How can you cover the pipe on the roof. How and how to seal the gap between the pipe and the roof - different options for different materials. Roof made of profiled sheet

The popularity of fireplaces and stoves in the arrangement of country houses did not decline after the appearance of more modern heating devices that run on natural gas or electricity. Chimneys are used to remove combustion products from furnace equipment: their passage through the roof should be as tight as possible.

What happens with insufficient sealing

The section where the chimney exits through the roofing surface is called a passage node, or simply a penetration. It is installed in the wall or on the roof of a building: it is the second installation method that is most popular. At the same time, it is much more difficult to carry out high-quality waterproofing of such a penetration.

All the mistakes made in sealing the pipe on the roof can provoke the following consequences:

  • Leaks... According to statistics, the cause of most roof leaks is precisely the poor-quality waterproofing of the junction areas of the chimney and roofing material.
  • Rotting truss structure... Moisture that has got under the roof through a poorly designed passage assembly becomes the cause of decay and deformation of the wooden truss structure.
  • Reduced thrust... Due to the poor tightness of the contact area between the roofing and the chimney, condensation begins to form on the surface of the chimney. As a result, the chimney cools down and reduces internal draft.

In order to eliminate all of the above problems, it is necessary to carefully observe the technology of sealing the penetration of the chimney. The set of almost all roofing materials includes special additional elements or elastic covers that allow for high-quality insulation of the specified area.

Purpose of waterproofing pipes on the roof

The waterproofing of the chimney is usually carried out upon completion of the roofing work, which provokes negligence in this procedure by some craftsmen. This state of affairs is a serious mistake, the consequences of which can be very dire.

Chimney sealing tasks:

  1. Increasing the safety of oven equipment... Chimneys serving solid fuel stoves are usually very hot. This imposes an additional responsibility on the insulation of its surface from the wooden roof structure.
  2. Improving energy efficiency... If you carry out high-quality insulation of the seams, thereby you can significantly reduce heat loss. As a result, significant savings in fuel materials will be achieved.
  3. Condensation protection of the pipe... A well-insulated chimney is able to maintain a stable wall temperature. This makes it possible to reduce the amount of condensate formed by an order of magnitude.

What should be the waterproofing

Not so long ago, the chimney outlet was waterproofed with scrap materials. At present, a significant number of materials and devices are produced for these purposes, allowing to solve the problem of how to close up the gap between the pipe and the roof.

Waterproofing for penetration must have the following qualities:

  • Persistent moisture transfer... Since the specified area is located on the surface of the roof, this assumes constant exposure to atmospheric precipitation. Therefore, it is very important that the insulating material is able to resist moisture and corrosion for a long time.
  • Heat resistance... The surface of the chimney can heat up to +600 degrees, so the waterproofing must cope well with significant temperature fluctuations. Continuous exposure to the sun means that the roof chimney seal has good UV resistance.
  • Wear resistance... As a rule, any roofing material is designed to operate for at least 15-20 years. It is desirable that additional elements have a similar length of service.
  • Roof compatibility... Before sealing a pipe on a roof, it is important to choose the most suitable option. The selection of material for the design of the chimney exit point is carried out taking into account the type of roofing material. A roof made of corrugated board or metal tiles must be equipped with galvanized additional elements. Ceramic products are used on tiled roofs, and bituminous ones on soft ones.

Do not waterproof the pipe with household silicone sealant, petroleum bitumen, or cement. When selecting insulation, the heating temperature of the pipe and the type of roofing material must be taken into account.

What are the means for sealing - the better to seal the gap

Thanks to the ready-made chimney pass-through units, roofing work is greatly simplified. These tasks can be performed even by people without relevant experience.

