Decorate the facade of the house with foam elements. It is easy and simple to mount the foam plastic facade decor with your own hands. Common types of architectural elements made of expanded polystyrene

The façade, decorated with exquisite stucco molding, creates a lasting impression. A completely ordinary building can be turned into a real palace if decorated with decorative elements. Nowadays, facade decor made of expanded polystyrene, which is also called imitation of stucco molding, is often used for decoration. It is much more convenient than heavy stucco molding, because not every cottage owner plans to load the walls with kilograms of gypsum and plaster.

Stucco molding is a necessary part of neoclassicism or eclecticism. In ancient times, such decorations were made from marble, plaster, plaster or other materials. Now there is a great opportunity to buy them ready-made and fix them on the facade. Moreover, they will not load the load-bearing part of the structure. Coated styrofoam facade decor has become widespread, since it can be used to quickly and inexpensively decorate a building.

Advantages and properties of facade decor

There are many reasons to install a facade decor made of expanded polystyrene:

  • Low weight of the product - the imitation of stucco molding does not put unnecessary stress on the facade.
  • Durability - expanded polystyrene does not collapse under the influence of sunlight, moisture, temperature extremes.
  • Simple installation - it is not necessary to contact the builders, you can handle it yourself. The decor is attached with glue.
  • The product can be dyed - you can choose any color.
  • Aesthetic qualities - the most complex architectural forms can be obtained from expanded polystyrene.
  • Affordable price - the purchase of the material will take much less money than if you decided to create plaster moldings.
  • Safety - since the stucco molding is very light, if it falls, it practically does not pose a danger to a person walking by the building. But plaster decor can be traumatic.
  • Heat and sound insulation - expanded polystyrene is a heater that reduces heat loss and dampens sound waves.

More durable - facade decor made of polystyrene foam with a composite or cement-polymer coating

Advice. If you want to visually lengthen the facade, you can use an interfloor belt. To make the building appear taller, use columns, pilasters and other vertical elements.

Polystyrene production

To obtain decorative products from expanded polystyrene, polystyrene granules are placed in a mold and treated with chemicals. As a result of the action of active substances, the material foams and expands, occupying the entire capacity. Various shapes will be cut from the resulting blank sheets.

Architectural elements for facade finishing are formed by means of molded cutting. It is produced by means of a special instrument, the nozzle of which resembles a string. During the manufacture, 3D computer modeling is used. This achieves high accuracy down to one micron. The technology used makes it possible to produce decorative items of a given size and shape. The designer works on the appearance of every detail. Some firms offer custom-made polystyrene decor according to an individual sketch.

Material texture and color

Styrofoam decor is most often white. But they can always be repainted. White is versatile and can be combined with any architectural style. Imitations of decorative stone are widespread. You can purchase tiles featuring brick wall textures, wood grain, or natural stone tiles.

Decorating ideas

By attaching styrofoam decor to the walls with your own hands, you can decorate the house in various style directions:

  • Classic- in this case, complex stucco molding with curls is not used. Distinctive features are triangular sandriks and pediments, pilasters, rectangular window openings.
  • Neo-style- modern interpretation of one or more architectural trends. For example, you can combine pointed Gothic arches with antique columns.
  • Gothic- lancet vaults and carved decorations are characteristic. The walls can contain bas-reliefs with sculptural compositions and false niches. If your windows are standard and rectangular, you can buy a custom shape that will turn them into gothic vaulted. At the same time, you do not have to disassemble the masonry and arrange a new one.
  • Japanese- restrained decor, simple geometric shapes. Often elements for the facade are painted with brown paint, and the walls are left white.
  • Fairy- usually used in the design of small country houses. The dwelling can resemble a Disneyland palace or a hobbit's burrow. You can use a large amount of small decor.
  • Baroque- an abundant amount of stucco molding, panels, rosettes and floral ornaments are often used.
  • Fachwerk- use imitation of load-bearing elements - old wooden beams and crossbeams.
  • Romanticism- happened in Italy, absorbed elements of oriental styles, including Arabic.

Most often, designers use facade elements in order to create insulated houses that are close in style to classicism. Such buildings are quite conservative and, at the same time, fashionable and luxurious.

Varieties of facade stucco

Due to the special properties of expanded polystyrene, a wide variety of types of decor can be made from it.

