How to remake old interior doors. Do-it-yourself renovation of old doors: a great way to finish. How and what can be updated: ideas

Having completed repairs in the room, the owners may be faced with the fact that the old interior door does not correspond to the new interior, although in terms of its functional abilities it can still serve for some time. In this case, you should think about how to update the interior door with your own hands. There are several decorative techniques that differ in the complexity of execution and the cost of materials. You just have to choose the most suitable one.

Preparatory work

Before decorating interior doors, they are prepared. For this, the following tools are used:

  • construction glue;
  • tracing paper;
  • Press.

It is necessary to dismantle the door. Then examine the canvas for defects. If the old box has scratches, they need to be repaired with wood putty. You can decorate the canvas with photo wallpaper. If in some places the doors are peeling, then an adhesive mixture is applied, tracing paper is applied, pressed. An adhesive mixture is also used to seal cracks and micro-crevices. If the defects are large, finely dispersed shavings are added to the adhesive.

Doors update methods

Simple ways to update the canvas include:

  • applying varnish;
  • staining;
  • the use of stain and veneer;
  • stained glass window.

Painting, varnishing and staining

Old wooden doors can be renovated by painting, varnishing and staining.

For the used water, synthetic and organic dyes. After that, the door takes on a neat appearance.

The door leaf is possible. Wood varnish is well absorbed into the wood, evenly covering the entire surface of the structure. The main plus of the protective and decorative composition is the presence of a toning base.
To apply varnish, use a spray gun or brushes. Experts advise to ennoble the tree with a brush that easily repeats the structure of the structure, soaking hard-to-reach areas well. To increase the protective properties, it is recommended to paint the door in 2 layers.

If you have to freshen the box again, stain is used. Then the coating is varnished. Stain can be used to update the color scheme of the canvas. It prevents mixing of tones, and due to subsequent varnishing, the brightness of the color is enhanced. Sanding gives a matte finish.

If there is no need to create a matte surface, polishing and drying is carried out after grinding. This technology gives the door a crystal shine.

Veneering

Veneer is used to decorate the door. This technique of decorating wooden canvases is used if they are made from cheap sawdust. Due to veneering, the door acquires an aesthetic appearance. Veneer must be glued transversely to the wood fiber.

The veneer gives the door a noble appearance of a real solid wood

Self-adhesive film

You can decorate the box with vinyl self-adhesive imitating wood. With this technique, coating defects are easily hidden. Before you paste over a wooden door, you will need to prepare a hair dryer, fabric, scissors.

At the first stage, the coating is cleaned from various defects. This stage is considered the most difficult. Next, the marking is performed using a tape measure. These canvases are transferred to the millimeter markings made by the manufacturer on the back of the film. A knife is used to cut the product.

The film hides all minor defects and makes the surface look like natural wood

The cut pieces of self-adhesive are applied to the desired section of the door. There is a protective layer on the seamy side of the film, under which there is glue. Carefully peel off a few centimeters of the layer to adhere the product to the door.

The cover, completely applied to the door, is smoothed out with a rubber trowel or soft material. Self-adhesive is wrapped on all ends of the coating. They immediately cut the corners of the PVC product, install a lock with a handle.

Wallpaper

With the help of modern photo printing, an image of the desired size is transferred onto paper. Wall murals on wooden doors look beautiful. Any image is printed. To do this, you can use the services of an advertising agency or printing house. The image can be selected at home or with the help of specialists.

Photo wallpaper is one of the options for updating interior doors.

On plain wallpaper, you can stick polyurethane or foam moldings. In this case, the style in which the doors were decorated will change. The resulting design is suitable for a room decorated in a classic style. If you use a colored background or curved moldings, then the doors will be decorated in the Provence style.

Before drawing the pattern, the surface is leveled, processed with glue. If paint comes off the door, remove it. Wallpaper is also processed with glue.

A rubber roller is used to level the canvas. If bubbles remain, remove them with a plastic spatula. Then, the remaining air is removed from the center of the structure to the edges. With the help of this spatula, the joints of the wallpaper (if any) are ironed. If the technology is performed correctly, then the joints are not visible.

Wallpaper with moldings is suitable for classic interiors

The edges of the wallpaper must be cut with a knife. This is done until the glue softens the wallpaper. Otherwise, they will tear and stretch easily. Leave to dry for several hours. The process of decorating fiberboard or solid wood continues in 12-24 hours. It depends on the temperature and humidity level.

A simple pencil is used for marking. After the drawing has been applied, you will need to measure the length of the molding components with a tape measure. Then they are cut off, and the edges are sawn at an angle of 45 degrees. With the help of PVA glue, the back surface of the pieces is smeared. They need to be glued according to the exposed markings. When the canvas is dry, you can put it back. According to this principle, at home, you can update the doors of the bedroom, nursery, kitchen.

Drawings and paintings

The advantages of this decor include:

  • beautiful and original appearance;
  • simple execution;
  • the ability to use ready-made stencils;
  • a wide range of materials;
  • the embodiment of different ideas.

The downside of this method is that it requires artistic skill to apply..
At the first stage, the coating is degreased with alcohol and treated with a primer. The last composition is applied twice. Acrylic paint is used in the same way. Each next layer of paint is applied after the first layer has dried.

