General information about the log book and maintenance of fire extinguishers

Fire extinguishers should be installed in any area where people are or any activity is taking place in case of fire. They are installed by employees appointed by the management. They are also required to keep records and maintain fire extinguishing equipment. Usually these are caretakers or technical workers.

The fire extinguisher accounting and maintenance log does not have a specially approved form. During the initial execution of this document, the form should be agreed in advance with the inspecting fire authorities. This is not necessary, but in some cases it will help to avoid friction with the controlling services.

Concept and features

The journal should be filled in regularly, accurately enter information on the date of inspection of fire extinguishers and on their guaranteed use. This is necessary for your own control and maintenance of devices in working order, as well as for checking by firefighters.

Fire extinguishers must always be in good working order, as this will allow to extinguish the fire in a timely manner and save the life and health of employees. And the accounting of information about the maintenance of these devices will make it possible to maintain them in working position.

The purpose

Such a log must necessarily perform the function of monitoring fire extinguishing devices. In particular, they should display information about

  • The number of fire extinguishers on the balance sheet;
  • Date of arrival at the enterprise;
  • The date of the check of the fire extinguisher;
  • Date of recharging the device and the duration of the warranty.

The employee responsible for completing and maintaining this journal should ensure that the document is completed on time. Since a working fire extinguisher in an emergency moment can help save not only property, but the life and health of people. If, in the event of a check by the fire inspectorate, there is no completed log on site, the inspector will have the right to impose a penalty on the company's management.

The form

There is no general form of such logging. Each enterprise or organization has the right to independently develop its own form. But it is better to consult with experts in the fire department and take into account all their recommendations.

  • The journal is filled in in the standard A-4 format. It usually already has marked up columns and there you just need to enter information about metering devices.
  • At the beginning of all records must be indicated who owns the given fire extinguishers.
  • There should also be a record of who is responsible for filling out the log and is responsible for the serviceability of fire extinguishers.
  • The employee charged with this mission must be trained in the applicable fire codes and regulations. To do this, he must complete training in the appropriate courses and obtain a certificate (admission) to such work.

How to properly maintain such a document

Requirements

Since there are no special requirements for maintaining such a log, a standard "barn" book is usually used. If your enterprise has several fire extinguishers, a separate page is allocated for each. The log book for accounting and maintenance of fire extinguishers should be numbered and laced, however, like any other log.

On the reverse side, the lacing should be sealed with an ordinary small sheet of paper. On this sheet you need to put the seal of the enterprise, the signature of the head, the date.

Registration

At the top of the page, you will need to specify:

  • Fire extinguisher number and place where it is installed;
  • Fire extinguisher type;
  • Its weight;
  • The weight of the charge filled into the fire fighting device;
  • Date, month and year of the previous inspection of the fire extinguisher;
  • Date, month, year of the next control of the extinguishing agent.

Please fill in the table below. In each column, the results of the inspection of devices are sequentially entered:

  1. The first column should indicate the date when maintenance or inspection of the fire extinguisher was carried out;
  2. The following describes the general condition of the instrument. It should be free of chips and dents. The seals must not be broken.
  3. The third column evaluates the state of the device - good, excellent, satisfactory;
  4. Next, you need to transfer the data on the total mass of the fire extinguisher from the label to the log;
  5. Net weight and pressure are also logged from the extinguisher tag;
  6. If you have a mobile fire extinguisher installed, you will need to enter information about the condition of its chassis. If you have a regular fire extinguisher, then you need to put a dash in the column;
  7. In the next column, they usually write what measures were taken to eliminate the shortcomings, if any. If no shortcomings were noticed, then we also put a dash;
  8. In the last column, you should leave your signature to the person who is responsible for filling out the log and the proper condition of the fire extinguishing devices in the enterprise. The position and date of the entry must be indicated.

Frequency of filling and shelf life

The fire extinguishers register should be filled in once every six months. That is, every six months it is necessary to check fire extinguishers for readiness for fire extinguishing. If you have a device that needs to be refilled, then this should be done once every 5 years. But this period may be less, it all depends on the state of the fire extinguisher.
