Types of decorative plaster for interior wall decoration. Decorative plaster for interior wall decoration Decorative plaster on the walls

Many people consider decorative plaster for walls to be a beautiful, but very expensive material for decoration, but in reality this is not so. Naturally, there are very expensive types of such material, but today we will tell you only about the most affordable ones that any person can apply with their own hands.

Structural plaster for walls has several types of texture:

  • bark beetle (imitation of spoiled tree bark);
  • textured stone plaster;
  • flock (with silk effect);
  • with marble chips;
  • Venetian;
  • "Rain" - imitation of raindrops on glass;
  • "rock".

We will talk about the most common for interior decoration and, which is very important, inexpensive types - rain and rock, which are the easiest to do.

Application of decorative plaster "rock"

Stucco with rock texture

This method of application is the easiest, it is perfect for beginners. To create a textured surface, we will not buy a special mixture, but use a conventional plaster or cement based finishing putty. Sheetrock is best suited for this, as it is sold ready-made and does not need to be stirred by hand. It is better not to take too soft and loose types of such material (for example, Vetonit).

Note! Decorative plaster for the walls of the kitchen, toilet and bath is suitable only on a cement basis. It is imperative to apply a thick layer of water-based protective varnish over the paint. In damp areas, such as a bathroom and kitchen work surface, make a protective backsplash out of glass, tiles or panels.

  • Before it is important to prime the walls and it is advisable to apply a layer of putty; this will eliminate gaps and improve coverage.
  • How to apply the putty? We choose a small area on the wall, about 0.5 sq. m., and we collect the putty on the ironer. It is necessary to spread it evenly with a layer of 2-3 mm. The thicker the layer, the rougher the texture will be.
  • After that, evenly distributing the mortar on the wall, you can start creating a structural pattern. clean the trowel from material and place it firmly against the wall on fresh putty. You can do this with either side, but you need to slightly lift the bottom edge of the trowel and at the same time make a downward movement. If you just apply it to the surface, it will stick.
  • This will give you texture by creating slight irregularities in the applied grout. To create a beautiful pattern, movements can be completely different, this is the uniqueness of decorative plaster. The main thing is, when the trowel comes off the mixture, do it smoothly so that there are no traces left. Try it a couple of times and you will see how best to do it. You can apply the structure with herringbone movements, criss-cross, vertically, horizontally, etc. If something doesn't work out, you can make amends and try again.
  • It is also important to clean the trowel after each applied area so that excess mortar does not spoil the texture.
  • After you have done the first section, proceed to the next, but overlap the previous one so that there are no gaps.
  • After application, you need to wait about a day for the walls to dry completely, and then you can proceed to further painting, this is described below.

In the process of work, you may have problems with the sticking of the trowel, traces from it and, as a result, an uneven pattern. If you cannot achieve the same pattern on the entire wall, then it's okay - you are doing an imitation of rocks. The main thing is not to allow sudden changes, otherwise they will be conspicuous.

Plastering with rain

This finishing method is more complicated than the first one, but the result is much more spectacular. See the photo for an example of such a wall.

An example of decorative plaster with rain in the kitchen

Most often, the rain structure is applied at an angle, but this is not essential.

    • Mark the walls to apply the filler at an angle. Draw oblique lines on them, about 3 trowels wide. Lines need to be drawn everywhere at the same angle, it will be difficult to do this at the joints.
    • Next, stick masking tape on each line so that its bottom edge lies on the line.
    • Decorative plaster with rain should be applied starting from the upper corner.
    • We spread the putty with a layer of 3 mm on a strip equal to the size of the trowel and about 1 m long.
The process of applying and smoothing decorative plaster
    • To create the structure of drops, the trowel is lightly pressed against the plaster, stretched along the line in a slightly raised state. We repeat these steps until we have covered the entire strip.
    • At first, the texture will look more like a hedgehog than rain. To fix this, you need to flatten the surface. To do this, clean the trowel from the putty, and lightly pressing it against the mortar, smooth it in one direction. It is important to slightly lift one end of the trowel so that it does not fully engage. The less you press on the tool, the more bumps will remain. Also, the texture depends on the thickness of the layer.
    • The next strip should be applied with a slight overlap over the finished strip. Repeat the above steps until we have covered the entire width of the strip.
    • Since you have glued the tape about three trowels wide, the last strip will overlap slightly on the masking tape. This is necessary specifically so that in this place of the joint the layers creep on top of each other, which significantly improves the final appearance. In addition, the tape helps you maintain the desired angle of inclination of the pattern. When you have finished making one section, simply tear off the tape and continue. You will get a smooth joint that does not need to be smoothed too much.

