There are 2 ways to install skirting boards: to the floor and to the walls. The choice is due to the material of the floor covering or slats, fastening technology. The walls must be leveled before installation. It is important to treat the skirting boards themselves with a decorative and protective composition: varnish, oil, tinting, etc.

Features of work with plastic skirting boards

Practical and reliable PVC slats, made from the prototype of natural decorations, will not be demolished. They will easily fit into the interior with elements, and. PVC slats are easy to cut and press against uneven surfaces. They are highly durable and resistant to temperature changes. They are light in weight and low in price.

Their installation is carried out using clips. Decorative fasteners of 3 types act as auxiliary fasteners: docking, internal, end.

Wooden skirting board options

Installation of plastic skirting boards

How to fix plastic skirting boards to the floor? Laying is carried out from the doorway, taking into account the distance for joining. The clips are pressed against the perpendicular surface by scrolling the screws. The nail recesses must be fitted with dowels in advance. They are complemented by an external polymer finish. Inserting a strip with clips is called “flush mounting”.

The plastic strips can be installed using glue and self-tapping screws that can be rolled in a soft material. Hats are masked with rubber tires.

PVC profiles with channels for communication wiring, plugs and corners are equipped with grooves for fixing the edge of soft floor coverings. Installation on liquid nails is possible.

MDF skirting boards: installation methods

Skirting boards laminated with foil, aluminum or veneer can imitate any surface: marble, wood, gloss.

For decorating cuts and corners, the package includes “corners” and end caps, which facilitates multiple use.

Materials that will be needed when installing skirting boards:

  • Hacksaw;
  • Hammer;
  • Construction tape;
  • Liquid Nails;
  • Nail gun.

Decorating floors with MDF skirting boards is carried out with staples in the form of hooks, on which the strips are then put on. This is due to the increased fragility of the material.

Attach the skirting board carefully

The correctness of the calculation of the plinth

How to attach skirting boards to the floor and at the same time use the material correctly? 2 m is added to the perimeter of the room. The result is divided by the length of one plinth. The latter figure equates to 2.5 m, but standards may change.

Other fixing materials:

  • Corner joints are equal to the number of joints of adjacent products. They correspond to the number of corners in the room.
  • Docking fasteners are used in cases where the length of one wall is greater than the size of the profile tape;
  • Plugs that are installed on both sides of the door (right and left). The number of doorways is directly proportional to the number of end components.

Laying veneered battens is a delicate process

The veneer finish consists of a spruce or pine base and a thin layer of precious wood. Fasteners are made on glue or anchor plates (not whimsical to the shape of the surface). The semi-matt varnish finish is suitable for parquet and solid floorboards.

Application technique

  1. After marking the points for the installation of the anchor plates (50 cm between the fasteners), drill holes in the places of the marks and hammer in the dowels.
  1. The plates are attached to the wall with self-tapping screws, the position of the anchor teeth, on which the plinth is fixed, is set at an angle of 90 ° in relation to its fibers.

Attention! Parquet pins can damage the veneer, so their use is excluded!

Secure the skirting board

Wooden corners

On the question: "How to fix skirting boards to the floor?" it is worth noting that the final finishing is carried out with wooden slats, plastic (PVC) or MDF. Natural solid wood planks are ideal for all types of flooring, but its relatively high price implies installation on parquet flooring. For this, triangles made of wood are used: oak, alder, cedar, pine, etc. European models are equipped with cable routing accessories.

Installation of wood planks on liquid nails

The fixation process starts from an angle; when joining, an angle of 45 ° is formed. After applying liquid nails to the place where the decorative product adheres to the wall, the product is firmly pressed down with a load. The joints are tightly connected. The following measurements and cuts of wood material fill in the rest of the perimeter (clockwise).

Professional builders prefer to secure the process with parquet studs with small caps (1.5 mm). Using a thin doboinik, they recessed the studs in the solid wood. Defects formed on the skirting board can be easily hidden with a filler of the appropriate shade.

Flexible skirting boards are laid near columns or rounded walls. They are equipped with a sealed foil. Solidification of soft laths occurs on contact with air.

If necessary, hide the wires in the plinth

Is it better to fix it - to the floor or to the wall?

