Liquid wallpaper description. Liquid wallpaper is a modern "clothing" for walls. Preparation of the working mixture

To be honest, this decorative coating bears little resemblance to ordinary wallpaper, from a distance it looks more like a stone, and close up - like a dense felt. To be honest, it is not so liquid - it is sold as a dry mixture, but is applied as a plaster mass. To be honest, only here they call it "liquid wallpaper" ...

So what is this thing, why liquid, and even wallpaper? In fact, for the first time the material appeared on the Russian market at a time when not only vinyl silk-screen printing, but in general any alternative to paper finishing was new. The word "wallpaper" was clearly associated with the majority of our fellow citizens with paper rolls, which are so dreary to glue on uneven, "gaseous" walls. And here the main ingredient in the raw mix is paper (more precisely, natural cellulose fibers), and it is elementary to apply it on vertical surfaces, horizontal, even on oblique curves - “just add water”. The advantageous difference is obvious; when promoting a new product, it was a sin for manufacturers not to use this comparison. So they used it.

Beyond paper

Classic "liquid wallpaper" consists of a binder (acrylic dispersion or CMC glue), natural fibers (not only cellulose, but also cotton or silk) and a dye (environmentally friendly, water-based). The application technique is the same as for plasters.

That is why foreign manufacturers usually do not single out the product and classify it as decorative plasters, most of which do not contain fibers. The confusion of terms is also facilitated by the fact that creative-minded manufacturers are increasingly diversifying the composition. Colored flocks, wood, quartz or marble chips may be present for special effects. A common attribute - mica sequins - are usually sold in a separate package; if desired, they can be added to the mass during kneading.

Warm walls

"Liquid wallpaper" is intended exclusively for interior decoration. They are environmentally friendly and are great for living spaces. Moreover, from the point of view of design, they are most appropriate in the bedroom and nursery - where most of all you want to create a feeling of warmth and comfort. And from the point of view of physical properties - in a living room and a room given over to a home theater. After all, this fibrous coating is distinguished by increased noise insulation properties and, moreover, improves the acoustic characteristics of the room.

There is a choice, but ...

But the manufacturers of the original finish can be counted on one hand. Russian Silk Plaster offers one and a half dozen names (textures) of "liquid wallpaper" - each is possible in a dozen colors. Cost of 1 sq. m of finished coating - from $ 2. A similar assortment and quality of products from the Silkcoat and Koza line from the Turkish manufacturer Bayramyx. The price is slightly higher - from $ 3 per sq. m. For the decoration of VIP-interiors, materials from French manufacturers are recommended. For example, the Senideco company produces Sakadeco decorative coating, which contains natural cotton fibers (about $ 25 / sq. M). A square meter of Fibers de Cotex (RMD, France), also containing natural cotton, costs about $ 70.

Why are they good

"Liquid wallpaper" has a number of advantages, both over traditional wallpaper and over decorative plasters. Firstly, it is not required to carefully level the wall before applying the "liquid wallpaper". Secondly, it is comfortable to work with the material: no dust, no smell. It is applied without joints and easily fills the gaps at the junction of the wall with the window frame, platband, plinth, switch. Due to its plasticity, it is convenient for finishing arches, bay windows, columns and other architectural delights of a curved shape. A certain elasticity remains even after drying, so that if the house shrinks, the finish will not crack. Thirdly, the microporous structure of "liquid wallpaper" provides increased heat and sound insulation, but at the same time the surface remains "breathable".

The coating does not attract dust and does not absorb odors. When burning, in case of fire, it does not emit toxic gases.

High art

As already mentioned, the palette of "liquid wallpaper" is quite large. Using various colors and shades, you can create spectacular panels. They do it like this. First, the outline of the drawing is applied to the prepared base (if you are an artist only in the shower, use a ready-made stencil). Then they take up a plastic spatula. Fragments adjacent to each other must be carefully, individually dried (this takes about a day), otherwise the colors may mix along the edges. First, a mass of the same color is applied to certain areas and dried; the next day - another, and so on. Each time the edges are trimmed exactly according to the pattern, and a mass of a different color is applied 8-joint. To make the joints of the multi-colored fragments look neat, when applying the next tone, it is better to glue the edges of the dried fragments with masking tape.

