Who drinks how much in the world. The spread of alcoholism in the world with a ranking of countries. What else to see

There is not a single country in the world in which alcohol is not consumed at all. Even where its sale is limited, citizens find ways to serve the "green serpent". But of course, drinking alcohol becomes drunkenness only when the amount exceeds a reasonable rate. In which countries do they drink the most, according to the rating in 2019?

World Beer Ranking 2019 according to WHO

The World Health Organization (abbreviated - WHO) regularly conducts research related to the health of the world's population and publishes rankings. The issue of alcoholism is no exception. According to the organization, alcohol is one of the three main causes that directly or indirectly increase mortality. At the same time, in general, the number of consumed alcoholic beverages per capita is increasing from year to year. Information on the amount of alcohol consumed comes to WHO from organizations that control its sale.

Contrary to popular belief, large amounts of alcohol are not consumed because of poverty. This can be seen from the ranking above, where only a small fraction of the seats are held by developing countries. According to the WHO, a number of European countries have consistently high rates. The reason for this is low employment and affordable alcohol in countries with high living standards. According to experts, every fifth resident of a developed country is a chronic alcoholic.

The leading countries of the rating are knocked out of the general picture both for reasons of drunkenness and for its unexpected spread. In Ukraine, due to political changes and economic instability, the alcohol market is almost not controlled. These reasons serve to increase the number of drinking people. In Belarus, in recent years, the system of combating alcoholism that existed before has practically been eliminated. True, in mid-2018, the country's government decided to launch a new large-scale anti-alcohol campaign.

Top Drinking Countries: University of Washington and Melissa Gates Foundation Statistics

Not only WHO conducts research: at the beginning of 2019, American scientists compiled their rating of alcohol drinkers, which was published in the medical journal Lancet. Data across countries differ depending on the gender of the person who drinks alcohol. The conventional unit of measurement has become "drink" - 100 milliliters of red wine or 30 - strong alcohol.

On average in the world, representatives of the stronger sex drink 1.7 drinks per day, that is, 170 ml of wine or 51 ml of stronger alcohol. The first three places in terms of the number of men's booze are occupied by:

  • Romania - 8.2 conventional drinks per day (820 ml of wine or 246 ml of spirits);
  • Portugal and Luxembourg - 7.2 drinks per day (720 ml of wine or 216 ml of spirits);
  • Lithuania and Ukraine - 7 drinks per day (700 ml of wine or 210 spirits).

For women, the statistics are much more modest: on average, beautiful ladies of the planet consume 0.73 drinks per day, which is equivalent to 73 ml of wine or 21.9 ml of strong alcohol. Dominated by the number of alcohol consumed by women:

  • Ukraine - 4.2 drinks per day (420 ml of wine or 126 ml of spirits);
  • Andorra, Luxembourg, Belarus - 3.4 drinks per day (340 ml of wine or 120 ml of strong alcohol);
  • Sweden, Denmark, Ireland - 3.1 drinks per day (310 ml of wine or 93 ml of spirits).

Interestingly, according to the University of Washington, the most sober men live in Pakistan, and women in Iran.

The most drinking countries in the world are our neighbors and European states. However, in Russia they still drink a lot. But the inhabitants of the American continents have not been noticed in excessive drinking.

Alcohol has long been considered an integral part of life for most people. Since then, little has changed. And even more, every year the number of people drinking only increases. Alcohol is drunk on holidays, on vacation, corporate parties. Some drink it purely symbolically, while others get drunk to the point of feeling insensible.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a list of countries by the amount of alcohol consumed for 2017-2018 has been compiled. So, the 12 most drinking countries in the world!

1: Belarus

Belarus is the most drinking country in the world.

According to the World Health Organization, over the past year, more Ukrainians and Russians drank only in Belarus. Here, each resident drinks an average of 17.5 liters. alcohol per year. Moreover, spirits are preferred by 47% of people, beer, only 17%, other alcohol -32%, but very little wine - 4%. Women also like to drink, on average, 7 liters. in year. These figures are official, but the real ones, presumably, are much higher, since they could not get data on home brewing in conservative Belarus.

2: Ukraine

In Ukraine, there are 17.4 liters of alcohol per person per year. The alcohol market is very poorly regulated in the country, so the number of young people addicted to alcohol is increasing. Vodka and beer are the most popular spirits, followed by wine. Ukrainians prefer to drink wines of domestic producers, mainly because of the affordable cost, in comparison with European brands.