To reduce labor costs when fixing skirting boards to perpendicular surfaces, their features should be taken into account:

  • In individual buildings, equipped with a coating of timber, concrete or cement, wall mounting is provided;
  • How to attach skirting boards to a brick and aerated concrete floor with wood decking? Experts recommend driving nails with dowels.

In the first case, recesses for a plastic dowel are drilled to the foam concrete walls. The step of the points is considered depending on the selected material, floor deformation, external design of the planks. On average, it is 30-40 cm.

Partition features

It's important to know! On plastered walls or stone cladding or chipboard boards, a firm installation of the skirting board is not possible.

Alternatively, the floor will be the best rear. In the case when the situation is inevitable, you can resort to the special performance characteristics of self-tapping screws designed to carry out such work. Finishing galvanized nails are also suitable.

For uneven surfaces, there are skirting boards with rubber edges that form a snug fit. However, this does not preclude the obligation to align the location of the fasteners, especially the walls.

special corners are used at the joints

The skirting board must be laid from the corner of the largest wall of the room!

How to evenly attach the skirting board to the floor? When screwing in the next self-tapping screw, you need to pull back the plinth located near the previous nail. This will affect the high adhesion of the product to the wall.

The excess cut is removed using a jigsaw or a hacksaw for metal.

Trimming the length of the skirting board at the edge takes into account the 3-4 cm deepening into the end cap.

After making sure that there is a corner or a straight connecting element on the cut of the fixture, you can safely mount the last self-tapping screw.

The installation of a plastic floor plinth is greatly simplified by the production of components by manufacturers, the use of which makes it possible to do without cutting a profile at an angle, and the ease with which a plastic plinth can be sawed off with a hacksaw for metal with fine teeth.

Components sold separately. You need side caps (left and right caps sold in pairs), connectors, and inner and outer corners. With the help of the connecting element, the length of the profile is increased in cases where the length of the wall is longer than the standard length of the plinth. Plugs are installed in places where, for some reason, the profile cannot be laid, and in places where they are adjacent to doorways.

Advice. Calculate the number of accessories you need to install the skirting board indoors and buy with a small margin. Without installation experience, you can damage several elements, and the stock will come in handy. They are inexpensive, you need to choose the color of the profile.

Tool for work

You don't need a professional tool to install a plastic skirting board. The process is quite simple, and you can easily get by with the tool that you have at home:

  • You will need a punch, you will have to drill concrete or brick walls for dowels. For plasterboard walls, a drill is sufficient.
  • Screwdriver or screwdriver. Even a small number of dowel screws that need to be screwed in to fix the profile are better to tighten with a screwdriver than with an ordinary screwdriver.
  • Hacksaw for metal with fine teeth for profile sawing.
  • Awl. In the plinth, you will need to make a through hole for the dowel screw.
  • Small hammer.
  • Roulette and pencil.
  • Building level. It is needed to check the horizontal position of the mounting clips.
  • Depending on the chosen method of installing the plinth, you will still need glue or liquid nails, mounting clips, dowel screws.

Checking the planks

The floor plastic skirting board does not need to be kept indoors for 48 hours in order for it to adapt to humidity and temperature. And to lay out all the planks before laying and check the shade of each is a must. It happens that profiles in one package have a different shade of the same color. Choose planks in a darker shade and plan how they will be stacked against the light source. The difference in shade in this case will not be visible.

Installation features

It is recommended to start work from the far corner of the longest wall. An inner corner is put on the profile, and the strip is applied to the wall. The strip fits into corners, plugs and a connecting element 3-5 mm on each side. This should be taken into account during installation.

It is possible to install the profile on glue provided that the walls in the room are even. Otherwise, there will be problems with the fit of the strips in some places. A glue that is suitable for plastic or liquid nails is applied to the back of the profile, after which it is pressed against the wall. Then you need to follow the manufacturer's instructions - whether you need to take a break for a few minutes to allow the glue to dry a little. Press the profile against the wall with effort. Excess glue is removed immediately with a rag or sponge. Remember that this method means the impossibility of further dismantling the profile without damage.

For mounting on mounting clips or dowel screws, a mark is made for the first dowel on the wall with an indent from the corner of 40-50 mm.

Important! Remember that it is recommended to install the product on clips when the walls are flat. When installing the clips, you must constantly check that they are on the same line.

