DIY ceiling finishing options. How to decorate the ceiling in a house: what materials can be used, how much repair work will cost. Gypsum or cement plaster

The hemmed ceiling is more popular today than in Soviet times– bleached. Today, when answering the question of what can be used to sheathe the ceiling, you don’t have to suffer, since there is a wide variety of materials on the construction markets. finishing materials.

In this article we will review the most popular materials, so that you will know exactly what is best to cover the ceiling in your own house or apartment.
Regarding installation technology, you need to look for answers in other reviews; here we give only the characteristics of the materials, advantages and justification for the choice.

General information about sheathed ceilings

The technology for their installation is not the pinnacle of development by modern engineers. That is, these are not even tension structures, which are problematic to create with your own hands.

You don’t need any special tools or equipment or high professional knowledge. And you don’t even need skills in working with building materials - most of them are all cut with a knife or easily sawed, have a low specific gravity, are simply marked, and are attached through (or along the edges provided for this) with ordinary self-tapping screws, or with specially designed hardware.

There are many videos on the technology of installing different ceiling coverings on our website - after choosing the material, you can familiarize yourself with the procedure of work, “without leaving the checkout.” It will also tell you how the wiring and communications are laid inside - this is one of the common advantages of suspended or sheathed ceilings.

Another common advantage is that there is no need to thoroughly prepare the main surface for installation. There is a rough finish, the frame will hold up normally - all surface irregularities and defects will be hidden behind the cladding.

Materials

Let's start with the market leaders.

Drywall is dominant

The most common material for cladding ceilings and walls today is plasterboard. It is suitable for ceiling and wall mounting. It is actively used in private construction and repairs. public buildings. It can be found both in a huge, rich mansion and in a country house - the material is incredibly versatile.

Pros of plasterboard ceilings:

  • Easy to install;
  • Inexpensive;
  • Does not require maintenance;
  • Can serve for a very long time, if there is no constant contact with moisture, since the surface is easily repaired;
  • Installation of such structures is very simple;
  • An additional advantage is that, under the skillful influence of steam or when moistened, it takes bent shapes, which is very convenient when installing curved structures.

This same property of drywall is also considered a disadvantage: in case of excess humidity or under the influence of intense moisture vapor (for example, in the kitchen above gas stove) GCR loses its strength and deforms, until it completely crumbles. This means that the kitchen and bathroom are no longer needed. technical specifications material.

Advice! If you still have a liking for gypsum plasterboard, then there are also moisture-resistant options that are labeled gypsum board. They have a green cardboard shell and can be installed in rooms with high humidity. At the same time, its cost will be slightly higher than that of a simple one, but the difference is not critical - for a sheet you will overpay, on average, about 50 rubles, and the price, in general, is 300.

GCR is a fairly heavy material (1 sheet of 3 m2 weighs about 25 kilograms) compared to other competitors, so you need to use a metal profile made of galvanized steel for frames.

  • The metal frame is assembled quite quickly, and has all the necessary fittings for this, which are purchased separately.
  • Sometimes you can see drywall being installed on wooden slats or beams. This option does exist, but it is not without certain disadvantages. Wood is a slightly more “living” material than metal; it periodically expands and contracts due to differences in temperature and humidity.
    Therefore, such situational deformations negatively affect weak gypsum board fastenings, reducing the service life of the structure.
  • As a result, cracks may appear. It is also worth noting the non-ideal geometry of the slats, in contrast to the rolled profile.
  • Multi-level plasterboard ceilings with curved inserts - the standard modern design in the house!

PVC panels

This is also not a very expensive material that meets the standard requirements for false ceilings. They don’t look so attractive, and, as they say, the renovation smacks of cheapness, but with a skillful combination of materials, it can sparkle in a special way. The material is great for lining baths and kitchens, and here's why.

Among the advantages:

  • Easy to assemble structure;
  • Lowest specific weight of the structure;
  • Easy to care for;
  • The material does not allow moisture to pass through;
  • Durability and complete resistance to fungi and mold;
  • Wide range of textures and color shades.

Plastic products can be divided into panels and lining. The first ones have a large width and are not painted in bulk, but only on the front side.

The plastic lining, like its wooden counterpart, is about 10 cm wide, but it is uniform in color, more durable and resistant to temperature changes, which is why it can be used not only indoors, but also outdoors.

