Quoted from:

"How to learn to understand prayers?".
-M.: "Father's house", 2007

According to biblical teaching, sorrow and despondency are the result of a sinful life of a person. Falling into them, the soul falls away from God, from the source of joy and love, peace and good. But the Lord promised to give a person according to his faith, therefore, despite the various situations and phenomena that can occur in our life, even falling under one of the mortal sins - despondency due to our sins, we must strive to get out of it as soon as possible, before this disease takes root and did not grow in the soul.

One of the ways that allows you to avoid a painful situation is to read a special rule that helps to overcome this dangerous spiritual disease. The rule is called the Penitential Canon. It can be read to the Guardian Angel, who is assigned to a person and is able, at the request of his ward, to do a lot for him, to the Lord and, of course, to our main Intercessor - the Queen of Heaven.

Story

In the VIII century from the Nativity of Christ, the prayer canon of the Mother of God was created by a holy man, a spiritual writer named Theostirikt (or Theoctist). It was a famous admirer in his time sacred icons and the author of many spiritual texts.

Then the Emperor Constantine Copronymus ruled in Greece. He was a cruel king, and the period of his reign is the time of the appearance of iconoclasm in addition to the persecution of the Church. The reign of Emperor Constantine Copronimus is sometimes even compared with the reign of the pagan ruler Diocletian, who inhumanly mocked Christians. Similarly, this ruler subjected the monks for their fidelity to Christ, for the fact that they guarded the icons, terrifying tortures.

Unfortunately, St. Theostirikt was no exception: his nose and hands were burned with hot resin. The rest were stoned. However, this holy elder, the creator of the sacred canons of repentance to the Lord, the Mother of God and the saints, nevertheless steadfastly withstood the trials that befell him and, as a result, lived a fruitful life. long life reposed in deep old age.

Ancient sources contain information that Saint Theostirict often suffered from bouts of black despondency. It was associated with constant persecution by the emperor of the state against Christians of that time. He deeply worried about the fate of the Church of Christ, His people, because they were constantly being attacked.

Therefore, being a deeply religious person and also having the gift of spiritual writing, he composed special hymnographic songs-poems, which were called the Holy Penitential Canons to Christ, the Mother of God, the Guardian Angel. These chants supported the monk and allowed him to overcome this painful state and again find peace in his soul and harmony in relations with the Almighty.

Reading the canon today

Today, believers who read these canons of St. Theostiriks in special situations equally experience a positive result not only in relation to their internal state, but also note positive changes in their external, family, personal life.

Canons are sung together with other chants or separately. The main thing is that prayer comes from the heart, this is what will ultimately play a decisive role.

About the language of the canon

Initially, since the canon was written by a Greek, it was created in the author's native language - Greek. After our ancestors, it was translated into the then Slavic. This language is still in our modern temples books are printed on it, according to which the clergy sing prayers according to all the canons. For ease of use and understanding, new books have been published in which all the words of the prayers are preserved, but printed in modern letters.

This made it much easier to understand. Actually, it is this option that we see in almost all prayer books. At first, it is difficult to understand Slavic verbal constructions, the manner of expressing thoughts, long complex sentences and so on. But for Christians, for whom Russian has become a second native language, but was not such initially, there are translations where all the words and expressions of prayers are written as if they were written by modern man using fully modern vocabulary. Such prayer books can be bought or heard, for example, on New Athos in Abkhazia.

Of course, the canons of repentance have been translated into all the languages of the world, so that Christians from other nationalities can begin this great heritage of the possibility of healing their souls and receiving help from above.

The main types of prayer hymns to the Most Holy Theotokos

It should be noted that at the moment a fairly significant number of prayer addresses to the Mother of God have already been written, perhaps more than any of the saints or even the Lord. This is due to the multitude of Her holy miraculous icons. However, in general, all prayers, both large and small, are divided into:

  • prayer,
  • repentant.

Canon of Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos

The prayer canon of the Mother of God is best known, which begins with the words “to the Mother of God, now diligently as a parson,” the text of which is also used when singing the prayer service to the Mother of God. It was written in the 12th century by a novice of one of the male monasteries of that time.

This is a prayer chant got its name due to the exceptionally penetrating hymn-singing verses that can cause in every Christian who prays with these words a state that is called “contrition of the heart” in the Gospels - when a person not only admits his imperfection, but also begins to grieve about it, which ultimately leads to the fact that he becomes more humane, kind, attentive.