A hole is drilled in the wall with a puncher and a plastic dowel is inserted. If necessary, it is slightly knocked out with a hammer. For mounting on clips, the first clip is attached to the wall with a self-tapping screw. For installation on dowel screws, a hole for a self-tapping screw is made with an awl at the location of the dowel in the plinth with an awl. The self-tapping screw is twisted, but in such a way that its cap does not damage the profile.

If the wall is longer than the profile, before tightening the last self-tapping screw, a connecting element is put on the strip, which is cut to size on the opposite side.

In a profile with a cable channel, the self-tapping screw is screwed through the channel and will be covered with a decorative strip.

In a one-piece plinth, the screw cap is closed with a decorative plug.

Depending on the condition of the walls, dowel holes are drilled at intervals of 300-500 mm. If the walls are uneven, it is better to reduce the step. Having drilled all the holes on one wall, immediately remove the dust with a vacuum cleaner, it will be easier and more pleasant for you to work.

The wires are laid in the cable duct. This can be done at any time by simply removing the decorative strip. But if you install a plinth without a cable channel, and you need to run the wires, they are laid either before the screws are tightened (in this case, they will be under the screws), or after you have screwed them into the dowels. Leave the distance between the wall and the profile within 10 mm, lay the wires and tighten the screws until they stop. The wires will lie on top of them. To access the wires, you will need to loosen the screws again. Of course, a skirting board with a cable channel is much more convenient.

In the form of a conclusion

The work of laying floor plastic skirting boards is not a problem for anyone who has ever held a drill and a screwdriver in their hands. This is one of the reasons for their popularity. Be careful and tidy when installing, and you will put the finishing touches on your flooring.

The question of how to fix a plastic floor skirting board is very important. The fact is that this type of product is most often used for the final decoration of premises. Currently, there are several technological methods that are suitable for a specific situation. It must be borne in mind that installation must be carried out on a prepared surface.

Much attention must be paid to the preparation stage. Due to the fact that the installation of the plastic skirting board takes place on decorated surfaces, the installation site is already ready for use. But you need to select the necessary components:

  1. Corner overlays. They make it possible to make gussets without trimming parts. This option allows you to get rid of tedious pruning and get a more aesthetic look. Internal and external corners are provided for this process.
  2. End caps. Often times, skirting boards end near doorways, but there are other areas, such as built-in furniture. It is to form a beautiful ending that stubs are used. It should be borne in mind that they are in the left and right versions.
  3. Butt joints. They are used to hide the joints of two parts. They have small grooves in which each of the edges of the planks is installed. It is important to take into account that this option creates a visual separation of the overall canvas.

On a note! The installation of each additional part occurs at a certain stage of installation. It is important to calculate their location in advance and take into account that they take a few millimeters.

Before attaching the plastic skirting boards to the surface, you should also prepare the necessary tools for work. An individual set is selected for each specific situation.

Trimming products

Correct trimming of the material used affects the final result. Therefore, when a problem arises of how to fix a larger skirting board, you need to use simple tips:

  • How to cut? For this process, a metal saw with a blade that has small teeth is used. Alternatively, you can use an electric jigsaw, to which special files are selected.
  • When the fastening of the parts has already been made, but there is a need for a slight adjustment, a sharp construction knife is used. This device must be handled very carefully so as not to damage the front side.
  • It is advisable to cut the plinth only after careful measurements. A miter box is used for cutting at the desired angle.

Skirting trimming: outer and inner corner, arrangement of parts in the miter box

Such simple tips greatly facilitate the process and allow you to install the elements in the best quality.

Mounting options

Do-it-yourself installation of plastic skirting boards is performed using various methods. But before starting the installation process, you should make sure that all the main work has been completed. To avoid distortions and defects, the space between the wall and the floor is cleaned of excess debris. Any pieces of building material or dirt must be completely removed.

Fastening with glue

It is quite simple to mount parts with glue; this procedure does not require any special skills. But it has its own characteristics that must be taken into account.

  1. Surfaces must be prepared in advance. That is, all areas must be carefully leveled and must not have any defects.
  2. Further actions should be foreseen in advance. Dismantling glue-mounted skirting boards can be difficult as it increases the likelihood of damage to the decorative surfaces of walls or floors.
  3. After some time, parts may come off.
  4. Difficulties often arise due to the fact that the products are fixed exclusively to the walls; fixation to the floor is not provided.

