual goods, then nothing has changed. And in the village the same thing - ditties, epics wandered from parents to children, and everyone knew their local songs, fairy tales. Everything. This was the mass culture of that time, just for some reason, many are afraid to call a spade a spade. Now it is generally accepted that this is sacred, but it is just the music of that time, like literature, architecture, etc. Some of this, of course, entered the golden fund of mankind, but not all.

So art and the era of consumption have always been, it's just that civilization does not stand still, and ideas, reasons, shell are changing.

On June 20, I have a retrospective opening at the Russian Museum, and this is flattering. This has absolutely nothing to do with art.

Plains pride, but does not apply to art.

Generally speaking, the phenomenon of exhibitions arose at a time when art had lost its significance - Michelangelo, working on the Sistine Chapel, was not burdened by the lack of exhibitions, and Mantegna wrote his "Triumphs" for ten years, living at the court of dEste, and about the fact that it was he who wrote, no one knew. Moreover, these "Triumphs", not appreciated by the dEste family, gathered dust unnecessarily until they were acquired by the English Charles II and taken to Hampton Court, where they were hung in a dark pavilion and where almost no one sees them to this day.

Let me ask you: you know about the painting "Triumphs" by Andrea Mantegna, I'm almost sure that none of you even know about the existence of this work - and this is a polyptych of nine canvases, each six meters long, and this is one of the most significant works of the Renaissance ... I'm not exaggerating, this is not in order to achieve reader's surprise, it just is: Mantegna worked for ten years on a thing that clarifies Plato's concept - he finished it, died, the painting was not needed, then the vain Englishman bought it, hung it in country estate, and the painting was forgotten.

But the picture did not cease to exist and give its energy to the world. The picture is hidden, and we do not see it, but the effect of its presence in the world is enormous.

Art exists in order to give our not always meaningful being the energy of authenticity. It is the kind of energy that gives people the ability to have compassion for others; to experience feelings that were previously unknown to them; to compare their inherent emotions with incomprehensible emotions of their own kind, to feel the world around them more sharply. This is a kind of recognition of the world, however, this is not the knowledge that science gives people, it is rather an ecstatic experience. Art condenses this experience and gives it to the world - moreover, true art has the ability to produce this action constantly over the centuries. Here, Mantegna's painting exists, and this action takes place regularly, regardless of whether someone sees the painting or not.

You see, I am sure that the emanation of the spirit is an objective physical phenomenon.
You probably paid attention to the groups of tourists who march through the Hermitage or the Louvre without turning their heads in the direction of painting - it is customary to mock at such.

I think that they are laughing at them in vain: these people receive an incredible charge of art, a powerful injection of the authenticity of being. Pictures give them their energy, even if people are not looking at the pictures.

The need for art exhibitions arose in a society that began to produce one-day crafts instead of art designed for eternity. Mantegna wrote for the ages (like Plato, whom he deciphered), but the journalist writes on the topic of the day, the verse composer for the day of the fireman, and the modern artist, if he does not show his works before lunch, will cease to be modern, that is the disaster. ... The risk of “not having time to declare oneself”, being late with self-expression, appeared in a shattered consciousness; it is a consequence of the mental disorder that the virus of journalism has instilled throughout society.

Art, like life itself, either exists or does not, and the so-called "truth of art" consists in the fact that this truth does not need to be proved. The desire to correspond to the "truth of the moment", the so-called "actuality" - is already insane that the moment, by definition, can never be right. Butterfly exhibitions are held all over the world every day, fashion parades shake the enlightened humanity every season, and magazine zoils have to joke and snap their teeth anew every day. This is guard activity, it takes place in the foyer of the theater, but art itself is about something else.

One of my teachers was a Moscow artist Yevgeny Andreevich Dodonov, who died in the late 70s. He is a significant Russian artist, although you have never heard of him. However, you haven't heard of Mantegna's Triumphs either.

Evgeny Andreevich outwardly resembled Zabolotsky: a neat man in a jacket, round glasses, he wore boots at home. There are people (university professors or retired military men) who maintain their bearing after retirement - that's what he was. He walked through the rooms of a block kopeck piece near the Kievsky railway station with a leisurely calm step - always with a straight back, always in polished boots.

