What to do if the airbag light comes on. Did the airbag malfunction icon light up on the prior and the sound signal disappeared? You will have to repair the driver's airbag connector cable

All drivers hate various ones that can warn of breakdowns or malfunctions. One of the most serious warning lights that can come on on the dashboard (besides the one) is the airbag indicator. Usually, many drivers, when they see the airbag icon on the dashboard, start to panic and do not know what to do. Today we will tell you what is the reason for the airbag indicator on the instrument panel, and how you can fix it yourself.

As an example, this article describes how to troubleshoot the cause of the icon on the dashboard that warns of a malfunction of the airbag. All actions were performed on a 2004 Toyota Camry.

Please note that on other vehicles, all operations may be different due to other design features. But in general, there are not many reasons for the appearance of a warning about a malfunction in most cases.

Remember that you must exercise extreme caution when working on airbags. If you are not sure that you can do all the work yourself, then it is better to contact a specialized technical center where professionals will fix the problem.

It is quite simple - it consists of several sensors, a module that interprets the signal received from the sensors and, if necessary, gives a signal to the capsule in which the airbag is stored, as a result of which it works in a fraction of a second. Unfortunately, like everything in the world does not last forever, airbag sensors wear out and become unusable, as a result of which the airbag system may become inoperative. Fortunately, the security system constantly monitors the status and readiness of all airbag sensors and, in the event of a malfunction, informs you on the dashboard.

The most common sensors that often fail in modern vehicles are the seat occupant sensor and the airbag spiral sensor in the steering wheel (airbag coil). The front passenger seat occupancy sensor detects the weight of the passenger to identify the passenger's age.

This is done according to the weight of the passenger. This allows you to automatically deactivate the front airbag if the front seat sits . The fact is that the front airbag is dangerous for small children, because due to their growth, if the front airbag is deployed, its impact can lead to the death of a small passenger.

Unfortunately, the front passenger weight sensor can wear out over time due to frequent seat movement. As a result, either the sensor or the cable may be damaged. Since the airbag control system constantly scans the performance of all sensors, if one of the sensors fails, an icon will light up on the dashboard to warn of a malfunction of the airbag.

Some vehicles have the ability to manually deactivate the front passenger airbag. In this case, the warning about the inoperative airbag will also light up on the dashboard. It is noteworthy that even with the airbag manually deactivated, if an adult sits in the front seat, the airbag will automatically turn on.

Including on some cars, if no one is sitting in the front seat, a warning about the disabled front airbag is also on the dashboard.

If, despite the fact that, the indicator on the dashboard is on, warning that the airbag is disabled, then one of the security system sensors is most likely out of order. To begin with, in this case, check the wiring under the front passenger seat. You need to make sure there are no frayed wires under the seat. If the sensor wiring is damaged or fails, purchase a new front passenger weight sensor.

The second most common airbag problem is the helical airbag sensor, which is located between the steering column or steering wheel. The sensor is integrated with the board, which allows the various buttons on the steering wheel to work. Over time, this component can wear out, resulting in the steering wheel buttons being unable to control various functions, as well as the deactivation of the driver's airbag. To fix the problem you have to remove wheel and replace the defective part.

Before fixing the problem with the airbag sensor in the steering wheel, you must remove the negative terminal of the wire from the battery and wait 10-15 minutes for the capacitors to discharge.

Next, turn the steering wheel, putting the wheels straight. Then find fastener the center of the steering wheel. As a rule, the center part of the steering wheel is attached with a hex bolt, which is unscrewed with a hex wrench. But on some cars, in order to unscrew the central part of the steering wheel, a special key is needed (for example, on Nissan cars).

Then turn the steering wheel to the right and left to unscrew the screws that hold the steering column trim. In order to remember the correct position of the steering wheel, stick adhesive tape or electrical tape as in the photo. This will help you put everything back in its correct place when reassembling.

Next, take the correct size wrench to loosen the center nut that holds the steering wheel to the steering column. Please note that you only need to loosen the nut, and do not unscrew it completely.