This is what can be called "softening evil hearts." This is not just to crush a person, weaken him and take away all his dignity. And, you can say, change the minus to a plus. Replace pride with humility, meekness and love for your neighbor - the same once damaged. Evil should also be replaced with love and forgiveness for all the sorrows caused and become kinder, and therefore stronger.

A person who is kind and strong in his heart and will to do good returns the true dignity of his soul within himself. And more importantly, dignity before the eyes of God- so that he could not only give a person various benefits by grace, but also because he is kind and loving person it becomes simply worthy.

Of course, humility before God (as the highest love) allows the Creator to restore in us all the damaged areas of the soul and give grace, which the corrected human soul will be able to receive into itself. And with the return of the grace of God all evil and posthumous states of the soul also leave the soul of a person by themselves:

At one time, such a beneficent influence of prayer became the reason that the holy fathers included the canon Mother of God before Communion- every believer had to read it in order to approach with the right mindset the acceptance of the Body and Blood of Christ.

It should be noted that its original purpose is indicated by a brief explanation, which suggests that this chant is also worth starting to read when a person is overcome by various spiritual sorrows. The rule saves from it and from despondency.

Canon of Repentance to the Most Holy Theotokos

In addition to prayer hymns, the canon of repentance to our Most Holy Lady is also often published in the prayer book for the laity and monks. Christian Orthodox doctrine says that something that a person cannot forgive himself and others, God can. And also at all times, since the time of her earthly wandering, the Mother of God could ask Her beautiful Son about people, about events - about everything.

And now, when She is the Queen of Heaven and earth and has the grace from God to receive everything she asks, she does not forget us. Therefore, all those who have realized the need for this resort to Her protection and protection from themselves, from sin and damage to the soul. Now she is the Helper and Patron of all sinful people.

It is for this reason that all Christians (and not only) from century to century cry out to Her in their petitions for help from the consequences of their sinful actions. Resorting to the canons to the Mother of God, petitions about her help in atoning for sins- this chant to the Blessed Virgin Mary is the most accessible means to achieve this goal.

Canon to the Theotokos before Communion

Before Communion, the combined canons are read:

  • Lord Jesus Christ,
  • Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos,
  • Guardian Angel.

One troparion (song) was taken from each canon. A chorus is sung between songs (there are several of them, and they change depending on the place of the canon). To the Mother of God, the chant sounds like " Holy Mother of God save us." Alternatively, it may be "Holy Mother of God", with the letter "e" at the end. This should not be taken as a mistake, but you need to know that the ancient pronunciation has been preserved, where the vocative case has been preserved, and it has the endings -o and -e.

The three canons before communion are combined as follows:

This is the usual procedure for reading combined canons. But, in any case, one should rely on the compiler of the prayer book: everything in them usually corresponds to the rules.

You can also refer to the liturgical instructions or the Typicon - the complete charter church life and holding prayers and services.

The meaning of the canons to the Most Holy Theotokos

The reading of the canons before the Sacraments of Confession and Communion is a sequence of requests to the Lord and His Mother to give them the opportunity to confess, health, to give them the strength to proceed to Communion and cleanse the soul before themselves and God, so that the Guardian Angel is relentlessly near and does not allow dark forces attack, influence and send bad thoughts, did not allow the spirit of despondency to enter the soul, etc., delivered from temptations. The canon before communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ is capable of:

  • to help tune the mind, heart and soul to fellowship with the Heavenly Father,
  • give strength and health to go to confession,
  • free from sins
  • give inner opportunities to fight them and evil spirits.

In no case should you justify your laziness, give yourself indulgences or blame someone else for your sins. Sorrow and shame for one's actions must not be hypocritical. The health of the soul will inform the strength and the carnal component of man.

Constant reading of the canon is capable of many things:

  • cure anger and anger.
  • calm the desire to swear and quarrel,
  • give a good mood
  • satisfy greed and give the desire to share goodness with people.

There are many examples when, after prayer, the most favorable events occurred to people, something that was previously inaccessible was obtained. Prayer is the door to everyone's life for a different good. The Lord always hears (even if he does not show) the prayers of sinners, and many Angels, according to the assurance of Christ Jesus, rejoice in heaven and triumph when one of the sinners (and this is all of us) repents to God and offers sincere prayers.

Reading the canon ko Virgin Mary, like all other prayers, is necessary slowly, with heartfelt attention and contrition of the heart. It has great importance trying to understand the meaning of the canon, so that through the right attitude receive the grace of God.