Cornices, moldings, arched openings - used to decorate door portals and window blocks

Columns, semi-columns and pilasters are usually used to decorate the veranda and entrance area. The difference between a column and a pilaster is that it is a free-standing element. Pilasters and semi-columns are always leaning against the wall

Bas-reliefs - can cover most of the wall and look like a separate block like a painting

Decorative fences - cannot be used as balustrades, since expanded polystyrene will not withstand the mass of a person who decides to lean on it

Basement tiles - mounted in the lower part of the building, often made under natural stone

Corner elements - serve not only as decoration, but also prevent the penetration of water and dirt at the junction

Castle stones - used to decorate openings, arches, vaults. Often performed with images of lions or mythical creatures

It should be noted that the facade decor can be vertical or horizontal by the type of installation. To make the building look harmonious, both types are usually used.

How to install decorative stucco molding

The operation is not difficult, but it requires accuracy. First, you need to prepare the surface on which you want to fix the decoration. If the wall is uneven, then it will not work to neatly attach the column or portico. Uneven stucco molding is unlikely to improve the appearance of the building. Most likely, it will have to be dismantled. When removed, the decorative element will be damaged and will not be suitable for further use.

Stucco molding for the facade made of expanded polystyrene can be used not only for external, but also for internal decoration. Installation can be done in various ways. Small parts are fixed with double-sided tape or glue. While the glue is still fresh, the part can move under its own weight. Therefore, it is advisable to substitute a temporary support that will temporarily fix the part.

If the thickness of the decoration is more than 100 millimeters, it is necessary to fix it with dowel-nails or ordinary dowels. First, the part must be attached to the wall and circle it along the contour. Then holes are drilled to install the mounts in the wall and fly itself. When ordinary dowels are used, the sockets for them are made on the back of the element. In this case, it is impossible for the dowel to reach the outside. On the same side, glue is applied, after which the product is applied to the base of the wall. The dowels are screwed in or driven in with a hammer.

Advice. The joints between parts and structural elements must be filled with sealant. To obtain neat joints, tile crosses are used.

Life time

If you install expanded polystyrene decor on the facade, it will last at least 5 years. It should be noted that the material can be used in humid climates. The product is not afraid of fungus, corrosion or ultraviolet radiation.

Why and in what cases the decor is reinforced

Facade elements are exposed to thermal loads and become damp after rain. Pure foam begins to deteriorate under such conditions. To protect the stucco molding from cracking, it is reinforced. For this purpose, a fiberglass reinforcement mesh is used. Reinforced coating is also quite often used. It is an acrylic or mineral compound with which the workpiece is coated.

Decorative elements made of expanded polystyrene will give individuality even to a house built according to a standard design. Using several types of decorative stucco moldings, you can turn a country cottage into a royal residence. And if you want to change the look of the facade, it will not be difficult to dismantle the decor.

Everyone knows that the facade of a house is his face. A beautiful and well-groomed appearance always makes a positive impression. Also, the decor of the facade of the house allows us to draw conclusions about the tastes of the owners of the house. The design should be not only original, but also functional, that is, it should have heat-saving, moisture-proof, fireproof qualities.

This insulation technology allows you to give the exterior of the building a unique appearance.

Fiberglass concrete

Fiber concrete is a kind of durable stone made of artificial fibers (it looks like a natural stone). Fiberglass concrete is much stronger and more reliable in operation than the previously considered foam. Architectural products look like a shell with a thickness of up to 25mm, which is attached to the surface. Fiberglass concrete is distinguished by the following qualities:

  • high strength;
  • crack resistance;
  • reduced fragility of elements (achieved due to the possibility of minor deformations);
  • moisture resistance;
  • resistance to sudden temperature changes;
  • ease;
  • ease of installation.

This insulation technology allows you to give the exterior of the building a unique appearance due to the abundance of decorative paints

The choice of facade decor

When choosing a material for the manufacture of facades, it is imperative to take into account the general style of the building. The main thing is that the whole finish looks harmonious, there is no overload.

Experts recommend dividing the building horizontally with the help of decor, when it is required to emphasize its solidity. This type is suitable for buildings with a small number of floors. But it is better to transform a tall house with a short facade with elements of a vertical orientation.

The combination of decorative elements of different orientations in the general plane requires careful preparation and thoughtfulness of the entire composition.

The mustard color of the walls will give the building a solid look

Wood siding is an environmentally friendly material that does not corrode

This type of decoration will give the exterior of the building a unique appearance.

What architectural decorative elements belong to what type is presented in the table:

Due to the wet facade, condensation will not form on the walls of the interior

Fiber cement panels withstand rainfall and low temperatures for many years without losing their shape

Individual decorative elements include:

  1. Stucco molding. In most cases, it can be made of artificial stone (it is realistic to choose a material that is as close as possible to natural stone), polymer concrete, polystyrene. For its creation, lightweight materials are selected.
  2. Moldings. This group includes window frames, various types of crowns and cornices, window sills that are unique in their architecture. They contribute to the original zoning of the building.