Advice! It is advisable not to use rough materials when washing ceilings made of PVC panels, since the surface is not scratch-resistant. Abrasive detergents do not use, the surface can be easily wiped off even with plain soapy water. You can use kitchen detergents.

To the ceiling, PVC panels and lamellas are hemmed onto profiles, also made of PVC, or onto a very ordinary wooden strip, which is what you see most often. In conditions of high humidity, instead of wood, you can purchase metal profiles, like for drywall.

You need to be careful during installation, as the material is fragile.

If PVC is not properly maintained, the lifespan of your ceiling will be short. With normal installation and proper care, the original appearance of the material is guaranteed to be preserved for more than 15 years.

Metal slats

One of the types of hemming surfaces is. “Metal-look” or real metal slats are also a popular type of cladding for a fashionable ceiling in a home.

Advantages:

  • The material does not need additional processing, and the base surface is in preliminary preparation.
  • There are no flammable polymers in the cladding, fire safety is absolute. Spraying to give color to the lamellas (slats) can be ignored; it is no more than a few micrometers thick.
  • All such metal structures weigh practically nothing, they can be mounted on any ceilings.

There is a big disadvantage - there is no sound insulation, like all metal coatings. Therefore, installation must be carried out immediately with a soundproofing layer.

Advice! Metal slats can be mounted on the ceiling in different directions, and even selected individual elements with different colors. It turns out very stylish, and most importantly – original!

Metal slats are quite easy to clean, but you need to be careful in their care, as scratches from abrasives and even rough materials easily remain on the surface. This is what the instructions say, read carefully.

MDF panels and boards

Wood fiber is also an excellent material for fulfilling your cherished dream of covering the ceiling in a house or apartment.

Advantages:

  • It holds sound and heat well for a thin material (of course, everything is relative);
  • Certain types (moisture-resistant, impregnated) can be used for rooms with high humidity - although the idea is questionable, and it is better to make do with more suitable products;
  • Lamination allows long-term use and easy cleaning;
  • Easy assembly;
  • Low own weight, allowing the installation of lightweight frames.

Cons: Most commercially available ceiling MDF boards They do not resist moisture in any way, are easily flammable, and are not an environmentally friendly material. They also have an easily damaged front side.

Tree

All materials – material allocated to a separate group. This also includes lining, including “Euro” types of cladding.

It is enough to look at numerous photos of ceilings covered with wood to understand the charm, comfort and beauty of the finish. Wood has a huge number of benefits, including durability.

But the main thing is absolute naturalness and the property characteristic exclusively of wood to create a favorable microclimate in the room.

Characteristics:

  1. Wood retains heat better than artificial counterparts.
  2. The material is “breathable”, as they say. That is, it allows air to pass through normally and promotes ventilation of the above-ceiling space.

The disadvantages include the following:

  • The properties of the cladding will depend entirely on the type of wood chosen;
  • It follows that you will have to pay a decent price for quality;
  • For the most part, wood is afraid of moisture, which requires you to regularly treat its surface with protective compounds.
  • The material is flammable and we require special precautions when installing electrical wiring.
  • Insects can settle in the wood, which will quickly render the cladding unusable.

Advice! The last two shortcomings are also eliminated through chemical treatment.

Here are brief answers to the problem of how to cover the ceiling in a house. The installation technology and characteristics of each design must be looked at depending on the selected material.

Any repair, even a simple cosmetic one, requires proper ceiling design. For various rooms Materials for finishing the ceiling are very important.
Even when making simple repairs using available materials, not every user knows how to decorate the ceiling in an apartment in a particular room and the finishing technology.

In order to choose a material for finishing the ceilings of an apartment, you need to decide on the design direction and determine the budget for finishing the ceiling.
After all, the design of the ceiling is not limited only to the classics; if desired, you can even create very individual options, it all depends on preferences.

Stretch ceilings are also very popular due to a number of positive characteristics.

It should be remembered that not every ceiling is suitable for painting, as even minor irregularities will appear. In this case, suspended or tension structures will be needed.

The best way to finish the ceiling, the exclusion method
Whitewashing, as a finishing option, is losing its popularity every year, unless we are talking about a modest small dacha outside the city. IN modern renovations

  • This option is practically not used, especially since there are serious restrictions for such premises as:
  • Boiler room.
  • Kitchen.