The main types of means for sealing penetrations:

  1. Metal collar for roof pipe... The most popular type of chimney insulation. Most often, square or rectangular pipes are equipped in this way. Such an apron consists of a set of metal corners that are fixed to the roof slopes and the outer walls of the chimney. This option is usually used on roofs made of corrugated board, metal or slate.
  2. Rubber earbuds... These are rubber or latex seals with a funnel-shaped design. This form of products is convenient for insulating chimneys with a circular cross-section. They are pulled onto the pipe, fixing them to the battens through the roofing. To achieve a snug fit of the rubber liner to the surface of the chimney, it is important to correctly select its diameter.
  3. Membranes... With the help of strip diffuse membranes, it is convenient to glue the perimeter of the chimney. Thus, you can design pipes of round and rectangular cross-section. In fairness, it must be said that this type of termination is not very aesthetic.

In order to achieve a reliable waterproofing for penetration, it is recommended to use multi-layer structures, where a rubber seal, an internal apron and an external decorative edging are combined.

With all the efforts of roofers to lay the roofing material closer to the pipe, it still adjoins it loosely, with gaps. If they are not repaired, then water through such joints will seep under the roof. Therefore, all gaps between the roof and the chimney perimeter must be repaired.

Brick Chimney Roof with Rigid Metal Roof

How to seal the roof around the pipe on the roof made of metal, seam roofing or corrugated board?

Consider a method of embedding for a brick pipe of rectangular section.

  • The traditional method of embedding involves the installation of an apron around the pipe of four special L-shaped elements made of galvanized steel. The finished fittings are applied to the pipe and with a construction marker directly on its walls they mark where the grooves will pass under the upper limbs of the junctions.
  • To form grooves, they pass along the marked lines with a cutting machine with a disc over the stone. The installation of the apron begins with the installation of the lower abutment, while winding its upper limb directly into the groove.
  • Likewise, with an overlap: side and top abutments are installed. In this case, the lower horizontal parts of the abutments are attached to the crate with self-tapping screws.
  • The grooves on the pipe are sealed with silicone sealant.
  • Then they arrange the so-called. "Tie" made of waterproofing material, installed directly on the lower abutment and so that moisture drains into the drainage elements of the roof.
  • Roofing material is mounted on top of the abutments and "tie".

Round roof tube with rigid metal roof

  1. Many oven manufacturers produce round multilayer chimneys. To seal such a chimney, there are ready-made aprons-caps on the roof, which are a metal sheet with an opening closed by a cap in the form of an oblique (relative to the plane of the sheet) truncated cone. The sheet is attached to the crate, the pipe is passed through the hood. The top of the hood is pressed against the pipe with a steel clamp with a heat-resistant gasket.
  2. In addition to the rigid metal cap aprons, there is also a special flexible pipe fitting on the market called Master Flush. It is a flexible device that allows you to quickly and efficiently seal pipes on the roof. Its area of application is sealing not only chimneys, but also various other additional elements of roofs, such as: antennas, ventilation pipes, lamps.

Outwardly, Master Flash looks like a stepped pyramid. The materials for its production are silicone or rubber, the base is made of aluminum. It should be remembered that the operating temperature range of the rubber Master Flash is - 50 ° С - (+ 130 ° С). He will tell you more about the chimney.

The silicone model works in the temperature range - 70 ° C - (+ 250 ° C) and can be used on any roof and in any climate.

The described material is easy to install and has a long service life.

  • A hole with a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the pipe should be cut into its base.
  • Pull the Master Flush onto the pipe, give it the correct shape, put a gasket under the base.
  • Under the base, apply a layer of special sealant along its edge, and attach it to the roof made of corrugated board with special screws.
  • If the joints between the roof and the pipe do leak, then it is good to seal them up with aluminum or copper self-adhesive tape with an adhesive layer based on bitumen modified with polymers and covered with a protective film. Such a layer does not need to be preheated; it adheres well to wood, metal, plastic, cement screed and other materials. Previously, the place where the tape will be attached is cleaned, and after removing the protective film, it itself is strongly pressed against the surface. It can be used to glue the attachment points of the apron-cap to the roof lathing.

