What is cement waterproofing, main types: coating, polymer, methods of application. Polymer waterproofing Roll roofing waterproofing material and the advantages of its use

APPLICATION OF CEMENT-POLYMER WATERPROOFING TYPE

Quality cement itself has some waterproofing properties. However, an ordinary cement-sand mortar is difficult to make so that there are no pores at all in it, through which moisture penetrates. Special cement-polymer waterproofing compositions are devoid of these disadvantages.

The composition of cement-polymer mixtures includes three components:

  • The binder (binder) is a high-quality cement that ensures the strength of the composition and is largely water repellent.
  • The filler is fine quartz sand.
  • Polymer additives. Provide increased adhesion of the composition to the base, penetrating deep into the surface of the concrete and crystallizing in its structure, firmly binding the base to the applied coating. Increases the hydrophobic properties of the cement composition.

Cement-polymer compositions in comparison with bitumen-polymer insulation have a number of advantages:

  1. They can (and even should) be applied to a damp surface. The composition adheres well not only to dry, but also to wet concrete. At the same time, the bitumen insulation will simply be torn off the surface when the water backs up (from the inside of the concrete).
  2. The adhesion (strength of adhesion to the surface) of cement (mineral) waterproofing is higher than that of bitumen-polymer. The compositions adhere perfectly to concrete, brick (including sand-lime brick) metal and wooden surfaces. Mineral insulation has high mechanical strength and abrasion resistance.
  3. The surface treated with cement waterproofing can be finished two weeks after the application of the composition without any additional preparation. Glue tiles, plaster, putty, paint - finishing materials adhere perfectly to mineral substrates. Bituminous insulation will have to be covered with plaster on a mesh or screed. This is a huge plus in the manufacture of pool bowls and not only.
  4. Cement-polymer waterproofing has a unique property: it is vapor-permeable. That is, water will not penetrate into the structure, for example, the basement of a building, while the masonry, if it is moistened, will dry out. The occurrence of delamination is excluded if moisture does not come from the outside, but from the inside of the concrete, it will be gradually removed to the outside. In such cases, moisture tears off the bituminous waterproofing. Due to its high vapor permeability, mineral insulation can be used specifically for internal waterproofing, and often it is the only possible solution for the reconstruction of buildings.
  5. The compositions are chemically neutral, environmentally safe, and are approved for use in drinking water tanks.

Types of cement-polymer waterproofing. According to its properties, we would divide the cement-polymer waterproofing into three groups:

  • Standard mixes for a highly abrasion resistant outer coating. However, it is inelastic and in the event of a crack in the base (concrete), the waterproofing will also be broken. And this, you see, is a significant drawback, since the probability of cracking is almost one hundred percent!
  • Crystallizing mixtures (penetrating insulation) contain salt additives, which, when penetrated into concrete, form waterproof structures. Moreover, over time and as it gets wet, the waterproofing "grows" more and more into the base and becomes more reliable. Such compositions are capable of bridging small cracks (about 0.5 mm) in the base, they perfectly hold negative water retaining, do not let water through wet concrete, which makes them indispensable for the reconstruction (drainage) of underground structures where external waterproofing is absent or broken.
  • Elastic cement-polymer coatings are designed for problem substrates that can crack, and that is the majority of concrete substrates performed today! The brands recommended on the market are reliable, they are guaranteed to close cracks up to 1 mm, withstand vertical water pressure up to 50 m.

Polymer-cement compositionBitumsealFlexfactory productionBitumPetrochemicalIndustriesLtd... bridges cracks larger than 2 mm! Thanks to the finished waterproofing coating introduced into the latex hydraulic additives BitumsealFlexunique elasticity is given.

Waterproofing technology

  • Before starting work, the surfaces must be free of dust, dirt and oils. In the case of a loose loose substrate, the manufacturer Bitum Petrochemical Industries Ltd. recommends pretreating the surface with Aquapoxy 2K Penetrating Primer.
  • The crumbling mortar and concrete are removed from the seams and cracks, cleaned and tightly coined with any non-shrinking cement mortar. Cracks, seams and large shells are embroidered and tightly filled with the same mortar or hydraulic seal.
  • The surface must be moistened immediately before applying waterproofing.
  • In the corners and in the floor-to-wall interface, pre-make fillets with a radius of 3-4 cm. For this, you can use cement plaster. Additionally, reinforce the joints with waterproofing tape, embedding it in the material. Lay an additional layer of Bitumseal Flex on top.
  • Lubricants are applied only with a brush or spatula.
  • When applied manually, the cement mixture is thoroughly rubbed or smeared into the surface, leaving no gaps. Small shells are filled with the mixture.
  • To achieve the desired result, apply two or three layers. When applying the first layer, the movements with the trowel should go in the same direction. Each subsequent layer is applied at intervals of 12-24 hours. The next layer is applied in a direction perpendicular to the previous one. The applied layers of the mixture should be protected from drying out too quickly. To do this, the surface must be wetted every 2-3 hours for 1-2 days.
  • Internal processing of the precast concrete basement walls completed. After two weeks, the surface can be protected with tiles, plaster or screed.

When carrying out internal waterproofing of basement and basement floors, this is generally the only option.

All structural elements of a house or apartment require reliable protection from high humidity. What is waterproofing for?

In a room located above a damp basement, moisture destroys the concrete of the floors. In the wooden covering, mold starts up from high humidity, and rotting begins. In multi-storey buildings on the middle floors, when moisture penetrates through the cracks at the joints of the floor, carpet, laminate, parquet, bamboo lose their original appearance, become unusable.

Waterproofing the first floor of a private house that does not have a basement or floor in the country will extend the life of the building. Water vapor rising from the ground can be acidic or alkaline.

Interacting with concrete, moisture can completely destroy it in a few years -. The device for waterproofing the floor will help not to face such problems in the home, increase the safety of its operation, and increase comfortable living conditions.

Materials (edit)

Depending on the purpose, conditions of use of the premises, the condition of the subfloor, financial costs, various materials are used for waterproofing, which protect it from destruction. All types of waterproofing are in two main groups - for outdoor and indoor use.

By the main composition of the water-repellent component:

  • bituminous - based on mineral components;
  • polymer;
  • bitumen-polymer.

According to the method of application on surfaces, the main types are distinguished:

  • roll;
  • film;
  • penetrating;
  • membrane;
  • painting;
  • lining;
  • coating;
  • powder;
  • plastering.

Roll and self-adhesive waterproofing

Widespread for waterproofing floors in apartments and private houses. Roofing material for waterproofing is used to this day, along with tar and glass roofing material. Cardboard or fiberglass impregnated with a mixture of bitumen, basalt chips. They can be laid to protect foundations, roofs, floors from moisture. Modern waterproofing materials additionally have thermal insulation properties.

Roll waterproofing - membrane (geomembrane). It has a lock at the junction. Bonding is additionally performed.

Rolled waterproofing materials are of two types: floating and self-adhesive. Surfacing materials are durable, inexpensive in price. Their disadvantage: it is necessary to lay waterproofing using a gasoline or gas burner, when heated, they emit an unpleasant odor, harmful smoke. The method is quite suitable for use in the country with your own hands when waterproofing the subfloor. Laying roofing material during waterproofing work requires the installation of an additional screed.

Self-adhesive waterproofing is installed quickly, easily attached to the base. Which side to lay the self-adhesive material is indicated in the attached instructions. Self-adhesive film made of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene is used for waterproofing. Usually pvc film is used to create dry or cement-concrete screed of concrete floor. Working with self-adhesive tape does not take much time.

Penetrating water protection

used as the main or additional measure of protection of the concrete floor. Includes subgroups:

  • Concreting - increases the density, strength of the material. They are laid as an additive to create a reinforcing layer.
  • Cement-polymer - used for processing concrete, wood, brick floors. Polymer waterproofing has high adhesion to the surface, easy to use, environmentally friendly. The waterproofing of the subfloor can be done with cement-polymer mastic, laid on a reinforcing mesh - you get a waterproofing layer and a screed at the same time.
  • Cement inorganic waterproofing is used for concrete floor treatment.

Ceramic tiles can be easily laid on a layer of penetrating waterproofing.

