Specialization: a professional in the field of construction and repair (a full cycle of finishing works, both internal and external, from sewerage to electrics and finishing works), installation of window structures. Hobby: see the column "SPECIALIZATION AND SKILLS"

I had to figure out how to sheathe the toilet with panels, as they say, in an "emergency": there was a need to bring the bathroom into a usable condition as soon as possible, while the budget was minimal.

After studying the literature and consulting with experts, I set to work. The result turned out to be quite acceptable, so in this article I will talk about those nuances that a novice master should pay attention to.

Finishing material

Plastic lining and other consumables

If the task is to complete the finishing quickly and inexpensively, then the best option would be wall cladding with plastic panels. This technology does not contain the so-called "wet" stages, so during the work you do not have to wait for the solution or glue to dry.

  1. The cladding material is made of polymer panels, the standard length of which is 2.5 - 3 m.
  2. The panels are made hollow inside, which reduces their weight, while increasing heat and sound insulation characteristics.

Most of the models of plastic lining are still difficult to call a good heat insulator, therefore, in cold rooms, I would recommend mounting a layer of moisture-resistant insulation under the cladding.

  1. The long sides of each panel are shaped like tongue-and-groove locks. The presence of these locks makes it possible to tightly fit the parts to each other, avoiding the appearance of gaps, but maintaining the mobility necessary to compensate for thermal expansion.
  2. Special adapters are used to attach products to capital surfaces and to connect them at an angle. Their assortment is quite extensive, so on sale you can easily find the part you need.

  1. The surface of the panels can be smooth or textured. Products with the applied texture look more attractive, but require more careful maintenance: dirt accumulates in the recesses on the surface, so you will have to wash the bathroom lining more often and more diligently.
  2. The color of products can also be very different. The low-cost segment is represented by plain plastic, but I still like panels with imitation of stone or wood. Yes, they are more expensive, but this finish looks more expressive.

In addition to the plastic itself and additional elements, we will need other materials. The approximate cost of raw materials for lining the toilet is shown in the table:

As you can see, consumables for the most part are not very expensive, therefore it is advisable to purchase them with a small margin. I usually take 15-20% more than calculated.

Advantages of panel cladding

Plastic panels, like finishing materials for bathrooms, have a number of objective advantages:

  1. The finishing price will be really very low... It would be cheaper, perhaps, only to paint the walls, but this is possible only if they are perfectly flat. Otherwise, we will spend a lot of time and money on plastering and putty.
  2. The finishing technique does not involve the use of expensive components and complex tools... And plastic is not very demanding on the skills of the master: ordinary skill is quite enough, and you can figure out how to mount the panels correctly in the process. Fortunately, the installation technology allows you to correct mistakes.

  1. The surface finished with plastic receives a fairly effective protection against moisture, since the casing is highly airtight. At the same time, the panels themselves do not swell or deform in a humid environment.
  2. Finally, the plastic can be washed regularly, which is a prerequisite for maintaining a sanitary state for the toilet.

On the downside, I would attribute it to the most presentable view: after all, it is better to use panels for covering a bathroom either in a standard apartment or in a country house, but for a house with a good repair it is worth choosing a more expensive finish. The strength of the material is also relatively low, but to compensate for this deficiency, it is enough to know a few tricks, which I will discuss below.

Work technology

Room preparation

If the walls in the toilet are flat enough, then the panels can simply be glued on non-load-bearing surfaces. But such a situation is very rare, because a significant part of the time it will take to repair a bathroom will be taken up by preparation for cladding.

We do this:

  1. We knock down the old finish, exposing a concrete or brick base. The cladding from the tile must also be removed: if this is not done, then sooner or later the tile will begin to fall off already under the cladding.

Sturdy paint and plaster that won't peel off, I usually leave it on just to save time. Even if they begin to exfoliate and fall off under the plastic, it will still not be visible, and this will not affect the functionality of the finish.

  1. We check the wall for cracks. We embroider the detected defects, clean them of debris and fill them with a repair compound. A cement mortar or a cheap tiled mortar will do.
  2. To prevent fungi and bacteria from developing under the plastic panels, we treat all surfaces with an antiseptic primer. I usually do two impregnations with an interval of 6 - 12 hours: this time is just enough for the material to dry.

  1. If, among other things, a ceiling sheathing is supposed, we extend the wiring in advance to connect the built-in lamps. We put the wires in special housings that protect them from moisture, and fasten them to the ceiling on plastic clamps or wire hangers.

Frame

Further, the instruction assumes the installation of a frame to which the plastic lining will be attached. For the manufacture of the supporting lathing, you can use either wooden beams (cheaper, but you need to impregnate with an antiseptic), or metal profiles (more expensive, but they do not corrode and allow you to form a significant gap between the sheathing and the walls).

