How to bend a drywall guide. Difficult moments - installation of a profile for drywall with your own hands. How to bend drywall with your own hands: "dry" methods

Greenhouse frame with square or rectangular section attracts with reliability and service life. A very durable metal structure allows maximum light to pass through, because its racks, supports, ties are much thinner than those of wooden rivals. Inferior metal in manufacturability. Without knowledge of the nuances, it is difficult to make an arched arc or a frame for a door from a straight blank. Because of these complications, metal base absolutely in vain prefer to buy "green houses". However, if you carefully understand how to bend profile pipe for a greenhouse, you can build an inexpensive arched structure with your own hands at little cost.

The essence and problems of profile pipe bending

Bending of metal products, regardless of the shape of the section, consists in giving them a partial or complete smoothly curved configuration. One of the common locksmith procedures is performed either under pressure alone or under pressure in combination with heating of the bending section. At this time, compressive forces with inside workpiece and tensile forces along the outer wall. Complications are that:

  • the material in the process of changing the shape may lose the coaxiality of the segments, i.e. parts of the curved workpiece will not be located in a single plane;
  • stretchable outer wall in the bending area it may not withstand the impact and simply burst;
  • the compressible inner wall may, instead of a uniform contraction, fold into folds resembling a corrugation.

Without knowledge of the intricacies of profile bending, there is a risk of simply crushing the product, ruining the workpiece. But recklessness is not our way! Especially if it is accompanied by material losses. For the glory of rational economy, we will take into account all the whims of the profile and the characteristics of the "iron" material. Let's not forget about the dimensions of the section, the wall thickness of the profile pipe, the required bending radius and the elasticity of the steel alloy. Focusing on the specified parameters, we will choose the right technological path - it is also a bending method.

Why do you need to know the characteristics of the profile?

Profile pipe rolling differs from the standard round version in the shape of the section, which can be square, oval, rectangular or flat-oval. According to the GOST R regulation No. 54157-2010, a round product is also included in the list of profile products. However, in greenhouse construction, products with a square and rectangular section are most often used, for example, profile pipes 40x20 mm, because it is easier to attach a coating to their even flat walls.

For a variety of national economic needs, products are produced in a wide range of sizes. It differs in configuration and cross-sectional area and, of course, in wall thickness. The set of dimensions determines the plastic possibilities. In professional language, they are called the minimum permissible radius of curvature. So, before you learn how to make a blank for the frame, you need to find out what is the smallest radius of flat rounded deformation that the blank can “survive” without damage.

To determine the minimum allowable bend radius of a square or rectangular profile, we need the height h, because:

  • products with a profile height of up to 20 mm will bend without going into the category of unusable marriage if bending is carried out in a section with a length of 2.5 × h or more;
  • pipe with a profile height of more than 20 mm without loss will withstand deformation in a section with a length of 3.5 × h or more.

The indicated limits are necessary for those who plan to make shelving, shelves and frames for windows or doors. The wall thickness also introduces its own adjustments to the limitation area. Wide pipes with thin walls up to 2 mm thick are generally not recommended for bending. It is better to use welding.

Home craftsmen who decide to make arcs for, need to take into account that household products made of ordinary carbon or low-alloy steel alloys, after applying efforts to them, tend to “spring” slightly. They seem to be trying to get back to former state. Therefore, after the novice locksmith completes the bending of all the arcs with his own hands, he will have to repeat the processing and re-fit the arches according to the template. It is desirable to initially take into account the value of the plastic modulus Wp. It is usually indicated in the documents of the building material being sold. How this moment less, the less fuss there will be with the fit.

Bending methods and their features

They bend profile pipes both in cold and hot condition. Heat gas burner significantly increase plasticity. However, a material with a small cross-section bends excellently without unnecessary thermal effects, because thin pipes are quite plastic and more easily yield to the force applied to them.