Mastics

plastic adhesive solutions based on bitumen, liquid rubber, polymers, resins, plasticizers, and other additives. Mastic solutions are of the hot or cold type. Mastic for waterproofing the floor is used to create a waterproof layer, to process joints in the bathroom, toilet, kitchen, bathhouse, pool. Mastic displaces roll materials, since, unlike them, it does not have an unpleasant odor, does not form seams that could cause water leakage.

Water repellent materials

For waterproofing, liquid water-repellent materials can be installed. The group includes primers, varnishes, paints, and impregnations.

Powder materials

for protection against moisture are represented by a variety of dry mixtures based on cement, glue, binders, plasticizers.

Immediately before use, a dry mixture is placed in the water so that the solution is ready for use. Powder mixtures are used to create floor concrete screeds, a waterproof layer for the floor of basements, swimming pools. It all depends on the material chosen.

Execution technologies

When applying waterproofing, it is important to follow the rule - in the places where the floor joins the walls, the waterproofing layer must be raised to a height of at least 30 cm.

Application of liquid waterproofing. Liquid waterproofing for the floor, depending on the composition and viscosity of the material, is divided into cast, impregnating.

Polymers and bituminous compounds

Cast - the application of polymer or bitumen solutions, when solidified, an even waterproof film is formed. Bituminous solutions are heated to a temperature of 130 - 140 ° C, poured onto a clean floor and leveled with a wide spatula.

This method is used to process solid foundations before pouring the screed. Laying waterproofing can be done in several layers, between which a metal reinforcing mesh or reinforced fiberglass is laid; the thickness of the waterproof film can be 5 - 15 cm. The base of the floor is impregnated with the waterproofing material.

Surface coating involves working with heated bitumen-polymer mastics, cold polymer, rubber-epoxy mastics. Oxidized bitumen based coating waterproofing is produced with the inclusion of an organic solvent and various fillers.

Rubber crumb, plasticizer, latex are used as additives, which significantly increases the elasticity of the coating and prevents it from cracking. Bitumen-polymer mastics are characterized by high adhesion. Laying waterproofing under a concrete floor with reinforcing fiber significantly increases its strength and abrasion resistance.

A special primer applied before the application of the mastic increases the bond of the waterproofing layer to the concrete base. Mastic can be sold complete with a primer, the main component is common. The main advantages of lubricants are cost-effectiveness and ease of application.

Dyeing

How to waterproof a floor by painting? The painting is used for log floors, for wood or concrete surfaces. A polymer or bitumen varnish is used. Depending on the consistency of the composition, it is applied to the surface with a spatula, roller, paint brush. The layer with such processing is 2 - 3 mm thick and additionally performs the functions of anti-corrosion and antifungal protection. The service life of such protection is 5 years.

Gluing materials

Self-adhesive roll-up waterproofing option

How to properly waterproof the floor with pasting materials? This method involves laying roll and sheet moisture-resistant materials in layers on a previously cleaned and primed base of the floor.

Types of gluing waterproofing:

  • Conventional flooring on a surface under a cement or dry screed, under a wooden sub-surface with a joint or independent fastening method.
  • Fusing roll material onto the floor with a gas burner. The method is fire hazardous, requiring skills and strict adherence to fire safety rules.
  • Bonding with special adhesives and mastics. Many types of modern film waterproofing have an adhesive layer, which greatly simplifies their installation. The melting point of the bitumen-polymer-based mastic is selected 20 - 25 ° higher than the highest air temperature in the given room.

All types of gluing materials react to shear, and therefore they are used to protect rigid structures made of brick, concrete, reinforced concrete from high humidity. This installation of waterproofing is also used for wooden subfloors.

Plaster

A simple in execution, environmentally friendly method using various dry mixes based on cement with the inclusion of binders, mineral and polymer additives. The solution fills well any irregularities, cracks, crevices of the treated surface. The mixture is applied with a spatula or brush.

Mastic and plaster

Floor waterproofing mastic. Features of working with mastic and plaster.

After applying the self-leveling material, the floor must be in a calm state for the compound to polymerize. The mastic is applied in several layers - in this case, each subsequent layer is applied perpendicular to the previous one after it has completely dried.

Full waterproofing is provided when the floor and walls are treated to a height of 10-15 cm. Cement-polymer mastics provide waterproofing, form a self-leveling surface. There is no need to grout the screed. A floor finish is laid on top of the waterproofing.