I prefer the wood version. I perform the work according to the following scheme:

  1. I treat wooden beams with antiseptic impregnation, dry them for 12 hours and cut them to size.
  2. I apply the beam to the wall, drill holes in it with a drill, then through the holes I put marks on the wall and already on them with a perforator with a drill on concrete I make nests for fasteners.
  3. Since the panels are mounted vertically, I place the frame parts horizontally, in increments of about 50 cm. The optimal solution is to lay the crate belts at the height of the knee, hip and shoulder: this way we definitely guarantee that the plastic will not be damaged by awkward movement.
  4. After drilling the holes, I drive plastic dowels into them. I apply the bars and fix them with locking screws, slightly sinking their caps into the wood.
  5. Separately I fasten several thick boards to the wall, securely installing them with several anchors. I mark on the drawing the position of these parts with an accuracy of a centimeter - it is to them that the hinged elements will subsequently be attached (washstand, shelf, mirror, brush holder, etc.).

  1. In the same way, I do the lathing on the ceiling. For laying the covers with cables, I cut grooves in the bars of such a size that the wires are not pinched.
  2. Sometimes the question arises - how to sheathe pipes in the toilet with plastic panels. If the riser is located in a niche, then there are no problems - we simply close it with a crate. But the sewer pipes, standing along the wall, need to be masked with a separate box - for this I install a vertical beam, which I fix on the floor and on the ceiling with metal corners, and then I make a crate under the panels.

To provide access to the pipelines, a square made of a thin bar must be laid in the lower part of the box, to which the inspection hatch will then be attached.

In principle, according to the same scheme, a frame is made of a steel profile - with the only difference that working with metal with your own hands is somewhat more difficult than with wood. However, if you dealt with drywall, then no difficulties are foreseen for you.

Sheathing and finishing

When the frame is ready, you can start trimming the toilet. The room is small, so the work will not take much time:

  1. We install starting profiles on the corners, carefully leveling them and fixing them to the crate with glue, screws or staples.
  2. Along the perimeter of the room in the upper part, we fix the ceiling profile, which will serve to connect the vertical and horizontal cladding.
  3. We cut the first panel in height (the part should be about 5 mm less than the height of the room - this gap will ensure unhindered thermal deformation). We insert the panel with the lock spike into the starting profile in the far corner and carefully align it vertically.

  1. We fix the free edge of the panel to the frame using either self-tapping screws, or glue, or a stapler. I consider the latter method preferable: both quickly and simply, and if necessary, you can disassemble the structure with minimal damage to the material. At the same time, the upper edge of the lining is inserted into the groove of the ceiling plinth.

  1. Insert the next panel with a thorn into the groove of the already installed one. We repeat the alignment and fixation. We continue to type panels until we reach the corner.
  2. We cut the last panel lengthwise (we cut soft plastic with a painting knife, hard plastic with a file with fine teeth) and insert it into the starting profile without fastening, simply bending along the length.

  1. According to the same principle, we sheathe the walls, the ceiling and the box that masks the sewer pipe. In the ceiling panels, according to the markings, we make holes for the installation of built-in ones.
  2. We install an inspection hatch on the pipe box.
  3. We fix the skirting boards from below, masking the lower edge of the panels. All cracks are sealed with moisture resistant silicone.

Conclusion

When deciding how to sheathe a toilet in an apartment, you should first consider using a plastic lining. You can learn how to work with this material after a minimum of practice, accompanied by reading the recommendations and watching the video in this article. PVC panels or, simply put, plastic is much more popular than the same ceramic tiles when it comes to decoration. And, choosing between the same tiles and plastic panels, many tend to favor the latter. What is so attractive about the material? It's that simple! The main advantages of PVC panels are their low cost and ease of installation in comparison with the same ceramics. If we compare prices, then making panels will cost at least 4 times less than laying tiles. Moreover, the water resistance of both materials remains at a height.

Of course, ceramics are much stronger and more durable, but we must pay tribute - and PVC panels can last a long time if you treat them with care. In addition, they are quite resistant to hot steam or chemicals. Other advantages of the material are as follows.

  1. Ease of installation- so that you do not have to perform a large amount of work. And you don't need a lot of tools. In addition, you do not have to fiddle with adhesive solutions intended for laying tiles. And you don't need to have any special skills to carry out the work.

  2. No need to level the walls before finishing... So, if the panels will be mounted on the frame, the base does not need special preparation (at least, it definitely does not need to be aligned).
  3. It will be possible to use the toilet immediately after the installation of the panels... After all, you don't have to wait until the tile glue dries.
  4. You can install PVC panels in absolutely any room, but most often they are used to decorate the walls in the bathroom, toilet, kitchen, bathroom.
  5. Large selection of color variations makes it possible to choose panels for any interior style. Some panels can imitate wood, stone and other natural materials.

  6. The panels are very easy to clean... It is enough to dilute the soap solution and wipe them with a cloth soaked in it.

