Barbecue is a place for a family vacation in the country. We build a barbecue from bricks with our own hands. How to Build a Brick Garden Barbecue Oven Step by Step Technique for Building a Barbecue Oven

Outdoor recreation with friends is a great opportunity to communicate and get to know each other better. However, it is not always possible to pack up and go for a picnic. What to do in this case? You can create the appropriate conditions in your country house or in a country house. Today, a large number of home craftsmen have built themselves gazebos and other structures for a pleasant pastime. Even if you are a layman, after reading this article, you will be convinced that a built gazebo with a barbecue with your own hands is a very real project that you can implement with your own efforts.

If you want to build a functional and beautiful gazebo with a barbecue, then at the very beginning it is important to take enough time to study the nuances.

  • Seat selection... Given that there will be an open fire on the barbecue, the selected location should be away from gas and power lines. Also, there should be no dense bushes directly near the barbecue that can catch fire. Take into account the fact that smoke and the resulting soot can create discomfort in the house, so position the gazebo so that it is at a sufficient distance from the residential building. Alternatively, you can observe the constancy of the wind, if it blows predominantly in one direction, then you can predict its movement.
  • Foundation... It is important to protect the barbecue and gazebo area from water ingress. Therefore, the foundation must be at a reasonable level from the ground surface. Moreover, the problem of flooding is solved simply by choosing a place for construction on a hill. If this is not possible, you will have to think over a drainage system to remove melt and rainwater. Such measures will significantly extend the operation of the gazebo and the built barbecue.
  • Canopy... It is equally important to protect the oven and the surrounding area from moisture penetration. Therefore, the canopy or roof must be sufficiently reliable and cover the area of the gazebo, especially the place with a barbecue. Otherwise, during precipitation, it will be impossible to cook something on it. Plus, sooner or later, the building will collapse from moisture.
  • A place... Think about what the size of the gazebo will be. There should be enough space not only for installing the necessary furniture, building a stove, but also for the convenient movement of people. Moreover, directly next to the barbecue, for fire safety purposes, there must be enough free space, at least three meters. So, a burning fire and random sparks will not interfere with those who have a rest in the gazebo.
  • Floors... In case of moisture penetration into the gazebo, the floors should be sloped. A slope of up to 2º away from the barbecue is sufficient.

Prepare appropriate blueprints for successful construction. They will allow you to carry out high-quality construction of the gazebo. As a basis or as an idea, you can take the drawings and diagrams at the end of this article, in the "Drawings and diagrams" section. Be sure to consider the individual characteristics of your territory.

You should not adhere to templates, because if somewhere it is appropriate to make an open gazebo with a barbecue, then in some cases only a closed version will be possible.

In the drawing, indicate all the design elements. The more detailed it is, the faster the construction will progress. In some cases, it is prudent to turn to specialists who have experience in the design of such structures.

What should be considered in general when designing:

  • How many people will be in the gazebo.
  • The dimensions of the building.
  • The location of the barbecue, communications and other interior details.
  • The shape and area of the gazebo.
  • Foundation type, etc.
  • Given the structural features, it is important to worry about purchasing durable and reliable materials. The barbecue oven itself is predominantly built from stone or refractory bricks. It is recommended to use refractory tiles or other similar non-combustible materials for the floor.

    Although it is not forbidden to use wood with such construction, it is important to take care of its high-quality protection. Therefore, if wooden elements are used, be careful and prudent.

    If you plan to make a woodpile, then you can build a special compartment from gas blocks. With regard to the construction of a chimney oven, only heat-resistant oven bricks should be used. The construction of the furnace will require the use of metal elements. Cast iron is best suited for these purposes. It is durable, high temperature resistant and safe to use.

    Some people use steel, however, this material is not resistant to heat. The steel will burn out quickly and, worst of all, can get into the food.

    Barbecue - what to build it from

    Usually construction is done with bricks. In this case, you can build a capital structure. However, this will require a strong foundation. As a consequence, this will affect the cost of the construction. But even the high price is nothing compared to the positives:

    • Fire resistance.
    • Durability.
    • Strength.

    Among other things, the construction of a closed brick gazebo will help your rest in the future, since the structure will be protected from frost, rain and other atmospheric precipitation.

    There is also an option for making a forged barbecue. Let's say right away that it will be very difficult to do self-forging. Therefore, in most cases, to perform such work, they turn to the appropriate specialists. Such a structure has a number of positive aspects:

    • A beautiful addition to the summer cottage and to the gazebo itself.
    • An opportunity to develop a unique interior design with forging elements.

    Forged barbecue will last a very long time if covered with special primers and paints.

    In general, there are no restrictions and rules regarding the construction of a gazebo with a barbecue. You can combine different building materials. But most importantly, pursue one common goal - to create a beautiful and cozy place to stay.

    For example, consider the process of building a brick gazebo and barbecue. For such a structure, two types of foundation are suitable: strip and monolithic. To make a strip base along the perimeter, dig a trench about 500 mm deep (the recommended depth is below the level of soil freezing) and up to 300 mm wide. After that, a removable formwork is installed. Reinforcement is placed inside, which is tied with a knitting wire.

    Before starting the manufacture of the foundation, make a markup. To do this, drive pegs into the ground in the corners and pull a string between them.

    When the metal frame is laid in the trench, it remains to fill the foundation. 30 days after pouring, you can start laying the walls.

    Another option for the foundation is monolithic. Such a foundation can be buried and shallow. In our case, the latter option is the most appropriate.

