At some point, he decided to visit the kingdom of Daria Petrovna - the kitchen. The first couple of times he was chased away, but then he was already lying next to the basket of coals and watched how it worked.

But one day Sharik seemed to be pricked with foreboding, melancholy came over him. I didn't feel like eating. After the walk with Zina, everything seemed to go on as usual. Exactly until the professor got a call.

Dr. Bormental arrived with a foul-smelling suitcase. Sharik was locked in the bathroom and left without lunch. The dog rushed about in the dark and howled. Then he was dragged into the examination room. They put a collar on him, poked him in the nose with cotton wool, and his legs suddenly stopped holding Sharik.

Sharikov received his documents. But Bormental and Preobrazhensky refuse to call him by name and patronymic. And the hero, in turn, does not want to be "Mister Sharikov", because "all gentlemen are in Paris." The professor understands that Shvonder's influence is growing stronger. A new scandal - Sharikov, waving his documents, claims to have a living space in the professor's apartment. He promises to shoot Shvonder and, in return for eviction, threatens Polygraph with deprivation of food. At night, Daria Petrovna expels the drunken Polygraph from the kitchen, Bormental promises to make him a scandal in the morning, but Sharikov disappears, and when he returns, he says that he got a job as the head of the department for cleaning Moscow from stray animals.

A young typist appears in the apartment, whom Sharikov introduces as his bride. They open her eyes to Polygraph's lies - he is not at all the commander of the Red Army and was not wounded at all in battles with whites, as he claimed in a conversation with a girl. The exposed Sharikov threatens the typist with staff reductions, Bormental takes the girl under his protection and promises to shoot Sharikov.

Chapter nine

The professor is visited by his former patient - an influential man in military uniform... From his story, Preobrazhensky learns that Sharikov wrote a denunciation against him and Bormental - they allegedly expressed death threats against Polygraph and Shvonder, made counter-revolutionary speeches, illegally store weapons, etc. After that, Sharikov is categorically offered to get out of the apartment, but at first he is stubborn, then becomes impudent, and in the end he even pulls out a pistol. The police come to the professor's apartment on a tip from Shvonder. They have a search warrant and, based on the results, an arrest on charges of Sharikov's murder.

However, Preobrazhensky is calm - he says that his laboratory creature suddenly and inexplicably degraded from a man back to a dog, and shows the police and the investigator a strange creature, in which the features of Polygraph Poligrafovich are still recognizable.

The action takes place in Moscow in the winter of 1924/25. Professor Philip Philipovich Preobrazhensky discovered a way to rejuvenate the body by transplanting the endocrine glands of animals to humans. In his seven-room apartment in big house at Prechistenka, he receives patients. The house is being "compacted": new tenants are being brought into the apartments of the previous tenants - " tenants". The chairman of the house committee Shvonder comes to Preobrazhensky with a demand to vacate two rooms in his apartment. However, the professor, having called one of his high-ranking patients by telephone, receives an armor for his apartment, and Shvonder leaves with nothing.

Professor Preobrazhensky and his assistant doctor Ivan Arnoldovich Bormental dine in the professor's dining room. Choral singing is heard from somewhere above - this is a general meeting of the "tenants". The professor is outraged by what is happening in the house: a carpet was stolen from the front staircase, the front door was boarded up, and now they are walking through the back door, all galoshes disappeared from the galosh counter in the entrance at once. "Devastation," Bormental notes, and receives in response: "If, instead of operating, I start singing in chorus in my apartment, I will have devastation!"

Professor Preobrazhensky picks up on the street mongrel dog, sick and with stripped hair, brings him home, instructs the housekeeper Zina to feed him and take care of him. A week later, a clean and well-fed Sharik becomes an affectionate, charming and beautiful dog.

The professor conducts an operation - transplants the endocrine gland to the Ball of Klim Chugunkin, 25 years old, three times convicted of theft, playing the balalaika in taverns, who died from being stabbed. The experiment was a success - the dog does not die, but, on the contrary, gradually turns into a man: it gains in height and weight, his hair falls out, he begins to speak. Three weeks later, he is already a man of small stature, unsympathetic appearance, who plays the balalaika with enthusiasm, smokes and swears. After a while, he demands from Philip Filippovich to register him, for which he needs a document, and he has already chosen his name and surname: Polygraph Poligrafovich Sharikov.