There are no precise guidelines for applying heat to bending. The standards indicate only the dimensions of round bars, according to which it is necessary to act on the treated area with a flame at Ø 100 mm or more. With square and rectangular shapes, everything happens a little differently. Based on the experience of folk craftsmen:

  • with a profile height of up to 10 mm, the workpieces are unequivocally cold-bent;
  • with a profile height of 40 mm or more, the pipes are bent with heating.

How simpler and easier it is to bend a profile with a height in the range from 10 to 40 mm at home, the performer will have to decide on his own. If the master has a profile bender in his arsenal, it can be used to create an arched rounding without heating. There is no apparatus, it is better to test your strength in advance. To do this, clamp one end of the material in a vise. On the second end, put on a pipe larger than the height of the profile, and pull the “shoulder” enlarged in this way. If it worked out, it makes no sense to heat metal products.

Option #1 - bending with heat

We will deform the non-yielding material using the hot method, after filling it with sand. So the quality of processing will increase, and the uniformity of the bend will be ensured. Stock up on work "hot" with canvas mittens and proceed:

  • from scraps of timber or logs we will make two pyramidal plugs, the length of which should be 10 times the width of the base. The base area of \u200b\u200beach homemade cork should be almost 2 times the square or rectangular hole, which she has to plug;
  • let's try on how the plugs "sit down", then on one of them we will select longitudinal grooves on four sides. They are needed to release the gas that will accumulate when the filler is heated;
  • pre-anneal the workpiece at the site of the future bend;
  • prepare the filler. Let's take pure building sand medium grit. In the absence of bulk building materials, we will use sand from a children's sandbox. We first sift it through a sieve with cells of 2 or 2.5 mm to remove gravel and gossips from the stuffing. Large inclusions on the surface of the pipes can form an unnecessary relief. Then we “pass” the sifted mass again, but through a fine sieve with cells of 0.7 mm, so that the dusty particles do not sinter when heated. All screenings, as well as the filler at the end of the action, will be returned to the sandbox;
  • calcinate the filler at a temperature of 150ºС;
  • we will hammer one end with a wooden plug, on which there are no channels for venting gases. Install a funnel at the other end. Depending on the size, we will install the workpiece at an angle or perpendicular to the ground. Through the funnel, we will pour the filler in portions. Periodically tap on the walls of the product from the bottom up with a wooden or rubber mallet so that the sand is compacted. A dull sound will be a signal of sufficient compaction;
  • close the filled blank with a second cork;
  • mark the heating area with chalk on the workpiece;
  • we fix the workpiece either in a vise with a template, or in a clamp. material with welded seam set so that the place welded joint appeared on the side. It is undesirable to stretch or compress along the seam;
  • we will heat the marked area red-hot, and carefully give the workpiece the necessary shape. We bend in one step with a translational unsharp movement in a strictly horizontal or vertical plane;
  • after cooling, compare the result with the template. If everything is in order, we knock out or burn out the plugs and pour out the sand.

The described method is good for the formation of single corner bends, because it is strongly not recommended to heat the pipes several times. Metal from repeated temperature shock loses its strength. However, when creating a rounded arch, repeated heating is inevitable. After all, it is unrealistic to do the work in one go, and chilled to a light cherry shade, i.e. up to 800ºС, the workpiece can simply break.

Option #2 - cold method

Plastic deformation of profiled rolled products "cold" is carried out both with and without filler. Material with a profile height of up to 10 mm does not require filling. A thicker pipe is best filled with sand or rosin. An alternative to sand filler is a dense coil spring, the dimensions of which will allow it to be tightly installed in the cavity at the processing site. The spring gasket will prevent a sharp change in the section of the profile at the bend.

You can bend "cold" at home:

  • manually using the simplest devices such as bending plates, vices and mandrels;
  • using a mobile profile bender - an improved analogue of a manual pipe bender. A profile bender is different from a bending device round pipes only the shape of the recess of the working roller;
  • by rolling on a homemade or factory roll forming machine, which you can make yourself or purchase ready-made.