Please note that on many vehicles you will not be able to immediately unscrew the central bolt holding the steering wheel easily. In order to unscrew the bolt, you will need to jerk the steering wheel to the right and left several times. Do not unscrew the central nut to the end. Once you have loosened the steering wheel sufficiently, you can, while calmly supporting the steering wheel, unscrew the nut all the way. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column.

Next, disconnect the wire connectors that go to the steering wheel coil cable (airbag coil), which is responsible for the operation of the buttons on the steering wheel and airbag. Next, install the new airbag coil onto the steering column.

Then, after connecting the cables to the spiral coil, set the steering wheel to the position that the pasted tapes of tape or electrical tape will tell you. Next, shade the steering wheel center nut with torque wrench. If you do not have a wrench that measures force, then before installing the central steering wheel nut, add a little sealant to the steering column bolt and, after installing the nut, shade it as much as possible. Use a pry bar for sufficient force.

Now you can install the airbag capsule and connect the power connectors. Next, install the decorative trims, install the negative terminal back on the battery and start the car.

Now, after replacing the sensors, the control signal lamp on the dashboard of the airbag should disappear.

Please note that the airbag icon does not always light up on the dashboard for the reasons that we talked about. But according to statistics, most of the reasons why the airbag indicator on the dashboard lit up are associated with these two sensors.

The thing is that these two sensors are subject to the most rapid wear.

If after replacing two sensors, the warning light on the dashboard does not go out, then most likely you need to reset all errors in the car's electronic system.

However, please note that some airbag system malfunctions require a more thorough and complex diagnosis using professional expensive equipment.

The safety of the driver and passengers in the car is a parameter that is given special attention when developing the car. In the event of a traffic accident, all vehicle systems must work perfectly, including airbags. Their effectiveness has been proven by hundreds of tests and they should function properly when installed in a car.

On the dashboard of cars equipped with airbags, a special indicator is displayed that signals the driver if there are problems with them. When the airbag light comes on, it is better to stop driving the car until the problem is fixed. This article discusses the main reasons why the airbag on the dashboard is on.

Normal operation of the airbag indicator

Many drivers do not pay due attention to the indicators displayed on the dashboard of the car. At the same time, each of them signals the presence or absence of problems in the car. At each start of the engine, you should pay attention to which indicators are on and which are not - this will avoid unwanted problems.

When the engine is started, the airbag light should come on to indicate to the driver that the airbag is working. After that, the system diagnoses all the elements that are responsible for the deployment of the airbag. The system signals the driver about the diagnostics by flashing the light bulb. According to European standards, it is accepted that after 6 flashes of the airbag indicator, it goes out, thereby showing the system is working properly.

Attention: If the airbag indicator does not show any signs of operation when the ignition is turned on, you should not go on a trip. At similar variant both the car's security system and the indicator itself may be faulty (for example, a light bulb has burned out).

If the airbag indicator, on the contrary, is on and does not go out, there may be several reasons for this.

Why is the airbag light on?

The airbag is only an executive part of a number of systems that should ideally work out when the car collides with an obstacle. In particular, the following are responsible for the operation of the airbag: shock sensors, a squib and the "brains" of the car. In addition, when the airbags are triggered, the seat belts must be in good order, as well as the tensioners, the task of which is to keep the driver in place in the event of a collision.

Considering a large number of components that work interrelatedly with airbags, the indicator on the dashboard may light up if any of them malfunction. Do not forget about the need to transmit a signal from one device to another, and if the relationship between them is broken, the airbag light will also signal this.

Below we will look at the most common options for why the airbag light is on.

One of the most common reasons why the airbag light is on is an open circuit. The diagnostic scanner allows you to read the error code from the car, and then determine the specific place where the circuit broke. Most often, this problem occurs after:

Without a diagnostic scanner, it is almost impossible to determine the wiring problem that is causing the airbag light to come on. If any of the signals is missing, the light will turn on and will not go out until the information is transmitted between the elements of the system without errors.

Sensor malfunctions

One more common problem, due to which the airbag lamp lights up, is a malfunction of the sensors. The airbag deployment system depends on two types of sensors:

Such an error as the absence of a signal from the sensors can also be determined using a diagnostic scanner.