When deciding to install the skirting board with glue, it is important to take into account the numerous disadvantages of this method.

Therefore, this method is most suitable for cosmetic repairs, which are planned to be redone in a few years. In this case, the best option would be the cheapest floor plastic skirting board that does not have connectors for flush mounting or installation on clips.

From the tools it is necessary to prepare a construction gun for using the compounds in tubes, glue or liquid nails, rags and sandpaper.

Technological order:

  1. The required number of strips is calculated, taking into account the location of the connecting elements.
  2. In view of the fact that the solution will be applied to the seamy surface, it is lightly rubbed with sandpaper to increase adhesion for better attachment.
  3. The glue is distributed evenly in several lines, which are located at some distance from each other.
  4. Each piece is pressed to the selected place, immediately torn off and finally installed after a few minutes. It is necessary to achieve maximum adhesion to the floor and wall.
  5. Excess glue is immediately removed with a rag.

On a note! Tearing off and subsequent final installation depends on the selected adhesive; many solutions do not require such a procedure.

Fixing on dowels and screws

This method is considered one of the most popular. This is facilitated by a number of advantages that it possesses:

  • The speed of fixing the part. Opening times will depend on the base available.
  • The fixation will be the strongest. Even with time, gaps will not appear.
  • The ability to mount on not entirely flat areas. The screws installed with a smaller gap will provide the desired tightness.

For work, you will need a screwdriver with bits or a set of screwdrivers, an awl, a hammer drill or an impact drill, dowels and self-tapping screws. In cases where parts are nailed to walls, nails and a hammer are needed.

Fixing the plinth with dowels and self-tapping screws is the most popular option for installing a floor product

Everything should be prepared in advance so that during the work process you will not be distracted by the search for the necessary devices.

Installation instructions for floor elements:

  1. It all starts with the markup. It is necessary to note the location of the part, taking into account the installed corner element, this will help not to make mistakes in the future.
  2. The first fragment is most often set without clipping. It is important to take into account that corner overlays eliminate the need to form a corner, but hide the space.
  3. Due to the fact that skirting boards with a cable channel are used for the process, which allows for hidden fastening, the cap is first removed.
  4. The interior has no pre-drilled holes. Therefore, they are marked out with an awl at the desired pitch and drilled with a suitable drill.
  5. The part is put in place and displayed according to the existing markings. The hole pattern is transferred to the surface.
  6. If the base is solid enough, then a preliminary boring is performed in order to install the dowels.
  7. Attach the product carefully so as not to cause damage while tightening the self-tapping screws. It is important to make sure it fits snugly on the floor.

But how do you nail down the skirting board? Indeed, the use of nails complicates the process a little. In order not to spoil the plastic parts, use a screwdriver or other suitable device.

Installation on planks

Currently, floor plinths made of plastic, which have a separate structure, are increasingly used for work. That is, on the seamy side there is a special bar that is used for fixing. How do I attach such options?

It is necessary to take into account some features:

  • It is these products that are attached both to the wall and to the floor. For this, the back bar must have an L-shape.
  • Installation does not take much time. You do not have to think about the fact that the main part will be damaged during the installation process.
  • The cover can be quickly removed if necessary.
  • The voids can be used for laying communications.

Thus, a great option is obtained, which gradually replaces other varieties.

Installation algorithm:

  1. The items are divided into two fragments.
  2. A preliminary marking is carried out for the installation strips. In most cases, this procedure is performed according to the instructions that come with the kit. In its absence, the required dimensions are removed from the part.
  3. Holes are made on the fixing element, if they were not made by the manufacturer. Their location is transferred to the surface. If the shape is L-shaped, the attachment can be carried out to the flooring.
  4. After installation, it remains only to fix the outer part.

Thus, when deciding how to install a plastic skirting board, you can choose exactly the method that will be suitable for a specific situation.

Plastic skirting boards have firmly won a leading position in interior decoration. The availability and variety of these products make it possible to use them in any interior. Here you will learn how to fix a plastic skirting board to the floor, their advantages, what components the product consists of and what is needed for self-assembly.