Maintenance and repair

Cleaning in a room decorated with "liquid wallpaper" is, in principle, the same as in a room covered with ordinary paper. It is enough to vacuum the walls 1-2 times a month.

This must be done carefully so as not to damage the coating. It is not recommended to wash it with water, but if varnish is applied on top, gentle wet cleaning is possible. Do not throw away the remnants of the dry mix after the repair. If necessary, a damaged piece of trim can be easily replaced. The desired area is moistened with warm water, removed with a knife and a new mixture of a similar composition is applied to this place. True, the color of the patch may differ slightly, especially if the windows of the room face the sunny side: as you know, paper walls "fade" over time.

When planning renovations, many modern people prefer creative and radical materials. Liquid wallpaper is a relatively new product for wall and ceiling decoration. The features of their use will be discussed in our article.

Various materials are used for cladding the premises. Perhaps the most common are wallpapers. The scope of their application is calculated in a variety of interiors, ranging from living rooms to administrative and office premises.

But sometimes, in practice, you can face the fact that not every surface is suitable for gluing wallpaper. It is impossible to use the finishing material in rooms that are characterized by:

  • high humidity;
  • constant temperature difference.

It is also impractical to stick to wallpaper when you need to finish:

  • arches;
  • bay windows;
  • fireplace air ducts;
  • columns;
  • other interior elements.

It is quite logical that this fact prompted manufacturers of finishing materials to develop a new type of wallpaper. Thanks to the use of liquid wallpaper in the interior, the problem was solved with such seemingly unsuitable places for cladding.

At its core, this finishing material is natural fibers (cotton, silk or cellulose), which are mixed with a binder (usually CMC glue) and a water-based dye. To create a spectacular appearance, the following can be added to the composition:

  • mica luster;
  • quartz or marble chips;
  • colored flock.

Based on the components that make up the liquid wallpaper, their main purpose is the interior decoration of the premises. If you focus on the design and colors of liquid wallpaper, then it is best to decorate the bedroom and nursery with them.

Practically speaking, the most optimal place to use fiber mat is in the living room where the home theater is installed. After all, liquid wallpaper has:

  • excellent soundproofing qualities;
  • the ability to improve the acoustic performance of a room.

There are several types of wallpaper, differing in the structure of the fibers and the thickness of the applied layer. If you need to get a thin layer, then 2-3 mm thick wallpaper is used. When it is envisaged to create a dense fabric covering, then the application of wallpaper is carried out with a thickness of 4-5 mm. After drying, liquid wallpaper is a lot like solid foam.

Advantages and disadvantages of liquid wallpaper

Like any finishing material, liquid wallpaper has its own pluses and minuses. In addition to excellent sound insulation properties, a variety of colors and the ability to apply to any surface, which we have already mentioned, liquid wallpaper is characterized by:

  • absolute environmental friendliness;
  • quick and easy application on both horizontal and vertical surfaces;
  • good thermal insulation properties;
  • the ability to create a seamless surface that does not crack when the built house shrinks;
  • excellent wear resistance and durability;
  • antistatic qualities;
  • excellent adhesion;
  • resistance to temperature extremes;
  • the ability to hide wall / ceiling defects (seams, irregularities).

If varnish is not applied over the wallpaper, this allows the tiled surface to "breathe".

The disadvantages of using liquid wallpaper include:

  • hygroscopicity (if it is planned to carry out wet cleaning, then the wallpaper should be varnished);
  • if there are animals in the house, the probability of damage to the fragment increases;
  • their cost exceeds the price of ordinary wallpaper;
  • relatively long drying time (up to 72 hours).

Assortment of products

Buying liquid wallpaper is not a huge problem these days. A number of manufacturers are engaged in their manufacture. In particular, the finishing materials of the French companies Senideco and Fibers de cotex are very popular. They are used to decorate most of the VIP interiors.

A fairly solid assortment of high quality liquid wallpaper is also produced by a manufacturer from Turkey by Bayramyx. But all the products of foreign companies have a significant disadvantage for our compatriots - the price of liquid wallpaper is quite high.

For this reason, many will be interested in the products of the Russian company Silk Plaster, which offers about 20 varieties of liquid wallpaper and more than a hundred colors and textures. The most affordable products are brands:

  • "Relief";
  • "Economy";
  • "Shine";
  • "Standard".

