In my kitchen there are cutting boards and wooden spoons lost their former shine, and began to look a little parched. Plus, the wife washes them in dishwasher, as a result of which cracks began to appear on them.

Asking about the return of its former beauty, I heard about the "Soviet oil" and decided to apply this recipe in my own kitchen.

Step 1. Ingredients

  • Wax. I needed a quality beeswax. I found it on the market in the form of small granules. There was an option to buy from a local beekeeper, but I did not like its color - it was too dark.

Pay attention to the composition: you need beeswax, not mixed with paraffin or other cheaper waxes. Pure beeswax has antibacterial properties for which it is valued. It can also be bought whole and grated.

  • Mineral oil I bought in a pharmacy for 60 rubles. Oil options from hardware stores are not suitable.

Do not use olive oil or coconut oil as it will eventually turn rancid and mineral oil no. I still do not advise you to purchase ready-made oils for impregnating kitchen utensils, since there is no certainty that they are suitable for food surfaces.

  • Glass jar: I used a 200 ml jar, which was enough to process all wooden products that I had, and even left a little in reserve. I chose a jar with a screw cap.
  • measuring spoon A: A tablespoon works well. If the jar has a narrow neck, you can use a teaspoon, the main thing is to keep the proportions.

Step 2: Mix and Melt

The recipes I found usually mix one part beeswax with three parts mineral oil. For my kitchen utensils, I used 2 tablespoons of beeswax and 6 tablespoons of mineral oil.

How to melt beeswax and mineral oil?

  • Option 1. Place the jar in a pot of water on the stove (make sure the water level is lower than the rim of the jar - it should only be half or a little more submerged) and bring the water to a boil. Remember to periodically stir the contents of the jar until the beeswax and mineral oil melt together.
  • Option 2. Place the jar in the microwave and heat for 30 seconds, then stir. Repeat the 30 second heating and stirring process until the beeswax and mineral oil melt together.

Once the ingredients are melted, carefully remove the jar from the pot or microwave using a towel or oven mitt (careful - the jar will be very hot) and let it cool to room temperature.

Step 3. Applying the composition to wooden products

Make sure the wood surface is clean and dry.

I scooped up a tablespoon of oil for a medium-sized cutting board and smeared it all over the surface with my hands. The warmth of the hands melted the oil, and it was well absorbed into the wood.

Then I left the processed wooden utensils for 12 hours so that it can absorb the oil well.

The next day I used soft tissue(can paper towel) to remove everything that has not been absorbed from the surface (but usually the oil is completely absorbed). The end result should be nice. smooth surface with a slight sheen.

The remaining oil (covered, of course) can be stored at room temperature for a long time, for example, for the next processing.

Cutting boards are essential in every kitchen. We cut all products on them, from vegetables to hard cheeses. We do not always have a separate board for each food group, and fruit and raw meat can be cut on the same board. And although the board is washed after each use, the result is not perfect. Ordinary soap and detergent are not as effective as they should be. After a few years of use, the board almost completely fails. But don't rush to throw it away until you try it. original ways cleaning.

1. Salt and lemon

This method works very well for cleaning wooden cutting boards. Sprinkle coarse salt on the board, and then start rubbing it with half a lemon, squeezing the fruit so that the juice begins to stand out. Rub until a gray liquid forms on the board. After the salt has dissolved, simply rinse off the remaining mixture with water and wipe the surface dry.

2. Lemon juice

If you don't have a fresh lemon on hand, you can change the recipe with salt by simply adding bottled lemon juice to it. Wipe the board with gruel using a hard sponge. If the pollution is very strong, leave the slurry of salt and juice for a couple of hours. In this case, you need to make the mixture thick enough, and there should be more salt in it.

3. Vinegar

Vinegar is great for getting rid of stains. You can use it neat or dilute it with water in proportions of 1:1. Vinegar not only cleans the board, but also kills bacteria. Pour the solution into a spray bottle, and add to the board after each use. Then wipe with hydrogen peroxide, and then simply rinse the surface with running water.

4. Bleach

Bleach is the most the best remedy for cleaning plastic boards. Fill the sink hot water and add half a cup of liquid bleach or whiteness. Leave the board in the sink for 20-30 minutes and then rinse thoroughly with soapy water to remove any traces of chemicals.