    The process of making a monolithic base is very laborious. Therefore, it is good to have helpers, as the concrete should be poured in one go.

    The first step is to remove the fertile soil layer up to 300 mm deep. The bottom must be reinforced. The foundation can rise up to 120 mm above the ground level. Formwork is installed along the perimeter, after which the concreting process is carried out.

    If you plan to make a closed gazebo or build full-fledged brick walls on some sides, then you can combine these two technologies. Pour the strip foundation along the perimeter up to 300 mm wide, and the inner part is poured with a monolith.

    First of all, the fertile soil layer is removed. Then you go deep into the ground to a depth of 300 mm. Next, fill the bottom with a layer of sand 70 mm thick and crushed stone, respectively. Lightly dampen the sand before tamping. Also compact the crushed stone thoroughly.

    The next step is to install the formwork. Here you already set the foundation height you need. On top of the crushed stone, lay a reinforcing mesh. Finally, the entire area is filled with concrete. Necessarily concrete is carefully leveled by the rule.

    After 10 days, dismantle the formwork. The edges of the foundation should be treated with a waterproofing material such as liquid rubber or bitumen. After that, pour crushed stone along the perimeter from the outside of the base.

    Wall masonry can be started after 30 days. During this period, the concrete acquires sufficient strength. Bricklaying can be done for joining. In this case, you do not need to perform facing work.

    In this article, you will learn about the intricacies of bricklaying "Bricklaying technology".

    According to the project, during the masonry process, you leave space for the installation of doors and windows. After completing the masonry from above, it is recommended to fill in a small armored belt for installing the roof.

    A layer of roofing material is laid on top of the foundation, on which the first row of masonry will be laid. It is recommended to first lay out the brick around the perimeter of the oven in a dry, without mortar. This will allow you to make the necessary calculations.

    In the process of laying, be sure to use a plumb line or level. So, you can build a barbecue with flat walls.

    Please note that fireclay bricks should be used for laying the firebox and chimney.

    The first 8 rows do not differ in any way in laying. The main thing is to maintain the shape of the barbecue. It is equally important to perform high-quality dressing of the sutures.

    As for the masonry of the ninth row, it is important to make a small cut of the brick in the inside of the working sections. See the photo below for more details. These cut are needed to make an arch.

    You can cut a brick with a grinder, on which a circle is attached to a stone.

    Next, you should start laying the arch using Sh-47 fireclay bricks. It's good if you have a template made. It will be much easier to make an arch along it. To cover the central niche of the barbecue, a metal corner is laid.

    Lay out the tenth row a little with a shift forward. On the eleventh row, grind bricks in order to overlap the side parts of the arch. As indicated in the diagram, then put a metal corner.

    The twelfth row should completely cover the surface. Do not forget that the firebox is laid out with fireclay bricks. In the diagram, fireclay brick is indicated in yellow.

    The sides of the surface can be tiled, granite or simply fixed to a wooden countertop.

    After that, the base of the firebox is laid out. Cover the outer sides with ordinary brick.

    But a small gap should be left between ordinary and fireclay bricks. It is necessary to put basalt cardboard in it. This will allow the brick to expand as it heats up. The presence of this gap will not disturb, much less destroy the barbecue structure.

    The subsequent fifteenth and sixteenth rows are identical. Raise the firebox upwards with the obligatory dressing. You also leave a gap between the bricks and lay the canvas.

    On the sixteenth row from the inside, make small cuts. A grill with a barbecue will later lie on them. Now you can again make a template for the arch, as indicated further in the diagram.

    For ease of laying the arch, use a wedge-shaped fireclay brick.

    Up to the nineteenth row, lay the firebox, and from the twentieth row, you should begin to narrow it.

    So, gradually the masonry narrows and the chimney part of the stove is formed. As a result, the passage of the pipe should be reduced to the size of one whole brick, see the figure below:

    The last step will be the formation of the pipe. The height depends on the height of the gazebo.

    According to this scheme, a gazebo with a barbecue is being built. In the future, it remains to carry out the necessary communications, as well as install the appropriate furniture. We examined with you the subtleties of how to do all the stages according to the existing technology. If you have personal experience in the construction of such a structure, then leave feedback and comments on this article.

    Schemes and drawings

    The diagrams show various options for building a gazebo with a barbecue:

    To make an outdoor oven in the country - a barbecue is capable of any home craftsman who knows how to work with bricks. The purpose of this article is to help the homeowner build a garden stove correctly with his own hands, using a ready-made project with orders. For convenience, we present some drawings and examples of masonry.

    We build a barbecue complex with a hob

    For the construction of an outdoor oven at a summer cottage, we propose to implement the project shown in the photo. Let's list the technical features of the structure:

    • 2 workplaces that can function at the same time - brazier and hob;
    • overall dimensions in the plan - 1660 x 1020 mm, height - 3220 mm (including the chimney with a head);
    • collection of flue gases from both fireboxes is organized in one pipe;
    • the design is simplified as much as possible - instead of the arched arch of the firebox used in, a direct overlap on a metal frame is provided;
    • under the barbecue there is a niche for storing and drying firewood;
    • the chimney is equipped with a closed brick head, which excludes the ingress of precipitation into the flue.

    Note. The scheme can be changed at the request of the homeowner. For example, instead of a stove, provide for the installation of a cauldron, and adapt the brazier for a grill. Curbstones for placing dishes or a smokehouse must be attached separately.