The Mother of God is the Queen of Heaven, the spiritual Mother of all people on earth. The Church calls the Mother of God not just a saint, but the Most Holy, super-holy Virgin. Icons of the Mother of God sometimes appeared to people as a result of a miracle, and by praying to the Mother of God, virgin rejoice, the Mother of God has repeatedly shown miracles.

Prayers to the Mother of God

“My queen, my Hope, Mother of God, Friend of orphans and strange Representatives, grieving Joy, offended Patron!

See my trouble, see my sorrow; help me, as if I am weak, feed me, as if strange!

Offend my weight - resolve that one, like you will!

As if there is no other imam of help, except for You, neither another Representative, nor a good Comforter, only You, O Mother of God!

Yes, save me and cover me forever and ever. Amen.

All prayers to the Mother of God: Virgin Mother of God rejoice, repentance and thanksgiving prayers

The Mother of God is our intercessor in Heaven. Despite the fact that not many testimonies about the earthly life of the Virgin Mary have come down to us, which we can learn about from the Gospel, we are well aware that the Mother of God has helped believers more than once. The Savior said to the Apostle John, “Behold, your Mother!” (John 19:27). But these words are addressed not only to the Disciple of Christ. Mother of God - Mother of all people.

Prayers of supplication to the Most Holy Theotokos

Rejoice Virgin Mary

Before the Dormition, the Mother of God

Prayer 1st

To whom shall I cry, Lady? To whom shall I resort in my sorrow, if not to Thee, Queen of Heaven? Who will receive my weeping and my sighing, if not You, Immaculate One, the hope of Christians and the refuge of us sinners? Who else will protect you in misfortune? Hear my groaning and incline Your ear to me, the Lady of the Mother of my God, and do not despise me, demanding Your help, and do not reject me, a sinner. Reason and teach me, Queen of Heaven; do not depart from me, Thy servant, Lady, for my murmuring, but wake me Mother and Intercessor. I entrust myself to Your merciful protection: bring me, a sinner, to a quiet and serene life, and cry for my sins. To whom shall I resort guilty, if not to Thee, the hope and refuge of sinners, with hope for Thy inexpressible mercy and Thy bounty we enshrine? O Lady, Queen of Heaven! You are my hope and refuge, cover and intercession and help. My Queen, Favorable and quick Intercessor, cover my sins with Your intercession, protect me from enemies visible and invisible; soften the hearts of evil people who rise up against me. O Mother of the Lord my Creator! You are the root of virginity and the unfading color of purity. Oh Mother of God! Give me help to those who are weak with carnal passions and who are sick of the heart, for Yours alone and with You Your Son and our God imam intercession; and by Your wonderful intercession, may I be delivered from all misfortune and misfortune, O Immaculate and Most Glorious Mother of God Mary. The same with hope, I say and cry: Rejoice, Blessed One; rejoice, overjoyed; Rejoice, Blessed One: The Lord is with you!

Prayer 2

My Tsarina Preblagaya, my hope, Mother of God, Friend of orphans and strange Representatives, grieving Joy, offended Patron! See my misfortune, see my sorrow, help me, as if I am weak, feed me, as if strange. I’ll offend my weight, resolve it, as if you will: if I don’t have another help for You, or another Representative, or a good Comforter, only You, O Bogomati, as if you save me and cover me forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer 3rd

O Blessed Virgin, Mother of the Lord Most High, Intercessor and Protector of all who resort to You! Look from the height of Your saints on me, a sinner (name), falling to Your pure image; hear my warm prayer and bring it before your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ; pray to Him, may it illuminate my gloomy soul with the light of His Divine grace, may it deliver me from all need, sorrow and illness, may it send me a quiet and peaceful life, health of body and soul, may my suffering heart die and heal its wounds, may it instruct me for good deeds, let my mind be cleansed from vain thoughts, but having taught me the fulfillment of His commandments, let it deliver from eternal torment and let it not deprive me of His Kingdom of Heaven. O Holy Mother of God! You, “Joy of All Who Sorrow,” hear me, the mournful one; You, called "Assuagement of Sorrow", quench my sorrow as well; You, “Burning Kupino”, save the world and all of us from the harmful fiery arrows of the enemy; You, "Seeker of the Lost", do not let me perish in the abyss of my sins. On Tya, according to Bose, all my hope and hope. Be my Intercessor in my temporary life, and about eternal life before Your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, Intercessor. Teach me to serve that with faith and love, but to you, Most Holy Mother of God, Blessed Mary, reverently honor until the end of my days. Amen.