The choice of material largely depends on the volume of decorative elements and their location on the facade.

50 photos of ideas for decorating the facade of the house:

Facade decor made of polystyrene has recently been widely used, which is facilitated by the relatively low cost and originality of the appearance. The interior with styrofoam decorations changes beyond recognition. You can purchase and install ready-made decoration parts, which significantly reduces the time for arranging the facade. However, when doing work with your own hands, it is possible to realize the most daring imagination and old ideas. With a high-quality implementation of this event, it will be almost impossible to distinguish imitation from stone or marble statues.

Facade decor made of polystyrene is widely used today.

What are the advantages of the material

Polyfoam is a versatile polymer material that is widely used for various purposes. Most often, this term is called polystyrene foam and polyurethane foam plates. Polyfoam has a number of positive qualities: light weight, ease of cutting, thermal insulation properties, whiteness, rather low cost.

Styrofoam - lightweight, warm, inexpensive - great material for decoration

This material has different density and grain size. Dense structures can be easily confused with gypsum and natural stone, even marble. This effect is the basis for the use of foam as decorative elements. The ease of processing of the material makes it possible to manufacture any figures, patterned carvings and other products. Styrofoam molding in appearance is almost indistinguishable from gypsum creations, while it is light and easy to manufacture.

Along with the positive qualities, the material also has one important drawback. This polymer (especially expanded polystyrene) has a low melting and ignition temperature, and when it burns and simply exposed to high temperatures, it can release substances harmful to humans. This condition is important to consider when using it. In addition, the foam breaks easily, and therefore should not be subjected to mechanical stress.

When the facade is being set up, foam plastic can be used in several grades: PSB-S-15, PSB-S-25 and PSB-S-35. The last type of material (which is the most expensive) is considered the most durable, so it is used in harsh climatic conditions. The most widespread is PSB-S-25 foam, which has a density of 20–25 kg / m³, and the permissible bending load is no more than 0.26 MPa. It is also important that the water absorption of the material is practically equal to 0.

Firstly, the possibility of using finishing material for decorating a private house. Numerous elements are shown on the façade of a large two-story building. However, this does not mean that styrofoam facade decor can only be used on mansions. In any building, you can install individual elements or other details, including those of an exclusive nature.

Styrofoam will help to embody any ideas for indoor and outdoor decoration

The following are the most common styrofoam decorative elements for the facade:

  • moldings;
  • cornices;
  • rusty;
  • columns;
  • pilasters.

When performing them, different techniques can be used:

  • stucco molding;
  • bas-reliefs;
  • thread;
  • ornaments;
  • patterns;
  • vases;
  • flowerpots, etc.

Secondly, the cladding can be made from standard parts, exclusive items purchased ready-made or made by hand.

Finishing the facade of the house with foam plastic may include the following solutions:

  • threaded styrofoam cornice;
  • porticoes;
  • architectural modilions;
  • rustication of the basement or the entire corner of the building;
  • carved foam window frames;
  • console elements;
  • portals and flutes.

Third, facade decorative foam has the following advantages:

  • fairly quick and easy production of parts;
  • low cost;
  • high service life;
  • no size limitation;
  • the ability to carry out work independently;
  • absence of significant additional mechanical loads on the wall and foundation, taking into account the low specific weight of plastic;
  • fairly high compressive strength;
  • no risk of rotting and mold;
  • high resistance to any climatic conditions in all regions of the country;
  • long-term color retention.

What is required for decoration

For decorating with foam, you will need a set of tools and additional materials

In order to equip a foam plastic facade, you should take care of such consumables and accessories in advance:

  • polyurethane-based polyurethane foam;
  • foam glue;
  • dowels 12–20 cm long, umbrella type;
  • reinforced fiberglass mesh;
  • acrylic type putty;
  • facade primer composition;
  • paint for facade works;
  • mineral plaster.

Such a tool will help to carry out all the work qualitatively:

  • glue gun;
  • "String" for cutting foam;
  • jigsaw;
  • hacksaw for metal;
  • putty knife;
  • paint brush;
  • construction mixer;
  • electric drill;
  • screwdriver;
  • plumb line;
  • roulette;
  • metal ruler;
  • protractor;
  • building level.

Technological stages

Styrofoam facade decoration, although it is considered a fairly simple event available to any person, is carried out in several stages, taking into account certain principles.

