Many interesting signs and traditions are associated with the walnut spas. Why is the nut spas called the third and bread

Nut (Khlebny) Savior - a folk holiday, which is celebrated on August 29, the day after the feast of the Assumption Holy Mother of God- this is the last, third festival of the outgoing summer, which symbolizes the end of the harvest.

The Orthodox Church on this day celebrates the transfer from Edessa to Constantinople of the Image of Jesus Christ Not Made by Hands. On the same day, the church celebrates the icons of the Most Holy Theotokos Fedorovskaya and Port Arthur.

What a holiday

Nut Savior, like the first two - Honey and Apple, is an ancient holiday that united all Christian and folk traditions, therefore, the third Savior was considered a day of thanksgiving to the Lord for the harvest of bread and nuts.

The third Savior is called Orekhovy because from that day you can eat nuts after being consecrated in the church. It is not as popular as the previous two, but of the three, it is the most important.

The name of the holiday "Spas" was formed as an abbreviation for "Savior". Each Savior has its own history and traditions, but they are all connected with Jesus Christ and his deeds.

Another name for the Third Savior is Savior on Canvases, or Canvas Savior, which is rooted in the Christian tradition.

Savior Not Made by Hands

According to Tradition, the Savior was called Not Made by Hands because of a miracle that happened during the life of Jesus Christ. The ruler of the Syrian city of Edessa, Abgar, who was stricken with leprosy, not seeing Jesus, believed in Him as the Son of God and wrote a letter asking him to come and heal him.

With a letter to Palestine, he sent his painter Ananias, instructing him to paint a picture of the Divine Teacher if He could not come.

Upon arrival in Palestine, Ananias saw the Son of God surrounded by a large number of people, but there was no way to approach him. Therefore, the artist stood in the distance on a high stone and tried to paint a portrait of Christ, but nothing came of it.

Jesus noticed the painter and calling him by name, called him over and gave a letter to Abgar. The Savior promised the ruler of the Syrian city to send his disciple soon so that he would heal the sick and instruct in the true faith.

Then Jesus asked the people to bring water and a towel (ubruz), washed his face and wiped it off with ubruz, on which His Divine Face was manifested. Ananias brought Ubrus and the Savior's letter to Edessa - Abgar received the shrine with reverence and received healing.

Icon "Savior Not Made by Hands"

Before the arrival of the disciple promised by the Lord, only a small part of the traces of a terrible disease remained on his face. It was the apostle of the 70 Saint Thaddeus, who preached the Gospel and baptized Abgar, who believed, and all the inhabitants of Edessa.

The image became very revered in Edessa. The plate was nailed to a board and placed above the city gates - the inhabitants of the city considered it a great shrine.

In 630, the Arabs conquered Edessa, but they did not interfere with the worship of the Image Not Made by Hands, the fame of which spread throughout the East.

The image not made by hands became the main shrine of the city of Edessa, staying in it until 944 - Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus (912-959) bought the Image from the emir, the ruler of the city and transferred it to Constantinople, the then capital of Orthodoxy. Since then, this event has been celebrated by Orthodox Christians around the world.

However, during the time of the Crusades, the Image was irretrievably lost, and today we have the opportunity to attach ourselves to copies of this image in Orthodox churches.

Traditions and customs

On this day, according to tradition, they finished harvesting bread and baked the first loaf of flour from the new harvest. Bread was consecrated in church and then ate with the whole family, therefore the Third Savior was also called Bread.

In the old days, there were such proverbs: "The Third Savior - there is bread in store", "If the Third Savior is good, there will be kvass in winter."

The rite of keeping the remains of the first loaf, wrapped in a canvas cloth behind the icon, has been preserved in some villages to this day. People believed that in this way they lured well-being into the house and protected the family from hunger.

In many cities and villages, fairs were organized on the Khlebny or Orekhovy Spas - it was believed that trade on this day would be especially favorable.

At the fairs one could find an abundance of various fabrics, which the villagers willingly came for, since the people were of the opinion that on this day something needed to be purchased from fabrics.

It was not customary to celebrate the Khlebny (Nut) Savior in any special way, since at that time the suffering was in full swing, and people had no time for entertainment. In the morning they attended church, sanctified nuts, bread, grains and set off to prepare the cornfield for winter crops.

