How to glue the wallpaper. How to glue paper wallpaper on the wall: photo-video instruction. Organization of the working area

Today, wall murals are often used in the interior decoration of an apartment or a country house. This finishing material allows you to decorate walls and visually expands the space, therefore it is especially popular with owners of living space in apartment buildings. Before you glue the wallpaper on the walls, you need to find out which products are best to choose and how to apply them.

Wall murals are classified according to many features, but there are 3 main factors.

Density

For this indicator, the material is:

  1. 90-120 g / sq. m. Usually it is paper wallpaper, similar to the products of the Soviet period. The base is very thin, therefore, when unfolding, transporting and pasting, products require careful handling. The service life is quite short, but the cost is the lowest. You can glue such wallpaper yourself on PVA glue.
  2. 150-250 g / sq. m. Most often, the base is made of vinyl. The thickness of the material allows it to be embossed; therefore, there are models with embossed patterns. Pasting can also be done independently, but with special glue.
  3. 300-400 g / sq. m. These wallpapers are considered the best in terms of price and quality. They can last 10-15 years, provided they are applied and used correctly.
  4. More than 400 g / sq. m. The most dense and durable products, while the most expensive.

Photowall-paper with a density of 300-400 g / sq. m are considered the best option, they are resistant to light mechanical damage and are able to hide minor wall defects

Material

Depending on the materials used in the production, wallpaper has certain performance characteristics.

Paper

The simplest and most accessible view. Today they are used extremely rarely due to their low strength. They are suitable only if you need to quickly and inexpensively renovate the premises for a short period. In other situations, it is better to purchase wallpaper made of modern materials.

Of the advantages, only low cost, availability and the absence of the need to use special adhesives can be noted. There are many more disadvantages:

  • Low moisture resistance.
  • Sun exposure.
  • After the glue dries, defects will appear on the surface.

In addition, there is a difficulty in gluing: if it is not enough to saturate the wallpaper with glue, then they will not stick to the surface. If you apply a lot of composition, then the paper will get wet and the wallpaper will creep.

Non-woven

One of the most popular types of photowall-paper today, it looks like paper. The fact is that non-woven material is a non-woven material consisting of cellulose, so it has some resemblance to paper. Advantages:

  • Saving glue. The composition should be applied only to the wall.
  • Ease of pasting.
  • Reusable.
  • Plastic. The wallpaper will not tear due to the building's shrinkage.
  • They allow you to mask minor defects.

Textile

Analogs of this material have been known to mankind for several centuries. Such wallpapers belong to the category of elite ones, so their price is appropriate. They are made from natural materials: linen, silk, cotton and so on. The base can be paper, PVC or non-woven, there are self-adhesive models. The main advantage is the long service life. Among the shortcomings, one can single out the high cost and inconsistency with some modern interior styles.

The textile version has good sound and thermal insulation, this type of photo wallpaper is often produced seamless

Vinyl

Wallpaper, which is made on the basis of one of the types of plastic, so they are resistant to moisture and very durable. But such a material requires a perfectly prepared surface, otherwise folds will appear.

3D Wallpaper

These products are singled out in a separate group, since they cope better than others with the task of visually expanding the space. They are usually placed all over the wall from ceiling to floor. For the manufacture of such products, non-woven is used. The advantage is a wide assortment, the disadvantage is the complexity of gluing.

Figure location

Do-it-yourself photowall-paper gluing begins with determining the location of the image:

  1. Zonal. In this case, the wallpaper is glued to one section of the wall. This position is used to create emphasis and visually increase the height of the ceiling.
  2. Modular. The product occupies a part of the surface, while the image is made up of two, three or more fragments.
  3. Corner. Wallpaper is glued to a part of the area of adjacent walls.
  4. Panoramic. Wallpaper occupies the entire surface area. They can consist of a single piece or several stripes.

Types of wallpaper by pattern location: 1 - zonal, 2 - modular, 3 - corner, 4 - panoramic

Is pasting over old wallpaper acceptable?

The most difficult and time-consuming stage is the preparatory one, when you need to remove the previous coating. In this case, the question arises, is it possible to glue photowall-paper on old products? This is possible if the material fits snugly against the wall and retains its original integrity. Also, in order to glue on old wallpaper, you need to check if mold has formed on the surface.

Important! It is possible to glue new photowall-paper on old one only on condition that there are no relief patterns on the existing covering. Otherwise, the new material will not stick to the wall.

Technology of pasting walls with photowall-paper

It is quite simple to glue the wallpaper on the walls, it is more difficult to prepare and mark the surface.

Instruments

The following tools are required:

  • tape measure, ruler, marker;
  • building level;
  • container for making glue;
  • stationery knife;
  • rubber spatula and roller;
  • wide brush, foam sponge;
  • rags;
  • ladder.

Preparation of the base

Regardless of the thickness and density of the purchased wallpaper, the surface must be carefully prepared, otherwise defects will appear after the solution dries.

  1. With the help of the building level, it is necessary to determine the blockage of the wall. If the curvature of the surface is small, you can treat it with a finishing putty. In case of significant blockage, leveling with plaster or drywall will be required.
  2. Next, you need to explore the walls, find all the potholes, cracks and other defects. Metal elements protruding from the surface are cut off with a grinder, and screws or nails are removed. Large potholes are sealed with cement-sand mortar, which dries for a long time.

    Attention! Until the mixture is completely dry, no further finishing work can be started. It is also forbidden to speed up the process with heating devices.

  3. After plastering, it is necessary to treat the walls with a finishing filler, and when it hardens, apply two layers of deep penetration primer at intervals of 4 hours. This is necessary to increase the adhesion and better contact of the wallpaper with the surface.

Stages of preparation of the base: 1 - determination of the wall blockage, 2 - filling holes, 3 - finishing puttying of the walls, 4 - surface priming

Making glue

This process must be carried out in strict accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Usually, for preparation, pour the dry composition into a clean container, add half the required amount of water and mix thoroughly. Then gradually introduce the remaining amount of water, mix again and let the glue brew (the time is indicated by the manufacturer). After that, mix again, the composition is ready to use.

Marking

While the glue is infusing, you can do the markup, which will determine the exact location of the image. The first step is to attach the wallpaper and mark its borders. Then use the level to draw horizontal and vertical lines. Depending on the material, the area is divided into squares or rectangles of appropriate sizes.

The process of gluing canvases

Now about how to properly glue the wallpaper on the walls. The general technology is as follows:

  1. Apply glue to a section of the wall. If paper wallpapers are used, then you need to spread them too. Do not glue all strips of material with glue so that they do not get wet.
  2. Fold the strip three times and leave to soak for 3-10 minutes. In this case, it is very important to act carefully so that rubbed lines do not appear at the fold.
  3. Glue the top piece. It is applied to the marked wall and aligned along the lines.
  4. Use a rubber spatula to drive the air out from under the wallpaper from the center to the edges.
  5. Glue the lower part on the same side. The application technology is the same, but it is important to combine the pattern.
  6. All the fragments are glued in turn so that a clear image is obtained.

Some wallpaper models are joined end-to-end, and some with an overlap, therefore it is recommended to first spread them on the floor to determine the join. It is easier to draw up the borders of the pasted wallpaper if they have to go end-to-end with each other. To do this, the canvas is simply adjusted to the previous one.

For overlapping pasting, it is necessary to combine the fragments so that the correct pattern is formed. Using a marker and a ruler, you need to draw a line at the junction and draw along it with a clerical knife, cutting off the excess part. The resulting joint should be smeared with a brush. Finally, it is recommended to roll all seams with a rubber roller and remove any glue residues.

Wall murals are one of the most interesting and effective ways to decorate a living space, to give it coziness and originality. Subject to the technology of pasting, the wallpaper will last a long time and will become a real decoration of the house.

Photo wallpaper has become a traditional way of decorating apartments and country houses. Experts say that this type of wallpaper is able to transform any interior beyond recognition. To make it modern and charmingly beautiful, so the question of how to glue the wallpaper on the wall is still relevant.

Wall murals were fashionable some time ago, later they were practically forgotten, but after a dozen years they are back in fashion and decorate the walls of many apartments and houses.

The only "but", we are talking about high-quality photowall-paper, because often in the markets and in stores they sell dull, low-quality canvases.

Advice! If you have your own plot that you would like to decorate the wall with, but you cannot find it in the offered assortment, entrust the production of exclusive photowall-paper to specialists.

Before buying, you should decide on the plot that will flaunt on your wall, as well as think about the preferred main colors, while you can overshadow the questions of how to glue paper wallpaper and how to deal with vinyl or non-woven fabric.

Let's dwell on the plot and colors.

Photo wallpaper, perfectly in harmony with the overall design

Now exotic landscapes are considered fashionable, but before buying such a canvas, think about whether they will fit into the overall picture of the interior of an apartment or house.

So, wall murals - how to glue and not miss.

Materials and tools

Before you stick the wallpaper, you need to stock up on everything you need.

So, we will use:

  • photowall-paper;
  • a package of glue for photo wallpaper (it must be on a natural basis);
  • capacity;
  • a brush or brush for applying glue;
  • rubber roller;
  • stationery knife;
  • ruler or tape measure;
  • level;
  • pencil;
  • putty knife;
  • acrylic primer;
  • sandpaper;
  • spoon or stick.

Sequence of work

Now that we have everything, we can begin to consider the question of how to properly paste the wallpaper.

Surface preparation

Photo wallpaper in the interior of the hall

  • We very carefully clean the wall from the old finish, level out all the errors, cover it with a primer on top. An acrylic primer is perfect for this, but can be replaced with fine plaster or plaster putty.
  • The wall should be smooth. The surface must be completely dry before gluing.
  • If you decide to stick the canvas on a sliding surface, you must first clean it with sandpaper. We do this so that when gluing the picture does not distort and "sits" well on the surface.

Note! The air temperature in the room during work should be from +5 to +20 ° С. Also exclude the possibility of a draft in this room.

Drawing assembly and markup

  • We sit on the floor and begin to collect the drawing, measuring its area. Based on these measurements, we will build a sketch of the location of our drawing on the wall.
  • We also use them to measure the space on the wall for each element of the picture, taking into account the distances from the ceiling, corners, floor. For this stage we need a level and a ruler.

Glue application

Before gluing the wallpaper, you need to prepare the glue, following the manufacturer's instructions on the package. The resulting mass should be easy to apply and uniform.

Now let's start applying the glue. We begin to apply it to the back surface of the upper left element with a brush or roller.

Do not fold the glued piece in half, as is customary when gluing ordinary wallpaper.

We apply glue to the upper left square of the wall, to the area on which we will attach our glued elements.

Note! The wallpaper that we have impregnated with glue must be attached no later than two minutes later.

You can do it a little differently - first saturate the wall with glue, and then the wallpaper. The sequence depends on the quality of the glue and the density of the wallpaper paper.

Direct gluing

Photo wallpaper in the interior of the bedroom

  • The canvas is pasted from the upper left corner of the composition and from the same corner of the image element. Smooth the paper with a rubber roller.
  • Moving vertically, we continue to glue the elements. Having glued one vertical strip, we move on to the next, again from top to bottom.
  • Each element must be adjusted to fit the markings and avoid overlapping joints.
  • If glue drops on the face of the image, do not wipe them off with a cloth, but blot lightly with a sponge.

Completion of work

After finishing the gluing work, cut off the excess canvas with a clerical knife. If the image takes up an entire wall, mount the skirting boards on top of the image.

Now we understand how to properly glue photowall-paper in order to get an excellent result.

Wall murals allow you to quickly and easily diversify the decor of walls and ceilings. They are sold as pre-cut and numbered sheets that must be arranged in a specific order. It is important to properly prepare the wall, as it is necessary to glue the wallpaper on a perfectly flat base. In general, even a novice master can perform the work, since it does not require much experience and special knowledge.

Where to start gluing photowall-paper?

So, you bought a wallpaper to create a cozy corner in the room. Before choosing, we determined their size and location on the wall. Surface preparation includes the following steps:

  • leveling the wall with plaster;
  • filling holes and crevices if alignment is not performed;
  • priming the surface with a deep penetration primer.

How to prepare a wall with a finished renovation?

It often happens that repairs have already been made on the wall, but after that a decision is made to change the design. Before gluing the wallpaper on the wall with a finished repair, the surface must be cleaned to fit the size of the insert. For work, you will need the following tool:

  • wallpaper knife;
  • long ruler or rule;
  • metal spatula 15-20 cm wide.

The sequence of cleaning the wall from wallpaper:

  1. Draw with a pencil the lines of the abutment of the main wallpaper and photo wallpaper.
  2. Attach a ruler, draw along it with a wallpaper knife. Remove unnecessary material. Use a spatula, and places where the wallpaper cannot be removed can be blotted with a wet sponge or sprayed with a spray bottle.
  3. In the cleaned area, repair holes, dents, if necessary. In this case, the alignment with a layer of plaster is not done in order to avoid a sharp drop in the wall sections.

Do I need to wash the whitewash?

If the wall is painted or whitewashed, it must also be cleaned, since you cannot glue the wallpaper onto the paint. They may come off and the work will have to be redone. The same applies to whitewashing. If the wall is treated with lime or chalk, the whitewash must be washed off with a brush, sponge and warm water. It is better to work in protective clothing, goggles, rubber gloves.

Making the markup

Included with the photo wallpaper is always a diagram of the location of the sheets on the wall. It is important to follow it exactly, this will allow you to properly glue the most complex pattern. Markings are made on the wall, which indicates the location of each sheet. It is important to place them strictly vertically and horizontally so that the drawing is not distorted. For this, the markings are made using a plumb line and a building level. It is better to draw with a simple pencil, rather than a marker, ink or gel pen.

Types of wallpaper and glue selection

Work begins from the first sheet, then take the 2nd, 3rd, etc., according to the manufacturer's numbering. The brand of adhesive must match the type of material selected. For example, if it is paper, choose an adhesive labeled "For paper wallpaper" or "For all types of wallpaper".

The construction market offers the following types of photowall-paper:

  • paper (glossy or matte);
  • fabric (special glue is included in the kit or you need to buy glue for a textile base);
  • vinyl with imitation of various textures: sand, plaster, bark, dust, leather, fresco, frost, painting, weaving, linen.

Rules for gluing photowall-paper

It is important to glue each sheet qualitatively at the stage of pressing it against the wall. Here it is better to take a pressure roller, since you need to glue the wallpaper so that it does not stretch along the edges even by a few millimeters. Otherwise, it will lead to displacement of the joints and distortion of the pattern. It is better to use a roller with soft rubber, it is such a coat that is designed to press the surfaces.

The rules for gluing are similar to those for standard wallpaper. Only the order changes: work starts from the upper left corner and continues to glue the first horizontal row. Then go to the 2nd row, starting from the left side. It should be noted that wallpaper can be glued correctly from any angle. The main thing is to first finish one horizontal row, then proceed to another.

Additionally, the joint seams should be coated. To do this, it is better to take a thin brush so as not to stain the neighboring canvas with glue. Many craftsmen use PVA glue for joints. It should be noted that after drying, it gives a yellowish tint, and it is most noticeable on a white background. Any excess glue should be removed with a soft dry cloth. Just as when gluing ordinary wallpaper, it is necessary to exclude a draft in the room until the wall is completely dry.

Is it possible to glue photomurals on other wallpapers

Immediately, we note that the option of gluing new photowall-paper on old wallpaper exists, although this operation requires observing the following number of factors:

  • The textured ornament of the old coating should not be more than 0.2-0.3 mm thick;
  • Photowall-paper should have the simplest version of pasting;
  • Their density should be from 200 g / m2 or more;
  • The old base must be water-repellent and free from pronounced defects.

Structural drawing requires increased attention. Provided that its depth differs from the parameters stated above, it is worth abandoning the gluing - there is a high probability that the pattern will appear through the wallpaper glued on top.

Remember that wall murals with a solid pattern or halftones are unlikely to completely hide the pattern under them. Preference should be given to options with a low-contrast small print. Canvases with a forest depicted on them, thick grass, many lights, a vibrant metropolis or an orchard look great.

If there is a need to glue photowall-paper on non-woven wallpaper, it is worth taking into account their density - it should correspond as much as possible to the paper one. The quality of the glue is also of great importance - its wrong choice can nullify all efforts.

If there is a discrepancy between the parameters of the old and new wallpaper, it is better not to glue it. In this situation, you need to be patient and first get rid of the old coating.

How to properly glue wall murals on the wall, since they will attract the eye when you first inspect the room. Think carefully not only about the color scheme, but also what you want to see on them.

Wall mural is one of the strongest design tools that can dramatically change the appearance of a room in an instant. But at the same time, you can spoil the interior. Therefore, you need to know not only what to choose, but also competently be able to glue photowall-paper.

Today we will talk exactly about how to glue photowall-paper correctly so that it looks good in the future. Wallpaper can be glued to one, here.

Tool

  1. A bucket or bowl of glue.
  2. A clean cloth to remove excess glue.
  3. Roulette, pencil or ruler.
  4. Roller or brush for applying glue.
  5. Spatula, knife, scissors.

How to choose glue

  • You can choose glue and our production. In terms of quality, it will be the same as imported, but cheaper.
  • The glue must be moisture resistant and must not have strong odors when opening the package.
  • It is necessary to dilute the glue according to the instructions. Read it directly on the package. One of the rules is that the thicker the wallpaper, the thicker it is necessary to make the glue mass.

Preparing the walls

It is necessary to glue photowall-paper exclusively on a flat, dry and clean surface. Each bump on the wall will be visible through the thin wallpaper. That's why .

If the walls are even, then they must be carefully removed and the switches, sockets, if any, must be removed. When gluing photo wallpaper in the room, doors and windows must be closed in order to prevent the slightest draft during work and within 24 hours after its end.

Important! You cannot glue the wallpaper on the old wallpaper, as over time, the pattern from the old wallpaper will appear. If the wallpaper has light colors, then it is recommended to paint the walls in the same tone, or simply with white water-based paint.

How to mark a wall

The first step is to spread the sheets on the floor and align the edges to get a single picture. Wall murals on the wall should ideally match at the seams, so wall markings are very important in the gluing process.

Start from any of the top corners. Using a ruler, plumb line and pencil, mark the location for the first piece. You should have an angle of exactly 90 degrees between the horizontal and vertical lines. in the same way, we mark each of the fragments along the entire wall.

Step-by-step process of gluing photowall-paper

  • Using a sharp knife and a ruler, we cut off the white fields on the extreme fragment of the wallpaper.
  • We put each piece correctly on a clean floor, face down. The first fragment should be the topmost one.
  • Apply glue with a brush or roller. Be careful not to get any lumps of glue. If there are any, we delete them immediately. You can also coat the wall with glue.
  • Exactly according to the markings, we glue the first fragment of the photo wallpaper on the wall and, starting from the center, carefully smooth it out, using a rag or roller. Wipe off excess glue with a clean cloth.
  • Accurately and accurately aligning the drawing, we glue the rest of the fragments. In those places where there was an outlet or switch, carefully cut out circles.

It is necessary to apply a protective layer from ultraviolet radiation to the pasted wallpaper so that they do not lose their bright colors.

Is it easier to glue self-adhesive wallpaper?

Most people think that it is much easier and faster to decorate a room with self-adhesive wallpaper. However, it is not. It is easier to glue the wallpaper with glue, since after gluing it to the wall, you can not only level it if necessary, but also take it away and reapply the glue to glue it. The situation is different with self-adhesive wallpaper.

It often happens that the fragment does not even have time to be carried to the wall, as it accidentally twisted and stuck together. It is virtually impossible to unstick the self-adhesive wallpaper without damaging the drawing.

Once you have separated the protective film from the self-adhesive, you need to quickly and accurately glue the piece to the wall. It is very difficult to do all this efficiently and quickly, especially for an unprepared person.

If you pasted the fragment and the result is wrinkles, then you will not smooth them out in any way. Especially if you decide to glue the wallpaper on the ceiling, then there are no options at all.

Video on how to glue photowall-paper with high quality

Gluing photowall-paper is an amusing and quite interesting business. They will decorate any design and interior. The appearance of the room after work will instantly change and, of course, for the better, if the wallpaper is pasted with high quality. There is absolutely no need for haste in this matter. Try to do everything neatly, and the new picture on the wall will delight not only your family, but all guests in your home.

The desire to decorate their home is characteristic of the vast majority of people. There are many options for realizing this desire, from time-consuming and expensive to fast and relatively cheap options. One of the most common and effective ways of decorating an interior is wall murals, which create a plot in the room that visually enlarges the room, attracts the eye and makes the interior more elegant. To obtain the best result, you need to know how to glue photowall-paper, be able to choose the right materials and tools.

Types of photowall-paper

The ones that exist today are very diverse in their quality and material. They have different properties, require a different attitude, gluing technology.

The choice of base material

When choosing a material, it is necessary to take into account all the parameters and properties so as not to make annoying mistakes.

Correctly selected wallpaper can add unusualness to the interior.

Vinyl based

The material is resistant to moisture, easily tolerates ultraviolet irradiation. These qualities make the material durable. Caring for vinyl wall murals is simple and does not require large expenses. The material is dense, capable of hiding some flaws in the surface of the walls.

Vinyl-based photomurals are resistant to sunlight

Paper-based

An inexpensive option for photowall-paper. The paper does not tolerate moisture, when exposed to direct sunlight, the drawing often fade, some color shades disappear. Gluing paper wallpaper is more common, but you should be very careful.

When gluing paper photowall-paper, skill and accuracy are required.

Non-woven base

The most preferred option. Non-woven photowall-paper is able to pass air and is not afraid of moisture. The sun's rays do not pose a serious danger to them. Non-woven photomurals are recognized as the best solution for living quarters.

Non-woven photomurals one of the highest quality

Textile

This kind of material has a realistic effect of upholstering a wall with a cloth. The production technology of such wallpapers is rather complicated, therefore they are highly valued. The material consists of an outer decorative layer made of various types of woven or non-woven material, and an underlay for applying an adhesive. The top layer has all the drawbacks of the fabric - it fades in the sun, is unstable to moisture. The use of such wallpaper is recommended for rooms where there is no access to direct sunlight, exposure to vapors is excluded. Caring for textile wallpaper requires specialized, delicate.

Textile photomurals are very expensive

Variety of textures

There are several criteria for dividing wallpaper according to the textured performance of the top layer.

Photo wallpaper textures produce a different visual effect.

Canvas

The surface of the material is embossed, repeating the texture of the canvas. Small irregularities make the wallpaper matte, which allows you to hide the irregularities of the walls, masks flaws. But you should not use the material to correct the imperfections of the surface of the walls. Wrinkles, bubbles and other irregularities will appear on the canvas glued to an uneven wall. Wallpaper creates a feeling of softness, warmth, well suited for rooms of any type and purpose.

Such photomurals are embossed and rough.

Painting

The imitation of a live drawing made with a palette knife or written with a brush is used. The surface can have the effect of an oil painting, formed by special embossing, or have a smoother texture (depending on the material).

In a similar technique for making photowall-paper, an imitation of a live drawing is used.

Sand texture

A convex pattern is created on the surface, simulating the relief of a sandy surface. The repetition of different fractions of the texture is used. This allows you to diversify the surface and form many options for filling the area of the canvas. Wall murals with imitation of a sandy surface are the most common.

Photo wallpaper with a sandy texture creates a bump effect

Plaster

Embossed surface that allows you to create interesting options for wall decoration. For example, various methods of imitating frescoes are good, the texture of the relief wall covering is successfully repeated. The overall effect of such photowall-paper is distinguished by solidity, respectability, it allows you to create a certain emphasis on certain sections of the walls.

Plaster allows you to create unusual paintings on the walls

3D effect

Photo wallpaper with 3D effect is the most effective way to decorate a room. They have a high expressiveness of three-dimensional rendering of the picture. Such material is able to visually expand a room, create the effect of the presence of flowers, areas of nature, various phenomena or city streets in it. There are several types of 3D photo wallpaper:

  • Standard. Simple drawing with geometric shapes (usually) that does not require adjustment of the sheets.
  • Solitary. Consist of one piece, no adjustment required.
  • Panoramic. They consist of many fragments, can be large and cover 2 or 3 walls, creating the effect of being inside a panorama.

3D effect creates realistic drawing

There are fluorescent versions that are capable of emitting a soft, discreet light in the dark, creating an effect of mystery. The most expensive are LED wallpaper, which consists of millions of small LEDs controlled from a remote control. It becomes possible to change the image at will. Such a spectacular, expensive design is not exactly wallpaper.

How to properly glue photo wallpaper on the wall with your own hands

The technique of sticking photowall-paper differs little from the generally accepted method of gluing ordinary wallpaper. The difference lies in determining the location and following specific rules. It is necessary to use the appropriate types of glue, take into account the characteristics of the material, properly prepare the surface of the walls.

The correct choice of materials and tools is the key to successful gluing of photo wallpaper

Required tools and materials

For gluing wallpaper, you can get by with a minimal set of tools:

  • stationery knife;
  • ruler (best metal, 1 m long);
  • plumb line, building level;
  • brushes for applying glue;
  • clean rags;
  • a stepladder or other plane for the convenience of gluing the upper sheets;
  • rubber roller for rolling cloths. For paper photo wallpaper, you can use foam rubber.

Attention! Sometimes inexperienced craftsmen try to get by with a clothes brush instead of a roller. It is not recommended to use it, as there is a danger of damage to the front surface. In addition, the brush is not able to provide high-quality removal of air bubbles from under the glued cloth.

You also need to prepare the following materials:

  • special primer for better adhesion of wallpaper glue. The use is optional, but some surfaces do not allow high-quality gluing of the wallpaper due to the nature of the coating.
  • wallpaper glue. It is highly recommended to purchase only specialized formulations designed for a specific type of wallpaper. Modern materials are of a fairly high quality, which allows the canvases to be glued to the walls firmly and without flaws. For heavy vinyl or non-woven wallpaper, thicker glue solutions should be used to prevent the web from slipping or lagging during rolling. The amount of adhesive should be sufficient to ensure sufficient application both to the wallpaper sheets and to the wall surface.

Surface preparation

The process of preparing a wall largely depends on its initial state. Depending on this, continuous plastering of the surface along the beacons may be required or the elimination of minor defects with putty. Plastering technology consists of two stages:

  1. Installation of beacons. These are metal strips attached to the wall on plaster or mortar posts that will be used as guides when drawing the plane.
  2. Plastering. Between the lighthouses, a layer of mortar is applied slightly thicker than the distance from the wall to the lighthouses. This layer is then aligned using a rule. After setting, the beacons can be pulled out of the wall and the resulting grooves can be filled with mortar. Sometimes lighthouses are left in the wall.

Plastering the surface along the beacons may be necessary for large defects on the wall

Putty is applied with a spatula. It is used when there are small irregularities, potholes or other small flaws. The thickness of the putty layer should be small, it is recommended to make 1–2 mm of the starting composition and 1–0.5 mm of the finishing one.

Small irregularities in the wall can be corrected by applying an even layer of putty.

After alignment, you should mark the wall to determine the optimal position of the wallpaper.

A good place for the drawing is selected in advance, taking into account the presence of furniture that can cover some of the details of the image. For marking, use a simple medium-hard pencil. It is not recommended to use felt-tip pens or markers, their ink can penetrate even thick materials.

Often, photo wallpaper is pasted over the main layer of wallpaper. The possibility of implementing this option depends on the quality of the wallpaper, its condition and material. The covering must adhere firmly to the wall, with no loose or torn areas. It is not recommended to use a material with a high relief embossing as a backing; bright or fading materials will not work under paper photowall-paper.

It is necessary to choose a brighter and more catchy pattern than the old wallpaper. In some cases, the issue can be solved with the help of photowall-paper with a self-adhesive layer that does not contain moisture and does not have a negative effect on the substrate. At the same time, the technology of sticking such canvases requires caution and accuracy, one person cannot cope with this.

Features of gluing seamless photowall-paper

It is customary to include fabric seamless photowall-paper in this category. They are designed for decorating large surfaces, have a large area and are installed as a single canvas, without joints. The peculiarity of the installation is that there is no traditional gluing, the installation is made like a tapestry - in a baguette frame. The principle is close to the installation of fabric stretch ceilings, corrected for the vertical plane. The option is convenient for walls with certain flaws, since the stretched canvas well masks potholes and dents in the surface, allowing them not to be repaired.

The method of gluing seamless wallpaper is close to the installation of stretch ceilings

There is another way of gluing seamless photo wallpaper, close to the traditional one.

The canvas is glued to the wall, smeared with glue and cured for about 15-20 minutes, so that the glue thickens a little. This will prevent the composition from seeping through the fabric.

The blade is installed with a vertical or horizontal allowance of 5–10 cm for subsequent precise cutting to size. In order not to distort the drawing, vertical lines are first applied to the wall every 1–1.5 m, along which the location of the canvas and the drawing is monitored. This helps to eliminate distortions that occur when over-stretching some sections of the web.

Features of gluing photowall-paper from 4, 8, 12 parts

Photomurals, consisting of several parts, are glued one by one. First, it is necessary to sort the individual fragments, number them in order to eliminate confusion during gluing.

Find out in the instructions how to glue the fragments - end-to-end or overlap.

If a butt installation is foreseen, then usually there are no white edges. For overlapping installation, there is often a narrow white strip along the edges of the parts. It should be carefully cut off, and when gluing the fragment, the overlap should be kept to no more than 4–5 mm.

The work is constantly monitored with the help of lines or a level previously drawn on the wall.

When sticking photowall-paper made of parts, it is necessary to adhere to the order according to the numbering.

Separate fragments, smeared with glue, are installed on the surface as evenly as possible, trying not to skew or move the parts.

Important! You cannot fold parts of the wallpaper in half, this will leave a noticeable strip that is difficult to remove.

Step-by-step performance of work for different types of photowall-paper

The technology is generally identical for all types of material, but there is a need to comply with some requirements. They are associated with the characteristics of the material, its structure, the number of layers, weight and other qualities of the photo wallpaper. In addition, the initial state of the walls, the presence of old (or pre-glued) wallpaper, and other factors that must be taken into account in order to obtain the highest quality result are important.

The main difference lies in the material of the wallpaper, it is he who dictates his requirements for the gluing technology.

To stick the wallpaper correctly, you need to take into account the recommendations for the selected type

Paper-based

Paper murals are demanding on the quality of the wall. This is especially true for thin glossy canvases, their surface glares at the slightest irregularities and gives the impression of sloppy, low-quality work. Thicker embossed wallpaper is less demanding on the condition of the substrate, but it is necessary to prepare the wall in any case.

  1. Marking is applied to the surface of the prepared flat wall. Experts recommend making it from the middle, since the walls are often uneven and asymmetrical. Vertical and horizontal centerlines are drawn, if necessary, additional marks can be applied. This is necessary when there are a large number of fragments.
  2. It is recommended to apply glue both on the wall and on the wallpaper sheets. The layer must be allowed to stand for 3 minutes or a little more for uniform absorption and some expansion of the paper from exposure to moisture. If this moment is not taken into account, the canvases will begin to expand on the wall, which will cause folds or bubbles.
  3. Sticking starts with medium sheets. They must be pre-numbered to avoid confusion when applying the glue. You should constantly check the position of the fragments relative to the reference lines and immediately align the parts without waiting for the glue to set.
  4. Dry paper wallpaper with closed windows and doors. It is imperative to eliminate all drafts; the room temperature should be around 18–20 ° C.
  5. After drying, the edges are neatly trimmed along a ruler (if necessary).

Vinyl

Vinyl wallpapers are quite heavy and demanding on the quality of the glue. The currently existing formulations are quite suitable for most types of material, but it is still necessary to study the instructions. Some types require the use of specific adhesives, this point should be clarified first.

  1. The preparation of the wall is done in the usual way. Old wallpaper is removed, the surface is leveled (putty or solid plaster).
  2. A layer of primer is applied on a flat surface to ensure optimal adhesion of the glue and wallpaper, excluding the absorption of the adhesive into the wall.
  3. The wall plane is marked along the axes of the intended location of the photo wallpaper. Beforehand, you should carefully consider the height and position of the picture relative to the vertical centerline of the wall. This moment is especially important for small canvases that do not cover the entire wall. It is necessary to take into account the location of furniture, lighting, viewing angle and other factors that can change the impression of the wallpaper.
  4. The adhesive composition is diluted according to the instructions. It should be such that it does not soak into the wall, hold the canvas and allow for an even application without lumps or unevenness. Apply to wall and wallpaper, do not fold sheets.
  5. Fragments are glued end-to-end. Vinyl wallpapers often have a large thickness and volumetric embossing, which excludes gluing with an overlap. Particular attention should be paid to the joint lines. There should be no cracks, gaps. In some cases, you have to make a small overlap, and after the glue dries, make a double cutting of the fragments (cut off both sheets at the same time using a ruler with a clerical knife, resulting in a perfect joint).
  6. After the canvas has dried, trimming along the contour, trimming the edges, adjusting the photo wallpaper to the ceiling plinth or other elements of wall decoration is performed.

The joints of photo wallpaper fragments must be carefully adjusted

Important! Do not immediately cover the entire wall surface with an adhesive layer, or too large an area. The adhered glue loses its ability, therefore it is necessary to cover an area of the appropriate size.

Non-woven

The technology of gluing non-woven wallpaper differs little from the technique of installing vinyl canvases.

  1. First, a thorough preparation of the wall is carried out, the elimination of surface flaws, potholes, cracks or other problem areas are repaired. Remove all attachments and remove protruding nails, screws, brackets or mounting panels.
  2. The prepared wall should be carefully primed. If the wall material is loose and strongly absorbs moisture, first apply a layer of primer (deep penetration primer), and then cover with a primer to enhance the adhesion of wallpaper glue and canvas.
  3. After the primer has dried, the wall is marked. The location of the wallpaper is determined and the vertical and horizontal centerlines are drawn.
  4. The adhesive composition must be prepared in accordance with the instructions. Most often, it takes some time to get the finished glue, so you can dilute it in advance, using the holding time for other work (marking, sorting fragments, etc.).
  5. The glue is applied only to the wall. It is recommended to cover an area approximately equal in size to the wallpaper sheet. One of the central fragments is applied first, then all adjacent ones - and so on until the canvas is fully installed.
  6. If the wallpaper consists of one part, gluing is carried out from one edge, carefully straightening the canvas and constantly monitoring the position of the sheet, the correspondence of the axis of the marking and the pattern. You need to work together, large canvases are not installed alone.
  7. Drying the adhesive requires a constant room temperature between 18–20 ° C, completely free of drafts or air currents.
  8. After the glue dries, the final trimming of the edges is carried out, fitting to the decorative elements.

Sticking 3D photowall-paper

Bulk wallpaper requires high-quality wall preparation. It is necessary to eliminate all flaws, even small potholes can spoil the effect of the canvas.

Preparation should be done a few days before wallpapering.

  1. Apply a layer of antifungal primer (if the instructions require it - double layer). This is a mandatory item, since voluminous wallpaper does not allow air to pass through. A damp spot can form on the wall underneath them and mold or mildew can develop.
  2. After the putty and primer layers have dried, the surface is marked for a more accurate installation of the sheet.
  3. For voluminous wallpaper, glue is used that can hold heavy types of canvases. It hardens quickly enough and holds the material firmly, so you need to be ready for quick and non-stop editing: sort the fragments (if any), prepare the tools, arrange for two or three assistants.
  4. The glue is applied only to the wall. The canvas is neatly applied to its surface and spreads over the entire plane. Use a rubber or foam roller to remove wrinkles and air bubbles.
  5. If the 3D wallpaper was made to order, then the canvas will not need to be trimmed. The main condition is the correct choice of location, ensuring the most successful viewing angle, the absence of pieces of furniture obscuring the wallpaper.

Care features

Photowall-paper does not require any special care. If the canvas is located in the living room or bedroom, then periodically the dust is gently brushed off with a vacuum cleaner or dry cloth.

Photo wallpaper needs ordinary care, like other walls of the room

For wallpaper in the kitchen, more drastic measures are often required.

Most types of photowall-paper allow wet cleaning of the surface. The rag should be exactly damp, not soaking the material. The use of detergents is specifically specified in the user manual, different types allow the use of appropriate chemicals. The use of active chemicals (solvents, gasoline, etc.) is strictly prohibited.

Wall murals can significantly change the appearance of a room. They create a powerful informational site that grabs the attention, dominates the room and distracts from the rest of the interior. This feature must be taken into account when choosing a pattern and a place for installing the canvas in order to obtain the maximum decorative effect and organize a harmonious filling of the room.