Styrofoam decor is a simple task, the main thing is to observe the phasing

The following main stages are distinguished:

  • preparatory work;
  • making or purchasing decoration elements;
  • leveling the surface;
  • installation of polystyrene with its reliable fixing in the right place;
  • application of protective and finishing coatings.

The preparatory phase begins with the development of a project for the overall design of the facade. At this stage, the style of decoration and the number, type and size of decorative elements are determined; a diagram of their placement is drawn. Next, a thorough preparation of the surface is carried out for the imposition of foam:

  • leveling the surface;
  • cleaning the installation site from dirt and grease stains.

Installation of foam decor includes the following processes:

  1. Alignment of the facade structure on which the decor is planned to be installed. As a rule, such areas include cornices, window sills, certain zones on the wall, jambs of window and door openings. Leveling is carried out by applying plaster.
  2. Installation of decor. The facade foam is attached with a special glue designed specifically for this material. In particular, the "Merolith S95" glue can be noted. The adhesive is applied to the entire back side of the part, and then it is pressed against the installation site and held until it is adhered with glue. When installing large parts or in cases where they protrude above the wall surface by more than 10–12 cm, the fastening is reinforced with dowels or anchors. For their installation, holes are carefully drilled in the foam. If such a need arises after installation, then drilling is carried out after the glue has completely hardened (2-3 days). Filling elements are installed in appropriate places on the wall. When mounting parts vertically on a wall, it is recommended to keep them pressed for 30–40 hours.
  3. Sealing joints and seams. This operation is carried out using special facade sealants, which are applied with a facade brush. After the composition has dried, grouting is carried out. Merolith S1 can be recommended as such a sealant.
  4. When a facade decor made of coated foam is provided, a number of additional work is carried out. A thin layer of primer is applied to the surface of the plastic. After hardening and grinding, the facade elements are covered with acrylic paint in 2 layers.

The production of shaped elements from polystyrene, first of all, provides for its accurate cutting. When carrying out such a procedure, crumbling of the material must not be allowed. That is why its cutting is provided by a heated "string". If the composition is composed of several parts, then the accuracy of their alignment should not exceed 1 mm.

Use a heated string to get neatly cut pieces.

In general, the production of decorative foam elements is carried out in the following order:

  1. Decoration of a decor sketch or selection of a ready-made idea with a drawing of all the details, methods of their articulation, attachment points, choice of colors.
  2. Drawing the element on foam in full size, and so that you can cut the material.
  3. Cutting out the conceived shape from the styrofoam.
  4. Strengthening the decoration element. For this purpose, a fiberglass mesh is fixed using an adhesive composition applied by spraying with the formation of a layer with a thickness of about 2–2.5 mm.

Facade moldings are usually made of plaster and are considered a very common decorative element. Recently, styrofoam molding has become a worthy competitor to such parts. It is lightweight so it can be easily attached to the wall. The facade of a house with a similar decor looks no worse than with a classic design.

Foam stucco molding perfectly replaces gypsum, both in time and in financial costs

Of course, the facade stucco molding is more difficult to manufacture, since it is a volumetric figure. It is best to use finished products that are manufactured by pressing in the factory. However, you can do it yourself, but for this you should use the densest foam - PSB-S-35. Shapes such as curls, voluminous flowers, bas-reliefs, etc. are cut from it.

Decorating the facade of a house with foam plastic has gained wide popularity. The ease of manufacture and installation allows you to do everything yourself, while the decor is difficult to distinguish from the classic options - gypsum, natural stone.

Looking at any house, one can immediately notice the features of the facade decor, its unique elements, unusual style, and aesthetics of architecture. A private house can be interesting and original, even turn into a small palace, castle or fortress in the Gothic style, if you turn on your imagination and have some knowledge.

Facade decor is the hallmark of the house. If a building looks attractive and aesthetically pleasing from the outside, it is immediately clear that inside it has the same elegant and stylish interior. The facade indicates the status of the owner, and also gives the building individuality and originality.

Peculiarities

Anyone knows that a well-kept and beautiful house is always a pleasure to look at. Personalization allows you to create your own face at home. There are many options that can help make a building not only attractive, but also unique.

The main positive quality of the facade decor is the ability to distinguish a building from many others. Facade decor can replace architectural delights and make the design of a house, which is built according to a standard project, individual.

Main elements

In order to make a building look stylish, luxurious and impressive, you need to think about what decorative elements will be used in decorating the facade. There are a large number of different product options for decorating the facade. They are capable of incredibly transforming a building and decorating it in a specific style.

