Drum 16 dimensions. Dimensions of cable reels. Design parameters of wooden drums
Wooden drums are designed for winding and transporting cables and wires. Currently, they are the main type of packaging for cable products. The design of drums in accordance with GOST 5151-79 is shown in the figure, and the dimensions are given in the table. The drum number corresponds to the diameter of the cheek in decimeters.
To protect the outer turns of a cable or wire wound on a drum from mechanical damage during transportation and storage, drum casing or packing with mats is used.
The main the traditional way sheathing is the imposition of a continuous row of boards on the edges of the cheeks and fastening them with nails through a steel tape that wraps around the edges of the sheathing.
The dimensions of the sheathing boards and the steel strip are shown in the table.
In permitted cases, partial sheathing can be performed, in which the gaps between the boards are no more than 50% of their width.

Packing mats are a continuous row of boards of the same length held together by steel tape or wire, which are wrapped around a reel-wound cable or wire during packing. The mats are made with gaps between the boards. The sum of the gaps should not exceed 50% of the total length of the M-200 mat and 30% for other types. As reference material the table shows the lengths of the cable or wire that can be wound on drums of certain standard sizes.

In accordance with GOST 5151-79, all wooden cable drums are used for cables with voltage up to 10 kV. Drums are made from softwood lumber or soft larch trees: alder, poplar, willow, linden, aspen (with the exception of birch).
Design parameters of protective materials for cable drum 16
To protect the cable loops on the drum during transportation and storage, the drum is covered with planks fastened with steel tape or laid with mats.
It is permissible to cover drum No. 16 through a board with a thickness of at least 25 mm and a width of no more than 250 mm, while the sum of the gaps between the boards should not exceed 50%. For reliability, the sheathing is fastened with steel tape 0.3-0.5 mm thick and at least 25-35 mm wide. According to GOST, mats are made from planks or obapol. Today manufacturers in the quality of mats use modern materials, films, polyester materials, etc., reducing the risk of damage to the cable sheath and cores.
Norms of winding a cable on a drum 16
Maximum length the cable that can be wound on the drum depends on the diameter of the cable itself. The calculated data are shown in the table below.