Bathroom. Painting the ceiling almost never goes out of fashion, it's universal method
finishing, but provided that the ceiling is fairly flat.

  • The ceiling painting technology consists of several stages:
  • Putty.
  • Primer diluted with water emulsion.
  • Painting the surface in several layers.

Advice. If you have a flat ceiling surface and you are wondering how you can decorate the ceiling in your bedroom inexpensively, then painting is the simplest and most reliable method. In addition, modern paints are environmentally friendly and quick-drying, safe for health, which is important for a room such as a bedroom.

Compared to other materials, paint has a number of undeniable advantages:

  • Modern special paint is not afraid of water, so after painting you can safely wash the ceiling, without even choosing special products.
  • If desired, you can change the interior of the room at any time, thanks to the wide range of colors.

In addition, this option is considered an inexpensive finishing material, but it will take time and effort to finish. See the photo for an example of a painted ceiling in a modern interior.

Wallpaper and tiles on the ceiling

Today, wallpapering the ceiling remains in demand. Of the inexpensive options, this is the simplest method of decorating the ceiling plane and provides the opportunity for various design developments.
Ceilings that use several types of wallpaper look especially interesting, with interesting patterns and pasted in different directions. If there are no options yet for how to decorate the ceiling in the living room inexpensively, then you can consider wallpaper as an option for ceilings even with a small error.

Advice. When choosing wallpaper as an option, be prepared for the fact that the process is quite labor-intensive. When finishing, you need to strictly ensure that no air bubbles form under the canvas. This problem applies especially to wide rolls.

Finishing with slabs does not require special preparation, installation is very easy, you don’t even need special instructions. This finish will allow you to very quickly make inexpensive cosmetic repairs that are not labor-intensive and hide all the unevenness and cracks in the ceiling.

Advice. When finishing with tiles, do not put too much pressure on the surface, as it is soft and delicate. To avoid leaving marks at the clamping points.

When finishing the ceiling with tiles, it is necessary to determine the starting point; usually the finishing is done from the middle of the ceiling (from the chandelier) and is evenly distributed over the entire plane. The trimmings will be obtained near the walls, then they can be covered with a special plinth.
Titanium glue or similar is used as a fastening element.

Liquid wallpaper as a finishing material for the ceiling

If the question arises of how to decorate the ceiling in a room, then of course one cannot fail to mention liquid wallpaper. This type finishing can add luxury and elegance to any room.
This type of material is perfect for rooms such as:

  • Living room.
  • Hallway.
  • Bedroom.
  • Children's room.

Silk plaster and liquid wallpaper are great alternative other finishing materials.
Instructions for finishing the ceiling with liquid wallpaper:

  • The entire surface is thoroughly cleaned of all contaminants.
  • Dry the ceiling.
  • Prime.
  • Using a trowel, apply silk plaster to the ceiling.

Advice. This type of finishing requires a number of specific skills, so before starting work, without experience, it is better to familiarize yourself with the training video or consult with a knowledgeable specialist.

Dropped ceilings

Finishing using suspended structures is the most common and popular option for modern houses, offices and city apartments. A suspended structure in most cases consists of a metal frame, which is attached to the load-bearing ceiling and cladding panels, which are attached to a metal frame.
So:

  • Suspended ceilings are most often used when the surface has radical differences and defects. In order not to engage in labor-intensive finishing, you can use a simple hanging structure, which will also allow you to hide everything. engineering Communication and create unique design ceiling plane.
  • In the kitchen and bathroom, it is best to use PVC panels (see Finishing the bathroom with PVC panels yourself: a step-by-step guide), suspended and slatted ceilings, but for ordinary rooms plasterboard structures and combined ceiling options are used.

Advice. Plasterboard construction is perfect for shaped curved designs; the material is easy to cut and install.

Ideally, for plasterboard construction and other types of suspended ceilings will do spacious room with high ceilings.

Stretch ceiling structures

This is the most universal type of finishing, which is suitable for absolutely any room, without restrictions. In addition, of all materials, this is the most durable, but also expensive, finishing of premises.
If you have not decided how to decorate the ceiling in the bathroom, then you don’t have to think that the tension structure will withstand everything negative impacts. Considering the small area of the room, the cost of the material will be insignificant, but the result will exceed all expectations.

