Archaeological excavations show that people lived on the territory of the town of Heviz as early as 7,000 years ago. In the era ancient rome there was a rich villa with central heating for which thermal waters were used. At the same time, the Romans also knew about the healing properties of these waters - an ancient sanctuary found in the vicinity of the lake testifies to this.

During the Middle Ages, the first settlements appeared around the reservoir, in particular, the town of Heviz was first mentioned in manuscripts from the beginning of the 14th century. It is known that its inhabitants used the thermal waters, but it only became an official resort in the 18th century. It all started with the fact that in 1769 the famous physicist and chemist Ferenc Slaby made an analysis of the composition of water and detailed description her useful properties. In 1795, the territory near the reservoir was purchased by the Hungarian aristocrat György Festetics, who began the construction of baths.

The resort complex of Fertitić developed and grew until the Second World War. In the post-war period, it was nationalized, and a state clinic appeared here. Today it is still working, but now it is a large treatment center that combines the Hévíz baths and St. Andrew's Rheumatology Hospital.