From his former doggy life, Sharikov still has a hatred of cats. Once, chasing a cat that ran into the bathroom, Sharikov latches the lock in the bathroom, accidentally turns water tap, and floods the whole apartment with water. The professor is forced to cancel the appointment. The janitor Fyodor, summoned to fix the tap, embarrassedly asks Philip Philipovich to pay for the window broken by Sharikov: he tried to hug the cook from the seventh apartment, the owner began to drive him away. Sharikov responded by throwing stones at him.

Philip Philipovich, Bormental and Sharikov have dinner; over and over again Bormental unsuccessfully teaches Sharikov good manners. To Philip Filippovich's question about what Sharikov is reading now, he replies: "The correspondence between Engels and Kautsky" - and adds that he does not agree with both, but in general "everything must be divided", otherwise "one sat in seven rooms, and the other is looking for food in rubbish boxes. " The indignant professor announces to Sharikov that he is at the lowest stage of development and nevertheless allows himself to give advice on a cosmic scale. The professor orders the harmful book to be thrown into the oven.

A week later, Sharikov presents the professor with a document, from which it follows that he, Sharikov, is a member of the housing association and is entitled to a room in the professor's apartment. That same evening, in Professor Sharikov's office, he appropriates two ducats and returns at night completely drunk, accompanied by two unknown persons who left only after calling the police, taking, however, Philip Philipovich's malachite ashtray, cane and beaver hat with them.

That same night, in his office, Professor Preobrazhensky talks with Bormenthal. Analyzing what is happening, the scientist comes to despair that he got such scum from the cutest dog. And the whole horror is that he no longer has canine, namely human heart, and the lousiest of all that exists in nature. He is sure that in front of them is Klim Chugunkin with all his thefts and convictions.

Once, having come home, Sharikov presents to Philip Filippovich a certificate from which it is clear that he, Sharikov, is the head of the sub-department for cleaning the city of Moscow from stray animals (cats, etc.). A few days later, Sharikov brings home a young lady, with whom, according to him, he is going to sign and live in Preobrazhensky's apartment. The professor tells the young lady about Sharikov's past; she sobs, saying that he passed off the scar from the operation as a battle wound.

The next day, one of the professor's high-ranking patients brings him a denunciation written against him by Sharikov, which mentions both Engels thrown into the furnace and the professor's "counter-revolutionary speeches". Philip Philipovich invites Sharikov to collect his things and immediately get out of the apartment. In response, Sharikov shows the professor a shish with one hand, and with the other takes a revolver out of his pocket ... A few minutes later, the pale Bormental cuts the bell wire, locks the front door and the back door and hides with the professor in the examination room.

Ten days later, an investigator appears in the apartment with a search warrant and arrest warrant for Professor Preobrazhensky and Doctor Bormental on charges of murdering the head of the cleaning department, P. P. Sharikov. “Which Sharikov? the professor asks. "Ah, the dog I operated on!" And he presents to the newcomers a strange-looking dog: in places bald, in places with spots of growing hair, he goes out on his hind legs, then gets up on all fours, then again rises on his hind legs and sits down in a chair. The investigator faints.

Two months pass. In the evenings, the dog sleeps peacefully on the carpet in the professor's office, and life in the apartment goes on as usual.

In the cold and dank alleyway, a homeless dog suffered from hunger and pain in his scalded side. He recalled how the cruel cook scalded his side, thought about delicious sausage scraps and watched the typist running about her business. The dog understood that, sick and hungry, he could not survive, and firmly decided not to go anywhere else, but to stay here, at cold wall... A citizen, or rather a gentleman in a coat, appeared on the other side of the street. The dog smelled the alluring smell of Krakow sausage and in the last dash of madness crawled out of the gate onto the sidewalk. The smell rejuvenated him, gave him strength to crawl to the mysterious gentleman. He bent down, broke off a piece of sausage and gave it to the dog. After such a royal treat, Sharik was ready to follow this man to the end of the world, and when the master called him to follow him, the dog immediately ran after him. On the way, he still did not believe that he had such a good luck. He demonstrated his devotion to the man in every possible way, for which he was awarded the second piece of Krakow. After a while, the dog and his benefactor reached Obukhov Lane, and, to the dog's surprise, the doorman let him and the man into the house. Fedor, the doorman, told Philip Philipovich that new tenants had moved into one of the apartments, and they would be new plan settlement of apartments as representatives of the house committee.

