How to connect the Internet from a router to a computer (laptop) via a network cable? We connect the Internet on a laptop: all possible ways

01.10.2017 10:27:00

You can connect the Internet to a PC using a cell phone in 3 main ways:

  • Use your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Set your phone as a usb modem
  • Create connection on PC via phone

Let's take a closer look at each of these methods.

Phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot

The easiest way to connect your computer to the Internet using a mobile gadget is to turn your mobile phone into a wireless hotspot. We will tell you how to do this using a smartphone on Android sixth version.

Open the settings, click on "More" and select "Modem mode". Next, you need to select the "Wi-Fi access point" item. After you turn on the access point, the name of this point and the password for entering will appear. You can also set up a WPS connection for safe Internet access. The system will ask you to choose one of two connection modes: by pressing a button or via a PIN code.

Here you can see the number of connected or blocked users.

The last step is to set up the wireless network in your PC settings. If everything is done correctly, start the mobile Internet on your device, and the computer will see your phone as an access point. All that remains is to enter the password and you can work.

Please note that there are two significant drawbacks to connecting a computer via an access point on a phone:

  • The Hotspot feature puts a heavy load on the battery, so your Android phone runs out of power pretty quickly.
  • The computer must be equipped with a Wi-Fi module. Therefore, this method is suitable, for the most part, for laptops.

Connect your phone to your computer as a usb modem

The second method by which you can connect a computer to the Internet is more complicated, but it is suitable for both a stationary PC and a laptop, while a Wi-Fi module is not required. Let's analyze this method step by step:

Step 1. You need to connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable.

Step 2. The computer will inform you that the necessary drivers have been installed, and a window will appear on the phone screen with a choice of usb connection. Click Cancel.

Step 3. In the phone settings, you need to select the "More" item, then click "Modem mode". Here you need to click on the button that turns on the usb modem.

Step 4. The computer will start installing the required drivers. You will need to allow the connection to the modem that the phone has turned into and specify the type of connection. After that, the Internet on the computer will be connected.

As a rule, the modem driver is installed in the memory of the smartphone itself. Sometimes such software can be included on the disc bundled with the device. We also draw the attention of those who use a computer with an operating system older than Windows 7. To connect to the Internet via a cell phone in this way, you will have to download and install all the necessary drivers yourself.

Create a new PC connection for your phone

You can access the Internet from your computer via your phone by creating a new connection. This method also consists of several steps:

Step 1. Connect your phone to computer via USB cable. As described above, the system itself will install all the necessary drivers from the gadget's memory.

Step 2. Next, you need to create a new Internet connection. Open "Control Panel" on your computer, then select "Internet and Network" and click on "Network and Sharing Center". Here you need to select the line "Setting up a new network connection". After that, the dialog box "Establish a network connection" should appear. Here you need to click on the line "Phone connection settings", and then on the "Next" button.

Step 3. The system will now ask for your username and password about the service provider and the number to be dialed. Typically, this is * 9 ** # or * 99 #.

If everything is done correctly, it remains to press the "Connect" button, after which the computer will gain access to the Internet via a mobile phone. If you managed to do everything correctly, then the PC will connect to the Internet.

This method also has a couple of disadvantages:

  • The quality and speed of connection depends on the service provider
  • If the owner of the phone uses a non-fixed tariff, connecting through a new hotspot can quickly empty the mobile account.

One way or another, all three ways by which you can connect your computer to the Internet using your phone are designed for full-fledged work on the Internet. You just have to make sure that the smartphone is charged and that there are enough funds in the account.

The last lesson of the second step of our tutorial will be devoted to how to set up parental controls on a smartphone. Do not miss!

Every modern person uses the privileges of the world wide web. At the same time, few people think about the principles of operation and connection. However, this knowledge may affect your ability to work or play online from your laptop. After all, it is not always possible to call the setup wizard. We will help you figure out on your own how to connect the Internet to a laptop.

First, you should choose the most suitable way to connect your computer to the Internet. This can be done wirelessly or wired:

  • using a cable;
  • using a router;
  • using a Wi-Fi network.

The first method allows you to achieve the highest data transfer rate when connected. But its main disadvantage is that the portable computer will cease to be such. You will have to find the point closest to the connection point, or buy an ultra-long wire. The second option also has its drawbacks, since the cable will interfere with free movement around the room.

