How to connect a cast-iron sewer pipe with a plastic one - options and examples. How to connect a cast iron sewer pipe with a plastic one How to connect a pvc pipe with a cast iron one

This is not an uncommon situation when it is necessary to connect a new plastic sewer pipe to an old cast iron system. Therefore, the methods of docking "plastic-cast iron" have been developed. There are also special rubber cuffs of standard diameters on sale, designed to switch from plastic to cast iron.

But before considering possible situations and methods of docking, you need to pay attention to the main thing.

The sewer pipeline cannot narrow in the direction of fluid flow. Protrusions, burrs, etc. are not allowed in the sewer pipeline. Such places during operation will quickly become clogged.

Therefore, if the movement of the liquid is directed from a plastic pipe to a cast iron pipe, then, accordingly, the plastic pipe should be inserted inside the cast iron pipe, and not vice versa. In this case, there will be no constriction at the junction in the direction of fluid movement.

The installation itself will always be carried out according to the same scheme: either a plastic pipe must insert a cast-iron pipe, or vice versa.

Let's consider several possible situations.

There is a cast-iron socket to which you need to connect a plastic pipe.

If the socket of the cast-iron pipe remains intact, then to connect a plastic pipe of a smaller diameter to it, you need to use a special rubber cuff (sold). This is the simplest type of connection.

The procedure for connecting a plastic pipe to a cast-iron socket is as follows:
- a cuff of the desired diameter is purchased (the socket of cast-iron pipes is standard, - usually it is 100 or 50 mm)
- the cast-iron socket is cleaned and dried.
- a special sanitary silicone with a thin layer (sold) is applied to the socket along the diameter so that it tightly fills all the flaws and recesses. Silicone is also applied to outside rubber seal.
- the cuff is inserted into the socket;
- a plastic tube is inserted into the cuff.

It is advisable to let the silicone dry a little (2 hours) before filling the pipeline.

There is no socket - there is just a cut-off cast-iron pipe.
You can do the following - the cast iron will be inserted into the plastic. To do this, it is best to use a plastic adapter pipe larger than that of a cast-iron pipe in diameter, as well as a cuff for it.

Then the work is performed in the following order.
- the cast-iron pipe is cleaned and dried;
- the cast-iron pipe is covered with a thin layer of sealant at the junction;
- on top of cast iron pipe a rubber cuff is put on (sold according to pipe diameters);
- a plastic tube is put on the cuff.

In the future, pipes can already be joined to this adapter in the standard way. It is only important to remember the need not to create obstacles inside the pipe. Therefore, this method of docking may not always be suitable.

You can join cast iron and plastic pipes and other methods.
Feel free to experiment. It is only important that the connection be securely sealed, and that the docking would not separate over time. To seal the joint can be used:
- epoxy adhesive,
- layer sanitary sealant,
cement-sand (1:1) or cement-asbestos (1:2) mortar, as well as cement-sand mortar with the addition of PVA glue.
- hemp winding in combination with cement mortar,
— modern sealing self-adhesive tapes.

An example of actions for joining pipelines.
- the inserted part of the plastic pipe is tightly wrapped with a hair winding for 2/3 of the length of the inserted part;
- a plastic pipe with a winding is inserted into a cast iron pipe;
- with a thin tool, the winding is compacted at the junction;
- along the contour, a cement-sand mortar is added to the joint with the addition of PVA glue.
This compound is allowed to dry for at least 24 hours.

If the main element that your new sewer will consist of is a plastic pipe, the cast iron pipe must be removed. Or at least cut it down as much as possible.

Why change

Soviet plumbing was uncomplicated and monotonous. A tiny toilet with a cast-iron riser in the corner, a bathroom next to it, another riser in the kitchen, that's it. But times change, new ideas in planning appear, new plumbing and new requirements for it.

All currently produced plumbing fixtures are unified and adapted for attaching plastic pipes to them. Their design does not provide for the use of cast iron sewer pipes. Plastic has a lot of advantages. It is much lighter than cast iron, easy to install and much more economical than a steel or cast iron pipe..

Plastic pipes are sold in various lengths, with ready-made branches and corners. Each of them has a socket for tight and reliable entry of one pipe into another. All this allows you to collect all sewer system in just a few minutes. Thanks to this simplicity, it is possible to put other plumbing, while slightly changing its location. But there is one problem that cannot be avoided. Through the whole multi-storey building a common cast-iron riser is installed from top to bottom. And there is a need to make the transition from cast iron to plastic.