Then Sharik began to practice reading and began to navigate the streets of Moscow very well.

An unknown gentleman led the dog to the apartment, the door of which was opened by a young and beautiful woman in a white apron. Sharik was immediately invited into the hall, where he was very impressed by the mirror up to the floor and the electric lamp under the ceiling. The master immediately examined the wound on the side of the dog and ordered him to be taken to the examination room. However, the ball realized that now something terrible and incomprehensible would happen in the dazzling room, it twisted and tried to escape. His attempt was in vain, even after he snatched a new identity, a man in a dressing gown. He was caught, something with a nauseous and sweet smell was brought to his nose, and he fell to one side.

When Sharik woke up, his side was bandaged and the burn wound did not hurt at all. He lay and listened to the conversation between the two men, the bitten one and Philip Filippovich. “Terror can do nothing with an animal, no matter what stage of development it is at,” said Philip Filippich and ordered Zina to buy more sausages for Sharik.

Sharik gradually recovered and on unsteady legs went to the office for his savior. There he was again surprised by the electric light and a huge stuffed owl on the wall. The dog lay down on the carpet, and Philip Philipovich began to receive patients. Finally, Sharik realized that he was not in an ordinary house. One after another, people with various illnesses came to his benefactor, and this continued until late in the evening. However, the last guests were 4 young people who were different from other visitors. Philip Filippych, after short negotiations, learned that these people are the new house management of the Kalabukhov house. Shvonder, Vyazemskaya, comrade Pestrukhin and Sharovkin decided to take away 2 rooms from the professor in favor of the public. To which the professor called on a special phone and demanded assistance from the subscriber. Apparently, there was a very influential person on the other end of the line, because the chairman of the new house committee, Shvonder, after talking with him, completely backed down from his claims and left with his group. And Sharik respected his master for his ability to upset impudent people.

The sumptuous dinner, which followed immediately after the departure of the four guests, struck the dog on the spot. He had never experienced such a strange sensation - right after a large piece of sturgeon and a large bloody roast beef, he suddenly could not look at the food and dozed off. At supper Philip Philipovich got excited. He remembered the old days and compared the new order with the old, talking about the chaos in the heads and laziness of most people. The disappearance of the galosh rack in the entrance of the house in 1917 seemed especially significant to him.

After supper the doctor left, and the dog dozed blissfully. Only one thought bothered him - suddenly everything that happens will turn out to be a dream and upon awakening there will be snow, cold, hunger again. But nothing terrible happened, and day after day a handsome dog, well-fed and satisfied with life, was reflected in the mirror. "I must be handsome," thought the dog and enjoyed his new position. He ate as much as he wanted, tore up the owl, and he was only chided, but not kicked out or beaten, but bought a collar with a leash, and now all the dogs envied him when he walked down the street. Having appreciated the dignity of the collar, the dog boldly penetrated both the kitchen and the office of his deity.

But one terrible day since the morning, Sharik felt that something was wrong. And rightly so - after the doctor's call, a mess arose in the house. Bormental brought something in a briefcase, and Philip Filippitch was extremely agitated. Oddly enough, the commotion also affected Sharik, he was categorically forbidden to eat and drink, he was lured into the bathroom and locked up. After terrible minutes of waiting, Zina dragged Sharik into the examination room, and there the dog suddenly saw the fake eyes of the bitten one and realized that something terrible was going to happen. They again poked cotton wool with a nasty smell in his nose, and he lost consciousness.