    At first glance, the design of a universal barbecue stove seems complicated, but in reality it is quite simple to perform. It is better to place the structure under a canopy or inside, so that the masonry is not washed by rains and stood longer.

    Before starting construction on the veranda, it is necessary to provide a platform measuring 176 x 112 cm (a margin of 50 mm on each side of the furnace body). Take care that the chimney does not line up with the supporting roof beams, otherwise the roof will have to be remodeled.

    Building materials

    To fold a complex do-it-yourself barbecue oven, shown in section in the drawing, you will need to buy the following set of materials:

    • clay bricks of standard sizes - 720 pcs. (corpulent is recommended);
    • fireclay stone brand ША-8 for firebox masonry - 80 pcs .;

    • loading door 25 x 21 cm, ash pan - 25 x 14 cm;
    • cleaning doors 13 x 13 cm - 3 pcs.;
    • equal angles 40 x 4 mm, 4 studs with M12 thread and nuts (length - 70 cm) for assembling the floor frame;
    • cast iron panel for 2 burners 71 x 41 cm;
    • sheets of basalt cardboard and roofing material;
    • reinforcement of a periodic profile Ø 12-16 mm in the basement.

    Note. The number of bricks is indicated taking into account the construction of the chimney and the head.

    Sectional oven diagrams

    For fireclay masonry, you should purchase a special refractory clay or mortar. The furnace body is laid out on a clay-sand mortar with the addition of M400 cement. Crushed stone, sand and Portland cement will be used for the foundation. How much building materials are needed depends on the stability of the soil and the depth of the laying.

    We lay a reinforced concrete base

    Since the weight of the structure exceeds 1 ton, it cannot be built on the ground or on a cement screed. A reliable foundation is required, spaced 5-10 cm from the base of the veranda. A foundation pit is dug for construction, whose depth depends on the occurrence of dense soil horizons. As a rule, it does not exceed 1 m.

    Reference. In soils subject to the forces of frost heaving, it is necessary to arrange a pile-screw foundation, connected by metal beams or a concrete grillage.

    Step by step, the technology for laying the base looks like this:

    1. Mark and dig a hole 1760 x 1120 mm, tamp the bottom with a vibrating plate or manually. Fill in a 0.1 m thick sand cushion and re-compact.
    2. Fill the pit to ground level with rubble - fragments of stones, bricks and other solid construction waste, excluding wood. Fill the voids with a slurry of clay and water, let it freeze.
    3. Make a reinforcing mesh by tying the rods at an interval of 10-15 cm. Install it on top of the backing, lifting it 3-5 cm using the supports so that the rods are in the thickness of the concrete.
    4. Make a homemade formwork with 20 cm high planks.

    The last stage of pouring is the preparation of concrete grade 150 and placing the mixture in the formwork. The proportions of bulk materials - 3 parts of sand + 5 parts of crushed stone per 1 measure of M400 Portland cement. Bring the upper plane of the monolith to a horizontal level and leave to harden for 4 weeks. It is recommended to remove the formwork after 7-10 days.

    It is advisable to place a layer of roofing material under the reinforced concrete slab for the purpose of waterproofing, as shown in the diagram. Then the monolith will not be saturated with moisture from the soil. More information about laying furnace foundations is described in the video:

    Preparation for construction

    To begin with, cover the hardened concrete slab with 2 layers of roofing material in order to provide waterproofing of the brick structure. Collect the standard set of stove-top tools shown in the photo: trowels, brushes, measuring devices, and so on.

    Mortar for a yard oven - you can do a barbecue yourself or buy a ready-made building mixture. In the first case, proceed in this order:

    1. Soak the clay, as cleaned as possible from the earth, in a trough with water for 1-2 days.
    2. Pass the earthen solution through a sieve, separating pebbles and crushing lumps.
    3. Sift sand and stir with liquid clay in a ratio of about 1: 1.
    4. Before laying, add 200-300 grams of cement per bucket.

    The finished solution should not stick very much to the trowel, and when squeezed by hand, give a minimum of cracks. For the best properties, experiment with the proportions of sand and clay.

    Note. The mortar for bonding refractory bricks is prepared according to the instructions on the package (bag).

    Masonry instructions

    For the construction of a brick oven - grill, we suggest using step-by-step instructions, accompanied by a photo and orders:

    Guided by the example of ordering, lay out the chimney with the head closed on top. The height of the pipe can be adjusted by decreasing or increasing the number of identical levels from the 28th to the 38th tier. The course of laying this barbecue design - barbecue is discussed in detail in the video:

    Advice. If you want to expand the functionality of the structure, simply add additional elements to the sides of the furnace. The laying of the back wall can be continued to the sides using any red brick.

    When finished, let the stove dry for 2-4 days, depending on the weather. Then test fire both chambers of the barbecue using a small amount of wood.

    How to properly lay oven bricks

    To successfully fold down a workable outdoor stove, be sure to observe the following masonry rules:

    Remove the solution protruding outward with a trowel, and wipe the inner surfaces with a damp cloth. If you lack experience, do not try to chop stones with a pickaxe, it is better to use a grinder with a cutting wheel for concrete.

    In conclusion - the simplest options for stoves

    We deliberately suggested building a serious garden barbecue complex right away, since the multifunctional oven is of greater interest to users. If you manage to lay a similar brazier out of brick, then the extension of bedside tables, a smokehouse and even the construction of a fireplace will not be a big problem.

