In the current market, saturated with varieties of heating devices from many manufacturers, it is sometimes very difficult for an ordinary homeowner who has decided to replace batteries to find suitable products for their home. Having entered a large heating equipment store, it seems that there are countless types of heating batteries. In fact, there are only five of them:

  • cast iron products;
  • steel heaters;
  • aluminum radiators;
  • bimetallic batteries;
  • electrical heating devices.

All these types of heating radiators have different technical characteristics, as well as their own advantages and disadvantages that determine the scope of their application. Let's take a closer look at each of them, and clearly define which type of device is better to put.

Cast iron radiators

This type of water heaters, well known to us from childhood, is used to this day, despite the emergence of many modern competitors, whose technical characteristics are much better. This is due to several reasons, for example, the high corrosion resistance of cast iron and the ability to work in systems with high pressure of the coolant. In addition, a tribute to tradition is important for many people and, despite any explanations, they are still convinced that cast iron batteries are the best.

This opinion is well founded, since these devices are very reliable and durable, according to these criteria, they are unmatched, since they serve from 30 to 50 years. In addition, cast iron heaters retain heat for a long time, having great massiveness and inertia. This advantage is also a disadvantage: cast-iron batteries take a long time to warm up and cool down just as long, so it is very difficult to organize automatic climate control in the room where such devices are installed.

If earlier the appearance of cast-iron batteries left much to be desired, now many companies offer cast-iron heating radiators with various powder colors or with decorative casting.

True, this improvement brought traditionally cheap heaters out of the budget category, since such products are much more expensive. The rest of their shortcomings are well known: high weight and water capacity, although recently they have been reduced to a minimum.

The good thing about cast iron batteries is that they can be installed everywhere: in an apartment, house, dacha. But it is best to use them for heating a private house, where a gravity system is organized. It itself is inertial and has a large volume of coolant flowing at a low speed. This is exactly what a massive cast iron appliance needs.

Steel batteries

This type of heater is divided into two types

  • panel;
  • tubular.

Panel radiators are good radiators for a private house, where the working pressure of the coolant does not exceed 3 Bar. The fact is that their design and manufacturing technology provides for operation in a system with a maximum pressure of up to 15 Bar. This is often not enough in a district heating environment, especially in high-rise buildings.

The panels have good heat dissipation, relatively low weight and size, and also have an aesthetic appearance. There are also steel radiators with bottom connection, which makes it possible to install them in apartments with individual heating and piping hidden in the floor.

In addition, among all heating devices, steel panels have the lowest cost, so they often remain the only acceptable option. Among the disadvantages are sensitivity to corrosion and a relatively short service life (up to 15 years).

When you need to put a steel radiator in a central heating system, it is better to choose a tubular type device with thick massive walls that can withstand high pressure and water hammer. Therefore, such batteries can be installed anywhere, they are reliable and durable.

Another thing is that the cost of tubular devices is quite high, while there are disadvantages similar to cast iron batteries: inertia, large capacity and considerable weight. Because of this, they are rarely installed in country houses and other buildings with an individual heating system, preferring the same heaters made of cast iron or aluminum.

Aluminum radiators

One of the most popular heating devices - sectional aluminum radiators - are distinguished by the best degree of heat transfer, quick heating and cooling, low weight and excellent appearance.

All these advantages are realized thanks to the body of the device, made of aluminum alloy. Vertical channels with a cross-section close to circular are made in it, and outside these channels are equipped with many ribs, intensively transmitting the energy of the coolant to the air in the room. In turn, the flat surfaces of the aluminum battery emit an even flow of radiant heat. The physical properties of aluminum make it possible to organize automatic regulation of the heating power, since inertia in this case is practically absent. In fact, bimetallic batteries are the same aluminum products, inside which there is a welded frame made of thick-walled steel pipes. As a result of such modernization, the disadvantages associated with the quality of the coolant and its pressure were successfully eliminated.

At the same time, heaters have a slightly lower heat transfer than purely aluminum ones, but much higher than that of steel or cast iron appliances. Therefore, in the case of centralized heat supply systems for heating, it is better to install bimetal radiators, they will serve for a long time and reliably, while giving off heat much more intensively than other types of devices. But it should be said that the cost of bimetallic batteries is significantly higher than that of aluminum ones.

  • Type 10 consists of only one panel;

  • Due to the low massiveness of the steel sheet, the panel warms up almost immediately after starting the heating. The negative features of panels include the following factors:

  • Metal panels do not have an anti-corrosion coating on their inner surface, which is in direct contact with the coolant, which can lead to rather rapid rusting, leaks, and failure. This is especially typical for central systems, where the coolant is drained in the summer, opening up "ample opportunities" for corrosion processes. Tubular batteries

Tubular steel batteries consist of type-setting sections that are welded together. The efficiency of this design will be at the proper level if the required number of sections is installed in the battery, with its total thermal power corresponding to the area of ​​the room.


Tubular radiators can have a very wide variety of different design solutions, and this is one of those criteria that directly affect the choice of this particular type of battery. In addition, tubular batteries can be equipped with a special towel rail, which is very convenient, for example, for a kitchen, or a top panel that can serve as a seat or shelf for drying shoes.

They are produced in different sizes, the height varies from 200 to 2000 mm, and the thickness, as a rule, from 100 to 250 mm. The ordered length can be any, depending on the need for heating.

These elements of the heating system can withstand pressure from 8 to 15 atmospheres. To avoid damage to batteries during water hammer, if they are installed in a central heating system, they, like panel ones, will require the installation of a reducer.

The wall thickness of steel tubular radiators is only 1 ÷ 1.5 mm, so they warm up very quickly and give off heat to the room. But the same factor can be attributed to design flaws, since thin steel is easily susceptible to mechanical damage.

Unlike the panel type, the tubes of these batteries have an inner coating with polymer protective films, which keep them from the influence of the aggressive medium of the coolant, and as a result, from the occurrence of foci of corrosion, which significantly prolongs their service life.


The advantages of tubular steel batteries include a variety of design solutions in shape and color, supplying radiators with additional elements, and an original neat appearance.

There are only two serious disadvantages of this type of batteries, but they can have a much more significant effect on the heating system of a house than the already mentioned advantages:

  • Low heat dissipation, which will lead to high energy costs. The batteries heat up quickly, but they also cool down quickly, so the boiler will turn off for a very short time. The absence of an additional heat exchanger, except for the surface of the pipes themselves, makes the area of ​​active heat transfer very small. This ultimately suggests that it is unprofitable to install tubular batteries in an autonomous heating system.
  • At the same time, welded joints can be attributed to the weak point of such batteries - there have been cases of leaks on them after water hammer. The conclusion suggests itself quite the opposite - it is possible to install tubular batteries without a gearbox only in a system with autonomous heating.

In short, there are a lot of contradictions, and you need to think very well before purchasing such heating batteries.

Cast iron radiators

Although today a large number of batteries are produced from modern materials, the cast-iron elements of the heating system have not been forgotten either. They can be found in stores in a transformed form, decorated to match modern interiors or strict "classics". In some cases, such radiators even play the role of a decorative element and are able to set the tone for the entire design of the room.


In addition, modern cast iron batteries do not require periodic painting, as was the case with the old "Soviet" models. They go on sale with a treated and painted surface, which you will only have to occasionally wipe or dust off from it.

Despite the emergence of new battery options, cast iron continues to be popular and because of its excellent heat capacity- the property to keep warm for a long time. Aluminum batteries

Aluminum batteries are suitable only for installation in an autonomous heating system, since they are quite demanding on the quality of the coolant. This type of radiator is quite popular among the owners of private houses, due to its affordable price, good performance and modern exterior design.

This one is designed for a pressure in the system of up to 15 atmospheres, a coolant temperature of 90 ÷ 100 degrees, and the heat transfer of a section can reach 200 ÷ 210 W. In this case, the capacity of each of the radiator sections is only 450 ml, and the weight is 1.0 ÷ 1.5 kg. The individual sections are held together to form a single battery by means of a threaded axial connection.

The standard distances between the upper and lower axles are 200, 350 or 500 mm, but it happens that non-standard options are made with a center distance of 800 or even more millimeters.


Aluminum radiators, like all other heating devices, have their own advantages and disadvantages.

TO advantages their following qualities can be attributed:

- high level of heat transfer;

- low weight;

- relative ease of installation;

- convenient and wide range of sizes;

- neat, aesthetic appearance;

- as a rule - equipped with a thermostat, which allows you to set the desired temperature regime.

From disadvantages the following is worth mentioning:

- the possible risk of gas formation, which can provoke " airing " and blockage of the heating circuit;

- the possibility of leakage at the connections of individual sections;

- the main concentration of heat on the edges of the elements.

Some of the problems that can arise with aluminum batteries can be avoided. For example, in order for its possible gassing to paralyze the operation of the system, it is necessary to cut into a common autonomous circuit or install an air vent on each battery. And in the case of an autonomous system, it is generally better to use one that is well adapted to aluminum (this is described in detail in the corresponding publication of the portal).