It is more reasonable and more profitable to rent technical means of mechanization of bending if they are needed for a one-time construction of a greenhouse. If in the future the construction of green houses for relatives and neighbors or the construction of a beautiful metal fence, for example, there is a reason to get your own bending machine.

Bending fixtures and machines

In the family of devices and units for bending, there are representatives of varying degrees of technical complexity. To begin with, we will consider the means for those who are puzzled by the question of how and with what help it is possible to bend a profile pipe without the use of special equipment. Then we move on to homemade rolling installations.

Variants of the simplest devices

The use of elementary "helpers" for cold deformation regulate the dimensions of the material:

  • thin tubes with a profile height of up to 10 mm are bent using a horizontal plate with holes. Metal pins, which play the role of stops, are rigidly installed in the holes. The product is bent, placing it between the stops installed in the holes according to the bending radius. Start from the middle of the workpiece and gradually move towards the edges. The disadvantages of the method are in the application of considerable muscular effort and in a rather low accuracy of deformation;
  • pipes with a profile height of up to 25 mm are bent using roller devices operating on the principle of a Volnov machine. The metal workpiece is firmly fixed in a vice, and physical force is applied to the workpiece through the roller. Bending is performed better and more evenly than in the previous case. But from the performer, by analogy, remarkable efforts will be required.

To form a bend with a large radius of curvature, such as arcs for an arched frame, fixed round templates with clamps are used to fix the workpiece. These devices belong to the category of plane-parallel plates. The workpiece is “placed” with force in a groove, the dimensions of which are equal to the dimensions of the pipe. Manually bent with a mandrel, the pipe takes the shape of a given contour.

Upgraded bending plate

If the home locksmith is not deprived of physical strength, he will need the simplest tool for rather laborious deformation of a profile pipe. It can be made in the form of a panel attached with clamps to the desktop or to the workbench. In the case shown in the photo, the bending plate is welded to a metal pedestal, but it is bolted to it with four bolts. concrete floor workshop. To remove the device at the end of the work, it will be enough to unscrew the bolts. After dismantling, no fastening pins remain and do not rise above the floor surface, which means that nothing will interfere with movement and create traumatic threats.

The principle of manufacturing a working plane is extremely simple:

  • The bending plate is a panel cut from thick sheet iron.
  • The panel is welded to a profile pipe, which is installed according to telescopic rules in the pedestal post.
  • In the working plane, two holes are drilled for bolts, which are stops.
  • The bending radius is adjusted by installing nozzles of a suitable size on one of the bolts.
  • In order to maintain the alignment of the segments adjacent to the bend, a metal plate is installed above the workpiece, fixed with bolts.

The pedestal is multifunctional. Its owner has the opportunity to use it as a miniature workbench to perform an impressive number of plumbing operations.

Mandrel for profile pipe bending

The method is suitable for products with a wall height of up to 25mm. The master will need a large workbench and a significant amount of free space around working area. One edge of the workbench is perforated with frequently spaced holes for fixing the mandrel and for choosing the optimal position of the part that fixes the pipe. The template for the upcoming plastic deformation is cut out of thick plywood. True, a plywood mandrel is suitable only for one-time bending procedures. If there is a lot of bending work to be done, it is better to weld the mandrels from a steel corner.

Using a manual profile bender

Significant amounts of deformation work require mechanization. Mass production of curved parts will take too much health from the performer. To facilitate bending, it is advisable to make a machine according to a drawing. They are mainly used for work with large-sized workpieces. The main working bodies of the manual unit are three rolls, two of which are fixed. Changing the position of the third movable roll determines the angle of bending.

If the methods described above are not acceptable, then the future owner of the greenhouse has two options - renting a manual installation or ordering the manufacture of rounded parts. The process of deformation of the workpiece was demonstrated by the video: it is up to the performer to decide how easier it is to bend the profile pipe - by repeated rolling or physical impact.