Backfill materials

Backfill waterproofing is used to protect the floor in wet rooms. How do I lay the backfill material? Bulk components are poured into the previously constructed formwork in an even layer.

Perlite sand, ash, mineral wool, bentonite are used as a filler. The filling water protection has a long service life, but its installation is a laborious and expensive process.

Choice for the room

When choosing a material and a method for waterproofing a floor, it is necessary to take into account the individual characteristics of the operation of the room - humidity, the presence of a "warm floor" heating system, the presence of a toilet, a swimming pool.

Especially carefully it is necessary to carry out work in the country in the garage - a constant excess of moisture will lead to rotting of vehicles. Which waterproofing should you choose to protect your garage floor?

The optimal solution is concrete. Waterproofing under the concrete floor - penetrating, impregnation, additives to concrete when preparing a solution. Immediately before pouring concrete, the soil is poured with bitumen, building clay is also used, or a roll material - a geomembrane.

It is possible to use a combined method of waterproofing - the first layer is laid with a roll coating, then all the joints that appear are sealed and a layer of mastic is applied on top.

Preparation for work

Before starting work on waterproofing, preliminary measures are taken with a rough floor:

  • removal of the old coating;
  • thorough cleaning, drying of the rough surface;
  • sealing cracks and cracked parts of the surface with waterproofing putty.

The main condition for the duration of operation and the effectiveness of preserving the floor from high humidity is the correct choice of material, adherence to the laying technology.

Cement waterproofing protects various structures from moisture. Materials in this group are often used for many benefits. With the correct mixing of the components, high reliability is ensured, and the service life of the coating is increased. There are different types of cement-based mixtures. When choosing, take into account their composition, properties.

Peculiarities

Waterproofing mixtures are used to protect various surfaces from water: floors, walls and ceilings, joints, etc. Cement-based materials have become widespread. This is due to the reasonable price, relatively simple application.

Despite the fact that cement absorbs some moisture, mixtures containing such a component provide high protection against water exposure. At the same time, there are no contradictions in properties, since in the manufacture of waterproofing on a cement basis, special additives are used that greatly improve the characteristics of the material.

For waterproofing surfaces, formulations containing stress cement are used. It is distinguished by increased strength, resistance to cracking. Compared to other brands, such cement absorbs moisture to a minimum. The use of hydrophobic additives, plasticizers increases the resistance to water, enhances reliability by increasing the plasticity of the mixture.

Waterproofing is applied in a layer of substantial thickness, due to which the treated structure is better protected. The principle of application is similar to the method of using plaster mixtures. Thanks to the waterproofing layer, condensation does not form, which gradually destroys the structure and cladding. As a result, the protected surfaces retain their attractiveness longer and serve for a long time.

Advantages and disadvantages

Positive traits:

  • a wide range of applications: protection of foundations, fencing of one-story and multi-storey buildings, waterproofing of pools and tanks in contact with water, preparation for cladding of bathrooms, balconies, application to structures that are exposed to a significant load of water under pressure, during flooding of premises;
  • a high degree of protection against the influence of moisture, cement-based waterproofing can be used in any conditions, even in the most difficult;
  • simple application principle;
  • the possibility of applying to a moistened surface, which is due to the presence of cement in the composition, the adhesion of which only increases if the humidity of the protected surface is first increased;
  • providing protection against corrosion;
  • absence of a chemical reaction upon contact with aggressive media;
  • resistance to low temperatures;
  • vapor permeability;
  • lack of harmful components.

There are few disadvantages of such mixtures. They note the possibility of applying only to structures that have already gained strength. In addition, cement-based waterproofing materials provide a high degree of protection, provided that several layers of material are applied to the enclosed structure.

Varieties in composition

When choosing, take into account the type of components, the structure of the mixture. The material is selected taking into account the intended purpose of the enclosed structure, operating conditions. Waterproofing must correspond to the temperature regime at which it will be applied and served in the future. Violation of this condition will lead to the gradual destruction of the protective layer.

Cement-sand waterproofing

The composition is available in the form of a dry mixture. This is the simplest type of waterproofing in terms of properties, which is due to the use of cement as the main component. The mixture is quite tough; during the drying process, the protective coating should be often moistened - up to 3 times a day for 2 weeks.