Without special equipment and knowledge in this area, it will not be possible to do the installation yourself. PVC is heated to a certain state, stretched and fixed at the edges in baguettes.
With the help of PVC construction, you can hide all communication systems, irregularities and defects. Moreover, thanks to its unique features the ceiling will give the room elegance and luxury.

The ceiling plays an important role in the interior. The thematic design and impression of the entire room depend on the quality of its design and choice of style. There is furniture on the floor. The defect can be covered with a carpet. The walls are hidden behind cabinets and shelves. Pictures are hung on them and decorative ornaments. The finishing of the ceiling, its quality catches the eye from the threshold.

When decorating premises in new houses and major renovations of apartments, I always pay attention to the ceiling Special attention. Designers draw it last, as the final chord of the interior. Builders generally start finishing from the top and gradually work their way down to the floor.

Types of ceiling finishing and materials used

Modern technologies create new materials. Builders use them for decoration, including interiors in apartments and private houses. You can list endless ways to decorate rooms. Preserved in old buildings traditional way whitewashing with chalk or lime. The materials and preparation of the floor are familiar to everyone. Any housewife can freshen up her kitchen on her own in a few hours. Then it takes much longer to wash the floor and walls.

In addition, there are new and improved old ceiling finishing options:

  • Hemming, when finishing materials are screwed directly to the surface of the ceiling. This is done mainly using self-tapping screws.
  • Suspended ones are mounted on a specially created frame made of metal profiles and wooden slats.
  • The stretch ceiling is attached around the perimeter. The material is stretched and clamped into a special aluminum baguette.
  • Wallpapering is done directly onto the surface. Are used various ways decoration.
  • Slat and cassette ceilings are made of aluminum strips and plates with colored and mirror coating.

Many types of design and materials are missing. The list of ceiling finishing options is endless.

Finishing that requires high-quality surface preparation

All defects are clearly visible on the painted ceiling. The paint flows into the cracks, highlighting every unevenness. To prepare the floor in the apartment, I cover the surface with 2 - 3 layers of starting putty with stripping and a primer that improves adhesion. I use a ruler to check. After complete drying, I apply the finishing composition. Then the ceiling is finished with acrylic paints.

Wallpaper can be glued without finishing putty. They will hide small cracks and irregularities. But all the bulges and depressions will be visible. The drawing will only emphasize them. When the question arises of how to finish the ceiling, especially in an apartment, without wasting time on finishing minor defects, I recommend “wet wallpaper”. They can be applied using a special device that covers the plane in an even layer. A textured colored surface will hide roughness and give decorative look room.

Ceiling decoration using aluminum and plastic materials

Ceiling decoration in the bedroom

In the apartment high ceilings found in old buildings. Aligning them is problematic. But you can make hanging systems. The living room looks luxurious with slatted ceilings. The materials are practically eternal. Aluminum strips are coated with special paint. They bend into the desired shapes. The alternation of colors creates the illusion of a holiday, fireworks. Matte and glossy stripes of the same tone create intrigue and volume.

The design method excludes amateurs. I work only according to the project developed by designers and constructors. I make the frame from the profile in accordance with the drawing. Aluminum strips are bent and cut to order by the manufacturer. You can only install a flat ceiling without lamps without equipment.

An affordable way to finish the ceiling with aluminum is cassette. Rectangular and square blocks made of light metal are suspended on a special mount. The bottom surface has decorative finishing. Sputtering and powder paint give the surface different kind. Mirrors reflect the room, making it tall and spacious, and add light. You can combine colors and textures to create unique designs.

Stretch ceilings and materials for self-finishing

A distinctive feature of suspended ceilings is their installation after finishing the walls and floors. The most common materials are PVC film and its analogues. To decorate a room in an apartment, I use profiles and drywall. I take measurements after plastering the walls. The ceiling can be left as is. I remove the old mortar, which does not hold well, crumbles, and fix it with a primer.

PVC film is completely prepared by the manufacturer. It is decorated according to the sketch, made in a single color or with a pattern, and cut to the ordered size. There are three types:

  • satin – matte smooth surface;
  • mirror gloss, reflects light and contrasting colors in the interior, increases space;
  • matte is a classic option that harmonizes with all styles and finishes of walls and floors.

Having secured the profile - baguette - around the perimeter, I lay out the film with an assistant and begin to heat the room in the apartment using a heat gun. We close the door and window in advance. I make a multi-tiered ceiling, starting from the topmost section.