On a note! Even if you pay for the installation of panels by the master, and not do everything yourself, in any case, you will be able to save a lot of money. Panel assembly services are much cheaper than a good tiler.

Most panel manufacturers report that the material has an average lifespan of 25 years. However, in general, this aspect will directly depend on how carefully the owner of the toilet treats the decoration. By the way, during installation, even on the frame, the panels steal very little free space (no more than 5 cm), so that they can be easily mounted even in narrow and cramped rooms.

Disadvantages of PVC panels

There is no ideal material that does not have any flaws. So PVC panels also have their drawbacks. It is important to know about them before deciding to purchase such material.

  1. Whatever one may say, part of the free space of the panel is still stolen during installation. This is especially true for the frame installation method. If a few centimeters along the walls can play a big role, then it is better to refuse to install panels and choose some other material for decoration.
  2. If the walls are curved, then it will be impossible to mount the panels on glue, only the frame method is allowed.
  3. PVC almost does not burn, but when melted, when it is exposed to high temperatures, it will emit very pungent smoke, which can play a cruel joke with the owner of the apartment in case of fire.
  4. No one is protected from fakes, and when buying material, you can run into low-quality PVC. It can be hazardous to human health. And also panels of poor quality do not differ in strength and durability.

Despite these shortcomings, PVC panels have still been and remain one of the most popular materials. And it is unlikely that something will be able to shake their position in the near future.

Any PVC panel is, in fact, a lining, a plastic board that has a very low weight. The surface of the material is smooth and even, and the panels themselves should not be curved. If you look at the panel from the end, you can see that there are pores in the middle of it. The strips themselves can have different dimensions.

Table. Parameters of PVC panels.

As for the colors, PVC panels can be painted in any shade and can perfectly cope with the imitation of a number of natural materials. Their surface can also be both matte and glossy, there are also mirror options.

On a note! As for the pattern on the panels, it can be applied by printing or by gluing a thermal film. There are also photo panels that look like the previously popular wall murals. And in this case, you can choose absolutely any pattern for decorating the walls.

As for the choice of material, then you should adhere to a number of recommendations in order to purchase really high-quality and good panels. Unfortunately, there are a lot of fakes and bad material on the market.

Advice! It is much more convenient to work in small rooms using narrow panels. But in the spacious, you can install wide ones. Narrow ones in general are much easier to mount, and there are few scraps left from them. The optimum panel thickness for toilet installation is 8 mm.

It is important to understand that not always a high price - an indicator of quality... Sometimes the cost of the material can be greatly increased by dealers. It is worth focusing on the manufacturer, that is, on the brand, as well as on the physical characteristics of the panels.

When purchasing material, you must not forget about accessories (for example, corners). And it is important to choose the same color and type as the selected panels. As for the rail for the frame or starting profiles, it is important to choose neat and even products.

The process of installing panels on walls (DIY step-by-step instructions)

Installation of panels is quite simple, and if you have the time and desire, you can do everything yourself and save a lot of money on paying for the services of the master. You will need a minimum of tools. This is a level, a cutting tool, a screwdriver, a pencil and a tape measure, a puncher.

Step 1. The first step is to do a little preparatory work. It is required to remove all old coating from the walls (tiles, peeling paint, etc.). Also, if a major overhaul is planned, even before the installation of PVC panels, it is required to replace the water supply and sewerage pipes. Before installing the panels, the walls should be primed and dried well.

Advice! Immediately you need to outline the places where the cabinets and shelves will be installed, if they are conceived by the designer. This will make it possible to equip the places of their attachment - it will not work just like that to hang furniture on the walls with PVC trim. You also need to immediately lay the ceramics on the floor or finish the base with another material.

Step 2. The panels must be brought into the house and left alone for several hours so that they are at the same temperature as the ambient temperature. It is impossible to mount panels that have just been brought in from the street (especially from frost). You also need to immediately purchase starting profiles and overhead corners for decor.

Step 3. It is worth making the boxes right away in order for the water supply and sewerage system. They can be made from a metal profile, and then sheathed with plasterboard.

Step 4. Now you need to glue the starting profile for the panels onto the sealant. It is glued down along the wall and along the doorway in the corner. In this case, the walls in the toilet are even, which means that when installing the panels, you can do without a frame.

Step 5. Next, you need to measure the height from floor to ceiling or to its frame. The result obtained must be transferred to the panel and draw an even line with a marker or pencil using a square. By the way, the cut line of the panel should be slightly less than the length obtained during the measurement - by about 5 mm. This will make it easier to install the panels.

Step 6. Now, along the marked line, you need to cut off the excess panel. You can cut PVC with a grinder or a stationery knife. Thus, all panels will need to be adjusted in height. If you need to cut the panel lengthwise, then you should cut it with a clerical knife along the edge of the desired honeycomb from the front and back sides.

Step 7. Next, you can install the first panel. It is required to bring it into the starting profile and be sure to level it up. The evenness of the rest of the row will depend on how evenly the first panel is installed.