The festive table was supposed to be rich and varied - the Dormition fast ended on the eve of the holiday, so it was possible to serve fish and meat dishes... According to tradition, it was necessary to try all the dishes in order for the next year to be joyful and fat.

On this day, it was customary to give symbolic gifts to relatives, friends and colleagues - nuts, baked buns, or canvas towels, since fabric products are also directly related to this holiday.

The hostesses on this day were also engaged in the preparation of medicinal nut liqueur. For this, membranes were used. walnuts, which were poured with cognac or vodka and insisted in a dark place.

Such a nut tincture in cold winter was the primary treatment for colds - it was added to hot tea.

With the arrival of the Nut Savior, autumn fully comes into its own - according to popular beliefs, thunderous August foreshadows a long warm autumn. The last swallows fly off to Orekhovy Spas, and if the cranes fly off by August 29, the winter will be early.

The material was prepared on the basis of open sources

August is rich in harvest holidays. The most significant gifts of Russian nature are honored three times: apples, honey and nuts. Although, strictly speaking, during the Three Spas, attention is paid not only to these products ..

Honey Savior

Honey Savior is celebrated on August 14 in a new style. Our ancestors believed that after this day the bees begin to bring the "wrong" honey, and therefore they were in a hurry to collect the last gifts of little workers. This honey was considered especially healing, and it was used for food only after consecration in the church.

On the day of the First Savior, it is customary to give each other jars with this fragrant delicacy, bake honey cakes and gingerbread, and cook mead. Believers come to the temple to consecrate honey - both liquid and honeycomb. They leave honey offerings in the church, present them to the elderly, children and those who ask for alms. There is even an old saying in Russia: "On the First Savior, the beggar will eat honey."

In addition, on August 14, the priests also conduct a small blessing of water. It was the tradition to consecrate water, pre-dug wells and surrounding water bodies that gave the second name to this holiday: "Wet Savior" or "Savior on the Water".

It is believed that even dew on this day is healing, so that any contact with fluids of natural origin gives health, physical and mental strength, washes away sins, accumulated fatigue and negative energy. In addition, Wet Spas is the last opportunity to swim in a river or lake. After this day, the water blooms and becomes cold.

If you have a well, a spring or at least an artesian well in your country house or near your house, take some water, eat a spoonful of honey and drink it down in three small sips. pure water- it will give you a great boost of vivacity. Just remember that you can only afford such a ritual on Honey Spas. The fact is that usually honey in combination with ice water causes a rise in temperature and provokes a fever.

The "hero" of the Honey Savior, in addition to the actual honey, is the poppy. The third "name" of this holiday is Makovei. We will not go into details of the historical origin. of this name, but let's just say that along with the gifts of bees, poppy heads are also consecrated on this day. Just by this time, the poppy ripens finally. Therefore on festive table they also put dishes in which it is used: poppy rolls, poppy boiled in honey, buns, as well as salads, first and second courses, for example, sochivo (wheat porridge with raisins, honey, walnuts and poppy seeds).

How and when to celebrate three Savior: Honey, Apple, Nut

If you are going to celebrate the Savior of Honey, focusing on the Christian tradition, then remember that August 14 is the first day of the Assumption Lent, therefore meat and fish dishes are not used, and the baking is made from lean dough.

You can protect your home from an evil invasion, from the evil eye and from damage, from quarrels between households and from starvation by scattering consecrated poppy seeds in the corners of the house.

Apple Spas

The next celebration of the gifts of nature is the Apple Savior, which is celebrated on August 19 in a new style. According to the Orthodox canon, the Savior coincides with the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, and according to the popular calendar, with the farewell to summer. By tradition, until this day, apples and dishes from them are not eaten. Some time ago, it was even believed that if parents violated this prohibition, then their children, once in heaven, would be deprived of all sorts of delicacies.

How and when to celebrate three Savior: Honey, Apple, Nut

So our ancestors waited until the Second Savior and only on that day, early in the morning, almost at dawn, did they start picking apples or buying them. Then they were taken to the church for consecration, after which they arranged a "feast by the mountain." In addition to apples, pears and grapes are consecrated on August 19 and are also served on the festive table raw and cooked.