Prayer 4th

The Virgin Mistress of the Theotokos, who bore the Savior Christ and our God in her womb, I place all my hope in You, I trust in You, the highest of all Heavenly powers. You, Most Pure One, guard me with Your Divine Grace. Manage my life and guide according to the holy will of Your Son and our God. Grant me the remission of sins, be my refuge, cover, protection and guide, leading me to eternal life. In the terrible hour of death, do not leave me, my Lady, but hasten to help me and rescue me from the bitter torment of demons. For in your will you have power; do this, as truly the Mother of God and dominating over everything, Receive the venerable and the only gifts brought to you from us, your unworthy servants, the most merciful, all-holy Lady of the Mother of God, chosen from all generations, who turned out to be the highest of all creatures of heaven and earth. Inasmuch as through Thee we have come to know the Son of God, through Thee the Lord of hosts has become with us, and we have become worthy of His holy Body and Blood, then blessed are You throughout the generations of generations, most God-blessed, most holy of the Cherubim and most glorious of the Seraphim; and now, revered, All-Holy Theotokos, do not stop pleading for us, Thy unworthy servants, to get rid of every wiles of the evil one and from every extreme, and keep us unharmed with every poisonous attack. Even to the end, by Your prayers, keep us uncondemned, and saved by Your intercession and Your help, we will always send glory, praise, thanksgiving and worship to the one God in the Trinity and the Creator of all. Good and blessed Lady, Mother of the good, all-good and most good God, look at the prayer of Your unworthy and indecent servant with Your merciful eye, and act with me according to the great mercy of Your indescribable kindness and do not look at my sins, both in word and in deed, and made with every feeling, arbitrarily and involuntarily, with knowledge and in ignorance, and renew all of me, making the temple of the all-holy, life-giving and dominating Spirit, which is the power of the Most High, and overshadowed Your all-pure womb, and dwelt in it. For You are the helper of the troubled, the representative of the distressed, the savior of the overwhelmed, the haven of the troubled, the protector and intercessor of those in extremes. Grant to Your servant contrition, silence of thoughts, constancy of thought, a chaste mind, sobriety of the soul, a humble way of thinking, a holy and sober mood of the spirit, a prudent and well-organized disposition, serving as a sign of spiritual composure, also piety and peace, which our Lord gave to His disciples. May my supplication come to Thy holy temple and to the habitation of Thy glory; May my eyes exhaust the sources of tears, and may You wash me with my own tears, whiten with streams of my tears, cleansing me from the filth of passions. Erase the handwriting of my falls, scatter the clouds of my sorrow, darkness and confusion of thoughts, remove from me the storm and the desire of passions, keep me in serenity and silence, expand my heart with spiritual expansion, rejoice and rejoice me with unspeakable joy, unceasing joy, so that by the right paths of the commandments Thy Son, I walked faithfully and with an unreproachable conscience I went through an uncomplaining life. Give me, who prays before You, a pure prayer, so that with an unperturbed mind, unwandering reflection and with an insatiable soul, I constantly day and night learn the words of the Divine Scriptures, sing in confession, and in the joy of the heart bring prayer to the glory, honor and magnificence of the only-begotten Son Yours and our Lord Jesus Christ. He deserves all glory, honor and worship now, and always, and forever and ever! Amen.

