Johnny Depp celebrates his 55th birthday on June 9, but the current state of his career is not conducive to holiday cake-eating. 10-15 years ago, he was considered the most popular and gifted actor of his generation. Now you can no longer say about this with the former confidence, and the fault is not at all age. The scandalous divorce from Amber Heard, the ruinous lifestyle, the box office and artistic disasters that fill his late filmography - what's going on?

It all started so well

In his youth, Depp fled like fire from the image of a hero-lover and a sex symbol, in which he was turned by the role of a cop-schoolboy in 21 Jump Street (full-length remakes of this series in Russia are published under the name Macho and Botan). Much more he liked to position himself in the manner of a countercultural rock star, keeping himself apart from the mainstream. Hollywood dreamed of sticking a gun into Johnny's hands and making him a courageous macho, but he preferred to play vulnerable madmen, rebels and outcasts. He was named in Interview with a Vampire, Legends of Autumn and Speed ​​(these roles were willingly picked up by Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Keanu Reeves), but Depp was looking for himself in auteur cinema in the company of early Burton, Jarmusch, Kusturica and Gilliam. Occasionally, for the sake of variety, he even agreed to the roles of ordinary people, as in the crime drama "Donnie Brasco" with Al Pacino.

For a couple of years in a row, analysts have recognized Johnny as the most overpaid performer, but the producers still continue to believe in him. However, now out of harm's way, they are trying to use the problem star as a secondary part of the ensemble, as, for example, in Murder on the Orient Express or in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