Lenten dishes are prepared for the holiday - apple pies, compotes, jams, charlottes, as well as apples baked with honey and spices, pears in syrup, etc. Fish is also allowed. However, if you are a non-religious person, then you can supplement the menu with duck or chicken with apples, meat in apple-lingonberry sauce, baked apples with soft cheese (or cottage cheese), salad of cheese, grapes and ham.

V Apple Spas it is customary to treat everyone with apples, even strangers... The priority is children and beggars standing on the porch. Moreover, first the fruits are distributed to others and only then they begin to eat.

Together with apples, you can give your relatives and friends pictures or textiles depicting these fruits or souvenir apples made of wood, metal, salt dough. Apples are a symbol of fertility and family well-being, therefore, with your offering, you wish those who are dear to you all the best.

If you are going to celebrate this Savior, then remember that, in addition to treats and gifts, the celebration also includes evening walks. Head to the park at sunset for summer and fall. It is desirable that you can watch the sun go down - this tradition carries a deep sacred meaning.

Watching the luminary hiding behind the horizon with your eyes, you thank nature for its gifts, for abundance, and ask that the next twelve months be blessed, generous and well-fed, while our ancestors also sang; you, too, can perform some suitable song or simply turn to the sun with a monologue.

In addition, according to legends, the last piece of the first apple eaten after consecration brings good luck - it is carefully chewed, making a wish. It is believed that it will definitely come true.

Nut Spas

The Third Savior is not as popular as the previous two, but of the three, it is the most important. The Nut Spas is celebrated on August 29 in a new style. By this day, nuts ripen, they begin to actively collect and eat. However, the first collection of nuts is also consecrated in the church.

How and when to celebrate three Savior: Honey, Apple, Nut

Despite the fact that many call this Spas Orekhov, its main name is Khlebny. By tradition, on this day, the harvesting of bread ends and the first loaf of flour from the new harvest is baked. The bread is taken to the temple for consecration, and then eaten by the whole family. In some regions of our country, a ritual still exists - the remains of the first rugs are wrapped in a linen cloth and placed behind the icon. Thus, they "lure" well-being into the house, protect the family from hunger.

It is not customary to celebrate Khlebny (Nut) Savior in any special way, since at that time the suffering was in full swing, and our ancestors had no time for entertainment. In the morning they attended church, sanctified nuts, bread, grains and set off to prepare the cornfield for winter crops. Nevertheless, some holiday customs were nevertheless observed - they baked bread for the poor, treated relatives and passers-by to nuts, served pies with nuts and other gifts of the outgoing summer for dinner.

You don't have to limit yourself in celebrating the Nut Savior. By this time, the fast will have ended, and even if you observed it, on this day the choice of the menu depends only on your imagination. Bake bread by original recipe, prepare meals that use nuts, such as lobio or chicken salad, with mushrooms, nuts, and cheese.

For entertainment, choose a fortune-telling on nuts - make a wish and crack one nut. If the kernel turns out to be good, sweet and large, then your dream will come true. If the nut is empty or black inside, then the enigma will not come true.

In addition, present symbolic gifts to relatives, friends and colleagues: nuts, baked buns, or canvas towels - fabric products are also directly related to this holiday.

The Transfer of the Image of Christ the Savior Not Made by Hands took place on August 16 according to the old style (on August 29 - according to the new). Since then, this event has been celebrated by Orthodox Christians all over the world, and in Russia it coincides with the pagan, folk festival of bread and nuts. In memory of the canvas with the revealed image of Jesus Christ, it was customary to trade in fabrics that day.

The Three Savior is a great occasion to enjoy what has ripened in forests, gardens and fields. It is believed that these days all the positive energy of the earth is concentrated in fruits, nuts, honey and bread. And seemingly ordinary products become a powerful charge that helps to gain health, luck and well-being. What we wish you!

Which religion is right for you?

August is not only considered the main month of summer, in which almost all vegetables and fruits ripen, but is also the most important from a church point of view. This month, the Orthodox observe which is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. There are several posts, but this one is special. It is one of the many days, especially revered and ends with the celebration of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos. Unfortunately, in our time, church traditions have lost their great importance, not everyone goes to church and fast. Today, not everyone remembers, for example, what date. In this article we will deal with all the features of the three holidays.

Dormition fasting: father of three

The Dormition Fast is observed from 14 to 27 August according to the new style. At this time, many of the strictest prohibitions are imposed, which believers must necessarily observe. So, it is forbidden to eat everything except bread, vegetables and fruits on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday, the church allows you to eat hot dishes, but without the addition of vegetable oil, and only on Saturday and Sunday is it allowed to eat food flavored vegetable oil... In addition to food restrictions, lay people should refrain from carnal pleasures, scandals, deception, lies. During fasting, spiritual restrictions are more important than "everyday" ones. Do you want to know other features of the Dormition Lent, what date is the Nut Savior or Honey Savior?

Sweet post - sweet holidays

Despite the severity of the Dormition Fast, it has one remarkable feature: it is at this time that the harvest is harvested and tribute is paid to three, if not the main, then important gifts of nature - honey, apples, nuts. The ancestors gave each of the food special meaning, it was believed that this is how Mother Nature herself gives people her grace and strength. Our churched great-grandmothers celebrated 3 holidays - 3 Savior. These were also the Nut Savior. They were celebrated widely, on a grand scale, despite the fact that August is a difficult and troublesome month for the peasant. The name of the holiday - "Savior" - is no coincidence: it became an abbreviation for the word "savior". Many important words originate from here: "thank you", "save". Despite the fact that at present folk traditions have lost ground, it is interesting to know how and when to celebrate the three Savior: Honey, Apple, Nut.

Honey Savior

The First Savior - Honey - is traditionally celebrated on August 14. It is believed that it was after this day that the bees carry honey, which has lost their healing properties and it should not be eaten. Before the Savior of Honey, they tried to collect the entire harvest and consecrate it in the church that day. It is customary to give each other jars with the new harvest, and even the beggars were left with a tasty healthy treat near the church. In addition to honey, on August 14, water was especially honored. It was on this day according to the old style that major event- Baptism of Russia.

Apple Spas

Apple Savior Day - August 19. Only now, according to tradition, you can taste apples and any dishes from them for the first time. With the rising of the sun's rays, our ancestors hurried to the gardens to pick tasty apples, went to the market to buy a fresh crop. In addition to apples, on August 19, a sample of grapes and pears was taken. On the same day, in the churches, the priest illuminated the fruits, and then a real holiday began. Tables of great-grandmothers were full of pies, pies, apples baked with honey. The guests who came were generously treated with liqueurs.

Nut Spas

The Nut Savior is the third in a row, celebrated on August 29 and is the most important among the other summer holidays. In another way, this day is called Bread Savior. It is this name that is more accurate and true. On August 29, the harvest season ends, and for the first time the housewives bake from flour this year's harvest. In the church, a festive loaf is consecrated, and only after that a sample is taken. Along with the grains and bread, they brought to the temple and nuts, which just ripened. Naturalists also justify the name Spas "Nut": studies have proven that it is by this time that the final ripening of nuts occurs, and now they can be eaten without fear for health.

There was no time to celebrate this holiday especially, since the end of August is a hot time for a villager. But our ancestors baked special bread and treated them to those who asked for alms. It was believed that even those who do not have enough grain should generously give bread of the new harvest to all those in need - then wealth and good luck will come into the house. and Nut Spas are the main summer holidays, since it was from the end of August that the time for collecting and preparing almost all the gifts of nature began.

Folk omens on the Nut Spas

On Orekhovy Spas, the third "tasty" summer holiday, they finished the harvest and made a special "birthday sheaf" - the last sheaf of the outgoing year. On this day, the last swallows fly away to winter. It was important for the villagers to know what date the Nut Spas is in order to finish all the work in the fields. The peasants were in a hurry to remove the grain before August 29, and those who did not have time were happy to help neighbors and relatives - it was believed that for this God would give health and prosperity.

If on the day when the Nut Savior is celebrated, the cranes fly to the south, then the winter will be cold and snowy, if the birds remain, then winter time will be warm. Walnut twigs, plucked and illuminated on August 29, are able to heal the sick, drive out evil spirits from the house.

An interesting saying was formed among the people: "Petrovka is a hunger strike, Spasovka is a gourmand." The word "Spasovka" originates from the word "Spas", which is called the three main Orthodox summer holiday... With the onset of the Nut Savior, life became truly tasty: the peasants were treated to ripe hazelnuts, juicy sweet apples, delicious aromatic honey.

Miracle canvas

An interesting story is told by the Bible. Legend has it that during the miracle of the healing of Vladyka Avgar, Jesus Christ wiped his face with a cloth of clean cloth, on which the divine face later appeared. The fabric with the face of Jesus is preserved to this day and gathers crowds of pilgrims. The canvas is able to work miracles, heal the sick, soothe the souls of seekers. In memory of this magical event, since ancient times, on August 29, cloths were brought to the church for illumination, from which they then sewed clothes for households throughout the year.

The saying has survived: "The first Savior - they stand on the water, the second Savior - they eat apples, the third Savior - they sell canvases on the green mountains." The event that happened thousands of years ago with an ordinary canvas is also revered in the church: on August 29, Orthodox Christians celebrate the holiday of the transfer of the image of Jesus Christ not made by hands from Edessa to Constantinople. This significant event took place already in 944, but even today church people remember and glorify the event.

Savior of many faces

Surprisingly, it is the Nut Spas that has many names that are justified from the Orthodox, cultural, household, agrarian point of view. Nut, Khlebny, on Canvas, on Canvas, Canvas - these are the names of the holiday, which is traditionally celebrated on a grand scale on August 29. It is important to know what date the Nut (Khlebny) Savior will be, because this day must be celebrated the way our ancestors did.

Holiday recipe

There is a recipe that is ideally suited to the end of the Dormition Fast, when all church prohibitions have already ended. At the end of Honey, Yablochny and Nut Spas, baked apples with honey and nuts are suitable. This dish is a kind of ritual treat that marks the end of the main work in the field and heralds a well-fed winter.

To prepare a delicious treat, you need to take several large apples, 250 g of honey, 100 g of any nuts. Wash the apples well, cut the core, put them in a deep frying pan and bake until half cooked. Melt honey in a water bath, add chopped nuts, mix thoroughly. Stuff the apples with the mixture, send to the oven for a couple of minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar on top, if desired.

Three days of August are not just so highlighted among others and endowed with special magic. For centuries, people have noted that these days something special, mysterious is happening in nature. Nowadays, we celebrate other holidays, which are often invented completely by accident and do not carry any deep meaning... So why do we need to know now what date is the Nut Savior? Why should you follow the traditions of your ancestors? Is it so important to remember how in Russia it was customary to celebrate the Apple Savior and the Nut Savior?

We must know, remember, celebrate and honor Orthodox posts, holidays are not only for the sake of respect for our great-grandmothers. In the old days, they strictly adhered to the laws of the Bible, which apply at all times. To improve life, health, preserve mental and mental balance, it is important to believe in God, to value and respect the knowledge accumulated over thousands of years.

According to the Orthodox Church calendar The Nut Savior is celebrated on August 29. This is the third Spas after the honey and apple versions of the holiday, which also fall on the last summer month. Another name for the Nut Spas is Khlebny Spas.

Christians celebrate the event at the very end of summer, on August 29. In addition to the two names already mentioned, the holiday in some regions is also called the Savior on Canvas. As for the Orthodox and ecclesiastical name of this day, it is recorded in the calendar as the Savior Not Made by Hands.

From the history of the holiday

Nut Spas: the history of the holiday and traditions are rooted in the distant past. This holiday is called not made by hands for the reason that when Jesus Christ washed, he wiped his face with a towel. His face was imprinted on this towel. The Image of Christ not made by hands is a symbol of this day. The image was not created by human hands - it was created by God himself.

It is because of this biblical story related to the towel that the people traditionally went to the Nut Savior to consecrate natural fabrics. In the old days, women made these fabrics themselves, then blessed them in church and sewed clothes for the whole family. The popular name Orekhovy Spas was given due to the fact that at this time of the year in the villages they were already harvesting nuts. It was also customary to consecrate them in the church - the tradition is still preserved in many regions.