Other problems

There are many problems, both mechanical and electrical, that can cause the airbag light to come on. In addition to those listed above, some of the most common faults include:

  • Low battery voltage. To fix the problem, you should check the voltage on the battery, and if it is low, charge the battery or replace it;
  • "Clogged" memory of the control electronic unit. If the airbag has already deployed, and after installing a new one, the memory of the control unit has not been reset, this will cause the airbag indicator to light;
  • The malfunction of the airbag itself is a violation of its tightness;
  • Igniter malfunction, possibly due to exceeding the limit of its operation, which is most often 10 years;
  • Damage to the control unit, both mechanical and software. Most often the problem is with software occurs when updating the ECU firmware or performing chip tuning.

If the airbag light comes on, check the battery first. Next, you should remember the last work that was carried out with the car - it can be repair, washing, replacing elements. If it was not possible to detect the malfunction on your own, you must use a diagnostic scanner that will show the cause of the problem.

One of the main passive safety systems modern car are air bags, which are called AirBag (in literal translation"airbag") or colloquially "airbag". Their main purpose is to soften the impact in a collision. vehicle with another vehicle or a fixed obstacle. For the trouble-free operation of this elastic shell, which is filled with gas in case of danger, there is a specially designed airbag control unit.

General principle of operation

The airbag system consists of three main components:

  • the pillow module itself;
  • airbag sensors;
  • airbag diagnostic unit.

When the airbag sensor detects an impact, it transmits an alarm, the system is triggered, and the airbag fully deploys in thirty to thirty-five milliseconds. Most modern systems equipped with devices that store enough electricity to deploy the airbags even if the main battery is damaged by impact. Any malfunction of the airbag is monitored by a diagnostic unit, which is activated when the car's ignition is turned on. If the scanner detects a malfunction, the airbag light on the instrument panel lights up.

Why is the airbag light on?

Many users are faced with the fact that the airbag light comes on for no apparent reason and does not go out, starting to glow again every time the ignition is turned on. What does this phenomenon indicate?

Normally, this should only happen after the airbags have been deployed, that is, after an emergency has occurred, since the memory of the electronic unit contains information about the collision. In this case, the airbag stays on until the airbags are replaced. If there was no accident, then one of three reasons takes place:

  • malfunction of the pillow itself;
  • problems with contacts (contacts have moved away or oxidized);
  • various kinds of airbag errors.

There can be many errors and failures. For example, when a car is used in turn by two people of different heights and builds, say, a husband and wife, they constantly move it, reinstalling it according to their parameters. This leads to the fact that the contacts go away, and the system detects this violation.

Typical failures include a driver airbag error and a front passenger location sensor error. They often occur when reupholstering the interior, tuning and minor repairs, for example, when removing the steering wheel or reupholstering the seats. The reason that the airbag is constantly on in the car (its light on the instrument panel) may be a malfunction of the sensors, that is, the airbag sensors.

How to fix the airbag error?

At almost every auto forum you can find an actively discussed topic: “The airbag caught fire! What to do?". A lot of advice is given on how to get rid of this scourge, which boil down mainly to flipping the terminals or turning off the airbags. anything to do with air cushions by no means worth it. Firstly, it is not so easy for an ignorant person to get to them. Secondly, how can a driver fix a breakdown if he does not know exactly why the airbag is on fire? Continuing to drive with the warning light on is all the more dangerous. At a critical moment, the airbag will most likely not work, but it can hit the driver in the face at the most unexpected moment.

If the airbag caught fire, then you need to contact a specialized car service equipped with a scanner, with which you can erase errors in the electronic memory of the system, identify problems and malfunctions and fix them. Our experts will determine why the airbag caught fire in your car, perform necessary repairs, that is, recovery appearance and functional properties of the pad, replacement of sensor components or pads themselves. Your life depends on security systems, so they must always be in good condition, and their repair can only be trusted by professionals.

The Airbag system is one of critical systems safety in the car. It is an airbag that, in the event of contact with another vehicle or an obstacle, is filled with gas and protects the driver from injury during an accident. And the Airbag system regulates the whole process. Often, many drivers may be disturbed by the fact that the airbag indicator is on, located on the front of the car's instrument panel. This icon is red, which indicates some kind of problem in the security system.