Rust

They are the most ancient element of facade decoration. When decorating any building, rustic details should be used, which are stone panels that have the visual effect of stone masonry. Most often they are used as a decoration for a basement, ground floors, facade corners or square columns.

If you combine panels of various sizes, as well as correctly place and combine them, you can create a beautiful framing of the walls, which, when combined with other design elements, allows you to create a unique facade decor.

Facade window sills

Window sills can create a rather unusual and interesting facade design. With the help of these elements, it is possible to emphasize the load-bearing part of the window opening if you use massive or miniature window sills with moldings, moldings, key stones or other decorative elements.

Facade window decoration

Nowadays, finishing of external slopes on windows is quite popular, which performs not only the function of protection, but also allows you to decorate the facade. There are many colors of finishes, forms of decorative materials and their sizes. Using this element, you can create an original facade in one of the well-known styles.

Facade columns

The most beautiful and noticeable part of the facade decor is the columns. They are able to give the building a chic classic look, as well as narrow or expand the walls visually. When purchasing a column, you need to choose the right style for its implementation so that this decorative element does not stand out from the overall design of the house.

Balustrades

This element is usually a staircase decoration. If you choose it correctly, you can make the building more neat, pompous and luxurious. It is necessary to purchase balustrades according to the architectural style of the facade, as they are capable of attracting a lot of attention to themselves, and the disharmony of styles will be quite noticeable. Most often, these elements are made of stone, plaster, concrete mixes, wood and other materials.

Materials (edit)

Stucco cladding is a great way to decorate your home and make it more interesting and unique. Before you start decorating a facade, you need to consider the properties of various materials.

The most popular material in the production of facade decorative elements is gypsum. Aesthetic, detailed and individual elements are made from it. But there is also a drawback to this material - gypsum absorbs moisture well, so it is unlikely to look attractive after a few years. It must be restored at regular intervals.

It must be remembered that gypsum is one of the heaviest materials, so you should purchase reliable and durable fasteners in order to avoid a variety of problems.

Similar nuances can occur with other materials, such as artificial stone and concrete.

Concrete has a gray tint, so it loses a little compared to gypsum. If the material is dyed, it will need to be repainted every few years.

The artificial stone looks like sandstone and has yellow tones. The attractive texture can attract many, but this material is poor for the manufacture of delicate parts.

One of the disadvantages of concrete, plaster and artificial stone is that they are difficult to install. When decorating the facade, it is necessary to take into account the weight of the decor, since the facade is not always able to withstand any load. If the owner nevertheless chose a heavy decor, the foundation and walls should be strengthened.

Polymeric lightweight materials such as polyurethane, fiberglass, polystyrene and polymer concrete are the best option for facade decoration. The lowest price is polystyrene. Various decorative elements are cut out of it, without complex detailing and bas-reliefs. This material perfectly absorbs moisture, so you need to use it where water will not get on its surface in the future. Then it is painted and reinforced with mesh.

Each fiberglass product is handcrafted.

This allows you to use the customer's sketches and get various elements for custom-made decor. That is why many people believe that fiberglass is a rather profitable and convenient production product. The products have a strong shell that allows the element to be fixed in a specific way.

Polyurethane is an excellent material, products from which include many positive qualities:

  • high degree of detailing of products;
  • light weight;
  • not exposed to moisture;
  • the material is easy to modify or cut during installation;
  • easy installation, affordable both in price and in volume.

Fiberglass concrete is a unique composite material that includes a plasticized mixture of concrete with fiberglass, which has a reinforcing function.

Fiberglass concrete properties:

  • light;
  • does not give a large load on the supporting structures;
  • high strength of the material allows the use of bends and stretching;
  • frost-resistant;
  • fire resistant;
  • shockproof;
  • wear-resistant.

Expanded polystyrene is a material with low thermal conductivity, extremely durable, resistant to various chemicals and good moisture resistance.

Positive qualities of expanded polystyrene:

  • high strength;
  • soundproofing;
  • a light weight;
  • ease of installation;
  • affordable price;
  • no electrical conductivity;
  • non-flammable.

Facade decor made of polyurethane foam has many advantages.

  • It is very similar to gypsum, resistant to external influences of any kind, it is quite easy to paint, prime and plaster.
  • Does not absorb moisture and is resistant to direct sunlight.
  • The material is lightweight and affordable.
  • There are many models, you can also order an element of the facade decor from this material individually.

A rather popular option is facing brick. Currently, you can find a large number of shapes and shades, so everyone can choose exactly what will help to realize even the most unusual and creative idea of the designer.