3: Estonia

In third place on the list is Estonia. The national drink is Old Tallinn. Despite the fact that the capital of the country has received the title of "City of Culture" many times, Estonians drink even more than Russians: 17.2 liters. per person in year. Of the alcoholic drinks, beer is preferred here. It costs $ 3 a glass, ale or other alcohol costs about $ 5. Locals love to spend time in crowded bars. It will be interesting for a tourist to visit the Old Town, where there are many stylized restaurants.

4: Czech Republic

The national drink is Becherovka. A resident of the Czech Republic drinks an average of 16.4 liters per year. strong drink. Beer accounts for almost 160 liters. per person Beer in this country is part of the culture; it has been brewed here for many centuries. The world famous Czech brands Velkopopovicky Kozel, Radegast and Pilsner are classics of beer varieties. There are many pubs selling draft beer, and in Prague there is a restaurant that is more than five centuries old! Here you will taste Czech cuisine, different types of beer (dark, light, coffee, banana) and feel the atmosphere of old Bohemia. The state is actively investing in the wine industry. Czech wines are called Moravian, as most of the vineyards grow in Moravia.

5: Lithuania

According to the Director of the Department of Noncommunicable Chronic Diseases and the Promotion of Healthy Lifestyles of the WHO European Office, in Lithuania, one citizen consumes on average 16 liters of alcohol. As a WHO spokesman told reporters:

“This, according to the latest estimates, makes it (Lithuania) one of the most drinking countries in the world.

6: Russia

During 2017-2018, alcohol consumption by the population decreased slightly, but the country still entered the ranking of the most drinkers in the world. The average Russian drinks 15.1 liters a year. alcohol. Women consume half as much - 7.8 liters. The national drink is vodka. In Russia, they give more preference to vodka and beer, the purely Russian habit of choosing "white" has spread to other post-Soviet states, such as Moldova, Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc. It is in these countries that a person is more inclined, drinking alcohol, to reach a state of extreme intoxication , as soon as possible. Russia's getting into the rating of the most drinking countries is largely due to the relatively low cost of alcohol, in comparison with Europe - $ 4 per half liter and a low standard of living. Recently, the number of Russians who prefer wine to other spirits has increased.

7: France

In France, the consumption of pure alcohol per person per year is 14.2 liters. Only one beer in the country is drunk annually per capita 35.5 liters. The image of the Frenchman is quite traditional - these people slowly sip wine, enjoying every sip. In America, the French are considered saturated snobs, but even there they cannot deny the fact that the "frogs" have such an excellent taste. In this country, in addition to wine, they are well versed in food. In general, in France, exquisite wine goes hand in hand with delicious food, these two concepts are inseparable here, like a baguette and brie cheese. It can be said more simply - rarely when a meal is not accompanied by a drink of wine.

8: Germany

The national drink is schnapps. On average, the Germans consume 11.7 liters. alcoholic beverages. Especially beer is held in high esteem, which is cheap by local standards. The country is deservedly included in the list of the most drinking countries in the world, since alcohol is sold everywhere: in shops, at gas stations, in kiosks with newspapers. The Germans are liberal, drinking beer in the park on a bench and in other public places is not prohibited. There are many beer festivals in Germany that last from a couple of days to two weeks. More than 12 million people attend Oktoberfest, the harvest festival, and beer costs up to $ 13 per liter.

You won't be able to get drunk in this country, alcohol is expensive: the average price of a glass of beer in bars is $ 6, and a bottle of whiskey can cost as much as 30 euros.

10: Portugal

The Portuguese drink approximately 11.4 liters. alcohol for 1 person in year. The national drink is port, but more often they drink wine and beer. Portuguese winemakers are proud of their vineyards. This country prefers wine more, followed by beer, which is much cheaper: you will have to pay almost $ 3.5 for a large glass of beer in a supermarket.

11: Hungary

The next line in the ranking of the most drinking countries in the world is Hungary. Here they drink 100 g more - 10.8 liters. per person per year. The country is famous for its wines, Hungary has many vineyards and 22 wine-making regions. Wine is drunk here, mainly in bars, where it costs from $ 2 per glass. In Slovenia, they often drink beer and wine, both are not cheap by European standards: the average cost of a half-liter bottle is $ 2.15. They love national drinks here: wine from their own ancient vineyards, beer of the Slovenian brand Union and Lasko.

Finally, I would like to add - take care of your health. And if you, nevertheless, want to drink, then buy high-quality alcoholic drinks and most importantly, do not abuse alcohol!

MOSCOW, May 10 - RIA Novosti, Maxim Rubchenko. The Ministry of Health estimates that alcohol consumption in Russia has dropped by almost 40 percent since 2006. The World Health Organization, in turn, states that today the average Russian drinks 3.5 liters of alcohol less per year than ten years ago. What is behind these indicators and in which countries they drink the most - in the material of RIA Novosti.

Statistics Games

The widespread belief that Russians are the most alcoholic drinkers in the world is increasingly at odds with reality. The consumption of alcoholic beverages in the country has been declining for many years, and at a rapid pace. The data of different departments differ somewhat - the WHO says about 13.9 liters per capita per year, the Ministry of Health and Rospotrebnadzor - about ten liters. In January, Russian Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova announced that over the past five to seven years, alcohol consumption has been reduced by 80 percent. Be that as it may, everyone agrees that in Russia every year they drink less and less, and this trend has been continuing for more than ten years.

In 2017 alone, alcohol consumption decreased by 0.3 liters - this is one and a half bottles of vodka (0.5 liters of alcohol), 4.5 liters of dry wine or 10 liters of light beer.

As a result, Russia is no longer even among the top three most drinking countries (Lithuania - 18.2 liters, Belarus - 16.4 liters, Moldova - 15.9 liters), ranking fourth and just slightly ahead of Romania, Czech Republic, Croatia, Bulgaria ...

According to WHO estimates, consumed in Russia, 13.9 liters of alcohol per capita are equivalent to 34.75 liters of vodka. According to the Tsenomer portal, the average price of vodka today is 693 rubles per liter. This means that on average 24,081 rubles are spent on drinking. The average salary in 2017 is 35,845 rubles per month (430 thousand per year). This means that Russians spend 5.9 percent of their income on alcohol. That is, more than in the most problematic countries of the European Union in terms of drunkenness, and three times more than the average European.

On the other hand, the average salary in Estonia is 1242 euros per month, or 5.6 percent, which is 835 euros.

However, Märt Leesment, chief analyst at the Estonian Statistics Department, claims that the average Estonian adult spends only 108 euros a year on alcohol, that is, seven times less. It is impossible to understand who is right, the Estonian Department of Statistics or Eurostat, but it is clear that such ratings should not be taken too seriously.

Unexpected findings

"For the first time, the population of several countries was studied in terms of lifestyle, health, and working conditions," Professor of Sociology at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and Technology Terje Andreas Eikemu explained to the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten.

Some of the results were quite unexpected. In particular, it turned out that the wealthy and educated drink more than people with a low social status.

"Alcohol consumption in general seems to be associated with higher education," notes Eikemu. "This distinguishes alcohol, for example, from smoking, which is common exclusively in the lower strata of society. However, wealthy people drink 'right', problematic alcohol consumption is more common in the lower strata." ...

Another unexpected conclusion is that alcohol consumption begins to affect human health rather late in comparison with other factors. "Living conditions are more important and can tell us why we drink the way we drink," says Eikemu. "Problematic alcohol consumption destroys both the person and his family, but is rarely the main cause of destruction."

In addition, experts assure that bans (for example, on the sale of alcohol at a certain time) are not the best way to fight for a healthy lifestyle. “Our research has shown that for the overwhelming majority of countries it is more important to improve the well-being of citizens and improve working conditions,” states Eikemu. “The fight against drunkenness is, of course, important, but first we must provide a person with the opportunity to live with dignity. so that health care becomes a habit among people. "

The Russian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization are unlikely to agree with this conclusion, claiming that the reduction in alcohol consumption in Russia is due precisely to restrictions.

The Russian Ministry of Health believes that the ban on the retail sale of alcohol from 11:00 pm to 8:00 am, as well as the ban on alcoholic beverages in children's, educational, medical institutions and sports facilities have played an important role in the positive statistical changes.

Culture issue

For obvious reasons, problems with drunkenness do not arise in countries and regions where Islam is widespread. So, according to the WHO, the least alcohol consumed by citizens of Kuwait, Libya, Mauritania and Pakistan (0.1 liters per year per person), Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh (0.2 liters each), Egypt, Niger and Yemen (0 , 3 liters).

The same is in Russia. Experts of the federal project "Sober Russia" have compiled a rating of the most "sober" and most "drinking" regions of the country. Seats were allocated in accordance with points, which were set taking into account the volume of sales of all types of alcoholic products, the number of deaths from alcohol poisoning, crimes committed while drunk, citizens registered with a narcologist, violations in the sphere of alcohol circulation and hours of ban on the sale of alcohol during the day.