Sharik was lying on a narrow operating table. Bormental cut off the hair from his head, and Philip Philipovich was preparing for the operation. First, he slashed across the stomach and removed the seminal glands, inserting in their place some other, saggy ones. Quickly stitching up his stomach, Preobrazhensky opened the dog's skull and pushed out the hemispheres of the brain. Bormenthal noticed, turning pale, that the pulse was dropping, and made an injection somewhere in the region of the dog's heart, while Philip Filippich made an epididymis transplant between the cerebral hemispheres.

After the operation, both the doctor and the professor were sure that the operated dog would die.

From the records it is clear that the operation that Preobrazhensky performed was an experiment to find out the effect of pituitary transplantation on the rejuvenation of the body in humans. Despite the seriousness of several difficult days, the dog is clearly on the mend, although his condition can be called strange. Both pulse and temperature began to differ from usual, and moreover, hair began to fall out on the forehead and sides. After some time, Dr. Bormental noticed that the usual barking turns into a groan, and sometimes the word "a-b-y-r".

On January 1, an excited record appears in the doctor's diary that the dog laughs and happily barks "abyr-valg". Preobrazhensky deciphered this word, it means "chief fish". The next day, the dog got up on its hind legs, being almost as tall as Bormental, and confidently held on for half an hour.

An entry is inserted in the diary that Professor Preobrazhensky fainted, and the dog scolded him for his mother.

On January 5, the dog's tail fell off, and he distinctly said "pub". From that day on, the dog's vocabulary began to expand, he repeated all the swearing and several ordinary words... His appearance is strange, the hair fell out everywhere, except for the head, chest and chin. Otherwise, he looks like an emerging man.

Meanwhile, rumors are spreading around the city. In the "Vechernaya Gazeta" and in the gossip of onlookers, myths about the miracle are distinguished. Some talk about a Martian, some about a child playing the violin.

The professor admitted his mistake in the calculations. It turned out that changing the pituitary gland gives not rejuvenation, but humanization. The result of the experiment can now walk around the apartment, swear, laugh, and the professor cannot hide his confusion. The creature not only talks, but is rude, and consciously. On January 12, he began to maintain conversation and read. Bormental suggested that the professor develop the personality of a new creature, but he turns more to the history of the person from whom they took the pituitary gland - Klim Grigorievich Chugunkin, a 25-year-old single non-partisan conditionally convicted person.

After some hiatus in his notes, Dr. Bormental described the creature as a fully formed human of small stature.

Dr. Bormental realized that this is a completely new organism and must be observed first. The former dog makes a short acquaintance with comrade Shvonder. The little man began to wear a poisonous blue tie and lacquer boots, which made Philip Filippych uncomfortable. In addition, the creature began to behave more and more insolently - to sleep on the shelves in the kitchen, spit on the floor, watch for Zina in the dark. Preobrazhensky decided to talk to him, but this made it even worse - the man demanded a document to register in this house. He chose a name for himself - Polygraph Poligrafovich Sharikov.

Shvonder and Sharikov forced the professor to sign a petition for documents. Preobrazhensky remained at a loss for a long time, because the creature that was created in his laboratory could not be completely human from the point of view of science. But the law was really on the side of Sharikov. The professor signed the petition, and the triumphant Shvonder and Sharikov left the room. However, something out of the ordinary happened. A cat crept into the apartment, Sharikov dashed after him into the bathroom, the fuse clicked, and he was trapped. The cat jumped out of the viewing window and retreated. Philip Filippovich canceled all the patients and, together with the doctor, Zina and the doorman, began to save Sharikov. During the fight with the cat, he turned off the taps, and now the water flooded the entire floor in the apartment. Sharikov was rescued by the doorman and helped everyone clean up the water, but he spoke such absurd boorish words insolently that the professor kicked him into the hallway and closed the door. It turned out that Sharikov was breaking the windows of his neighbors, dragging himself after the cooks. The professor had to pay for it.

At lunch, the doctor and professor tried to teach Polygraph to behave normally. But the result of observation surprised them very much - Polygraph has the same propensity for alcoholism as Klim Chugunkin. In addition, it turned out that Sharikov does not like theater or books of fiction, but loves the circus and reads the correspondence between Engels and Kautsky.