For application, it is recommended to use the spray method of the composition using special equipment. The main purpose of the cement-sand mixture is to protect the monolithic foundation of objects. If you plan to apply waterproofing yourself, to increase the density of the composition, you need to introduce special additives. Without them, the life of the waterproofing will be reduced, and the coating will not perform its functions.

The mixture is applied sequentially several times. When the work is over, it is recommended to protect the fenced structure from possible damage during drying.

However, the surface of the waterproofing layer can still deform. In this case, moisture evaporates unevenly, which leads to a change in volume with different intensities.

With the addition of latex

Due to this composition, the plasticity of the material is ensured. Latex increases the resistance of the waterproofing to cracking. The material tolerates the effects of temperature extremes and low values of this parameter much better. As a result, the cement mixture resembles liquid rubber in appearance and properties. After applying the material, an impermeable coating is obtained, which reliably protects the enclosed structure from moisture.

You can add latex to the cement mixture yourself, keeping the proportions. However, it is much easier to use a ready-made mixture.

Mandatory conditions when working with such material:
  • application of the method of gunning or spraying on a surface that has been carefully prepared beforehand;
  • the mixture should be hot.

The result is a seamless coating that does not allow moisture to pass through, does not crack, is resistant to mechanical stress and lasts a long time, and also withstands exposure to high temperatures.

With liquid glass

Such a component is added to the cement mixture, which improves the properties of a hard cement-sand mortar. Most often, the material is used to protect the foundation, basement floors, and to form refractory coatings.

Advantages of formulations based on liquid glass:
  • protection against high temperatures;
  • high adhesion;
  • manifestation of antiseptic properties;
  • lack of toxic components in the composition.
Various uses:
  • liquid glass is applied to seams, joints, cracks, this option is used as an auxiliary measure, after applying this type of waterproofing, roll material is also used;
  • liquid glass is used as the main component of a cement mixture intended for pouring a foundation.

Cement-polymer

The composition includes Portland cement, sand, plasticizers. Cement-polymer waterproofing has improved properties. The main advantage of such a material is considered to be high resistance to tensile and tensile loads. This is due to the formation of molecular bonds with the combination of polymer components and cement. As a result, the enclosed structure tolerates dynamic loads well and is resistant to cracking.

There are different types of polymer-cement mixtures:

  • waterproofing adhesive;
  • waterproofing.

There are one- and two-component formulations. Moreover, the second of the options is more common. It contains acrylic emulsion, microfiber. This material is used when there is a high risk of deformation loads (cracks of more than 1 mm are formed). In other cases, you can use dry one-component mixtures.

Types of compositions by the method of application

Materials differ in structure and method of application. The choice is made taking into account the state of the enclosed structure. Penetrating compositions are preferred for use on surfaces that are porous. Cement waterproofing coating type, plaster and elastic coating mixture are applied to the surface. Certain types of materials are intended only for the repair of objects.

Coating

This is the most common mixture, it is used to protect various surfaces during construction and at the stage of repairs: floors, walls, ceilings, balconies, bathrooms, foundations, water tanks. Lubricating waterproofing allows you to create an impermeable layer on the protected surface that thoroughly protects against water.

Operated for a long period, fills the smallest cracks. Such a composition can be applied to surfaces made of different materials: drywall, metal, brick, wood, concrete, etc.

Elastic coating

This group includes materials containing plasticizers. These are auxiliary components that are used to increase the elasticity of the cement composition. This type of mixture is recommended to be used to protect surfaces of complex configuration, prone to the formation of small cobweb-like cracks up to 0.5 mm wide.

The advantages of elastic waterproofing include increased strength. It is permissible to apply it on the surface: pool, terrace, balcony, water tank. It differs from the classical coating type waterproofing by its high price.

Plastering

This version of the material is prone to cracking, therefore it is not recommended to use it with increased dynamic loads. The surface of the enclosed structure should not deform, then a significant duration of the waterproofing service is ensured. To improve the properties, it is allowed to add auxiliary components, for example, water glass. This type of material has the advantage of being able to flatten curved surfaces and at the same time provide protection from moisture.