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos, St. Ephrem the Syrian

The Virgin, the Mistress of the Mother of God, more than nature and words, gave birth to the only begotten Word of God, the Creator and Master of all visible and invisible creatures, the One from the Trinity of God, God and Man, who became the abode of the Divine, the receptacle of all holiness and grace, in which, by the good pleasure of God and the Father , with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, the Fullness of the Godhead dwelt bodily; incomparably exalted with divine dignity and prevailing over every creature, Glory and Consolation, and the inexpressible joy of the Angels, the royal crown of the apostles and prophets, the miraculous and miraculous courage of the martyrs, the Defender in exploits and the Giver of victory, who prepares for the ascetics crowns and rewards eternal and divine, honor and the glory of the saints, the infallible Waypointer and Instructor of silence, the door of revelations and spiritual mysteries, the Source of Light, the gate eternal life, an inexhaustible river of mercy, an inexhaustible sea of all divine gifts and miracles, we ask you and implore you, most compassionate Mother of the philanthropic Lord, be merciful to us, your humble and unworthy servants, look mercifully at our captivity and humility, heal the contrition of our souls and bodies, scatter visible and invisible enemies, be for us, unworthy, in the face of our enemies, a strong pillar, an abusive weapon, a strong militia, a Governor and an irresistible Champion, now show us Your ancient and wonderful mercy, that our lawless enemies will know that Your Son and God is one, King and Master, that You are truly the Theotokos, who gave birth in the flesh to the true God, that everything is possible for You, and whatever you desire, Lady, you have the power to do all this in Heaven and on earth, and for every request to grant what is useful to anyone: health to the sick, peace and good navigation in the sea. Travel and protect those who travel, save the captives from bitter slavery, console the sad, alleviate poverty and all other bodily suffering: free everyone from spiritual illnesses and passions, through Your invisible intercessions and suggestions, so that, having made the path of this temporary life well and without stumble, we will improve through You and these eternal blessings in the Kingdom of Heaven. Faithful, honored by the terrible name of Thy Only Begotten Son, who trust in Thy intercession and in Thy mercy, and in everything who have Thee as their Intercessor and Champion, strengthen invisibly against the surrounding enemies, dispel the cloud of despondency that envelops their souls, deliver them from spiritual conditions and give them light complacency and joy, restoring peace and serenity in their hearts. Save with Your prayers, the Lady, this flock, predominantly dedicated to You, the whole city and country, from hunger, earthquake, drowning, fire, sword, invasion of foreigners, internecine warfare, and turn away every anger righteously moved against us, by the goodwill and grace of the only-begotten Son and Thy God, to Him befits all glory, honor and worship, with His Father Without Beginning, with His Co-eternal and Life-Giving Spirit, now and always, and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer invocation to the Most Holy Theotokos, St. John of Kronstadt

Oh, Lady! Yes, not in vain and in vain do we call You the Mistress: reveal and manifest over us Your holy, living, active dominion. Reveal, for you can do everything for good, as the Mother of the all-good of the all-good King; disperse the darkness of our hearts, reflect the arrows of crafty spirits, flatteringly moved at us. May the peace of Thy Son, Thy peace reign in our hearts, may we all joyfully exclaim: who is after the Lord, like our Lady, our all-good, all-merciful and most swift Intercessor? For this you are exalted, Mistress, for that an abundance of indescribable divine grace has been given to you, for that inexpressible boldness and strength at the throne of God and the gift of almighty prayer have been given to you, for this you have been adorned with indescribable holiness and purity, for this you have been given unapplied power from the Lord, so that you can preserve, protect, intercede, purify and save us, the inheritance of your Son and God, and yours. Save us, O most pure, all-good, all-wise and all-merciful! You are the Mother of our Savior, Who of all names deigned to be called the Savior more than anyone else. It is natural for us, wandering in this life, to fall, for we are overlaid with many-passionate flesh, surrounded by spirits of malice in high places, seducing to sin, we live in an adulterous and sinful world, seducing to sin; and You are above all sin, You are the brightest Sun, You are the Most Pure, All-good and All-pleasing, It is Your nature to purify us, defiled by sins, as a mother cleanses her children, if we call on You humbly for help, You tend to raise us, who are constantly falling, to intercede to protect and save us, who are slandered by the spirits of evil, and to instruct us to walk towards every path of salvation.

Prayer to the Mother of God

What to pray to You, what to ask of You? You see everything, you know Itself: look into my soul and give her what she needs. You, who have endured everything, overcome everything, you will understand everything. You, who raised the Child in a manger and accepted Him with Your hands from the Cross, You alone know the whole height of joy, all the oppression of grief. You, who received the whole human race as an adoption, look at me with maternal care. Lead me from the shadows of sin to Your Son. I see a tear that irrigated Your face. It's over me You spilled it and let it wash away the traces of my sins. Here I have come, I am standing, I am waiting for Your response, O Mother of God, O All-Singing, O Mistress! I don't ask for anything, I just stand before You. Only my heart, a poor human heart, exhausted in anguish for truth, I cast down to Your Most Pure Feet, Lady! May all who call upon You reach the eternal day with You and bow down before You face to face.

Mother of God Rule

The Theotokos Rule was written for Orthodox Christians and marks fifteen major milestones in the earthly life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Therefore, the rule is divided into fifteen parts. The Monk Seraphim of Sarov blessed his spiritual children to read the rule 150 times a day in the Diveevo Monastery. It is believed that in the cell of Seraphim of Sarov there was an old book with descriptions of miracles performed through the prayers of the Mother of God, the Virgin Mother of God, the Rule of the Mother of God and other prayers. Reading the rule is an important part of spiritual life, this prayer helps to remember how difficult spiritual path The Mother of God, who gave birth to our Savior Jesus Christ, passed by.

