9. Surge protection. Components.

Surge protection devices consist of components with functions to limit interfering influences to acceptable limits. It is therefore important to ensure that these protection devices are adapted to local requirements. These include operating conditions on the line and protection requirements resulting from the installation location. For guard input circuits switching stations and terminal equipment (telephone, fax, modem) must use multi-stage protection devices that can provide protection not only to personnel, but also to sensitive electronics. For use on a line, only primary (rough) protection is often sufficient. In cases where active components are installed in switch cabinets, it is also recommended to use multi-stage protection devices.

Regardless of the type and circuit used, all surge protection components are based on the same principle: any overvoltage is discharged into the ground. Depending on the component used, only a small part of the power is converted. One of necessary conditions This is due to the presence of low-resistance grounding.

Depending on the signal potentials, there are differences between 3-point and 5-point protection. For plinths with non-breaking contacts, only 3-point protection is possible, and for plinths with normally open contacts, 5-point protection is recommended (components connected in series in the line). When the protection plug is removed, the contact in the plinth opens, and possible currents will no longer be able to penetrate into the further connected circuit. 5-point protection can also be used for normally closed contacts.

Classification of LSA-PLUS plinths by contact type

Based on the type of contact, plinths can be divided into two large classes: openable and non-openable. Non-breaking plinths LSA-PLUS (connection module)

The contacts of non-opening plinths are constantly closed, due to the fact that they are stamped from one continuous metal plate. One row of pins is the cable side, and the second row, labeled 0 to 9 or 1 to 0, is called the crossover/subscriber side. The middle row of contacts provides the possibility of: a) parallel connection for measurements; b) installation of surge protection elements.

Cross - this is a space (can be a room, a closet, etc.) designated for switching wires that are used in a telephone exchange, in a LAN or when laying optical communication channels.

For proper channel switching, there are many different types of devices, so in order to correctly select them and design SCS, you need to clearly understand what each device or system is needed for and how to correctly use and install it. Let us demonstrate this process using the example of equipment from one of the market leaders, Krone.

1. Types of crosses

So, you need to start purchasing equipment by choosing cabinets or racks for cross-connect equipment. They are open type(racks) or closed type(cabinets).

1.1. Closed crossovers (cabinets)

On sale you can find wall boxes, wall drawers, wall cabinets. They differ in capacity, purpose and type of fastening. For example, a box can be designed for a small capacity of up to 20 pairs, a cabinet - for a capacity of 100 pairs. These types of boxes, drawers and cabinets are attached to the wall. This equipment is manufactured in a special climatic design UHL category 3, that is, it is suitable for use in a moderately cold climate indoors. Small-capacity boxes and boxes are used to create intermediate crossing nodes or to connect subscriber lines directly from devices to the cable network of a floor, building, or structure.

Outdoor cabinets are equipped double doors with special secret locks that protect the cross from unauthorized access by intruders.

1.2. Open type crosses (racks)

Racks can be produced in the following design solutions:

A) wall rack, wall cross or wall frame. Such equipment is attached to the floor and to the wall;

B) wall cross or wall frame, it is attached to the wall;

2. Skirtings

One of the main elements for installing cross-connect units is plinths; they are installed in cabinets and racks.

Plinth - this is a device in a plastic case that allows you to fix outgoing and incoming wires for switching channels using special clamps.

There are plinths with normally closed contacts and with non-opening contacts.

2.1. Non-opening plinth used in cross-connection to create a permanent connection.

3. Tools for working on cross-country equipment

4. Protection for plinths

Let's take a closer look at the technology for protecting plinths from overvoltage, which was introduced by Krone.

The basic principle of such protection is that all currents are diverted to the ground. There are differences in the principles of organizing this protection, depending on the types of plinths used. If plinths with non-breaking contacts are used, then protection devices can only be connected in parallel. Including the "serial" type in a line protective devices available for plinths with contacts that are normally open.

4.1. In the case of using plinths with non-breaking contacts, it is mandatory to use only 3-point protection devices . There are such implementation options - the use of primary or coarse surge protection, it is also possible to use fine (secondary protection). It is important to know that such devices are only suitable for plinths with non-breaking contacts.

4.2. 5 point protection devices suggest the following mechanism of operation:

A) implementation of overvoltage protection together with current protection,

B) step-type protection, which implements a variant of primary and secondary protection in combination with current protection.

In plinths in which the contacts are normally open, it is allowed to install 5-point protection devices with the “series” type of connection to the line. Sometimes 5-point protection is used in plinths with contacts that are normally closed.

This protection technology, developed by Krone, is called ComProtect. To organize this technology in practice, integrated protection plugs are used. They provide protection for peripheral and switching equipment, both primary and secondary overvoltage protection, together with current protection. The plug is usually used to protect plinths.

How to choose plugs for protection? It is necessary to look at the operating voltage, both for the system being protected and for the plug itself. In principle, the protection is not required to operate under normal operating conditions, because the protection system itself may be damaged, and the signal will not be transmitted through the cable system. We also advise you to pay attention to the “current protection” option, namely protection from the tail of the pulse. If the protection elements are overheated or overloaded, then you need to be very careful, as they can cause a fire or even a fire.

5. Components for cross-connect installation

In previous sections, we described in detail what plinths are and what they are needed for. But during installation, you will have a question: how to mount the plinths in a rack or cabinet? To do this, first of all, you will need:

The requirements for them are such that they must provide resistance to metal corrosion and increased stability for the entire structure. When choosing mounting clamps, you need to look at the depth of the cable compartment they are designed for and for how many plinths they are intended for.

5.3. Control cords are intended for connecting devices for checking telemetric parameters of the cable system.

5.4. Connecting cords necessary for unification different areas cable networks into a common global network, they are also used to connect end devices.

5.5. Plug assembly kit used for terminating control or connecting cords by specialists in order to create convenient (non-standard length) cords. It can also be used as a repair kit: if the plug on the control cord breaks, there is no need to throw away the cord and buy a new one; it is enough to purchase an assembly set of plugs and replace the failed plug yourself.

6. Accessory components for Krone installation

Let us briefly explain the purpose of some Krone components that may be useful to you when installing the crossover. There are components that perform an information or marking function. That is, with the help of such devices, an installation or repair specialist can easily determine the purpose of a particular cable, port, plinth, etc.

In addition to this function, it also protects against unauthorized access to the contacts of the plinths if non-breaking contacts are used. And in the case of using plinths with normally closed contacts, this plug prevents the circuits from opening.

Dustproof cap Mounted on top of plinths to protect against dust and dirt. In order to break the wires and connect to them, you need a disconnect adapter. It is used in plinths whose contacts are normally closed.