It is important that the panels are installed evenly

Step 8. The panel needs to be fixed. This can be done using a self-tapping screw screwed into the sidewall of the panel, or by placing it on a sealant.

Step 10. After the panels are installed on the wall, you need to close their joints with corners set on a sealant.

Step 11. After finishing the installation of the walls, you can start finishing the ceiling. If it will be produced with PVC panels, then it is necessary to act according to the same principle - to fasten each panel to a metal profile in stages. True, the fixation will be carried out precisely by means of self-tapping screws.

If the installation of PVC panels will be carried out on the frame, then the walls must also be prepared, and then the bases of the frame - wooden slats or metal profiles - must be fixed on them. The starting profiles are then attached to them, and then the panels are installed. You can fix them on the rails with self-tapping screws or a construction stapler.

Decor and decoration: interesting solutions (photo)

When choosing the design and style of the toilet, it is important to take into account your own wishes and preferences in the first place, but you cannot neglect the advice of experienced craftsmen and designers. First you need to decide on the general color scheme of the room and decide which panels to buy - having a pattern or plain, glossy or matte, etc. Here it is worth starting from the general design concept in the apartment.

If the toilet has a small area, then it is worth stopping at plain light panels. Although in some cases the drawing can look quite organic and will not steal free space. You can also combine panels of different colors, as well as strips with images or plain colors.

The nautical style, which was at one time popular in bathrooms, bathrooms and toilets, is now far from the only design option for these rooms. Sometimes panels look very cool under a stone or imitating jungle, etc. And sometimes it is worth staying at the black and white classics.

On a note! Wood-like panels do not always look good in a toilet, but a lot will depend on the overall design concept, as well as directly on the shade of the panels itself. Sometimes these toilets turn out to be quite cozy and visually warm.

If you don't have your own ideas, then on the Web you can find a lot of interesting options for decorating the walls of the toilet with panels. Some of them may be to your liking, and it will be quite possible to translate them into your own restroom. If you want to do something unique, but your imagination is tight, then you can take some ready-made version as a basis, after looking at the photos, and bring it to life, slightly modifying or altering it for yourself.

Panels are a great way to decorate a bathroom or toilet beautifully and inexpensively. Moreover, it can look stylish and expensive. The main thing is to choose the right color of the material and to carry out the finishing works themselves with high quality. Several ideas for decorating a toilet with PVC panels can be found in this material above.

When choosing a lining for the walls and ceiling of the toilet, one has to be guided by considerations not only of aesthetics, but also of hygiene: ideally, the coating should be smooth and easy to clean. Accordingly, moisture resistance is also required.

Today, in addition to expensive ceramic tiles, only PVC plastic panels for the toilet meet these requirements.

As for the ceiling, here they are generally the only truly acceptable cladding option. Let's see how the toilet is trimmed with plastic panels (PVC plastic) and how to choose the right material.

Cladding with plastic panels can be done in two ways:

  1. The material is glued to the wall and ceiling like ceramic tiles. In this case, the room almost does not lose in volume, but this method can only be resorted to with perfectly flat surfaces. Tile glue or "liquid nails" are used.
  2. The panels are attached to the frame. A method in demand with uneven walls. The cladding will turn out to be perfectly flat without laborious "wet" processes - plastering, putty, etc. But the volume of the room will decrease more than in the first version.

The toilet is finished with panels

We will consider the option with a wireframe as a more complex one.

Preparation for finishing work

So, there is no need to align the walls and ceiling. However, you still have to do some work in advance. Let's consider them all in order.

Measurements

First of all, you need to find out what and how much you need to purchase to complete the cladding. Let's go through the list:

PVC panels

The amount of the main material is determined quite simply: the area of the walls and ceiling to be finished is calculated, after which a margin of 15% is added to the result obtained. It is imperative to provide for a stock: some of the panels will go to waste when trimming, some of them may be damaged.

Finished repair with plastic panels

It would seem that the missing elements in which case it would be possible to buy in addition, but there is one thing: parts from another batch will most likely have a slightly different shade in comparison with those already acquired. Therefore, everything needs to be bought in one approach in a deliberately sufficient quantity.

Profiles

These are additional elements with which the corners and edges of the trim are formed. There are several varieties:

  1. Starting bar: frames the finish in the place where it adjoins the surface without finishing, and forms an inner corner with it.
  2. Ceiling plinth: this is the same starting bar, only with a more interesting shape. It is used for framing the ceiling cladding.
  3. F-shaped profile: framing the edge of the trim in the place where it adjoins the uncoated surface, and forms an outer corner with it.
  4. Corner: can be external, internal and universal. This detail forms the joint of two lined surfaces.
  5. H-shaped profile: used for extension along the length of short panels.