How to go

How to connect cast iron sewer pipe with plastic, while ensuring the reliability of the connection? This can be done in several ways.

The simplest is the connection through a rubber adapter. The size of the pipes is standard, and therefore this transition provides that a plastic pipe will be tightly inserted into it, and it will hermetically enter the cast iron one. Connect your sewer system to the common house in this way quickly and reliably. Unfortunately, this is not always possible.

It is possible to connect a cast-iron pipe with a plastic one using one adapter only when its seat is in perfect condition smooth, no cracks or chips.

And this does not always happen. Pipe joints burst from time to time, covered with cracks.

Chasing with winding

It may happen that the diameters of the pipes to be joined do not match each other, or the condition of the inner surface of the socket of the cast-iron pipe does not allow the use of such a method. In this case, they use the good old "chasing" method, with the help of which they used to connect cast-iron pipes. This will require sanitary linen winding.

The joints are prepared as follows: the inside of the cast-iron pipe is carefully cleaned, and the end of the plastic pipe is wrapped with several layers of winding. Then we insert one pipe into another. What happened is a weak and unreliable connection.

It needs to be sealed. The winding is folded into a kind of bundle or rope, which is pushed in a circle with a thin spatula into the gap between the pipes. The joints are clogged to about 2/3 of the depth, while trying to ensure the maximum packing density. The remaining space is filled with a mixture of cement, glue and water.

Difference from old methods

AT Soviet times before connecting the cast-iron pipe, the sulfur mass was heated and the cracks were filled with it. But this is very dangerous for health, so more civilized methods are now being used.

It will not be possible to immediately connect the resulting connection to work, you will have to wait for the cement to harden, but the joint made using this technology is strong, reliable and simple.

Very often, at present, even winding is not used to resolve the issue of how to connect a plastic pipe to a cast iron pipe. Hardware stores abound different kind sealants. This is silicone, which qualitatively fills the free space of the joint, reliably sticking to the walls. At the same time, it does not harden completely, remaining moderately plastic. Due to this, the joint is insensitive to vibration and slight bending loads.

Connect pipes from different materials Maybe. Sometimes this is done quickly, sometimes you have to tinker, but this work is quite within the power of any masterful owner. Therefore, if you have new ideas for the placement of plumbing, then you should not be stopped by the lack of a sewer outlet near your chosen place. This is a solvable problem. You simply make the transition from cast iron to plastic and make the wiring you need.

Cast iron pipes in the sewer system are rarely used today. But if you decide to use them, then you should know the method of their connection. That is what this article will be about. We will also talk about how to connect cast iron pipes with other materials, what devices can be used and how to seal the joints.

Connection of cast iron pipes with sockets

The process of connecting cast iron pipes will depend on their type. As a rule, for the installation of sewerage systems, structures with a socket at one end are used. In this case, the connection process will consist of the following steps:

  • The first step is to clean the socket itself and the smooth end of the cast-iron pipe from debris and dirt. Also check for foreign objects in the pipe itself.
  • The smooth end of the cast-iron pipe is inserted into the socket of the previous one.
  • Then the so-called minting of tow is carried out. This will provide improved sealing at the junction. For this procedure, tow, a special stick and a hammer are used. The wound tow is hammered into the socket. At the same time, try not to overdo it, if the material gets inside the pipe, it can cause a blockage. Minting occurs until the bell is two-thirds full.
  • The next step is to fill the remaining socket space with cement mortar. This is guaranteed to prevent leaks from appearing. To do this, you can use cement grades 300 or 400. It is diluted with water (in proportions of 9 parts of cement to 1 water), and the resulting solution is poured into the socket. To prevent cracks from appearing on the surface during drying, cover the pouring place with a wet rag. For such work, you can use modern materials. For example, great fit bituminous mastic and silicone sealant.

Smooth pipe connection

In addition to cast-iron pipes with a socket, smooth structures are also used in the creation of piping systems. They are used to connect various fixtures. Among them there are couplings, saddles, crosses, bends, etc. Which one to use will depend on the diameter of the pipe and the type of connection.

The most common fitting is the coupling. It comes in three main types:

  • If pipes of the same diameter are connected, then a sleeve in the form of a cylinder is used. Inside such a fitting there is a thread.
  • To connect pipes with different diameters, a device in the form of two cylinders is used. This coupling is also equipped with an internal thread.
  • The heating system uses a futorka. Such a coupling is still the same cylinder, only with a thread, both on the inner and on the outer surface.