Advice! If you set out to make one wall, be sure to finish the job. Because taking a break will make a visible difference between the layers, it won't look very nice.

  • When the plaster is dry, sand it with an abrasive mesh or sandpaper to remove any minor irregularities.
The result of the work is a beautiful wall with a plaster structure

You can see the method of applying plaster with rain in more detail in the video:

Painting decorative plaster

    • Be sure to prime the surface before painting. No primer is required for the second and subsequent coats.
    • If you paint the structural plaster with a solid color, the texture will be lost and the result will not be the most successful. The greatest effect is achieved when painting with two colors to highlight the texture. To do this, you can use the dry brush or wash method. Applying paint with a wash emphasizes the hollows of the relief, and with a dry brush, on the contrary, the protrusions.
    • Any method is perfect for a rock, since its texture is quite varied, but for rain, only wash is good.
    • In any case, you will have to apply the original background color, preferably in several layers. To do this, apply the paint with a long-nap roller. But a layer that is too thick will also look bad, as it can hide the small roughness of the texture you created.

Advice! Please note that the paint consumption will be higher than on ordinary smooth walls. To paint the background for a wash, it is better to choose a good waterproof paint, and any paint will go for a dry brush.

  • To highlight the relief with a dry brush, it is better to use light contrasting shades, and to emphasize the wash, on the contrary, darker ones.

Dry brushing

Let's take a look at how the dry brush painting technique works. To do this, you need a wide flat brush, a paint bath, and pieces of cardboard.

  • Pour some paint into a tray and dip the brush into it. Then wipe the tool first on the tray and then on a piece of cardboard to remove excess.
  • Now you can apply paint to the plaster with light movements in different directions. An important point here - the brush must be kept parallel to the wall so that it barely touches its surface, and with chaotic movements it is as if to wipe off the remnants.

The main thing is to avoid abrupt color transitions and brush marks. As a result, you should have a wall like in the photo:

Dry brush painting example

Paint blur

The second method of applying paint with a wash is much more complicated. Its essence is that you apply another, darker layer of paint to the wall. After a while, you wipe it off with a wet cloth, not allowing it to dry completely. As a result, the indentations will appear darker than the bulges.

The technology itself is very simple, but time-consuming and physically demanding. But if you make a bright spot somewhere, you can paint over and wipe it again.

The photo shows an example in which the first background paint layer was white and the wash layer was yellow.

Example of a dark paint wash

To make it easier to wash off the second wash coat, it is better to use a simple, non-moisture-resistant paint. As a rule, it costs less, so you can even save a little.

Varnish application

The final and obligatory stage is coating the paint with varnish. This is for added protection and for a brighter, more saturated color.

  • Any water-based varnish such as Alpina or Tikkurila can be used for this purpose. Be sure to dilute it with water approximately 1: 1 so that it penetrates well into the structure.
  • Apply the varnish with a wide brush in 2 or 3 layers. To avoid smudges on the walls, squeeze the brush against the ribs of the paint bath. Wait a little before applying the next layer, the varnish dries quickly.

In the photo you can see the result of the structural plaster, which was covered in 2 layers with Tikkurila Paneeli Assa varnish. The approximate consumption of varnish is 2.5 liters per 50 sq. m. plaster rain.

Varnished plaster

As you can see, the result is much better. Now you can freely wash such a wall with a rag and not be afraid to damage it. To give the room a finished look, glue the skirting board to the putty during renovation or after painting.

How much does decorative plaster cost

  1. 3 buckets of Sheetrock putty, each costs 1000 rubles. To save money, you can buy a cheaper form and stir the solution yourself with a mixer.
  2. 10 liters of Caparol white paint - 4500 rubles.
  3. 2.5 liters of Finncolor ocher paint - 1000 rubles.
  4. 1 can of Paneeli Assa varnish - 1200 rubles.

Total: 9,700 rubles went to do-it-yourself decorative plastering of the walls, despite the fact that high-quality materials were used, and not the cheapest. It doesn't come out that expensive, but it looks very unusual. This is not wallpapering: not every apartment has such beautiful walls.

