The Nativity fast is one of the oldest in Christianity, and historical sources have brought to us information that at least in the fourth century AD this fast already existed for sure.

Christmas post in it modern version lasts exactly 40 days before the holiday of Christmas, from 28 November to 6 January. This is if we are talking about the Gregorian calendar. According to the Church, Julian, calendar, fasting begins on November 15 and ends on December 24. Throughout our century, the discrepancy of 13 days between the two calendars will remain, therefore for us the period of the secular calendar from November 28 to January 6 is the usual dates for the beginning and end of the Nativity Fast.

Nativity Fast is a time of preparation for one of the most important holidays of the whole year for all Christians - Christmas.

Fasting is, as usual, a time of abstinence from food, but this is not the main thing in fasting. Abstinence in food is not the meaning and not the essence of fasting, but only a means of achieving spiritual purification. During fasting, one should also not be angry, give vent to passions and lusts, one should not lie and slander, one should refrain from all human weaknesses. Pride in fasting is considered a sin; those who do not observe it should not be considered unworthy people. Such thoughts make a Christian an even more unworthy person.

As for food, the following meals are provided on the Nativity Fast on days of the week. Until January 2, the following diet is allowed:

Monday - dry eating (vegetable food without heat treatment, uncooked food - bread is allowed, but vegetable oils, wine and hot drinks are not allowed),
Tuesday - you can eat hot food with vegetable oil (of course, without meat, dairy products and eggs),
Wednesday - dry eating,
Thursday - you can eat hot food with vegetable oil,
Friday - dry eating,
Saturday - for hot food with vegetable oil, fish and wine can be included in the diet,
Sunday is the same as Saturday.

After January 2 and before the 5th, on the most the last days fasting, the diet usually becomes more strict - on Saturday and Sunday meals exclude fish and wine. In 2018, this provision is not relevant - the period January 2-5 falls on weekdays.

Please note that on the feast of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos, December 4, the diet is the same as for weekends. In 2017, this holiday falls on Monday, so instead of dry eating on this holiday, you can have hot food with fish and wine.

Of course, by allowing the use of wine, the church means moderation in the use of this drink.

On January 6, on Christmas Eve, after Vespers, believers can begin the celebration of Christmas with sweet porridge made from wheat, rice or other cereals.
