Accessories for a hand router: what you can make with your own hands or buy. How to make a picture frame using a router. How to make picture frames using a hand router. Parallel stop for making straight and curved cuts Make a frame for a picture on a frame

Wooden frames for paintings or photos add a certain style and solidity to the interior of your apartment. You can make such products yourself using a small set of hand-held power tools. If necessary, ready-made profile bars can be bought in stores; even wooden skirting boards and platbands are suitable.

Bars, blanks for frames are usually profiled, such parts are finished form called "baguettes". You can buy them in the store, although it cannot be said that they are very cheap. If you have some necessary tools and hands grow from where they need to, then it is much more profitable to make the frames yourself. Moreover, if you need not just one product, but a whole set, different sizes, profiles and colors.

In general, frames can be assembled from simple rectangular slats; this style exists and is used even by serious manufacturers. But it’s better to choose something more classic; for example, I make profiles on bars for frames with a special plinth cutter. A deep and wide cutter is installed on a stationary router.

If you only have a hand router, then a similar profile can be made in two ways:
1. Go through the profile in several passes. First, a deep ledge is made - a quarter, then we go through the profiles along the upper and lower platforms.
2. Make a composite baguette, glued together from two profile slats. The second option gives much more possibilities to select a design.

These bars are 55 mm wide. and thickness - 30 mm. , prepared for relatively small frames. In addition to the profile on back side done manual router quarter, quarter width can be 10mm. , and the depth depends on the depth of the baguette profile and the thickness of the picture. By the way, a quarter can be made after gluing the frame, also with a hand router.

But in exactly the same way you can make a frame for a large painting. In the photo above the frame measures 1100 mm. by 800 mm. . Only here, to strengthen the corners, in addition to the inserted flat tenons, dowels and round inserted tenons are also glued in. Frame parts 70 mm wide. and 35 mm thick. To create a more textured profile, miter cuts were made in two projections, that is, the part itself was also at an angle when cutting.

Even when using ready-made moldings, such as skirting boards, you can get a completely acceptable result.

Before you start sawing the ends, you need to mark the length of the parts. To do this, measure the height and width of the picture and transfer the dimensions to the bars.
The painting or photograph will be installed in a quarter, so we mark the parts according to inside quarters.
Another important condition, for good gluing it is important that paired parts are the same length.

When all the corners have been filed, we assemble the frame “dry” and check the accuracy of the corners. We will glue the corners; to do this, they need to be greased with glue and squeezed until completely dry. You can compress it with special corner clamps, they are sold in stores.

There is one more original version, tie a loop from a rubber band half the size of the perimeter of the frame, coat all ends of the parts with glue, and then pull the loop onto the frame. It’s better to do this together, stretch the rubber over the assembled frame and carefully put it on all the outer edges of the product at once. Press the frame on top with a weight until the glue dries completely.

I want to warn you that this method is risky for an inexperienced craftsman; if the rubber slips, it can hurt your eyes. So be sure to wear safety glasses!!!
The rubber itself is cut with scissors from a car inner tube, in a spiral, with a continuous tape 25-30 mm wide. . The length of the loop folded in half is approximately equal to the height of the frame.

There are other ways to compress parts when gluing, but they are more complex. The simplest option is to screw self-tapping screws into the corners from the outside, but in this case you will have to somehow seal the caps, which is not good.

When the glue dries, cut off the excess, putty and sand it if necessary. After varnishing, the outer tenon is not too noticeable, only upon careful inspection. A frame with spikes becomes quite strong and durable; it can be milled (if you didn’t make quarters right away), sanded and painted.

It's hard to find a home or office that doesn't have space for paintings and photographs. But simply attaching a photograph or a masterpiece of art to the wall will be ugly and absurd. It is precisely in order to frame photographs and paintings that frames were invented. With their help, you can refine the interior and add comfort to the premises. Nowadays there are millions of frame options in stores, but it is not always possible to find what suits your home. That is why we will tell you how to make a frame with your own hands, while spending a minimum of money and effort. You need to start by choosing a design for your future craft.

Deciding on the design choice

What you need to pay attention to when choosing a design for a frame:

  • will it fit into the overall interior of the room;
  • the frame must be in one color scheme with images, not with walls;
  • the frame should complement the image.

To achieve the desired result, you need to carefully consider the material from which the frame will be made.