When working manually, it is important to follow the rules for bending profile pipes and not to make sudden movements. It is necessary to monitor the uniformity of deformation from the outer and inner sides of the rolled product. However, you should not be too upset because of small wrinkles on inner surface fold: they can be corrected with hammer blows. Before starting work, it is necessary to make templates from wire, chipboard or drywall for verification and obtaining a result corresponding to the project.

Do-it-yourself plasterboard structures are almost always attached to metal carcass. When installing profiles, you need to focus on the markup that is carried out at the very beginning of the repair.

To properly markup, arm yourself with some tools.

For marking you need:

  • Marking cord (you can find it at any building materials store);
  • Marker (for drawing on any surface);
  • Square;
  • Special construction roulette;
  • Laser level.

First of all, a line is drawn along which the new drywall construction. If at the same time smoothing work is underway uneven walls, find the protruding point of the wall, set a mark along the perpendicular from it.

The distance between the wall and the mark will be equal to the width of the profile, plus another three mm. After that, you select one of the corners, another mark is already deposited in it at a similar distance from the wall. Then you take a tape measure and a chalk line, and lay a line on the floor. At the same time, the reference point is on these two marks.

On the ceiling, the lines are marked in the same way. Lines are applied directly to the wall, against which they will rack profiles. The distance between these profiles is 60 cm.

This work requires precision, since the subsequent installation of profiles depends on it.

Connecting a profile to each other

Connection types:

  • Guide connections at the inner corner. With sharp scissors at one of the profiles, cut off the shelf to a length, it will be equal to the width of the profile with a margin of 20 mm, for the convenience of entering the drywall sheet. The second profile, which forms an angle, you lay and fasten on top of the first.
  • Ear profile fastening. Sometimes a profile segment needs to be attached to the base. To do this with your own hands, he needs to remove the shelves. Cut profile desired length with a margin of 50 mm, which will fall "in the ear". After that, shelves are cut on the border line of the allowance to the back. Bend the allowance, shelves, cut them off at a small angle, with access to pre-made cuts.
  • Slit connections. Along the profile fold line, make cuts to a depth of 40 mm. If you need to get a smooth edge, cut not along the line, but along the shelf. Bend, and then cut off the back of the profile. Then you connect the profiles.

The angle that is obtained during the connection is fixed with self-tapping bugs.

How to bend a profile

Mounting a profile for drywall sometimes suggests that it needs to be bent.

Profile bending methods:

  • First way. You cut two side parts of the profile, but its base remains intact. The smaller the radius of the future structure, the more often you need to make cuts.
  • Second way. In this case, the base and one side shelf of the profile are incised. This profile is suitable for the production of elements in the form of a wave, oval elements.

It is often necessary to bend the profile in the manufacture of arches. When doing this with your own hands, be careful not to rush so that the profile bends symmetrically.

Curved profile

Bending the profile is a must if you are making a figured ceiling with your own hands. The more complex the idea, the more difficult the installation of the profile for drywall.

The easiest way to bend a metal profile is by notching. Do not forget that you need to make cuts at equal distances, this work is done with great care so as not to break the profile.

Metal shears - best tool in order to bend the profile correctly.

Profile construction

Whatever design you do, the work is based on a certain algorithm.

Action plan for the construction of the structure:

  • Preparation of profiles and sheets of drywall;
  • markup;
  • Profile cutting;
  • Compound;
  • Checking the level of all points of the frame.

If communication is carried out in the design, then it is better to mount a corrugated sleeve here, where the wires and pipes will hide.

Mounting without profiles

Usually this means adhesive method. If for some reason it is not possible to assemble the frame, or if you think that this is extra work, you can fix drywall with glue.

This is done by hand, the work is simple, but this method is good only when smooth walls. With visible irregularities, the sheets will be glued to a bumpy surface, and the aesthetics of such a picture is doubtful. Of course, gluing sheets is easier than building a frame.