The connection process using a coupling is quite simple. First you need to mark them to see how much each pipe should go into the coupling (it is necessary to calculate so that the ends connect exactly in the middle). Then both pipes are simply inserted into the coupling. For sealing, you can use a special sealant.

But the pipeline may run at an angle or include branches. There are other devices for this. For example, the connection of cast-iron sewer pipes at an angle is carried out using bends. They are a piece of pipe bent at a certain angle (10, 15, 30, 60 and 90 degrees).

In addition, there are other devices for connecting pipes. For example:

  • Tee. With it, you can connect three pipes at once in single system. As a rule, such a connection is necessary at the branching of the sewerage system.
  • Cross. A design that helps connect four pipes at once.
  • Saddle. Such a device allows you to connect a smaller diameter pipe to the main line (for example, from a separate plumbing fixture).

All these devices can have sockets or straight sections at the ends. To seal the connection, various sealants or tow are used.

Combining cast iron and plastic

If you decide to change the sewer system using modern materials, then you may have a question - how to connect a plastic pipe with a cast iron one? Many home craftsmen simply insert one into the other and seal the joint with cement mortar. In this case, the plastic can be deformed and a leak will appear.

The junction of the cast-iron pipe and plastic products must be done very carefully. The fact is that when heated, these materials expand in different ways. As a result, the seal will be broken and leakage becomes inevitable. Also, the appearance of a leak can be affected by mechanical influences (for example, constant vibration or shock).

There are two ways to properly connect pipes made of plastic and cast iron. The choice will depend on the presence of the bell. If it is, then the first step is to visit the store. Here you need to purchase a special adapter that will be installed in the socket. It comes with a standard diameter for sewer pipes (usually 50 and 110 mm), but you can also find a non-standard option (if you need it). Therefore, before buying, check this value.

Now you need to clean the socket of the cast-iron pipe from rust and dirt. The purchased adapter is inserted into the pipe. The bell itself and plastic element it is better to lubricate with a sealant (for example, silicone). Make sure it goes in completely. Then a plastic pipe is inserted into the adapter. This completes the connection. This method is quick and easy, and the connection is reliable. In addition, it is easy to dismantle for cleaning. When installing, do not forget about the slope, it should be towards the riser.

If there is no socket on the cast-iron pipe, then two adapters of the required diameter must be used for the connection. First of all, we clean the ends of rust and dirt. Then a rubber adapter is put on the cast-iron pipe, and a plastic one is put on it. The plastic sewer pipe will be inserted into the latter. Coat all joints with silicone (or other suitable) sealant. This will prevent leakage and bad smell. The connection using two adapters, like the previous one, can be easily disassembled for repairs.

If your toilet is drained from old cast iron pipes, then when buying a new toilet, find out how to connect it. Everything here will depend on the direction of the toilet outlet (that part of the structure from where the drains enter the sewer system).

If your sewer has not changed since the day the house was built, then the pipe may stick out of the floor, at a decent distance from the wall (unless it is a common riser going to the upper floors). For this case, you need to buy a toilet with a vertical outlet (at the bottom of the structure). The vertical outlet toilet is very easy to connect, just insert it into the socket of the pipe.

A toilet with a horizontal outlet is also connected. Such designs can often be found on imported products. To connect such a toilet, you need to insert the outlet into the socket. The place of docking is best sealed with sealant or tow. So, you will not allow leakage and prevent the appearance of an unpleasant odor.

The variant with an oblique release is more common. To connect such a toilet to a cast-iron pipe, you can use a tap with the desired angle. It is inserted into the pipe, and the toilet outlet is connected to the outlet. The connection point is also desirable to be sealed.

But with all these connection options, it is necessary to connect the toilet directly to the pipe. This does not allow you to install a plumbing device in a place convenient for you. The installation location will depend on the location of the sewer pipe. That is why a special device, a corrugation, is used to connect the toilet bowl to the sewerage system.

The plastic corrugation is easily put on the toilet outlet (if it is oblique or horizontal), and the other end is inserted into the socket of the pipe. This method allows you to install plumbing in any place convenient for you. The corrugation is easy to stretch to the desired distance and rotate in any plane and at any angle. In this case, the junction can not be sealed. The corrugation is equipped with a rubber nozzle, which fits tightly into the socket of the pipe and does not allow moisture and odors to seep through.