Material selection

There are no special restrictions on the material. The only thing that remains unchanged is the base on which the decorations will be glued. It should be dense, strong and not get wet from glue. Thick cardboard and, of course, wood work well for the frame. Moreover, the wooden frame itself is already a completed craft. It can be varnished and will be appropriate for any interior.You can decorate the product with any available means. This could be pasta, pebbles, clothespins, buttons, beads. But do not forget that the chosen material should complement the picture. So, for example, shells will go well with a seascape, and a frame of pasta with the addition of cereals will be perfect for the kitchen.

Let's look at the two main materials from which frames are most often made - wood and polyurethane foam.

Wooden frame

Wood is a classic material used to make picture frames. Such designs are durable and fit almost any picture and room design.

To make a wooden frame, you don’t have to go to the forest to get wood, then process it and cut out the planks. You can contact hardware store and buy wooden skirting boards there. They are perfect for a product like this.

What you need:

  1. Wooden plinth. Its length and width should correspond to the size of the picture. Therefore, be sure to measure the picture before buying a plinth and do not forget that the frame will be longer than the canvas.
  2. Well sharpened knife.
  3. Scissors.
  4. Sandpaper.
  5. Furniture glue. PVA will do.
  6. Hacksaw.
  7. Small nails.
  8. Hammer.
  9. Ruler. It would be better if it was angular.
  10. Cardboard or plywood.

What to do:

For a richer look, you can use carved wooden baseboards. Their price corresponds to their appearance, so you will have to pay a decent amount for such material for the frame, but upon completion of the work it will be worth it.

Polyurethane foam frame

For women, “polyurethane foam” sounds threatening, but there is no need to be afraid, because it is ordinary polystyrene foam, only stronger. They make it out of it ceiling skirting boards, which are now used to renovate apartments. Their price is low, but the variety of patterns is impressive. Differences in manufacturing with wooden baseboard No. But don’t forget that this is not wood, so you should handle polyurethane foam more carefully. Any blow can lead to dents, or even break the entire structure.

What you need:

  1. Ceiling plinth.
  2. Hacksaw or sharp knife.
  3. Glue.
  4. Ruler.
  5. Plywood or cardboard (depending on the size and strength of the catrina).

Framing paintings in a baguette allows you to highlight them and show them in a more favorable light, plus the use of this element also has a decorative value, since most often it itself has a rather attractive appearance. Purchase ready-made options- a rather expensive pleasure, so it makes sense to understand the process of making such products yourself, especially since the result in appearance will be little different from the purchased one.

What to consider when choosing a specific option

In order for the baguette to be optimally combined with both the interior and the image, you need to remember a few very important recommendations, this is a kind of instruction on how to choose a baguette for a picture:

Compatibility with the decor Even the most luxurious and expensive frame will not look very good if it stands out from the general surroundings and looks foreign. It is very important to think not only color design, but also a stylistic option, for example, classic stucco will not suit modern interiors, and minimalism will not fit into a luxurious office trimmed with wood
Color Very important factor, on which the perception of the picture largely depends. General recommendations look like this: the color scheme should be half a tone lighter or half a tone darker than the main color of the painting or match the non-primary shade, of which there is also quite a lot in the work. Again, if the composition is dominated by warm or cold tones, then the frame should have the same design
Size The width of the frame largely determines the perception of the painting, so small works are most often placed in a wide frame, and large versions can have almost any frame width, it all depends on what will look appropriate in a given situation
Stylistics If the picture is quite simple and there are no complex elements on it, then the frame should be without frills so as not to be dissonant with the composition

Important! By revising various options The most important factor to remember is that the baguette is link between the picture and the setting, and compatibility with the image is much more important than with the interior.

Making picture frames is a simple and exciting task, especially since when decorating paintings and photographs (as a rule, all kinds of frames and frames are used. The most common option here is a club. The shapes of the blocks can also be very diverse: rectangular section or a specialty skirting board is used.

Tips and tricks for making picture and photo frames with your own hands

Approximately (to say), a frame for a photograph measuring 800x1000 mm will consist of bars 80 mm wide and 25 mm thick. In this case, the bars are cut into a “mustache”, which means at an angle of 45 degrees, after which they are glued together.

You can add volume to the ends if you not only saw the ends of the frames at an angle of 45 degrees, but also set the saw vertically at an angle of 80 degrees. This way, when gluing, the edges of the frames will rise, giving it greater depth and dimension.