Round roof tube with natural tile roof

On such a roof around the pipe, the so-called. "Otter" from a cement-sand mortar in the following sequence:

  • In the gap between the pipe and the tiles, galvanized "collars" are laid.
  • A cement-sand mortar is placed in the prepared gap, forming a collar around the pipe protruding above the roof. The collar should fit tightly with the lower expanded part of the tile, and with the upper one - with the pipe.
  • For drainage on the collar from the side of the ridge, a ledge is formed having two inclined planes.

This work must be done with the utmost care to prevent cracking.

Round pipe on slate

When the pipe is located close to the ridge, it is closed in the following sequence:

  • One of the steel sheets, with which the ridge is formed, is lowered down to the overlap of the pipe section.
  • A round cut is made in the sheet for the pipe with a flanging of its edge two centimeters up.
  • An asbestos-cement ring is put on the pipe.
  • To fix the ring along the height of the pipe, insert a pin into its side hole.
  • The ring is set parallel to the ramp using a wedge.
  • The edges of the cut in the steel sheet are led inside the ring.
  • The joint is covered with a mixture of cement and fluffed asbestos (1: 2).

In order for the pipe and slate to join hermetically, do the following:

  1. A cardboard cylinder wrapped in plastic wrap is inserted into the gap between the slate and the pipe.
  2. A clay or plasticine border is formed on a steel sheet. The distance between the flange and the cardboard cylinder should not be more than 10 mm.
  3. The resulting gap is filled with an asbestos-cement mixture.
  4. After the mixture has hardened, the cylinder with the restrictive rim is removed;
  5. An asbestos ring is put on the pipe (see above).

Pipe sealing on a soft roof

Around brick pipes on a soft roof, cutting is performed in the form of an apron from ready-made abutments made of soft roofing material (for example, ondulin). The abutments are attached to the lathing with nails, and to the walls of the pipe with Wacaflex or Onduflesh-super roofing tape. The joints of the abutments with the crate are also glued with the same tape.

Round pipes on a soft rabbit are sealed with ready-made aprons-caps. The joints of the base sheets of the aprons with the roof are also glued with roofing tapes.

As you can see, there are quite a few ways to seal the pipe on the roof. They have one thing in common: all these works must be done with high quality. This is the only way to obtain reliable roof leakage protection.

Exiting a pipe or ventilation shaft through the roof involves making a hole in it. During the passage of the pipe, a gap always remains here, which, even at its lowest value, will allow moisture to pass through. Today we will consider how to achieve perfect tightness at the junctions of the pipe to the roof and how to seal the gap between the pipe and the roof.

Consequences of poor sealing of joints

When removing the chimney, a hole of slightly larger diameter is always made in the roof than the chimney itself. This is due to the need for a convenient and trouble-free installation of the pipe and safety rules. If the pipe gets very hot and the roofing cake is formed from flammable materials, then the gap between the pipe and the roof reaches 15 cm.

Poorly sealed joints are fraught with a number of unpleasant consequences:

  • Reducing the operating time of the rafter system. Wood reacts poorly to moisture, rotts or is affected by mold. All this reduces the rigidity of the rafter frame and leads to its destruction;
  • Destruction of roofing material. Most of the roofing materials are perfectly protected from moisture from the outside, but not inside. Water in the roofing cake will lead to destruction of the roof and its rapid deterioration;
  • The destruction of the insulation. Thermal insulation materials are usually particularly sensitive to high humidity. In such conditions, they lose their insulating properties and begin to collapse;
  • High humidity in the under-roof space. Humid air can cause high humidity in the attic itself. It will become unpleasant to be there and the interior decoration of the room will deteriorate.

Competent and thorough sealing of the gap is a guarantee of a long and reliable service of the roof and the whole house. Let's take a closer look at how to close the gap between the pipe and the roof on various types of roofs.

Principles of sealing the gap between the chimney and the roof

Closing the gaps is carried out using a number of materials at hand, which can be schematically divided into two categories:

  1. Elements that cover the gap between the roof and the pipe. These are various aprons, collars, which are made of galvanized steel, rubber or silicone. They can have a different appearance and technical characteristics, be home-made or factory-made. Their main purpose is the primary rough closing of the gap between the roof and the chimney;
  2. Various sealants, that is, materials that fill the remaining gaps. These include cement mixes, sealants. Among modern generations there are adhesive tapes that are convenient and easy to use.

