During the defense of Chapaev, he was very wounded in the stomach, his soldiers put the commander on the raft and crossed through the Urals, but he died of blood loss. The body was buried in the coastal sand, and the traces were hidden to make the Cossacks. To seek the grave later it became useless, as the river changed the river. This story confirmed the participant of events. According to another version, being wounded in hand, Chapaev drowned without coping with the flow.

Neither the body nor the grave of Chapaeva could find. This gave rise to a very logical version of the surviving hero. Someone said that because of heavily injured, he lost his memory and lived somewhere under a different name.

Some argued that he was safely crossed on the other side, from where he headed for Frunze, to respond to the city surrender. In Samara, he was planted for arrest, and after they decided to officially "kill the hero", completing his military career with a beautiful end.

This story was told by a certain onyanov from the Tomsk region, which, allegedly, met his commander who took place. The story looks doubtful because in the difficult conditions of the Civil War it was impractical "scattered" by experienced military leaders who enjoyed great respect from the soldiers.

Most likely, this is a myth generated by the hope that the hero was saved.