  • Affordable prices with high performance characteristics. The ability to purchase products in almost any store that sells construction or finishing materials;
  • Product sizes and many colors allow you to choose a plinth for any interior;
  • Ease of installation, makes it possible to install it yourself;
  • There is no need for additional processing;
  • A plastic skirting board can be used to frame rounded walls without cutting it into separate segments, and it is also better to lie on the unevenness of the wall;
  • Installation is possible in any premises, including those with high humidity;
  • Long service life;
  • They do not require complex maintenance during operation.
Cable routing in the skirting board

Also, a plastic skirting board for the floor can be used as a cable channel.

Component elements

  • Connecting element for joining skirting boards;
  • Bracket for fixing corners;
  • External and internal corners, for docking in the corners of the room;
  • End caps: right-hand and left-hand are used;
  • A bracket or clips for attaching the plinth to the wall are used depending on the design and method of installation; clips are not suitable for mounting products with a cable channel.

How to self-attach a plinth to the floor

If you are going to carry out the installation of a plastic skirting board with your own hands, you first need to remove from the room all objects that may interfere with work or move them to the center of the room, as well as remove all debris along the walls. The walls must be prepared, it is necessary to remove unnecessary irregularities and clean them of dust.

Work should start from the far corner of the room, gradually approaching the exit. Installation of plastic skirting boards is possible in any room where it is needed. It is important to ensure a snug fit to the wall and floor. Which fasteners to choose for the panels depends on the material of the walls and the floor covering.

When the walls are built of concrete or brick, the installation of the plastic skirting board is carried out using liquid nails or nails on the dowel.

To drywall

When the walls are pre-finished with plasterboard, in this version, screws with dowels (butterfly) are used for drywall. If a metal profile is laid along the floor, metal screws can be used, as well as installation using liquid nails.

To the floor

The plinth is rarely attached directly to the floor: this is done if it is necessary to close a large gap between the flooring and the wall, or when the wall structure does not allow the plinth to be securely fixed to it. In this case, the mounting methods are the same as on the walls, but there is a nuance. The plinth itself must be turned with the wide side to the floor, and the narrow one against the wall will turn out that the height will be less than the width or choose products with a wide base.

Fastening the skirting board to a concrete wall

General rules

Installation of the skirting board is one of the final stages of finishing; it is carried out after finishing the walls and floor. The skirting board must match the design of the room. We must strive to minimize the number of joints during installation, work should start from the far corner of the longest wall of the room. All gaps between the skirting board, the wall and the floor must be repaired to avoid dust accumulation.

When installing plastic skirting boards, it is necessary to take into account the depth of the grooves in the connecting elements in order to accurately determine the size of the strips. The attachment points must be positioned in such a way as to ensure a snug fit and secure attachment to the wall, this depends on the condition of the wall and the rigidity of the plinths. The mounting methods are chosen depending on the design of the skirting boards themselves and the installation methods.

Installation methods

A reliable way to fix skirting boards. It makes it possible to mount the skirting board, even on a surface with irregularities without visible gaps.

Dowel as fastener

The method is great if the installation is made to a brick or concrete wall. For fastening, dowel nails with a countersunk side are required. It is necessary that the entire dowel is completely immersed in the wall, otherwise there will be a gap.

Before installation, an inner corner is attached to the profile and attached to the adjacent wall. If the wall has irregularities, you need to add attachment points, then you need to drill holes in the baseboard according to the diameter of the screws. After that, the places for the dowels are marked through the holes and the bar is removed.

With the help of a perforator and a drill with a victorious soldering, a hole is made in the wall according to the size of the dowel. The dowel must be driven into the wall completely, with a hammer, without much effort. The bar is put back and through the holes screw the screw into the dowel. The same is repeated with subsequent skirting boards, joining them with connecting elements.

The design of the skirting board should allow hiding the attachment points, otherwise the appearance will be unaesthetic. If the design does not provide for an external decorative strip, which usually covers the cable channel, the screws should be hidden with decorative plugs or special mastic.

Fastening with glue

You can quickly fix the plastic skirting board using a special mounting glue. This method is suitable if the wall surface is well leveled and prepared for bonding.

Usually they are used for mounting a skirting board, which does not provide for cable laying. The reverse side should be flat for a larger bonding area.