5. Baking soda

If your board is starting to smell bad, try using a paste of water and baking soda to get rid of the smell. Make a thick slurry on the board, and leave it for a while. Rinse off the baking soda and dry the board with a towel. The bad smell should be gone.

6. Vaseline

Wooden boards should not be left in water for a long time, because of this they become covered with ugly spots. And although they do not interfere with the use of the board, it will no longer be possible to put it in a prominent place. Just rub the stain on the board with petroleum jelly and leave it for 12 hours. After the Vaseline has been absorbed, wipe off the residue and wash the board. The spots should be gone.


7. Toothpaste

If the board has become rough over time, you can polish it with a mixture of baking soda and toothpaste. Just choose pasta white color not a gel. Wipe the surface along the grain of the wood. Then wipe the board with a damp cloth and dry.

8. Grated apples or potatoes

Another effective way eliminate bad smell- cover the board with gruel grated apple or potatoes. Leave the gruel for 10-15 minutes and then simply rinse with water. The smell will be much better.

9. Microwave

Small boards can be disinfected in the microwave. The method is not suitable for thin plastic. Do not leave the board in the oven for more than one minute. You can pre-wipe the board with soapy water and lemon.

10. Laundry soap

Be sure to lather the board with thick foam after cutting raw meat on it. It is better to immediately apply the foam, and only then wash off the traces of blood with water. Wipe down the board immediately after cutting to prevent stains from penetrating deep into the wood fibers.

11. Steel sponge

In the most advanced cases will have to refer to mechanically cleaning. The steel sponge actually removes a thin layer of wood, cleaning the stain. You should not resort to this method too often, but with some pollution you can not do without it.

12. White spirit

If the stain is too ingrained, moisten steel sponge in white spirit solution and rub well. After that, you need to thoroughly wash off the chemical with soapy water. Dry the board for outdoors for the vapors to evaporate completely.


13. Vegetable oil

Another way to polish scratched boards. Mix 3/4 oil with 1/4 vinegar and polish the board. It should become smooth.

Why is it necessary to soak the board with oil? In short - because it is beautiful and hygienic. Wood, as we know, is a porous material; oil penetrates into the pores and protects the wood from excess moisture and foreign odors. An oil-soaked board lasts longer and is easier to clean.

What oil to use to impregnate the board? In separate discussions, this issue provokes a more abrupt “snowboard or skiing” holivar, people insist on using linseed, olive, even just sunflower oil; they suggest heating it, boiling it, immersing the board in oil for several days ... There is an easier, cheaper and odorless way: vaseline oil from a pharmacy. Vaseline oil is a mineral oil that does not decompose, does not emit an unpleasant odor, and does not harm a person. In addition, vaseline oil has a high ability to repel dirt. Whether or not to heat the oil before impregnating the board, I cannot say; I tried this and that and didn't notice any difference. The technology is the same: we dip a tampon twisted from a suitable piece of clean cloth into oil and carefully rub it into the board, wait forty minutes, repeat the procedure, and so on three or four times. Only in case you decide to heat the oil (any small kitchen utensil is suitable for this - vaseline oil will be washed off without a trace, without spoiling it), take care of your hands. Someone thinks that one-time processing is enough; someone insists that the board should be oiled again every three to four months.

Somehow, for clarity, I will take a photo of the board before and after impregnation. Oil not only protects the tree, but also "shows" its texture; many people think that this way the products look more beautiful.

In the lacquer and paint pavilions you can find special oils for impregnation kitchen boards (often based on organic tung oil), and they do an excellent job, but if you are going to make two or three boards for yourself or as a gift, it is easier to purchase a bottle of vaseline oil for fifty rubles than a specialized canister for eight hundred.

Pictured is a board I made for myself. It is minimalistic, there are no pens here. (because of cropping), no holes (because this cut has metal studs inside, and I was not sure that I would not stumble on them with a drill), no fittings (because I haven't come across any suitable yet)- but she's cute.

How to wash a cutting board

Wooden cutting boards should never be washed in. It is also impossible to soak a contaminated board in water for a long time, because. this can cause the wood to swell and crack after drying.

To avoid any problems with the cutting board, clean it immediately after use, do not let food lie on it for a long time. You can wash, well, or with dishwashing detergent, using a cloth or sponge. Do not use strong detergents.

How to clean a cutting board

If the cutting board is heavily soiled, then ordinary table vinegar can be used for disinfection. Should be processed wooden surface with a cloth soaked in vinegar and rinse it.
The same disinfectant effect can be obtained by using lemon juice.

