Thanksgiving prayers for Holy Communion. Prayers before communion and confession

In everyone's life an orthodox person there are events that go far beyond the daily joys and sorrows. These are the days when the sacrament of Holy Communion is performed over him. They lie on a completely different plane of life. They bring joy, but this joy is of a special kind, not commensurate with the joy that gives us earthly life... These are the days of our union with God.

What is the meaning of Holy Communion for us?

The great sacrament of the sacrament of the body and blood of the Lord makes our human nature akin to God. His body and blood become part of us, organically part of our soul and body. As a person inherits from his biological parents, a part of which he became due to blood kinship, certain inherent qualities, so having absorbed the body and blood of the Lord, we become heirs of his qualities.

The Lord in his earthly life, offering an atoning sacrifice, died and then rose again in a completely different flesh. This flesh was endowed with properties inaccessible to an ordinary person... But Holy Communion makes us - the creations of his hands - the heirs of both this flesh and this immortality. In addition, Jesus Christ, incarnate from the Virgin Mary, took on all human qualities, except for sinfulness. The Lord is sinless.

Reading the prayers included in the Follow-up to Holy Communion, we ask God to deliver us from the slavery of sin that has gravitated over us since the day of the fall of the first people - Adam and Eve. And our prayers are justified. After all, becoming partakers of the Divine body and blood, we must get rid of sinful captivity. For the great joy of spiritual renewal and the attainment of immortality, we thank the Lord God, offering him prayers of thanks after Holy Communion.

Where and how are these prayers read?

The communion of the Holy Mysteries of the Body and Blood of Christ is performed in the church during the Liturgy. At the end, a prayer of thanksgiving after Communion is read on behalf of all who were honored on this day of the holy sacrament. Usually the psalmist reads it. But sometimes parishioners, after returning home from church, open a prayer book and read themselves.

The text that makes up the thanksgiving prayers for Holy Communion includes five independent prayers. This is followed by the famous words of the holy Reverend Simeon the God-receiver: "Now let go ..." - and then the texts of the troparia and kontakion are read, depending on which saint's liturgy was performed on that day. All this prayer serves the same purpose - to adequately praise and thank the Lord God for giving us great mercy. It is not for nothing that prayers of thanks for Holy Communion are preceded by words that urge to read them ardently and heartily.

First prayer

This prayer begins with words of gratitude to God for the fact that, in spite of all our sinfulness, he did not reject us and revealed his sacred secrets as partakers. This is followed by a request that his body and blood serve mental healing and bodily health. So that they help to repel any enemy, visible and invisible, to enlighten with the knowledge of Divine Mysteries to strengthen faith and give strength to keep the holy commandments of the Lord. This first thanksgiving prayer after Communion ends with words expressing a desire to continue to devote his life to serving God, and a request for blessed help on this way. This is followed by a prayer written in the 4th century by St. Basil the Great.

Prayer of Saint Basil the Great

First of all, it is necessary to say a few words about this saint. Basil the Great was born in Caesarea in 303. Having received an excellent education in childhood, he continued it in Athens. Here he met another pillar of Christianity - Gregory the Theologian. Their friendship lasted all their lives. In Athens, Saint Basil embarked on the path of asceticism and the knowledge of Christian doctrine. Soon he was ordained. The saint traveled a lot. Having gathered a circle of like-minded people, he became their spiritual mentor.

He wrote many theological works that have come down to us. The prayer of thanksgiving after Communion, written by St. Basil the Great, is full of deep and sincere feeling. He begins it with words of gratitude for all the blessings given to him by God. The saint asks the Lord to always keep him with grace and divine power. In conclusion, he prays that the Lord would grant him to keep his conscience unblemished and always begin the holy ordinances with the consciousness of his spiritual purity.

Prayer three

Its author is Saint Simeon Metaphrast, who lived in Greece at the turn of the 9th-10th centuries. He went down in the history of Christianity as an outstanding theologian and historian. He created an extensive collection of the lives of the saints, edited and provided with commentaries. The prayer of thanksgiving written by him after Communion is read third in a row. Starting it, he likens the Lord God to a fire that burns up all the unworthy. The monk prays, preserving his life, to burn away the sinful thorns that nest in him, and to make him the abode of the Holy Spirit. The monk entrusts himself to God's providence and trusts in its protection.

Very short, fourth prayer

This small prayer is filled with very deep meaning... It contains an appeal to God with a request for a gift eternal life- the main and longed-for goal of every Christian. Then the words of the prayer cry out to the Lord for the bestowal of mercy on The last judgment that will follow the second coming.