Penetrating

Waterproofing of this type can only be used to protect concrete and reinforced concrete structures. This is due to the fact that the composition provides efficiency provided that the protected surface is porous. Waterproofing penetrates the structure of concrete, when it comes into contact with moisture contained in such material, it crystallizes, clogging the pores.

This prevents the risk of moisture penetration. Such a composition is used when it is not possible to protect the external surfaces of the structure with the help of external waterproofing.

Repair compositions

They are characterized by a high drying speed. This type of material is recommended for filling joints and cracks. It can be used on different surfaces, including when restoring the foundation. The advantages of this mixture include the absence of drying shrinkage.

Water plug

The material is used when it is necessary to quickly restore the integrity of concrete pressure head structures. It is used to repair objects made of stone, concrete, reinforced concrete. Produced in dry form. Upon contact with water, when the mixture clogs the deformed area in the thickness of the concrete or stone structure, the cement composition instantly hardens, forming an impenetrable barrier for water. The advantage of the water plug is high adhesion to the enclosed surface. It is used even if there is a leak.

Application technology

Instructions:

  1. If the base is old, it is repaired: the top layer is removed, cleaned, leveled using special mixtures.
  2. Before using cement compositions, the surface is moistened.
  3. When the excess moisture evaporates, and the enclosed structure is poorly moistened, waterproofing is applied.
  4. In the work, a spatula or special equipment for spraying the mixture is used.
  5. The material is applied several times. After the formation of the first layer, you need to wait 2-3 days, during this period the surface is moistened.
  6. For 3 days, until the first layer has dried, the next one is applied, and then another one. The cement-based waterproofing should not be allowed to cover the dry surface.

Manufacturers

To purchase quality certified material, consider the products of common brands. It should be borne in mind that prices differ in Moscow and the regions.

Ceresit CR 65

It is a rigid cement waterproofing. Application area:

  • internal and external surfaces;
  • structures buried in the soil;
  • bathtub pool and other reservoirs;
  • protection of walls, floors and ceilings in rooms with high humidity;
  • waterproofing of hydraulic engineering and treatment facilities;
  • protection of various objects from destruction and exposure to low temperatures.

On deformable objects, an elasticizer is added before using the mixture.

Bergauf Hydrostop

Waterproofing belongs to the group of materials of the coating type. It is a one-component mixture, applied with a thickness of 1-5 mm. It gains strength after 28 days and is resistant to bending and compression loads. The composition can be used in conditions of high and low temperatures: -50 ... + 70 ° С.

Cement NC

Stress cement belongs to a separate group of materials, since it has a high linear expansion rate, does not shrink, does not deform. This is the most durable substance, and it also wins in comparison with Portland cement in terms of moisture resistance. The material contains almost no pores, therefore it protects well from moisture.

In the recent past, bituminous materials were used to protect building structures from moisture. They did not provide sufficient reliability, and their service life was limited. Now there is a more effective alternative - elastic polymer waterproofing. Let's talk about its properties and application features.

What is polymer waterproofing?

A wide range of materials with various component composition, physical and chemical properties fall into the category of polymer waterproofing. But they all contain high molecular weight compounds - polymers that give them special characteristics. The method of application is also common: most of these compositions are intended for coating insulation. The most common polymer materials based on bitumen and cement.

Advantages of polymer waterproofing

There are many polymer-based formulations, and they all have different positive qualities. But in general, the following advantages of using this type of insulation can be distinguished.

  • High degree of moisture protection. For example, in the case of cement mixtures, the addition of polymer components helps to solve the problem of pores through which moisture can seep. Polymer waterproofing forms a continuous waterproof layer, while the base retains its air permeability.
  • Good adhesion to the treated surface. For each type of building materials, you can find the appropriate composition. For example, waterproofing of brickwork is best done using polymer-cement mixtures, and bitumen-polymer mastics are also suitable for concrete. Unlike roll-to-roll coatings, the water-repellent layer obtained with these materials is inseparable from the surface.
  • Resistance to any weather factors (temperature extremes, ultraviolet light, precipitation), water pressure, and aggressive chemicals. This allows the use of polymer insulation for both indoor and outdoor work, including for the protection of buried structures.
  • Elasticity. For some types of materials, it reaches 400%. Due to this, polymer-based waterproofing is strong in tension and bending, it can withstand deformation loads well (including during ground movements, thermal expansion of structures).
  • Polymer waterproofing fits well on any surface
  • Flexibility. Elastic coating compounds can be applied to surfaces with any relief, they are easy to use in hard-to-reach places.
  • The fluidity inherent in many types of polymer waterproofing. The composition, which is almost equal in viscosity to water, fills even invisible pores and microcracks. This ensures absolute water resistance.
  • Long period of operation. While conventional bituminous coatings age, dry out and crack over time, polymer-based materials serve on average from 25 years.
  • Wear resistance. Even with prolonged use, the waterproof membrane does not lose its qualities, does not wear out or become thinner.
  • Profitability. The material is applied in a thin layer and does not require high consumption.
  • Safety, no toxic components in the composition.