Why this error occurs and how to fix this problem, we will explain in this article.

The issue of safety in the configuration of any car is, as a rule, in the first place. It is not surprising that designers think through these systems in the first place, paying them increased attention. Now, in every car there is such a system that prevents damage to the driver in the event of emergencies occurring on the roads. The most common such system, today, is the airbag located on the front of the car. There are times when the airbag sensor on the front panel blinks, which can be somewhat puzzling to the driver, who will think that there is an error in the system and you need to immediately respond to this.

However, this is not entirely true. The light comes on every time the vehicle is started, indicating that the system itself is being tested. The airbag lights up, usually for five seconds, and then goes out. If the fact is observed that in the future the light continues to flash on the panel, then this may indicate that an error has occurred in the system.

In general, Airbag is not only one airbag, but a whole range of measures to ensure driving safety. In particular, this system includes seat belts, a shock sensor error, squibs and pretensioners, as well as the manual unit itself, which operates the entire system. It is this block that is responsible for whether the warning light blinks or not.

If, nevertheless, this emergency situation happened, in which the light bulb continues to flicker, many people ask - does this mean that the airbag system will not work in case of an emergency? Of course not. The system remains operational, but there may be times when not all airbags will deploy. Naturally, in no case should this circumstance be ignored, therefore it is important to know not only the methods for fixing the problem, but also the reasons that provoked this error.

Causes of airbag malfunctions

The airbag light, if we are talking about the normal functioning of the security system, flickers only in two cases: immediately after starting the car, when it tests all safety sensors, and during unexpected contact with any obstacles, when the airbag comes into action. The icon on the instrument panel will remain lit until the complete replacement airbags.

In other cases, the flickering of the Airbag sensor will indicate possible malfunctions in the operation of the security system. Here are the main reasons:

  • The airbags are damaged.
  • The car doors are not tightly closed.
  • The connection of the connectors in the security system unit is broken.
  • There are breaks or damage to the wires and contacts that ensure the operation of the security system.
  • The lamp may burn if the fuse is not working correctly.
  • The alarm was not installed according to technical recommendations, or an error was detected in its operation.
  • The installation or replacement of the steering wheel was carried out incorrectly.
  • The security control module has been damaged.
  • If the seats were replaced with new ones, then the integrity of the terminals and connecting wires could be violated.
  • Improper and incorrect repairs.
  • Pillows have exceeded their useful life.
  • Poorly made car tuning.
  • Fluid could get on the contacts of the sensor and the belt.
  • The mains voltage is not enough.
  • An error was made when replacing the battery, or the replacement sequence itself was violated.
  • When cleaning the interior, the terminals were damaged.

The indicator light is flickering - the main errors in this situation

If you find that the security system indicator lamp blinks constantly, although there are no prerequisites for this, then you need to immediately respond to this situation. Of course, you can rely on the Russian "maybe", but then no one can guarantee your safety in the event of emergencies. There is of course a possibility that the icon caught fire for a minor reason that does not affect the operation of the airbags. However, relying on this abstract possibility is still not worth it, because the consequences can be the most deplorable. That is why, you need to know the order of possible actions that eliminate the root cause of this problematic situation.

Autumn often, a person is looking for a solution to a problem on the Internet, or from his good friends. In cases with a flashing security signal lamp, this is also quite common. And the most interesting thing is that the answer is found very quickly, the very essence of which can bring professional car repairmen and experts into a stupor. Most people, for no reason at all, advise to simply turn off these annoying signals and drive calmly, ignoring the “glitch” of the system, in their opinion. It is hardly necessary to say that this is fundamentally wrong and a mistake can cost a lot - this is already clear to every sane person.

How to "turn off" the light bulb correctly?

In general, in this matter you should not rely on the "expert" opinion of your neighbors, various home-grown mechanics and other, to be honest, amateurs. Maybe they understand the device of the car and can change the wheels on their car, but this problem is much more complicated, first of all, from a technical point of view. Therefore, in order for the sensor to work normally in the future and at the same time to turn off the security signal, you need to contact the nearest station Maintenance, where there is all the necessary equipment to identify the root cause of this problem. If the icon lights up, flickers and flashes during the period warranty period vehicle, then you need to contact the dealership where you bought your car directly. All equipment will be replaced free of charge.

If the warranty has expired and the icon starts flashing, then you need to visit the service station, but even here you need to be very careful. Service workers are also different, with different technical training and attitude to their work. It happens that the so-called "master" will determine the problem "by eye", without using an electronic scanner to exact definition causes of incorrect operation of the security system. This negligence can cost you not only wasted money and time, but also an increased risk on the roads. That is why, insist on examining your car only using necessary equipment, despite all the assurances of service workers. The scanner will issue a code error, on the basis of which the cause of the system malfunction is determined.

However, the electronic scanner does not give an absolutely accurate answer about the causes of the breakdown. Most likely, the device will show the area in which this breakdown occurred. Based on this data, the workshop worker checks this problem area and eliminates the causes of errors in the system. You should not understand and climb yourself, because there is a possibility of damaging various contacts, which can affect the safety of your driving. Therefore, you should completely trust the service worker, who will be responsible if the repair is not done properly. The employee, at the end of the work, must give you a check, on the basis of which all claims are made.

In most cases, a permanently flashing security icon will prompt the replacement of certain parts. The workshop employee will carefully examine everything and tell you exactly which parts need to be replaced in order to extinguish the security signal. Naturally, the cost of this replacement will depend on the type of these parts, the number of failed parts and other factors. It can come out quite a "weighty" check.

Cost of replacement parts

Replacing car parts is always a stressful situation for any car enthusiast. It is clear, because the car itself is not quite cheap, and an unplanned replacement of parts can significantly hit the wallet. But the realities are such that it is hardly possible to do without this measure, because a comfortable, and most importantly safe, ride will directly depend on it.

In the case of replacing parts when a problem with the Airbag system is detected, the situation is as follows. Replacing the contact group will cost about two to three thousand rubles, replacing the sensor can be much more expensive - from 5 to 15 thousand rubles. This applies to relatively minor breakdowns in the system. If a more serious problem has occurred, then it may be necessary to replace the airbag kit, which can cost from 15 to 30 thousand rubles. The control unit of the security system can also fail, and the only way out is to replace it with a new one - from 10 to 50 thousand rubles. This unit can be repaired, which will cost about ten thousand rubles, but no one will guarantee that it will last a long time. As a rule, after repair, the service life of the control unit is approximately three months.

Separately, I would like to say about exactly where to purchase the necessary parts. The optimal solution there will be a purchase from the official dealers of your car, who can provide a certificate for products and a receipt, or through specialized online stores that contact directly with spare parts suppliers.

The desire to save money on cheaper analogues of original spare parts may come back to haunt the further use of the car, or a conflict with original parts may come to light, even at the repair stage.

Conclusion

Preventive measures can prevent absolutely any problem, including in the automotive environment. In order not to light up the security system icon, you need to be extremely careful when replacing seats, steering wheels and other components of the car. If the replacement of components involves contact with numerous wires in the system, then you must first disconnect the battery and disconnect the wires.

Each replacement of parts must be carried out with the shutdown of the control unit, which is carried out at the service station.

This measure will avoid many common mistakes during repair work.

Everyone, perhaps, is aware of the purpose of airbags and knows what they are. This invention is directly related to the active safety system and saves many lives every day. With this, everything is clear, and even a schoolboy can tell you about these devices in general terms. Another issue is the airbag indicator. What does it mean if the airbag light comes on? These can be "Airbag SRS", "Airbag" or "SRS" indicators. Not everyone you know can answer this question. But we can. And in this article, we will discuss the problems and solutions associated with this alarm.

The airbag light came on

The first thing that comes to mind when the red Airbag light comes on is that there is some kind of problem with the car. In a nutshell, that's exactly what it is. When the airbag sensor caught fire, then everything is definitely not in order in the system, except that a short circuit did not occur when the engine was started. But we want to reassure you right away: there is no reason for depressive thoughts. Like most car breakdowns, this one can also be repaired.