Video

If your apartment has a cast-iron sewer, and you need to make the transition from cast iron to plastic, then after watching this video you can understand how to do this job correctly.

When replacing an old sewer, it may be necessary to connect a plastic pipe with a cast iron one. It is desirable that such work be carried out by specialists, but if you wish, you can do everything yourself.

So that after replacing the pipeline there are no leaks or blockages, it is necessary to qualitatively connect the plastic pipes with cast iron. In this article, we will figure out how to properly connect a cast-iron pipe with a plastic one.

All work can be divided into several stages:

  1. preparation;
  2. dismantling of cast iron pipes;
  3. plastic installation;
  4. compound.

Preparatory work

The first step is to carefully measure the area to be replaced in order to know the number of pipes and what diameter to buy. The diameter is also an important aspect, for example, when replacing, pipes with a diameter of 50 mm are used, and with or a section coming from the toilet -. In addition, you will also need to purchase a certain amount of adapters, corners and other fittings.

Before starting work, prepare the material and tools:

  • plastic pipe of the desired diameter;
  • a coupling with which the transition from cast iron to plastic will be carried out;
  • wooden or rubber mallet;
  • grinder or hacksaw for metal.

It is desirable to have time to replace the sewer pipeline in 1 day.

Removal of cast iron pipes

The pipes are connected using press fittings. At one end of such a product there is a thread, and at the other - a socket for connecting plastic pipe. You will also need a Teflon tape (FUM tape) or plumbing linen for sealing and two adjustable wrenches.

Installation steps:

  • We unscrew the coupling or cut off a piece from the cast-iron pipe in the place where it will be carried out
  • connection with plastic pipe.
  • We cut the thread, if necessary, on the cut off section.
  • We clean the thread from dust and wind tape or linen on it, lubricate it with silicone grease.
  • Screw on the press fitting.

Advice!

Screw the press fitting by hand, without a key, as it may crack with strong force. It will be possible to tighten it after turning on the water.

You can also connect a cast-iron pipe with a plastic one using a cast fitting. For this:

  1. We degrease the place of docking.
  2. We process the joint with glue for plastic and sprinkle with sand, wait for the glue to dry completely.
  3. The socket is cleaned and degreased.
  4. We process with sealant.
  5. Install the sealing ring.
  6. We insert the narrow part of the fitting into the sealing ring.
  7. We insert the edge of the plastic pipe into the fitting cuff.

Connection with rubber gaskets

This method is suitable if you managed to remove the old pipe from and its edge and inner surface remained equal. The pipe should enter an average of 5 cm into the socket. With this method of connection, it will be possible to use the sewer immediately after all work is completed. Installation steps:

  • we clean parts from rust, dirt, etc.;
  • coat the rubber adapter with sealant from the outside.
  • we insert the rubber adapter into the cast-iron socket;
  • insert the tube into the cuff.

If pipes that do not have a socket are connected, then a plastic adapter is used. Then proceed as follows:

  • cut off a piece, align the edges;
  • put on a rubber adapter;
  • coat the edge with sealant;
  • on top we put on a plastic adapter lubricated with sealant.

Silicone sealing

The gap formed when connecting pipes (up to 2 mm) can be sealed with sanitary silicone. This method is quite effective if Special attention give the bottom of the joint.

  1. Dry the joint with a building hair dryer.
  2. We fill the gap with silicone as deep as possible, for this we use a special construction pistol for glue.
  3. We wait until the silicone dries, usually it takes 3-5 hours.

Socket connection

For this type of connection, you need to buy a special adapter that is designed to be installed in the socket. This item can be purchased at any hardware store, products with a diameter of 50 or 110 mm are usually required. But there are pipes of a different diameter, so it is better to decide in advance on.

The connection process takes place in several stages:

  • we clean all connected parts from dirt, dust and other things;
  • we coat them with sealant;
  • we insert the adapter, all the way, into the cast-iron socket;
  • insert a plastic pipe into the adapter.

This method is the easiest and most reliable, and if necessary, the connection can be disassembled and reassembled.

flange connection

With this method, special connecting parts are used. In addition, the use of welding will be required, which does not always allow you to carry out the work yourself.

  1. We clean the pipe adjacent to the main pipe.
  2. We weld the metal flange part.
  3. We throw a crimp sleeve on the workpiece.
  4. We connect the flange parts by placing an o-ring between them with bolts.

It is possible to carry out high-quality work in the event of a repair or a planned replacement of cast iron pipes with plastic pipes only by observing the installation steps. I would also like to note that it is better to carry out these works in advance, and not to wait for an accident.

Video: transition from cast iron to plastic pipe, nuances and tricks in replacing plumbing, PVC pipes and sewers

Hello! Today I will tell you how to make the transition from a cast-iron pipe to a plastic one.

This article will help you to independently mint a cast-iron sewer for repairs. After that, it will be possible to install a plastic pipe into the cast-iron socket.

What are the difficulties in this task:

  1. According to the diameter standard, the cast-iron pipe is larger than the plastic one.
  2. It is impossible to disassemble the connection without knowledge of the materiel. The joints look like a single whole.
  3. The cast-iron pipe breaks easily, with a hammer it is necessary to work extremely carefully.
  4. The cast-iron bell is minted with sulfur or cement. With different coins - different way dismantling.
  5. When chasing gray, you will need a burner and a gas mask.

Diameter standards

Let's analyze the situation, using the example of a cast-iron sewer tee in a bathroom. node

The fact is that it is this tee that changes most often during repairs, even if it is serviceable. It takes up much more space than plastic. And this is important, because with a plastic tee, the toilet can be installed closer to the wall and further from the door. Well, that is, sitting on the toilet, you can read the encyclopedia.

Tool

The minimum we need:

  1. Plastic cuff
  2. sealant
  3. Lubricant
  4. A hammer
  5. Flat screwdriver
  6. In the case of sulfur, burner and gas mask

Step 1. Chasing

The method of caulking a cast-iron pipe depends on how it is assembled:

  1. for cement
  2. or to "sulfur"

1. Cement

You need to take a small chisel or a flat screwdriver and gradually, slowly, beat off a small piece of cement. We put a screwdriver in a place between the pipe and the socket. We beat in a circle.

Under the cement - a cable. Kabolka is such a strand of flax soaked in oil, which prevents the flax from rotting. We pick out the cable as much as possible.

After that, we try to stir the pipe. In the case of a tee, it is quite simple to stir it up: we insert some kind of lever into the branch of the tee: a bar or a long key. If the tee is not moving yet, then we knock out the cement further. Don't take a big lever to break by force. There is a high probability of breaking the socket into which they were going to mount a new pipe. Be careful. The work is painstaking and does not tolerate haste.

2. Sulfur

Attention: fire. To begin with, it is necessary to ensure complete fire safety. You will work with open fire, remove everything around that can catch fire. Prepare some water in case you set fire to something. Air. Ensure that the room is fully ventilated. Whether it's winter or summer heat, open the window and door so that there is a draft. Otherwise, there will be nothing to breathe. I recommend wearing a gas mask or at least a charcoal respirator.
I suppose that you can heat the bell with a building hair dryer. The melting point of sulfur is approximately 450 °C.

After ventilation is provided and Fire safety, turn on the burner and begin to heat the bell evenly. I highly do not recommend putting the burner in one place and leaving. With uneven heating, the cast-iron socket may burst. At least I try to avoid such experiments.

It is not necessary to wait until the sulfur flows out. It is enough just to soften it with heat. Insert a lever into the branch of the tee and move the tee. As soon as it moves, turn off the burner and, shaking it back and forth, move it to the side.

In the case of cement embossing, the same thing: as soon as the tee has moved, start loosening it.

Before finally removing the tee, immediately prepare a rag or other plug for the pipe. Water can be drained from above, and there is no need to breathe the smell of sewage.

Step 2. Clean and install the cuff

After we have minted the cast-iron pipe and removed the old section, we must take care of the cleanliness of the socket.

We clean and wipe it dry so that there are no tubercles left.

Then we coat the cast-iron socket with sealant and insert the cuff (sealant is not always needed).

I throw the cuffs into the mountains for about 30 seconds. they become soft and easier to put them on!

I've been waiting vitalix1974, in the comments on YouTube

On the inner part cuffs are lubricated.

Step 3. Insert the plastic pipe

And now it remains only to insert the plastic pipe into the cuff.

It happens that the pipe does not want to go into the cuff,

in this case, you can lightly tap on the plastic socket to drive the pipe into our cuff. Use plank or plywood to distribute the load by tapping with a hammer. Don't knock straight on plastic pipe. It can be broken that way.

Good luck with your transitions!