What are the types of polymer waterproofing?

Materials are classified according to various criteria: composition, purpose, method of application. Below we will consider the main types of elastic polymer waterproofing.

Polymer-based insulation can have different consistencies.

In the form of a solution consistency

Polymer-based elastic lubricating compounds are a ready-to-use mixture or require dilution (with water or a special liquid). The result is a solution of varying degrees of viscosity - from liquid to pasty.

For appointments

Polymer waterproofing is characterized by a wide range of applications, due to the variety of materials and their universal characteristics. Manufacturers strive to expand their product lines by producing mixtures for various purposes. Some of them are used for roofing work, others are used to protect the foundation from groundwater, others are used for floors, etc. Also, depending on the purpose, mastics and sealants are distinguished. The first ones are intended for large-scale works, the second ones - for sealing cracks, seams and other areas of local breakdown of the hydro-barrier.

In the form of a component composition

In terms of composition, polymer waterproofing is represented by two large groups - materials based on bitumen and cement. The most commonly used additives are polyurethane, acrylic, epoxy resins, rubber, and mineral components. With their help, the mixtures are given the necessary properties: plasticity, fluidity, frost resistance, the ability to quickly harden, etc.

In the form of application methods

The installation technology for flexible polymer waterproofing depends on the consistency of the mortar. Viscous compounds are applied with a spatula, semi-liquid and liquid - with a brush or roller, as well as by spraying. Depending on the scale of the work, the experience of the master and the availability of professional equipment, a manual or mechanized method is used.

It is also important to take into account the peculiarities of the preparation of the mixture. One-component polymer insulation is ready to use, two-component compounds are mixed in the proportion recommended by the manufacturer. Polymer cement mixtures are supplied in the form of a powder, which must be diluted with water.

Where is polymer waterproofing applied?

Resilient polymer insulation is often used to protect roofs.

Polymer-based waterproofing is used almost everywhere in cases where it is necessary to protect structures from the destructive effects of moisture. The main field of application of the materials is construction. They serve to protect ground and underground parts of buildings:

  • roofs;
  • walls (inside and outside);
  • foundations;
  • basements and basements;
  • rooms with a high level of humidity (bathrooms, toilets);
  • balconies and loggias.

Also, with the help of elastic polymer waterproofing, garages, parking lots, swimming pools, reservoirs, bridges, roads, and hydraulic structures are protected.

Existing methods of application

When choosing a method of application, first of all, the scope of work is taken into account. In private construction and renovation, they usually deal with small areas. For the installation of polymer insulation, in this case, the simplest tools are required - a paint brush or a roller. The viscous composition is applied with a construction trowel. These works can be performed independently, without the involvement of professional labor.

Liquid insulation is applied by spraying.

In industrial construction, as a rule, a mechanized installation method is used. Liquid mixtures are sprayed by airless method using a pumping unit.

Polymer waterproofing technology

Elastic polymer waterproofing is generally easy to use, but technology must be strictly followed to obtain a high-quality result. The process can be divided into several stages.

  • Selection of material. In this case, one should take into account the properties of the surface to be treated, the technical condition of structures, operating conditions, and environmental factors. Often, professional advice is needed for a competent selection.
  • Calculation of the required amount of the mixture based on the data on the consumption and the insulated area.
  • Surface preparation.
  • Preparation of a solution, if necessary by technology.
  • Application of the composition.