Conclusion

As you can see, do-it-yourself textured plaster of the walls allows you to make repairs without much physical effort, even for a girl. The pattern will be unique across the entire surface, and the finish will be unique.

Subject to the technology described above, such a coating will serve you for many years, even in loaded rooms (like a kitchen and a corridor). We've covered just a few ways to create a textured surface, but you can use any means to create a unique design.

Among other types of finishing materials, decorative plaster for interior wall decoration occupies a special place due to its characteristics and aesthetic appearance, which it gives to the surfaces to be coated.

Decorative plaster for walls is similar in composition to the usual plaster in common with it - sand, cement, lime, but, unlike it, it may contain various additional granules: various chips, wood fibers, pieces of mica, etc. Cement is usually used as a bonding base, fillers are sold separately, and are added when the final layer of plaster is applied. In addition, the structure of the plaster includes additives that improve its properties and provide antiseptic, adhesive, bactericidal and hydrophobic effects.

In addition to making the surface of the walls aesthetically pleasing, decorative plaster evens it out, smoothing grooves and other defects. You can buy plaster both in finished form, in a pasty state, and in dry form for dilution with water. It is not difficult to work with this decorative coating; if you have the necessary skills, you can plaster the walls with your own hands without the help of specialists.

The popularity of this type of decorative finishing material is due to the advantages of plaster over other types of finishing:

  • moisture resistance of the coating;
  • resistance to humidity levels, temperature changes;
  • no need to specially process walls before decorative plastering;
  • providing additional sound insulation and thermal insulation;
  • strength and durability of the coating;
  • the ability to realize any idea, a variety of textures and shades.

Types of decorative plaster for interior wall decoration

It is possible to classify the material according to the type of binder and filler. In the first case, it is divided into the following types:

  • acrylic (polymer);
  • mineral;
  • silicate;
  • silicone.

Acrylic
Mineral
Silicate
Silicone

Taking into account the type of filler, the coating is divided into textured, structural (based on marble chips), Venetian and flock. They are distinguished by their decorative properties. Using textured and structural materials, you can create a relief on the surface, and with the help of the Venetian and flock types, you can create a smooth or glossy wall.

In addition to the above, there are specific types of this decorative coating:

  • colored plaster - it is based on marble chips and acrylic. Waterproof, durable enough, available in fifteen shades;
  • roller - consists of a natural filler with a fraction of 1 to 2.5 mm, when applied, it forms an texture with small depressions and channels;
  • latex-plastic - forms a glossy surface with an imitation of smooth natural stone or marble, as well as relief textures. The material is resistant to moisture, it can be washed, add different colors when applied;
  • coating "wet silk" - texture with pearlescent particles, imitating a fabric surface;
  • coating "sea breeze" - creates a translucent layer with a slight tint of mother-of-pearl, the composition contains fine-grained sand.

Mineral

The composition of mineral plaster includes lime, mineral particles, clay of various colors, stone chips and cement as the main binder. Today, mineral decorative coating is the most widespread, it is considered absolutely environmentally friendly. Despite the fact that the structure of mineral plaster contains lime, it is not afraid of moisture and wet cleaning, it also contains substances that do not allow lime to dissolve. It is suitable for all types of mineral substrates, including concrete, gypsum plaster, drywall, fiberboard and chipboard. The mineral mixture is usually used to cover walls that are subject to abrasion and have protrusions (corridor, staircase, entrance area), as well as the surface of the building's basement. In the photo below you can see an example of covering the hall walls with mineral plaster.

Among the advantages of this type of coating are the following:

  • high resistance to mechanical and atmospheric influences, temperature extremes. Over time, the strength of the coating only increases;
  • forms a "breathing" surface;
  • fire safety;
  • ease of care, the possibility of wet cleaning.

However, the mineral coating is vibration-resistant. Under such conditions, over time, it can become covered with cracks, and crumble if the wall was poorly primed.

The mineral mixture is sold only in dry form, prepared by diluting with water at room temperature. Mineral plaster is divided into types, taking into account the size of the granules and the composition of the filler.