It is best to use an electric, miter and hand saw, where you can set the angles of the cut, it is very difficult to cut it manually in two projections with a simple hacksaw. Using this method, you can quite simply make a voluminous deep frame using wide, although thin parts, the thickness of which is 20 mm.

However, butt gluing of the ends is by no means particularly strong and reliable, so it would be best to reinforce it with insert tenons, or self-tapping screws. Inserted tenons are quite difficult to make; they are usually made using dowels.

Of course, making a connection using self-tapping screws is much easier, only in this case you need to finish sealing the heads of the screws. You can use wooden plugs of the same type in structure for the frame parts to seal the holes, then sand everything thoroughly and then varnish it.

Another way is to insert flat pitfalls from the outer corners of the frame. For these purposes, a corner is sawed on a circular saw from the side of the edge; in addition, this can be done hand hacksaw. Then you select a tenon, a sliver that fits tightly into the cut cut and glue it. After drying, excess glue is cut off, and the place where the tenon is glued is sanded.

A quadrant is made in the frame to secure a painting or photo. It is performed using a hand router, both before and after the frame is completed.

First, even before starting work, well, decide on the size of the frame. It is made according to the size of the painting or photograph, taking into account the fact that the size of the frame, both in width and height, needs to be 15-20 mm larger from the canvas itself. That is, the watercolor should fit into a quarter of the frame for tight fixation.

Picture frame made of plastic plinth

The principle of making picture frames from plastic plinth is very simple. Ordinary plastic skirting board should be cut down, as in the previous case, under the house at 45 degrees. The elements of the future frame need to be screwed to the subframe with self-tapping screws. A stretcher is a wooden frame, receive and sign it and the canvas of the painting is stretched.

However, there are two problematic issues here. It must be taken into account that all corners of the parts do not fit perfectly. That is why you need to glue the joints with a narrow strip, which is cut from a piece of plinth.

In addition, the edges of the paintings will remain open, although it is not forbidden to close them flat material, for example, parts made of fiberboard laminate. Then compensate with some paint in accordance with the color of the frame. The edges are nailed to the subframe with thin nails.

There is always the question of how best to glue a wooden picture frame. Frames with a figured profile are joined in a “mustache”, i.e. The ends of the parts are filed at an angle of 45*. Clamps for tightening frames when gluing have existed for a long time, but the strange thing is that they continue to be invented to this day.

Moreover, such clamps are designed by the craftsmen themselves, especially those who have to make a lot of such frames as part of their work. Apparently, one single universal clamp has not yet been invented.

I don't make picture frames every day, and I usually use two methods. The first option is to tighten the parts using a special corner clamp, photo above. But this method has some inconveniences; the corner clamps that I use do not allow me to assemble small frames.

There are plenty of others simple ways gluing. Making such a device takes just a few minutes. To work, you will need a flat square platform made of chipboard or thick plywood. Support bars are screwed onto two edges with self-tapping screws. Please note that during assembly, the bars should be at an angle of 90* relative to each other. For precise installation, use a metal square.

Next, we coat the frame parts that have already been prepared and sawed at an angle with glue and tighten them using two long clamps. When compressing, be sure to check all corners of the frame with a square. The photo shows how else you can check the correct assembly. Graph paper is placed on the device platform, and during assembly you can see how the parts fit in relation to each other. And also, so that you can use your device for a long time, place paper under the corners so that the glue does not stick to the site.

The other option is more like a professional corner clamp, although in fact it is also homemade. Four separate stop angles with flanges are used here. All four corners are tightened from the inside with elastic rubber, a tension rope or a cable. IN classic version all four corners are tightened with one bolt, and the stop angles are installed on four diagonal slats.

As for this particular product, the whole problem here is to make these very corners with sides. In my opinion, the methods listed in this article are quite suitable for making a small number of frames. There is another method, an article. Although I repeat, craftsmen continue to invent corner clamps for assembling frames, everyone is looking for the most convenient option for themselves.

Product options

First, let's figure out what a picture frame is: any frame that is made of slats, slats and other similar elements made to fit the size of the element belongs to the group of products under consideration.

We will look at several of the most popular solutions that are most often chosen for implementation at home. We will study only those types for which it is easy to find raw materials and which can be made even without experience in carrying out such work.

Wood frames

Making a picture frame with your own hands using wood is classic solution, which has been used for more than a century, so the process has already been worked out and there are no problems with its implementation.