This installation is carried out in several stages:

  • Studying the configuration of the walls;
  • Wall preparation;
  • Marking places for glue;
  • Transferring markings to drywall sheets;
  • Drilling mechanical fixation;
  • Installation of drywall on glue;
  • Adjustment of sheet levels;
  • Mechanical fixation.

Putting sheets on glue or still making a frame - in each case it is decided individually, it all depends on the evenness / unevenness of the walls. Do-it-yourself adhesive bonding can be no less strong.

Profile frames are constructed with the expectation that they can withstand a large load under mirrors, chandeliers, lamps. Therefore, the connections must be strong so that the frame is ready for any load.

Features of installing a profile for drywall with your own hands (video)

Popular construction material drywall is used to create an ideal flat surfaces. But now from quality drywall began to carry out design structures of a curved shape - arches, multi-level ceilings, niches. Similar components of the decor can be created independently, but first we will find out how to bend the drywall profile so that the desired shape comes out. In addition, you need to learn how to make a strong metal frame to secure the curved part.

For what purposes is it necessary to bend a drywall profile?

Drywall (gypsum plasterboard) is used to create various curly elements. Modern installation of suspended ceilings is not complete without the use of this material. While creating ceiling design the following elements are used:

  • Circles of various diameters
  • Regular squares or rectangles
  • Waves, steps, sun and many other elements

In addition, bending the profile will be required in the following cases:

  • If a high arch is formed, the profile can be bent into an arc
  • When the ceiling is formed as a single composition with the transition of individual curly components to the walls
  • When installing a niche with a curved element
  • When creating an arched partition having a complex bend

Any of these cases suggests that it is necessary to bend drywall profile so that the structure is installed based on the given scheme. If you follow all the steps correctly, the profile will be easy to install.

It is necessary to bend the metal parts of the frame intended for drywall strictly according to the scheme. Therefore, in order to bend correctly large area profile, study the attached instructions.

Required tools and materials

Working with durable sheets requires required set accessories. To properly bend metal parts, make the necessary incision on one of them, and also make them quality installation We use the following accessories:

  • screwdriver
  • metal screwdriver
  • Pencil, tape measure and accurate building level
  • Special scissors for working with metal

In addition, the following items may be needed:

  • Durable metal profiles on which we will fix the GKL
  • Various fasteners, such as self-tapping screws

When bending sheets, you need to take care of your own safety, hands should be covered with protective gloves to avoid various scratches and abrasions. Special protective goggles may also come in handy at work. The procedure for creating structures from profiles of the required shape will take you 20 minutes, if you follow the recommendations.

Let's start bending and fixing the profile

How to bend a profile for drywall? You can bend the guide profile, since the rack-mounted ones are designed to support the main weight of the future structure. When creating an opening for the arch, you need to use a special arched profile.

You need to bend all profiles before starting their direct installation. Notches at right angles will help to give the profile the desired shape. There are 2 execution methods, depending on which part metal profile will be used to install a solid frame:

Data-lazy-type="image" data-src="https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/20140802160235..jpg 320w, https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/ uploads/2017/08/20140802160235-300x246.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px">

Jpg" alt="(!LANG: how to bend drywall profile" width="320" height="240" srcset="" data-srcset="https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/20140802161546..jpg 300w, https://remontcap.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/20140802161546-174x131..jpg 70w" sizes="(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px">!}

The smaller the radius of the upcoming bend, the more often you need to make cuts. Often the ceiling is decorated with figures, sometimes the wall can also be decorated with various figures. In this case, the bend must be done at the end of the formation of the frame of the first level. The profile bending scheme is as follows:

  1. We make the markup for the first wireframe level. This is mandatory, since without this action it is impossible to perform complex curly elements;
  2. We cut the desired profile to the required length. To perform shortening, you need to use special scissors for metal;
  3. We make cuts at a right angle, one must go parallel to the other, otherwise it will not be possible to bend the element. The step for their implementation may vary, but it is in the range of 50-80 mm;
  4. We make incisions along the entire length or strictly in the place where you need to make the next bend;
  5. We try on the incised material to the finished marking lines;
  6. Install ready fastener, bending it as it is fixed;
  7. We fix all the components, giving them a given shape.