White or slightly bluish water-based paint will give the kitchen a classic look

When heated, PVC materials become soft and stretchy. Having secured the edges into clamps, we stretch the film, heating individual places with a stream of hot air. Everything must be done quickly. After all, you can’t stand the heat of 70 degrees for long. I install a stretch ceiling of any complexity with help in a few hours.

I am often asked how to decorate the ceiling yourself. For those who want to have tension structures, I recommend fabric. Standard materials used for decoration:

  • profile for cable laying;
  • plastic tube;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • curtain natural fabric.

The profile is attached around the perimeter. The finishing fabric is cut and sewn in advance. Natural fabric is lowered into water. When wet it stretches. The edges are tucked into the profile around the tube and tightened. Fixed with self-tapping screws through the canvas. You can make such a ceiling in an apartment when the heating is turned off and it is not hot outside - spring and autumn. Otherwise, you will have to use a spray bottle with water to prevent the fabric from drying out prematurely.

Drywall is indispensable when decorating stylish interiors

Pressed boards made of cardboard and gypsum are quite durable and have a smooth, glossy surface. They can quickly level surfaces in apartments, private houses, and any room. It is enough to screw it with self-tapping screws to the ceiling or mount it on a profile. Cracks and depressions can be smoothed out immediately with finishing putty.

For finishing damp and damp rooms green plasterboard with blue markings was created. It is resistant to water. The additive sheets were made gray to prevent fire. The markings on such plates are red. Finishing materials should be used to decorate the ceiling in accordance with their qualities.

The ability of the material to take any shape makes it indispensable for finishing multi-tiered stretch ceilings and figured ones. You can create entire compositions overhead.

Finishing options for a dacha and country house

Outside the city you want to take a break from the noise and breathe clean air. I am often asked the question of how to decorate the ceiling in a dacha. Natural materials are environmentally friendly. They breathe and do not emit harmful substances. The tree can retain its aroma for years and create a warm atmosphere of clean air.

In dachas and cottages, it is advisable to hem the ceiling with veneer or boards. Covered with wax or natural varnish, it will enchant you with the natural grain of the wood. It is enough to apply a new layer to wood protective coating once every 3 to 5 years and it will last for several decades without repair. Wood protected with varnish can withstand temperature changes if the stove is heated indoors in the winter sometimes when people come to rest. A budget option for the dacha, this is painting and a plastic suspended ceiling.

The interior is based on all parts of the room without exception. The overall perception of the room and the atmosphere that will reign there depend on how the ceilings are finished. It is known that ceiling coverings should be in harmony with the chosen style in color and shape. If the ceiling trim is luxurious and expensive, it immediately attracts attention.

Simplicity and conciseness allow you to shift your gaze to other elements. Modern options for finishing the ceiling in an apartment are varied. The choice of the final option always depends on the style you choose, financial capabilities, taste and area of the room.

To see how rich and varied the types of ceiling coverings are, just go to any hardware store. Because of this, many consumers do not know what to cover the ceiling with. We list only the main types of ceiling finishes:

  • whitewashing and painting;
  • pasting the surface with special wallpaper and slabs;
  • use of rack structures, plastic panels;
  • tension ceiling finishing option;
  • covering the ceiling with plasterboard suspended structures;
  • wooden ceiling lining.

Absolutely all methods of ceiling finishing, without exception, are actively used in the renovation process. Some have been used for 100 years or more, while other methods of finishing apartment ceilings are just beginning to come into use. It is extremely important to know the positive and negative ways of each method. After all, knowing how to hem the ceiling, it is much easier to make the right choice and make not just good, but excellent renovations in the room.

Classics are always appreciated

Perhaps the very first ceiling covering was created using classical finishing methods. Two hundred years ago, people did not know what a false ceiling was, but whitewashing and painting were used everywhere. In the “ceilings” category, the types of finishing are different, and apartment owners most often use these two methods. They are perfect for the ceiling, and at the same time require quite troublesome, difficult preparatory work.

Finishing the ceiling in a house with lime is good because the material itself costs little, and the design is 100% environmentally friendly. Covering the surface with lime is relatively easy; the result of whitewashing is a smooth, snow-white arch. It will suit absolutely any style, it just looks boring and ordinary. So there can be no talk of any individual decoration for the rooms.