First, let's tell you what materials can be used:

  • Plinth is an excellent solution for decorating a wide variety of compositions; of course, this is not a chic option that is suitable for real works of art, but it can and should be used for sketches, sketches, handicrafts and simple paintings;

  • You can also use a platband; options with a width of 50-70 mm are best; they are great for options when pretentiousness is not needed. Such solutions are ideal for minimalist and modern interiors where simplicity and precision of lines are important;
  • Wooden carved baguette- one of the most beautiful options, which generally happens, this is due to the fact that this group The products have a very skillful finish. Of course, their price will be noticeably higher, but appearance differs quite a lot.

Now we’ll tell you how to frame a picture with your own hands.

This process consists of several steps:

  • First of all, you need to take measurements of the composition in order to understand what size the frame will be;
  • Sometimes, especially when it comes to handicrafts and other similar options, it is necessary to install the glass from the outside, accordingly, the depth of the groove will increase noticeably, this also must not be overlooked;
  • If you have the workpieces, then you can start cutting the elements using previously determined measurements. The easiest and best way is to use a miter box - this is a device that allows you to cut elements at an ideal angle of 45 degrees, which guarantees excellent joints;

  • To make a durable picture frame with your own hands, you need to very securely connect the elements together. To do this, firstly, you need to use an adhesive composition for wood, and secondly, after the composition has dried, you can strengthen the frame using a stapler. The individual parts are fixed using an angle clamp, it presses them and provides an ideal angle of 90 degrees;

Advice! If you don’t have corner clamps, you can use another option: grooves are made at the joints, and when gluing the parts together, thin plywood elements coated with glue are inserted into them; after drying, the excess parts are cut off - and you get a smooth product.

  • Next, you need to apply a decorative coating to the product, this can be either impregnation or paint, it all depends on which option fits more organically into the interior.

We looked at how to insert a picture into a baguette with your own hands; in fact, there is nothing complicated, but if you need an even simpler option, then use the solution described below.

Polyurethane foam products

If you don’t know what modern manufacturers make picture frames from, then you can be sure that the vast majority are made from polyurethane foam; unlike polystyrene foam, it does not crumble and has higher strength.

It is better to use it for work. The equipment for the production of picture frames consists of ordinary injection molding machines with special molds, and the chic appearance of the product is achieved after decorative painting.

Let's look at how to make a baguette for a picture yourself:

  • To begin with, all the required measurements are taken, after which you can begin marking the workpieces;
  • It is best to cut elements using the same miter box, but if you don’t have it, it doesn’t matter. You can get by with a knife and a triangle, cutting requires care, and if the knife is not very sharp, you can ruin the workpiece, remember this;

  • Next, you need to glue the elements, after drying which, most likely, there will be gaps at the joints; they need to be sealed using acrylic sealant. After cleaning, you can decorate with paint.

It is worth noting that this option is suitable for drawings and compositions on paper and cardboard; it is unlikely that you will be able to insert full-fledged paintings.

Sometimes a more expedient option may be to restore the picture frame, most often repainting the elements.

Conclusion

We hope that you have understood the process of making frames. Of course, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to make a round picture frame yourself, but you can master the rectangular and square options without any problems.

Instructions

You should start with the size of the future frame. Only for you, it will be for a photo 10x15 or 9x12 cm. The next step is to measure desired length, and then carefully saw off the edges of the rail at an angle of 45°. When the future sides of the frame are ready, we take the stapler and divide it into two equal L-shaped parts. With the help of such staples, you can connect the two sides of the frame so that the joint remains completely invisible. But in order to secure it more firmly, before connecting the sides with staples, you should lubricate them with glue.

After the glue has dried, the frame is ready to apply paint to its surface, and there will be room to show your imagination!

You can attach a photograph to this one with a stapler, having previously laminated the photograph. Lamination, firstly, will make it easier to clean the photo from dust and, secondly, will lighten the load on the frame.

Another, more labor-intensive way to make a frame. Initially the principle is the same. You will need wooden blocks 8x10mm for gluing the main frame and 5x35mm bars for the second frame. Their dimensions must be the same, since the corresponding sides of the frames will need to be connected perpendicularly to each other. The end result should be something similar to a box. We seal the connecting joint around the entire perimeter decorative baguette. Before use, coat it twice with glue to prevent the spray paint from damaging the surface. After the frame is dry, you can safely paint it with any paint. A painted baguette will give the finished product a simply wonderful look.

note

Be careful when painting. Do not lean the frame with the painted side against surfaces.