Polymer

It is an elastic plaster with a base of various binders (acrylic, epoxy resin, polyurethane). Types of polymer coatings are divided into aqueous and non-aqueous. The first type includes acrylic, polyvinyl acetate, butane-styrene plasters, the second - epoxy and polyurethane. Due to its composition, it is enough to apply polymer coatings in the thinnest layer, suitable for concrete surfaces, cement-sand, drywall. The polymer solution is usually sold ready-made, applied in a continuous line, depending on the size of the granules.

The advantages of this type are:

  • plastic;
  • vapor permeability;
  • strength, resistance to various influences;
  • hydrophobicity;
  • environmental friendliness of the material;
  • good sound insulation;
  • rich assortment of colors and textures;
  • ease of application, which you can handle with your own hands without the help of professionals.

Silicone

Silicone plasters are durable, their only drawback can only be considered a high price. Silicone decorating solution consists of silicone resins, various fillers (woven fibers, mineral granules), special additives (antifungal, bactericidal), as well as pigments of various shades. This material is a type of polymer plaster, it has the following advantages:

  • creates a protective coating of the surface from moisture, damage;
  • ease of care, dirt can be easily removed from the coating;
  • the color of the outer layer remains unchanged for a long time;
  • protects walls from mold and mildew.

Like any other type of polymer plaster, silicone is applied to the wall, pre-treated with a special primer, which is produced by the same manufacturer as the plaster. You should only use the type of primer indicated on the manufacturer's packaging for the silicone coating; if you use any other, the decorative coating will not adhere to the base in the right way. There is no need to dilute the silicone plaster with water, as it is sold ready-made.

Structural

The material produced on an acrylic or silicate base has a thin-layer structure. To create a decorative effect, quartz or marble chips are found in its composition. Only a mixture of white is produced, pigments are purchased separately in order to tint the material with your own hands at your discretion. In appearance, structural plaster looks like a grainy, heterogeneous mass, therefore it is often used to create patterns. Structural mixtures are divided into types according to small, medium and large fractions of stone chips. The photo shows a coarse structural plaster that creates a noticeable decorative relief.

The structural mixture has good adhesion to most mineral surfaces, can be applied to drywall and chipboard. Water-based structural plaster is used for interior finishing. The whole process of applying the material with your own hands is quite easy, since the mixture has high plasticity and is sold ready for use.

Textured

This type of plaster is less uniform than structural. It is based on lime flour, granite, marble chips, synthetic fibers, wood, mica; a polymer base can also be used. The textured finish is well suited for covering various surfaces - wooden walls, brick, plastered, concrete. The advantages of this type of coating are:

  • the ability to imitate various types of textures: stone, leather, paper, concrete surface, wood, thanks to which textured plaster has gained popularity among many users and designers;
  • due to its structure with special particles, it masks visible defects and unevenness of the walls;
  • practically does not require special surface preparation before application, it is enough just to cover the walls with an adhesive solution;
  • air permeability, high strength and durability of the plastered coating;
  • convenience of the material: it is sold both in dry and ready-made forms of various packaging, the solution can be tinted during or after application;
  • affordable price;
  • design decoration with a textured solution can be easily created with your own hands, this does not require special skills or knowledge.

Textured plaster is divided into types:

  • "lamb" coating - has a uniform granular structure, roughness;
  • "fur coat" coating - the main component is cement, the surface is rough in the form of small villi;
  • "bark beetle" coating - a fine-grained stone filler creates grooves on the surface, imitating wood eaten by insects.

Venetian

It is a multi-layer coating, the composition of the Venetian plaster includes marble chips and slaked lime. It is a smooth type of plaster that looks like marble or onyx. This is an expensive material that requires special skills when working with it, moreover, it has a long drying process. It is applied in several layers (up to eight layers) with a rubber spatula, each of them should dry well. Often this type of material is used to decorate the interior of premises in a classical or antique style. Venetian plaster can be polished to a glossy finish and can be tinted in various shades. Before applying the Venetian mixture, you must first prepare the walls, otherwise the decorative coating may crack. Finishing in this way of plastering will help to obtain the effect of visually increasing the space by refracting light from the walls.

Flokovaya

This coating consists of natural cellulose, silk fibers, mineral filler and pigments. This type of plaster is expensive, but creates a highly artistic effect, additionally soundproofing the room. The cover is breathable, practical. The sophisticated application technique includes three stages: applying an adhesive base to walls, flocks and varnishing the surface, resulting in an original, aesthetic coating. The laboriousness of the process requires the use of professional skills and knowledge, so it will be quite difficult to do flocking with your own hands.

