Do-it-yourself installation of a fence from a chain-link. A fence made of a chain-link mesh without welding: detailed step-by-step instructions for craftsmen and photo examples of finished works. Types of mesh fences

A simple and inexpensive way to mark the boundaries of ownership of the territory is to install a chain-link fence. Of course, today there are many alternative materials that have a more presentable look, for example,. But they are more expensive and time-consuming to install, more suitable for the capital external fencing of a country house.

And if you need to fence off a building plot, a summer cottage, separate the utility area from the residential area, or make an enclosure for animals?

Is it reasonable to spend a lot of money and a lot of time, to attract specialists, if you can make a fence from a chain-link mesh with your own hands in one day, and the result will be achieved? The manufacturing technology, calculation and installation are described below in the form of step-by-step instructions.

Advantages of a chain-link fence

  • saving financial resources. The price of a chain-link fence is practically the lowest of all possible fence options. Competition in price can be made only by a wattle fence of branches, but otherwise it will lose;
  • light weight. There is no need for a massive frame or foundation pouring;
  • strength and resistance to environmental factors: moisture, temperature extremes, ultraviolet light, fire, mechanical damage;
  • light transmission. A fence made of a chain-link mesh does not create obstacles to the penetration of sunlight, which means that there will be no shaded areas on the site and the plants will feel comfortable in any part of it;
  • undemanding care and no need for repair;
  • the ability to withstand significant stress. For example, a wooden fence is easier to break through than to break a metal net;
  • availability. You can buy a netting netting at any hardware store or in the market;
  • a large assortment, allows you to choose the one that is best suited for specific needs;
  • high speed of installation. You can install a chain-link fence together in one day.

Of course, the mesh fence is not without its drawbacks, including: unattractive appearance, "transparency" of the fence and the need for painting. Some of the shortcomings are easily leveled if you know how to choose the right mesh netting.

Types of mesh fence chain-link - which is better

When choosing which mesh netting to use for fencing, you need to take into account its main parameters:

1. Manufacturing material:

  • low-carbon steel (the mesh is more plastic);
  • stainless steel (rigid mesh).

2. Outer cover:

  • non-galvanized chain-link. Wire thickness - 1.2-5 mm, mesh size 50-100 mm. This mesh is prone to rust and needs painting;
  • galvanized chain-link. Wire thickness - 1.6-5 mm, mesh size 50-100 mm. Does not need protection, has a long service life;
  • plasticized (metal with polymer coating). Wire thickness - 2.5-2.8 mm, mesh size 25-50 mm. More presentable, with a high-quality coating, it has a long service life.

Advice. Ask the seller for a certificate that confirms the quality of the coating. A simple PVC coating without additives guaranteeing its resistance to UV and frost will soon deteriorate.

3. Dimensions of the chain-link cell

The smaller the cells, the smaller the living creatures will crawl through the mesh. This is important when building a fence, for example, for chickens or ducklings. But, such a mesh will be heavier, it will take more metal to make it, which means it will be more expensive. For a fence, the best option is a grid with a cell of 50x50.

After the mesh is selected, it's time to move on to the main work, namely, to create a sketch of the fence, calculate the materials and install the fence (tension and sectional).

How to make a fence from a chain-link mesh with your own hands

Stage 1. Drawing of a fence from a chain-link mesh

A drawing or sketch is a working graphic document that contains the following data:

  • the place of installation of the fence, taking into account access roads, trees, houses, other buildings on the site, etc.;
  • relief features. If the site has a slope or elevation differences, the diagram will help determine what is more appropriate: to level the soil or make a cascade fence;
  • fence length. Since the width is determined by the width of the mesh, there is no need to take into account the length;
  • the place of installation of support pillars and props.

Types of chain-link fences by frame type

When designing a fence, a decision is also made as to which frame for the fence from the chain-link mesh will be used. Due to the fact that there are three ways of attaching the mesh, there are three types of frame.

  • stretch fence- easy to assemble. The price of a tension fence made of a chain-link mesh is minimal. In order to build it, you need to install supports and stretch the mesh. The design flaw is that the mesh will sag over time;

  • pull fence... The broach in the form of a strong wire serves as a support that supports the mesh, not allowing it to sag;

  • sectional fence... Requires more costs for the purchase of a frame corner and longer time for the manufacture of sections. Although you can buy ready-made sections on the market. Naturally, the price of a sectional mesh fence is the highest, but the design is more reliable and practical.

Note. With uneven terrain on the site, it is better to give preference to a fence made of sections, this will allow you to put a fence from a chain-link mesh, taking into account height differences, without leveling the ground plane.

The correct drawing of a fence from a chain-link mesh contains a description of the fence with key dimensions and main nodes, incl. arrangement of corners.

Stage 2. Material for building a fence: selection and calculation

Installing a fence from a chain-link mesh will take only one or two days, if all the materials and tools necessary for the work are prepared in advance.

Construction Materials:

  1. Rabitz. The requirements for it are described above.
  2. Tension wire (when installing a tension fence). The function is to support the mesh, provide additional attachment points and eliminate the possibility of sagging. For the fence, galvanized wire with a thickness of 2 mm or more is suitable. (from 130 rubles / l.m.).