If, out of habit, it will be difficult to overcome 150 times daily, you should read 50 times at first. After each ten, one should read "Our Father" and "Mercy Door" once:

Our Father, Who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as in heaven and on earth. Give us our daily bread today; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Open the doors of mercy to us, blessed Mother of God, who hope in Thee, let us not perish, but let us be delivered from troubles by Thee: Thou art the salvation of the Christian race.

The words Blessed are you in women mean that the Theotokos, as the Mother of God, is glorified more than all other women (Luke 1:42; Ps. 44:18).

The words blessed is the fruit of thy womb taken from the greeting of the righteous Elizabeth, when the Holy Virgin Mary, after the annunciation, wished to visit her (Luke 1:42).

Rejoice Virgin Mary, Valaam

The Most Holy Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary is a miracle and a mystery, incomprehensible even to the Angels: “The Heavens were horrified about this, and the ends of the earth were surprised, as if God had appeared as a man of the flesh, and Your womb was the most spacious of Heaven, thee, the Mother of God, the Angels and the man of office magnify ”, writes the creator of the prayer canon. She is a Deity after God, as St. Gregory the Theologian said about Her. However, in other works, the holy fathers speak quite specifically about the place of the Mother of God. In particular, Saint Epiphanius emphasizes: “Let Mary be honored, but the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit must be worshipped.”

We learn about the genealogical tree of the Lady Theotokos in the Gospel of the Apostle Luke, who says that She came “from the house of David”. In the so-called Protoevangelium of James the Brother of the Lord, it is said that the priest Matthan married Mary and they had four children: James, who gave birth to Joseph, the husband of the Mother of God, Mary, who gave birth to Salome the midwife, Sovi, who gave birth to Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, Anna, who gave birth to Mariam , Mother of the God-Man Jesus Christ.

The name “Mariam”, which was given to the Theotokos by Her parents, Joachim and Anna, comes from the Hebrew word meaning “master” - accordingly, the name Mariam can be understood as “lady”. But Her most important name is “The Mother of God”, for She is the Mother of the Lord. This was approved at the Third Ecumenical Council in 431. However, the Church, wishing to express great love and the great respect felt for the Ever-Virgin, gave Her many honorary titles and epithets. A typical example in this regard is St. Nectarios, who dedicated five thousand poetic verses to the Mother of God, which were included in his “Theotokos”.

From the Gospels of the New Testament, we learn that the Virgin of Nazareth received the Annunciation from the Archangel Gabriel, visited her cousin Elizabeth, who was already carrying the Precious John the Forerunner, gave birth to the Savior of the world in Bethlehem, fled to Egypt to protect the child from murderers, searched for Her twelve-year-old Son in Jerusalem, while He was in the temple and talked with the teachers, was present at the wedding feast in Cana of Galilee, where she interceded with Her Son, accompanied the Lord on the way to Golgotha, experienced the holy events of the Crucifixion, the burial of the Holy Body and the glorious Resurrection of the Lord and the descent of the Holy Spirit, which took place in the Upper Room of Zion on the day of Pentecost.

We also learn about the life of the Mother of God from the patristic tradition, which is an equally authoritative source as the apostolic tradition, of which it is a natural continuation, since it is based on the experience and guidance of the Holy Spirit. The main sources of this kind are the work of St. Dionysius the Areopagite “On the Divine Names”, praises of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos written by various saints of our Church, such as John of Damascus and Andrew of Crete, church hymnography and iconography. We also find important introductions in the story of St. John the Theologian about the Dormition of the Theotokos Mary.

The Blessed Dormition of the Mother of God happened in the year 47 AD, when She was aged 59-70 years, that is, 25 years after the Ascension of the Lord. Archangel Gabriel, who has been serving Her all these years, has now brought Her the news that in three days the Lord will take Her pure soul. After this holy news, the Lady Theotokos ascended the Mount of Olives and prayed to her Son and God. She then told the church about the upcoming event and began preparations accordingly. On the day of the Assumption, the grace of God, under the guise of a cloud, transferred the apostles who were at a distance to the house of the Evangelist John in Gethsemane, so that they would take a blessing from the Mother of God and be present at Her blessed death. The Apostles Paul and Timothy, Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, along with other saints, were already here. The Mother of God comforted the apostles and advised them to pray for the salvation of the whole world until that very morning, when Her Son Himself took away Her spirit.