    Instead of a capital structure, you can make a simple structure shown in the photo. No mortar is required here, and no foundation is needed either: just buy a ready-made barbecue mesh and lay out a brick cabinet according to its size. To prevent the building from collapsing, select a flat, solid area.

    The simplest grill with a smoke collector is built in the form of two retaining walls on a cement-sand mortar. For the installation of the brazier, a reinforced concrete slab is cast (or a ready-made one is used). An alternative option is to tie the brick walls with a frame from the corners. The smoke collection umbrella is made of ordinary roofing steel.

    Before proceeding with the construction of a brick barbecue with your own hands, you should make drawings and calculate with their help the amount of necessary building materials. In this case, the scheme must be created independently, since there are no universal barbecue designs.

    Drawing up an action plan

    During construction, you must follow the general guidelines that apply to all types of barbecue:

    1. the grill should be at least 70-80 cm, taking into account the growth of the owner;
    2. the stove is traditionally located 10 cm below the grill level;
    3. a niche for firewood and cabinets, a hook for tongs should be provided.

    In this case, it is necessary to take into account all the small details so that later it is convenient to use the structure. When the drawings are ready, you should make a calculation, draw up an action plan and prepare a list of building materials (including for the foundation).

    The list of materials for the main work should contain:

    • fireclay and facing bricks;
    • clay and ordinary mortar;
    • metal bar d-30 mm;
    • steel sheet 5 mm;
    • doors for the firebox and blower;
    • grate.

    And for arranging the base:

    • building mixture;
    • reinforcing bars;
    • boards for the construction of formwork;
    • crushed stone and sand.

    The construction of the furnace takes place on a slab base, the frame is erected from fireclay bricks. Then he is faced with a stone. Granite, sandstone, dolomite, rubble stone are suitable. You can show your imagination and give the fireplace any fancy shape.

    Why brick?

    Very often, barbecues and barbecues for a summer residence are created from scrap materials: barrels and, a little less often, you can see welded structures (from the simplest to artistic casting). Much less often they make a barbecue from bricks with their own hands. Many are convinced that they are practically no different from portable designs.

    But the heat distribution scheme in brick structures is completely different. The heat from the coals in open barbecues is directed upward, making only one side of the meat heat-treated. Therefore, during processing, it is necessary to periodically turn the product to the other side to ensure its even frying.

    The brick structure of the barbecue acts like an oven, only without a door. Heat, reflected from its inner surface, acts simultaneously on the entire surface of the product, ensuring its uniform processing.

    This significantly improves the taste of the dishes, making them more juicy and tender.

    In this regard, the following advantages of a brick barbecue compared to a metal barbecue can be noted:

    1. uniform processing of food;
    2. the ability to build complex structures with an additional hob, smokehouse, grill and sink;
    3. barbecue can be made one of the most attractive parts of the site.

    How to make a garden barbecue

    Like any other structure, a barbecue for a summer residence is being built on a foundation. The pavilion must harmoniously fit into the design of the site. Since such a pavilion is to be used all year round, it is better to build a garden type of hearth.

    The fireplace device must comply with the basics of safety, a pipe should be brought out to the roof. The construction of such a structure has a rather complicated technology. Externally and functionally, it is a fireplace that is used to decorate the interior of a summer cottage.

    Thematic material:

    A gazebo or a pavilion with a fireplace can be stylized as a fabulous hut for receiving guests, or equipped as a summer house with kitchen utensils, dining furniture, a sofa and a TV. If the barbecue is located in a pavilion, it is better to entrust its construction to specialists, but if you have a little experience, you can try to build it yourself.

    The basis of the elementary construction of a barbecue is a quadrangular frame, coal is placed in it, over which a grate is placed. It is advisable to make such a structure as a fireplace multifunctional: at the bottom, build a firebox, above it - a crockery shelf, above - the barbecue itself, and a smokehouse can be located above it.

    In this case, the building will be multi-storey. It is necessary to decide what should be the design of the future fireplace for a summer residence, and then make drawings, and outline a construction plan.

    Barbecue options

    Considering brick barbecue projects, sometimes there is a desire to supplement the drawings with their own elements in accordance with personal preferences. Some future owners, when building a brick barbecue with their own hands, equip it with an additional barbecue and stove.

    Barbecues can be quite varied:

    • barbecue fireplace;
    • barbecue grill;
    • multifunctional building;
    • barbecue with one hearth;
    • barbecue with barbecue and cauldron;

    Additional accessories for such ovens are very diverse. For example, oven, spit, tandoor, cauldron and others. Among the complex structures are hand-made and prefabricated.

    An interesting idea is the complex. Stationary structures can be built as a three-story structure. Semi-finished products are placed in the chamber on grates or suspended. For cold smoking, a brazier with coals and a baking sheet with chips are placed inside the chamber, and for hot smoking, logs of the corresponding types of wood are placed in the firebox.

    Such a smokehouse has only one drawback: it strongly absorbs odors. Therefore, if you process the meat after the fish, then it will acquire a specific smell, and sometimes even a smack. In this case, it is better to make this device out of iron.

    Building a brick barbecue

    The positive aspects of installing a barbecue oven lie in its decorative appearance and functionality. It is better to install such a structure not outdoors, but in a pavilion or summer kitchen.

    Consider a step-by-step plan for building a barbecue for a summer residence.

    Step 1: Arrangement of the foundation

    Initially, a place for the construction is selected. When placing a barbecue in a facility, it is necessary to prepare a foundation for it. Together with it, a base is made for a barbecue oven, it is similar to a slab foundation.