Fittings for plastic panels

In general, the total length of the ceiling plinth is equal to the perimeter of the toilet ceiling. An internal corner will be needed, the total length is equal to the height of the room, multiplied by 4. Other details should be chosen according to the situation.

Frame details

The frame for the installation of plastic panels is assembled from both specially designed profiles for them and from profiles for installing plasterboard structures. In the first case, structural elements can be made on the profiles, to which the plastic panels snap into place - then they will not need to be screwed on with self-tapping screws.

When assembling the frame, two types of elements are used:

  1. Guide profile (U-shaped): It is screwed along the perimeter of the surface to be trimmed and serves to fasten fittings (starting plate or corner) and intermediate frame profiles.
  2. Rack profile (C-shaped): the very intermediate elements are made from it, which are installed with an equal pitch over the entire surface and to which plastic panels will be screwed.

The required number of rack-mount profiles is taken on the basis that they will be fastened in increments of 50-60 cm.

Hangers

Used for ceiling cladding. The hangers are screwed to the ceiling, after which the intermediate frame profiles are attached to them. It is impossible to screw the profiles directly to the ceiling - there will be no place behind the cladding for the installation of built-in lamps.

Suspensions are installed along each intermediate profile with a step of 45 - 50 cm.

Dowels and screws

  • Dowels. With their help, suspensions and frame profiles are screwed to capital structures. We calculate the quantity based on the installation step of 40 - 50 cm.
  • Self-tapping screws 15 - 20 mm long. With their help, the panels are screwed to the frame. The optimal pitch is indicated by the panel manufacturer.

The choice of material for construction

First of all, you need to know that plastic panels are divided into two types:

  1. Wall: they are characterized by increased strength and cost accordingly.
  2. Ceiling: they are less durable, since it is almost impossible to damage the lining on the ceiling by negligence. They are cheaper than wall ones.

Also, the panels differ in size. In a small room, narrow panels should be used, which are called slats or plastic clapboard. If you do the opposite and use large parts, then the toilet will seem very small and cramped.

The walls of the toilet are finished with PVC

For those who pay special attention to design, the option with the installation of special decorative inserts between the panels will certainly seem interesting.

An important issue is the quality of the panels. Here's what to look out for:

  1. Stiffeners inside the product should be located as often as possible.
  2. The front side must be absolutely smooth. If stiffening ribs are guessed under it, then you have a low-quality material.
  3. The thicker the plastic, the better. Please note: we are not talking about the thickness of the panel as a whole, but about the thickness of all its components - outer sheets and inner ribs. To check, you need to squeeze the panel with two fingers. If the ribs bent at the same time, and there are dents on the surface, it is better to refuse to buy this brand.
  4. Plastic should not be brittle, for which special additives are added to it. Manufacturers of cheap types are striving to save money on such an additive. Peel back the strip at the edge of the panel that is used to snap into the adjacent part. If there is a dent in the bending section, and even more so if the plastic is cracked, it is clearly of poor quality.
  5. Discard material with strong odor immediately. It indicates that plastic is gas, that is, it emits volatile substances that negatively affect health.
  6. The appearance of the panels must be impeccable: the color is uniform, the pattern is clearly printed.

If in any doubt, do not hesitate to ask for a certificate.

Required tools

In addition to the finishing material for work, you need to prepare the following:

  • plumb line;
  • level: it is desirable to have both bubble and water;
  • hammer drill or hammer drill;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • hacksaw or jigsaw;
  • scissors for metal;
  • roulette;
  • roller and brush;
  • spool of nylon threads;

Stock up on a marker or pencil.

Surface preparation for finishing

The purpose of this stage is to prevent the development of mold and mildew on the surfaces hidden under the cladding.

Here's what to do:

  1. The old finish that could be a potential hazard is removed. This concept means any wallpaper, areas of painted surfaces on which the paint has peeled off. If the wallpaper is still holding tight, it must be soaked in warm water (it is convenient to do this with a roller), after which it will be quite easy to remove it.
  2. Next, an antiseptic primer is applied to the surface with a roller.

Plating

How to sheathe (trim) a toilet with plastic panels?

The finish is mounted as follows:

  1. First, the frame is installed. For facing the ceiling on the walls around the entire perimeter, a guide profile is screwed, stepping back from the overlap the required distance. These elements must be in the same horizontal plane, so the markings for them must be applied using a water level.
  2. Next, nylon threads are pulled between the guide profiles to indicate the horizontal plane, and then, guided by them, intermediate profiles are installed on the suspensions.
  3. When decorating a wall, you first need to designate a vertical plane using nylon threads, for which a plumb line is used. Next, the sections of the rack-mount profile are screwed to the wall so that their faces lie in the designated plane. In places where the surface of the wall has deflections, underlays must be installed under the profile.
  4. Next, starting strips (for wall cladding) or ceiling plinths (for the ceiling) are attached to the frame.
  5. Having freed the first plastic panel from the protective film and cut it to length, it is wound on one side under the starting profile and screwed to the frame with self-tapping screws.
  6. The rest of the panels are installed in the same way. Luminaires need to be installed and checked during installation, so that later, if the lighting system is inoperative, you do not have to disassemble the ceiling.
  7. The last panel is also cut in width, after which a starting profile is put on it on one side. The panel must be cut along the length so that it can be inserted with its ends into the starting profiles without bending. Next, the guide profile is lubricated with liquid nails glue, the last panel is installed in place, snapped to the previous one, and the starting profile put on it is glued to the frame guide profile.