Helpful advice

Start painting the frame at least 2 hours after gluing. It’s better to leave the glue to dry overnight.

  • how to make a frame with your own hands from wood

It would seem that it would be easier to visit a framing workshop or buy a ready-made frame in a store. However, it is much more pleasant to frame a picture, mirror or photograph with your own hands. You can make a wooden frame using a woodworking machine, skillfully carve patterns or burn an intricate design. Such a creation is within the power of a true master. For a beginner, it’s easier to do the job using several planks or a simple slats.

You will need

  • Wood planks
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Pencil
  • Miter box
  • PVA glue
  • Staples
  • Twine
  • Fiberboard sheet or thick cardboard
  • Planer (if necessary)
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint, stain or potassium permanganate
  • Metal clamps
  • Individually selected decorative elements

Instructions

Select longitudinal and transverse wooden planks or cut a long strip into four parts. Parts of the future frame must be absolutely smooth. Plan them and carefully process them with large ones, then smaller ones. sandpaper.

Do necessary measurements and saw off the ends of the wooden frame parts in a triangle, that is, at an angle of 45 degrees. To make it more convenient to do this, and to make the joints as neat and unnoticeable as possible, use a special device - a miter box with the appropriate connectors.

Lubricate the frame with PVA glue and press all the edges tightly - at an angle of 90 degrees. Then tie the wooden frame tightly with twine to secure the corners. Make sure they don't move! Some craftsmen, to better secure homemade wooden frames, use half staples of a stationery stapler together with glue. The bracket is cut “g”-shaped into two equal halves. The corners are inserted into the middle of the cuts at the ends of the planks, after which different sides frames fit on top of each other.

Let the glue set for 15 minutes. After drying, sand the product again and decorate the wooden frame to your taste. You can simply paint it with any paint; treat with stain and varnish. Instead of stain, potassium permanganate is used - it also gives the product a brown tint.

Cut out the back of the wooden frame from very thick cardboard or fiberboard. For monolithic design It is enough to glue the backdrop with the same wood glue; If desired, you can use special metal clamps.

Helpful advice

If you want to disguise some of the roughness of a homemade wooden frame, come up with original design products. Nowadays, the decoupage technique is relevant in the interior - decorating things using decorative multi-layer paper napkins. Use nail scissors with rounded ends to cut out suitable pictures and remove the topmost colorful layer of the napkin. Glue it to the frame and cover the entire surface with clear varnish. For the best effect, you can buy a special set for decoupage - scissors, glue and varnish. Glued dry leaves, flowers and other natural materials (for example, halves of shells) look very interesting on an interior frame walnuts or shells). A simple frame for a child’s photograph can be decorated with thick colored paper and foil.

  • Picture frame

Surely everyone in the house has a photo that you don’t mind putting in a frame and hanging in a visible place so that it is always in front of your eyes. Now there are many ways to make a frame. But there are problems with making an oval one.

You will need

  • - computer with printer;
  • - A3 paper for printing;
  • - three pieces of natural felt different colors according to the size of the future frame;
  • - a device used to hang pictures;
  • - 1 sheet of thick cardboard;
  • - pencil;
  • - scissors;
  • - glue.

Instructions

First make for your product. It will consist of three oval frames of different colors and sizes, glued one on top of the other. To do this, print out the ovals created in a graphics editor on paper. The first is with external diameter sizes of 40 and 20, the second is 38 and 18, the third is 35 and 15. These internal diameter sizes are given conditionally. You determine them yourself by the size of the photograph for which you are taking, but the internal diameters of the second oval should be smaller than the internal diameters of the first, similarly with the third and second ovals. The edges of the first oval can be left smooth, but you can use scissors to create wavy patterns. Cut out the edges of the second oval, like a flower, and make the third oval 1.5-2 cm thick so that it fits completely on the second one.

Transfer each paper oval to felt and cut out. For each oval, choose a different color. Decide on the inner edges of the first oval, as they depend entirely on the photo. Try the photo on the frame. If the photo is larger, then you need to crop it a little. The third is the narrowest oval, glue it to the second. Glue the second oval to the third in the same way.

Give the glue time to dry. Cut out a thick oval slightly smaller than the first one. When the glue dries, glue the frames from around the edges to fit the photo in the middle. Attach a hanging device to the back of the frame. Let the glue dry well and then you can hang the photo on the wall.

note

If, after the frame is already made, the photo does not fit inside the frame, round off its sharp edges and trim off what is unnecessary.