    The pit is made 0.3 m larger than the dimensions of the structure, and about a meter deep. The formwork is installed and a sand-gravel "cushion" is laid on its bottom. It is covered with the first layer of mortar (0.2 m), and then steel rods are laid like a lattice. From the end of the pouring to the complete solidification of the solution, 1-3 weeks should pass.

    Step 2: preparation

    Before starting construction, you should choose building materials for construction. It should be remembered that for the construction of a furnace, two types of bricks are needed: the main refractory brick and for cladding. At the same time, only fireclay bricks, resistant to high temperatures, are laid in the firebox area, which also has excellent heat-saving qualities and long-term heat transfer. And as an exterior finish, a standard refractory brick grade is permissible.

    Step 3: erection

    In the construction of the structure, an ordering scheme is used (see below). It takes into account the usual brick sizes - 230 * 114 * 65. For a firebox and a stove, laying bricks should be carried out only on clay mortar, and in places that are not in direct contact with fire, the usual one is allowed for use.

    For pre-mixed fireclay mortar, red clay, cement, sand and water are required.

    Step 4: Firing

    After the construction of the stove, firewood or coal is laid in the firebox and brazier, and then set on fire. This is necessary for firing the inner surface of the furnace walls. The heat is brought to the maximum possible.

    This is one of the most functional summer cottages. For small areas, a simplified scheme is suitable. When choosing the type of garden barbecue, one must take into account all its parameters: functionality, size, location in the summer cottage. For the convenience and durability of the structure, it will be advisable to build a gazebo or pavilion.

    Step 5: drying

    After heating the oven, drying is the next step. It should be carried out in the summer with clear weather - at least 5 days, and in autumn with cloudy - up to 20 days. In this case, it should be covered with a protective film against possible rain.

    The final stage will be decorating the stove. It is necessary to free the bricks from excess mortar, apply paint in the right places to highlight the seams. After that, the barbecue oven is completely ready for use as intended.

    Outdoor recreation in a country house or dacha is not complete without cooking in the open heat. You won't surprise anyone with banal kebabs or baked vegetables, but you can cook real pilaf or other complex dish in such conditions only on a special brazier. This is a barbecue oven, the design of which provides for the installation of a cauldron.

    The general device of a barbecue oven with a cauldron and a sink

    A barbecue oven is a capital structure for cooking various dishes on the heat of hot coals. The peculiarity of this installation is that the cooking process is carried out on a metal grate without an open flame, and the brazier is not covered with a lid.

    In a terminological aspect, the term "barbecue" means a method of roasting meat or vegetable products over embers at a temperature in the range of 100-130 ° C.

    For the convenience of cooking, such devices are modernized by attaching additional compartments and installations to them. The design has gained great popularity, combining a barbecue oven, a brazier with the possibility of installing a cauldron, as well as an extension with a sink. It should be noted that it is easy to turn the brazier into an ordinary stove, if you remove the cauldron, and put cast iron rings of different sizes on the hole, forming a solid surface.

    A capital barbecue oven has many positive and several negative qualities.

    Table: advantages and disadvantages of a barbecue oven

    prosMinuses
    • reliability and durability of the structure;
    • fire safety, since no open flame is used in the cooking process;
    • special taste of cooked dishes, moreover, the crispy crust retains natural moisture in the products;
    • external attractiveness, thanks to which it will become an adornment of any site;
    • the ability to build a shed or a gazebo over it, so that the pouring rain will not interfere with cooking and communicating with friends;
    • individuality of design, showing creative thinking, you can build a structure according to your own project;
    • the ability to use different cooking techniques;
    • a diverse structure, which depends on its own capabilities and the size of the building area; for its construction, many structures have been developed, both small-sized and modernized with various installations and devices, forming whole complexes for the preparation of various dishes.
    • the need to allocate a large site for construction, and not every place on the territory is suitable;
    • inability to move;
    • the need to install a capital foundation;
    • the need for the availability of not only brickwork skills for its construction, but also experience in stove business;
    • high price.

    Preparation for construction: drawings and optimal dimensions

    The construction of a barbecue oven should be preceded by preparatory measures for choosing a place of construction, drawing up drawings and diagrams.

    When choosing a site for construction, you need to be guided by the following rules:

    1. There must be a distance of at least 5 m between the furnace complex and the residential building.
    2. Access to the kitchen should not be too far from the structure. They can be positioned under one roof if required.
    3. The building should be located away from the neighbors' residential building, as smells and smoke can irritate them.
    4. The solution of all construction issues should be entrusted to specialists.
    5. Before building, it is necessary to conduct a study of the soil, and, in accordance with its quality, select the appropriate type of base.

    The size of the future barbecue oven plays an important role.

    If the surface with a sink, a barbecue grill or a cauldron is placed too low, then after a while the back will get tired, and if the work surfaces are too high during the cooking process, burns cannot be avoided.

    To find a middle ground, you should adhere to the rule - the optimal height of the working surface of the barbecue oven should be slightly below the level of the cook's elbows.

    If the width of the selected area does not allow making a wide structure, then this optimal parameter can be considered a value of 240-250 cm. Such a furnace complex will be compact and convenient. The width of the brazier should be 63–65 cm.

    The size of the furnace for the cauldron will be 3.5 bricks on each side, which corresponds to 87 cm.

    Selection of material, calculation of the required amount

    Various materials are used to build barbecue ovens, including brick, metal, stone and clay.