After a verbal skirmish, when Sharikov defended his right to his exploits, and the professor scolded him for his behavior, Dr. Bormental went with him to the circus. When silence finally reigned in the apartment, Preobrazhensky went into the office and for a long time examined the bottle with the dog's pituitary gland. Apparently, he decided on something serious.

After 6 days, Sharikov's documents were brought. And he immediately began to demand a different attitude towards himself, and at the same time a room in the professor's apartment. To which the amazed and angry professor threatened him that he would no longer feed him. Sharikov calmed down and promised to behave himself.

The next night the professor and Bormental discussed new developments. Sharikov and two unfamiliar citizens stole 2 ducats, a malachite ashtray, a beaver hat and a memorial cane for Preobrazhensky. The drunken Sharikov opened as best he could. Then he felt bad, and until midnight all the tenants of the apartment ran around with the sick Sharikov. The professor and the doctor decided in the office what to do next. Bormental, worried about his teacher, decided to help him get rid of Sharikov, to which the professor categorically replies that he is to blame and must be responsible for the fact that such scum has turned out of the cutest dog. Bormental is even ready to kill, but Preobrazhensky does not allow him to get his hands dirty.

Here Daria Petrovna intervenes in the conversation, who in one nightgown dragged the drunken Sharikov. It turned out that he was molesting women again. It was decided to postpone the proceedings until the morning.

Sharikov's promised benefit did not happen. It turned out that he disappeared from the house along with all his documents, a bottle of tincture, doctor's gloves, in a cap and coat. Bormental decided to find him, ran to the house, but there he was refused, saying that they had not seen the scoundrel Sharikov.

It was decided to contact the police, but then Polygraph Poligrafovich showed up himself. With pride and dignity, he announced that he was now the head of the sub-department for cleaning the city of Moscow from stray animals. Bormental listened to the flayer and decided to force him to apologize to Daria Petrovna and Zina, which Sharikov did, humbled and half-strangled by the strong hands of the Aesculapius. To this, Bormental also demanded silence in the apartment and respect for the professor. All this time Philip Filippovich stood and silently watched what was happening.

Two days later, a young lady in cream stockings appeared in the quiet apartment. Sharikov decided to marry her and demanded his share in the apartment. Philip Filippich invited the woman to the office and there confessed to her in the transformation of the dog into a man. The young lady was very upset, because the scoundrel Sharikov lied to her from beginning to end both about his origin and about his position. Sharikov's marriage was upset.

The next day, one of his patients, a man in military uniform, came to the professor and brought a letter with a denunciation, which he received from Sharikov, Shvonder and Pestrukhin. The matter was not given a course, but now the professor clearly understood that he could no longer hesitate.

The crime ripened suddenly. After Sharikov returned to his apartment, the professor decided to kick him out of the house. To do this, they needed to have a serious conversation. Excited internally, but keeping outward calmness, Preobrazhensky told Polygraph to collect his things. To which Sharikov replied in his usual boorish manner and even pulled out a revolver. Thus, he himself approved Preobrazhensky in his decision. A few minutes later, the head of the cleaning department was already lying on the couch, and Dr. Bormental pressed a small white pillow on top of his face. When the doctor posted a cancellation notice on the door and cut the bell, the women realized the seriousness of what was happening. In the silence and darkness, the doctor and professor worked together again.

Ten days after these events, policemen came to the professor's apartment at night. A lot of people filled the waiting room, there were representatives of the house committee, namely Shvonder. As always, Philip Phillipych, confident in his abilities in a dressing gown and Bormental without a tie, appeared before their eyes. A man in civilian clothes charged them with the murder of Polygraph Poligrafovich Sharikov. But the luminaries of medicine did not recognize this and showed their dog to the uninvited midnight guests. He was, of course, a very strange look, walked like a circus performer, on two legs, in places he was bald, and somewhere his hair sagged in tufts. But it was a dog, not a man, and this was recognized by everyone present.

Atavism - the professor diagnosed - it is impossible to make a man out of a beast.

After all these events, the dog again sat in the evenings at the feet of his benefactor. He did not remember anything that happened to him, only headaches tormented him sometimes. And the professor persistently continued his research: he cut, examined the brain.