This is a beautiful church holiday with deep national roots. People have always venerated the Three Savior in August, and it is nice that this tradition has been preserved in our time.

Based on materials from open sources

Nut Savior in 2018 is celebrated on August 29. This is a popular Christian holiday, the last of the three Savior. It is associated with the veneration of the canvas, which depicts the image of the Savior. The official church name of the holiday is the Transfer from Edessa to Constantinople of the Image Not Made by Hands (Ubrus) of the Lord Jesus Christ. The people also call this day the Third or Bread Savior.

history of the holiday

The Third Savior is also called Not Made by Hands, or the Savior on Canvas, because of a miraculous event that happened during the life of the Savior. When the Syrian ruler was exhausted from a serious illness, he decided that only the Son of God could heal him. Despite the fact that he never had a chance to see Christ alive, he believed in him and wrote him a letter asking for the healing of his ailment.

Having instructed his painter Ananias to hand over the letter, he ordered to paint an image of Christ on canvas. When the painter arrived in Palestine, he saw with his own eyes Jesus Christ surrounded by the people. However, he could not approach him, so he climbed onto a high stone and tried to paint his portrait.

When the Son of God noticed this, he called the painter to him, took the letter and promised that his disciple would soon come to the governor and give him healing, and then asked to give him water and a towel. After washing his face, he dried himself with a towel, on which his divine face suddenly appeared. Before the arrival of the disciple, the disease had already left the ruler, and the image of Jesus Christ became the main shrine of the Syrian city of Edessa.

What does the Nut Savior mean for the church

In the church, of course, there is no official holiday with that name. Orthodox Christians celebrate on August 29 a holiday with a different name - Transferring the Image of Jesus Christ Not Made by Hands to Constantinople. Therefore, one of the names for this day is Savior Not Made by Hands.

The image not made by hands, according to biblical tradition, arose after Jesus washed and wiped his face with a canvas towel. His holy face was forever reflected on this towel, and it became one of the most important shrines for all Christians.

It was from this image that the first icon painters wrote the image of Christ, which for centuries all Christians have been guided by and which is considered the true appearance of the Savior.

The shrine is miraculous. According to an ancient legend, this image of Christ healed the inhabitant of the city of Edessa from a fatal disease. Thanks to this, Christianity quickly became popular among all the inhabitants of this city.

Nut or Bread Savior: what and how do we celebrate?

Our ancestors lived in a special agricultural calendar, which is why there are so many church holidays combined with those echoes of pagan traditions that existed before the arrival of Christianity. It is not by chance that the Savior is called Bread, because it was on these days that the harvesting and sowing of winter crops stopped. And the name "nutty" stuck because of the beginning of the harvest of nuts, which were a valuable reserve for the winter, as well as a source of vegetable oils.

August 29 is also known as a holiday Savior not made by hands, he is the Savior on canvas or canvas. It was on this day, many years ago, that the image of Christ not made by hands, which was obtained after Jesus washed and wiped his face with a canvas, was transferred to Constantinople.

What can you do on the third Savior? On this day, new wells and everything related to water were traditionally consecrated. We went to the bathhouse to steam with walnut brooms. It was believed that today the strength of the nut passes to man in this way.

The main dish on the table is, of course, bread made from flour of the new crop with nuts. You can bake anything you like, since the fast is over and you can use butter, eggs, and other flavorful ingredients. And, of course, wine is not forbidden.

Nuts and breads are holy in churches, but vegetables, apples, honey, poppy seeds are not forbidden. Just remember that when you bring food to the temple, you offer it to God first of all, and do not expose it to the spray of holy water, so that the food will receive healing properties.

And in some regions of our country, on the third Savior, future schoolchildren are necessarily taken to church, blessing them at the beginning of their studies, because school is not far off.

After the third Savior, summer finally surrenders to the arms of autumn. Birds huddle in flocks and fly away to warm lands for wintering. There is a sign that if the cranes fly away to the Nut Spas, then there will be frosts on Pokrova.