Moscow, December 8 - “Vesti. Economy". Belgium is famous for its beer culture. So, the team of experts counted about 1600 different types of beer in this country in 2015. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was the Belgians who came out on top in beer consumption among the 38 countries surveyed by Ipsos. Below is a list of countries with the highest alcohol consumption.

10.South Korea

Alcohol consumption: 9.33 liters of alcohol per person per year South Korea ranked ten in the ranking and became the most drinking country in Asia. It should be noted that Koreans traditionally consume a lot of alcohol, and among the most popular among them are soju or rice vodka. Also Koreans love rice or fruit wine and local beer. It is considered common among the local population to end the working day in one of the drinking establishments, so you can often meet drunk people on the streets of cities.

Alcohol consumption: 9.64 liters of alcohol per person per year Although excessive alcohol consumption is believed to lead to aggressive and rude behavior, Danes instead become very open-minded, friendly and loving. Danes are very tolerant of drunken behavior if it happens on weekends. A glass or two of wine with dinner during the working week will make you an alcoholic in the eyes of the locals, but 20 glasses on Saturday will be taken absolutely calmly.

8. Australia

Alcohol consumption: 9.70 liters of alcohol per person per year The Australian lifestyle is inextricably linked with drinking beer. It is this foamy drink, as well as wine, that accounts for the lion's share of alcohol consumption in the country. The biggest problem in Australia is the overuse of alcohol by Australian Aborigines, for whom drunkenness and alcoholism have become commonplace. Therefore, the state is taking rather tough measures to combat this problem.

Alcohol consumption: 10.12 liters of alcohol per person per year For three years now, there has been a tendency in the country to reduce the consumption of alcoholic beverages by the population. If in last year's rating our country was in the top 5, now it has dropped to 7th place in terms of alcohol consumption.

6.UK

Alcohol consumption: 10.66 liters of alcohol per person per year World-famous pubs and restaurants in the UK are rarely empty Although the UK is home to many world-famous alcoholic beverages, including whiskey and gin, beer is most drunk in the country, including native English drink - ale. Drinkers are not particularly persecuted in the country and according to the law.

Alcohol consumption: 10.71 liters of alcohol per person per year Poland has been climbing in similar rankings in recent years. It should be noted that Poles are big fans of all kinds of parties, and as the purchasing power of the population grows, so does the level of alcohol consumption.

4. Hungary

Alcohol consumption: 10.88 liters of alcohol per person per year Hungary is famous all over the world for its famous vineyards. Drinks of this particular country are preferred all over the world. In terms of popularity, in this state, the first line is occupied by beer, it is preferred by fifty-four percent of the population. Wine is on the second line, with twenty-eight percent. The top three are closed by strong alcoholic beverages, which are in demand among only eighteen percent of the local population.

3. Germany

Alcohol consumption: 11.03 liters of alcohol per person per year There is no doubt that Germany owes such a high place in the ranking of the most drinking countries to the consumption of beer. In addition, the country is quite loyal not only to drinking beer (beer and wine can be drunk from the age of 16), but also to the use of strong alcoholic beverages (allowed after 18 years). In the country, you can drink while driving, but the presence of ethanol in the blood should not exceed the norm of 0.3 ppm.

2. France

Alcohol consumption: 11.50 liters of alcohol per person per year Residents of a country where vineyards occupy 58 million hectares, which is equal to two Belgium in area, cannot but consume the results of their labors, because France is one of the largest producers of wine and wine products in the world. The traditions of drinking alcoholic beverages in the country, such as dry wine, champagne or cognac, have centuries-old roots, so the French regularly fall into the ratings of the most drinking countries in the world.

1. Belgium

Alcohol consumption: 12.60 liters of alcohol per person per year Among the countries of Western Europe, the highest rate of alcohol consumption was recorded in Belgium - 12.6 liters per year per capita over the age of 15 years. According to statistics, Belgian women drink on average more than two glasses of alcoholic beverages daily, men - more than three. At the same time, every third representative of the stronger sex over the age of 55 consumes alcohol every day and in excessive doses. Excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages is the cause of the premature death of 6% of the inhabitants of Belgium every year.

Chronic causes the development of pancreatitis in 60% of cases. 70% of murders and 62% of suicides are drunk. Despite this, per capita alcohol consumption is constantly growing.

In most cases, death occurs after consuming surrogate alcoholic beverages. The main consequences of excessive alcohol consumption include the birth of children with pathologies.

The Russian government has adopted a number of bills aimed at combating addiction and the spread of counterfeit alcoholic beverages:
