Everyone who does not have enough space in the apartment to store their belongings should be aware of how to make a mezzanine in the corridor with their own hands. It is necessary to understand that a construction, made with the mind, will harmoniously complement the interior, and the ceiling will not seem lower.

What does this design look like?

What is a cabinet-like superstructure that is installed under the ceiling. As a matter of fact, the structure is a shelf to which the doors are fixed on the frame. The mezzanine is installed in such a way that with all the remaining sides it adjoins the walls and ceiling.

Where is the best place to install a mezzanine?

This design will look good in any room, in particular in the bedroom or in the kitchen. But in most cases, people prefer to install it in the corridor, which is the most suitable place for it. Even an unprepared person can make a mezzanine with his own hands. This does not require special skills and abilities.

Regular and corner designs

There are two types of mezzanines: regular and corner. The latter are made in the shape of a triangle. The choice of species depends on the taste of the owner of the house, but both options are pretty good. The shelf can be as long as the owner of the room wants, but it is important that households can reach the things at the very end of the mezzanine. Its height is usually about half a meter. When making a mezzanine with your own hands, you need to take this moment into account.

Preparation for installation of the structure

Before installing the mezzanine directly, you need to perform some preliminary steps. It should be understood that the design is easiest to do if the hallway is narrow. First of all, you need to make sure that there is no wiring in this area. For this, either a detector is used. If you don't have these tools, you can just look at the part of the wall above the switches. Usually the wiring is at the top.

With or without doors?

Do not rush to start making a mezzanine above the door with your own hands: first, think about whether you need doors or not. The open design makes it easy to reach things inside, which means you can save time. If you want a mezzanine with doors, you need to understand how to make them correctly.

The sequence of manufacturing mezzanines

The living space of a person is at the bottom at the level of his growth, and the entire volume above is used ineffectively. A mezzanine - a cabinet or shelf installed under the ceiling - will allow you to place a lot of things using a minimum of housing space.

But often the question of how to make a mezzanine is perplexing. Let's deal with this in order.

Let's decide on the type of mezzanine

This could be:
1. stationary mezzanine fixed to the walls;
2. furniture mezzanine installed on cabinets.

Which type is better to choose, you will be prompted by the location of the furnishings. Since the mezzanine will regularly be overhead, its reliability is a vital aspect. Try to avoid a cantilever arrangement, that is, fixing the shelf on one side only.

A good placement option - between the walls... The conclusion immediately suggests itself: the mezzanine should be placed in a corridor or a narrow room (for example, a bathroom or a toilet).

Benefits of installing a mezzanine between walls

1. Fastening from two (three) sides.
2. The ability to increase depth without increasing torque. Simply put, the additional weight of the structure does not pull the mount off the wall.
3. It is necessary to decorate only two planes of the mezzanine - the front and the bottom.

Output: if the mezzanine is located in a niche between three walls, then the work on its manufacture is reduced to the arrangement of shelves and hanging the door.

How to make a stationary mezzanine with your own hands

A few general tips on how to make a mezzanine with your own hands before moving on to practice.

1. The bottom of the product should be at least 2 m above the floor, for the mezzanine - the space remaining above.
2. When placed over a door, align the bottom of the shelf at the top of the doors. This option is the most practical and looks aesthetically pleasing.
3. Do not leave space between the top of the structure and the ceiling. This dead zone will only collect dust.
4. The mezzanine, located close to the light source, will greatly shade the room.

There are two reliable ways of attaching the mezzanine.

In a bar of the required length, we drill holes with a step of 25 cm.According to the level, we draw a horizontal line on the wall and apply the bar. Through the holes we outline the attachment points on the wall. We drill holes 60 mm deep, insert plastic plugs - dowels. We attach the rail and fasten it with self-tapping screws. We perform a similar operation on the opposite wall. (fig. 1)

Fastening the mezzanine to a metal profile

Along the perimeter of the bottom of the mezzanine, we fix the 28 × 27 mm PN ceiling profile and connect it with crossbars from the 60 × 27 mm PP profile. From the bottom, we hem the frame with a sheet of drywall (you can learn more about working with drywall → here). On top, we carry out the flooring of OSB or thick plywood, hard enough so that the shelf does not sag under the weight of things (Fig. 2).

With a significant span of the mezzanine inside, we arrange additional fastening to the ceiling using a suspension. The mezzanine doors are made hinged or sliding. They can be decorated with veneer, self-adhesive film, paper, or simply painted with enamel paint.

Having assembled the shelf itself, the doors of the required size can be ordered at a furniture workshop, it will not cost much.

How to make a furniture mezzanine with your own hands

The furniture mezzanine, in fact, is a small →, we have already talked about the device of this type of furniture, you can read the link.

The main requirement for such a mezzanine will be a match in style with existing furniture. Before you start making a mezzanine with your own hands for finished furniture, select a material of identical color and texture. Pick up the fittings.
As the main material, you can use furniture chipboard or OSB, already laminated. Or, using self-adhesive paper, achieve the desired color and pattern. You can fasten the sheets together with ordinary metal furniture corners.

You can go the other way, making a mezzanine with your own hands, obviously in a different style and color. How exactly, your taste will tell. In a small apartment, where you have to save every centimeter of space, a mezzanine can help save a lot of usable space. It is not difficult to make a mezzanine with your own hands, since its design is quite simple and does not require much effort even from novice craftsmen.

Mezzanines are arranged in various places, but most often in corridors, hallways and on balconies. That is, where the low ceiling will not bother anyone. It is important to ensure that the mezzanines fit well into the interior of the room and do not attract attention. Therefore, in most cases, they are made so that they completely merge with the walls.

Do-it-yourself mezzanine installation

Let's look at the process of making a mezzanine in a narrow hallway, above the front door. We choose the option not with opening doors, but with sliding doors - a compartment.

1. First of all, we decide how much the future niche will be. You shouldn't do it on the floor of the corridor. Firstly, low ceilings by themselves compress the space, and the room will seem uncomfortable. Secondly, it is inconvenient to get things out of a deep niche. Then we outline at what distance from the ceiling it will be placed. We draw a horizontal line and fix a bar or profile of the required length on the wall. Expect to be heavy enough, so make everything from reliable materials and fasten tightly.
2. Cut two identical pieces and attach to opposite walls. This is the base for the flooring. How to fix them depends on the material from which the walls of the apartment or house are made.

3. We make the flooring - the mezzanine floor. In our case, it is made of boards, but you can use chipboard or plywood. We lay the boards on bars or a profile and fix them.
4. Along the width of the mezzanine, we cut a plastic profile with grooves, in which the doors will then be attached. We need two such segments.
5. Using a perforator, we fix these profiles on the ceiling, one by one. They should fit snugly together.
6. Now you need to make the doors. We cut them out of laminate or chipboard. In the second case, they need to be painted and, on one side, covered with a self-adhesive film of the desired color. On top, if you wish, we glue plastic slats for beauty. Also, if you wish, you can drill holes and screw the handle into one of the doors.
7. We insert the finished doors into the grooves of the profile and check how easily they move in them.
8. Along the contour of the niche we make a frame of plastic slats, also matching them to the color of the hallway and the doors themselves. It will cover bars and other parts that are not intended for prying eyes.
9. Now you need to finish the bottom of the structure, depending on how the ceiling of the hallway is finished.
Everything, our mezzanine is ready, you can load it with things.
As you can see, it is not difficult to make mezzanines with your own hands, and although there are not many opportunities for imagination, but with some effort this design can carry not only a useful function, but also become an interesting interior detail.

Mezzanines - wide top shelves used as storage in apartments. However, this term also denotes the upper mezzanine, located in the volume of the main floor. In the works of French writers of the eighteenth century, there are often references to the fact that mezzanines were assigned to accommodate servants.

  1. The upper part of the room, which is divided into two small floors.
  2. A shelf located under the ceiling of the room.

Purpose - for storing things

The mezzanine can be used as a storage room. However, before you start installing it, in order to place various things, it is necessary to calculate the exact structures. To make a mezzanine with your own hands, you need to calculate how much load the base can withstand.

This will ensure the safety of use. cabinet with a mezzanine. You need to pay attention to how the shelf will close. Doors for mezzanines are sold in various shapes, so you can choose the option that will suit more style than others.

To make a mezzanine with your own hands, it is important to take care of how it will be ventilated or illuminated. To ventilate things naturally, you can make small holes in the walls. This will open up access to oxygen and keep it circulating.

The cabinet with a mezzanine must be properly lit. Simple lamps or the lamp installed in the room will not be enough to navigate. Usually a mezzanine is installed in the corridor or hallway, which is poorly lit. Experts recommend:

  • Install a shade to protect the light source. This will avoid mechanical damage to the chandelier when placing things;
  • The lamp or lamp itself is best placed closer to the shelf.

Attention! The mezzanine above the door is a wall cabinet. Its main function is to fill the free area from the ceiling to the opening.

Doors for mezzanines can be designed as a curtain. This method is rarely used, since such a design will not look aesthetically pleasing. The situation is different if the cabinet door and the curtains in the room are made of the same material.

Model classification

As for the placement of mezzanines, they can be of two types (they are made to order):

  1. Rectangular.
  2. Corner.

Depending on the number of doors, two types are distinguished (photos of suitable models here can be seen and chosen by everyone):

  1. One-sided.
  2. Bilateral.

According to experts, two-sided models (they can be seen in the photo) are the most convenient to use. When arranging a mezzanine, you need to do everything necessary to make it look beautiful and be able to complement the design of the room. This is especially true for rooms with low ceilings. In them, the mezzanines will be located low, so they will attract the surrounding attention. If you place an order, you must indicate the height of the ceilings in the room.

Attention! Mezzanines should be located at a specified height, varying from 1.9-2 m from the floor surface, so as not to interfere with the passage.

Make mezzanine yourself

How to make a mezzanine if you don't want to place an order? To make mezzanines yourself, you can use the following instructions:

  • Attach a 3 × 5 cm thick rail to the wall.
  • For decking, you can use a variety of planks installed in a tight-fitting side.
  • It is advised to paint the flooring in dark colors.

The second method of making a mezzanine is much simpler. For work, you will need a plywood board that can fill the entire area of the opening. To prevent the mezzanine from moving from its place, it is recommended to screw it with screws from the bottom of it. To give the structure a more attractive look, the grooves are putty.

And the final way to make a mezzanine involves using a wooden frame. A slab placed on the frame will be used as a base. On the underside, it is sheathed with a slab pre-lined with veneer. Experts advise to make the coating in a light shade, and the bottom plate in a dark shade.

Advice! To ensure the functionality of the structure, it is recommended to delimit the internal area with small partitions. If you are custom-made mezzanines, then mention this.

Closet with a mezzanine can be installed in the hallway, hall or living room. It can accommodate various things - from winter clothes to jars of pickles. Anyone can view a photo of such a cabinet right now, and then place an order.
