Folk holiday October 25 - Martyrs Prov, Tarakh and Andronicus

October 25, 2018 (old style date - October 12) is a folk holiday in honor of the memory of the three holy martyrs - Prov, Tarakh and Andronicus.

In 304, during the reign of Diocletian and Maximian, they were captured in the city of Pompeopolis. They were brought to the city of Tarsus for trial before the proconsul Maxim. He was refused all requests to renounce the faith and offer sacrifice to pagan idols. When asked about the name, each answered that his name was a Christian, and it was dearer to him than his own, given by his parents at birth.

Maxim ordered to torture them. Seeing that the will of the men did not weaken, he gave orders to throw the martyrs to be devoured by wild beasts. The animals did not touch them. Then the proconsul ordered to stab and cut Andronicus, Prov and Tarakh into pieces.

Having finished with the execution, he ordered to mix their bodies with the bodies of the wicked so that the Christians could not carry them away. 10 soldiers were assigned as guards.

When the Christians wanted to take the bodies, they prayed to the Lord God for help, and then a roar and an earthquake hit the ground. The soldiers fled, and three candles lit up over the torn remains of the saints. The relics of the martyrs were taken and buried in a cave.

Transfer of shrines

October 25 marks the transfer of the icon of the Virgin, part of the Tree of the Cross of the Lord, the right hand of John the Baptist.

From Sebastia to Antioch

The decapitated body of John the Baptist was buried next to the tomb of the prophet Elisha in ancient Samaria - the capital of the Kingdom of Israel, which Herod I renamed Sebasta (known to us as Sebastia). The Apostle Luke, returning to his native Antioch, wished to take with him an incorruptible body, but the Sebastian Christians opposed this and allowed him to take only right hand, which was baptized by Jesus Christ in Jordan.

In Antioch

The time of Julian the Apostate came, when Christians were subjected to the most severe persecution. Christian shrines were mercilessly destroyed: the temples collapsed, the relics of the saints were removed from the graves and burned. The body of John the Baptist was destroyed without a trace.

The hand of the prophet was preserved - the inhabitants of Antioch hid it in one of the city towers, from where it was retrieved only after the death of the lawless king. And the time came for the glory of the Forerunner's right hand, and various miracles were performed by it.

Always on Epiphany Eve, the bishop raised the shrine above the crowd - and when it shrank, and when it straightened, predicting either hunger or abundance. But soon Antioch was captured by the Saracens - they captured a priceless relic.

From Antioch to Constantinople

In the 10th century, a certain deacon Job of Antioch stole the right hand from the Hagarians and took it to the city of Chalcedon, from where it was brought to Constantinople by order of the Byzantine emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus. At first, the right hand was in the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos of Farskaya, then she was transferred to the Pamakaristos monastery, and, finally, in the temple of Hagia Sophia, she found peace. But, as it turned out, not for long. In 1453, Constantinople was captured by the Ottomans.

At the Hospitallers

The Turks, however, showed complete reverence for the Christian shrine. And as a sign of reconciliation with the Hospitallers - the warlike knights of the Order of St. John, Sultan Bayezid II sends them the hand of the Prophet to the island of Rhodes, where their residence was. In Port, the finger, separated from the right hand, remained, which was transferred to the Studite monastery of John the Baptist.

Peace with the Johannites turned out to be short, and already in 1522 the Turks captured the island of Rhodes. The knights fled to Malta, taking with them, in addition to the hand of the Prophet, a part of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord and the Filerma Icon of the Mother of God. Fifty years later, they erected the Church of St. John in Malta specifically for the storage of shrines. They stayed there for more than two hundred years.

In Russia

In August 1799, after Napoleon seized the island of Malta, the Knights of the Order of Malta handed over the relics they kept. Russian emperor Paul I, who, as you know, favored the Order of Malta.

Before the revolution, relics were kept in the Winter Palace, and only once a year they were transported to Gatchina, where they were exhibited for worship. When in 1923 the Italian government asked Moscow to return the relics of the Order of Malta, it turned out that this was impossible - they disappeared without a trace.

At the request of the People's Commissariat of Education, the rector of the Pavlovsk Cathedral in Gatchina, Archpriest Andrei Shotovsky, wrote: “The Protopresbyter of the Winter Palace, Father A. Dernov, brought relics: a part of the tree of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord, the right hand of St. John the Baptist and the icon of the Filermian Mother of God. All these relics were brought in the form in which they have always been brought to the cathedral on October 12, that is, on the icon of the Mother of God - a robe and caskets for relics and a cross.