Then Her God-receiving body, accompanied by angelic and apostolic singing, was placed in a coffin and buried in Gethsemane, despite the fact that the Jews prevented this holy rite. There is evidence that a certain Jew named Jethonia tried to prevent the burial of the Mother of God, but his hands were cut off by an invisible force. But fortunately, Jephoniah repented and was immediately healed. A similar fate awaited those who wickedly approached the Mother of God: they were blinded, but, having repented, they regained their sight.

Indestructible Psalter

The indestructible Psalter is read not only about health, but also about repose. From ancient times, the ordering of a commemoration on the Unsleeping Psalter is considered a great almsgiving for the departed soul.

It is also good to order the Indestructible Psalter for yourself, support will be vividly felt. And one more important point, but far from the least important,
There is an eternal commemoration on the Indestructible Psalter. It seems expensive, but the result is more than a million times more than the money spent. If this is still not possible, then you can order for a shorter period. It's also good to read for yourself.

In the end, the apostles buried the most holy body of the Mother of God and remained here for another three days, constantly echoing the angelic singing and rejoicing. “When, after three days, the angelic singing ceased, the apostles opened the tomb, because one of them, who was absent and arrived after the third day, wished to bow to the God-receiving body. But they could not find Her all-singing body, so, having found only the lying funeral garments and being filled with an indescribable fragrance emanating from them, they closed the coffin,” writes St.

The apostle, who was absent on the day of the Assumption, according to Tradition, is Thomas. Thus, on the third day after the Dormition of the Mother of God, when She had to bodily join Her Son, the Apostle Thomas, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, was transferred to Gethsemane, where he saw the Mother of God ascending to Heaven. Then the Mother of God gave him her Honest Belt, which now, like the apple of her eye, is kept by the holy Vatopedi Monastery.

Prayer Canons to the Most Holy Theotokos

Magnificent is the day of celebration of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos. The festive troparion and kontakion explain the reason for this: “In the Nativity you preserved your virginity, in the Assumption of the world you did not leave the Mother of God, you reposed to your stomach, Mother of the Life of the Life, and with Your prayers you deliver our souls from death.” “In prayers, the unsleeping Mother of God and in intercession, immutable hope, the coffin and mortification cannot be restrained: like the Mother of the Belly, put it to the stomach, into the womb of the ever-virgin.”

The feast of the Assumption of the Virgin was at first a passing one, but later, by order of the Emperor Mauritius, its celebration was fixed for August 15/28.

Today, this holiday is preceded by a pious two-week period, when in the evenings we Christians gather in churches to sing a prayer canon to the Most Holy Theotokos.

We resort to the Mother of God and sing the prayer canon, because we firmly believe, like the creator of this canon, that “No one, flowing to You, is put to shame, comes from You, Most Pure Virgin Mary: but asks for grace and accepts the gift for a useful petition.” Our experience of the countless blessings received from the Heavenly Lady does not give us the right to remain silent: “We will never keep silent, Mother of God, to speak unworthy of Your power: otherwise You would not be praying, who would save us from so many troubles? We will not retreat, O Lady, from Thee, for Thy servants save us forever from all kinds of cruel ones. “I do not hide the depths of Your mercy, and the current of immeasurable miracles, and the Source of the Ever-flowing truly even to me Your mercy, Lady, but I confess to everyone, and I cry, and I preach, and I prophesy.”

We confess to the Lady Mother of God in our sinfulness, we fall to Her with cries of despair, mental and physical pain and sorrow, making us feel that our life is “approaching hell”. However, we do not despair and do not lament, as if having no hope, but from the depths of our hearts we sing: “Fulfill my heart with joy, Virgin, who accepts the fulfillment of joy, consumes sinful sorrow.” We place all our hopes on Her, for we know from our own experience that the Mother of God is true compassion and a source of mercy, the only refuge of the world, “an immutable intercession to the Creator.” In addition, we ask Her to govern our lives, as if "an indestructible wall and intercession", protecting us from the "demonic shooting" that surrounds us and which we ourselves are not able to defeat. This is how we Christians live the true summer Pascha.

These days, until the evening of August 13, except for Saturday evening services and the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the Small and Great (fair) are alternately sung prayer canons, the creations of Theodore II Laskar, emperor of Nicaea, who lived in the 13th century.