Before the start of the bend, the structure is fixed with self-tapping screws. This is an easy way to secure the future frame to get the right decor element.

You may need help to install a structure of many curved shapes, as it can be difficult to install a bulky part yourself. You need to carefully look during work, so that everything is done according to the scheme, the desired shape of the bend is obtained.

During the fixation of a frame containing curvilinear forms, each detail must be checked with a building level, because it is very important that all components are placed in a single plane.

Of course, with the help of drywall, you can even out the surface of the ceilings, and create all kinds of shapes and ornaments.

Real works of drywall on the ceiling can decorate any apartment or room. If only your imagination worked.

The topic of our material is how to properly bend drywall and mount figured ceilings from drywall. Let's study how to make some curly elements and structures with our own with my own hands.

How to bend drywall?

Possibility of manufacturing various forms and figures using drywall, of course, is available. Drywall is a dense material that holds its shape well, but can also break. Then how to be? Calm down, your fears are premature.

Using special methods, drywall elements are easy to give any desired shape. Of course, you will need to apply the knowledge that we are going to give you. If you have never mounted suspended ceilings, then we can also recommend reading the article on our website. But let's not spread it and go directly to the description of the process:

  • First of all, of course - the drawing

Starts with a drawing. The drawing can be made for you by a designer or an architect. Before you bend drywall for an arch or other curvilinear structure, you must understand where and how this will happen. Then follows the installation of a metal profile, on which the cardboard sheets themselves are attached.

Profile frame - the main element - the skeleton of the entire future structure. The frame metal is galvanized and does not give in to corrosion. But he's so thin. "Will it?" - you reasonably ask.

Yes. The metal has stiffening ribs that are formed during manufacture and make it both strong and light.

  • Secondly - bend the profile

It is clear that in addition to bending drywall, it is imperative to bend the profile.

You have drawn the figures you need (how to mark, for example, an oval ceiling can be found in the article), and you need to transfer the markings to the ceiling strictly according to the drawing.

If the ceiling is completely marked, you can freely proceed with the installation of the main load-bearing structure from a metal profile.

NOTE

Before telling how to bend a profile for drywall, do not forget that during the installation process, the frame from the profile must strictly pass along all marking lines.

Depending on the shape of the element, the profile should be bent into the inner or outside.

When bending to the outside is required, you need to make the number of cuts you need, as shown in the diagram.

The profile is easy to cut with ordinary metal scissors.

If it is required to bend the profile inwards, the incisions can be made at an angle.

The rigidity of the profile frame is very important.

Of course, smooth bends will not work on the profile, but drywall will completely hide this drawback.

And yet, the most the best option will be when the direct contact of the drywall with the profile will be very close.
When the work is done competently and accurately, the frame design will turn out to be light and rigid.

IMPORTANT

Poor quality assembled frame will entail subsequent cracking of the drywall joints and the possible complete collapse of the entire structure.

  • And finally, the third difficult task is the installation of the sheet (or element) itself.

Consider several options for solving how to bend drywall with your own hands correctly:

Ways to bend drywall with your own hands

1 WAY

Drywall at first glance is a hard material, but it can be bent by simply pulling self-tapping screws to the frame from the profile.

The arc will not turn out too steep, but the figures on the plasterboard ceiling can be smooth and rounded, relatively smooth bends are not uncommon. Then it is better to take thin sheets for work.

It is necessary to draw a sheet of drywall to the frame with self-tapping screws carefully and very evenly.

Let's present some characteristics regarding the bending radius, as well as the thickness of the drywall sheet.

ADVICE

When you use a thin sheet of drywall, do two coats. But the first layer must overlap with the second.

This is a pretty simple way. Mandatory conditions for its implementation are accuracy and attentiveness.