After the divine service performed by the Metropolitan of Petrograd, these shrines were exhibited for some time in the cathedral for the worship of believers in the city of Gatchina. " Further, Father Andrei reported that the next day Count Ignatiev arrived at the cathedral, accompanied by an officer. The rector of the cathedral, Archpriest John the Epiphany, packed the relics in a case and handed them over to the count, who took them away in an unknown direction.

Throughout Europe - to Serbia

The relics were discovered in Estonia, where for some time they were in Orthodox Cathedral in Revel, but then were transported to Denmark by the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna - the mother of Nicholas II. After her death in 1928, her daughters Xenia and Olga donated the shrines to the head of the Russian Church Abroad, Metropolitan Anthony Khrapovitsky, and for some time they were in the Orthodox cathedral in Berlin. In 1932, Bishop Tikhon, who took care of the Berlin flock, handed over the shrines to the Yugoslav king Alexander Karadjordievich.

They were housed first in the chapel in the royal palace and then in the church of the country palace in Dedinja. They say that Vladyka Nikolai Velimirovich exclaimed then: "The right hand, which, having scooped up the Jordanian water, rose above the head of Christ, is among us!"

The clergy put a lot of effort into returning them and putting them in the Cetinje Monastery. But only on October 30, 1994, at the opening of the Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan of Montenegro and Primorsky Amphilochius finally announced that under the modest name of church "things" found in the monastery of St. Basil, the greatest Christian shrines were hiding: the Filermian icon of the Mother of God, written according to legend by the Apostle Luke (by the way, the icon remained in the Cetinje Historical Museum), a particle of a tree from the Life-giving Cross of the Lord and the right hand of St. John the Baptist.

In 988, the icon was brought to Korsun and presented to Saint Prince Vladimir, Equal to the Apostles. When the Novgorodians adopted Christianity, Saint Vladimir sent them this image. Appearance of the Kaluga Icon of the Mother of God

It happened in 1748 in the village of Tinkovo, near Kaluga, in the house of the landowner Vasily Kondratyevich Khitrovo. Khitrovo's two maids were sorting out old things in the attic of his house. One of them, Evdokia, distinguished by an unrestrained disposition, allowed herself harsh and even obscene speech.

A friend began to admonish her, and during a bickering among things, she accidentally discovered a large roll of austere canvas. Unfolding it, the girl saw an image of a woman in a dark robe with a book in her hands. Taking the image for a portrait of a nun and wishing to reason with Evdokia, she threatened her with the wrath of the abbess. Evdokia answered her friend's words with abuse and, succumbing to irritation, spat on her face.

She immediately had a seizure and fell unconscious. A frightened friend told about what happened in the house. The next night, the Queen of Heaven appeared to Evdokia's parents and revealed to them that it was their daughter who was blasphemously laughing at her and commanded them to perform a prayer service in front of the desecrated icon, and sprinkle the patient with water consecrated at the prayer service. After the prayer service, Evdokia recovered, and Khitrovo took miraculous icon to her home, where healings plentifully flowed from her to those who came to her with faith.

Subsequently, the icon was transferred to the parish church in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in the village of Kaluzhka. A list from her was sent to Kaluga. She is currently in the Kaluga Cathedral.

Traditions and rituals October 25

On this day, it is forbidden to quarrel, wash, paint, knock out mattresses and feather beds, kick pets, buy candles for the house in churches, laugh loudly, and read cards.

Women tried not to give birth on this holiday, because, according to legend, a child in life will have a lot of grief.

If someone knocks on the door that day, then you cannot ask: "Who is there?", Otherwise trouble will settle in the house, and all household members will suffer. Traditionally, a ribbon was tied on the door wicket and a sacred prayer was said, which protected people from troubles and torments.

On Andron the Astrologer, people prayed that the star of a person's life would not roll over the mountain. It is believed that these celestial bodies have big influence on the fate of people. With the advent of new star a person is born, and with extinction he dies. The brighter his star, the happier fate will be. In the old days, people were afraid of stargazing, since it was considered a harbinger of war, epidemics, the death of many people or the entire state.

Signs of the day

  • Many bright stars are a sign of imminent frost, and dim ones are a sign of prolonged rains and thaws.
  • Strong twinkling of blue stars in the sky - towards the snow.
  • If there are many stars shining in a clear sky, then wait good harvest peas.
  • If the wind blows weakly in one direction, then cloudy weather will be long.
  • If the stars are falling, the wind will start soon.