The average service life of whitewash is 2-3 years. Therefore, before you decorate the ceiling in your house with lime, think about the feasibility of this method. It cannot be washed, and dirt is absorbed almost instantly. Before starting work, putty and primer must be carried out. Repeated whitewashing will require no less effort.

If you are interested in a beautiful ceiling finish from cheaper options, then painting will help create a perfectly smooth and attractive coating. By the way, in some cases, such a “roof” over your head can be washed.

Paint sellers will tell you how to finish the ceiling much better and more practically. The painted surface is a great opportunity choose any color and shade that will match the decoration of the room. And if you are a creative person, you can decorate the ceiling in the room in the form of a man-made canvas. Although creating such a masterpiece prolongs the repair time, the work will turn out to be unique and unusual.

Surface gluing is an art

What you can do to decorate the ceiling is special wallpaper. There are products various colors and textures. They help hide any cracks and unevenness in the ceiling covering. This material is also relatively inexpensive and will definitely not hurt your wallet. Its relief structure perfectly masks small defects.

The whole process of wallpapering can be described as inconvenient and quite labor-intensive. This is especially true in situations where you have to work alone. The advantage is that you don’t need a specific tool or special skills. In rooms with high level humidity, for example, in bathrooms, options for finishing ceilings with ordinary wallpaper are not suitable at all.

A separate topic for conversation is liquid wallpaper. Thanks to them, you can get rich, unusual decor with a completely seamless surface. The material is very easy to use and at the same time perfectly hides any defects.

You can also decorate rooms with ceiling tiles. Their characteristic feature is an unusual relief coating, you can choose the color and pattern. Elementary installation and affordable cost make ceiling tiles popular. So if you are thinking about how to decorate the ceiling in your apartment, pay attention to polystyrene foam.

Original suspended structures

To create a false suspended ceiling, first of all, a base is installed to which the finishing materials will be attached. The good thing about lining the ceiling is that you can always hide wires, pipes and other communications in the cavity of the frame. There is only one significant drawback - everything suspended structures significantly reduce the height of the room. This is why hemming is completely unsuitable for low rooms.

The first “contender” is drywall. When using it, false ceilings can be made at different levels, with a fantastic appearance and texture. How to cover a ceiling with plasterboard? Everything is very simple. The sheets are easy to cut and it is not difficult to give the desired shape. To arrange the surface with your own hands, the sheets are attached to the frame, and the seams are sealed.

The result is a vault finished in the best traditions, a monolithic and smooth coating. These types of ceiling finishes allow you to create non-trivial shapes and amazing solutions for any room. How to hem the ceiling and decorate it with additional means? For these purposes, you can use paint, although all other options are also suitable.

How to cover the ceiling in an apartment if traditional drywall does not suit you for one reason or another? Today you can sheathe the ceiling with panels that are made of plastic, gypsum, aluminum, have a mirror finish, and so on. The finished surface of the ceiling with your own hands can be smooth and structured. It all depends on what exactly you decide to cover the surface with.

When the room is too humid, how to properly hem the ceiling becomes the initial task. What ceilings are suitable for such rooms? Primarily from plastic panels and metal slats. This best materials, when it comes to significant temperature changes. Products wash quickly and do not change their appearance. Modern finishing looks laconic and juicy.

Gypsum finishing material is also resistant to moisture and can be painted and decorated with stucco.

All these advantages allow you to create unique design solutions. The only drawback of plaster is its considerable weight, which is why you simply cannot do without reliable fastening.

From tensile structures to laminate

The element lined with PVC film looks modern and unique. Wet areas polyvinyl chloride is not afraid and does not absorb dirt. And it can also be washed. Even if you have an idea of how to cover a ceiling with such material, it is advisable to entrust the work to specialists. It requires special equipment.

Installation costs aren't cheap, but if you're looking for a better ceiling finish, all the options listed above pale in comparison tension type finishing. It is durable, reliable and looks very elegant.

Laminate flooring also has certain advantages, which has recently become customary to install not only on the floor. By purchasing the required amount of material, you can create a unique ceiling and avoid unnecessary expenses.

Tree overhead? Why not!

If wood predominates in the interior of the room, how to sew up the ceiling, if not wooden slats? Since this is 100% natural material, it does not emit harmful elements, breathes well, and has a long service life. Due to its heavy weight wooden floor needs the same strong and reliable frame.

The most important stage of repair is the choice ceiling structure. It is better to think about it in advance, choosing the material in accordance with the style of the interior. The quality will depend on the characteristics of the material and the correctness of the work performed.