For those homeowners who prefer aesthetic characteristics, regardless of the cost of products, liquid wallpaper is suitable:

  • "Victoria";
  • "Prestige";
  • West;
  • East.

Creative people who put exotic first place will be interested in brands:

  • "North";
  • Air Line;
  • "Silk Monolith";
  • "South";
  • Ecodecor.

In order for the liquid wallpaper in the photo and in reality to absolutely coincide, in the process of work it is necessary to adhere to the recommendations of the product manufacturer. Instructions for correct use are attached to the products.

Finishing material application technology

Conventionally, wall cladding with liquid wallpaper consists of four main stages:

  • surface preparation;
  • preparation of the solution;
  • its application;
  • varnishing wallpaper.

Preparatory work

The following requirements are imposed on the surface to be finished:

  • the base must be durable;
  • there should be no falling off areas on it;
  • low level of moisture absorption by the surface;
  • the base must withstand moisture penetration without changing the color of the wallpaper.

Preparatory work involves the implementation of such sequential operations:

  • removal of old coating (paper wallpaper, putty or plaster);
  • filling large cracks;
  • priming with deep penetration compounds;
  • roughening the surface.

Do not use Ceresit CT 17 primer for treating the base. It causes yellow stains on the wallpaper. If there are fittings or other metal objects in the wall or ceiling, such areas are covered with insoluble water paint (latex or oil paint, PF enamel).

The surface is roughened with a starter filler or unpolished plaster. If there is a smooth surface, it will be necessary to treat it with a primer mixed with quartz dust. Due to the rough surface, liquid wallpaper will not drag behind the trowel and be applied evenly without tearing.

Preparation of the working mixture

After purchasing liquid wallpaper, you need to shake the bag with them several times. This breaks up the existing lumps, making it easier to make the mixture.

Immediately you need to take care of the correct selection of containers for the preparation of liquid wallpaper. She must be:

  • round;
  • with a diameter of 0.4-0.6 m;
  • depth 0.2-0.3 m.

Ordinary kitchen utensils are also fine, since liquid wallpaper is easy to clean. Only clean water is used. Its temperature should be comfortable for humans. You will have to stir it manually.

The process of mixing liquid wallpaper itself can be done using several packages. But don't overdo it. In the presence of a large amount of finishing material, it is more difficult to prepare a high-quality solution. Usually several packages are mixed when using materials of different color shades.

The technology for preparing liquid wallpaper provides for the following actions:

  • a bag of dry mixture is poured into a container;
  • wallpaper is mixed with 5 liters of water;
  • the solution is thoroughly mixed;
  • it should turn out to be homogeneous;
  • to create a mixture of optimal consistency, water is poured into the solution in small doses.

In consistency, liquid wallpaper is made similar to heavy cream. They shouldn't be:

  • too liquid and run off to the floor;
  • too thick and difficult to apply to the surface.

Typically, a normal mixture is obtained using up to 6 liters of water per bag of dry material.

Applying wallpaper to the surface

For this process, a smooth surfaced spatula made of stainless steel (or plexiglass) is used. When working, the tool should be held at an angle to the surface. The mixture of material should come out from under the spatula in the direction of its movement.

The coating created does not need to be pressed. It should be loose. You do not need to press on the spatula, since the surface will not turn out to be embossed, and the consumption of wallpaper will increase significantly. Usually one bag is enough for a plot of 1–2 mm thick with an area of 4 m². Material consumption may increase slightly if there are irregularities and corners.

After finishing a certain area, it is necessary to check the coating for the presence of bumps, sagging, gaps and tears. They should be absent. If there are still defects, they must be eliminated. The use of liquid wallpaper just provides for the possibility of correcting all inaccuracies in the process of their application.

Another important nuance. To prevent the appearance of joints and seams, liquid wallpaper is applied continuously from one corner to another. Drying of the finishing material occurs naturally.

Veneer varnishing

Notable for its low moisture-resistant properties, liquid wallpaper in some cases should be covered with a protective layer. This is especially true when using the material in the kitchen or when lining the ceiling in the bathroom.

You can increase the moisture resistance of liquid wallpaper by using acrylic varnish, which, after drying, forms a hard, vapor-permeable and water-repellent coating.