When decorating door and window openings, brick of a regular shape is most often used. But you can also use unusual types of material (for example, trapezoidal bricks). This material is ideal for decorating an arch. Brick of other shapes is able to decorate the space of the arch with platbands or semi-columns. Very often, bricks of non-standard shapes are used to decorate the basements of buildings.

Fiber-reinforced concrete is a mixture of filler and fine-grained concrete. The filler can be glass, synthetic or steel fibers of various diameters and lengths.

Positive properties of fiber-reinforced concrete:

  • the material is plastic;
  • has high strength;
  • durable;
  • frost-resistant;
  • resistant to negative biochemical and atmospheric influences.
  • able to reduce the weight of the architectural structure.

Facade finishing

Most often, the beauty and uniqueness of the facade finish attracts the eye. Buildings designed in this way are remembered for a long time and leave their mark in the memory of any person. Decorative elements make the building unique and interesting.

You can apply classic-style decoration, make the building an old castle, decorate with beautiful baroque stucco moldings, or give the house a more modern look.

There are many ways of facade decoration.

  • Panels-polyalpanes, sandwich panels. This option is not only decoration for the building, but also facade insulation.
  • Alukobond- finishing applied if the facade is ventilated.
  • Artificial and natural stone allows the building to become an unusual castle, and is also durable and helps to insulate the facade.
  • Siding Is an extremely popular and inexpensive option. There are many colors and shades, so with the help of this option, you can bring to life even the most daring design decisions.

  • Tile(porcelain stoneware) creates a durable and easy-to-use facade.
  • Plaster- decorative plaster of various textures, plastering for painting.
  • Brick renews the facade and makes it warmer.
  • There is many different elements of stucco molding: volumetric modeling, pilasters, bas-reliefs and more.
  • Facade mosaic decoration gives the building a memorable and unusual look, and also allows you to enjoy its uniqueness.

Facade stucco molding is an extremely important feature of a large number of styles: classicism, rococo, empire, modern. If you skillfully and correctly choose the stucco molding, you can give the building an individual and unusual style, as well as an elegant and elegant look.

When decorating the facade, you must use stone, paint, plaster or any other suitable material.

Architectural lighting of the building is able to create a real miracle with the visual perception of this object in the evening and at night. Lighting elements paint the facade with new colors and shades, make it more "lively", adding dynamics to the design with light.

Window and door decoration

Elemental facades allow you to make a building unique in its kind and extremely impressive visually.

Sandrik

It is a decorative element that can be used to beautifully decorate the facade of a building. It is usually installed above a window or door. This element is a medium-sized protrusion above window or door openings, used exclusively for facade decoration. Most of these elements are successfully combined with other elements of the facade decor, for example, moldings, platbands, cornices and rustic panels. Applying sandrik, you can give the house a chic and status look.

Molding

A versatile and popular element that is often used to decorate buildings with a finishing material made of clinker bricks or tiles. There are many different shapes and sizes of the element. It is quite lightweight and easy to install.

Cornice

This element is the protruding part of the decor, over which the roof begins. It is an extremely lightweight construction. There are many different shapes of the element. Usually the cornice is installed in the place where the horizontal slab of the cornice overhang and the front wall adjoin. It has no top roof and cannot be used over windows.

Arched decor

Quite often, you can find arched windows in architecture, and builders have a question how to arrange such window or doorways. In order to make the decoration neat and beautiful, it is necessary to use arched moldings, consisting of segments that are curved with a specific radius. To install these elements, the joints should be sharpened to fit them under the arched window opening.

Radius moldings are used in the decoration of round towers or other similar elements. They are able to make the facade of a building more beautiful and unique.

Slope

It is a flat wide panel that helps to walk around the inside of window openings. Thus, it is possible to ensure the evenness of the surface and sufficient insulation of the side of the slope of the window and door.

Since time immemorial architecture has been a part of culture, its masterpieces fascinate and inspire us with beauty, grandeur of forms and details. The facade of a house is like clothing, and today it can tell a lot about the status and tastes of its owners, because the first impression of any building is created depending on how it looks from the outside.

The architectural relief decoration, which has a very long history, plays an important role in the formation of the facade. Exquisite building decorations have been used for centuries, since the days of ancient civilizations. If centuries ago, architects decorated only palaces, castles and museums, now, thanks to new materials such as expanded polystyrene, rich decoration has become more affordable.

Today, expanded polystyrene (EPS) shapes the design of many building projects. In the 1950s, this material was recognized as the main insulating material, and later it became a powerful tool in the creation of durable design elements. Its benefits are undeniable!