    As a more durable alternative to wire, reinforcement is used, which is welded between the posts or a thin pipe. These materials exclude theft of the mesh.

  3. Support posts for a fence from a chain-link mesh.
  4. Profile corners (for the manufacture of a sectional fence). Using the corners, a frame of individual sections is formed, which are installed on the support pillars. The average price of a corner 40x40x3 is 97 rubles / r.m.
  5. Thin wire or other fasteners for attaching the mesh.
  6. Cement and sand (for concreting support pillars).
  7. Protective compounds for wood or metal processing.

From the tool you will need: a tape measure, a rope for marking the site, a shovel or a drill.

What pillars can be used for a fence from a chain-link

Metal pillars

A hollow profile with a round or square cross section is used. The versatility of the metal pole is beyond question. The iron support does not need processing during installation (only priming and painting), any kind of fasteners are welded to the metal.
For a fence from a chain-link mesh, a round post with a diameter of 60 mm is suitable. (the average price with a metal thickness of 2 mm is 159 rubles / r.m.) or rectangular, with a section of 40x60 (the price with a wall thickness of 2 mm is 163 rubles / r.m.).

Wooden pillars

Despite the fact that this is the simplest solution, wooden supports have such a disadvantage as susceptibility to weathering and the activity of microorganisms. In addition, dense wood (oak, elm) is not cheap. You can use more popular species - pine, birch. With proper processing and constant care, they will last 20-25 years. However, in practice, wooden mesh fence posts are used for temporary structures. A pillar with a size of 100x100 mm (70 rubles / l.m.) is suitable for a fence.

Brick pillars

Strong and massive supports are too expensive a solution for a mesh fence, therefore, they are not used in practice. In addition, it is necessary to fill the foundation under them.

Material prepared for the site www.site

Concrete pillars

Relatively inexpensive material. You can do it yourself or buy ready-made ones (the approximate price for one support 80x80x2000 is 350 rubles / piece). It is relevant if the store is in the immediate vicinity of the installation site, otherwise the cost of transport will significantly increase the cost of the fence from the netting. At the same time, fastening the mesh to a concrete pillar has its own specifics.

Asbestos cement pipes

They are characterized by relative cheapness (the price of a pipe is 100x3000 - 300 rubles), strength and resistance to decay. But stretching the mesh is inconvenient and requires the use of clamps or clamps. In addition, the pipes are hollow, they just need to be closed with plugs, otherwise the frozen water will simply burst the pipe from the inside.

Stage 3. Calculation of a fence from a chain-link mesh

  1. Number of m.p. (running meters) of the mesh depends on the size of the site. Usually a chain-link is sold in rolls of 10 m. The price of a galvanized mesh of a chain-link 50x50x2 mm - from 54 rubles / sq. M. The price of a non-stabilized mesh netting 50x50x2 mm - from 48 rubles / sq. The price of a polymer mesh 50x50x2.2 mm - from 221 rubles / sq.
  2. The length of the tension wire is equal to two lengths of the fence (or three if the wire is installed in the middle). With a fence height of 1500 mm, 2-3 lengths are sufficient.
  3. The number of posts depends on the perimeter of the site (total length of the fence) and is calculated based on the fact that the maximum distance between adjacent posts is 2,500 mm. This rule is the same for a stretch fence and a sectional fence.
  4. The length of the profile corner is equal to the frame perimeter multiplied by the number of sections.
  5. Fastening wire or other fasteners, depending on the method of fastening.

Stage 4. Do-it-yourself fence installation from a chain-link mesh

The sequence of work.

1. Preparation of the soil surface

The installation site of the fence does not need serious cleaning. It is enough to remove the debris and remove the disturbing plants and shrubs. In this case, plants that will grow near the grid (and not near the support pillar) can be left if their development does not lead to deformation of the grid.

2. Filling the foundation for the fence from the mesh netting

Do you need a foundation for a chain-link fence? There are fences installed on the foundation. The pouring of the concrete base can only be explained by the installation of a mesh using heavy metal sections. Which in most cases is unjustified.

3. Installation of poles for a fence from a chain-link

Preparatory processing of fence posts

  • Processing of wooden posts- the timber should be treated with an antiseptic (a solution that prevents wood decay) at the level of deepening into the soil. The SENEZH product line has proven itself well (price from 90 rubles / l).
  • Processing of metal posts- iron supports must be cleaned of rust and coated with a corrosion inhibitor (to prevent the development of rust). The products of the Konferum company are in demand, which supplies several types of primers.

To what depth should the fence posts be buried from the chain-link?

Despite the minimum windage of the mesh, the chain-link is heavy, with a length of 2.5 meters (between the supports) and a height of 1.5 m, the fence can tilt or fall. Therefore, the support pillars are installed to a depth of 1 meter, under certain conditions (fence height, type of soil on the site), the minimum pit depth is 50-80 cm.

Methods for installing poles under the fence

Installation on solid ground (clay)

Installation is possible in two ways:

  • First, by driving or screwing in the supports to the desired depth. This method has a significant drawback, which manifests itself in the fact that it is difficult to maintain the level of the installation during clogging and it is easy to deform the top of the clogged pipe. Therefore, it must be covered with plywood to avoid deformation.
  • Secondly, by drilling / digging a hole for it, followed by pouring concrete. In this case, the depth of installation of the support is chosen taking into account the level of soil freezing. However, some masters argue that this is not necessary.