By the way, at public catering establishments, according to sanitary and epidemiological rules, a log for chopping meat at the end of the day is cleaned and salt is added. It is better to refrain from cleaning the board with various cleaning powders and pastes, since there is no complete certainty that detergents will not remain in small cuts, and from there they will not get onto the processed products.

How and what to process a cutting board

To make the cutting wooden board look attractive, do not absorb various unpleasant odors and to prevent the growth of bacteria, it must be treated with mineral oil and wax.

Use to impregnate a cutting board vegetable oil not worth it. As the oil turns yellow over time, it acquires an unpleasant odor.

Ordinary vaseline oil is the mineral oil itself. Although it is produced from oil, it is completely harmless to human health. It is used internally as a medicine. Therefore, it is ideal for processing a cutting board.

To process the board, you need to prepare oil and a rag. Pour the oil on the board and rub the oil in a circular motion with a cloth. Don't be afraid to add extra oil. Wood will absorb as much as it needs. In this way, you will close or, one might say, seal the pores in the wood and bacteria, rods and any other bad things will not run amok in them. Also, such a coating will have waterproofing properties.

A new plank should be treated with oil twice, at intervals of several hours, so that the oil is well absorbed. Simply remove excess oil that has not been absorbed with a cloth or paper towel.

The recipe is not complicated. You need to take one part of wax and 4 parts of vaseline oil.

Heat the oil in a water bath and dissolve the wax chips in it. You can heat the mixture in the microwave to speed up the process.

Before the procedure, you can warm it up a little in the microwave (if it fits there). Then cover it on all sides with the prepared mixture with a brush or a clean cloth. Let the mixture soak in and dry.

Impregnation with a mixture differs from impregnation with just oil - it is considered more durable and strong, it can close not only pores, but small cracks and cuts. Such processing of a wooden plank must be repeated periodically - at least once every three months.

Wooden cutting boards are known for their durability and therefore find wide use in the kitchen during slicing and cooking. To prolong the life of such a cutting board, first of all, it must be prepared for use. oil impregnated. This will prevent damage to the board during use. In the future, the board must be cleaned regularly and re-oiled when the old impregnation wears out. In addition, during the operation of a wooden cutting board, some things should be avoided, for example, it is not recommended to cut meat on it, as this can lead to contamination of its surface with pathogenic bacteria.

Part 1

Preparing a wooden cutting board for use

    Purchase vaseline oil. To impregnate a wooden cutting board, it is best to take vaseline oil. It will prevent the wood from cracking over time. You can buy petroleum jelly online, at your local department store, or even at a pharmacy.

    Treat the board with oil. Before oiling a board, make sure it is completely clean. Wipe it off with a dry paper towel. Then apply a generous amount of oil to a paper towel. After that, gently wipe the surface of the board with a paper towel, spreading a thin layer of oil over it.

    Let the oil soak in. Put the board somewhere where it will not be disturbed, for example, in Kitchen Cabinet. Let the oil soak well into the surface of the wood, leaving the board alone overnight.

    • If you need to use the board on the same day, allow the oil to soak for at least a few hours.
  1. Remove excess oil. After soaking with oil, the board may appear greasy or sticky. If the board is sticky, take a paper towel and wipe off the excess oil.

    • After removing excess oil, the wooden cutting board will be ready for use.

Proper care of your cutting board
  1. Clean your cutting board after every use. Wooden cutting boards should never be put aside to be cleaned a little later. During this time, food residues and pathogenic organisms can penetrate the wood itself. Be sure to clean wooden board immediately after use. Always wash your board by hand only. Wooden cutting boards cannot be washed in the dishwasher.

    Dry your cutting board properly. Do not leave your cutting board to dry on its side in a dish rack. Instead, just lay it on a flat surface. If you place your cutting board on its side to dry, it will begin to flex in one direction over time.

    Reapply oil regularly. Check the board with water drops every few weeks. If water remains on the surface, then the board does not need to be oiled. If water is absorbed, it is necessary to treat the board with another layer of petroleum jelly, and then leave it to stand overnight so that the oil is absorbed.

Caring for your cutting board

    Do not wash your cutting board in the dishwasher. Wooden cutting boards are extremely sensitive to water. Under no circumstances should a wooden cutting board be placed in the dishwasher. It must be washed exclusively by hand.