Helpful advice

You can change the design of the frame yourself to suit your taste, add all sorts of little things to make the product decorative. To know when the glue has dried, read the instructions for it.

For your photo to have a finished look, it must be framed. You can, of course, use ready-made ones. A large number of A variety of PSD frames were developed by photo designers for literally every occasion. However, in order to arrange your photos in the same style (to organize a photo gallery, for example), you need to make your own, branded frame.

Instructions

So, open your photo in Photoshop and unlock the layer. To do this, double-click on the layer thumbnail and click “OK” in the window that opens.

Now you need to create a new layer. If you simply execute the “Create a new layer” command, it will be formed above the main layer. Because the new layer must be located below it by executing the command while holding down the ctrl key.

Go to the newly created layer and select “Canvas Size...” from the “Image” menu. In the window that opens, you need to set the canvas size larger than the image size. Select the unit of measurement - percentage, set the width - 10%, height - 7%. Check the “Relative” box and place it in the center. If you want to leave an autograph, signature or logo at the bottom of the frame, repeat last step, set the size of the new canvas to 0% for width, 7% for height, and position to top.

Fill this layer with black by pressing alt + delete. If you need a different frame color, fill the layer after selecting the desired color.

Now shade the photo. To do this, double-click on the photo layer or click the “Add Layer Style” button. Select “Stroke...” from the menu. Set the size to 4px, position to inside, color to white.
If the design option does not suit you, try experimenting with color, stroke size, and other blending options.

Now all that remains is to use the “Text” tool and place a signature or logo on the frame. Your frame is ready.

Are you satisfied with the result? Then write down the entire algorithm of actions in the action (menu “Window” - “Operations” - “Create operation”). Now you don't have to do the same steps for every photo. Select necessary photos, run the newly created action for each of them. The photos are ready, print them and create your own photo gallery.

  • Creating frames in Photoshop

Now it has become fashionable to make all the components of the interior with your own hands. Magnificent frames, embroideries, photographs and even your diplomas can be made with your own hands. With such wonderful homemade frames you can visually brighten even the most dull picture from your home collection. However, making a baguette is a very difficult task, requiring precision and patience.

It is very difficult to imagine a modern interior without paintings decorating the walls, framed in elegant and stylish frames. Moreover, not only works of art painted in oil are worthy of a beautiful frame - dear photographs of friends and relatives, children’s drawings, hand-embroidered or donated paintings, panels made from natural materials, paper, leather or salt dough also need a beautiful frame.

Frames give the works neatness and completeness, complement them, decorate them and place the necessary accents. A well-chosen frame for any painting is half the success of the emotional perception of the work as a whole.

But buy a ready-made picture frame in the store the right size almost impossible. In addition, you are not always satisfied with the width or color. Of course, in cities where there are framing workshops, the problem of purchasing a frame of the required format is solved quickly, but even framing one picture can almost ruin an ordinary citizen, and if you need a lot of frames, then purchasing them can become a big problem. The only way out in this situation is to make picture frames with your own hands, the material for which can be not only wood, but even some improvised material.

Wood is ideal material for frames. The products are highly durable, reliable, durable and fit perfectly into any interior. You need to start making a picture frame with your own hands by determining the dimensions of the entire product and the width of the baguette. To choose the most suitable width, you can first experiment with cardboard - cut out a frame from it and see how beautiful it will look.

Having decided on this value, it already becomes clear what width of the strip should be prepared for the baguette. The planks must be chosen to be very smooth, with straight edges, without cracks, knots, mechanical or biological damage, with a thickness of 15-20 mm. They need to be sanded very well and it is better to do this on a special machine. But if you don’t have one, then you need to stock up on several sheets of sandpaper of different grain sizes and spend a couple of hours giving the workpieces the required quality.

An ordinary smooth picture frame, even one that is very well sanded and varnished, still has a somewhat rustic appearance. Beautifully made selections will add sophistication to it, for which special devices are used - cutters. These are attachments for woodworking machines or hand tools, allowing you to make samples of various configurations.

Also, on the back side of the slats, it is necessary to provide a special recess into which the picture is inserted and which, in fact, turns an ordinary slat into a baguette.

When the material is prepared, you need to make two more most important steps, requiring maximum accuracy and attentiveness: this means cutting the planks at an angle and connecting the parts together.