Before trimming each panel to the desired length, check the actual size between the profiles at the location where it will be installed.

Video on the topic

The tiled bathroom looks very nice and respectable. But in order to lay it out beautifully, you need to have certain skills in working with such material, and the tile itself will cost a pretty penny. It is possible to carry out high-quality repairs in the toilet at no extra cost and on your own if you use PVC panels instead of tiles.

Peculiarities

To finish the toilet with plastic panels, you do not need to have special construction skills and physical strength. This material has a whole set of other qualities that ensure ease of handling both during installation work and during the operation of finishing from it.

Although plastic panels are not complete without drawbacks.

  • It is a lightweight material that is easy to cut and install. It can be used for both walls and ceilings. PVC panels will hide behind them pipes and other communications that are present in the toilet and often do not look attractive at all, like the "native" uneven walls. But it should be borne in mind that when installed on each side, such a coating "eats" about five centimeters of room space.
  • It is convenient to decorate a room with this material alone, especially since it is very difficult for two builders to turn around in the cramped space of a toilet room.
  • If the panels are installed correctly, they will last a very long time (up to twenty-five years), without requiring special care. They are resistant to chemicals, it is difficult to spoil the coating. It is enough to regularly wipe the PVC walls with a damp cloth so that the toilet does not lose its well-groomed appearance.
  • The panels are resistant to moisture and temperature extremes.
  • When making a choice in favor of decorating a toilet with such panels, it must be borne in mind that this is a material that melts under the influence of fire, giving off acrid smoke.
  • If you hit a plastic wall hard, the panel may break.

Style and design

Thanks to such a wide selection, you can arrange a sanitary room in any style. With the help of panels of different colors, variegated or patterned, a certain visual effect is achieved. So, if you use light panels, it will visually expand the space of the bathroom.

The use of panels with photo printing opens up unlimited scope for design. Entering the toilet, finished with such material, you can find yourself in the atmosphere of an island paradise, among waterfalls, mountains and in any environment that will contribute to peaceful solitude. To create a complete picture, not only the walls, but also the floor and ceiling must be made in a single theme and color scheme. This rule works equally well for the design of a separate toilet and a combined bathroom.

Although no one will forbid to limit ourselves to the fact that the panel covers the wall only up to half or only a quarter, and the other part of the wall was decorated with washable wallpaper or painted with water-based paint of a suitable color.

Dimensions (edit)

Having made a choice in favor of plastic panels, you need to take into account that there is no single standard for the forms of their release. On sale you can find panels with a width of ten to thirty centimeters. Their length can be from two to six meters. The thickness is also different - from eight to twelve millimeters. If the choice is made in favor of sheet panels, then it should be borne in mind that their width is eighty centimeters and reaches two meters. Length from 105 to 405 centimeters.

When calculating the required amount of material, keep in mind that some of it will be spent on trimming. Therefore, it is better to immediately purchase panels with a margin of fifteen percent.

Preparatory work

Before getting to the installation of the panels themselves, you will have to take measurements of the room and buy everything you need for repair: not only panels, but also profiles for decorating external and internal corners, places where plastic adjoins the ceiling and floor, for decorating cabinets and doors provided for your plan. You will need material to create a crate for future panels. You can choose wooden or metal slats. It must be borne in mind that their parameters will determine how much the area of the toilet will decrease after all the work. The number of battens depends on the height and width of the walls, as well as the distance between the sheathing elements themselves. If a riser, pipes and a ceiling frame are hidden under the PVC panels, you need to lay down the material consumption for this when calculating its total amount.

And you may also need dowels and screws. If they are not on the farm, you need to resolve the issue of their availability in advance. Plastic cladding technology also allows the panels to be glued directly onto the walls if they are absolutely flat. With this approach to finishing you will need "liquid nails". If a crate made of wood will act as a support for plastic, you need to purchase a tool for treating a wooden structure from decay. Using a primer for walls and ceilings will prevent mold from appearing under the panels. Insects under it will not divorce either.

In order to properly repair the toilet, you need to carefully prepare its walls for future decorative finishing. Remove wallpaper and paint from them. For work, you need a metal spatula. Wallpaper that does not lag behind the wall can be soaked by rolling it with a wet roller several times. Do not be too lazy to remove the old wallpaper to the end, so that later you do not have to dismantle the plastic panels and carry out repairs again if a fungus starts there.