    From the latter, you can make a monolithic structure.

    Clay has been used in ancient pottery. The first historical mentions of such structures were found in the III millennium BC. Nowadays, this type of oven is rarely used. To make it, you need a special breed of oily clay.

    Stone barbecue stoves are more common, but they are not widely popular, since rubble stone, sandstone and limestone are required for their construction. The inconvenience of this material lies in its different form, which is why each element has to be carefully selected to each other.

    Furnace complexes made of metal are widely used at the present time, due to the relative cheapness of the material and the simplicity of its processing. A large number of ready-made structures are on sale. At home, such structures are made of compact sizes.... For this, steel sheets or pipes with a thickness of at least 5 mm are used. A popular option is to use old propane cylinders. The wall thickness and dimensions of these containers are suitable for the manufacture of such structures.

    The most convenient, high-quality and durable material for the stove is brick. It has standard sizes and shapes.

    It should be noted that not all types of bricks are suitable for the construction of a barbecue oven.... For example, silicate cannot be used. For braziers, ovens and other structures operating in high temperature conditions, fire-resistant red and chamotte material is used. The combustion chamber is lined with only the second type.

    In addition to the main building material, you will need:

    1. Concrete mix for laying the foundation.
    2. Planks or plywood boards for the manufacture of formwork.
    3. Reinforcement bars for the construction of a metal frame that reinforces a concrete base.
    4. Sand and gravel for the foundation.
    5. Wire, plastic clamps or a welding machine to secure all connections to the reinforcement structure.
    6. Waterproofing material for the foundation. For this, thick polyethylene or roofing material is usually used.
    7. Metal sink, mixer, drain devices, rubber hose.
    8. Metal corners for installing worktops with a sink, fasteners for a barbecue grill and other elements of the oven structure.

    All these materials require careful calculations.

    Bricks, clay mortar

    To build a barbecue oven, you will need 810-820 refractory red, as well as 30-35 chamotte. The thickness of the seams between them is 3-5 mm.

    Concrete, sand, gravel

    Since the barbecue oven will combine several working areas, its design will take up a large area of land. For this complex to be stable, it is necessary to make a capital base. A slab foundation is suitable as such.

    To calculate the exact amount of concrete, you need to know the total volume of the base. To do this, you need to use a special geometric formula. Since the foundation will be made in the form of a flattened parallelepiped with the size of 270x100x20 cm, the volume of the concrete mixture must be calculated using the formula V = h³, where h is the length of the side of the figure. For example, it will look like this: 2.7 ∙ 1.0 ∙ 0.2 = 0.54 m³.

    Using the same formula, the volume of sand and gravel is calculated. For the base, a layer of each material with a thickness of 10 cm is required. From this it follows that sand is required: 2.7 ∙ 1.0 ∙ 0.1 = 0.27 m³. This is the same value for gravel.

    Armature

    To prevent the foundation from cracking under the weight of the furnace, it is necessary to strengthen it. This requires a metal frame. For its manufacture, reinforcing bars with a thickness of 12 mm are used. The metal structure is a three-dimensional frame in the form of two lattices, which are interconnected by pieces of reinforcement 15 cm long.The size of each cell in the frame is 10x10 cm.

    It is more convenient to calculate this material in running meters. To do this, it is necessary to determine the total length of the entire reinforcement for the frame. To do this, you must first calculate the number of rods located along the length of the frame, then along the width and between the gratings.

    The rods are calculated along the length of the structure. The length of each of them is 95 cm. It is necessary to determine how many rods will fit along the length of the foundation, if the distance between each of them is 10 cm. This requires 270: 10 = 27 pieces. It is necessary to add one more rod, since from the other edge of the frame it will close the structure... To find out how much it is in running meters, you need 27 ∙ 0.95 = 26.6 m.

    The same calculation principle is used to calculate the amount of reinforcement for the width of the base. For this, 100: 10 = 10 pieces, in running meters it will be: 2.7 ∙ 10 = 27 m.

    It is necessary to add these values to obtain the total parameter for one lattice: 26.6 + 27 = 53.6 m.

    Since the design provides for two gratings, then 53.6 ∙ 2 = 107.2 running meters.

    Now you need to calculate the number of reinforcing elements connecting the two parts of the frame. These rods are located along the perimeter (at the intersection of each bar), as well as inside the structure, at a distance of 90 cm from each other in rows.

    From the previous calculations, the number of rods along the width and length of the frame is known: 28 + 10 = 38 m. This value must be doubled, since the elements are located along the perimeter of the structure: 38 ∙ 2 = 76 pieces. Inside the frame there are two more rows of 10 pieces each, so 76 + 20 = 96 pieces. It is easy to determine this value in running meters: 96 ∙ 0.15 = 14.4 running meters.

    Waterproofing for foundations

    To calculate the required amount of waterproofing material, you need to find the base area. The area of this figure is determined by the following formula: S = a ∙ b, where a is the width, b is the length of the rectangle. Substitute the values: 2.7 ∙ 1.0 = 2.7 m².