The baguette must be sawed off at a strictly 45° angle. An ordinary protractor and hacksaw are unlikely to help cope with the task; in framing workshops, special machines are used for this: so-called “guillotines” and circular saws.

It is advisable to have a jigsaw and a miter box at home.

When fastening elements, you need to ensure that all the corners of the frame are straight, and the joints are very tight; it is unacceptable that even the slightest gaps remain between them.

It is recommended to fasten the prepared baguette into a single structure using special wood glue. It is better to make the connection in two stages: first glue adjacent planks together, and then, when the glue has dried, fasten both halves of the frame.

The finished frame can first be tinted with stain, and then opened with varnish, but you can do without the tone - it all depends on the interior where the picture is supposed to be placed.

It will look very beautiful if the picture is placed in a frame under glass. To do this, just take the necessary measurements and use a glass cutter.

Of course, picture frames made of wood are very beautiful, but to make them, you need not only special tools, but also at least the slightest skills in working with them. What to do if all this is missing? Then there is another way out: use alternative materials, from which, by the way, the products are no worse, and even much more interesting and creative.

Almost all options for handmade frames will require very thick cardboard as a base - 2 sheets of the same size, which are larger than the existing image by the desired width of the frame. In one of the sheets, using a stationery knife, a window is cut out in the middle, half a centimeter smaller than the size of the picture - you get some kind of frame. This frame and the whole cardboard need to be glued along the edge, on three sides: from the sides and from the bottom. The result will resemble an envelope with a large cutout on one side; it is very convenient to insert photographs, children's drawings on thin paper, or embroidered pictures into it.

The front side of the frame must be decorated; there are more than enough options for this. For example, you can decorate with natural materials: shells, cereals, seeds, dried flowers.

The frame decorated with twisted paper tubes looks very original.

You can use quilling, origami, flowers made of paper and silk ribbons, beads and rhinestones. Frames decorated with mosaics made of colored paper look amazing, ceramic tiles or CDs. If your creativity is really bad, then you can simply cover the frame with beautiful wrapping paper.

Also great for framing pictures. polyurethane stucco. Painted “wood” or plated with gold, it will practically not differ in any way from expensive products made of wood or plastic made in specialized workshops. The main thing is to be careful during the manufacturing process. Good luck with your creative endeavors.

In our time in great demand use homemade interior items. Many stores have appeared selling goods of this category. Handmade products look original; the authors put in not only imagination and skills, but also a piece of their soul. And it’s nice to have in your home not standard products from consumer goods, but an individual product, which is in a single copy. However, for such products you will have to pay a tidy sum, since authorship is valued at a high price. It will be much cheaper if you show creativity, imagination and realize your vision of a household item, for example: photo frames, paintings, wooden mirrors.

Creative plans

Before taking on any work, you should always draw up rough plan actions, prepare materials and the item you want to frame. The finished product should fit organically into the interior of the room, be it an office or a residential apartment. The frame cannot but match the style of the overall interior. Also, the materials from which frames are made vary greatly in texture, quality, and color. The wooden frame itself can be in a simple style, or it can be with beautiful openwork carvings.

Even a simple, even frame made of wood is complemented with design elements that will give it a special style and originality. You also need to decide what exactly to focus on in your work. If the main thing in the project is the design of a finished frame, then it can be purchased in a store and transformed into a masterpiece at home. If the frame itself becomes the object of creativity, then it is better to make it yourself.

Selection of materials

In order to make a wooden frame with your own hands, the necessary wood is selected. Basically you need to look at the pattern and structure of the tree, since, in principle, any species is suitable for this. If the frame will be painted later, then the simplest one is chosen - pine or spruce. If the structure of the wood is visible and the product is subsequently coated with varnish or stain, then you need to take wood with an original pattern. Walnut, ash, cherry, and linden look very beautiful.

Beautiful frames for paintings with your own hands made of wood are created when carvings are applied to them (floral, plot or simple ornament). For carving, use softer wood, especially if the carver is a beginner. A professional, of course, will make a pattern on an oak board, but for a beginner it will be difficult, since oak is considered a very hard tree. You will also have to buy a set of cutters of different sizes.

Another option for making a frame with your own hands from wood is to simply wooden product, which is decorated with improvised materials on top. Nowadays, picture frames decorated with something unusual are fashionable. These can be pieces of bark, pencils, shells, buttons and other waste material.