Previously, markings are applied on the wall where the installation will be made, then cut to the desired size. The adhesive must be applied in a continuous, preferably in a curved line, to the strip to be glued so that it does not squeeze out after being pressed against the wall. If the skirting board is narrow, the glue is applied in dots every five to seven centimeters. After that, you need to immediately evenly press the bar against the wall without leaving gaps, for the time indicated in the instructions for using the glue. On average, this is ten to fifteen minutes.

Do the same with corner joints and couplings. The possibilities of dismantling with such a connection without damaging the surface are very small, therefore the skirting board is fixed only once.

The skirting board is attached to the clips

Installing plastic skirting boards on clips allows you to completely hide the attachment points and, if necessary, easily dismantle the product. You can only work with flat surfaces. The design of the plank itself must be designed for fastening in this way.

First, markings are made for the clips on one line, then they are fixed with dowels or screws, after which a plinth strip is put on the clips. In places where the elements are joined, additional clips are installed for a strong connection. If you install a plastic skirting board yourself in this way, you need to know that the exact marking of the fastening of the clips is important here.

By drilling through the skirting board

We drill through

The need for such a method occurs when there is no cavity inside the skirting board. You can drill it with a drill or using a screwdriver. In this case, the part can be fixed with screws or dowel-nails. The holes are made according to the diameter of the fastening material and flared under the head, for this you can use a drill of a larger diameter, and you can also nail the plinth of plastic to the floor with nails, but for this you need to drill or pierce it with an awl and flare a hole for the cap.

To hide the joints, the caps of the fastening element are closed with decorative plugs or a putty tinted in color.

How to lay a cable under the skirting board

If it is necessary to lay the cable in the skirting board, it is better to do this during installation. When a cable channel is provided in the design, you need to remove the decorative strip and place the wires in the channel. Then fill the bar on one side and the other, and with light pressure, return it to its seat.

If the cable channel is not provided for by the design, but there is a free cavity, then the wires are tucked under the plinth at the time of attachment.

It should be noted that the cable must be taken with the calculation from the input to the point of connecting electrical appliances. There are times when there are no holes for the wire in the connecting elements, you can make them yourself, with a knife or a drill. The main thing is not to damage the communications that you lay in the baseboard during installation.

At the final stage of finishing work, together with the installation of baseboards, plastic thresholds for interior doors are also mounted. The difference in installation is that they are mounted on a horizontal surface and have a more decorative function.

Tool for work

For work you will need:

  • Screwdriver with a set of bits or a screwdriver, for fastening using screws or dowels;
  • A tape measure and a pencil are necessary for drawing markings on the walls, determining the required dimensions in individual installation areas, and calculating the amount of material required. For the convenience of marking a concrete or brick wall, you can use a marker;
  • A hacksaw for metal, for cutting plastic, and also, you can cut off a plastic baseboard using a grinder or a knife, it all depends on the rigidity of the product. In general, the master determines himself how to cut a plinth from plastic, the main thing is that the selected tool can do the job and not spoil the finishing material;
  • Hammer, for fastening with dowels and ordinary nails;
  • Drill with a hammer drill and a set of necessary drills, for holes when fastening with dowels, in concrete and brick walls;
  • You may also need: an awl, for making holes in plastic and a miter box, for cutting planks at an angle, if attached to glue, then a gun for liquid nails and a rubber spatula.

For a correct calculation, it is necessary to measure the entire perimeter of the room, take into account the adjoining protrusions and niches, divide the size by the length of one element of the plinth, usually two and a half meters.

Getting ready for the markup

The connecting elements must be taken according to the number of whole skirting boards. The required amount is rounded up to the nearest whole number.

Plinth installation is a responsible question, requiring accuracy and adherence to the profile mounting technology. Firstly, because it bears an aesthetic function, because a correctly selected plinth gives the room a complete, harmonious and well-groomed look, and secondly, it performs a purely practical task, closing the joint between the wall and the floor.

Shaped profile for a floor made of plastic, wood, MDF, polyurethane, stone, expanded clay and even metal hide not only technological grooves and finishing defects, but are also a significant part of the interior of the room, the correct installation of the floor plinth is an accord of good repair. In the article, we will understand in detail: how, where, by what, in what way and what kind of baseboard to install, and what features of the installation will have to be faced depending on the type of flooring.

