Fire hydrant in the well - installation rules

Fire hydrants are an important element in protecting buildings and all property from fire. If there is a fire, then only quick extinguishing will minimize losses, and possibly save lives. Therefore, it is imperative to ensure that the hydrant operates smoothly and is quickly accessible.

Therefore, to fight the fire, it is envisaged to build a special fire-fighting water supply system. Water intake from it is carried out using fire wells with hydrants. The distance between these wells is determined by SNiP 2.04.02-84.

General information

What is a hydrant

Structurally, this device is a conventional plumbing clamp or shutter, which in the side outlet has a shut-off device capable of being subjected to the pressure of the plumbing system for a long time. In addition, a feature of the device is that it may not be used for many years, and at the same time retain its functionality.

The upper part of the side outlet has a thread that is designed for screwing on the water intake. Typically, the threaded portion is covered with a lid. A fire or other water intake system is connected to the device immediately before operation.

Today, fire structures are used that comply with GOST 8220 85. They are suitable for connection to any type of centralized water supply system.

The hydrant is installed in the well on a special stand, which is a steel or cast iron tee equipped with an assembly platform. The device itself is fixed to a waterproof gasket using a bolted connection.

Principle of operation

When the hydrant bar is turned, it presses the valve and moves it down, which opens the way for water. The stem must rotate 360 degrees 15 times for the valve to open fully.

The device is brought into working condition by means of a KPA-type fire column key, which is a screw mechanism equipped with outlets for connecting hoses. I must say that this equipment can work not only as an independent fire fighting device, but also as a power source for fire engines.

Note! Structures that are intended for must have a check valve in the drain hole, which ensures tightness from the ingress of groundwater.

Fundamental rules

Before considering the installation of the device, you need to familiarize yourself with the rules governing this process:

  • The installation of fire hydrants in the well should be carried out at a distance of 50-100 m to any wall of the building.
  • The diameter of the water supply must be 100 mm or more. For rural areas, a diameter of at least 75 mm is allowed.
  • Consideration should be given to laying fire hoses on a hard surface.
  • The distance between the wells should be determined in accordance with the total water consumption for extinguishing the fire, the throughput of the device and the number of storeys of the building.
  • The device should be located no more than 2.5 meters from the edge of the road, but at the same time, no closer than 5 meters from the wall of the building.
  • The device is installed vertically, while its centerline should be no closer than 175 mm from the wall of the hatch neck.
  • The distance from the hatch to the riser should be no more than 40 cm and no less than 15 cm.
  • When installing a hydrant, it is important to choose the right height, which depends on the depth of the pipeline.

The height can be different - from 1125 mm to 3500 mm, depending on this, the price of the equipment can also change.

Brief installation instructions are as follows:

    • First of all, a stand is mounted, which should be located strictly vertically. In this case, you should ensure its reliable fixation. The stand can be either welded or bolted.
    • Then, on the built-in stand, using a flange connection, a vertical hydrant stand is installed, which is equipped with a welded flange or a welded flange by-catch. Tightness is ensured by a special gasket made of synthetic or modified rubber.
    • For snow skidding, a special pyramid-shaped structure should be installed on top, sheathed with foam from the inside.

    This completes the installation work.

    Conclusion

A hydrant is an extremely important element for providing buildings with fire safety. However, in order for the device to function as expected and always be ready for emergency situations, it is necessary to strictly adhere to the rules of the installation that are given above.
