Instructions on how to fill out a log book for fire extinguishers

The fire extinguishers register is an important document, since its presence is required by the fire supervision inspectorate. Therefore, data related to the accounting and maintenance of fire extinguishers must be entered into the log on time. Any official appointed by the manager can keep the journal. Usually, this is done by a person who has attended a fire safety course in advance. Read the overview of the characteristics of the carbon dioxide fire extinguisher OU-2

Before putting a fire extinguisher into operation, it is necessary to carry out an initial check. The body and accessories must not have external damage, a brief instruction for use and the main properties of the fire extinguisher must be printed on the body. The total mass of the fire extinguisher is also checked. It must match the weight that is mentioned in the passport. Further, this characteristic is checked annually after the start of operation. If the fire extinguisher is operated with compressed gas, the pressure value is checked. In addition, some fire extinguishers are supplied with pressure gauges and pressure indicators, whose serviceability must also be checked periodically. Each new fire extinguisher must be sealed, the date of manufacture of the extinguisher is indicated on the seal.

If the fire extinguisher has passed the initial inspection, a special identification number is applied to its body. The same number is used when entering data about a fire extinguisher in the log book. In fact, there are no approved standards for logging. However, there is an official form that most organizations use. The form is divided into columns, which include various information taken from the passport and from the results of the inspection of the fire extinguisher. Maintenance log

The fire extinguisher maintenance log includes the results of all checks that the fire extinguisher has undergone during its entire operation. Depending on the type of fire extinguisher, the check can be carried out just once a season or once a year. The quarterly inspection includes a surface inspection of the extinguisher body and location. Every year, in addition to the above items, the total weight of the extinguisher is checked. It is common for fire extinguishers to lose mass within acceptable limits. But if the mass level is significantly lower than stated in the operational passport, then this indicates a malfunction of the fire extinguisher. In case of non-compliance with certain standards, an unscheduled recharge of the fire extinguisher is carried out. All maintenance data are recorded in a corresponding logbook. The form required for filling is divided into 7 columns, in each of which the relevant information is entered:

  1. Date of inspection of the fire extinguisher.
  2. Assessment of the appearance of the fire extinguisher.
  3. Full mass.
  4. Pressure (if the extinguisher is equipped with a pressure indicator) and body weight.
  5. Assessment of the undercarriage if the fire extinguisher is mobile.
  6. Measures that have been taken to eliminate the identified deficiencies.
  7. Signature, as well as the surname and initials of the official responsible for the maintenance of the fire extinguisher.