We know nothing about the author of the small prayer canon, monk Theoktista. It is known about the compiler of the Great Prayer Canon, Theodore II, that he was the son of St. John Vatatzes and Irina Laskar. It is said that Emperor Theodore suffered from an illness that caused him deep despondency and prompted him to pray for healing. Moreover, one gets the impression that he once distanced himself from God and therefore often repeated the phrase “forsaken you, Christ.” Thus, the prayers of the emperor took the form of a prayer canon to the Mother of God, because then he met Saint Theodora, the queen of Epirus, who greatly revered the Mother of God.

It was she who taught him in difficult moments, and especially when he was overcome by despondency, to turn to the Mother of God and ask Her to ease his pain, to bestow Divine joy and comfort. This prayer canon “talks about the suffering and torment of one soul. Here the Greek emperor, persecuted, overcome and oppressed by the Latins, Arabs and his fellow citizens, tells the Mother of God about his personal sorrows, about the persecution that he suffers from strangers and which he calls “clouds”,” writes Alexander Papadiamandis. The prayer canon of Theodore II spread first to nearby monasteries, becoming part of the divine services, and then throughout Byzantine Empire, and became known as the Great Prayer Canon.

The tradition of alternate reading of these two canons owes its appearance to one historical circumstance that took place in the empire in 1261. In this year, in the days of the reign of Michael VIII Palaiologos, without any bloodshed, the reconquest of Constantinople was carried out, which was considered a miraculous intervention of the Virgin. Therefore, Michael wished to solemnly enter the city and offer thanks to the Most Holy Theotokos. However, at that time, the Great Prayer Canon of Theodore II was sung in the churches, and it was necessary to find a solution how exactly to glorify the Mother of God. Then it was proposed to use the more ancient Small Prayer Canon to the Most Holy Theotokos. Since then, the Great Prayer Canon has been performed only during the Dormition Fast.

Thus, prayer canons are sung during the period between the two great church holidays, the Resurrection and the Nativity of Christ, in order to offer up prayers and petitions to the Most Holy Theotokos, our only intercessor to the Human-loving God, so that we may be granted mercy and strength to rise to our Golgotha and experience indescribable joy Resurrection. Because there is no Resurrection outside the Cross: it is given to us on the Cross.

Let us also give due praise to the Lady Theotokos, and ask her with the words of the famous preacher Ilias Miniatis (1669 - 1714): “Blessed, glorious Lady, from the inexhaustible Divine light, where You rejoice from now on, standing at the right hand of Your Only Begotten Son, send us, yours to the pious servants, the rays of this blessed light that will sanctify our darkened mind, and the flame of our chilled will, so that we learn to properly follow the path of holy justifications. We, after God, on You, the Mother of God and our Mother, place our hopes for salvation, the triumph of peaceful power, the victory of pious kings, the establishment of the Church, the care of the Orthodox family and the protection of its pious residence, dedicated to Your invincible help.

Blessed Virgin Mary, Thy name is the joy, consolation, glory of Christians, accept the fast and the canons of these holy days, which we sang in Your honor, like favorable incense. Vouchsafe us who piously fall in church to Your miraculous icon and in Paradise to see Your blessed face, which we worship with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in the age of ages. Amen".

Canon of Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos

Troparion to the Theotokos, tone 4

Now diligently to the Theotokos, we are sinners and humility, and we fall down, calling in repentance from the depths of our souls: Lady, help us, having mercy on us, we are perishing from many sins, do not turn away Your servants of vanity, You and the only hope of the imam. (Twice)

We will never be silent, O Theotokos, to speak unworthy of Your strength: otherwise You would not be praying, who would save us from so many troubles, who would keep us free until now? We will not retreat, O Lady, from Thee: for Thy servants save forever from all kinds of fierce ones.

Psalm 50

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy mercies, cleanse my iniquity. First of all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin; for I know my iniquity, and my sin before me is taken out. I have sinned against you alone and done evil before you; as if you were justified in your words, and conquered the judgment of Ty. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and in sins give birth to me, my mother. Behold, thou hast loved the truth; the unknown and secret wisdom of Thy revealed to me. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be cleansed; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Give joy and joy to my hearing; the bones of the humble shall rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins and cleanse all my iniquities. Create a pure heart in me, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Restore to the world the joy of Your salvation and confirm me with the Sovereign Spirit. I will teach the wicked in Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from blood, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue shall rejoice in thy righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will proclaim your praise. As if you would have desired sacrifices, you would have given them: you do not favor burnt offerings. Sacrifice to God the spirit is broken; a contrite and humble heart God will not despise. Please, O Lord, with Thy favor Zion, and let the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, an offering and a burnt offering; then they will lay calves on your altar.