When working with some materials, you need to wait for a time during which the waterproofing will fully manifest its properties.

Material selection

When choosing a material, one should focus not only on its characteristics, but also on the manufacturer. Here, the criterion of value for money is important. If the budget is not limited, it is recommended to pay attention to the products of well-known brands that have long established themselves on the Russian market. Bituminous-polymer mastics are produced under the brands TechnoNikol, Bitumast, Ecomast. Among the cement mixtures, products of the brands Ceresit, Osnovit, Lakhta, Mapei are known. Among epoxy-based materials, it is worth mentioning Masterseal from BASF and the more affordable domestic brand Blockade.

Calculate the used solution consumption

The polymer insulation is applied in a thin layer.

The calculation of the material depends on its consistency. Polymer-based liquid waterproofing is applied in a thin layer, therefore, less solution is required to achieve the desired result. The exact data are indicated by the manufacturer on the packaging, but the average consumption is 1 kg per 1 m2 of surface. This assumes that the material is applied in one layer with a thickness of no more than 2 mm.

Preparatory work

Before applying elastic polymer waterproofing, you need to carefully prepare the base: the quality of adhesion of the material to the surface depends on this. The work is carried out in stages:

  • the base is cleaned of debris and dust;
  • remove irregularities, protrusions, concrete flows, smooth out sharp corners;
  • if necessary, the surface is leveled with cement mortar;
  • remove dust again;
  • apply a primer or primer.

Spraying waterproofing

An airless spraying unit is used to apply insulation.

The flexible polymer waterproofing is applied using an airless spray unit. Contact with air is unacceptable, as this hardens the mixture prematurely. While it is possible to rent a pump, the spraying job is best left to someone who knows how to handle it. Moreover, some materials are demanding in the choice of equipment, and not every installation is suitable for their application.

Before spraying polymer waterproofing, weak surface areas are reinforced. These are, first of all, corners, joints and places of abutment of structures. Geotextiles are used for reinforcement.

The two-component polymeric waterproofing is mixed during application. The containers with the compositions are connected to the pumping unit. When spraying, make sure that the contents of both tanks are consumed evenly.

Polymer base used in coating waterproofing

Viscous polymeric materials are not suitable for spraying; they are applied in a different way. Such elastic waterproofing is called coating. Its installation is carried out manually, without the use of special equipment.

In the case of using dry cement powder, the mortar is prepared immediately before application in an amount not greater than it is possible to use it up in one hour.

Output

Polymer waterproofing is an effective and durable protection of any surfaces from moisture. Depending on the properties of the base, materials based on cement or bitumen are chosen. Before using the composition, carefully read the instructions.

The use of high-quality waterproofing materials, selected in accordance with the operating conditions, allows you to increase the reliability and reduce the cost of maintenance and repair of buildings, highways, engineering infrastructure and utilities. Therefore, the polymer waterproofing, which is sold by the company "MPKM", is in demand and is widely used in the construction industry.

Elastic polymer waterproofing, depending on the range of tasks to be solved, can be used as an independent waterproofing material or as an additional tool that increases the reliability of other methods of ensuring the waterproofing of concrete. Various grades and compositions on a polyurethane base can protect building structures not only from water, but also from chemically active and aggressive substances, the effect of which causes the destruction of reinforced concrete structures.

Advantages of polymer waterproofing

The effectiveness of waterproofing materials containing epoxy resins and polymer additives is due to the chemical resistance, durability and elasticity of the film that forms when protective compounds are applied to substrates.

  • Elasticity makes it possible to partially compensate for the deformation of the base, therefore, the polymer film of the waterproofing always remains intact and tight.
  • Polymer-based materials have good adhesion to concrete, brick, cement plaster, tiles, metal and other materials. They can be applied on absorbent and non-absorbent substrates. The waterproofing layer can be used as a base for sprayed concrete or finishing materials.
  • Polymer waterproofing of concrete allows you to process surfaces of complex shapes. The coverings precisely follow the contours of the base and do not have seams that reduce the effectiveness of protection.

Polyurethane-based materials are highly technological. They are quickly applied to previously prepared substrates: liquid polymer waterproofing using spray guns or special equipment for spraying two-component compounds, and pasty mixtures with ordinary brushes, brushes and rollers.