When zoning, the shape of the paneling part of the covering and the geometry of the ornament are taken into account. To give the surface a vintage look, the contours of the zones are covered with a different color. The paint can be applied with a sponge. The stripes that protrude on the door can be painted gold. Then the ornament is transferred to the surface and painted in suitable colors.

Decorating using decoupage technique

Decoupage does not require dismantling the door structure. You just need to wash and dry the coating. The opening is pre-pasted over with mounting tape. The tree is well and efficiently primed. The surface is rubbed with a simple paraffin candle and then painted. The next stage is gluing a decoupage card. It is pre-soaked in water for 12 minutes. The remaining drops of water are wiped off with a cloth. The back of the strips and the door surface are processed with PVA glue.

For decoupage the door, special decoupage cards are used.

Each piece is glued tightly. In this case, you need to ensure that folds and bubbles do not appear. If such defects are not eliminated immediately after their appearance, the coating will turn out to be uneven.... If the coating is dry, putty is applied to the edge of the components. Excess composition will need to be removed with a wet cloth or emery. A lacquered box will require a longer preparation for painting. The varnish is preliminarily removed, defects are eliminated.

If necessary, the edges of the canvas are processed, scuffs are left. This technology will give the coating a vintage style. If the step-by-step instructions are followed, then the finished decorated doors will look original with details of different shapes. They can be cut from napkins. The color of the future canvas is selected taking into account the shade of the interior of the entire room. The gluing of the material is carried out according to the above method. The finished coating is varnished with an acrylic base.

Antique decoration

An antique wooden door can be seen not only in apartments, but also in houses and offices. At the same time, decor imitating antiques is rare. It gives individuality to the door leaf. Craquelure means a two-layer application of varnish on the door. Particular attention is paid to the process of selecting the varnish - each layer should have a different composition and different drying times. Preliminary cleaning, degreasing and drying of the coating is carried out.

Craquelure gives the door the look of old wood

To age the door, you will need some materials:

  • special varnish for craquelure;
  • bituminous varnish, which gives the effect of antiquity;
  • acrylic paint.

Craquelure varnish is applied to the prepared coating. If 1 layer is dry, 2 layer is applied - bitumen varnish. It is needed to enhance contrast when using a white background. If a dark tone is applied, acrylic paint is applied. This technology is considered the best. If necessary, the craquelure varnish is replaced with simple PVA glue, vinegar, egg white or gelatin. This door renovation technique is suitable for people who like antique style.

Decor with stencils

If you have skill in the processing of wood products, you can use a more complex renewal of the canvas. To apply decor with a stencil, you will need:

  • leather;
  • glass or mirror tiles;
  • stained glass;
  • mat;
  • bamboo curtains;
  • bars;
  • veneer.

To carry out such a decor requires perseverance and good imagination. As a result, it will be possible to make an original door that will perfectly fit into any interior.

Using stencils, you can change the design of the door

The door, the canvas of which has been replaced by a stained-glass window, gives the room an unusual look. To implement this idea, water paint is used. Previously, the desired pattern is thrown onto the surface. Paint is used to transfer the design to the glass cover. This procedure is performed in a specific sequence:

  • preparation of a sketch of a drawing on paper;
  • glass processing by cleaning and degreasing;
  • substitution of the picture to the glass, followed by its stroke from the back with a thin brush;
  • receipt of the contours of the drawing in different colors of paints.

After the completion of the process, the paints should dry within 22 hours. Then a piece of glass is mounted in the door, well fixed.

Opening and Slope Updates

In addition to the door itself, the doorway is also being updated. If this is not done, then the canvas will have an unfinished look. To successfully complete the above work, it is recommended to think over the finishing step by step.

The decoration of the slopes and the opening must match the interior of the door and room

In the first step, support guides are processed. Then they are repainted in the same color as the door leaf. In case of severe wear, plasterboard sheathing is mounted on the guides. In the presence of roughness, perforated corners are used for cladding. Then the opening is repainted.

In the future, it will be required correctly. For their installation, special clamps are used that hold the platbands well. In the absence of clamps, glue or self-tapping screws are used.

If the door is updated only with the opening, and the slopes remain the same, then the decor process is considered incomplete. For finishing the slopes, different methods are used. More often, special MDF strips are used to update slopes. You can also install plasterboard slopes, which are fixed to perforated corners or glue.

Another technique for finishing the slope is plastering. This process is the most time consuming and requires experience and qualifications in this matter. Experts believe that the best solution is plastering followed by installation of pearlite slopes, which are not cheap. But in the end, you can get strong and durable slopes. Mold does not appear on them.

The situation when interior doors become unusable and lose their appearance is not uncommon. Knowing a few basic tricks on how to update an old door, you will be able to save a lot and not be wasted ahead of time. Having learned how to independently restore the surface, it will be possible not only to give the apartment a fresh look, but also to translate interesting author's ideas into reality.

Having familiarized yourself with a few useful secrets listed below, you will be able to do the repair work yourself. Do not forget about the importance of preparatory work, as this process also affects the beauty of the product. Doors can be decorated using paint, wallpaper, photo wallpaper, decoupage and other techniques.

Preparatory stage

Before transforming an old door, you should first prepare the surface and remove the previous coating. If you remove the product from the hinges in advance, it will be more convenient to carry out repair work. Place the door on a flat surface using a table or trestle. Remove from the canvas: handles, hinges, latches, locks. Replace parts with new ones if they become unusable. Remember to remove the glazing beads and glass before starting repairs.

It will be much easier to act by adhering to the following points:

  1. Heat the surface using a hot air gun to help remove old paint much faster. When the layer starts to soften, use a spatula to remove the coating.
  2. To fill up scratches and defects, it will turn out thanks to putty and putty for wood.
  3. Use different grit sandpaper. Sand the surface and sand thoroughly.
  4. It will be possible to fully update the old doors with your own hands if you distribute drying oil or stain on the surface. Such a measure will protect the canvas from moisture, and give the tree a beautiful shade.
  5. Insert the glass back into the door leaf, use new glazing beads.

If you paint the door or glue the wallpaper on the canvas, then do not forget to prime it first. Choose a special primer or liquid diluted adhesive.

Self-adhesive film

When ideas on how to paste over the old door are at a dead end, choose the simplest and most inexpensive option in the form of a self-adhesive film. It will be possible to distribute geometric stickers on the canvas, even if you do not first remove it from the hinges. Choose a film with a bright hue to create contrast with the overall tone. If you choose the stickers to match the color of the door, it will look tasteless.

Before sticking the film with a pencil, mark up where the patterns will be located. After that, apply the sticker to the canvas and use a rag to get rid of the air under the film by wiping it thoroughly. A canvas on which you can draw inscriptions with chalk will look very stylish and impressive. The cost of such a film is not cheap, but this option will look very unusual.

Dye

In the process of updating the old door, as in the first case, it is important to use another inexpensive option - paint. Here you will have to remove the door from its hinges in order to paint the door as accurately as possible. You can choose absolutely any color - it all depends on taste preferences and interior. Buy paint that is acrylic or water based as it does not have an unpleasant odor. It is better to refuse alkyd paint.

Experienced "artists" will be able to paint the door using dye in balloons. It is better for beginners to refuse such an idea, since it will be difficult to apply the material in one tone, since the dye will be sprayed on different sides. If you chose the standard paint option, then go with matte paint, not glossy paint. In the second case, the dye will only emphasize all the defects and unevenness of the canvas.

Before updating the doors without changing them, take a roller so that the painting process is as comfortable as possible. The wide roller is suitable for straight and solid doors. It is best to paint the doors in 2-3 layers, applying paint with a fairly thin ball.

How to update an old door with wallpaper: several methods

It is not difficult to glue wallpaper on the door leaf and at the same time all stages of work will not take much time. You can create a beautiful contrast if you choose a wallpaper with a color that will differ from the color of the walls. Having previously prepared the doors and primed them, it will turn out to glue the wallpaper according to the following scheme:

  1. Dilute the glue according to the instructions on the package.
  2. Spread the adhesive backing onto the canvas.
  3. Begin glueing the wallpaper carefully and remember to remove any bubbles. This will help a plastic or rubber spatula, which must be moved from the center to the edges.
  4. Use a metal strip and a wallpaper knife to trim the edges of the wallpaper.
  5. Wait until the wallpaper is completely dry to move on to the next decorating step if necessary.

Add additional decor on top of the wallpaper, if desired.

Molding

If, before updating the interior doors with your own hands (according to the photo with instructions), you purchase foam or polyurethane moldings, as well as sockets, then the decor will turn out to be quite unusual. This option will beautifully emphasize a room decorated in a classic style. Using rounded moldings and a bright background, it will turn out to decorate the room in the Provence style.

After you have had time to glue the wallpaper and it has already dried, use a pencil to make a markup where the moldings will be located. Using a tape measure, measure out how much material you need to complete the decor. Saw the edges of the molding at an angle of 45 degrees. Then take PVA or other glue, process the back surface of each element and glue along the markings. Wait for the glue to dry completely.

Wallpaper

You can give the room a completely new look if you stick photo wallpaper on the door. This finishing option will look very bright and will help transform the interior of any room. You can order wallpaper in any printing house. In this case, it will be possible to individually select the design and type of pattern. Before updating old wooden doors with your own hands in a similar way, you should adhere to the previously given instructions for gluing ordinary wallpaper.

Antique effect

In the process of updating the old door with paint and sandpaper, it will turn out to create the effect of antiquity. Before moving on to the decor, cover the canvas with dark paint in several layers. After that, on top of the previous layer, apply a light paint. When the dye is completely dry, take your sandpaper and start sanding off the top coat to let the dark paint come out.

Using the effect of craquelure, it will also be possible to visually "age" the door. To do this, use varnish or paint, which, after hardening, will visually form cracks.

Decoupage

Decoupage of an old door will look very nice if you use ordinary napkins for decoration. Before starting work, paint the canvas white. Then take a three-layer napkin with a beautiful pattern and cut out the image with scissors. Peel off the color layer and gently attach it to the door.

Dilute PVA glue and water in the desired ratio and take a brush. Apply glue to the back of the design and attach it to the door. You can repeat this procedure several times until the entire application is completed. Finally, open the surface with acrylic varnish.

Glass inserts

Another good way to update an old door with your own hands (using the photo clearly) is to try to replace the glass. Install new glass in the door leaf or update the decor of the old one. The stained glass technique will look unusual.

Before painting the doors and creating an unusual stained glass window, prepare the following tools:

  • stained glass paints;
  • gloves;
  • circuit;
  • marker.

It is most convenient to paint glass in a horizontal position. Using a marker, draw the outlines, and then paint in the middle on both sides with paints. You can complete the whole picture if you glue small stones or pieces of glass. These details should also be outlined in black marker on top of the drawing.

Before you refine the old door with your own hands, take this recommendation into service. Cut small holes in the door leaf and insert small multi-colored glass in the middle. This method will allow you to create a beautiful glass composition. This option is suitable if the door leaf is made of solid wood.

Stencil decor

A simple and at the same time beautiful option is the design of the door using a stencil pattern. You can prepare the stencil yourself, or you can buy it in a construction (stationery) store ready-made. Take heavy paper and cut out the pattern you like. You can also prepare a self-adhesive film in the same way.

First, pre-process the door, then take a stencil and gently roll over the top with a paint roller. Spray paint is also suitable for decoration. Make sure that the template fits snugly to the surface of the door, as otherwise unnecessary smudges and stains will appear on the canvas.

Pre-paint the door white, and then use stencil patterns. Black and golden patterns will look very beautiful on a light background. When updating the interior doors with your own hands, also use a dark background and light stencil patterns on the contrary.

Art drawing

Art lovers can pay attention to such an unusual option for decorating doors. It is enough to first paint the doors in one tone, and then use additional paints and brushes for painting. The drawing can extend beyond the doorway by 10-20 cm and be a beautiful continuation of the composition.

If you don't have much talent, but you want to restore the old door with your own hands, as you want in the photo, then take a pencil first. Draw a sketch with a pencil, and then proceed to paint. Cover the floor and walls with a protective film beforehand to prevent splashing. In order to create a memorable design, give the children paints in their hands, where they can show their creativity on the canvas. Such art will give a sea of positive memories and emotions.

Textile

In the case when there are no ideas of what can be done with the old door, but you really want to design it unusually, the option with textiles is ideal. This is a very time-consuming process, but the door design will turn out to be truly homely and cozy. Before proceeding to the arrangement of the door leaf, first buy the fabric with the patterns you like. Avoid too light colors, as spots and defects will very quickly appear on such a surface.

Choose a material in the store that will blend in color as organically as possible with the rest of the decor. Use double-sided masking tape in order to glue the textiles as conveniently as possible. Spread the tape around the entire perimeter of the door. Make sure that there are no folds or shreds around the edges of the door.

Door lamination

You will be able to update the appearance of the room if you apply the film on the door yourself at home. To do this, buy a self-adhesive film with an adhesive backing from a hardware store. First, pre-prepare the door leaf and cover any scratches and irregularities. Remove the old paint layer if necessary.

When gluing the film, do not forget that it connects to the surface very quickly, so you have to work very carefully to prevent bubbles and irregularities. Apply the film gradually by millimeter, use a plastic wallpaper spatula to prevent defects.

Having chosen one of the above options, it will not be difficult to update the door yourself at home. It is important not to forget about the rest of the interior of the apartment when decorating and pre-protect it with a film.

Doors play an important role in interior design. There are many different models in stores, but high-quality ones cost a lot of money, and you usually don't want to look at cheap ones. There is a good option - to update the old doors with your own hands. There are many techniques, and not the most difficult ones, that allow you to fix the situation for little money.

Preparation

Whichever way you choose to update the old interior door, you will need to carry out a number of preparatory work. Usually old painted specimens are going to decorate. Painting is usually amateur, so there are more than enough irregularities, sagging and other small defects. All of them need to be aligned.

We remove the door leaf from the hinges, lay it on a flat surface. You can - on the trestle or table. We take putty on wood (even if they are from or) and we cover all holes, chips and depressions with it. After drying, proceed to the next stage - grinding.

We take sandpaper with a coarse grain and a fine one. We process, achieving a flat surface. If you work by hand, it takes a lot of time and effort. With a hand sander, work moves faster. If painting is planned further, we try to achieve the most even surface. If you plan to decorate with wallpaper, fabric, self-adhesive film, you may not bring it to the ideal, but it should be exactly.

Next, remove the dust, wash off the remnants with water and diluted dishwashing detergent. We dry it. Further actions depend on the selected update method. If you are going to glue fabric or wallpaper of any kind, you can prime the surface (with liquid diluted glue or a special primer). After the primer has dried, you can glue the selected type of decor or apply paint. By the way, if you are going to paint the doors, the paint must be of the same type that was before, otherwise you will have to remove everything to a clean base, and this is very difficult.

Refresh old doors with wallpaper

The easiest and most affordable way to make old doors attractive is to use wallpaper. They do not have to be in tune with the walls, although this option is not excluded. First, we prepare the canvas as described above, and then you can start finishing.

The procedure for pasting doors with wallpaper is as follows:

Wallpaper

Modern photo printing allows you to transfer volumetric images to paper. It will turn out very nicely. And you can print any image of your choice. In general, any. Usually advertising agencies are engaged in photo printing, sometimes printing houses. Go there, explaining what you need (have a USB flash drive with the selected pattern and the exact dimensions of the canvas on which you want to print the image). Having received the required image, we glue it on the door according to the method. described above.

Wallpaper with moldings

If you stick foam or polyurethane moldings, sockets on plain wallpaper, the style will completely change. Doors of this type are suitable for classic interiors or rooms; when using a colorful background and another shape of moldings (with rounds), they can be decorated in the Provence style.

The work is no different from the sequence described above. We take the prepared doors with a leveled surface, spread with glue, glue the wallpaper.

It is not difficult to achieve good results by leveling the panels with a rubber roller, but a certain amount of small air bubbles remains. To remove them, they take a special plastic spatula (they are in any hardware store), and they are finally removed from the center to the edges. Also, this spatula is used to iron the wallpaper joint, if any. It is quite possible to achieve that the joint will not be visible.

Cut the edges of the wallpaper with a wallpaper knife. This should be done until the wallpaper has softened from the glue, otherwise they can then "reach" for the blade and break. We leave to dry. After 12 hours or in a day - depending on the temperature and humidity in the room - you can continue decorating the old door.

Gently, with a simple pencil, we apply the markup. When everything is drawn, measure the required length of the pieces of molding with a tape measure. Cut off, saw the edges at an angle of 45 °. We take a suitable glue (PVA can be used) and carefully spread the back surface of the cut elements, glue them according to the markings, and leave to dry.

By the same principle, you can update old doors so that the style will be different. See a few examples in the photo gallery.

Beautiful wallpaper with a pattern in tone is the secret of the attractiveness of this door decor
Moldings were glued to the painted doors, which were then painted with "gold" paint

Designer decoration of old doors

If you are interested in design things, you can try turning it into an art object. The good news is that there is no need to cook it: the bumps and bumps will disappear under the design.

The decorating process begins with the manufacture of papier-mâché. Take the egg trays, spray with water, knead with your fist, trying to level the surface. In the process, they will tear, this is normal and even good - we need small pieces. These almost flat fragments, on liquid nails or using a glue gun, are glued to the surface in random order.

Lids, rings, a small perfume bottle, a small non-working computer mouse, the remains of a mosaic, everything that comes to hand are used. There will be a lot of trash, you can collect ahead of time.

When most of the surface is "decorated", we take acrylic silver paint in cans (2 pieces are needed) and paint over the decor well. When choosing a paint, it is better to take an expensive one, in particular a German one, so that it does not pour out in sweat.

Decorating doors using decoupage technique

A romantic or "cheerful" door design can be done using decoupage. For work you will need:

  • napkins with a suitable pattern;
  • PVA glue (about 200 ml);
  • natural bristle brush;
  • acrylic lacquer.

Preparing the canvas, as described earlier. We prime and paint in a suitable color. After the paint has dried, we start decorating. We take a pack of napkins we liked, separate the top layer, which is with a picture.

Tear napkins with a pattern lengthwise into three strips. We tear, we do not cut. We want a slightly jagged edge. Two stripes on one side have an even edge, we put them to one side. We break the middle part into squares. The best option if they are with a side of 3-4 cm.

We take glue, a brush, a small container. In it we mix PVA with water in equal proportions.

Next, we proceed to decorate the door with our own hands. We take a strip with an even edge, apply it to the area to be decorated (in this case, this is the center of the door leaf). Dip the brush in glue, with it we begin to smooth the fragment in different directions. Wrinkles are formed, but this is just not bad - the finish will turn out to be more textured, so it is not particularly necessary to align them. Wet wipes are very delicate and elastic, remember this when working, act carefully.

Gradually make a frame with one smooth edge. The second turns out to be carelessly torn.

Filling in the middle of the "frame"

When the entire surface is filled, we leave it for a day - we wait until the PVA dries. Next, take an acrylic varnish and cover our decor with a soft brush. To prevent it from smelling, we take a water-based varnish. It is a little more expensive, but it doesn't have a headache.

The beauty of decoupage is that we get beautiful things at low cost.

Decorating the door with self-adhesive foil

Perhaps the easiest way is to update old doors with self-adhesive. All you need:

  • the film itself,
  • a spray bottle containing soap and water;
  • plastic spatula or soft rag;
  • a sharp knife (wallpaper can be used).

This film is available in different versions - there is a monochromatic matte or glossy, there is a monochromatic one with holographic patterns, wood imitation, there are even special doors for pasting with printed photo.

Regardless of the type of film, it is glued in the same way. In this case, they decided to update the old doors using the option with photo printing. One moment: before pasting, we remove handles, latches and other door accessories.

For the decor to be of high quality, the surface of the door must be clean, even and smooth. If you sanded it before doing this, try gluing on a small piece of film. If it sticks well, everything is fine. If it doesn't "stick", the doors will have to be primed and then painted or varnished to create a smooth surface.

We take a spray bottle and evenly wet the surface of the door.

We shave the film, remove the protective layer from one of the corners, we also spray it. So, wetting, we separate the protective paper from the upper part along the entire width of the film.

You should get a strip 15-20 cm wide. Do not remove any more so that the film does not stick to the canvas. We apply the unsticked part to the upper edge of the door leaf (or the area to be decorated), it quickly sticks. Try to immediately apply it evenly, but the position can be corrected - for this we wetted the surface so that the film could be moved. If you pull it, it moves a little.

After making sure that the canvas lies flat, take a plastic spatula (for wallpaper) and smooth the surface with it, moving from the center to the edges. The task is to remove all the air. Since the surface is wet, it is not difficult - water displaces air.

The rest is simple. We pull down the protective paper, peeling off the strip, glue it and so on - to the very bottom of the door. If you have glued the upper part for a long time, the lower one may dry out, therefore periodically check if the doors are dry, if necessary, spray again.

After the entire film is glued, cut off the excess at the edges with a sharp knife. All that remains after this is to install the fittings.

Door decor with stencils

Old doors can be renovated with applied drawings. The only pity is that not everyone has artistic talents. But in this case, the problem is solved using stencils. You can draw them yourself, or you can find the image you like, print it on thick paper, cut out the drawing with a sharp knife, leaving jumpers in places. So the stencil is ready.

The disadvantage of a paper stencil is that it does not last long. If you need "long-playing" it must be transferred to a transparent dense film. In more detail, the technology for cutting a stencil for door decoration is shown in the video.

The drawing can be anything. Both geometric and floral, stylized images of animals, birds, cartoon characters are popular.

Everyone needs to update interior and exterior doors. There are two ways to solve the problem: buy new ones or. The second is quite realistic to carry out without contacting specialists. In order to need to think over the design, the way to implement the idea, familiarize yourself with the order of work, stock up on the necessary materials and implement your plan.

We think over the design

There are many ways, the choice of which largely depends on what material it is made of: wood, chipboard, MDF, veneered or with glass inserts. You can:

  • paint in whole or in part, drawing
  • varnish, stain, tint;
  • veneer;
  • paste over the door with wallpaper, their fragments, vinyl stickers;
  • decorate with moldings;
  • apply aging varnish (craquelure method);
  • insert glass, including painted, frosted, corrugated.

As a result, the cheapest doors can become an exclusive author's product.

Preparing for the implementation of the project

To remake old doors, you need the following tools:

  • screwdriver or universal screwdriver - for dismantling and opening, hanging and adjusting hinges and handles;
  • spatula, construction knife - for cleaning the surface from old paint;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw - for cutting openings in the door, if the project provides for the insertion of glass or a sheet of plywood;
  • sandpaper (ideally a grinder) - for cleaning surfaces and edges;
  • brushes (flat), rollers (foam rubber or velor with fine nap), rags, sponges - for priming and painting;
  • self-tapping screws, wallpaper nails - fasteners;
  • glazing beads and wooden slats - if necessary, fixing glass or plywood inserts into the canvas.

The material for alteration is selected for each specific case individually. To restore old interior doors, they begin with their dismantling and preparation of the base:

  1. Prepare a place for the conduct of work - a horizontal surface sufficient to accommodate a door leaf on it and covered with a non-rigid material.
  2. hinges, removing from the opening, lay on the prepared surface, unscrew the accessories - handles, hinges, locks and latches.
  3. If the interior door is with glass and a replacement is planned, then it must be carefully removed, having previously loosened the glazing beads.
  4. Clean the surface from the old coating and decoration elements - a layer of paint, glass inserts, cracked veneer and the like.
  5. Sand with sandpaper, remove small particles.
  6. Degrease and prime the surface, wait until dry. If there are no visible large defects on the canvas, then the door is ready for finishing.

Sealing small dents and big holes

If the doors are very old or have been subjected to impacts that left holes and dents on the surface, then they must be restored. Damage is filled with special wax or putty, which subsequently harden. To work you need:

  • hard furniture wax, matched in tone;
  • soft wax;
  • retouching felt-tip pen;
  • soldering iron or special gas wax melter;
  • lint-free microfiber cloth;
  • fixing varnish.

The order of restoration work:

  1. Trim the edges of the damage along the contour, trimming them.
  2. Fill the dent with hard wax by melting with a soldering iron and pouring into the notch. Wait until it hardens, remove excess with a knife to level the wax to the surface.
  3. Retouch the color with soft wax and a fine felt-tip pen.
  4. Fix the result with varnish.

It is not necessary to retouch the defect to match the color of the surface, if in the future the restored area is planned to be glued or painted.

If the hole is of impressive size, then for work instead of hard wax, putty on wood is used.

In case of through holes in a hollow door leaf, the restoration process is as follows:

  1. Trim the edges of the pothole, giving the edge a smooth shape.
  2. The hole is filled with soft paper along the edges - a kind of foam limiter, which is poured in at the next stage.
  3. Blowing foam into the hole.
  4. After waiting for hardening, cut off the excess.
  5. Putty the surface of the foam and door, leveling with a spatula.
  6. Sand the surface with sandpaper.
  7. They are primed, painted.

Decorating methods: Coloring

The most common way to transform an old door is to paint it. It is important not to be mistaken with the choice of color - an unsuccessful staining will only emphasize that an outdated door needs to be replaced. The color is chosen to match the walls or in contrast.

Coloring is performed on a previously prepared (cleaned, primed surface). Work with a brush or roller. As a rule, the paint is applied in 2 layers: with the second, the surface is coated after the first has dried. The following types of paints are acceptable for use for these purposes:

Acrylic. Eco-friendly water-based. They dissolve with water, which evaporates upon drying, leaving insoluble resins, therefore, the paint is not washed off in the future, and the surface can be washed.

Oil. Popular in the past, durable and scratch-resistant, these paints have lost some of their relevance. They dry for a long time - at least 24 hours, they are toxic in liquid form. Dissolve with linseed oil.

Alkyd. Water-resistant enamels resistant to solvents after drying. Dissolved with white spirit or solvent. They also dry for a long time - a day. A common group of alkyd enamels is PF-115.

Advice. If, during the restoration of doors, the choice fell on their painting with alkyd enamel, then it is not recommended to use a foam roller for work, since it melts under the influence of solvents and forms lumps on the surface. It is better to use a velor attachment or a fur one with a small nap.

Nitroenamels. They dry quickly - about 1 hour, but their pungent odor can persist for up to several days. Suitable for use on wood, chipboard, MDF, plywood. The solvent used is acetone.

Drawing

The painted surface can be decorated by drawing. The easiest way is the screen printing method.

  1. Print a sample of the drawing you like on the printer.
  2. Placed on a more durable material (for example, a dense plastic blank), cut along the contour.
  3. Attach the stencil to the door with tape.
  4. Apply paint to the open part of the stencil (with a brush, sponge or use a spray can of paint), making sure that it does not fall under it in unintended places.
  5. When the paint dries, remove the stencil.

A variant of screen printing is “anti-stencil” technology, when a cut out pattern is placed on a surface and the area around it is painted.

An original solution can be a decor with a geometric ornament, which is easy to apply using paint or vinyl stickers: rhombuses, stripes, triangles, herringbones, polka dots and just contrasting lines give the canvas an extraordinary effect.

Tinting

Real ones are high, and a layer of paint hides their true dignity. The surest way to ennoble the interior is to tint a wooden door. Toning is the treatment of wood with compounds (oils or resins) that preserve the appearance of texture and fibers, but give them a rich color. If the door was previously painted, then it will be necessary to remove the top layer and sand the wood:

  1. Remove old paint from the surface. This can be done mechanically (with a spatula) or chemically (with special compounds).
  2. Sand with medium-grit sandpaper or a sander.
  3. Tinted with wood stain or varnish.
  4. It is not recommended to apply the stain with a brush, it is better to make a swab out of a cloth, dip it in the stain, squeeze it onto a rough sheet of cardboard. Tint the wooden surface with light circular movements, avoiding abundant dotted spots on the canvas.

The varnish is applied evenly with a brush. Toning is used not only for, in this way you can refine the front door.

Glass processing

Interior doors with glass are a modern trend. To renew the glass, you need to take out the old transparent one and insert a more up-to-date sample: matte, with a pattern, photo printing, corrugated, colored. If the door leaf is deaf, then you first have to cut the opening, and then glaze it. Installation instructions:

  1. Mark the place of the canvas.
  2. Drill a hole about 1 cm in the corner of the marking so that the jigsaw can fit in it.
  3. Cut the opening.
  4. Along the perimeter, make grooves-recesses for glass or nail slats that will hold it.

To insert glass, you must:

  1. Measure the opening in the door leaf that is being prepared for glazing.
  2. Cut the glass, taking into account that it should "sit" in the opening, entering approximately 0.5 cm on each side. For work you need a glass cutter and a metal ruler.
  3. Secure with glazing beads by driving wallpaper nails into them or screwing in small screws.

Restoration, renovation and decoration of interior doors is a creative process that brings positive emotions and satisfaction. The interior is transformed at the lowest cost, and in some cases an exclusive product is created.

It is quite expensive to change old doors to new ones, since the interior doors to the toilet and the bathroom are mainly made in the same style, that is, if you change, then all at once.

Therefore, we offer 4 master classes on how to update wooden doors with your own hands with photos and detailed instructions. And not just paint, but implement interesting design solutions!

The easiest and easiest upgrade method is to make beautiful geometric door stickers... To do this, you need a self-adhesive film, preferably contrasting with the color of the door.

  1. Make a preliminary marking of the pattern on the surface with a pencil.
  2. Stick the film and press and rub the air under the film with a rag.
  3. This method does not require removing the door leaf from the hinges; it can also be done in an upright position.

ATTENTION: Only please do not cover the doors completely with a foil to match the structure of the tree! It looks awful and old-fashioned! Better take a single color film and geometry.

You can paste over the doors with a one-color film under chalk drawing, it is not cheap, but it looks impressive. And change the labels every day!

Painting wooden doors

Also, this method is not laborious and requires a minimum of costs! You can paint the interior doors in absolutely any color! Here's how to do it in detail. But painting requires the removal of doors with a hinge.

What paint we paint:

  • Any for interior and exterior woodwork, water-based and acrylic-based- it is absolutely odorless! You don't need alkyd paint!
  • Take matte rather than glossy. Glossy will highlight all the irregularities on your surface.
  • Paint in a bottle is dangerous because if you paint for the first time, you are unlikely to paint exactly !! Also, if you are going to paint directly in the apartment, keep in mind that it "flies" in all directions. Therefore, beginners are better off starting with regular paint and a roller.

How to paint and painting technique of the door:

  • Solid and even doors - only wide roller! We paint in 2-3 layers with a very thin coating.
  • If the doors are with panels, then first we paint all the grooves with a thin brush, and then we make a full cover with a roller.

Door with cover strips

A door with embossed overhead strips looks much more original and interesting than a regular flat one. Making these changes is pretty simple and doesn't take long. For the money, the cost is only slightly more than just painting, and significantly cheaper than buying a new door.

Necessary materials:

  • Door
    Overhead wooden planks
    Roulette
    Long ruler and building angle
    Pencil
    Saw
  • Miter box
    Liquid nails or other wood glue
    Scotch
  • Paint (white here)
    Building level (not necessary, but will help a lot to check how smoothly you install the overhead planks)

Step-by-step instruction:

Step 1: paint the door. First you need to repaint the old wooden door in your chosen color, in this case white. Leave to dry.

On top of the dried paint, you need to mark the fastening of the overhead wooden planks. To do this, draw lines with a pencil (not pressing hard on it) and a ruler, to get perpendicular lines use a building corner.

In this case, the drawing consists of two rectangles located one above the other.

  • In the photo below you can see all the calculations that show how much to retreat: 5 "(about 13 cm) everywhere except the bottom of the door, where the distance from the edge to the line is 6" (about 15 cm).
  • You can make other indents, depending on the size of the door (for example, if you decide to update the cabinet doors in the same way, you need to step back clearly less).

Step 3: cut out the planks

Now you need to cut the strips of the appropriate size (measure the length of the outlined lines). If you do not have the necessary tools at home, this can be done right at the hardware store for a small surcharge. If you do it yourself, then you will need not only a saw, but also a miter box to cut the ends of the planks at an angle of 45 degrees.

Step 4: fix the planks

Place all planks on the marked lines. Make sure that they are all the correct length and that they converge evenly at the corners.

  1. Now lift each plank in turn, apply glue to it and put it back in place. If you suddenly see excess glue from under the bar, you can remove it with a damp paper towel.
  2. The glue must dry for about 24 hours... In order for the strips to adhere evenly and securely, attach them with tape during drying, fixing their position and pressing down.
  3. More scotch tape ensures a secure fit.

Note: you can glue already painted strips, or glue, and then paint; it is also possible not to paint the door at the beginning (skip step 1), but to do this together with the glued strips.

Step 5: install the door

After the glue dries, you need to carefully peel off the tape from the door, it is better to use masking tape, which does not leave any traces.

Now the altered door remains in place and the handle is attached. And you're done!

Door with cover panels

This master class differs from the previous one in that here we will not only fix the strips, but also fill the inside of the doors with overhead panels.

Necessary materials:

  • Plastic panels (we make such panels here, but wooden ones are also possible)
  • Roulette
  • Pencil
  • Building level
  • Construction adhesive
  • Latex paint
  • Screwdriver
  • Masking tape
  • Hand saw
  • Wood screws
  • Safety glasses and earmuffs
  • Putty for plastic
  • Putty knife
  • Sanding machine (or sandpaper)

Step-by-step instruction:

Step 1: Correct the door defects. If the door is very old and has some defects that cannot be hidden by painting (for example, the top coating has chipped off in places, or there are deep scratches), then initially you need to remove them and make the surface even.

  • To do this, apply wood putty and let it dry,
  • then equalize surface by sander go sandpaper.

Step 2: outline the location of the planks

The marking here will be the same as in the previous case, that is, we retreat 5 "(about 13 cm) everywhere, except for the bottom of the door, where we leave 6" (about 15 cm).

ADVICE: If there is no long ruler, lines can be drawn using a building level.

Step 3: fix the panel

Apply construction adhesive to the back of the plastic panels.

Place the panels on the door and check that they are correctly positioned using a spirit level. The sides of the panels should be clearly parallel to the edges of the door.

Press down on the panel so that it sits firmly against the door and adheres securely. Secure this entire structure around the perimeter with small screws using a screwdriver.

Step 4: fix the planks

Again, you can either cut the planks to the correct size in the store, or do it yourself using a saw and a miter box. The planks should surround the panels around the perimeter, adhering tightly to them.

Note: the strips can initially be glued with construction glue, and then fixed with screws.

Here's what should happen at this stage:

Step 5: paint the door. Now all that remains is to paint the door and leave it to dry completely.

Now compare the door before and after the renovation:

The overlay relief makes the door more stylish and affects the appearance of the entire room as a whole:

Don't be afraid to change old things and give them a different look. Give them the opportunity to serve you again, but in a new guise!