Installation on loose and heaving soils

The technology is more laborious, here the masters also distinguish two installation options:

  • First, install the support 20 cm below the level of soil freezing. Then the swelling of the soil will not squeeze out the pipe.
  • Secondly, replace the soil around the support. To do this, you need to make a hole with a larger diameter (twice the diameter of the pipe) and replace the soil in this place with crushed stone, at a height of 40 cm to the ground surface, the column is concreted. This method creates drainage, which takes on the swelling of the soil and levels it. In this case, the post will definitely not lead.

Advice. Manual drilling, especially with a large number of pole holes, is a very laborious task. It is better to find / rent / buy a motor-drill, with the help of which pilot holes are made of 50-60 cm, the remaining 40-50 cm of the pipe (pillar) are hammered with a sledgehammer.

How to install fence posts from a chain-link

The installation of posts for a fence made of a mesh netting does not differ from the arrangement of other types of fences. Installation order:

  • first, the corner posts are installed. When pulled, they are subjected to the greatest load, therefore it is advisable to reinforce with spacers (oblique supports). The purpose of the spacers is to anticipate the tilt of the support. Alternatively, you can put more powerful pillars (thick-walled) in the corners;
  • pillars are installed in the place where the fence breaks (at the corners of the fence, at bends);
  • a rope is pulled between the already installed posts, along which the supports for the gates and wickets are mounted first of all;
  • the entrance group is equipped (,). Please note that the entrance group of the fence from the mesh is always made in the form of a section, reinforced with additional jumpers;
  • after that, ordinary pillars are installed. It is advisable to make the distance between them the same. This rule is mandatory when installing a sectional fence.

Note. Hollow metal pipes are closed with plugs to prevent water ingress and rust.

4. Guide wire for tensioning the netting of the chain-link

The task of the wire (cable) is to ensure a strong tension of the mesh between the posts. The necessary tension is provided by the following methods of fastening the chain-link:

  • tensioner;
  • lanyard;
  • long thread hook;
  • staples, clamps, spacers and clamps only keep the wire from sagging on the intermediate posts. They are not used as tensioners.

The order of stretching the chain-link: one end of the net is tied to the corner support post, and the other is stretched. If the fence is too long, intermediate fasteners are installed. Their function is to support the wire.

Note. Some users advise passing the guide wire through the mesh. But this option is only suitable when installing a small fence, because stretching the wire along the entire length, and then installing the mesh on the supports is a difficult and meaningless task.

5. Fastening the netting of the chain-link to the posts

  • install on a stretched tension wire;
  • fix to fittings;
  • install in the section and secure in separate sections.

How to pull the mesh between the pillars of the supports when building a tension fence

The netting roll of the chain-link is installed vertically near the corner post (fastening to metal posts is performed). In this case, the folded edges of the mesh should be oriented upward. This reduces the risk of injury from sharp wire ends.

Advice. If a non-galvanized mesh netting is installed, then the masters recommend raising it above the ground level by 100-150 mm.

The mesh is fixed in several places on the support. Then, gradually unwinding, the mesh is pulled and at the same time attached to the upper horizontal link (wire or reinforcement).

When the first roll is finished, the net is pulled over the lower web. It is important to unravel all the tangled spirals of the grid.

After that, the second roll is screwed to the first roll (between themselves), and the second roll is unwound with tension.

Note. If the work is carried out with an assistant, then the connection (bunch of rolls) can be performed with a canopy. If on your own, then you need to connect the pieces when the mesh is not fully stretched, and its edge can be stretched along the length on the ground. Sometimes tying is done by using a wooden lintel to which the edges of both rolls are attached.

After installing the netting of the chain-link along the entire length of the fence, the net is fixed on the middle lintel.

When pulling on the wire, special attention should be paid to the corners. Here you need to be extremely careful to avoid skewing the mesh fabric.

How to stretch the mesh between the pillars of the supports when building a sectional fence

First, let's look at how to make sections for a fence from a chain-link mesh

  • you need to make a frame from a metal corner. Frame parameters: length is equal to the length of the support pipe minus 100-150 mm; width is equal to the distance between adjacent supports;
  • the corner is dissolved into blanks with the help of a grinder;
  • the workpieces are welded into the frame;
  • then we work with the mesh. The desired size is unwound from the roll of the chain-link and is separated by unscrewing the wire;
  • a reinforcing bar is inserted in all four sides of the mesh. The rod allows you to pull the mesh to the edge of the corner;
  • the rod is welded to the edges of the frame inside the corner. Thus, the chain-link is fastened to the corner.

There is another option, which involves welding metal pins (hooks) with a thickness of 3 mm on the inside of the corner. Then the pins are bent inward with pliers, and the mesh is pulled over them. After the entire mesh is stretched, you need to weld the edges of the hooks to make a loop. This eliminates the possibility of the mesh slipping.

After the frame is ready, we proceed to install it. To fasten a separate section to a profile pipe, you need to weld a metal plate onto the support and weld the section to it.