Finished surface varnishing can be carried out in two ways:

  • by adding acrylic varnish to the mixed solution;
  • by applying it to dried liquid wallpaper.

The consumption rate of varnish will accordingly be:

  • 1 liter per 20 m²;
  • 1 liter per 4 m².

Repair of finishing materials

Sometimes there is a need (carrying out repair work, replacing electrical wiring, etc.) in the partial removal of wallpaper from a certain area. For this, a spray bottle is used. With the help of clean water, the desired area is moistened. Using a spatula, the moistened wallpaper is removed into a clean plastic container.

After repair work:

  • cracks and potholes are repaired;
  • the site is treated with two layers of primer;
  • all extreme parts of the coating are wetted with a spray gun.

The liquid wallpaper that has been removed is mixed with clean water to the desired consistency. They are applied in the same way as described above. Moreover, the applied edges of the coating are aligned with the adjacent edges. Once dry, the repair site should not be visible.

In this article: the composition of liquid wallpaper; characteristics of decorative plaster - pros and cons; the technology of applying liquid wallpaper requires special care; how to make a panel yourself using liquid wallpaper; why you should buy decorative plaster of famous brands.

Composition and characteristics of liquid wallpaper

Unlike roll wallpaper, this finishing material takes on a flat shape after being applied to the wall surface and in its original state looks like a dry free-flowing substance packed in kilogram plastic bags. Before direct use, the contents of the bag are brought into a moist state by introducing a metered portion of water.

The composition of liquid wallpaper includes silk and cotton fibers, cellulose, special dyes, fungicides of natural origin, acrylic dispersion (binder), plasticizers and components that enhance the decorative qualities of the wall covering - wool fibers, mother of pearl, etc. Three types of wallpaper are produced - silk, cellulose and silk-cellulose. Decorative plaster containing dyed silk fibers is highly resistant to ultraviolet light - it does not fade and does not change color during use, retaining its original appearance and color for many years. Cellulose and silk-cellulose wallpapers are cheaper than silk wallpapers, but they have a shorter service life.

A wide color palette allows you to create the necessary atmosphere in the premises - both business (in gray tones) and bright, sustained in modern design styles. Separately, it should be noted the effect of silk wallpaper - the coating formed by them looks like a fabric on the wall, and at the same time it is not a fabric. If desired, this decorative plaster allows for tinting and the introduction of decorative components into its composition, which makes it possible to obtain a wall covering of a unique color range and pattern. An interesting opportunity in decorating walls will be the creation of full-fledged panels using liquid wallpaper, tinted in different colors and applied to a drawing previously marked on the wall.

The walls, on which decorative plaster will be applied, do not need to be perfectly leveled, however, material consumption depends on how smooth their surface is. Before applying, the walls must be primed - this operation will increase the adhesion of liquid wallpaper and isolate their coating from contamination, the source of which can be the material from which the wall is created and the material of its rough finish.

Positive characteristics of liquid wallpaper:

  • do not require careful leveling of wall surfaces before application, since they themselves act as a leveling decorative plaster;
  • applied to vertical and horizontal surfaces, regardless of the wall material;
  • the finished coating has no joints, gaps, for example, between the wall and the skirting board, are easily filled with wallpaper material and leveled;
  • the structure of liquid wallpaper contains many tiny pores, i.e. the finished coating has high sound and heat insulating characteristics, is capable of absorbing excess moisture from the atmosphere of the premises and giving it away when the air is excessively dry;
  • antistatic material, does not attract dust;
  • the content of fungicides reliably prevents mold infestation;
  • it is convenient to work with this material - it is odorless, does not produce dust, when applied, an inexpensive tool is used, does not require a highly professional approach;
  • this wall material is as easy to remove as to apply - just moisten the surface with water, wait a few minutes and scrape off with a spatula. Accordingly, the liquid wallpaper cover is maintainable, i. E. in case of local damage, it is easy to restore it by replacing this area.

Now let's look at the disadvantages:

  • rather high cost - about 600 rubles. per kg;
  • due to the microporosity of the structure, the drying time of liquid wallpaper after application to the walls will take at least 24 hours;
  • due to their high hygroscopicity, they are not recommended for use in rooms with an atmosphere of high humidity, such as a kitchen, a bathroom and a bathroom, without surface protection with a layer of varnish.