NOTE

If a sheet of cardboard is cracked, don't worry. Having fixed it completely, use a knife to expand the crack. Then (when finishing) it will be possible to fill it with putty and the seam will not be visible at all.

2 WAY

Consider the second way to bend drywall in a semicircle in order to make figures with your own hands.
To make a sharp bend from a sheet of cardboard, proceed as next instruction.
You will need water, an ordinary awl.

  • Cut out the element to be mounted from drywall.
  • Wet it.
  • But first, you need to make a number of pins with an awl on the sheet at the bend.
  • The pins are made across the sheet.
  • However, the awl should only penetrate up to half the entire thickness of the sheet.

  • Holes from the awl cannot be through. They must be in multiple columns. It depends on the shape of the required element.

ADVICE

You can install a limiter on the awl, the same as on the drill for the drill.

  • After the implementation of the punctures, the sheet must be wetted.
  • Punctures are carried out only from the inside of a sheet of cardboard.
  • You can wet the puncture sites from the awl.
  • Water must necessarily moisten the leaf well.
  • However, to speak reverse side she shouldn't.

NOTE

You can carry out the wetting procedure test on an unnecessary sheet of cardboard.

  • The gypsum board moistened in this way can be installed and fastened.
  • Having dried fixed, it will take the necessary shape.

The configuration of plasterboard ceiling elements can sometimes be very complicated, but this method will definitely help you.
The main difficulty is determining the start time of the sheet fold. Use the advice on a test piece of cardboard.

3 WAY

Another option on how to bend drywall in a semicircle is an element-by-element method.

The point is the following.

  • Small or narrow drywall elements are cut.
  • Then they are attached to the frame one by one.
  • Then, all seams must, of course, be carefully puttied.

However, this method takes a lot of time and consumes excess material. (Putty - for sure!)

4 WAY

Finally, there is another option to bend a sheet of cardboard.

  • Perpendicular cuts are made (on one side) of the sheet.
  • The cuts will not be through, but will be made only at 70% of the thickness of the entire sheet.

IMPORTANT

Make cuts only hand saw impossible. A circular saw with regulation on depth of a knife can help. But then - the probability of breakage of the sheet is high in places of cut.

When the seams are still outside, then in the future they are puttied in the same way as other drywall elements.

How to bend drywall in a fit of embodiment of the bold design solutions: 3 levels of coolness

Have you ever wondered: how to bend drywall at home? Personally, I was interested in the answer to it from the very first acquaintance with such interesting material. After all, in this way you can get away from the dull and boring rectangular shapes, enlivening the interior with smooth lines that are more pleasing to the eye. And I found several solutions to this problem at once, which differ in complexity and the level of steepness of the bend. They will be discussed further.

Let's start learning

Gypsum board is gypsum board, covered with cardboard sheets on both sides. Cardboard in any state has high elasticity, while in gypsum it changes depending on the level of its humidity. That is, GKL can be bent, despite its apparent strength, but this must be done correctly in order to avoid a fracture.

But, if you do not spoil the drywall with your own hands, then you can safely count on the appearance of arches, curly, columns and other similar masterpieces of design art in your apartment or private house.

Before bending drywall, it is necessary to determine the steepness of the bend being created, since the choice of technology for implementing the plan will depend on this.

Toughness level #1: bending radius - 1000-2750 mm

How to bend drywall in a semicircle whose radius exceeds one meter? Very simple: use the so-called "dry" method, which is the easiest to implement and looks like this:

  1. First thing select the thickness of the drywall sheet, since it is possible to bend drywall, which has an impressive thickness, in the described way only up to a certain limit:

If you don't have time to use more sophisticated drywall bending techniques, but you can afford to spend a little more on the material itself, then opt for arched samples. Their price is slightly higher, but the thickness is only 6.5 mm, and inside the gypsum core itself there is a reinforcing mesh that prevents a fracture.