    Step-by-step instructions for making a barbecue oven with a cauldron

    When a place for construction is selected and prepared, drawings and diagrams of the future structure are drawn up, and the necessary materials are purchased, you can proceed to the direct construction of a barbecue oven. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. In the selected area, make markings for the foundation of the future furnace. For this, you can use cords and stakes.
    2. In accordance with the markings, dig a pit 35 cm deep. Its bottom must be leveled and tamped.
    3. Pour sand inside the pit so that a uniform layer 10 cm thick is obtained. The material will be better compressed if it is wetted.
    4. Pour the same layer of gravel on top.
    5. Make formwork from edged boards or thick plywood. Its height must be at least 25 cm so that the level of the poured concrete does not reach the upper edge of the side.
    6. Install the formwork on the bottom of the pit parallel to its walls.
    7. From reinforcing rods 12 mm thick, make a volumetric frame with 10x10 cm cells. The structure should not touch the bottom, therefore, put wooden blocks or fragments of bricks under it in a checkerboard pattern.
    8. Pour concrete mixture. For the foundation, use cement grade M 250. The reinforcement frame must completely disappear under the grout.
    9. Cover the foundation with waterproofing material. To do this, use roofing material or thick polyethylene. This is necessary so that the moisture inside the concrete evaporates evenly. If the foundation is left unopened, the top layer will dry quickly. In the future, this is fraught with the fact that the base will crack. The concrete mixture will harden in 4–5 days. The first two days you need to open the waterproofing and water the base with water every 10-12 hours. Polyethylene or roofing felt does not allow moisture to evaporate quickly. This is the uniform hardening of the slab foundation.
    10. When the base dries, it must be covered with a layer of roofing material or other waterproofing material, and only lay a brick on it. The first 6-7 rows are not bonded with cement mortar.
    11. The order of the barbecue oven must be done in accordance with the diagram. Each subsequent row must be shifted relative to the previous one in a checkerboard pattern. This method has a name - half-brick masonry. This ensures a reliable bond of the material.
    12. Fireclay bricks must be used for the combustion chamber. It can withstand temperatures over 1600 ° C. Check each row for vertical and horizontal using a building level, a square and a plumb line.
    13. Form places for ash pans and doors.
    14. For a cauldron, it is necessary to make a combustion chamber in the form of a straight cylinder or a cylinder tapering upwards. This part of the furnace is made of fireclay bricks.
    15. The construction of the chimney can be started only after the mortar in the masonry has completely hardened. The pipe can be erected not only from bricks. For this, metal is often used.
    16. Install the mixer and sink. Connect the water supply hoses.
    17. After the mortar has completely dried and the furnace structure has shrunk, you can start finishing it. For this, you can use stone, brick, tiles or whitewash.
    18. The finishing material must be fixed to the prepared base. To do this, you must first plaster the surface using a mounting mesh with a mesh size of 10x10 mm.
    19. If you have chosen a whitewash, then you need to use one that does not get dirty. For this, slaked carbide or lime salt is suitable.
    20. For finishing with stones and tiles, it is enough to clean the surface from dust and use ready-made adhesive mixtures.

    Nuances of use

    In order for the barbecue oven and its working elements to please you for a long time, you need to use it correctly:

    1. The heat will be even if you remove the old ash first.
    2. Smoke from residues under the ashtray from previous preparations can spoil the taste of the dish.
    3. Before use, a new cast-iron cauldron must be greased with sunflower oil, and then heated on the stove for 20 minutes. Add oil if necessary. After the specified time, leave the cauldron to dry, then drain the remaining oil. Wipe the inside with a dry cloth. It is now ready to use. Each subsequent dish prepared in it will be tastier.
    4. It will be more comfortable to use such a stove if the floors in front of it are laid out with stone, and a canopy or roof is made over the brazier.

    You can build a barbecue oven with your own hands, if you strictly follow the instructions and treat this process responsibly. This design will serve you for a long time and will fully meet your expectations.

    It is good if there is a metal brazier on the personal plot, but not only practicality is important for a person, but also beauty. Functionality and attractive appearance - this is a brick barbecue. They exist as simple models that do not require special skills to make, and there are very complex structures - real brick complexes that only a professional can make. It is better not to undertake the construction of such structures without experience, and everyone can try to lay down a simple brazier made of brick or a barbecue oven.

    What is the difference between a grill, fireplace, oven and barbecue

    By the fireplace, stove and barbecue, there is a brick wall at the back of the brazier, which the grill does not have. It is necessary to keep the heat and to reflect it on the fried food.

    In the design of the fireplace, stove and barbecue, the construction of a chimney is provided, which allows the heated air and smoke to be removed away from the cook, the grill does not have this element.

    In fireplaces and stoves, the heat is located in the firebox, in the grill device there is a metal pan for this.

    The heat near the grill, fireplace and barbecue is maintained only when the fuel is burning, and the stove can remain warm for a long time.

    Barbecues and ovens combine the function of a heating device with cooking, a grill is needed only for cooking, and a fireplace is only a heating device.

    What tools and materials will be required to build a brick barbecue:

    Preparing the masonry mix

    For brick construction, you need to choose high-quality mortars. You can use 2 options for such solutions:

    • ready-made compositions (separate mixtures for walls and furnaces);
    • clay mixed with clean sand.

    Such compositions have their disadvantages and advantages, they need to be understood in detail. Previously, only clay was used in the construction of furnaces, but it has a serious drawback. Heating structures built on clay mortar must be well protected from moisture. It cannot be used for laying bricks on a pipe; in such places, mixtures based on cement or lime are used. In recent years, refractory compounds have become available and are sold dry at home improvement stores. They go to work after dilution with water.

    Clay is the cheapest binder that is completely environmentally friendly.