Upon registration modern interior In the home, special attention is paid to finishing the ceiling surface. Finishing materials for the ceiling are offered to consumers on the building materials market in various options color range, textures and performance characteristics. Can the ceiling be repaired? in the classic way(by attaching drywall to the main structure), plaster well, perfectly level and whitewash or wallpaper. Can you quickly create smooth surface by attaching modern finishing films and panels to the suspended frame. The main requirement when choosing a material is that it must correspond individual style home and fit harmoniously into the overall interior design.

Paint solutions

This type of finishing materials includes chalk, slaked lime, and all kinds of painting compounds. When decorating the surface, there is no need to install a profile frame that reduces the height of the ceiling in the room. And their price is low. However there is significant drawback— when installing lamps and ventilation air collectors, you will need to drill deep grooves and holes in the base ceiling structure.

Chalk and lime mortar

This inexpensive building material is sold in any hardware store. The chalk is sifted and applied to the plane in the form of an aqueous solution consisting of the following components:

  • chalk - 3 kg;
  • water - 5 liters;
  • wood glue - 30 grams;
  • Household blue – 20 grams.

The water is heated to 40 - 50 degrees, then a portion of wood glue and chalk is introduced into it alternately. The solution is thoroughly mixed. Dry blue is poured into a linen bag and lowered into a container with water. After complete dissolution and coloring of water in Blue colour, it is poured into the chalk solution to the desired shade.

Lime mortar is prepared from the following components:
  • slaked lime - 3 kg;
  • table salt - 3 tbsp. spoons;
  • water - 10 liters;
  • household blue – 10 grams.

Injected into a bucket of water slaked lime, blue-colored water, salt and mix.

Before applying a solution of lime or chalk to the ceiling, it should be filtered through thick fabric to remove undissolved particles and lumps.

Water-based paints

The most common materials for finishing ceilings are water-dispersion paints. There are several types of coloring solutions on sale, differing from each other in their characteristics:

  • Acrylic latex paints. Fast drying paint has a high level of whiteness and forms a deep matte layer. Used for finishing ceilings in dry rooms or rooms with moderate humidity. If necessary, it can be tinted with universal pastel colors.
  • Silicate paints. They are used to paint mineral surfaces, for example, plaster or previously treated with lime or cement mortar. The silicate coating has vapor permeability, moisture resistance and antibacterial properties.
  • Silicone paints. They form an elastic, vapor-permeable and moisture-resistant film. Like silicate solution, it is used for any type of mineral surface and does not require the use of special antiseptic additives.

Pasting building materials

With the help of pasting materials, you can adequately decorate the interior without large financial investments. They are quite simple and quick to install. This type of coating includes wallpaper and ceiling tiles.

Wallpaper

The ceiling can be decorated with four main types of wallpaper:

  1. Non-woven wallpaper. Two-layer material, one layer of which is coated with polyvinyl. Has a wide color palette or texture with patterns for painting. They are moisture-resistant, fire-resistant, washable, with a dense base, thanks to which they can hide minor defects on the surface. Thanks to the pressed structure, they allow air to circulate freely. When sticking to the ceiling, they do not need to be impregnated with glue. It is enough to treat the basic structure with adhesive. In addition, they are twice as wide as paper ones, which helps reduce the time for gluing them. They do not fade in the sun, do not accumulate dust and can last for many years.
  2. Vinyl wallpapers. A variation of non-woven wallpaper with a two-layer texture. The base is made of non-woven fabric or paper, on which a layer of polyvinyl chloride is applied. They are made using two methods: hot stamping and without stamping. The most popular subspecies is vinyl sheets- silk-screen printing, which has a smooth and pleasant to the touch surface. Their heavy base masks unevenness well, and the varied colors create an unusual decorative impression on the ceiling.
  3. Fiberglass wallpaper.

They are woven from glass fibers with different densities and thicknesses. They are given stability by impregnation with modified starch. Glass wallpaper can be painted with water-based or latex-based paints. Such materials for finishing ceilings are durable, resistant to fire and ultraviolet rays;

Fabric based wallpaper. Double layer material with paper base. The front side is coated with synthetic or natural materials:

  • flax;
  • cotton;
  • wool;
  • velor;
  • silk, etc.