  1. Further, the instruction branches again and offers two options for action, I tested both:
  • The first one is for the very lazy, and it consists in the fact that the section is simply slowly and carefully fastened with self-tapping screws to a pre-curved and installed profile . In this case, the step between the fasteners must be observed no more than 50 mm;

In no case do not try to bend the GKL across, and not along, as you will simply break it with such treatment.

  • The second one will require more preparatory work consisting in making a special template. But then the bending process itself is then easier and safer for the material. You can familiarize yourself with the intricacies of creating such a device in the following diagram. I will only note that the radius of the structure should be less than the radius of the future semicircle, and the width should be less than the bending sheet:

But how to bend drywall in a semicircle using a ready-made template? It is enough to gently bend it through the device and fix it in this position until the sheet takes the desired shape.

Toughness level #2: bending radius - 500-1000 mm

Now let's figure out how to bend drywall for an arch with a radius of less than one meter, using the so-called "wet" method. I like it the most, because it allows you to create amazing figures without crippling the sheet itself with “fanaticism”, which I will discuss in the description of the next more radical method.

So let's get started:

  1. We prepare everything you need:

The roller must be chosen in such a way that its needles are not longer than half the thickness of the sheet you are bending and not shorter than one third. In the first case, you can simply destroy the entire product, and in the second, you can not get the desired effect.

  1. We process with a needle roller the side of the drywall section that will subsequently shrink. Needles in this case perform two functions at once:
  • Weaken the strength of the cardboard "wrapper";
  • Create water access to the drywall core;

Instead of such a specific tool, you can use an awl, making holes every 10-15 mm. It will take more time and you will have to personally control the depth of penetration, but it will save a little on the family budget.

  1. Now with a brush, roller or sponge moisten the pierced area with water within 10-15 minutes. Depending on the thickness of the sheet, the process may need to be repeated several times. Just make sure that liquid does not get on the second side, as this will lead to the destruction of the sample.

What is happening? Why such difficulties? The fact is that gypsum tends to become elastic and pliable when moistened, which does not prevent it from completely restoring all its former specifications after drying;

  1. Carefully bend the object and fasten it to the prepared place using self-tapping screws. You can also use a special template as in the previous case;

  1. After about a day, the drywall sheet becomes dry and durable again, but in a new form.

It is noteworthy that the described procedure is also the answer to the question: "How to straighten drywall?" Here you can also just perforate the convex side this time, moisten it and carefully give the sheet its original shape.

Toughness level #3: bending radius - 150-500 mm

How to bend drywall into a very indecent squiggle, the radius of which will not exceed half a meter, or even drop to 15 cm at all? A very radical approach will help here, which involves gutting the object:

  1. We take sharp knife and from the back of the sheet we apply transverse cuts to the depth of the front cardboard itself every 30-50 mm. The smaller the radius of the future arch, the shorter the step. As a result, you have in your hands the “unfortunate victim”, who somehow makes up another whole only thanks to the remaining cardboard layer;

Be extremely careful in the process of making incisions so as not to damage the front of the GKL, because if you do this, you can already throw it away and take on a new “victim”.

  1. Now carefully, so as not to ruin the drywall sheet completely, fasten it to the prepared place with self-tapping screws starting from the middle and gradually moving towards the edges. At the same time, fasteners must hold each trimmed fragment, which leads to a large consumption of screws;

  1. Thoroughly putty all the cracks and cuts.

Here you can also apply a template, and quite justifiably. The fact is that having fixed the cut sheet immediately on the frame, you will no longer be able to fully repair the recesses created in it with high quality. But if you first lay it on a fixture made in advance, then all damage can be repaired, for example, with the well-proven Knauf Uniflot putty, which, when frozen, will turn the object back into a solid product.

Conclusion

Now you know how to bend drywall even into an arch, even into a "ram's horn". The most important thing in all the methods I have described is the careful handling of the drywall sheet, since it can be broken during “dry” bending, and spoiled during “wet” perforation, and completely destroyed with a radical approach with the creation of incisions.