It should be noted that it is very difficult for a beginner without experience to make sections for a fence from a chain-link mesh. The difficulties are related to the fact that:

  • it is problematic to make sections of the same size;
  • it is difficult to install a section of the mesh tightly, without sagging;
  • the need to perform welding work;
  • the complexity of the installation of sections of the fence.

Decorative decoration of a fence made of a chain-link mesh

The mesh fence does not differ in bright design and attractiveness, but if desired, it will result in a nice and durable fence for the site.

Ideas for decorating a mesh fence

  • openwork weaving. It is carried out with a thin wire on a mesh with large meshes. A simple pattern can be made with your own hands;

  • decorative gardening. Planting climbing or climbing plants along a mesh fence will create a hedge around the site. Alternatively, you can attach hanging flower pots, as in the photo on the right;

  • in order not to wait for the greenery to grow and braid the hedge, the net can be decorated with decorative wire flowers;

  • creative design. With a little imagination, you can create original and funny decorations for the fence from the chain-link mesh.

The cost of a fence from a chain-link mesh

The total costs of building a fence from a chain-link mesh are determined taking into account the materials used and their quantity. For example, the cost of the material was indicated as it was discussed. The cost per meter is easy to calculate, knowing the consumption of each material and the length of the fence.

The price of a fence from a chain-link mesh for work with the installation is 1 lm. given in the table

Thus, a chain-link fence is an economically profitable and pre-fabricated type of fence that can be made by hand.

Mesh is widely used for fencing summer cottages. Anyone can install a fence from a chain-link mesh, having a minimum of tools at hand. Subject to the installation technology and the choice of quality materials, such a fence will last 15-20 years. Before starting work, you need to study the types and characteristics of the mesh, as well as study the instructions in detail to avoid mistakes.

The mesh is made of black and galvanized wire, so the quality of the chain-link is different. Black wire mesh is the cheapest and most short-lived. It becomes covered with rust after the first fog or rain, and after 3-4 years it becomes completely unusable. You can extend the service life of a non-galvanized chain-link using paint or liquid rubber, which should be applied to the mesh before installing it, and then periodically renew the protective layer.

The galvanized wire mesh is not afraid of corrosion, and therefore lasts longer. It costs a little more than black, but it does not need a protective treatment at all. from a galvanized chain-link they look neat and attractive.

The plasticized chain-link is becoming more and more popular. This metal mesh is covered with a dense layer of anti-corrosive polymer, due to which it has increased resistance to weathering. In addition, the polymer is colored, the mesh looks very attractive and aesthetically pleasing. And although such a chain-link is quite expensive, the demand for it is constantly growing.

In addition to quality, the netting is distinguished by the size of the cells, the thickness of the wire and the height of the roll. Cells can have dimensions from 10 to 65 mm, wire diameter 1-5 mm. The roll height is from 0.8 to 2 m, but the most popular is 1.5 m. The standard length of the mesh in a roll is 10 m, rolls of 20 m are made to order. The smaller the mesh, the more expensive the mesh cost, because this increases the material consumption ...

Types of mesh fences

Fencing made of chain-link mesh can be sectional and tensioned. The first option provides for the manufacture of rectangular metal sections, inside which the mesh is fixed. For sections, metal corners, profile and round pipes of small diameter are used. Connect them by welding or bolting if not. Such a fence looks more aesthetically pleasing and attractive, the metal frame does not allow the mesh to sag.

Installing a stretch fence is faster and easier; its structure consists only of support pillars and the net itself. The mesh is fastened with steel wire, clamps or hung on hooks welded to the posts. Pipes of different diameters, concrete posts, wooden beams are suitable for pillars.

Installation of fence posts

For both sectional and tension fence, marking, preparation and installation of pillars is carried out using the same technology, but only in the first case, the pillars must be stronger. This is due to the additional load from the metal sections; if the supports are too thin, the fence is bound to skew.

For work you will need:

  • roulette;
  • wooden pegs;
  • a coil of thin rope;
  • building level;
  • hand drill;
  • crushed stone and sand;
  • solution;
  • profile pipes 60x40 mm;
  • Bulgarian;
  • primer.

Step 1. Installing corner posts

The allotted area is cleared of vegetation, if necessary, leveled, the location of the extreme pillars is determined. Experienced builders recommend making corner posts from pipes of a larger section than intermediate ones, and digging them in deeper. For example, if a 40x40 mm profile pipe is taken for intermediate supports, then for corner supports it is better to take 60x40 mm and 15-20 cm longer.

Proceeding to the installation of pillars:

When the solution hardens a little, you can remove the spacers and start marking under the intermediate posts.

Step 2. Markup

A rope is pulled tightly between the corner supports at a height of 15 cm from the ground - this will be the fence line. The line must be divided into equal segments corresponding to the width of the span. The optimal span width for a chain-link fence is 2-2.5 m; if you increase it, the mesh will sag. They retreat from the extreme pillar to the desired distance and drive a peg into the ground, and so on to the opposite corner. All pegs should be in contact with the taut rope and be equidistant from each other.