  1. The characteristics of this lightweight building material make it reusable.
  2. The relatively low cost of expanded polystyrene decorative products can significantly reduce financial costs.
  3. The production time for the decor from this light, air-filled plastic is much shorter than the production time for elements from concrete, plaster and stone.
  4. The light weight of the parts makes it easy to ship to site.
  5. The wide range of colors in the design allows the use of architectural styrofoam decorations for the decoration of a wide variety of buildings.
  6. Decorative elements covered with a waterproofing protective layer have excellent weather resistance.
  7. The decor can be flexible, it is not affected by ultraviolet rays and moisture, it does not shrink.
  8. Facade profiles and elements are perfectly combined with textured plaster and clinker tiles, they are easy to install and safe to work with.

The latest polymer elements are becoming an integral part of many buildings, both residential and public. They are fixed on the facade with special glue, larger and heavier forms can be additionally fixed.

Individual styrofoam modules in the design solution can be combined according to style, project specifics and personal taste. At the same time, modern facade decorations are often exact copies of the original forms of the past, therefore they are successfully used in the restoration of old houses, architectural and historical monuments built in different centuries - old facade decorations destroyed and covered with cracks can be completely replaced with EPS elements of the same shape and sizes.

Common types of architectural elements made of expanded polystyrene

Decorative columns

Columns made of polymeric materials are not part of architectural structures in modern construction, they are absolutely decorative. These elements can be rectangular or circular, and their sizes and styles are also different. Like classic columns, they have three parts - a base, a body and a capital. In some cases, metal supports are decorated with expanded polystyrene elements or hidden pipes are decorated.

Pilasters

Pilaster is an architectural element that in classical architecture is used to give the appearance of support in the decorative articulation of walls. Externally, the pilaster is very similar to a column, but it is, in fact, a decorative ledge, its shape is not volumetric, but embossed. The pilaster parts are exactly the same as the column parts, they are all purchased separately.

Architectural profiles

Architectural profiles can be of different types and shapes, and they perform different functions.

Profile assignmentAppearance
Facade cornice is the main decorative element of the building facade. Depending on the location, this profile can be a cornice between floors and a cornice located under the roof. The size and shape of this profile is selected in strict, modular interdependence.

Horizontal decorative profiles, the function of which, unlike cornices, is dividing, they are used to outline or divide different levels of a building.

Window sill elements of external decoration, which are installed at the base of window openings.

Decorative profiles of various sizes and shapes, which are usually used for decoration at the edges and corners of door and window openings.

Profiles for imitation of "rustic siding" on the facade. Such rustication will beautifully complement the overall design solution.
You can produce:
- laying alternately rustic stones of various sizes,
- laying the rustication horizontally,
- laying at regular intervals.

Gables

The pediment is found in classical Greek temples, in Renaissance masterpieces and in neoclassical architecture. This element usually has the shape of a triangle surrounded by stucco on three sides. The field of the pediment is often decorated with sculptures.

Arches

Arches are structures that, as a rule, have a semi-cylindrical shape; they are used as a decorative element above doors and windows, to decorate false windows, between two columns or columns.

These elements in architecture can be called cornerstones, they are installed at the top of an arch or vault. Today, such a stone, made from expanded polystyrene, is used to decorate gates, doors, windows, ceilings and much more. Castle stones are endless decorative possibilities. Their wide range of designs makes it easy to create an elegant and trendy home facade, both modern and classic. The stones are made of high quality polystyrene and are easy to install. The special quartz coating makes the part tough and very durable.

This architectural decor is used to decorate the corners of buildings, using it to visually reveal the reliability and strength of structures. Most often, these elements are made in the form of tiles, the edges of which are made with a slight bevel to prevent the accumulation of water and dirt in the grooves.

Balustrades

Balustrades surround structures of stairs, terraces, balconies and the like. They consist of a parapet supported by curly posts. They also decorate buildings, creating a special impression of respectability and stability. Often, balustrades are used to visually support windows.

Features of the production of decor

The modern process of modeling polymer architectural decorations is quite different from what it was in ancient times, but the visual effect is not inferior to the aesthetics of more expensive predecessors. The raw material for the decor, which was traditionally made by hand from stone, cast from gypsum and concrete, was chosen with a density of 25-35 kg per cubic meter, gas-filled and very light in weight.

The part is formed on a programmed machine by thermal cutting. Therefore, absolutely any idea can be easily implemented. First, specialists model an architectural element in a computer program, and then it is cut on a machine, taking into account radial mates and the most accurate dimensions. The machines literally copy the designed model, after which a composition with protective properties is applied to the part. Often, the strength of architectural details is already reinforced during production with a mesh that protects the element from any negative influences. Further, the decor is covered with a cement-glue layer (1-6 mm) with various fillers and reinforcing microfibers. It is this coating that protects the decor from UV, moisture, it resists low temperatures and gives vapor permeability.

Mounting

Before proceeding with the decor of the facades, they develop a project. To do this, a rough sketch is first created that reflects the real shape and size of the building. Then the search for an idea begins. Architectural details can be formed from various elements, they must have the appropriate proportions and be positioned so that the appearance of the house changes for the better. To do this, you can rely on an inner sense of harmony or study the proportions of the "Golden Section". The final stage of the design is a drawing made to scale, it can be produced on a computer or manually.

Installation includes three main steps: cutting, gluing and painting.

When ordering items, you need to calculate the number of meters or the number of pieces of the product, then you can independently calculate the price of the product. When measuring windows or doors, remember that the length of each edge must be ordered with a margin. All component parts of columns and pilasters are sold separately and glued when placed.

Before installation, profiles, cornices, moldings and other elements should be laid out in a dry place on a flat surface, away from heating appliances. The parts are not stacked tightly on top of each other. The maximum profile dimensions can be 200 cm long and 120 cm high. The experience and opinion of the masters indicate that the most acceptable choice of profile strips with a length of about 50 cm. Strips of this length are easier to install. Installation of curtain rods with a length of about 200 cm is more expensive due to the time required and the need for two people for installation.

The profiles are cut at angles in the range of 90-45 degrees. Tolerance + - 5 mm. Straight cuts can be made with a saw, or can be cut with a knife or circular saw.

Attention! Facade profiles and expanded polystyrene elements can only be used as decoration, they cannot bear any load on the structure.

Required tools:

  • measuring instruments,
  • miter box,
  • putty knife,
  • brush,
  • pencil,
  • sandpaper.

Step 1. Preparatory work

Before installing the elements, markings are carried out on the facade according to the project, using a level, tape measure and other devices. It is best to start installation at a temperature of 5-30 ° C.

Step 2. Cleaning

The surface is thoroughly cleaned of dirt and plaster, old paint is removed with solvents.

Step 3. Alignment

The surface is ideally leveled with mineral facade filler. Then the finishing layers are applied, all cracks and defects are eliminated.

Step 4. Fixing the decor

Architectural elements are attached with glue, and sometimes a reinforcing mesh is used to enhance adhesion. Often, glue is recommended by decor manufacturers who know the features of their product. Typically, a high-performance, high-adhesion, polystyrene foam adhesive, polymer-based and designed for multiple weather cycles. Today, various types of glue of good quality have been created, they are simultaneously used in the construction of thermal insulation systems of buildings, for example, this is "Adesilex P9 Mapei".

The master must apply a composition of glue specially designed for installation with a notched trowel to the back of the element, after which the architectural part is carefully pressed to the place of its attachment. For large elements, various fasteners are used during installation. We must not forget that large, protruding elements need to be protected by ebb tides.

Step 5. Docking elements

The outer edges of the profiles, if they are joined, are placed at a distance of 5 mm. After 12 hours, the gap left is filled with a solution that is used in insulation systems.

Attention! Silicone should not be used because the paint will not cover it.

The joints of the façade profiles with other elements of the façade, such as window sills, sills or wooden parts, are always filled with a flexible sealant. At the end of the installation, it is necessary to check the tightness of the joints of all combinations of elements; any gap should be carefully filled with a special compound. Irregularities are treated with sandpaper.

Painting

After fixing all the elements, a primer is made, and then painting in the selected color using a roller or brush. First you need to protect the walls around the part to be painted. For this, masking tape is used, which can be easily removed after painting. Before work, the surface should be primed with diluted paint (approx. 10-20% water).

Then the dried surface is covered with paint a second time using the thick original composition. The operation can be repeated if necessary.

Some of the organic solvents are capable of dissolving the materials to which they are applied. Therefore, when choosing a paint for expanded polystyrene, you need to pay attention to its composition. If you are not sure how the paint will go, you can experiment on a small piece of the profile.

White facades are versatile, suitable for both modern and classic buildings. White gives the impression of purity and novelty. The second most popular facade color is all shades of yellow. The yellow facade has a warm, illuminated character and evokes positive emotions, it is ideal for single-storey houses, as warm, sunny tones go well with all the characteristic colors of the roof.