Liquid wallpaper - application technology

The sequence of work on applying liquid wallpaper to walls and ceilings is as follows - surface preparation, priming and painting in the background color, mixing, laying it on the surface, drying the wallpaper.

Surface preparation. Walls and ceilings are thoroughly cleaned of old coatings and dirt, foci of fungal infection are treated with antiseptic preparations.

Priming and staining. Depending on the wall material, this operation is performed as follows:

  • concrete-lime walls before priming should be putty with mixtures on a gypsum binder, since they perfectly absorb water-soluble primers. Then a layer of deep impregnation primer is applied, on top - two layers of white VDAK;
  • areas made of wood materials (chipboard, MDF, plywood, etc.) should be primed with GF 021 gray alkyd primer, then painted with white VDAK in two layers;
  • gypsum plasterboard surfaces are completely filled with gypsum mixtures - it is necessary to putty exactly the entire plasterboard surface, and not just the joints between the sheets. The next two primers are white water-dispersion acrylic paint;
  • areas previously painted with oil paints or enamels are examined for swelling and peeling with a spatula. If such areas are found, it is necessary to thoroughly clean them, apply plaster putty, then VDAK in two layers.

Be careful with areas of walls and ceilings with rusty streaks - traces of previous water leaks! The high hygroscopicity of the components that make up liquid wallpaper will cause these stains to appear on their surface after application - carefully remove the areas with drips, regardless of the quality of the plaster in them. Then a two-layer application of the putty is carried out and priming with two or three layers of VDAK.

Any metal objects covered with liquid wallpaper must be spotted with a layer of oil paint.

Silk decorative plaster - mixing. Water at room temperature is poured into a plastic container of a suitable volume in the amount indicated on the package and taking into account the number of bags with dry wallpaper material used, the contents of the bags, decorative components (if used) are poured into it. The mixture is mixed by hand, i.e. without the use of mixers and spatulas - gently rub the material between your fingers to remove glue clots. For the stirring operation, the use of rubber gloves is not particularly necessary, since the components of dry wallpaper cannot do any harm to the skin on the hands. After completing stirring, leave the mixture for 12 hours to swell.

The main thing is to apply liquid wallpaper. After 12 hours, stir the mixture again, add 0.5-1 l of warm water to simplify the laying of the material on the surface. Liquid wallpaper should be applied with a plastic float, the layer thickness is about 2 mm (the wall surface should not be visible behind the applied layer), the movements during application are reciprocating (not circular!), The number of passes on the freshly laid surface should not exceed 10. Some types of decorative plaster can be installed with an air compressor and spray. Within 1.5-2 hours from the moment the liquid wallpaper is applied on the surface, it is allowed to adjust the layer - for this, the wallpaper layer in the necessary areas is ironed with a plastic float moistened with water.

Drying wallpaper. The period of complete drying of the wallpaper depends on the temperature (must be above 15 ° C) and humidity in the room, as well as the thickness of the applied layer. It is necessary to take about 48 hours to dry completely.

Panel from liquid wallpaper - technology

The creation of a panel is an opportunity for a unique design solution available to everyone who has a little artistic talent.

The selected drawing is applied to the putty and primed surface using a simple pencil (do not use markers!). When it is ready, we compose an aqueous mixture of liquid wallpaper in different plastic containers, we tint each one in the colors chosen for the panel.

After 12 hours, we start creating the panel. Using a plastic trowel, apply the material to the corresponding areas of the pattern so that the wallpaper extends beyond the contour boundaries by a millimeter or two. Then, using a rubber spatula, carefully move the superimposed material inside the contour, opening its borders and smoothing the protrusions with a trowel. Wallpaper is applied to areas not adjacent to each other, when they are filled, the work stops - you need to give the material time to pre-cure. The period of such drying is about 3 hours at a temperature of + 22 ° C, to shorten this period, you can use a regular hair dryer to dry your hair.

The filling of the sections of the panel located close to the previously hung ones is carried out according to the following scheme: by typing the material with a thin strip on a rubber spatula, we form the inner contour of the panel section with it, retreating 1-2 mm from the edge; then we fill the inner part with liquid wallpaper with a trowel. In the process of laying the material with a trowel, it will inevitably shift to the edges, and a predetermined indentation will prevent the wallpaper from going beyond the boundaries of the site.