As a rule, for wired Internet, all settings are entered by the wizard. But when reinstalling the operating system, it may be necessary to re-enter them. To do this, you need to perform the following actions:

  • connect the cable to the PC;
  • open the list of networks through the control panel;
  • you need to set up a new connection - the second option;
  • enter the login and password provided by the provider.

Setting up a wireless connection: router and Wi-Fi

The easiest way to connect to the global network is using Wi-Fi. This is possible if the room already has a configured router. In just a few minutes, you will have a quality wireless connection. What is needed for this?

  • Turn on the wireless transmission module on your PC.
  • Find the Network Connections tab, which is in the Control Panel folder.
  • Turn on your wireless connection.
  • You may need to enter an access password before connecting wireless internet to your laptop. You can connect to an open network without a password.

An equally important question is how to connect an internet router to a laptop. Using our recommendations, everyone can cope with this task.

So, turn off your router. Connect the cable directly to the laptop through the appropriate connector. Then find the "Network and Sharing Center" in the Windows menu.

Select the properties of the local area connection. You need the fourth version of the protocol. An inscription with numbers appeared? Copy them, this is Static IP. Select the function of obtaining IP automatically.

Next, in the built-in browser of the operating system, insert a sequence of numbers (exactly in the format with dots and without spaces) 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into the address bar. A menu will appear in which you need to enter "admin" in the login and password fields (look for the login password on the router itself, often on a sticker next to the mac address). Choose a dynamic IP and click "Next". Enter the hotspot name and wi-fi password.

If your laptop still does not connect to the router, we recommend that you consult a specialist.

In any case, the laptop can be connected to the Internet in a few minutes. If you have any problems with your connection or internet speed, please contact Wifire specialists. Our company is guaranteed to provide you with a high quality connection.

There is no doubt that today a wireless connection to the Internet based on the use of ADSL modems is becoming more widespread. But sometimes (and very often) it is necessary to configure the connection bypassing such devices, using for this a direct connection of the computer to the ISP via a cable. We will talk about how to connect the Internet via a cable on a computer. Immediately it is worth considering some of the nuances, as well as the appearance of possible problems, errors or failures of the connection being created, which will be considered separately.

How to connect the Internet via a cable on a computer: what is needed for this?

The main and prerequisite, without which it will be simply impossible to carry out what was conceived, is the presence of an installed network adapter on the computer or laptop, for which all the necessary drivers must be installed (sometimes they may need to be updated to the latest versions).

Of course, any of the latest Windows operating systems installs such drivers on their own (either during its initial installation, or when a new connected device is detected), but if you have an original disk with a set of such control software, it is better to install the "native" device drivers exactly from this set.

Only in this case, the performance of the network card will be fully guaranteed. We will consider issues related to updating drivers a little later, but running a little ahead, it should be said that it is not recommended to update using the system means (it will be clear why later).

The second point is related to the cable used, which will be connected directly to the corresponding port of the network card. These cables have RJ-45 connectors. Finally, the user must have signed an agreement with the provider company, which not only provides access to the Internet, but also gives a preliminary list of all the basic settings and addresses that will need to be registered on their own if the support specialist does not do this.

In general, by and large, if you figure out how to connect the Internet on a computer via a cable from a router or modem, there is nothing particularly complicated here. If desired, any user who has even the slightest idea of the basics of working with Windows systems can perform such operations on their own. And this whole process will take only a few minutes. Why was it mentioned in this case that you can use a cable from the router? Yes, only because it is completely identical to standard power cords that are available in any specialty store.

How do I access the network presets on different systems?

So, we seem to have decided on the equipment. Now let's take a look at some basic settings and how to access them in different Windows modifications. If we talk about how to connect the Internet on a computer via a cable from a router to Windows XP, in this system, access to network parameters can be obtained directly from the start menu, in which there is a corresponding item in a separate category. Later versions also have it, but it is not in the main list, but in the utilities section. In Windows 10, the easiest way is to use RMB on the start button, where the desired section will be shown in the list. In general, for all systems without exception, you can use a universal tool in the form of a "Control Panel", in which you need to go to the section for managing networks and sharing, after which you will need to refer to the link for changing the properties of the network adapter.

In this case, we are interested in the one for which Ethernet or "Local Area Connection" is indicated in the description.

Difference between dynamic and static IP addresses

Let's leave aside the questions regarding how to connect the Internet via a cable to a computer, and look at one important nuance. Usually providers offer to use two types of addresses to create a connection: static and dynamic. The difference between them is not as great as it might seem at first glance. A static address is assigned to each individual computer and does not change during Internet access, that is, it is constant. The dynamic address is changed at each session (its new value is set).