He did not drink alcohol, did not smoke, did not know how to use foul language - against the colorful background of the artists of those years, he looked like an accountant. Then (by the way, always), artists emphasized the originality of their nature with their appearance, and abuse and drunkenness were a necessary decoration - and the scenery occupied three quarters of the stage. However, soon there was an indulgence: the genre of performance made everyday ugliness in creativity.
Dodonov did not like any of this and did not know how, and could not enter any freedom-loving company.

He did not want to join any company. He was a stubborn draftsman - all his life he painted what happened to him and his generation: he painted camps and shipments, queues for food, strange scenes in provincial squares, crying people, refugees, beggars. Dodonov spent more than ten years in the camp, left after the war, and in the following years he told what happened to the country.

He drew on paper - in pencil and tempera - for the reason that an easel and canvas would not fit in the room. Dodonov drew for a long time, savoring strange details, sketching out the details, and then folding the pictures under the bed. I didn't expect any exhibitions or sales. Dodonov's style most likely should be called "expressionism", if we bear in mind that the line is tense, and the characters' features are interpreted grotesquely. All such definitions are conditional, and the phenomenon of expressionism in Russian art is determined inaccurately. In essence, expressionism inherits stylistic techniques from icon painting: in the Russian case from the Novgorod icon, and in the Spanish case, for example, it is from Greek icon painting, through the Cretan El Greco. Filonov and Goncharova were Russian expressionists. Chagall, Falk, Drevin - but, I repeat, the point is not in the reception, not in the course of the hand. Iconic zeal, from which this style originated, is inherent in some, but not in others: we with equal grounds call the expressionist Van Gogh, Georges Rouault and Egon Schiele. Dodonov was a devout, fanatical person, and this is all the more surprising - that in everyday life he was restrained and boringly neat. But after all, Van Gogh's paintings are placed in neat frames.

Very often we see just the opposite examples: a stormy personality, producing a crushing decorative effect with its appearance, in reality does not create absolutely nothing - and Evgeny Andreevich was a well-mannered person and behaved with restraint, but his paintings were extremely stormy.

Posthumously he had one exhibition - at the Tretyakov Gallery, in 2000. We looked, even amazed, many liked it, but forgot right there - the "truth of the moment" was in overcoming the crisis of 1998, in new loans, in the arrival of Putin, in accordance with world brands and trends - such passions, you will not be afraid! Exhibitions of contemporary artists rolled through the galleries of the world, this is such an incessant marathon of ambitions - to be in time there, and then here: Venice, Basel, London, rather, those who did not have time are late! What does Dodonov have to do with it? And so his things lay under the bed. True, his paintings were recently acquired by the Volga Picture Gallery, a new museum has appeared; I am proud to have contributed to this. The exposition will immediately include about twenty of Dodonov's items.

However, this does not mean anything either. They got it by a miracle, they might not have noticed - after all, he was not a member of the famous groups, he did not meet the right people at the right time.

It is customary to say: his time will come. This is nonsense, don't believe it. This should never be a consolation. The time may or may not come - understood as a moment, as relevance, as an article in a newspaper clicker, as "fifteen minutes of glory" - such a time may never come. But such a time does not matter. The artist's time, having come once, always abides - art is in no hurry, it just is, it remains, even forgotten, even unknown, it changes the world - this is its strength.

This power is invincible.

Why do you need art? Some will say - for relaxation, others - for pleasure, and still others - for the artist's self-expression. Of course, this is partly true, but only partly. Art is, first of all, a document of the era; it reflects the thoughts, aspirations, faith, and hope of a generation that passes on its message to future generations. At the same time, art is a special way to express an idea, verbally, visually, musically, so that it can be heard, perceived and not lost in time. And a person from another era is able to understand and decipher this captured image, written text. We can say that art serves as a conduit for transmitting ideas to a new generation. A striking example of this is the Gospel, which is not only a record of the Word of God, but also a great work of verbal art that has inspired many artists, poets, and composers over the centuries. We can say that the Gospel text was created by people in synergy with God, it is divinely inspired. But to a certain extent, art becomes art when inspiration from above is present in it, because a person has been given this gift from God - the ability to create. The only question is what idea, thought guides the artist. What does he want to say to his contemporaries and future generations? Will he leave a testimony of faith and love or hate and destruction?

With the advent of man, art also appears on earth. We find images on the walls of caves, stone statues and clay figurines, painted pottery and bone products dating back to the prehistoric period, when there was no writing. All this suggests that ancient people sought to create not only utilitarian things useful and necessary for survival, but also that which brings joy, decorates life, teaches something, lifts a person above the routine of existence.

The ability to be creative is what distinguishes humans from animals. At first glance, we find something similar in nature: birds build nests, beavers build huts, the social structure of bees and ants is striking in its organization. But over the millennia, beaver dwellings and bird nests have not changed in their arrangement, they have not turned into architecture with changing styles, which is striking in beauty, and not only habitable. The technology for making honey by bees and the arrangement of anthills also do not change or improve. The instinct put in by God does not develop, but works always and everywhere in the same way, while a person is capable of developing his talents, he is constantly looking for something new and trying to create something that has not yet existed before him. This property makes him related to God, who creates the world out of nothing and creates everything new.

It was God the Creator who put into man the ability to create, we are created in His image and likeness. God is the greatest Artist, in Greek "creator" - "poet", "poet". God creates the world according to the laws of beauty and harmony, writes it as a wonderful poem, creates it as a magnificent architecture, as a grandiose musical symphony. And God admired this wonderful world as a work of art: "And God saw that it was very good!" And God created man in order to have someone with whom to rejoice at the beauty of creation, so that there is someone who can appreciate this beauty, who can preserve and cultivate it, continue and develop, comprehend and sing!

Art, no doubt, was born in paradise, although we do not know what it was. But it is clear that man could not help but admire the wisdom of God. One can imagine that Adam, like David later, exclaimed: “How many are Thy works, O Lord! Thou hast made all things wisely; the earth is full of your works! " (Ps 103: 24). And if the creation glorifies the Creator, then the crown of creation, the man created to sing Him, had to become the choir director, the conductor of the great sounding universe.

But it so happened that Adam did not fulfill the mission entrusted to him, lost paradise, lost the opportunity to contemplate God face to face, while he did not cease to feel the harmony of the world and hear the music of the spheres, did not lose the ability to create. But his art has become in many ways nostalgia for the lost paradise. Moving away from God and enslaving creatures, man began to feel the need for creativity as self-expression, it became the cry of his soul, cry, prayer. He discovered the cognitive possibilities of creativity and began to develop the communicative functions of art. But often he used his divine abilities for the benefit of himself, moving away from God. Of course, from time to time a longing for God broke through in art, a desire to see God, to get closer to Him. And this gave birth to great works of art. However, having lost the knowledge of God, a person refined his imagination, invented God or gods, tried to break into a paradise closed to him with the help of art, endowing it with magical power, sometimes bordering on infernal spheres. Like everything else in the world after the Fall, art acquired a duality: it could both lead to God and lead away from Him.

But God, knowing this, began to educate His people, protecting them from dangers. The second commandment of the Decalogue, forbidding to depict God in any image, because God is above all created, conceivable and depicted, has set a kind of fence for human creativity. This showed God's concern for man so that he would not fall into idolatry. This commandment does not deny art, God does not take away creativity and the ability to create beauty from a person, but teaches us to see the truth in beauty. The Bible says that God Himself gave instructions on how to create the tabernacle and the Temple, how to decorate them, what patterns to weave and what precious stones to lay out the clothes of the high priests. And the ancient Jews learned to serve God through the art. Divine services, musical instruments, numerous choirs - all this undoubtedly belongs to the field of art, and all this is successfully developing among the people of God. But the most amazing phenomenon in Jewish culture was David the Psalmist, an example of high art, perfect creativity, which is beautiful in form and deep in content and has inspired poets for thousands of years. The Psalms testify to the deep faith of the Jews, and this has been passed down from generation to generation right up to our time. There is an example of pure poetry in the Bible - this is the Song of Songs, a lyric poem about the love of a young man and a girl. It is later that interpreters and sages will read it allegorically, as a story about the relationship between the soul and God, Christ and the Church, but initially it is still a poem about simple human love, written in an amazing syllable, with vivid metaphors and a poignant plot.

There are many different genres in the Bible that reflect various forms of literary art: historical chronicles and parables, rhetoric and epic, drama and tragedy, proverbs and sayings, crying and even elements of humor, etc. Such a genre variety of the Book of Books suggests that the Jewish people were undoubtedly talented and that God gave their talents to manifest and develop.

But why is all this to God and why to man? What is art for? The Bible, of course, is a divine message to humanity, transmitted through God's chosen people to the whole world. This message was formed over the centuries, formed gradually, accumulated, first transmitted through oral tradition, so that from generation to generation the memory of the great deeds of God was preserved. Then this legend was written down, now it is being read and comprehended. But after all, ideally, all art is like this - it is a message from one generation to another, to the future, this is a message from one nation to another, one person to another person. We talked about preliterate eras, it is through art that we learn what we lived, what we believed in, how ancient people understood the world. We also learn about the life of disappeared peoples, for example, the Maya and Aztecs in South America, from their art, exploring the excavations of cities, pyramidal temples, bizarre images on reliefs, etc. Yes, and the epochs closer to us convey their message to us through paintings, sculptures, verbal and musical creativity. This is a message, and an exchange of gifts, education of the soul, and sometimes a revelation. If it were not for Bach's music, how would we have understood to what height prayer can ascend ?! If it had not been for Dante's "Divine Comedy", we would not have thought about the paths of human souls, carrying with them the burden of their sins, and how great is God's mercy, which opens the path of redemption. Some works are easy for us to understand, and we immediately perceive the idea embedded in them, some keep a riddle that whole generations are trying to solve, such as the smile of the Mona Lisa, while others cause fierce controversy, like Malevich's Black Square. If he uses the gift not for good, but for evil, he will become an enemy of God and destroyer of the world. Art is a school of humanity, but education in this school occurs not so much through the mind as through the feelings, through the education of the soul. Even controversial art makes us think about ourselves and the world in which we live. The main thing is to learn to see and perceive, to hear through the voices of the earthly voice of the Creator, and through the images created by people, to be able to see the image of God. Sometimes you need great art that can touch the deepest strings of our soul, so that we understand some truth. It is no coincidence that the Lord resorted to parables, explaining the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, and these were bright beautiful images presented with the grace of a true poet: "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a net ... like leaven ... like a mustard seed, etc."

So why do you need art? One wise man said this: "Art is not salvation, but a wise staff for those who follow the path of salvation."

Previously, creative activity in schools was rather limited. Of course, concerts were regularly organized on their own, school amateur performances, singing, dancing and even KVN. But as a discipline, art criticism appeared in schools relatively recently. And even then, not in all schools. Of the subjects on which applied art is studied, drawing and music have always been. Why do you need to study art at school? The well-known definition of art as a unique, author's form of displaying the surrounding reality, a little baffles those who hear it for the first time. Indeed, at first it seems that in the paintings of the Impressionists there is little from reality, in singing there is little from the sounds of everyday speech. However, this is how it is. Art is a form of life, simply transformed, sometimes utterly, by the inner eye of the artist.

They say that the left hemisphere is responsible for logic and science, and the right hemisphere is responsible for creativity. Maybe it is so, but this does not mean that everything is concentrated on the left side of the brain correctly, logical, the process of thought in general, and on the right side there are only naked emotions, empty ecstasy of the creator. No, regular classes of creative activity develop both hemispheres at once, teach and think, and express, and analyze what is available, and come up with your own. After all, there is no real art in which only expression rules the ball without the participation of thought and its own, albeit unusual, but logic. So, creativity lessons teach develop the child's brain comprehensively, make him a harmonious personality.

In addition, art classes make a person's nature more sensitive, subtle - therefore, more capable of experiencing good and kind feelings, sometimes inaccessible to a poorly educated person.