To enhance the decorative effect, you can decorate sections of the panel with beads, various sparkles, sequins, bugles, etc. After the wallpaper is dry, if necessary, you can emphasize the contour lines using markers.

At the end

Like any finishing material, liquid wallpaper from different manufacturers has a different quality: large and well-known companies strive to improve the quality characteristics of products; small and little-known - to bring it to the "optimal level", which does not provide the proper quality. Yes, it is possible to use cheap products for wall decoration, but this will require the involvement of an experienced professional decorator who can improve the quality of the material to the required on-site, relying on his own experience. But even this measure will not allow to increase the service life of the coating - even the most experienced craftsmen cannot afford a solution to this issue; this requires serious laboratory tests and a number of tests that are carried out only by large manufacturers.

You should not try to save money by purchasing liquid wallpaper of unknown and dubious origin - it will cost yourself more.

Choosing liquid wallpaper in the bathroom

Over time, renovation in the apartment takes on new forms. Moreover, if previously high artistic abilities were required to create an individual design, now, it is enough to make a little effort, and any room will acquire an original and individual look. There are so many materials that sometimes the choice becomes really very difficult. Especially when it comes to wallpaper. How many types, and most importantly, how many colors, shades, textures and ornaments.

By the way, many people still tile the bathroom, photos of such rooms are full on the Web. At the same time, they are sure that there is no alternative. Painting the walls will not give the desired coziness, and wallpapering, for example, in the bathroom is not the best option because of the constant moisture. Even vinyl or non-woven ones in the bathroom will sooner or later become unusable.

New generation wallpaper

I would like the room to play in a new way, then a new word in repair is liquid wallpaper. Of course, with the word "liquid" we represent a certain substance that will be applied to the walls. But this is a completely dry mixture in small bags. They can be classified as decorative plaster.

The composition of the mixture
Liquid wallpaper is a mixture of cotton fibers, cellulose, a special binder, acrylic, and sometimes silk fibers. Also, various additives, glitters, additional fibers, etc. can be applied to this type of decorative plaster. Their variety can be seen in numerous photos on the Web.

The second component will be water. As a rule, it should not exceed 40 degrees in temperature. The amount of water is indicated on the package, but on average 6 liters per package.

We select liquid wallpaper
If the bathroom will be the room for finishing, the main criterion that liquid wallpaper should have is moisture resistance. Accordingly, you should carefully look at the packaging. It indicates the type, the ability to use in high humidity conditions.

The texture of the wallpaper can be smooth or embossed. It all depends on the amount of additives in the impurity.

The color is also the most diverse, so there should be no problems with the selection. In addition, the wallpaper can be perfectly combined. For example, the bottom of the bathroom can be laid out with darker tiles, and liquid wallpaper can be applied to the upper part of the room. You will get a wonderful contrast not only in colors and shades, but also in the texture of the material.

A little about the expense
If we compare liquid wallpaper with standard coatings, we can say that it will be cheaper in cost. One kilogram of decorative plaster is enough to process 4-5 square meters, depending on the manufacturer, composition and application layer.

The material is distributed easily, using a special spatula, it is slightly at an angle and always plastic, so as not to damage the coating. Even if the application is a little uneven, apply a damp enough spatula again. Only all additional work must be done immediately, because the coating dries out quickly enough.

Also, when choosing liquid wallpaper for the bathroom, you should pay attention to the composition. A mixture with larger fibers will be thicker and slightly more difficult to apply, while finer plaster may even be sprayed on.

Repair in the apartment, no matter how long it lasts, is still entering its final stage. And so, we are faced with the question of choosing a wallpaper. What kind of wallpaper should you choose? The assortment is quite wide. There are expensive wallpapers, and there are cheaper ones. There are wallpapers on a non-woven basis, and there are paper ones. Due to its high elasticity, such a coating will fill small gaps, uneven walls, and, which is important, in case of shrinkage of walls in new houses, it will not crack.

Where can liquid wallpaper be used? Almost everywhere. In offices, living rooms, corridors, kitchens and even bathrooms. However, in the case of using them in the bathroom or in the kitchen, it is advisable to apply a layer of colorless varnish over the wallpaper - this will extend their service life.