Some people mistakenly think that this is akin to Nothing of the sort! VPN clients or proxy servers simply change external addresses so that the user's machine cannot be identified by geographic location, and have nothing to do with internal addresses. The change of address is made with the selection of the currently unused IP from the available addresses of the provider itself, which in no way affects the change in the regional location. But which one to choose if the provider really offers to use either one or the other? It is believed that the best communication quality is provided exclusively when setting a static address, so choose this option, although dynamic addresses look a little simpler in configuration.

How to connect the Internet on a computer via a cable in Windows 7 and other systems: a standard method for setting up a connection

To establish an Internet connection, first of all, you need to call the properties item through the PCM on the selected network adapter, and then go to the IPv4 protocol settings. The fields for addresses must be filled in according to the list provided by the provider.

However, if you do not have it for some reason, or you have lost it, in the IP field for the static address write a combination, say, 192.168.1.3, the subnet mask is almost always 255.255.255.0, and in the gateway field, write 192.168. 1.1. For dynamic IPs, if provided, you can set to receive all addresses in automatic mode.

Just below, you should fill in the fields for the addresses of the primary and alternate DNS servers. They will have to be checked with the provider. If that turns out to be impossible, that's okay. Set it up automatically or use free combinations like those from Google above that work just as well. Then just save the changes, just in case, reboot and check the Internet access.

Note: especially when setting up, pay attention to the point of disabling proxy for local addresses, if the use of a server of this type is not provided by the provider, otherwise there may be problems with the connection.

Setting up a high-speed connection

Now, briefly about how to connect to the Internet via a cable on a computer, if you intend to configure a high-speed PPPoE connection. In this case, in the network management section, you first need to create a new connection, and then specify its type.

It will be either PPPoE for direct communication with the provider without using network devices, or dial-up in the case of using modems, for example, 3G / 4G standards. After that, you need to enter a username with a password and specify a new name for the created connection. After completing all the procedures, you just need to press the connect button.

What to look for when using a router?

As for the routers, we will not dwell on them, since in this material the wireless connection is not considered.

However, it is worth noting that many modern models can be used as modems, therefore, first in the device's web interface, after logging in through any web browser, the router must be switched to modem mode.

Internet setup issues when using the services of the operator "Rostelecom"

Finally, as an example, let's look at how to configure the Internet on a computer via a Rostelecom cable, step by step.

In principle, the IPv4 protocol does not differ much from everything described, and it may look like the one shown in the image above, but taking into account the input of the addresses that are present in the service contract and the activation of the IPv6 protocol. There shouldn't be any difficulties here.

Now, briefly about how to configure the Internet on a computer via a Rostelecom cable in Windows 7 or any other system, if a router and a PPPoE connection are used. Go to the router's web interface (192.168.1.1), use admin / admin as the login and password, specify PPPoE in the connection type, enter the login and password from the contract (not to be confused with authorizing access to the router settings), and most importantly - in in the VPI / VCI parameters, set your region. When finished, save your changes and reboot your modem / router.

Possible problems and their elimination

As for possible errors in establishing communication, it is impossible to foresee everything. But as a first step, use the following techniques:

  • check if the IP address and gateway are entered correctly;
  • replace the default values for DNS with combinations from Google;
  • disable the use of proxies;
  • update the network card drivers (it is best to use automated programs like Driver Booster);
  • temporarily disable antivirus and firewall;
  • delete the existing connection and recreate it.

If all else fails, invoke the Windows troubleshooter and use the tips to remedy the situation. If that doesn't help, contact your internet service provider directly.

As a rule, most of the problems arise when connecting to a router over a wireless network. And connecting via a network cable should not cause any difficulties. But, I have already met similar questions several times, and decided to write a small instruction with a photo, in which I will tell you how to connect a computer (or laptop) to the router using a LAN cable.

And what to write about here, they took a cable, connected it to a router, then to a computer, and everything is ready. But still, it may come in handy for someone.

As a rule, modern routers have 4 LAN connectors. This means that you can connect 4 devices via a network cable. And they will all receive Internet from a router, or work in a local network. By the way, read the article on setting up a local network.

We will need:

  • A router with a free LAN connector (it is yellow).
  • Network cable. A small cable is included with the router. But, if you need a longer cable, you can make it yourself. How to do this, I wrote in the article. Or just go to a computer store and ask to crimp the network cable to the length you need.
  • Computer with network card (usually integrated into the motherboard)... Well, or a laptop, a netbook with an RJ-45 network connector.