As for the paint, it is enough to remove only what is already peeling off the wall. The required number of elements of the wooden frame are cut, they are treated with an antiseptic, including the places of the cuts. Then they must be allowed to dry. In an apartment building, a balcony is suitable for this. You can also take the workpieces to the staircase. Until the drying process is complete, you can process the walls and ceiling in the toilet itself.

The primer is applied with a long pile roller. A wide brush is also suitable for business. In uncomfortable areas, it is narrow. It makes sense to apply a couple of layers of soil, especially since it dries quickly. If you decide to renovate the toilet in full - with the replacement of the toilet bowl - it is better to remove the old one before you start performing the crate. If pipes and old electrical wiring require replacement, this issue should also be taken care of a little earlier than it comes to the external design of the room.

Frame

To make a frame for panel cladding yourself, you need to decide in advance how the PVC panels will be placed relative to the wall - vertically or horizontally. When placing the panels vertically, the room will appear taller, and the horizontal arrangement will visually expand it. In this case, the "vertical option" assumes the horizontal placement of the lathing bars and vice versa. When installing rails, you need to be guided by the readings of the building level. Self-tapping screws or dowels are used to fasten the bars to the walls. Using self-tapping screws, you need to drill holes in the walls and insert plastic chops into them.

By the time of work, the bars should dry out well, otherwise they will be driven later, which can ruin the whole business. They are fastened at a distance of about half a meter from each other. In places where cabinets and shelves will be placed, the elements of the crate should be placed "more often" so that the fastening is more reliable. The most common type of toilet finishing is vertical panel mounting. To make a frame for such a finish, you first need to install its side posts. For this, the slats are fixed with self-tapping screws in the corners of the room. In this case, the vertical planks must not touch the surface of the floor and ceiling.

Then the crate is performed. The first block is fixed at a distance of two centimeters from the floor. A rack line is created around the entire perimeter of the room. The same is mounted under the ceiling. In order for the crate to be uniform, after installing the upper and lower strip of the slats, the distance between them is measured with a tape measure and divided in half. Another bar is reinforced in the middle. Each of the resulting sections is also divided into two and the bars are reinforced again at a measured distance. This continues until the distance between the elements of the sheathing is reduced to half a meter.

To build boxes for communications for paneling, they use the same materials as for creating a frame on the walls. The boxes are attached to the floor and walls. You can connect the bars with self-tapping screws. In the process of work, it is necessary to provide places for technological holes, which will provide access to hidden communications when solving everyday issues. As for the frame itself, not only wooden, but also metal guides can be used for its device.

If it is supposed to trim the ceiling of the toilet with plastic, the frame on it is created in the same way as on the walls, only the bars are located more tightly to each other.

Sheathing

In order to make the cladding of the walls of the room with PVC panels with your own hands, you will first have to install the racks on which the decorative strips will hold. When the installation of the frame is completed, you can proceed to the next step, which involves the installation of racks that must be nailed to the crate. The slats need to be cut at an angle of forty-five degrees. You can attach them to the crate with nails or a special stapler at a distance of thirty centimeters from each other.

Plastic panels have grooves and ridges, connecting them together, you can step by step finish the walls, giving them elegance. Decorative plastic elements in the corners and around the doorway will help close and hide the joints of the panels. It is better not to neglect the installation of such design components, otherwise the repair will look incomplete.

After installing the panels along the walls, you need to decorate the box with a decorative layer around the vertical pipe that runs in the toilet. To hide communications from the eyes, the panels will need to be cut to length, and in order to close the inconvenient place to be aesthetically pleasing, in the end, decorative corners will need to be installed where needed. To cover the ceiling of the bathroom with panels, proceed in the same way as in the case of the walls. But in the process of work, you will have to make holes for future lamps and bring out the electrical wires.

In such an important place for an apartment as a toilet, it is not enough to carefully sheathe the walls and bypass all the ledges with decorative panels, giving the room an elegant and well-groomed look. It is necessary to place hooks, niches and shelves in pre-provided places so that the toilet is convenient to use. It is better to designate the places where all this will be fastened during the sheathing - then you will not have to guess where the lathing bars are located.

The options for using panels to create hidden niches and shelves can be very different. It will not be difficult for a person who is able to dispose of furniture fittings to imperceptibly close up with a removable panel what should not be in plain sight. It is possible, for example, to provide a window in the decorative trim, under which the water meter is located, with the ability to close it with a plastic door and can be easily opened only when required.

Decorating a bathroom with plastic panels usually takes no more than two days, and the results can delight you for a long time.

Repair of the "economy" class with decorating the toilet room with plastic is good to use in "Khrushchev". This is the easiest way to hide the old unattractive riser from the eyes, to make the interior of a small room quite modern and cozy thanks to the competent choice of panels: with a pattern or plain colors. For example, red walls in the bathroom may seem too extravagant to some people. Green or blue tones in a company with a pattern, for example, in a nautical style, will surely make the decoration comfortable and relaxing.