Troparion of the Apostle Philip, Tone 3: Saint Philip the Apostle ... (see Appendix 2) Kontakion of the Apostle Philip, voice 4: The most wonderful catcher of tongues / and the interlocutor of the disciples of Christ, / the pre-chosen apostles, / Philip now gives the world healing God, / covers from the circumstances of that // you praise. Troparion of the Monk Theophanes, Bishop of Nicea, voice 8: Orthodoxy admonition, piety to the teacher and purity, / the universal luminary, the bishops, the divinely inspired fertilization, / Theophanes the wisdom, by thy teachings, all enlightened by thy teachings. Kontakion of the Monk Theophanes, Bishop of Nicea, voice 2: Having raised Christ's Divine Incarnation, / you have denounced the airless enemies to the end, / Theophanes are wonderful.

The Optina monastery has tremendous spiritual significance for the life of our entire Church, because this land, these walls, this air, these landscapes, everything that surrounds us - all this is filled with God's grace. And not because there are beautiful places here, and not because the architecture of the temples is wonderful, but because in this place the great prayerful feat of those fathers, whom you and I praise today, were performed. The grace of God has the power to influence not only the rational, living, but also the inanimate, unreasonable, because all this is God's creation. God has a special relationship to His creation and in a manner unknown to man supports the existence of both the cosmos, the universe, and our earth. But in certain places, the Divine grace that maintains the world order is present in an exceptional way, and this happens because of the special connection with God that these places had in the past and have in the present.

Liturgical instructions awaiting

Many Russians are wondering what holiday is today. Someone is interested in professional and public holidays, and someone is keenly interested in Orthodox holidays... It is about the latter that we will talk about today.

The fact is that today is special in this aspect. Indeed, on October 9, 2017, an important holiday from the church point of view falls, which is called the Day of Remembrance of John the Theologian.

The repose of the holy apostle and evangelist John the Theologian is celebrated Orthodox Church October 9 in a new style. The Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian was the son of Zebedee and Salome - the daughter of Saint Joseph the Betrothed. Simultaneously with his older brother Jacob, he was called by Jesus Christ to be among His disciples on Lake Gennesaret. Leaving their father behind, both brothers followed Christ.

The Apostle John was especially loved by the Savior for sacrificial love and virgin purity. After his calling, the apostle did not part with the Lord and was one of the three disciples whom He especially brought closer to Him. Saint John the Theologian was present at the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus by the Lord and was a witness of the Transfiguration of the Lord at Tabor.

During the Last Supper, he reclined next to the Lord and, at the sign of the Apostle Peter, leaning against the Savior's chest, asked about the name of the traitor. The Apostle John followed the Lord when He, bound, was led from the Garden of Gethsemane to the judgment of the wicked high priests Anna and Caiaphas, he was in the bishop's court during the interrogation of his Divine Teacher and relentlessly followed Him along Way of the Cross grieving with all my heart. At the foot of the Cross, he wept with the Mother of God and heard the words of the crucified Lord addressed to Her from the height of the Cross: "Woman, behold thy son" and to him: "Behold thy Mother."

From that time, the Apostle John, as loving son, cared about Blessed Virgin Mary and served Her until Her Dormition, never leaving Jerusalem. After the Dormition of the Mother of God, the Apostle John, according to the lot that fell to him, went to Ephesus and other cities of Asia Minor to preach the Gospel, taking with him his disciple Prokhor. They set off on a ship that sank during a violent storm. All the travelers were thrown onto dry land, only the Apostle John remained in the depths of the sea. Prokhor sobbed bitterly, having lost his spiritual father and a preceptor, and went to Ephesus alone.

They pray to John the Theologian for healing from various ailments, for advice and love between spouses, for maintaining purity and chastity. Thanks to miraculous prayers, childless women found the happiness of motherhood.

The Orthodox believe that prayers in front of his icon help to find good friends, to find strong family and protect her from quarrels and evil intentions of other people.

Fishermen pray to the Apostle for protection from accidents on the water and for a good catch.

Prayer

O great and all-praiseworthy apostle and evangelist John the Theologian, confidante of Christ, our warm intercessor and quick helper in sorrow! Pray the Lord God to grant us the abandonment of all our sins, who have sinned greatly from our youth, in all our life by our deeds, words, thoughts and all our feelings. In the exodus of our souls, help us, sinners (names), to get rid of airy ordeals and eternal torment, and by your merciful intercession we glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and forever. Amen.