The Most Holy Theotokos enjoys special love and veneration among all Christians. There is a very special attitude towards her. She surpasses the angelic hosts with her purity and holiness. Even cherubs and seraphim cannot compare with her. Therefore, the prayer addressed to her begins with words full of sincere love. “The light of the darkened soul, cover, refuge, consolation and joy” - these are the epithets with which the thanksgiving brought to her begins for the fact that she vouchsafed us to partake of the blood and body of her Son.

In prayer, we, confessing that we have been mortified by sin, ask the Most Pure One to revive us. For her, who gave birth to the source of immortality, nothing is impossible. We ask you to direct our thoughts to good deeds and fill our hearts with Divine love. And like all previous prayers, the prayer of thanksgiving to the Mother of God ends with a request for the granting of us the opportunity to receive the shrine of the purest mysteries until the end of our lives.

Gospel passage and subsequent troparia

At the end of the prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos, a short biblical text is read, which includes the words of the holy Reverend Simeon the God-Receiver, uttered by him when he received his sight in the incarnate God brought to the temple by the Holy Spirit. His "Now let go ..." concludes the thanksgiving prayers after communion, the description of which is given above.

But our thanksgiving doesn't end there. Further, the troparia and kontakion are read, and, which ones, depends on which saint's liturgy was performed. It could have been the liturgy of St. Basil the Great, or it could have been John Chrysostom. In addition, if the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was served, then the troparion to Saint Gregory the Dvoeslov and the corresponding kontakion are read. A prayer of thanks to the guardian angel is not included in this list of prayers, but it is quite understandable that we cannot but thank the guardian of our soul and body, do not give him credit for everything we owe him, including the grace of Holy Communion. There are many prayers to our guardian angel. You can read any of them. The main thing is that it comes from a pure heart. Preparing for Holy Communion, everyone reads a large number of prayers prescribed by the church charter. Among them there is a canon for the guardian angel. It is very good to reread it after the sacrament has been performed.

Glory to You, God. Glory to You, God. Glory to You, God.

Thanksgiving prayer, 1st

Thank you, O Lord, my God, for you did not reject me as a sinner, but you have vouchsafed me to be your companion. I thank Thee, as Thou hast vouchsafed me unworthy to partake of Thy Most Pure and Heavenly Gifts. But Master of Humanity, for our sake, the dead and resurrected, and the dreadful and life-giving Sacraments that have been given to us for the benefit and sanctification of our souls and bodies, may this be also me, for the healing of soul and body, for driving away everyone who resists, for the enlightenment of the eyes of my heart. , in the peace of my spiritual strength, in faith that is not ashamed, in love that is not hypocritical, in the fulfillment of wisdom, in the observance of Thy commandments, in the application of Thy Divine grace and Thy Kingdom appropriation; Yes, in Thy sanctity we shall be preserved by those, I remember Thy grace always, and I do not live for myself, but for You, our Lord and Benefactor; and so this life has gone about the hope of the eternal belly, into the everlasting one I will achieve peace, where the celebrating voice is unceasing, and endless sweetness, who see your face with ineffable kindness. Thou art a true desire, and the ineffable joy of those who love Thee, Christ our God, and Thou sings all creation forever. Amen.

Prayer 2, St. Basil the Great

Lord Christ God, King of the ages, and the Coordinator of all, I thank Thee for all who have given me good ones, and for the communion of Thy most pure and life-giving Sacraments. I pray to Thee, Better and Human-loving: keep me under Thy roof, and in Thy canopy; and grant me a clear conscience, even to my last breath, worthy to partake of Thy holy things, for the remission of sins, and for eternal life. Thou art the animal bread, the source of holiness, the Giver of the good, and we glorify Thee, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer 3, Simeon Metaphrastus

Thy flesh giving food to me by Thy will, this fire and scorching unworthy ones, so do not scorch me, my Builder; but rather pass into my uds, into all formations, into the womb, into the heart. The thorns of all my sins have fallen. Cleanse your soul, sanctify your thoughts. Compositions solidify with bones together. Enlighten the senses of a simple five. Bring me all the way to Thy fear. Always cover, observe, and save me from every deed and word of the soulful. Cleanse and washed and adorn me; fertilize, educate, and enlighten me. Show me Thy village of the one Spirit, and not to one the village of sin. Yes, like your home, the entrance of communion, like fire, every villain runs to me, every passion. Prayer books I bring to You all the holy, the ruling authority of the incorporeal, Thy Forerunner, wise Apostles, to this Thy unclean, pure Mother, receive their prayers in the Divine grace, my Christ, and make Thy servant a son of light. Thou art the sanctification and one of ours, Better, souls and lordship; and it is like you, like God and the Sovereign, we give all glory every day.