The environmental friendliness and durability of the material contributed to the spread of its use in the decoration of various premises - the walls of apartments, children's rooms, public institutions, bathrooms, kitchens. The lacquered outer layer is not subject to abrasion, burning, moisture penetration, and, if necessary, the coating can be easily repaired. The photo below clearly shows the aesthetics of this decorative coating.

Based on marble chips

Finishing with the addition of marble or granite chips creates a very strong and durable coating. The appearance of such a finish depends on the size of the crumb. To give the coating a golden shine, quartz sand is added to the solution. The coating on the basis of marble chips is indispensable in those places that are most exposed to abrasion, mechanical stress, for example, in hallways, or in apartments with active pets. The finished surface with marble chips can be tinted in various shades.

Before applying the marble coating, it is necessary to prime the walls very well, otherwise they will shine through. Marble plaster adheres well to almost any surface. This material has a similarity to Venetian plaster and its other common types in that it uses a synthetic binder in the base. Application should be carried out in continuous stripes to avoid unevenness after the plaster layer has completely dried.

Creating a relief with your own hands

Decorative plaster should be applied to the prepared wall surface. At the same time, the old coating is removed, the walls are cleaned to a concrete or brick base, the debris is removed with a construction vacuum cleaner or an ordinary damp cloth. Places where plaster can accidentally get into during the process are sealed with masking tape or covered with film. Further, in the presence of cracks, they are repaired, and the wall is primed in several layers.

If you need to treat a small area, it is recommended to use ready-made plaster mixes, and if a large area is to be treated, it is more economical to use dry mixes, diluting them with water in accordance with the instructions.

When applying the material, it should be borne in mind that the light shade of the plaster is the basis for the darker one. The solution is applied with a rubber or metal trowel, flock plaster can be applied using a spray gun. Next, do-it-yourself relief is applied. In this case, you can use various tools: special patterned rollers, plastic wrap, draw with your own hands, use ready-made stencils to squeeze out the pattern. After that, a thinner and darker second layer is applied so that the drawing can be seen from under it. After 30 minutes, a polyurethane sealant is applied to secure the result and give the coating strength.

Drawings and panels

Drawing on plaster will create a unique and original design. The photos below prove that a panel made with your own hands or with the help of professionals will serve as an adornment for any, even the most modest, interior. It is best to use a free wall, protruding or a wall in a niche as a place for drawing. The panel should be in harmony with the rest of the decoration of the room. All walls in the room should be decorated with panels only if it is a nursery. To understand all the intricacies of drawing a picture or panel will help photos and videos.

The simplest technique is to apply a volumetric stencil panel. To do this, you need to cut a drawing on a sheet of hardboard, plywood or drywall, which is then fixed on a leveled and dried wall using aerosol glue. The plaster is applied along the contour of the stencil, the more mortar is applied, the more voluminous the drawing will be. After the pattern has dried, a roller with tint paint is rolled over it.

Another way is painting on structural plaster, in which with the help of sharpened wooden sticks, sponges, brushes, textures are created on the panel using a cardboard template. The third, more complex method is stucco panels, that is, three-dimensional drawings on the whole wall or whole paintings. This technique usually requires the participation of professionals.

Plaster finishing methods

The creation of a decorative effect on the wall begins after all the preparatory work is completed. There are the following do-it-yourself plaster finishing methods:

  • Venetian plaster is used to create the effect of polished marble on the wall. It is applied with a rubber spatula in several thin layers. Each of the layers is applied with tangential movements and different spatulas, thanks to which the layers are applied in different directions, and the light reflected in them creates a glowing effect. The finishing layer is fixed with matte varnish or wax;
  • to create a simple relief pattern, the plaster is applied in one layer with a spatula and left to dry, or slightly smoothed with a trowel;
  • with a notched or combed trowel, you can create uniform patterns and regular shapes (in a semicircle, in a checkerboard pattern);
  • ordinary plastic wrap will help create a chaotic pattern: to do this, you need to lean it unfolded or rolled up against the surface of the raw plaster, then remove it, if necessary, smooth the relief. An example of such a technique is shown in the photo;
  • with the help of special textured mixtures, you can create various surfaces - such as "bark beetle", "rain", "rock". In this case, a spatula is used;
  • a fairly simple way of finishing - using nozzles for rubber rollers with a ready-made convex pattern applied to them. It can be floral ornaments, geometric shapes, and much more.

Care rules

Despite the fact that decorative plaster is a fairly durable and resistant coating, you should adhere to some rules for caring for it. The first year after application, it does not require special care, it is enough to carry out wet cleaning with or without a regular detergent.

In order to create an additional water-repellent and protective coating, the plaster can be coated with a special wax. After several years of operation, this method will help to renew the outer layer of the coating. After application, the wax layer is polished with a rag; further care for it should not include the use of solvents - only ordinary water or soapy water.

Glazing is another of the care options, it adds shine and emphasizes the shape of the relief of the coating. A special tool is applied with a mitten, you can do with a sponge or brush. If the coating has lost its appearance over time, or needs to be renewed, you can paint it again, remove it to the base and apply a new layer, or level it with putty over the coating.

Wall decoration with decorative plaster: types of plaster

There are two main types of decorative plaster: facade and interior. The most resistant to external influences is the facade plaster, therefore it is used to decorate the outer walls of the house.

There are such types of decorative plaster for walls in composition:

Interior plaster is divided into four main types:

  • Silicate plaster

It is produced on the basis of "liquid glass", and is most often used to decorate the external walls of the building. This type of plaster has high ductility and is very durable. It is delivered to stores in a ready-to-use form.

  • Mineral plaster

It is the cheapest plaster. It is based on ordinary cement and is white and therefore requires staining. Such plaster is sold dry in bags.

  • Silicone plaster

Silicone plaster contains silicone resins, which make it very plastic and moisture resistant. The plaster is sold ready-to-use immediately.

  • Acrylic plaster

Acrylic plaster is made on the basis of acrylic resin, which makes it resistant to deformation of the base. This plaster is sold ready to use.

Classification of decorative plaster according to the effect obtained:

  • Structural plaster

This type of plaster has a granular structure with the addition of small granules and may be interspersed with fine natural stone or wood.

  • Textured plaster

This type of plaster allows you to give the surface of the walls a special relief and texture. It can also have inclusions of granules, and differs from structural plaster in a slightly different composition.

  • Venetian plaster

Venetian plaster is made of marble powder, which gives the walls the effect of finishing with natural stone. The main advantage of this type of plaster is its complete waterproofness.

Necessary preparation of walls for decorative plaster

Before you start finishing the walls with decorative plaster, you need to clean and prepare the walls. The old coating (wallpaper, paint or plaster) is removed from the walls, and the gaps are covered with putty. Then, before applying the plaster, the walls must be additionally primed. The wall is ready, you can start plastering.

Modern wall decoration with decorative plaster - 22 photos of interesting options updated: June 16, 2017 by the author: Andrey Zinchenko

Decorating walls with decorative plaster is work that is carried out on internal or external surfaces. They aim to give walls or ceilings a specific texture and color. Depending on the composition chosen, different techniques for applying this material are used. Only preparatory work remains unchanged.

To decorate the walls with plaster with your own hands, you will need the following:

  • spatulas of different sizes;
  • graters and half graters;
  • trowel;
  • capacity;
  • brushes, rollers and sponges;
  • drill with mixer attachment;
  • stepladder or scaffolding;
  • plastic film, masking tape;
  • plaster mix, wax, paint.

For the preparatory stage, the following tools and materials are needed:

  • sandpaper, sander;
  • rule;
  • level and plumb line;
  • spatulas;
  • reinforcing mesh;
  • deep penetration primer;
  • starting plaster, putty.

Preparatory stage

Plastering requires a perfectly prepared surface. To do this, you need to carry out the following manipulations:

  1. Completely remove the old coating or clean it from traces of paint, wallpaper, and so on.
  2. Level the walls with starter plaster and reinforcing mesh or drywall sheets.
  3. Seal possible surface defects such as gouges and cracks with putty.
  4. Remove protruding fragments.
  5. Check the evenness of the walls with a level or plumb line.
  6. Apply two coats of primer to increase adhesion.

Structural plaster wall decoration

With the help of this material, finishing work is carried out on external and internal surfaces. Decorating with decorative plaster with your own hands does not require rich experience or qualifications - a home craftsman can easily cope with it. Difficulties can arise only with the application of the mixture to the ceiling.