Making a frame with your own hands from wood

Before making a wooden picture frame, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:

  • plywood or fiberboard;
  • wooden slats, baseboard or baguette;
  • hand saw or jigsaw;
  • miter box;
  • construction stapler;

  • PVA glue;
  • acrylic varnish or paint, brushes;
  • stain (if necessary);
  • plastic or metal loop;
  • nails or screws;
  • hammer or screwdriver (as a last resort - a screwdriver);
  • corner clamps;
  • sandpaper.

When planning to cover a picture frame with something (it’s easy to make one from wood with your own hands), prepare the material that is needed for this. You can lay out the required pattern on the table in advance to understand how it will look.

Step-by-step instruction

The first step is to measure the size of the painting and cut out a square or rectangle from plywood or fiberboard. Its size should be larger than the picture by the width of the wooden slats. After attaching a painting or photograph to the plywood, outline it with a pencil so as not to stain the object while working. The painting can then be put aside until the work is completed.

The second step in making a frame with your own hands from wood will be cutting the slats at an angle of 45 degrees. To do this you will need a saw and a miter box. A strip or block of wood is inserted into the miter box and sawed off along the line. Then we repeat the procedure with another bar. We combine the corners of two pieces of wood, you should get a right angle of 90 degrees. We apply this angle to the plywood and mark the length of the other sides. After this, using the marked marks, we make cuts in the other two corners. We attach the assembled frame to the plywood and check its size. If everything comes together clearly, you can proceed to the next stage.

The ends of the slats, cut at 45 degrees, are coated with PVA glue and pulled together tightly and left alone until completely glued (approximately 2 hours). After this, for better fastening, connect the corners of the slats with staples using a construction stapler.

Assembling a wooden frame

The last stage of making the frame will be fastening the parts together. There is a small nuance here. If you are attaching a painting or photograph permanently, you can glue it to plywood. Then everything is much simpler. The finished frame just needs to be nailed to the plywood or fastened with small screws. If the photo is inserted, then you will have to work extra hard.

In order for the photo to fit freely into the frame, you must leave a gap between the frame and the photo. In a purchased frame, wooden slats are processed to milling machine and a step is made for insertion. Not everyone has a router at home, so you need to do it differently. Make an additional layer between the frame and the plywood, for example from thick cardboard. Strips are cut to size corresponding to the width of the frame and glued along the perimeter of the plywood on three sides. There is no need to do this from above. A painting or photograph will be inserted into that slot.

Next, clean the surface with sandpaper and cover with a layer of varnish or paint. After drying, repeat the cleaning procedure and cover with another layer. Let dry. Acrylic varnish dries quickly and produces almost no unpleasant odors.

It doesn't take long to make a picture frame with your own hands from wood. All that remains is to attach a loop and hang it on the wall. The only thing I can recommend is to laminate the photograph so that you can periodically wipe off dust without damaging the photograph itself.

Variety of materials

You can create frames with your own hands from wood and metal, baguettes and plastic, polyurethane skirting boards and simple branches. Nowadays there is such a free approach to the choice of materials that any flight of fancy can be realized. The frames are roughly knocked down with large nails, tied together from randomly sized branches, and burned blowtorch, peel off with a stiff brush. Everyone has their own approach. Whoever thinks of something will realize it in his work. Nowadays there are so many various materials and examples of other designers that you can, after looking at the photographs, choose the one that suits you.

Designer frame for mirror

Frames can be made not only from slats or bars. Let's consider several options for unusual frames. For example, how to make a frame for a mirror out of wood with your own hands using small twigs? To do this, we take plywood and cut out a figure several centimeters larger in diameter than the mirror.

If, for example, it is round, then a larger circle is drawn, etc. Then the mirror itself is glued to the center of the plywood circle using liquid nails. A strip of plywood remains along the edges, which we will decorate. To do this, take wood glue and, in turn, coat each branch with glue and place it in a circle with the end in the middle. The work is meticulous and long, but the result will be a completely original thing.

Frame of twigs

Let's look at another example of an original photo frame. Anyone can make it from wood with their own hands. A photograph is glued to a sheet of plywood and a few centimeters of margin are left to the edges to decorate the frame. Branches of one or different lengths, thoroughly dried and treated with an antiseptic.

After this you can cover them acrylic varnish, or you can leave them untouched. Take a beautiful twine and make four bundles from an equal number of branches. The bundles are tightly connected to each other. The result is a frame of twigs, which is then glued to the free part of the plywood sheet.

Come up with your own version, create, search, try, and everything will work out! Good luck!