Installation of a profile made of wood has its own characteristics, before gluing the plinth to the floor, it is necessary to correctly join the corners

Where to attach

The choice of skirting boards for the floor is very large, the planks differ in their shape, size and configuration, as well as in the material they are made of. We will also tell you about the features of fastening, depending on the material and shape, in our article, and now we will figure out where to fix the plinth correctly.

The presence of two planes: wall and floor, determines two ways of fixing the plinth. How to understand which installation option is preferable? The simplest solution to the problem is to attach the floor profile to the surface where it is much easier to drive the fasteners.

If the house is wooden, the floors are concrete, and the screed is cement, or the house is made of aerated concrete, and the floors are wooden, then it is logical to attach the plinth to wooden surfaces, in the first case - to install to the walls, in the second - to the floor. If all surfaces are concrete, you need to fix the plinth where it is more convenient for you to drill holes for dowels. Here, the setup mainly depends on the instrument and your preference.

Installation of plastic skirting boards is greatly facilitated by additional elements

Now it is very popular to decorate the walls with plasterboard, build partitions from it, level it with plaster, in this case it is recommended to fix the plinth to a concrete or wooden floor. If the floors are covered with chipboard, OSB and gypsum board before finishing, then the strips are attached to a concrete or wooden wall. This measure is necessary, because the fastening in these materials looses over time, the dowel comes out of the hole, the plinth moves away from the wall, as a result, an ugly gap is obtained, the aesthetic appearance of the room is lost. Well, if the walls are made of gypsum plasterboard, and the floor is OSB, gypsum plasterboard, chipboard, then it remains to use a special butterfly dowel, which will securely fix the mount. Also, with such an installation, it is possible to fix the plinth to the floor to wooden logs, or to the walls to the metal profile of the crate with special screws.

What to mount

When the plane is selected, the question arises: what to attach the floor plinth to?

The quickest and easiest way to install skirting boards is with liquid nails. It is enough to glue the back of the skirting board and press the strip firmly against the wall or floor. But, firstly, this method of fastening is not suitable for plinths made of fragile materials, such as MDF, and secondly, this is a method of installation "for centuries", the profile cannot be removed and used if something went wrong, or later repair.

All subsequent installation methods for skirting boards require drilling. Immediately, we note that the optimal gap between fasteners is 300-500 mm. The dowel-nail should enter the floor or wall by 30 mm, but if the surfaces are uneven, then it is better to choose a self-tapping screw 3.5 * 40, to them dowel No. 6.

Advice: If the plinth does not have a special fastening strip or recesses for the clip, then the length of the self-tapping screw should be equal to the length of the dowel plus the thickness of the plinth.

Inexpensive models made of MDF and wood, as well as some plastic skirting boards, are fastened with self-tapping screws or nails, which are hammered right over the decorative layer, penetrating the entire body of the profile. For the installation to be done neatly, after drilling the base, hammer in the dowels, attach the plinth to the fixing point, transfer the drilling points to the plinth. Then, strictly according to the markings, drill the bar through with a thin drill, then take a drill of a larger diameter and make a countersink - a notch for the head of a self-tapping screw or nail. Replace the profile and attach it. You can hide the fasteners with special stickers and a wax pencil, if the plinth already has a decorative coating, wood and MDF for painting are putty with a special compound, then painted.

Hidden installation methods

In modern models of skirting boards, recesses for clips are provided (usually these are profiles made of wood and MDF), in the plastic and metal profiles there is a special bearing element that is fixed to the base, after which the upper decorative strip is fixed to it.

The installation of the clip is very simple: first, holes are drilled around the perimeter of the room, a plastic dowel is inserted into them. Then a clip is applied and fastened with a self-tapping screw. When all the clips are in place, a veneer or wooden skirting board is applied and simply squeezed into place. If necessary, the profile can be easily removed and reinstalled.

In a similar way, the starting base is attached under the plastic and metal profile. Before attaching the plastic skirting board, the bearing surface is marked for the dowels. When all the holes in the wall or floor are drilled and the plastic dowels are installed, the strip is applied to the installation site, the drilling sites are transferred to it. Then, holes are made according to the marking, and the base is attached to the supporting surface, after which the decorative part of the plinth is snapped into place.

Advice: With a drill, do not tighten the self-tapping screw a couple of turns so that the starting bar does not crack from excessive effort. It is better to fix the base tightly by hand, with a screwdriver.