Video - A new way to install support pillars

Step 3. Installation of intermediate supports

In place of the pegs, holes are drilled for the posts and the bottom is covered with sand. To make it more convenient to control the height of the supports, another rope is pulled along the upper edge of the corner posts. Now pipes are inserted into the pits, leveled in height and vertical, sprinkled with crushed stone and soil and tamped tightly with crowbar. Concrete is poured on top and the surface is leveled.

If it is planned to install a tension fence, and the soil on the site is dense enough, the intermediate supports can simply be driven into the ground and not concreted. For this, holes are drilled half the required depth, pipes are inserted there and hammered with a sledgehammer. To protect the upper edge of the posts from deformation, take a piece of a larger pipe, weld on a steel plate on one side and put it on top of the post. After driving the supports, the pits are covered with crushed stone and sand, spilled with water for better compaction and thoroughly rammed.

Step 4. Welding hooks

After about a week, when the concrete has hardened enough, you can continue with the installation. You can fasten the net to the posts with wire or clamps, but it is more convenient to attach it to hooks. There are profile pipes with hooks already welded on sale, but if you have a welding machine, it is cheaper to make them yourself. For this, pieces of steel rod, screws, nails, even thick wire are suitable - everything that can be welded to the pipe and bent. On a post 2 m high, it is enough to make 3 hooks: at a distance of 15 cm from the ground, 10 cm from the top of the pipe and in the middle.

Video - Do-it-yourself fence from a chain-link

Step 1. Attaching the mesh

A roll of chain-link is placed near the corner post, unwound a little and put the cells on the hooks. To securely fix the edge of the mesh, you need to take a piece of reinforcement with a cross section of 8 mm and a length of 1.5 m and thread it into the cells of the first row. After that, the fittings are attached to the pipe and welded. Now, when pulling the roll, the net will not bend. Having secured the end of the net, the roll is transferred to the next support, carefully unwinding it.

Having departed from the junction of the chain-link with the pipe 10-15 cm, a steel bar is again threaded into the cells. This time, you don't need to weld it on, it just helps to pull the mesh evenly. When the mesh is put on the hooks, the rod is removed, the roll is unwound for one more span, reinforcement is threaded again and so on until the very end of the fence. To connect two canvases, wire from the extreme vertical row of one of the rolls is used.

Step 2. Fixing the web from sagging

Even a well-stretched canvas sags a little over time, therefore, at the installation stage, you need to take care of additional fixing of the chain-link between the posts. You will need a wire with a cross section of 6 mm and a welding machine. The wire is threaded into the second or third row of cells horizontally along the entire fence. In the places where the mesh adheres to the posts, the wire is welded. Then, in the same way, the lower edge of the net is strengthened, and at the end, the hooks are folded. Now the fence is securely fixed on the supports and will not bend and sag.

Step 3. The final stage

When the fence is installed, you need to complete the finishing touches:

  • put plastic plugs on top of the pipes;
  • paint the posts;
  • twist the upper antennae of the chain-link in pairs by 2 turns and bend down.

At this, the installation of the tension fence is considered complete.

Making sections

Step 2. Prepare the racks

Rectangular plates 20x5 cm and 4-5 mm thick are cut from sheet steel. Take one plate, apply it perpendicular to the post at a height of 20 cm from the ground and weld it. The second plate is welded at the top, stepping back from the edge 15-20 cm. The plates are fixed on the remaining supports in the same way.

Step 3. Installation of sections

The first section is placed between the posts, lifted and set in level. Then the sides are welded to the plates and move on to the next span. It is very important to correctly align the sections in height so that the upper crossbars of the frame form a single line. After installing all the sections, the welding points are cleaned, the fence frame is primed and painted.

Video - How to make a fence from a chain-link mesh

A chain-link is a good option for arranging a fence, and in a short time and without using any special tools. The end result will not disappoint the owner of the site, since such a fence is simple, practical and reliable enough. In specialized stores, the net is offered to consumers in rolls, which are easy to deliver to the work site.

How to make and where is it in demand?

Undoubtedly, before any summer resident and owner of a private courtyard, the question arose: how to make a fence from a chain-link with your own hands? This material is in demand in every subsidiary farm.

Such fences are most appropriate to arrange in summer cottages; ponds, poultry houses, livestock pens and other small areas that require fencing can be fenced with a net.

Tip: In order to extend the life of the mesh, try to purchase a galvanized version of it.

A fence made of such a mesh can be of 2 types:

  • Tension;
  • Sectional.

Tension fence

The device of the first option does not present any difficulty, since complex tools are not needed here or welding is not required, the possibility of using wooden supports (pipes) is not excluded.

It is enough to dig pipes into the ground, and what they will be, round or square, does not matter in principle.

Sectional fencing

In this case, the situation is different, since it is supposed to install the mesh in metal frames, after which the sectional installation of the fence is carried out.

If you need to build a fence in a short time, then use the first option.

Installing a pull fence

Let's start by telling you what actions you need to take to build a tension fence from a chain-link mesh.

Materials for work

  • At the initial stage, you should decide on the amount of material that will be required to carry out the work;
  • It is necessary to measure the perimeter of the fenced area, and for this purpose, you should install four corner posts and pass a cord through them, the length of which will allow you to obtain the necessary data.

Knowing the required amount of mesh, it is easier to calculate how to correctly make a fence from a mesh netting, how many support posts and other auxiliary materials are needed, such as:

  • Poles made of wood or metal;
  • Fastening materials (rope, strong wire);
  • The netting itself is a chain-link.

On the construction market, such a mesh is presented in several varieties.

It is distinguished by its shape of the cells and their size. But, if the first parameter does not play a special role, then in the second case, the large size of the cells will not work, for example, in the case when the yard where the poultry is kept is fenced off. Since chicks will be able to crawl through such meshes.

The height of the future fence from the chain-link mesh is equal to the width of the roll.

Install the columns

As already mentioned, the posts can be wooden or metal, the second material is more durable in use due to its high strength.

But wooden posts are also a good material, because the netting does not differ in windage, only one end of the wooden post (which will be dug into the ground) needs to be pre-treated with special mastic with waterproofing properties.

A short instruction will allow you to describe all the steps:

  • To make recesses for installing posts, it is optimal to use a special drill, which can be either mechanical or gasoline.
  • The height of the post depends on the width of the netting roll, that is, if this parameter is 2m, then the post must be at least 2.95m.
  • The pillars should be installed at a distance of no more than 2.5 m, with a depth of their digging into the ground from 70 cm to 1 m, so that the submerged part is 10-15 cm below the level of its freezing.
  • As soon as the pits are prepared, their bottom should be covered with small stones and rubble to prevent the pillars from sinking.

Tip: If we are talking about metal pillars, then it is also permissible to carry out concreting. For these purposes, you can prepare a concrete mixture yourself. The standard option requires the combination of ingredients such as cement, sand, crushed stone, taken in a ratio of 1: 3: 5, or use a ready-made brand of mixture No. 150.

If concreting is carried out, then it takes time for the mixture to dry - it takes 2-3 days.

Installation of mesh netting

After the pillars have taken their place, you can safely proceed with the installation of the chain-link mesh.

If it is supposed to be fastened to wooden posts, then in this case nails or special staples are used.

And the mesh is attached to the metal pillars with hooks, wire and welding.

It is necessary to pull the chain-link in such a way that it does not sag later, that is, as tight as possible.

All the details, if desired, can be viewed on the video.

Tip: Start tensioning the net from any corner post, and to prevent sagging, you can pass strong wire or reinforcement through the top mesh and secure it over the posts.

Sectional fence

In this case, almost the same materials are required as for the first option. It is necessary to add corners for the manufacture of fence sections and equipment such as a welding machine. In this regard, both the complexity of the installation work and the total cost of the fence increase.

Manufacturing technology

  • A frame is welded from a steel corner;
  • The mesh is stretched and fixed inside the frame;
  • The prepared sections are attached to metal poles, since there is no question of wooden options here, which requires welding.

According to its parameters, it is more durable, reliable and durable in comparison with tension.

In order to exclude the possibility of water and excessive moisture getting inside the columns, it is recommended to close them from above with special plugs. This can be done using self-made elements, or using industrial designs that, in addition to protection, also play a decorative role.

If a chain-link with an anti-corrosion coating is chosen for the fence, then its service life can reach 20 years. An ordinary mesh without a protective coating can become unusable after five years, but this is one way to save money if you need to make a temporary fence.

Conclusion

The netting chain-link as a fence allows you to quickly and reliably enclose a site with a minimum cost of money and time. The price of such a fence is low, it protects the site well from intrusion, perfectly transmits light without restricting the view, and is great for fencing adjacent borders between neighbors.

Installation of a chain-link fence is considered the most popular option for arranging a metal fence around a private house, country cottage and many other objects. Its cost is low, and the installation of such a fence can be done by hand.

1 Varieties of mesh-netting for fences

The mesh we are interested in is currently presented on the construction market in three variations:

The indicated types of mesh can have cells of different shapes (diamond-shaped and rectangular ones are popular), which are described by different geometric parameters (the standard cell size varies within 2.5-6 centimeters). For fencing land and summer cottages, it is recommended to install a grid with cells of 4-5 centimeters.

2 Installation of a mesh-netting fence - what materials are required?

Do-it-yourself installation of fences of this type does not cause difficulties even for those people who rarely do something on their own. The main thing is to calculate everything correctly and purchase the required amount of mesh and additional materials. The latter include:

  • concrete (usually an inexpensive M200 grade material is used);
  • special mounts;
  • support posts made of metal, wood or concrete.

In most cases, the installation of chain-link fences is carried out using metal supports. Such pillars are rightfully considered the most reliable and truly durable. Experts advise purchasing pillars of a square or round profile with a cross section of 6-12 centimeters.

When doing work with their own hands, resourceful citizens use old ones as supports, which significantly reduces the cost of installing a fence. But it is better, of course, to buy ready-made poles made specifically for arranging fences. To such supports (usually they are sold in a painted form), special hooks are initially welded.

It makes sense to use wood poles only in cases where it is planned to install a temporary fence or if there is a free (very cheap) wooden material. Please note that bark must be removed from the support beams and poles, and the part of the tree that will be buried in the ground must be thoroughly coated with mastic with high waterproofing properties.

In many respects, concrete pillars are in no way inferior to metal ones (they do not rust, they are very durable, therefore they can literally stand for centuries), but their cost is quite high. In addition, it is not easy to attach the mesh to such supports - it is required to braid the concrete structure with a steel cable, use clamps. This makes installation much more difficult.

There are two ways to equip a chain-link fence with your own hands:

  • fix the wire in sections (frames) made of a metal corner;
  • stretch the mesh between the supports.

Installation of a sectional fence, as you yourself understand, requires additional costs. But from the point of view of aesthetics, it looks more preferable. But the second option for arranging the fence with your own hands can be implemented much faster without investing excessive finances in the fence. We will consider it in more detail.

3 How is the installation of tension fences made of a chain-link mesh?

At the first stage of the installation work, you need to mark the territory. For these purposes, small pegs should be placed in the corners of the site, take a cord or construction thread and pull them between the stakes. The resulting length of the thread will tell us how many meters of the chain-link mesh will need to be purchased (we advise you to add a couple more meters of wire just in case).

After that, we will decide on the places where we will drive in the supports. It is recommended to install the poles at a distance of 2.5 meters from each other (a greater distance cannot be taken, since the mesh we use is a sagging material). To calculate the number of required supports, measure the length of each side of the future fence and divide the resulting number by 2.5. If your fence will have a total length of 50 meters, you will need exactly 20 support posts, if 60 meters - 30, and so on.

The installation of the pillars is carried out in prepared recesses in the ground (they can be made with an ordinary shovel and a drill). The optimum depth of the pits is 120–150 centimeters. Please note that you first need to install supports at the corners of the site, and only then mount other pillars. Crushed stone is poured onto the bottom of the pipe recesses (in an even layer), tamped down, and then a layer of ordinary sand is added and tamping is also performed.

We begin to put pillars in properly prepared pits. This must be done strictly vertically (it is best to use a plumb line). After that, recesses with pipes are poured with a solution made of cement (two parts), sand (one part), crushed stone (one part) and water. First, sand and cement are mixed, then crushed stone and water are added. The mixture must be thoroughly mixed in order to obtain a solution that is not very liquid, but also not "tough".

After the installation of all the pillars is completed, the first stage of work on arranging the fence with your own hands can be considered completed. The concrete will take 6-8 days to harden.

In principle, it is possible to fill the support pipes not with concrete, but use a mixture of soil with rubble stone. Then you don't have to wait a week for the concrete to harden. But in this case, the pillars may not hold so reliably, so it is better to use a solution of concrete, crushed stone and sand.

4 Features of the process of stretching the mesh and its attachment to the supports

After the concrete solution has dried, we proceed to the second stage of arranging a reliable fence on our site. First, using manual arc welding, we weld hooks onto the supports. Hooks can be made from any metal material you have (steel bars, thick wire, regular nails, and so on).

When the hooks are welded on, we straighten the roll of the netting and start pulling it. The operation should be started from the corner support. We hang the mesh on the welded fasteners. In the very first row, it is advisable to thread a reinforcing bar or thick (diameter - about 4 millimeters). To prevent the fence from bending down and sagging, a wire or a bar is welded to the post.

Then we unwind the required length of the mesh, thread the bar (wire) vertically into it at some distance from the connection zone between the support and the mesh and begin to pull our fence. You need to carry out this operation together.

After pulling, it will be necessary to install a thick wire (or a bar) horizontally at a distance slightly above the bottom edge of the fence and below the top. Now you can weld the bar to the support. By analogy, we carry out tension and fastening of all subsequent sections of the mesh. Congratulations, you've built your own fence!

The netting netting is an ideal material for the construction of a light fence or fence. The sun's rays pass through it perfectly, so it can often be found when fencing garden beds and gardens. It is also often used to separate the territories of neighboring plots. Installation of a fence using a chain-link mesh does not require special knowledge and skills. In order to put up such a fence, it is enough just to study the technology of its construction. And everyone can cope directly with the construction.

Mesh netting - what kind of "fruit"

The chain-link is a metal construction raw material, durable and inexpensive when compared with wood or corrugated board. You can buy such a mesh at any hardware store. It is produced in a roll. This is one of the advantages of purchasing such material, it is very convenient to transport it.

There is no need to hire specialized construction crews to install a chain-link fence. Even a schoolboy can build it. And this can be done in two ways: by sectional installation and by the method of tensioning the material.

The advantages of this material include the following qualities:

  • it is an inexpensive material.
  • no special skills are needed to build a fence from it. It's easy and simple to build.
  • the site is not hidden from sunlight.
  • the chain-link has a long service life.
  • to decorate such a fence, you can let climbing plants grow on it.
  • having installed such a fence, you will not need to repair it, tint it, etc.

Everything would be fine, but such material also has disadvantages:

  • it's hard to hide privacy behind a grid. To do this, it needs to be decorated, for example, with climbing plants.
  • no sound insulating properties.
  • if you put a non-galvanized mesh, then it rusts quickly enough.

Grid views (table)

Type nameDescriptionPhoto
Non-galvanized networkThe cheapest material presented. Only temporary fences are made with it, since rust quickly appears on it, often even immediately, as soon as the first rains have passed. Its service life is no more than three to four years. Of course, such a mesh can be painted or coated with water-repellent agents. But this must be repeated with some frequency. And as a result, it can be much more expensive than purchasing a galvanized look
Galvanized netIt is initially protected from moisture. Visually more attractive when compared with the previous chain-link. It looks beautiful on a sectional fence. Naturally, it costs a little more than the non-galvanized version. But the game is worth the candle. This option is much more practical, because its service life is many times longer, and it does not need to be tinted.
PlasticizedMesh with a special polymer coating that does not corrode. This coating is not only very durable, but also has a wide range of colors. It is possible to choose a color that will match, for example, the roof of the house. Most often you can see the blue and green chain-link. Less commonly red, white, or yellow

What materials need to be purchased, drawing

Pay attention to the choice of support posts. Most conveniently, pipes are made of metal with a square section. There are pipes on which the manufacturer himself has already welded hooks for the net. Some people use old pipes, on which they weld these hooks on their own.

Calculation of the required amount of materials

Most often, for the construction of the fence, a 150 cm wide net with 4-5 cm cells is used. The length of a standard roll is 10 meters. In order to prevent sagging of the fence, the support posts are installed at a distance of 200-250 centimeters from each other. Therefore, one roll requires five posts. The support posts should protrude 100 millimeters above the ground above the netting. They should go into the ground by 1/3 of their length.

Now it is clear that for the construction of, for example, a 30-meter fence, it is necessary to purchase 3 rolls of chain-link and 16 posts 230–150 centimeters long. Each of the posts must have at least three hooks. If they are on the poles initially, then no problem. And if they are not, then they need to be welded. Therefore, we multiply 16 posts by 3 hooks for each, we get 48 hooks. They need to be purchased and attached to the posts using a welding machine.

If the fence is planned to be sectional, then the number of sections is set on the basis that the length of one is 200-250 centimeters, the width is 150 centimeters. Knowing these parameters, you can calculate the required number of metal corners, for which, by the way, there are also recommended requirements. It is most convenient to use corners of 4x4 centimeters, the thickness of which is 5 millimeters.

We put a stretch fence from a chain-link

A stretch fence can be delivered much faster than a sectional fence and it will be less expensive in terms of cost. To erect a fence, you just need to mark the territory, prepare pits for the support posts, install these posts and mount the mesh on hooks. Let's look at the process step by step.

Even if you've pulled the net really really well, it will still sag over time. To avoid this, you just need to pass reinforcing wire or long steel rods through the cells of the chain-link. They must be passed through the cells through the entire perimeter of the fence, leaving 50–70 millimeters from the upper edge of the mesh, and welded to the support posts.

Some also thread such a wire along the lower edge of the chain-link 200 millimeters from the surface of the earth.

DIY sectional fence

First, you need to mark and install the support posts. The process is practically no different from the previous one. Unless, hooks are not attached to the posts, but special metal plates measuring 150x50 millimeters and 5 millimeters thick. They must be welded one at a time from the top and bottom of the support pillar, retreating 200 millimeters from the edge.

When welding the section to the supports, try to place the welds on the same level. Even the smallest deviation will be clearly visible and the aesthetic appearance will be lost.

We decorate the fence (table)

Decoration optionDescriptionPhoto
Colored chain-linkThis is the easiest way to customize your fence. You can paint it yourself or purchase it already painted. This also includes a plasticized mesh. A competent choice of shade will perfectly complement the overall design of your site
Climbing plantsThis method is also quite simple and popular among summer residents. Bindweed, climatis or morning glory can be put on the net. The netting netting is a very good support for these types of plants. Thus, the boring fence seems to come to life and transform. Naturally, it looks beautiful only in the warm season. In winter, the fence will lose its attractiveness. Such a fence will hide your privacy from neighbors' eyes for a while.
Plant trees and shrubs around the perimeterThis option, like the previous one, is classified as a "hedge". Only some species of plants remain green in the cold, and the fence will not lose its attractiveness. Thuja, yew, climbing rose, wild rose, spirea are planted. Often the choice falls on fruiting plants, for example, blackberries, barberries, chokeberries and others. Naturally, such a fence needs constant care. This decorative design of the fence, too, like the previous one, will hide you from the eyes passing by
Decorative chain-linkThere is a company in Denmark that manufactures fences. It was they who came up with such a network. In it, the wire is woven so that a variety of patterns are obtained that look like lace from a distance.
Fence gardenYou can easily hang various pots and containers for flowers on the net. Sometimes garden plants are planted in them. The second option will appeal to those who have a small plot of land. As a result, it is both beautiful and useful, and because of the fence, no one sees what you are doing on the site
Street artMany have old skeins of knitting threads at home. They can be cross-stitched onto the fence mesh. Thus, interesting, individual and striking fences are obtained. This type of decoration is gaining its popularity in Europe and is already considered an urban art. Why not decorate our fences in this way. Moreover, it is quite cheap.
Photo gridThe use of a polymer mesh with an image applied to it will help to give the fence an individual and beautiful look in a very short time. It is durable, is not afraid of bad weather, the color does not fade. The pattern on the net is located on one side only. On the other hand, the chain-link is white.

Video: self-installation of a tension fence from a chain-link

Self-installation of such a fence is a simple process. Now you know that. Such a fence is cheap, beautiful (if decorated), easy to assemble, durable. In general, what many of us need. Good luck!