For different types of roofs, the ratio and choice of these materials will be different. Let's consider this issue in more detail.

Tile roof

On tiled roofs, it is more convenient to use a solution of cement and sand. For this type of roof, this is the best and most convenient solution for sealing gaps.

Let's imagine step by step how to seal a pipe on a tile roof:

  • A special collar is prepared from galvanized steel, which forms a place for pouring the solution;
  • When filling the gap with a cement-sand mixture, it is important to ensure that it fills all the niches near the roof and the pipe itself;
  • An inclined surface is created to drain rainwater.

Slate roof

How to fix a pipe on a slate roof? The answer is simple: an asbestos-cement mixture.

The order of work will be as follows:

  • A hole in the form of a circle is made in a sheet of steel and pushed onto the chimney;
  • A solution of asbestos and cement is created in proportions of 2: 1;
  • The gap between the chimney and the sheet is filled with a diluted asbestos-cement mixture;
  • The mixture fills the gap between the chimney and the roof. For convenience, you will need a limiter, which can be made from a board or cardboard.

Roofing made of soft tiles

Cutting is done on roofs made of shingles. The gap must be closed with a special apron element. It is framed by flexible rubber-based Vacaflex adhesive tape. The tape is put on the chimney and the base and carefully glued due to its own adhesive layer. Further, the cutting is pressed by the pipe case and all the gaps are filled with bituminous mastic.

If the gaps between the chimney and the bituminous tiles are large enough in size, then initially they are filled with tow or rope, which are impregnated with bitumen or oil paint.

Also, the filling of the gaps can be carried out with a cement-sand mortar.

Roof made of profiled sheet

The question of how to close the gap between the pipe and the roof made of corrugated board is easily solved with the help of ready-made pipe cuts, which allow you to quickly and quality fill up all the gaps. Finished pipe cuts represent the connection of the apron and the cap in a single piece. They are made from a variety of materials and are designed for a wide range of temperature fluctuations.

Working with this element looks like this:

  • A hole is made in the cap, the diameter is smaller than the diameter of the output pipe;
  • Using a soapy solution, the element is pulled over the pipe;
  • A gasket is placed in the base of the cap;
  • All joints are filled with a heat-resistant silicone-based sealant;
  • The base is fixed to the roof with screws.

Repair of leaking piping

It often happens that the junction of the chimney and the roof begins to leak water. This situation can be quickly and easily remedied with aluminum-reinforced adhesive tape. Its use is convenient because it does not require special training. It is applied to the cleaned surface in the place where moisture is likely to pass through and adheres thanks to its own adhesive layer.

Let's sum up

Sealing the gaps between the pipe and the roof is a simple, but responsible matter. Even a novice builder can handle it. To carry out these works, it is necessary to take into account correctly:

  • Gap size;
  • Type of roofing material;
  • The shape of the pipe.

The modern market offers a wide selection of not only various sealants, but also ready-made cuts for organizing a high-quality abutment of the pipe and roof. We advise you to pay attention to them when arranging a chimney with your own hands.

No matter how hard the roofers try to lay the roofing material as tightly as possible to the pipe, leaks form in these places. If you leave them unsealed, then water will seep through them into the under-roof space. Therefore, all gaps in the places where the roof adjoins pipes and various protrusions must be closed.

How to seal the joint between the pipe and the roof

There are several ways to seal gaps, depending on the type of roofing material and the size of the gap.

1. Small gaps can be closed with silicone sealant. You just need to choose a brand that can be operated at high temperatures. This is especially important when sealing the gap around the chimney.

2. On tiled roof a "otter" of cement-sand mortar is arranged around the pipe:

  • the gap between the pipe and the roof is laid out with galvanized steel collars;
  • fill the prepared gap with a cement-sand mortar so that around the pipe it forms a collar protruding above the level of the roof. The lower widened part of the collar should fit snugly against the tile, and the upper part should fit the pipe precisely around the entire perimeter;
  • to drain water on the collar on the ridge side, a ledge with two inclined planes is formed.