Polyurethane, duropolymer and ceramic skirting boards are attached to the base with special glue or foam. If the walls are even, before fixing the plinth to the floor, you can stick the wallpaper, if the surface has visible defects, then first it is leveled, and only then the plinth is installed. Features of installing skirting boards made of MDF and wood

The installation of profiles made of wood and MDF is complicated by the fact that these models do not have docking elements, therefore, in addition to a tape measure, a pencil, a building corner and a drill, you will need a special miter box for cutting corners and a hacksaw.

It is better to start the installation of a wooden floor plinth from the doorway, from left to right.

First, we cut two profiles at an inner corner. When you are convinced that the joint is even, we measure the distance to the opening on one plank, draw it out, and saw it off at a right angle. The second plank, along the long wall, fits entirely so that the joints are invisible and do not spoil the interior of the room after installation, it must be cut from the other end at an angle of 45 °. All ends are carefully sanded. After the parts are fitted, they are attached to the base using self-tapping screws or nails. Adjustment and installation of subsequent skirting boards is carried out in the same way. After the skirting boards are installed, the gaps are covered with putty, the surface is sanded, then the topcoat can be applied.

Since it is very difficult to install wooden elements without certain skills, we suggest looking at how to properly install floor skirting boards, how to fix them, a video instruction will help you to understand the intricacies of the process step by step.

Installation of plastic skirting boards

Installing plastic skirting boards with your own hands is much easier than installing wooden counterparts, these models are equipped with corners, plugs, docking elements, so you don't have to file a corner. In addition, the profile is equipped with a base that is attached to the wall, and only then a decorative cover is put into the grooves, which has soft edges along the entire length, so it is tightly pressed against the surfaces during installation, and there are no technical holes on the front side.

Fastening of plastic skirting boards begins from the corner along the long wall, so that during installation there are as few scraps as possible. When the wall is marked and drilled, and the dowels are installed, the decorative element is removed from the plinth, the base is applied to the installation site, the markings are transferred to it. Next, an internal corner element is put on the end, and the profile is screwed to the wall with screws. If the walls have smooth curves, then the strip can be easily bent during installation, since the material is very flexible.

A docking bar is put on the other end, the next profile is applied and installed. If it is more than necessary, the required distance is measured, 2-3 mm are subtracted from each side, the profile is cut to size, at an angle of 90 °, the ends are processed with a file or sandpaper. At one end, the plinth is installed into the docking element, the corner is put on the opposite (external or internal depends on the geometry of your room), after which the base is fixed. When the base is installed around the entire perimeter of the room, a cable is laid in special grooves, after which the upper element is fixed, plugs are installed near the opening.

Installation of plastic skirting boards does not require filing at the profile joints at an angle

Advice: In complex and large rooms, it is better to lay the cable as the skirting boards are installed, so you do not have to pull it through the cable channel along the entire perimeter.

Success secrets

We have already found out that the choice of which plane to fix the plinth to depends on the physical and mechanical properties of the base. But for each type of flooring, there are also rules for how to set a profile.

For example, if you decide to lay laminate or parquet flooring, then the skirting board is attached exclusively to the wall. Before attaching the skirting board to the laminate, make sure that there is a technical gap between the flooring and the wall, which is necessary to avoid deformation if the laminate expands during use. Veneered and wooden skirting boards are installed, as a rule, on a solid, laminate or parquet floor, if the wall has minor defects, irregularities, it is recommended, in addition to clips, to attach the profile to parquet pins. On floors made of porcelain stoneware or other tiles, it is better to choose skirting boards from the same material for installation, they are attached to the wall with tile glue, then the joints are putty. For fixing skirting boards to self-leveling floors and surfaces made of artificial stone, there is a special glue that very closely matches the color of the original material.

Correctly selected and installed skirting boards harmoniously fit into the interior

In children's rooms and in rooms with a large glazing area, it is better to install a warm skirting board. For bathrooms, loggias and other rooms with a specific microclimate, pvc profiles that do not absorb moisture are ideal.

We have analyzed several ways how to install a floor plinth, videos and photos in the article explain step by step all the technological nuances of attaching slats from different materials. By and large, the secret to the success of the installation lies in the accuracy of the fastening and in the correct choice of skirting boards in shape, material, size and color to different floor coverings.