    For masonry, you must choose dark red clay. Checking the quality of raw materials and the finished mixture is carried out as follows:

    1. You need to take 500 gr. clay, stir it with 200 ml of water so that it does not stick to your hands.
    2. A lump is made from this mass and thrown on the floor or against the wall, if cracks appear on the lump - the clay is too greasy, if the lump immediately crumbled - there is too much sand in the solution, a good clay mixture for laying a furnace should look like plasticine.
    3. A masonry of 1000 bricks will require approximately 50-70 liters of the mixture. To increase the strength of the mixture, 0.5 cups of edible salt are added to the composition for each bucket of clay. To increase the strength of the masonry, in weakly heated areas of the structure, it is permissible to add no more than 500 g of cement to the mixture. on a bucket of clay.
    4. The resulting mixture should look like thick homemade sour cream.
    5. Often, when building brick heating devices, various dry mixtures are used. The methods of their preparation and use are always indicated in the instructions.

    Do not forget that they sell compositions that are designed for different temperature regimes of heating the furnace. There are mixtures intended only for laying fireboxes and there are simple compositions for arranging the walls of a fireplace or stove.

    How many bricks do you need

    Before building a brick barbecue with your own hands, you need to calculate how much it will take. There are many programs designed for this calculation. You can roughly calculate the need using a previously prepared barbecue drawing. Dimensions of a standard brick:

    • length - 25 cm;
    • width - 12 cm;
    • height - 6.5 cm, together with the solution, the height reaches 7 cm.

    Taking into account the design and size of the brick, a calculation is made. Instead of a brick chimney, you can install a tin pipe. Before work, focusing on the drawings and photographs of a brick barbecue, be sure to prepare layered sketches of the masonry. There are 28 layers of brick in the figure, 18 rows of which are the distance to the pipe and 10 rows to the lattice of the structure. Make 18 drawings, on them schematically mark the sequence of laying the bricks. Do not forget that the bottom brick should always overlap with 2 bricks on top. Also, a brick lying longitudinally should be overlapped from above by 2 transverse bricks. The finished oven can be seen in the photo of a brick barbecue.

    You need to find a convenient place to build a barbecue, while taking into account:

    • the barbecue should be at least 5 meters from the neighboring site (better further);
    • the structure is built at the maximum distance from wooden buildings;
    • there should be no shrubs or trees on the lawn near the barbecue;
    • you need to be able to bring lighting and water to the barbecue;
    • it should be possible to build a shed or gazebo.

    Foundation device

    Immediately you need to make a markup for the foundation of the barbecue at the selected place, its dimensions must correspond to the order of the brick barbecue and take into account the masonry drawings. In addition, the dimensions depend on the layout of the site - will it be nearby, a gazebo is being built, or you need to make a foundation just for building a barbecue. It is best to use a slab base:

    1. A pit 40-50 cm deep is dug according to predetermined markers.
    2. Fill it with a mixture of gravel and coarse sand to the soil level, tamp it and install a formwork with a height of 150 mm from above.
    3. In the assembled structure, a reinforcing cage is assembled.
    4. A concrete solution is poured into the formwork, tamped well so that there is no air left in the foundation body.
    5. Check the levelness of the platform using the level.
    6. After that, everything is covered with a damp burlap in order to increase the drying time and prevent cracking of the concrete.

    The foundation will be completely ready in three days, then the formwork can be removed.

    Building barbecue walls

    To protect the foundation and brick from moisture penetrating from the soil, the walls of the foundation must be treated with tar, 2-3 layers of roofing material are placed on top of it. Mix the masonry mortar (recipe above). The first row of bricks is laid on the roofing material, spread on the foundation. On the 7th and 10th rows, metal plates are inserted into the masonry. The metal sheets should be ½ the length of the brick narrower than the oven.

    When laying bricks, be sure to take long breaks, which are necessary for the mortar to set, otherwise the tall structure may creep.

    The fresh mortar sags, the seams between the rows of bricks dry up and become smaller, for this reason deviations from the project are possible. It takes 2-3 days for the walls to shrink, this is influenced by the ambient temperature. Self-construction allows for work breaks - a significant advantage over hired builders who are trying to complete the project as quickly as possible.

    With a saw or grinder, cut 1/2 half of the brick, so that you can lay a sheet of metal in the groove made. We raise the walls further, laying bricks according to the drawings. On the 15th row, it is necessary to lay out the arch, for this they use semicircular wooden templates. A pattern of the required curvature is made of plywood, a cut line is marked on it with a pencil and cut out with a jigsaw. The second board is prepared in the same way. To strengthen the vault template, another board is inserted between the boards, and everything is connected. The ready-made template can be used. It is placed between the walls of the furnace, and the laying of bricks begins, connecting them with mortar.

    The middle brick of the vault should be exactly in the center of the firebox opening.

    For laying the firebox and barbecue pipe, it is necessary to use a heat-resistant brick.

    They begin to lay the pipe from the 18th row; to reduce the width of the hole in each row of the masonry, remove ¼ of the width of the brick. Thus, 28 rows of masonry are laid out. You can prepare a metal box instead of a brick vault and mount it in the masonry.

    What you need to pay attention to:

    1. Using a barbecue on your site must not violate fire safety rules, otherwise the rest may be spoiled.
    2. You cannot light a barbecue with gasoline or kerosene, use special compounds for this purpose;
    3. It is not necessary to impregnate coals or firewood with compounds for ignition, they only sprinkle the kindling from above;
    4. Don't forget that quality fuel means good rest and delicious food. For this reason, worry about dry wood in advance. Experts advise using birch charcoal, which makes the products aromatic and tasty.
