Han van Meegeren forgeries


This lie is a classic scenario for pleasing critics. This man was an artist, but he felt underappreciated. He believed he could do the trick to get art experts to recognize him as a genius.
In the early 20th century, scholars debated whether a series of works depicting biblical scenes was actually painted by the great Dutch artist Jan Vermeer. Van Meegeren immediately seized the opportunity and set to work, forging one of these controversial paintings called "Disciples at Emmaus." With relentless attention to detail, he faked cracks and skillfully aged his creation. He deliberately played on confirming the prejudices of critics who wanted to believe that these pictures were painted by Vermeer. And it worked: experts praised the paintings, recognizing them as authentic, and van Meegeren, meanwhile, began selling more and more counterfeit works of art. However, greed apparently surpassed his desire for praise, so he decided not to betray himself.
However, van Meegeren, who worked in the 1930s and 40s, made one major mistake. He sold one of his paintings to a prominent member of the Nazi Party in Germany. After the war, the Allies saw him as a conspirator selling "national treasures" to the enemy. In this regard, he had to reveal his secret in order to stay free. In order to prove that the painting sold to the German was not a national treasure, he forged another piece of art in the presence of the authorities.
He received a fairly light sentence, for a period of one year, but two months after the trial, he died of a heart attack.
Bernie Madoff's circuit


When Bernie Madoff admitted that his investment firm was "one big lie," he was cheating a little. In 2008, he described how he took possession of $ 50 billion from investors who entrusted him with their savings. Madoff has used the Ponzi scheme to keep his firm afloat for over 10 years.
This deception scheme is named after Charles Ponzi, who used similar tricks in the early 20th century. The system worked as follows: the combinator promises investors great benefits, but instead of investing money, he keeps some of it for himself, and uses the rest to pay off debts to other investors.
Madoff didn't invent this lie, he modified it a bit. First, he managed to fish out a record amount of money by following this scheme. He also managed to crank the circuit for a record amount of time. As a rule, such scams ended quickly, as it was always necessary to find more and more investors. In addition, this lie is especially shocking, since Madoff was quite a respected and authoritative expert in the financial field. Compare it to Charles Ponzi, who was a former prisoner when he came up with this scheme.
Fake Anastasia Anna Anderson


With the onslaught of the Russian revolution, the existence of the royal family sickened the policies of the Bolsheviks. In 1918, they destroyed the royal family of the Romanovs - Tsar Nicholas II, his wife, son and four daughters in order that in the future none of the heirs would revive public rallies in their support and in any way claim power.
Rumors soon surfaced that some members of the royal family had fled and survived. As expected, the appearance of "one of them" was not long in coming. Anna Anderson was the most famous of all the fake Anastasias. In 1920, Anderson was hospitalized after attempting to commit suicide, after regaining consciousness, she confessed to being Princess Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the royal family. She stood out among her similar false princesses in that she was very similar to the real Anastasia, knew many details about the family and life at court.
Despite the fact that a very small number of relatives and friends who knew Anastasia believed Anderson, the majority still considered her a liar. In 1927, a former roommate stated that her name sounded like Franziska Schanzkowska, not Anna, and certainly not Anastasia. But this did not stop Anderson, she continued to impersonate Anastasia in an attempt to cash in on this. Ultimately, she became completely confused in court proceedings that stretched out for decades, however, she did not back down her words until her death in 1984. Many years later, at an autopsy of what turned out to be the remains of the royal family, DNA analysis confirmed that she was lying. In 2009, experts finally confirmed that all the remains were found, and that not a single member of the royal family escaped execution in 1918.
Titus Oates conspiracy to assassinate Charles II


By the time Titus Oates conceived the conspiracy, he already had a tarnished reputation for deceit and trickery. He was dropped from several of England's finest schools, as well as from the command of the Navy. Oates was even convicted of perjury, but escaped imprisonment. However, his biggest lie was yet to come.
Raised as an Anabaptist preacher and being a Protestant, Oates went to Cambridge to study Anglican orders. After committing a misdemeanor, he was expelled, but began to move in Catholic circles, while bragging about his lack of education and pretending to be his own. With the support of fellow anti-Catholic Israel Tonge, he infiltrated "enemy territory" by entering a Catholic seminary. In fact, he entered two seminaries, but he was kicked out of both. But this is not important. By this time, he had gathered enough inside information and names to strike.
In 1678, Oates himself invented and allegedly himself and uncovered a conspiracy according to which the Jesuits planned the assassination of King Charles II. The idea was that they wanted to replace Charles with his Catholic brother James. After that, for about three more years, the panic did not subside, anti-Catholic sentiments were everywhere, and 35 people were executed.
After Charles died in 1685, James became ruler and put Oates on trial for libel. Oates was convicted, tied to a pillory and sentenced to prison. He managed to spend only a few years in prison when a revolution swept across England in 1688. James was dismissed, and Oates was pardoned and even given a pension.
Piltdown Man