Prayer 4th

Thy Holy Body, Lord, Jesus Christ, our God, may there be me in an eternal belly, and Thy honest blood for the remission of sins: wake me this thanksgiving for joy, health and gladness; on the terrible and second coming of Yours, vouch for me a sinful article at the right hand of Your glory, with the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, and of all the saints.

Prayer 5, to the Most Holy Theotokos

The Most Holy Lady of the Theotokos, the light of my darkened soul, hope, cover, refuge, consolation, my joy, thank You, as if you have made me unworthy, a partaker of the existence of the Most Pure Body and Honest Blood of Your Son. But who gave birth to the true Light, enlighten my clever eyes of the heart; Even who gave birth to the Source of immortality, revive me who was killed by sin; Even more gracious God, amiable mother, have mercy on me, and give me tenderness and contrition in my heart, and humility in my thoughts, and a proclamation in captivity of my thoughts; and vouch for me to my last breath, uncondemnedly accept the holy Mysteries consecration, for the healing of the soul and body. And give me tears of repentance and confession, in a hedgehog and praise Thee in all the days of my life, as blessed and forwarded thou art forever. Amen. Now let go of Thy servant, Master, according to Thy verb, in peace: as if my eyes see Thy salvation, I have prepared before the face of all people, light for the revelation of tongues and the glory of Thy people, Israel.

Trisagion. Holy Trinity ... Our Father ...

Troparion of St. John Chrysostom, voice 8

Your lips, like the lightness of fire, brightening grace, enlighten the universe: not the love of the world's treasures, the height of showing us humility, but punishing your words, Father John Chrysostom, pray to the Word of Christ God to save our souls.

Kontakion, voice 6th

Glory: You have received Divine grace from heaven, and with your lips teach all to worship in the Trinity to the only God, John Chrysostom, all blessed, reverend, we praise you worthily: you are a mentor, as if you were divine.

And now: The betrayal of Christians is not shameful, the intercession to the Creator is immutable, do not despise the sinful prayers of the voices, but anticipate, like the Good One, to help us, who are rightly calling Ty: speed up to prayer, and sweep for supplication, presenting always to the Mother of God, who honor Thee.
If the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was celebrated, read the troparion to Saint Gregory the Dvoeslov Basil the Great, voice 4:
Even from God above, we receive divine grace, gloriously Gregory, and we strengthen Him with power, you have deigned to march in the gospel, from Christ the reward of labors you have received all-blessed: Behold Him, may our souls be saved.

Kontakion, voice 3rd

Glory: Thou didst appear to be the Head of the Shepherd of Christ, monks of the monks, Father Gregory, instructing the heavenly fence, and from there you taught the flock of Christ by His commandment: now you rejoice with them, and rejoice in heavenly blood.

Lord have mercy.

If the liturgy of Saint Basil the Great was celebrated, read the troparion to Basil the Great, voice 1st:

Throughout the whole earth, your broadcasting, as if it received your word, you taught divinely, you understood the nature of beings, you have adorned human customs, royal priesthood, reverend Father, pray to Christ God, save our souls.

Kontakion, voice 4th

Glory: Thou an unshakable foundation appeared to the church, giving all the indestructible domination of man, having sealed with your decrees, the unbelievable Reverend Basil.

And now: The betrayal of Christians ...

If the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts was celebrated, read the troparion to Saint Gregory the Dvoeslov, voice 4th:

Even from God above, we receive divine grace, gloriously Gregory, and we strengthen Him with power, you have deigned to march in the gospel, from Christ the reward of labors you have received all-blessed: Behold Him, may our souls be saved.

Kontakion, voice 3rd

Glory: The Sub-Leader seemed to be the Leader of Christ's shepherd, monks in succession, Father Gregory, instructing the heavenly fence, and from there you taught the flock of Christ by His commandment: now you rejoice with them, and rejoice in heavenly blood.

And now: Intercession by Christians ...

Lord have mercy. (12 times) Glory, and now.

The most honest cherub and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, without corruption of God the Word, who gave birth to the existing Mother of God Thee we magnify.