The sections of aluminum batteries are made from an aluminum alloy using silicon additives, but different models may also differ in the way they are manufacturing - casting and extrusion.

  • The first method involves the manufacture of each section separately, by pouring the alloy into special molds under high pressure. Silicon, present in the alloy, gives special strength to the walls of the radiators, and the manufacturing method fully guarantees the tightness of the container.

Batteries manufactured by this method are capable of withstanding a system operating pressure of up to 16 atmospheres. During test activities, the coolant is supplied to this type of battery under a pressure of 25 atmospheres, that is, giving the characteristics of its products, the manufacturer gives a one and a half margin of safety.

Using this technology, sections of various shapes are made, but those that have a flat, smooth outer surface are still traditional - it is optimal for better heat transfer.

  • Another method of making sections is the extrusion method. The melt using this technology is pushed through the forming nozzles - the desired billet profile is obtained. This is followed by cutting the profile into separate parts.

Then the finished sections are assembled into a single structure. Batteries manufactured in this way have a lower cost, but during operation they cannot be increased or made smaller - the design is non-separable. The quality of such radiators is also lower, since the joints of the sections (on seals or even on special glue) under an unfavorable set of circumstances can leak and cannot be repaired.

Aluminum batteries with anodic oxidation

There is another type of aluminum battery. They are made from metal with a high degree of purification, and still undergo anodic oxidation stage - therefore, the term "aluminum anodized" is often found. With such a special treatment, aluminum somewhat changes its structure, and if ordinary aluminum radiators are susceptible to oxygen corrosion, then anodized sections can withstand such influence with dignity. In such designs, the batteries are assembled using couplings that are attached to the outside of the sections.


Anodized sections for radiators are made by casting, and outwardly they almost do not differ from ordinary aluminum batteries. Therefore, when purchasing them in a store, you must carefully study the passport, which should be attached to such products.

The inner surfaces of this type of radiator are absolutely smooth, so there are no obstacles to the circulation of the coolant. Their upper working pressure limit is much higher than that of conventional aluminum ones, ranging from 45 to 75 atmospheres.

Naturally, due to their outstanding technical characteristics, the cost is also significantly higher, but nevertheless, in order for aluminum batteries to last as long as possible, it is worth choosing radiators of just such a variety.

Bimetallic batteries

In terms of reliability, bimetallic radiators are perhaps in second place after cast-iron ones. They are produced according to a combined principle, from two metal alloys - the inner part is made of stainless steel alloy, and the outer part is made of aluminum, covered with a layer of enamel.


Bimetallic batteries also consist of sections that are connected by means of a threaded connection. At the same time, their exceptional reliability is based on the fact that the outer aluminum casing does not come into contact with the coolant in any way, but serves only as an effective heat exchanger (due to the highest thermal conductivity of this metal) and somewhat of a decorative element. And water or antifreeze circulates through channels made of steel alloy, which is more resistant to baric loads and oxygen corrosion. Due to this, such batteries can easily withstand pressure surges up to 35 ÷ 40 atmospheres.

These qualities of bimetallic batteries allow, without any restrictions, to install them both in the central heating system of high-rise buildings, and in an autonomous one - in a private house. The only thing, in the second case, it will be desirable for them to create the necessary pressure, otherwise, they will not function at full strength, losing a number of their advantages. This means that natural circulation will not work here, and it is necessary to install a circulation pump in an autonomous system.


Bimetallic batteries are quite expensive - their price, in any case, is much higher than that of steel or ordinary aluminum ones, but this is fully justified by their high reliability and long service life. In fact, the high cost can be called the only drawback, while they have much more advantages:

  • The high thermal conductivity of the outer aluminum "shell" makes it possible to quickly heat up the room.
  • Corrosion resistance already mentioned above.
  • Compactness and aesthetics of appearance, thanks to which the radiators will perfectly fit into any interior style.
  • Bimetallic batteries do not require special maintenance or periodic painting, as they are covered with a two-layer hardened polymer coating.
  • Ability to withstand high temperatures and increased working pressure, thanks to the inner steel body.
  • Relatively small weight, ease of installation, which can be carried out without the help of specialists.

The appearance of bimetallic radiator options is somewhat similar to aluminum batteries, but the price difference is quite significant. When buying, it is sometimes even impossible to distinguish between two adjacent types of radiators, so it is better to purchase them in specialized stores or from trusted suppliers. When choosing, you should not save money, because by buying cheap low-quality products you can doom yourself to another completely unplanned and unwanted repair in two to three years. Tubular structures are more resistant to an aggressive environment of low-quality heat carrier than panel structures, since they usually have an internal protective coating made of polymer materials.