After Charles Darwin published his revolutionary work "On the Origin of Species" in 1859, scientists tried their best to find fossil evidence of extinct human ancestors. They sought to find the so-called "missing links" in order to fill the gaps existing at that time on the timeline of human evolution. While archaeologist Charles Dawson believed he had found the missing link in 1910, he actually stumbled upon one of the biggest hoaxes in history.
The discovery was by a Piltdown man. Then, in the Piltdown quarry in Sussex (England), parts of the skull and a jaw with molars were found. Dawson brought his find to the famous paleontologist Arthur Smith Woodward, who talked about the authenticity of the remains until his death. Although this discovery became known to the whole world, however, the lie that was at the heart of everything gradually surfaced. In the decades that followed, other major finds proved that Piltdown man did not fit into the history of human evolution. In 1950, tests showed that the skull was only about 600 years old, and the jaw appeared to be that of an orangutan.
Some knowledgeable person skillfully arranged everything.
The scientific world was deceived. But who was behind all this scam? There were many suspects, including Dawson himself. Today, most experts are inclined to believe that it was Martin Hinton, the museum worker who was present when the remains were found.
The Dreyfus affair


Similar to the conspiracy invented by Titus Oates, this scandal was built on a lie that greatly influenced national politics, and the hatred generated by this lie persisted for a long period of time. Alfred Dreyfus was a Jewish officer in the French army in the late 19th century when he was accused of treason: selling military secrets to Germany.
Following widespread publicity of his case, authorities sentenced him to life imprisonment on the island of Devils, and anti-Semitic groups used his identity as an example of Jewish anti-state sentiment. Nevertheless, suspicions arose that the incriminating letters were in fact a fake, and the real culprit was Maj. Esterhazy. When the French authorities decided to hush up the case, the writer Emile Zola accused the army of covering up the criminal.
As a result, a scandal erupted between supporters of Dreyfus, who want to reopen the case, and his opponents. Moreover, both sides said little about the guilt or innocence of Dreyfus, it was more about principles. Over the 12-year period of confrontation, many anti-Semitic groups have disintegrated, and political priorities have changed.
After Major Hubert Joseph Henry was admitted to key case files and committed suicide, the newly elected Cabinet finally reopened the case. The court found Dreyfus guilty again, however, he later received a pardon from the president. A few years later, Dreyfus was found not guilty by a civil court of appeal, and he continued his military career and fought honorably in World War I. Meanwhile, this scandal has changed the face of French politics.
The Clinton and Lewinsky case


In January 1998, journalist Matt Drudge broke the news that turned out to be true. US President Bill Clinton had an affair with intern Monica Lewinsky. While everything was based only on suspicion, Clinton publicly denied the accusations, and he lied under oath and perjured, which served as the basis for impeachment.
And the truth surfaced as follows. Paula Jones was an employee of a regular firm in Arkansas when then Governor Bill Clinton allegedly harassed her. She later sued him for sexual harassment. In an attempt by lawyers to prove Clinton's guilt, they contacted former White House secretary and Lewinsky confidant Linda Tripp. Tripp had tapes of telephone conversations with Monica, where she talked about her affair with Clinton. The lawyers then pursued Clinton, asking numerous questions, and in the end forced him to tell the truth under oath, which, of course, he did not.
During the highly publicized case, Attorney Kenneth Starr was summoned to court, and Clinton finally confessed. Based on Starr's report, the House of Representatives voted to impeach Clinton not only for perjury, but also for obstruction of justice. Despite the scandal, Clinton's rating among the American public is quite high at the present time. The Senate later dropped the charges against him. However, in the eyes of many Americans, his reputation remained tarnished.
Watergate scandal


Two decades before the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, another American president fell into a web of lies that had a devastating effect on the country.
In the summer, shortly before the successful re-election of President Richard Nixon to a second term, five men were caught breaking into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, which was located in the Watergate Hotel. When details of the case surfaced the following year, it became clear that officials close to Nixon had ordered the installation of listening equipment there. Then the question arose as to whether Nixon knew about the case, whether he covered them up, or whether he planned the case himself.
In response to the suspicions raised against him, Nixon claimed that he knew nothing and that he was not a fraud. However, this lie has returned. When it was revealed that private conversations of the White House were also being recorded, the Investigative Committee released the tapes. Nixon's "executive privilege" refusal to release the contents of the conversation brought the case to the US Supreme Court, which ordered disclosure of the contents of the conversations.
In the end, it turned out that Nixon knew much more about the case than he spoke. Following the initiation of impeachment, Nixon resigned. This scandal left an indelible imprint on American politics and helped to come to the presidency a few years later, to put it mildly, not the most successful person, Jimmy Carter.
The Big Lie: Nazi Propaganda


By the time Nazism arose in Germany in the 1930s, anti-Semitism was nothing new. Even then, Jews suffered from a centuries-old history of persecution and infringement of their rights. And although the Nazis perpetuated their theory, this time the lie had the most devastating consequences. More than ever, anti-Semitism began to manifest itself in large-scale national politics that called for the removal of Jews from the face of the earth.
To achieve this goal, Adolf Hitler and his propaganda minister, Joseph Goebbels, launched a massive campaign to convince the German people that Jews are enemies. With complete control over the press, they blamed the Jews for all of Germany's problems, including the defeat in the First World War. They also argued that in the Middle Ages, Jews practiced ritual murders of Christian children and used their blood to make bread for Passover.
By portraying the Jewish nation as the scapegoat, Hitler and his henchmen orchestrated a "big lie." This theory says that regardless of the scale of the lie, a person will believe in it if it is repeated repeatedly. Hitler said that all people tell a small lie, however, very few people decide on a colossal one. Because a big lie seems so unreal, people will surely believe it. So Hitler reasoned.
This theory helps us understand why there have been so many lies throughout history.