It is important to understand that when the “SRS” or “Airbag” indicator lights up, the malfunction is hidden in the airbag itself. The Airbag system is very large and combines many different devices. This means that if the corresponding light comes on, then it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive check in the entire system.

In good condition, the Airbag lights up immediately after turning the ignition key to the "ON" position, the system checks the performance of all its elements. When checking the Airbag / SRS, the indicator may begin to blink - this is normal. If no faults are found, the light will flash about six times and turn off until the next engine start.

But if malfunctions are still present, then the indicator will continue to burn. Then a fault code will be stored. In a few seconds, another verification will take place. If no new problems are found, or the ignition has been restarted, the diagnostic module will simply delete the error from the registry, and the light will simply go out.

Why does the airbag light come on?

The cabin security system of the car includes airbags (the number depends on the vehicle configuration), shock sensors, belt tensioners, a control module and squibs. The entire system is wired to each other.

Therefore, the airbag icon is lit in the following cases:

1. One or more pillows are damaged.

2. There is no signal from the elements of the security system.

Interesting! The airbag for two-wheelers deploys in one-tenth of a second, providing better protection than any helmet. The authors of this technology are Swedish designers. The Miracle Pillow is placed inside a waterproof cover that is attached around the driver's neck.

3. Door contacts broken.

4. Impact sensors damaged.

5. Loose contact or damage to part of the wiring that connects the entire system. Frayed or shorted wiring.

6. Connectors are not connected well.

8. Damaged control module. It should only be replaced after the problem has been corrected.

9. Installed incorrectly

10. If the steering wheel was incorrectly replaced, the wires were damaged. You need to do this only according to the instructions.

11. Replaced chairs - damaged passing wires or terminals.

12. When replacing deployed airbags. The system can remember their old position, and the module has made a record of the operation, as in

13. In case of poor-quality repair or replacement of the dashboard, the wires were damaged.

14. High resistance is being applied to the driver's seat cushion.

Good to know! A car moving at a speed of 100 km/h travels about 30 meters per second. Turning the head of a parent driving a car towards children in the passenger seat takes an average of three seconds. And this is already almost a hundred meters, which the car raced "blindly"!

15. Towers life airbags. Usually it is from 8 to 10 years.

16. Tuning was performed by unprofessional specialists who damaged the sensors or broke the wiring.

17. Moisture has got on the contacts or its lock.

18. When cleaning was done in the cabin, the terminals were affected.

19. Insufficient battery voltage. Here it should be replaced.

20. The battery was replaced in the wrong sequence.

How to troubleshoot?

Oddly enough, but the discussion of topics: “The Airbag is on” or “How to turn off the burning airbag lamp?” quite common in many automotive forums. Of course, some may think that there is nothing to pay attention to it, well, it burns and burns for itself, the car is moving. But you can't do that. This is a security system, and if it gives alarm signals, then there is some kind of problem that cannot be postponed, but needs to be addressed. There are also many options for solving these problems in the discussions, but all advisers follow the path “the simpler and faster the better”, leaning towards completely turning off the pillows or using glue.

So, if the airbag sensor in the cabin of your car caught fire, you must immediately take the following measures:

1. First, perform a complete check of the Airbag system when starting the power unit.

3. Repair the failing security element or replace it. Just remember that this should only be done with the battery disconnected. Upgrade your Airbag Modular Memory.

Interesting to know! Airbag in the car comes in working condition in 25 milliseconds on average. And blinking an eye, for example, lasts four times longer.

Many motorists think about the seriousness of a particular problem, which is signaled by the Airbag indicator. Drivers with extensive experience recommend making the most complete diagnosis of the entire outdoor system security. This is due to the fact that the bulb can constantly burn both with a small problem with the terminals, and due to the fact that the pillows were removed after a serious accident in which the car was.

Do not forget also that not only the health and even the life of the driver of the car, but also all the passengers in it depend on the Airbag security system. Therefore, you can not be negligent about the fact that the pillow is burning. It is necessary to regularly diagnose the entire system and immediately correct any problems identified.