This work must be done with great care, otherwise the structure will crack over time and leak.

Sealing the gap between the round pipe and the slate

If the pipe passes next to the ridge, then the gap is closed quite simply:

  • during the design of the ridge with a steel sheet, we lower one of them to the middle of the pipe diameter;
  • cut a hole in the sheet for the pipe and flange two centimeters high (upward);
  • we put on a ring made of sheet asbestos cement on the pipe;
  • to fix the upper part of the ring, insert a pin into the side hole in the pipe;
  • the lower part of the ring with a wedge is set in a position parallel to the ramp;
  • We cover the joint with a solution prepared from a mixture of cement and fluffed asbestos (1: 2).

This method perfectly protects the roof from rain, but snow gets into the gap between the slate and the pipe.

To make the joint between the pipe and the slate airtight, you need to do the following:

  • insert a cardboard cylinder wrapped from the outside with plastic wrap into the gap between the pipe and the slate;
  • on the sheet to form a restrictive side of a plastic material (clay or plasticine). The distance from the board to the cardboard cylinder should not exceed 10 mm;
  • fill the resulting gap with asbestos-cement mortar;
  • as soon as the solution hardens, remove the cylinder and the restrictive side;
  • fix the asbestos ring on the pipe (see above).

Sealing the gap between the pipe and the soft (bitumen) roof

Around the pipes when installing a soft roof, cutting is performed (apron, framing with Wacaflex, etc.). The grooves are pressed with a pipe case, the diameter of which exceeds the diameter of the vent pipe. The gap between the pipe and the case is filled with bitumen mastic.

Note: "Wacaflex" is a roofing tape, the purpose of which is to seal cracks at the junctions of the roof to pipes and walls. It is a self-adhesive rubber-based tape. The tape is reinforced with an aluminum mesh. Elastic, easily takes any shape.

Before pouring, wide slots are coined with a rope or linen fleece soaked in oil paint. After that, the gap is poured with mastic and coated on top with a cement-sandy (greasy) solution.

As you can see. There are many ways to close the gap between the pipe and the roof. One thing unites them: all work must be done with high quality. Only in this way will you achieve reliable protection of the roof from moisture.

A roof made of corrugated board is a good solution for protecting a building from atmospheric influences for many decades to come. This economical and reliable material is used in the construction of roofs in individual, multi-apartment housing construction, in the construction and repair of production areas or other facilities.

Correct sealing of the chimney on the roof made of corrugated board is a guarantee of the safety of the entire structure. Waterproofing of the pipe and roof joint is carried out both at the stage of roof installation and during the repair (replacement) of the roofing or chimney.

Installation of a pipe of any configuration involves a fire gap between the roofing cake and the chimney. The result is an opening around the outer perimeter of the chimney, into which atmospheric moisture can freely penetrate. If this gap is not sealed tightly, then the water will quickly begin to destroy the elements of the roof, with which it comes into direct contact.

The following negative consequences of depressurization of the roof made of corrugated board in the area of the chimney are possible:

  • Rotting wooden structural elements of the roof.
  • Structural destruction of synthetic materials for the insulation of the roofing cake. As a result, thermal insulation loses its effectiveness, and the processes of destruction of the structure are increasing.
  • Corrosion of corrugated board from the joint edge. In the place where the corrugated board was cut, its protective layers become vulnerable to external influences. The destruction of the protection will provoke the process of rusting of the iron base.

Note! Sealing a chimney on a roof made of corrugated board is not difficult and can be done using ready-made devices. Special aprons from the manufacturer of roofing sheeting are reliable in operation and do not spoil the aesthetics of the structure.

Methods for sealing pipes of various configurations

The method of sealing the gap between the chimney and the roof depends not only on the capabilities and preferences of the master, but also on the size of the hole, on the shape of the pipe, and on the roofing material.