Let's get started 🙂

We take our network cable, it looks like this (you may have a slightly different one, I will enter a different length):

We connect one end of the cable to the yellow connector (LAN) of our router.

It doesn't matter which of the four connectors you plug the cable into.

Now we connect the other end of the cable to our computer, or laptop.

This is what the network connector looks like on a computer:

After connecting the network cable, one of the four indicators on the router should light up, which indicate the connection to the LAN connector.

Now we look at the computer screen. If on the notification panel (bottom, right) you see this connection status (as in the screenshot below) then all is well. The internet is already working.

But, in such a seemingly simple way, problems can also arise. Now we will consider some of the most popular ones.

Problems connecting the computer to the router via a network cable

After connecting, the status on the notification panel may not change, you will see the computer crossed out with a red cross.

In this case, first of all, you need to check the cable with which you connected the computer to the router. How to do it? For example, you can take another cable, or the cable that runs the Internet directly to the computer. If this connection status changes (even if a yellow triangle appears) then the problem is in the cable. Perhaps there is something gone. Just change it.

It is possible that the network card is simply disabled. Let's check. Go to and find there LAN connection... If the status next to it Disabled then right-click on this connection and select Turn on.

If a connection such as No LAN connection at all, it is most likely that the driver is simply not installed on your network card. Download and install the driver. If there was a disc included with the computer (laptop), then most likely it contains this driver.

Plugged in the cable, but the connection without internet access

And this can be. This problem looks like this:

First, you need to determine what the problem is. This could be due to a problem on the router side. See the article on this issue.

But I'll tell you in a simple way. If other devices are working normally from this router, and the Internet is on them, then most likely the problem is on the computer itself. It's clear:).

And as a rule, this problem is one.

Go back to Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Network Connections and right click on Local Area Connection. Please select properties... Then highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4) and press the button again Properties.

Set to get IP and DNS automatically and click OK.

The presence of the Internet on a computer is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. The worldwide network for many is study and work, cinema and play, communication and storage of important files. Therefore, the question of how to connect the Internet via a computer is very relevant for all users.

If you do not yet have access to the World Wide Web, it's time to think about it and first learn how to connect your computer to the Internet in Yekaterinburg. Deciding on is the first thing to do. There are many options: cable networks, satellite communications, mobile networks or telephone lines. It all depends on the technical capabilities and desires of the user.

Not very convenient, but quite simple and the option of a high-speed connection is available through a cable extended into the room, which is connected to a network card. The setting depends on the provider and the technologies they use. Most often, authorization is required.

For an internal network connecting home or office stations, the best solution would be to connect the Internet via a cable and router. This method easily and simply connects several computers with each other, providing an opportunity for everyone to access the Internet and the free exchange of information between them.

Internet connection to two computers via cable, modem or router

The above describes how to connect your computer to the Internet. But it often happens that there are other devices that need access to the global network. It is inconvenient to constantly plug the cable or cord from the modem. In addition, sometimes access to the network is needed simultaneously from all devices. Therefore, let's see how to connect two computers to the Internet. There are three options for making such a connection.

  • First option. The second computer is connected to the World Wide Web via a modem using a wire. The modem connected to the provider of your choice must be correctly configured. A network wire is pulled from the modem to the computer and inserted into any free Lan-socket. If the system does not detect the modem and the Internet connection is not established, you may need to update the driver of the computer's network card. You can find drivers on the Internet or on the disk supplied with your computer. This is one of the simplest methods, but it requires additional wires to be laid around the apartment, which is not always suitable for users.
  • Second option. We bring the computer to the world network using a router and a Wi-Fi network. Such a connection of the second machine to the Internet requires a router that distributes wi-fi. It is connected to the provider's modem or cable, and the Internet gets to the second computer via Wi-Fi. A stationary machine will require an adapter, internal or external.
  • The third option. The second machine is connected via the main computer using a cable or Wi-Fi. In this case, you will have to purchase a Wi-Fi module that connects to the first computer. A wireless network is created through which Internet traffic is distributed to the second computer. Alternatively, it is allowed to connect computers with a wire. In this case, a local network is formed, where the first computer acts as a server that distributes information from the Internet.

It is up to you to decide how to connect two computers via the Internet. Much depends on the technical and financial capabilities, on the location of computers, on the number of devices that will connect to the Internet.