When repairing a combined bathroom, especially in an old panel house, you need to carefully consider the issue of ventilation, ensuring free air flow between the cladding and the wall, as well as the cladding and the ceiling. The ventilation grill also needs to be assembled from plastic, providing it with a decent design. When installing the floor in the toilet, you can make a cement screed and lay out a tile covering. It is important that it does not contradict the general color scheme of the renovated interior. If you even want to keep within the minimum amount of costs during the repair, you should carefully consider the choice of the decorative coating itself.

The risk of running into a low-quality product today is very high.

  • For finishing the bathroom, it is better to use panels with additives that increase their flexibility. Material without appropriate additives will be too brittle. Determining how high-quality the panel fell into your hands is not difficult. Good quality plastic can be bent into a ring.
  • Press down on the edge of the garment with two fingers. Stiffeners located inside a high-quality panel cannot deform, and there are no dents on the outside.
  • The docking strip of the lock on the edge should return to its original position when released after being bent. In a poor quality product, this plastic strip may break.
  • Through the top layer of the panel its "insides" should not show through.
  • When choosing a material, use your sense of smell. If the panels are made from low-quality components, they will emit a chemical aroma, which will only become stronger in an enclosed bathroom space. This is not only unpleasant, but also unhealthy.

  • Decent quality PVC panels should contain additives that prevent the material from catching fire. To verify this, request a product certificate from a specialist in the sales area. If the documents for the goods are not provided to you, it is better to go to another store.
  • You should not stop your choice on panels of large width. When it comes to repairs in such a small room as a toilet, this is unprofitable, since there are too many scraps left during installation, which then simply have to be thrown away.
  • Take the time to inspect every panel you purchase. It is not uncommon for sellers to put defective items in a pack of goods. Exchanging them after purchase for a quality product can cost a lot of nerves. We still have to prove that the panels were not damaged during transportation from the store to the house.

The "extra" time spent in the building materials store will be successfully compensated by the easy and quick installation of the toilet panels, as well as the pleasure with which you will be able to visit this secluded place for many years.

Beautiful examples

The variety of colors of plastic panels opens up great opportunities to embody the most interesting design ideas when creating a bathroom interior in accordance with the taste preferences of apartment owners.

Someone considers it worthy to decorate the walls of the toilet room under a stone, someone prefers certain patterns of wood, and someone else prefers abstract patterns that create a feeling of airiness and lightness, or floral ornaments present on the panels.

  • The combination of beige walls with an unusual pattern and a floor decorated in a red "outfit" will make the toilet room visually very warm. In the eyes of people who especially appreciate warmth, such a design will add additional attractiveness to the bathroom. As well as the "neighborhood" of animals and trees on the walls.
  • Connoisseurs of spring and summer will feel comfortable surrounded by walls with a pattern of branches and leaves. Even on a gloomy winter day, such an environment will return spring joy. The light green background helps to tune in to peace and never gets boring.
  • The choice of flashy colors in the design of the toilet is a rather rare phenomenon, but there is no doubt that such a design can make an indelible impression on all visitors to a secluded room. No one will disregard the combination of red and black in a room with a “special purpose”. Elements in the form of red prints on black walls will only enhance the effect, as will the boring lighting of the ceiling, which echoes the design of the floor with white tiles.

  • Decorating the walls of the toilet under a stone would already look quite dignified. However, in combination with the rich dark gray pattern at the bottom of the panels, this room looks especially presentable and rich.
  • The use of black tones in the decoration of the bathroom only at first glance seems to be a risky move. The combination of black walls and white fixtures creates a stylish contrast, making the interior impressive and modern. Energetic and strong-willed people will clearly appreciate this neighborhood.

  • Gray tiles imitating large tiles give the room a detached neutrality and dignified simplicity. The narrow and light horizontally positioned panels behind the toilet visually expand the cramped space. It no longer puts pressure on the person in it psychologically.
  • Soft green plastic panels with a thin, graceful line of drawing around the perimeter of the toilet room look modest, but with dignity. The harmonious design in the room is created without original techniques, but nevertheless makes an excellent impression.

  • If you use panels with vertical stripes in blue-pink tones on some walls of the bathroom, you can achieve a cozy effect, since such a pattern resembles the texture of a fabric. In this environment, you can feel like “under a flannel shirt”, or like “under a warm blanket”. If the same pattern is present on the floor, the effect will be even stronger.
  • In pale-yellow or beige shades of panels, the toilet space looks calm and at the same time lively, especially with the addition of a small floral pattern. Such colors and ornaments are chosen by balanced people who look at the world seriously and practically. If the walls, decorated with beige panels, get dirty, it will be noticeable, but it will not cut the eye. In addition, such a surface can be easily washed off.
