Tom's life is quite prosperous, because he is well fed, dressed, and regularly attends school. For America in the mid-19th century, this is a great achievement. However, Tom is not entirely happy with life. He, so to speak, lacks romance: he dreams of travel, he embarks on some kind of adventure and gets into trouble because of this.

In a provincial American town, practically nothing important and interesting happens: people are always busy with their petty problems, they have practically no hobbies, and they are also quite religious - they study the Bible here literally every day, including holidays and weekends. It is clear that such a smart teenager like Tom will constantly get bored and try to dispel the dullness of life by any means.

He also has a good friend named Huckleberry Finn, he is the real embodiment of that very romance. Huck does not go to school at all, and lives in a barrel (just like Diogenes), smokes a pipe. She and Tom get along well and together indulge in unusual, in their opinion, adventures. But other children are forbidden by their parents to play with Huck, because such a guy can teach them bad things. This is a real "informal" for his city.

Tom always wants to stand out, to do something better than others. But ordinary actions (for example, studying) will not work on peers. And he invents his own ways. So, when he was forced to paint the fence, he convinced the boys that it was very important work which he cannot trust to anyone; and when they began to ask him to paint a little, he began to offer them this job for money. It turned out that the surrounding teenagers worked for him, and even paid for it. From here, by the way, the expression "Tom Sawyer's business" was born.

Nothing boyish is alien to Tom Sawyer, including love. He is friends with Becky (Rebecca Thatcher), a girl from a neighbor's family. More precisely, she tries to be friends, wants to impress her with something. But Becky doesn't like this guy, no matter how hard he tries. Tom does not give up and once directly offers the girl an engagement. She did not like it all the more, they quarrel and disagree.
Tom, apparently, was very offended, so much so that he decided to become a pirate. Huck willingly supported him in this. Young pirates go to the cemetery at night, where they saw a fight three people, which led to the murder of one of them. The boys realized that the games end here and serious things begin. They decided to return home and not tell anyone about what they saw.

Aunt Polly notices that something is wrong with her nephew. She thinks that he is ill, and she is trying to cure him. In fact, Tom is embarrassed that there is a lot of talk about the murder, an investigation has begun, which has not led to anything yet, and he himself was a witness and knows who the killer is. To cope with his condition, he continues to go to school, as usual, to study well, again tries to make friends with Becky, although again to no avail. This incident, however, led to positive consequences - Tom "posthumously" fell in love with Becky, for whom he became a hero.

Then comes the vacation, during which Becky leaves town and Tom falls ill with measles. He is gradually recovering, but life is not yet happy with him - there is no girlfriend, there is nothing to do in the city. Nevertheless, he was once again lucky to become a hero, now for real. He spoke at the trial, where he honestly told about the murder in the cemetery, which saved the alcoholic Maffy Potter from an unfair sentence - one of the participants in the fight, who, however, was not the killer. Now, however, Injun Joe, who was the culprit, may take revenge, and Tom is afraid of that. The fear was short-lived, and the boys again embarked on adventure - this time they wanted to find the treasure. They found it and decided to hide it better. However, later they did not find the treasure in the place where they buried them, and tried to find them in the hotel room, which was rented by Injun Joe.

Later, Tom accidentally discovers where the Indian hid the gold. It happened on a steamer during a holiday to which he and Becky were invited. The guys quietly escape from the steamer and hide in caves, where they got lost due to carelessness and cannot find a way out. When the children run out of food, Tom tries to find a way out of the cave and notices a light ahead. But when he gets to the source of the light, it turns out that it is Injun Joe holding a candle, checking his treasure. Tom and Becky run away in horror and find a way out, which they fill up with a stone. Now Joe will die of hunger, and the gold will go to them. Tom even a little sorry for this Indian. Children will become very rich for their age, but the adventure does not end - they want to create a gang noble robbers like Robin Hood or Timurovtsev. Tom says that Huck is a rich man himself. He dumps sacks of gold in front of the widow's guests: half Sawyer, half Finn! The money was counted.