When making such a coating, the fabric is impregnated with compounds, as a result of which the material acquires antistatic properties and does not fade in the sun, retaining its color and appearance for many years. The elegance of the textile covering will give the interior homeliness and additional warmth.

Liquid wallpaper.

They contain cellulose and textile fibers, as well as a binder - carboxymethylcellulose. They are characterized by high adhesion to any surface, elasticity, vapor permeability, sound insulation and thermal insulation properties. Liquid wallpaper well masks small defects on the surface, does not fade and does not accumulate dust. Disadvantage - not suitable for ceilings in rooms with high humidity levels.

Ceiling tiles

Ceiling tiles not only decorates the ceiling, but also insulates the apartment, creates sound insulation, hides minor irregularities, and also visually increases the size of the room.

It is made from various materials:

  • expanded polystyrene;
  • wood;
  • metal

Expanded polystyrene tiles, in turn, differ in their manufacturing technology:

  1. Stamped tiles. It is made from foam blocks by pressing. The thickness of the finished product is 6 - 8 mm. The tiles are very fragile, hygroscopic, and have a loose outer layer that is not recommended to be washed.
  2. Extruded products. The manufacturing material is extruded polystyrene foam, which has a fine-grained structure. It has a smooth and dense surface covered with a water-repellent film. Such tiles are durable, easy to clean and can restore their shape after deformation. This type of ceiling finishing material has a wide color palette with or without a printed pattern.
  3. Injection tiles. Obtained by high-temperature processing of polystyrene foam raw materials. The product with a thickness of 9–14 mm has a shape with clear geometric lines. Durable injection tiles do not accumulate moisture, are fireproof, environmentally friendly and have good thermal insulation characteristics. The smooth edges of the product can be tightly joined together and thus create an absolutely seamless coating. The surface may be white for painting, colored or with imitation of other materials: wood, ceramics, fabric or marble.

Wooden tiles are highly durable and can withstand physical and mechanical stress. Dry wood is used to make it:

  • oak;
  • mahogany;
  • aspen;
  • pine trees;
  • lindens, etc.

Each type of wood has its own texture and a product made from it makes it possible to uniquely decorate the interior of a living room or kitchen in an antique style. The outer side can be smooth, structured or decorated with carvings.

One of the most expensive finishing materials for the ceiling in the house is metal tiles.

Its surface can be:

  • concave;
  • convex;
  • matte;
  • mirror;
  • smooth.

It is made from of stainless steel and additionally cover the surface with a protective moisture-resistant layer of polymer. It is very durable, lightweight, does not burn and can withstand temperature changes.

Building materials with fastening to suspended structures

Finishing the ceilings in the apartment is possible modern materials, for which you need to set profiles in advance. Allows you to mask all surface defects, as well as hide utility lines and secure recessed lamps.

Hemmed ceilings

For them, you need to first assemble a frame from the base structure metal profiles or wooden block, on which they will subsequently be attached finishing panels. You can hem the ceiling with different types of material:

  • gypsum panels;
  • chipboard panels with laminated front side;
  • fiberboard panels coated with plastic;
  • MDF panels;
  • plastic panels.

Stretch ceiling

The structure of the stretch ceiling is made under the influence of high temperatures from sheets of elastic materials: polyester fabric or ultra-thin PVC films. With their help, they create absolutely smooth ceiling surfaces, allowing you to hide all the unevenness of the base structure and fit perfectly into any interior design. The product is resistant to moisture, corrosion and ultraviolet radiation. Has a wide range color solutions and textures. Stretch ceilings can have:

  • Matte surface. It has a seamless rough texture that looks like plaster. They do not reflect glare from artificial lighting and sun rays, will not tear when flooded, will not crack and will not change their bright color over time. Matte products will fit perfectly into any classic interior.
  • Glossy sheen. Glossy suspended ceiling is able to accumulate and reflect light, thus making the room brighter and visually higher.
  • Texture reminiscent of satin or chintz. They are produced mainly in milky, light cream, soft green, pink and white colors. Light colors of a satin stretch ceiling visually expand the dimensions, making the space more voluminous.
  • Applied photo printing or artistic drawing. Photo printing and artistic painting are applied to a matte or satin stretch ceiling, reflecting your imagination and taste.

You can also install any type of lamp or a combination of several types of light sources in the canvas, thus visually expanding the space of the room or focusing attention on a certain part of the interior.