Preparation of the solution

The modern construction market offers ready-made mixtures in plastic containers of various volumes or dry powders in bags that must be diluted with water. If we are talking about saving a budget, then it is better to buy a powdery material and prepare decorative plaster yourself. For this purpose, you will need an electric drill with a mixer attachment, water and a mixing container.

Important! Most structural plasters dry very quickly, and water cannot be added to them after preparation, therefore it is not recommended to make large batches in order not to lose material.

Material consumption directly depends on the filler fraction:

  • Coarse material - 2 kg per square meter.
  • Medium-grained - 1.7 kg.
  • Fine-grained - 0.7 kg.

The first step is to wash the dilution container and pour into it the amount of water indicated by the manufacturer on the package. The liquid temperature should be approximately 20 degrees. Then the solution should be gradually added to the water, stirring it with a mixer.

After that, you need to wait about 15 minutes and stir the plaster again. If the material is made on the basis of acrylic resins, then color is added to it, otherwise it is subject to subsequent painting.

Application features

The prepared composition is taken on a spatula and applied to the wall, after which the plaster is stretched over the surface. Excess material is also removed with a spatula. During application, it is important to observe the thickness of the plaster layer, which should correspond to the fraction of the material, therefore it is not recommended to make it more than 3 mm. At the same time, too thin a layer will not be able to completely cover the walls, and after drying, a primer will appear on them.

As mentioned above, this material dries instantly, so a limited time is allotted for work. In order for the plaster layer to be uniform, it should be applied at one time. If the surface to be treated is too large, then you will have to divide it into sections with masking tape. Then apply the plaster with an overlap, remove the tape until the material has hardened, and treat the rest of the area in the same way.

The applied layer of plaster should not be thicker than the grain of the filler included in the composition

Grinding plaster

This stage is considered the most important. The appearance of the resulting surface and its performance depend on its correct conduct. Work should be started immediately after the material has set. This usually takes 30 minutes. It is easy to check the readiness of the wall: just put your palm against it, if it does not stick, you can start.

The procedure is carried out with a plastic trowel. To achieve different effects, different rubbing techniques are used (see photo):

You should know! If for some reason it is not possible to process the entire wall in one go, then you do not need to grind exactly to the boundaries of the treated area. It is necessary to leave the plaster at the edges intact, and after applying the entire layer, carefully wipe the joints.

Dyeing

A day after the main work, you can start painting the wall. The first step is to sand the entire surface with sandpaper in order to smooth out minor defects. Then the wall is painted a dark color and waited for it to dry. The next layer of paint should be lighter by 1-2 tones. Work is carried out with an ordinary paint roller, and the joints of the wall with the floor and ceiling are treated with a brush. After the second coat has dried, it is recommended to apply a glossy varnish.

Wall decoration with textured plaster

First, a solution is prepared taking into account the manufacturer's recommendations, after which it is applied to the surface with spatulas. dries longer than structural, so you can safely process the entire wall. Excess material is also removed with a spatula. After processing the entire area of the wall, you can start creating the texture.

How to make a textured layer

Such coverage can be obtained using the following tools:

  • roller;
  • stencil stamp;
  • trowel and spatula.

Using a roller is the easiest and fastest way. With this tool, you can create a velor-like surface. To do this, you need to forcefully pass them along the entire surface of the wall, while the movements should be directed in one direction. Then wait until the material dries and remove the protruding fragments with a spatula blade.

If it seems too complicated a process, then you can purchase special stencils-stamps with embossed patterns in hardware stores. These products are simply pressed against fresh plaster, after which a relief remains on it. The main inconvenience is the need to constantly rinse the stencil with water in order to remove material residues from its surface.

On a note! When buying everything you need, you need to purchase several small stencils for the corners.

Using spatulas and trowels, they create patterns that resemble the texture of natural stone, suede or concrete. You need to work with them according to the same principle as with all of the above tools. A brush, spatula or trowel is pressed against the surface and carried over its entire area. If you don't have a construction tool at hand, you can use a regular sponge or even a plastic bag. In general, anything that can leave a relief on the surface will do.

How to stain

Such decorative plaster for interior work does not require mandatory staining, but to emphasize the texture, it is better to do it all the same. First, the surface is cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper, then the resulting dust is brushed off. The first layer of paint is applied with a long-haired roller, and the second with a short-haired one. The tones of the paint should be slightly different. They need to be applied at intervals of a day, while the plaster after giving the texture should dry for about 48 hours.

If there is no roller at hand, then the process of staining decor plaster is as follows:

  1. Open a can of paint and pour it into a special container. A brush is completely dipped into it, for the entire length of the bristle. Then squeeze against the embossed edge of the container to remove excess paint. If there is no special container, you can squeeze the bristles of the brush against a piece of multilayer cardboard.
  2. Now you can start applying paint. It is not necessary to paint over every detail; you should apply a layer with sweeping movements, barely touching the surface. Thus, the paint will not rub into the texture, but only touch the protruding fragments.
  3. Wait until the first layer dries and apply a second, lighter one. In this case, the same technique is used as for the first layer.
  4. The last step is to apply the varnish. This material is first diluted with water in a 1: 1 ratio, after which it is applied with a wide, clean brush. After some time (each varnish dries for a certain period), you can apply a second layer. After about 1-2 days, you can touch the plastered wall.

Some craftsmen use the blur method. It involves the application of only one layer of paint, which is subsequently rubbed with a damp cloth. As a result, the texture remains saturated in color, and the protruding parts are lighter.

Drawings and panels

Before working with decorative plaster, you need to immediately decide on the presence of additional design elements on the walls, for example, various drawings or panels. They are able to decorate and refine even the most ordinary interior, especially if they are combined with the right lighting.

What drawings can be applied and where to place them

A safe option is a separate wall, which is pre-finished with stone or stucco around the perimeter. It is also appropriate to place these elements between windows, near interior doors or along the edges of an arched passage.

If we are talking about a children's room, then here you can fantasize as much as you like. Drawings can be drawn to the theme of the child's favorite fairy tale or cartoon. For a children's room, it is permissible to apply drawings over the area of all walls.

As for the bedrooms or living rooms, everything is much more complicated here. The first rule is that the drawing should not bring disharmony into the interior. Drawings on the walls are permissible only for classical design, baroque, empire style, etc. It goes without saying that in modern or high-tech, drawings and panels will look superfluous.

A bas-relief on the wall is an excellent solution for creating a stylish and unique interior.

The tone of the painted panel should either contrast with the tone of the adjacent wall, or differ from it by 2 tones. The combination of variegated and dark colors is unacceptable.

Application techniques

There are three main methods of surface decoration that require artistic taste. Therefore, it is better to trust professionals or get a master class on decorative plasters.

Working with a stencil

This option is the easiest to create. As a stencil, you can use fragments of plywood or drywall, having previously cut patterns on them.

The application process is as follows:

Creating a bas-relief using construction tools

The embossing method is also considered one of the most popular. It involves the use of plastic fine-grained plasters based on synthetic binders, acrylic paints and colorless varnish. To carry out such operations, you will also need brushes of different shapes and sizes, spatulas made of various materials, sharpened wooden pegs.

The process is as follows:

  • After applying the finishing layer of plaster, the master, using the selected tool, applies a relief pattern to the surface. The simplest example is waves drawn with a paint brush.
  • The composition is completed with a decorated embossed frame, which is created using a sponge or foam roller.
  • After the drawing is completely dry, it is painted. There are also no clear recommendations here - it all depends on imagination and talent.

Hand sculpting

The latter method is considered the most difficult and without a specialized education, sculpture, most likely, will not work. The purpose of this operation is to create a relief on the wall being treated by means of hand sculpting. Such panels can occupy only part of the wall, or even the entire area. After they dry, the surfaces are also treated with paint and varnish.

Do-it-yourself decorative plaster is applied quite simply, if you do not take into account the artistic aspects of the issue. The main thing is to adhere to the above tips and recommendations of the manufacturers.

For the completeness of the appearance of the walls, at the moment the main competition for wallpaper coverings is plaster for interior decoration.

Immediately it is worth making a reservation, you should not confuse it with ordinary material for leveling flaws in the surface, because decorative plaster combines the properties of a leveling, finishing and finishing layer.

Features of decorative plaster

In composition, it is also a powdery mass, but differs in composition by its impurities. In addition to the main components, stone chips, wood fibers, and coloring pigments are mixed into it.

Modern interior plaster and its advantages

Consider the advantages of using this finishing material, which both designers and other people use to implement their projects with pleasure during renovations at home:
