How to knock off the door from the outside. Upholstery the door with leather with your own hands: we make doors upholstered in leather with different materials. Advantages of front door upholstery

Upholstery of doors with dermantine (vinyl leather) backed with foam rubber, padding polyester or batting - the good old method of finishing entrance doors... The meaning of such a coating is noise insulation, thermal insulation, giving the door an aesthetic appearance. Dermantine upholstery is the cheapest way to insulate and decorate a door from all possible.

If from the inside the doors are decorated with decorative panels, including those made of solid wood and veneer, then metal with an anti-vandal coating is most often left outside, since any expensive upholstery can be damaged by vandals.

Meanwhile, due to the lack of insulation from the outside, both the heat-insulating and sound-insulating characteristics of the door suffer greatly.

It is even worse if the front door is wooden. True, it retains heat and does not conduct sound, but it suffers from atmospheric influences and from the same vandals.

If the door is old and looks ugly, upholstery with dermantine is a great way to give it an elegant look. Moreover, cheap, even if you do not do it yourself. And it is very easy to care for such a coating, you can simply wipe it with a wet cloth.

Vinyl leather comes in a variety of colors and textures are not necessarily standard smooth.

How to upholster with dermantine with your own hands

For upholstery, you will need a piece of dermantine, a piece of foam rubber or batting, decorative nails. It is better to take batting with a layer, but in principle any will do if you can smooth it along the canvas without lumps and irregularities. From the tool - a hammer, scissors and a screwdriver to remove the accessories.

Do-it-yourself upholstery of doors with dermantine is possible even by weight, but it is still more convenient if the door is in a horizontal position. To do this, you need to remove it from its hinges and put it on a table or on four stools. Unscrew all fittings.

How to properly upholster the door with dermantin

1. Cut a blank from dermantin along the length and width of the web with a minimum allowance of ten centimeters on all sides, as well as three strips for rollers fourteen centimeters wide (for three sides of the web, excluding the one facing the hinges).

Advice: if wooden doors are upholstered with dermantine, which opens inward, then a roller is also made for the hinge side. In this case, the workpiece is not cut as wide, the allowance for the looped side is the same as for the other sides. In this case, the rollers are nailed not to the door, but to the box.

3. We carry out insulation of doors with dermantine. To do this, you need to spread a blank of foam rubber or batting in the size of the canvas on the canvas. Cover the top with dermantine with allowances, the largest allowance is from the hinge side. Tuck the edges so that the edge of the insulation is inside the fold of the dermantine. Nail it down.

The edge of the panel should completely overlap the edges of the roller and the nails with which the roller is nailed. Upholstery starts from the lock, nails are spaced ten centimeters apart.

4. To make the door upholstery with dermantine (as in the photo) look beautiful, it is necessary to nail the panel with decorative nails over the entire area. In this form, it looks more beautiful, and the material will not move downward, forming an untidy fold at the bottom of the canvas.

When calculating the number and location of central nails, you need to proceed from an aesthetic criterion, but if your filler is not sheet, then it is better to plant nails more often.

Tip: when the front door is trimmed with dermantine, as an additional decorative element, you can use nylon thread, thin wire, fishing line. It stretches between the nails along the perimeter, and in the center it can be pulled in such a way that you get squares or rhombuses.

5. Cut the holes for the fittings and put them in place so that they overlap the cut edges.

6. Hang the door on the hinges.

7. Nail the allowance left on the looped side to the corresponding casing, bending over the edge beforehand.

A double door is upholstered in the same way. Only the central roller will be one, it should be located on the flap where the handle is.

Upholstery of doors with dermantine is also possible in the reverse order: first sheathe the canvas, and nail the rollers over it. But the porch is unlikely to benefit from such a sequence.

"Lazy" door trim with dermantine on the weight does not fundamentally differ from the classic one. This method can be used if the door is too heavy and it is energy-intensive to remove it. You won’t win anything else: handles, eyes, locks still have to screw together.

To completely remove drafts and improve the fit, it makes sense to do another simple procedure: buy a rubber self-adhesive seal and glue it around the perimeter of the box.

Some believe that upholstery of doors with dermantine is possible using not rubber, but polyethylene, which is put on tape. But this, firstly, is completely ugly, and secondly, polyethylene is a fragile material and will tear very quickly.

Upholstery of metal and wooden entrance doors with dermantine, insulation. The choice of materials for insulation, decorative upholstery options. Step by step instructions.

Reasons for the popularity of dermantin

Dermantin ( correct name- "leatherette"), invented and began to be used at the beginning of the XX century to replace natural leather. In terms of strength, durability, and other indicators it is comparable to it, but it costs 50-60% cheaper.

It is used in various fields: for upholstering furniture and car interiors, sewing clothes and shoes. In construction and repair it is used as a versatile material for upholstery of doors, usually entrance doors. Facing with dermantin is done on both wooden and metal doors.

Recently, the traditional term "dermantin" is giving way to the term "vinyl leather" or simply "vinyl".

Dermantin, used for upholstery of entrance doors, has such qualities as:

  • durability (resistance to changes in humidity and temperatures, exposure to sunlight);
  • ease of use (it is easy to care for it, ordinary soap is enough);
  • environmental friendliness (hypoallergenic, insensitive to microflora);
  • profitability (you can change the upholstery without noticeable costs and helpers);
  • aesthetics (wide choice colors, textures, the possibility of embossing).

The disadvantages of the material include:

  • a specific smell (almost imperceptible, but does not pass over time);
  • low resistance to fire (important if the door falls into the field of vision of hooligans);
  • impossibility of repair (damage to the dermantin cannot be repaired).

How to choose materials for door upholstery

In the overwhelming majority of cases, simultaneously with the upholstery of the front door with dermantin, it is insulated and the level of sound insulation is increased. Therefore, in addition to choosing a fabric for door trim, you should pay attention to the insulation material, which simultaneously plays the role of a noise absorber.

A door decorated with dermantine will retain a presentable look for a long time

In addition, visually dermantin is suitable to make the door beautiful and original, not only with the help of the material itself, but also through decoration: nails with caps matching the color of the upholstery, colored wire or cords. In this way, you can not only decorate the outer side of the door with traditional "rhombuses", but even depict a certain composition.

The choice of dermantin for door upholstery

Modern leatherette is conventionally divided in thickness into 3 groups: thin for haberdashery, thick for shoes, medium for upholstery. For a door, a thickness of 0.45–0.7 millimeters is suitable. Color, texture (gloss, embossing) - at the buyer's choice. As a rule, dermantin is sold in slices 1.2–1.5 meters wide, enough for a door. High-quality leatherette is slightly springy when stretched, painted evenly.

It is better to buy leatherette for upholstery in specialized stores, having consulted the seller.

The choice of material for door insulation

The range of materials for insulation and noise insulation of the door today is able to satisfy the most demanding taste. Some of them are especially popular.

  • Foamed polyurethane ( polyurethane foam). It is rarely used for insulating doors in residential premises, usually used for insulating garages, warehouses, industrial premises... Among the advantages are the ability to fill in cracks and cavities that do not lend themselves to traditional insulation and the simplicity of the method. The disadvantage is its price.

    Foamed polyurethane is expensive, but effective method insulation of doors and walls

  • Felt. It is made from natural wool, so the moth considers it as a breeding ground, mice and other rodents are pulled apart to insulate their burrows. The advantage is low cost compared to other heaters.

    Felt is cheap, but not the best way for insulating the front door

  • Batting. Like felt, it is made from natural materials, the same disadvantages.
  • Mineral wool. It accumulates moisture, deforms and falls into lumps. There is still controversy over the carcinogenicity of this material.
  • Styrofoam. Possibly the most popular door insulation. High moisture resistance, low thermal conductivity, high sound insulation, low cost. Disadvantages: fragility, high flammability with the release of toxic substances during open fire.

    Polyfoam is used for insulation almost more often than any other material

  • Foam rubber. Advantages: ease of installation, attractive price. Disadvantages: low moisture resistance and high flammability. Fragility (crumbles after 2-3 seasons).
  • Izolon (foamed polyethylene). Versatile material high performance, non-flammable. The foil layer provides the highest rate of heat and sound insulation in comparison with other heaters. The material is simply glued to the door tightly and covered with a second layer. Service life - up to 100 years. The disadvantages include the high cost.

    Izolon ensures heat retention by almost 100%

Sometimes multilayer insulation is used. For example, first isolon is fixed on the inner side of the door, foam rubber is placed on it. And since after a few years the foam rubber begins to "crumble", then the entire structure is covered with batting on top or similar material, and only then with dermantin.

Other cladding elements

To give the door individuality, the following are used: decorative (usually brass) wire, a strong cord that matches the color and texture, or ordinary fishing line. At the final stage of upholstery, they are passed through nails driven into the upholstery, decorating appearance doors. The nails are wrapped in turn in a given order, from one to the other, and then driven in completely.

With the help of a decorative screed on the door, you can depict a complex pattern

Decorative nails can be used to decorate the door with an image or even text.

Decorative (wallpaper) nails are matched to the color of the coating. Hats can be of any size, shape, color. You can pick up nails, the caps of which will be covered with the same material as the cover. Or, conversely, they will be in harmony with the details of the fittings: doorknob, locks, peephole.

The choice of decorative nails for upholstery doors is almost limitless.

Door cladding involves working not only with the door leaf. The door must be placed in doorway, decorated in the same style or in harmony with it. This applies to platbands and door slopes.

Preparation for trimming the front door with dermantin

Before starting work, it is worth making sure that the door is not skewed and that the seal is functioning effectively. If the door is skewed, then first you need to solve the problem, and then proceed with the sheathing. The seal is usually changed every 2-3 seasons (depending on how actively the door is used).

It will not be superfluous to prepare a sketch of the sheathing, in the form of a drawing with calculations or an approximate sketch of how the door should look.

Many before starting repairs do not take into account one important point... Namely: Murphy's basic law works always and everywhere. Let me remind you how it sounds. "If something can go wrong, it will definitely go wrong." Even if the door trim looks like a trifling matter, it will surely take twice as long as planned.

Tools for trimming the front door with dermantine:

  • scissors;
  • screwdrivers;
  • pliers;
  • hammer;
  • nails (for 1 m² of area you will need 50 g of construction nails, and 75 g of decorative ones);
  • glue, brush, roller;
  • roulette;
  • pencil;
  • wire (cord, fishing line);
  • Styrofoam;
  • polyurethane foam.

The list of tools does not include door paint, surface degreasing agents. Painting the door is desirable, but not required. You can add to it sandpaper (grinder) for cleaning metal doors from traces of corrosion and grinding wooden ones.

Standard items such as gloves or goggles are used for any work with wood or metal.

Simple ways of upholstery and door insulation

If you simplify the process as much as possible, you can do without rollers. Nevertheless, it is usually an integral part of an insulated door.

Roller - an element of insulation located at the edges door leaf or on the jambs of the door frame. Its task is to ensure the tightness of the structure at the points of contact between the ends of the door and the door frame. The future roller is a leatherette tape as long as the part of the door where it will be located, 10-15 centimeters wide. Remains of insulation or factory material sold in specialized stores are laid inside the tape.

Factory made polyethylene foam roller

Depending on whether the door opens outward or inward, the rollers are attached to the corresponding side. If the door opens inward, the rollers are attached to it from 4 sides, if outward - from above, below and from the side of the handle.

The roller can be attached with glue, construction stapler or nails

The edges of the leatherette tape are wrapped along, the resulting roller is attached with nails or glue. The distance with nails should be 10-15 centimeters. On the side of the handle, a gap is left for the lock.

Metal door, cladding outside

When cladding the outer side of the door, in addition to the aesthetic aspect, it is necessary to take into account the effect of aggressive environment... And not only the weather, but also aggressive people. Therefore, the cost of the outer door cladding must be weighed against the risks. Dermantin is not repaired, it can only be replaced completely.

I understand that if you do everything according to your mind, then the door for facing must be removed, placed on chairs or a table. Surely then it will be more convenient to work. But on personal experience I can say that on our staircases this is not very convenient. It's easier to do everything without removing the door from its hinges. As for me, this does not really complicate the work. This is me about the door of an ordinary city apartment. You can find a place at the dacha.

Metal door, lining from the inside

  1. Removable from the inside of the door decorative panel(usually it is a hardboard canvas).
  2. Wooden slats are screwed onto the inner edges (before this, the edges of the door leaf and the slats are drilled through and through).

    Wooden slats are necessary for installing insulation on the inner side of the door

  3. The slots between the slats and metal frame are filled with polyurethane foam.
  4. Pieces of insulation (foam, felt, foam, etc.) cut to size are inserted into the resulting cavities.

    Polyurethane foam is needed for sealing

  5. The resulting layer of insulation is covered with a sheet of plywood (hardboard). The location of the wooden slats is pre-marked on the sheet. The sheet is attached only to the slats in the middle of the door; dermantin will be brought under it from the sides.
  6. One more layer of insulation can be placed on top of the sheet, it depends on the outside temperature. In the northern regions, this is justified. Dermantin is placed on top of the second layer of insulation, its edges are tucked under a sheet of plywood (hardboard). Dermantin and plywood sheet screwed to wooden frame self-tapping screws, the heads of which are recessed in the sheet. Then you can hide these places with decorative nails.

    Professionals don't count batting ideal material but it is used often

  7. It is important that during nailing to the door leaf the dermantin is constantly stretched. Then it is nailed along the perimeter with the same decorative nails.
  8. Holes for fittings are cut (drilled) in the resulting structure.

Wooden door, cladding inside and outside

Differences from a metal door in exterior cladding not fundamental. The difference is that nails and construction stapler, not glue.

Fastening the dermantin with nails starts from the central vertical row(top to bottom), while the sheathing material must be constantly tensioned. After fixing the dermantin from above and below, both edges of the coating are nailed. Nails along the perimeter of the door leaf can be hidden under the rollers.

The principles of door trim from the inside are the same as for the exterior.

As of the summer of 2017, sheathe a wooden door in summer house at the dacha it cost me 1600 rubles. It could have been cheaper, but I took a set for 600 rubles: foam rubber 0.7x2.1 m, thickness 10 mm, dermantin 1.05x2.1 m, 50 nails and 10 meters of fishing line. Another 1,000 rubles - birch plywood 1.22x2.44, thickness 9 mm. We managed with a neighbor in about five hours (with smoke breaks, lunch and afternoon rest).

Decorative banner of the door

Facing the front door with dermantine allows you to decorate it additionally with a decorative banner. It can be done by stretching a wire or cord between decorative nails, or you can use furniture buttons. They consist of two parts - a threaded metal base and a decorative cap.

Together with the buttons, you will need one-sided frame profiles to stretch the leatherette fabric on the door. The profiles are cut according to the dimensions of the door leaf.

This type of upholstery is called "carriage coupler".

  1. Marking is made on the door leaf: using a square and a tape measure, the leaf is divided into 4 parts, the places where the buttons will be attached are marked.
  2. One-sided frame profiles are being prepared, into which dermantin will be filled.

    The door "carriage coupler" requires a large number Supplies

  3. On the places where the buttons will be located, it is applied assembly adhesive... The details of the threaded buttons are attached to it.
  4. The profiles are glued along the perimeter of the door.
  5. Holes are cut in the sheet of insulation and dermantine, corresponding to the buttons glued to the door leaf.

    The holes in the seals must match the markings on the door leaf

  6. The insulation is attached between the profiles, the dermantin is stretched from above. Its edges are tucked into the profiles along the perimeter of the door.
  7. The upper (decorative) parts of the buttons are screwed on top of the dermantin,

    Buttons must be fastened as securely as possible.

This upholstery option is suitable for both the inner and outer sides of the door.

Exterior of the door with a "carriage coupler"

This is a labor-intensive option and it is more expensive than simple door trim, therefore the door itself with a "carriage coupler" should be, if not new, then well preserved.

Video: a version of the "carriage coupler" of the door

This method involves planning the entire upholstery process and testing the method on a mock-up. That is, it is better for a beginner to simulate the entire sequence of actions on the "training ground" before upholstery: pieces of wood, insulation and leatherette.

Tiled door trim

Another option to decorate a door lined with dermantine is called tiled. The essence of the method is that the door is sheathed with pieces of leatherette, traditionally in the form of rhombuses) of the same size. In this case, you can use a coating of different colors.

  1. The door leaf with the help of a square and a tape measure or a ruler is marked into many rhombuses of the same size.
  2. In the corners of the rhombuses, the bases of the furniture buttons are attached.

    It is better to do the markup not with a felt-tip pen, but with a simple pencil

  3. A heater is placed on top with holes cut out in the places where the buttons are placed. The insulation is fixed with a construction stapler along the perimeter of the door leaf.

    The holes in the insulation should match as closely as possible with the markings of the door leaf

  4. Dermantin is cut into identical diamonds, slightly larger in size than those marked on the door. Excess material will be folded along the perimeter of the fragment. The corner of the rhombus that falls on the previous rhombus is cut out. The joints of the rhombuses correspond to the lower parts of the furniture buttons located on the door.

    This process will take much longer, but the result will be worth the effort.

  5. The fastening of the rhombuses starts from the edge of the door.
  6. The technology consists in the fact that the corners of the rhombus are fastened with a stapler, then a button is screwed on. The corners of the diamonds should be where the button holder protrudes. Rhombuses are placed on the insulation along the marking points, the cut corner should be on top. The lower corner is attached with a stapler, the upper part of the button is screwed onto the upper corner.

But if you still don't want to complicate the process, then quite decent results can be achieved without frills.

Video: a simple way to trim and insulate an entrance door

In conclusion, it can be added that dermantin has not just been one of the main materials for door cladding for many years. It is economical, easy to use when facing and insulating doors, and easy to replace if necessary.

Content:

Decoration of the door and the whole entrance group directly depends on the taste and preferences of the owners. Door manufacturers offer their customers whole catalogs of the most diverse design of this element. building structure... And for those who want to save a little, the option of self-upholstery of the door is suitable. suitable material... For example, artificial leather is very popular.

The word leatherette comes from the Greek "dermos" (skin) and means artificial material replacing natural leather. This is a relatively cheap coating that allows you to quickly add doors aesthetic appearance... People often call it "dermantin", although this name must be written and pronounced without the letter "n" - leatherette. This will make it easier to find, select and order upholstery online.

What is upholstery for?

The cladding material on the door plays an important role. It's not only wonderful way disguise old wood with a cracked surface, but also the ability to provide additional insulation from extraneous sounds and loss of room heat.

At the same time, the upholstery does not apply to events of particular complexity - literally any owner who decides to put the front door in order can cope with the work. Attract professional builders or repairmen do not have to, which saves the family budget.

What do you need to work?

In order for the cladding to be successful, it is necessary to stock up on the necessary materials and tools, and then simply follow a certain work algorithm.

You must purchase:

Artificial or natural leather. Dermatin will be cheaper, while visually and to the touch it differs little from natural material... The main thing is to purchase a quality sample from a trusted manufacturer. Leatherette can be picked up in any hardware store... Here we offer materials for every taste: different thickness, colors and textures. Standard width canvases from 1.1 to 1.4 meters. And it is recommended to add 20-30 cm to the hem to the suitable length of the cut. The dimensions are determined by simply measuring the door.

In addition, the upholstery is needed for the manufacture of rollers - strips up to 15 cm in width and length equal to the height of the door.

Material for sound insulation and insulation... The listed tasks can be easily solved with felt or sheet foam rubber. A thick synthetic winterizer used by seamstresses to make winter clothes is also suitable for work. The thickness of this layer is from 1 to 2.5 centimeters. You can stack the material in several layers.

Special nails with a decorative head. They can be metallic or have a covering made of a material that matches the color and texture. Quality products are made of copper alloy. The diameter of the head and the length of the nail depends on design solution... The type of the main material and the volume of the selected pattern are taken into account. Ideally, nails are matched to the color of the lock and doorknob.

Polymer glue is required to work with a metal door. The well-known universal "Moment" or "88" is perfect for this purpose.

Insulation in strips with a diameter of 1, 1.5 or 2 millimeters. Foam polyethylene or round foam rubber sold by the meter will do. Overlays are made from this material.

Of the tools you will need:

  • stapler and staples, which are used to temporarily fix materials;
  • construction knife and scissors for working with insulation and upholstery;
  • a screwdriver or screwdriver with different attachments (useful for dismantling the old coating);
  • small hammer;
  • nailer and dismantling pliers.

Preparatory stage

TO preparatory work the dismantling of the old coating applies.

First, the peephole, handles and locks are removed. Then, using a massive screwdriver and pliers, the old casing is dismantled. After that, all old staples, screws or nails are removed from the door leaf.

The door is removed from its hinges, placed on a table or workbench and cleaned of all fragments of the old coating. In the same position, new material can be filled. Fixed structures are put in order in an upright position.

Working with a wooden door

For good quality upholstery, it is performed from two sides at once - from the inside of the room and from the outside. Most often, wooden apartment doors open inward. This example will be considered.

Internal insulation requires the use of rollers. They are stuffed with strips of insulation and fastened in such a way as to cover the gaps between the door leaf and the frame.

Work order:

  1. Cutting of facing material and insulation, including strips, is carried out. It is recommended to make allowances for the cladding around the entire perimeter of 1.2-1.5 centimeters. Trims are used to form insulation strips installed along the contour (perimeter). The insulation should be 1-2 mm smaller than the door leaf!
  2. Then rollers with a seal are fixed around the perimeter using a stapler. It is recommended to start the installation from the upper right corner, then fasten the roller along the vertical cuts and the bottom. The lower part should not cling to the threshold. This will lead to rapid wear of the upholstery.
  3. For the patch lock, a cut of the appropriate size is made in the roller.
  4. After that, the insulation is laid, in which holes are immediately made for the peephole and locks.
  5. At the next stage, leatherette is stuffed (its edges are tucked up and placed under the insulation, and then fixed with brackets).
  6. With the help of studs, you can perform any decorative trim... For this, a preliminary marking is performed on the leatherette in the form of a suitable pattern. You can make decorative fasteners only around the perimeter in increments of 6-8 centimeters. The upholstery must be evenly tensioned!

External insulation begins with marking. The door closes, and a line of adhesion of the door frame is drawn with chalk along its outer canvas - the cladding must be filled up to this mark.

Work order:

  1. Insulation is stuffed with an indent of 1 cm from the line drawn with chalk.
  2. The upholstery is placed on top (the edges are folded under the layer of insulation, with the exception of the bottom - it remains free for now).
  3. Sealing rollers are fixed to the box, except for the bottom part. V finished form the roller should go on the door leaf by 1.5-2 centimeters and not close the keyhole.
  4. The bottom roller is attached directly to the door. It should not be too dense and large. The calculation is carried out in such a way that this element does not interfere with the normal functioning of the door.
  5. Next, the upholstery is pulled and fastened with nails. Then the peephole, handle and locks are installed.

Working with a metal door

Metal doors are usually installed as outward opening. This design fits very tightly to the box and does not require additional insulation in the form of rollers on the outside.

WITH outside insulation and leatherette is attached with polymer glue. The upholstery is folded 5-6 cm around the metal shelves of the structure. The adhesive is applied in stripes and each finish is pressed firmly against the surface. All excess leatherette around the perimeter is carefully cut off with a sharp knife - they will interfere with the closing of the door.

From the inside, the structure looks like a frame welded from corners and pipes. A metal sheet is attached to the frame. Here it is necessary to perform reliable insulation.

Work order:

  1. Timber strips are mounted to the profile using self-tapping screws.
  2. All gaps between the wood and the metal base are filled with polyurethane foam.
  3. Styrofoam sheets of suitable thickness are mounted in the prepared frame. All gaps between them are also blown out with polyurethane foam.
  4. Next, panels are prepared from plywood. With the help of glue, insulation and upholstery are attached to them (the leatherette is tucked on the wrong side and fixed with staples).
  5. The finished cladding is mounted to the wooden frame of the door using decorative nails.

If desired, plywood can be replaced with any suitable facing material - natural wood clapboard or laminated fiberboard.

No matter how trite it may sound, the front door is the face of the house! It not only serves practical purposes, but also allows guests to create an impression of your accommodation. Of course, the desire to sheathe the front door arises, as a rule, when it thermal insulation properties leave much to be desired. However, if you make such a repair well, you can transform the old door structure do it yourself what doorway will receive a new, unique look.

Where to begin?

First you need to take a tape measure and measure the opening. First of all, you need to measure the height of the door. To determine the width, measure the distance between the points of contact between the door and the frame. The depth of the door will be the width of the corners, it can also be determined using ordinary plasticine, a piece of which must be placed between the door leaf and the frame. By closing the door, you will receive an easy-to-measure impression. The data obtained must be recorded, according to them in the store they will help you calculate the required amount of material. It is better to prepare the opening in advance by dismantling the old casing with your own hands, removing the lock and other accessories.

What do you need?

The turn came to take care of the materials, taking into account their features:

Tools

Wooden and metal doors are finished a little differently, it also matters which side of the door (outside or inside) is to be finished. However, having bought materials for upholstery in a hardware store, do not forget to stock up on auxiliary tools and accessories, without which repair is impossible. Their list looks like this:

  • Corners;
  • Decorative strips;
  • Self-tapping screws;
  • Staples;
  • Furniture nails (including decorative ones);
  • Styrofoam;
  • Bars;
  • Glue (in the absence of special glue, "universal moment" is quite suitable);
  • Brush for applying glue;
  • Scissors;
  • Construction stapler;
  • Hammer;
  • Stationery knife.

Progress

In general terms, do-it-yourself upholstery repair is as follows: in the inner cavity of the doors along the perimeter and in the center they have wooden bar, which is attached with self-tapping screws. Next steps depend on the type of upholstery selected. TO inside the material is attracted from the outside with the help of long self-tapping screws; for upholstering the outer side of the door, self-tapping screws are mounted from the inside along the perimeter of the door leaf.

Repair and sheathing with thin-sheet material, such as fiberboard, has its own nuances - the sheets are simply glued in the middle, and along the perimeter of the canvas they are attached and closed with decorative strips in order to beautifully mask the fasteners. Thus, the doorway is very neat, even with your own hands.

To upholster the door with leatherette with your own hands, you need to measure the opening and cut the appropriate size of insulation. You can fix it with metal staples, furniture nails, and in some places with glue. Repair and replacement of upholstery is carried out, as a rule, using decorative studs. The edges of the material are folded and fixed well.

Sheathing with "clapboard" or wooden lath is another interesting option door upholstery. "Lining" is impregnated with all kinds of compounds that give it the quality of fire resistance, prevent rotting and increase moisture resistance. This finish is not inferior in practicality to PVC, but surpasses it in environmental friendliness. "Lining" can be painted or varnished, and it is not at all difficult to fix. Therefore, such a door finish is suitable not only for an apartment, but also decorates an opening in a private house.

Wooden door trim

Upholstery of wooden entrance doors involves the manufacture and fastening from the inside along the perimeter of the door leaf of a special roller, which closes the gaps between the leaf and the frame. Such a roller is made of upholstery material and insulation: the materials must be cut to the height and width of the door, attach them and fix them with a stapler so that insulating strips are obtained along the entire contour of the door.

Metal door trim

An iron door can be insulated using beams, making a frame from them around the perimeter of the door using self-tapping screws. The holes for fastening the panels must be made in accordance with the selected panels - they have instructions that describe the features of their fastening. The holes for the peephole, the handle and the lock are calculated and cut out independently. Insulation is inserted into the niches between the bars and fixed with glue. The repair will be completed by gluing the decorative corner to the iron door along the perimeter - it will cover the edges of the panels.

Thus, if the door has lost its functional properties or appearance, do not rush to resort to replacing it, because it is quite possible to knock down an inexpensive iron or old wooden front door, and everyone can increase its service life with their own hands.

Back in ancient times, people invented a device that was blocking their home. Initially, the front door was needed to protect from cold, rain and wild animals. But over time, the function of the door has expanded slightly, and today a good front door not only performs the function of protection, but also matches the interior of an apartment or house.

Tidying up the front door with your own hands using dermantine is not such a difficult task, especially since it is a very affordable material.

Peculiarities

Any, even very old door can be transformed by upholstery with dermantin. This material has its own characteristics and advantages.

The word "dermantin" has a foreign origin. Literal translation means "material imitating skin", since the root of this word is "dermis", which in Latin means "skin". The letter "n" crept into it by accident to make the pronunciation more euphonious. But this phonetic distortion does not change its properties at all, and most people know this material precisely in this sound.

The basis of leatherette is nitrocellulose coated cotton fabric applied to one or both sides of the material. Dermatin has many features, thanks to which it is most often chosen as an upholstery material.

First of all, it has a fairly long service life. The presentable appearance and properties of this upholstery material remain unchanged for 10 years.

Leatherette is a very moisture resistant material. Due to its composition, it does not absorb moisture at all, so heaters and others waterproofing materials used together with leatherette as upholstery, do not change their properties.

Dermatin is not subject to decay processes. Its composition prevents the multiplication of various microorganisms. Also, it does not fade in the sun, as it is resistant to UV rays. This quality allows the upholstery of doors located not only in closed rooms, but also installed on open areas without fear of change in appearance.

This material is resistant to temperature extremes. At sub-zero temperature neither its properties nor its appearance change. To clean the surface of this material, no specialized products are required, ordinary soap and water are enough. But it is worth noting that it is quite stable when exposed to many cleansers. Do not forget that upholstery of doors with dermantine solves the problem of heat and sound insulation of the room.

Pattern options

On the surface of a door upholstered with leatherette, various patterns are often made. To do this, use special decorative nails and cords made of the same material as the upholstery itself. In order to make any drawing, you must first put marks on the surface in the right places, and only then nail the carnations. Thanks to point punching, outlines appear on the surface of the upholstered door, which form the pattern. In addition to decorative nails, cords are often used, they are clamped with nails and pulled between them, as a result of which a textured pattern is formed.

Most often, drawings can be made in the form of rhombuses, which can have different sizes and location. Diamonds of the same size can be centered or distributed over the entire surface of the door. Sometimes diamonds of different sizes are combined in the drawing.

On the door, upholstered with leatherette, you can apply a pattern not only in the form of rhombuses, but also in the form of others geometric shapes: circles, rectangles, squares.

You can decorate the door without using cords. To do this, the carnations are stuffed onto the surface of the canvas in a planned order. There can be a small number or a lot of them, they can be located both along the perimeter of the door and in the center of the structure.

Decorating iron door is carried out before the door upholstery. Leatherette and insulation are connected with special buttons in the right places. Today, you can purchase a ready-made set of special devices for decorating the door in the store. With its help, an unusual and beautiful pattern can be created on the door leaf, however, the cost of such a set is slightly higher than ordinary nails and a cord made of material residues.

How to sew with your own hands?

In order to properly upholster the door with your own hands, you first need to purchase the necessary material and tools. There are two types of doors - they are either metal or wooden structures. Depending on their type, is selected the right amount material. In order not to be mistaken with the footage, you need to first measure the length and width of the door leaf and based on the values obtained, acquire material. Wooden structures are upholstered with a piece of leatherette that does not exceed the area of the door leaf by more than 15 cm on each side. And for metal doors a margin of 10 cm is sufficient.

For upholstery wooden door, in addition to covering the main surface, as a rule, additional elements such as rollers are used. They are nailed along the perimeter of the door leaf and serve not only additional element decor, but also cover the gaps between the canvas and the box. As a rule, these strips are prepared in advance from leatherette and insulating material... The width of the leatherette strips varies between 10-15 cm, and the length depends on the size of the door. The strips of insulating material should be slightly narrower (8-10 cm).

When choosing a heater, you need to take into account not only the price, but also the service life of the material. The most common material is foam rubber. It is affordable, and its service life ranges from 13-15 years. You can also choose batting, which has a slightly higher cost compared to foam rubber. Its service life does not exceed 30 years and, in addition, it has significant weight, therefore, it can significantly increase the weight of the door leaf structure.

The most modern insulation is an isolontape. Service juice of this material is in the range of 60-75 years. Isolontape is often used in conjunction with foam rubber. Thanks to this combination, the front door protects the room even better from the penetration of noise and cold, and also when decorating it, a beautiful embossed surface is formed.

In addition to materials, you need to prepare and tools. Scissors are used to cut material. Sharp knife will be needed to remove excess insulating materials. Screwdrivers and pliers will be needed in the process of dismantling locks and other work.

Nails are required to attach the material to wooden structure... Using a stapler, the door is sheathed with insulating material. Glue is required to bond the metal surface with insulation and leatherette. With the help of decorative nails, a pattern will be applied to the surface.

Step by step guide

In the presence of necessary materials and tools, you can start the process itself. Regardless of the type of door, you need to carry out some additional activities. As a rule, for convenience, the door leaf is removed from the hinges, but if you experienced master, the door can be reconstructed without removing it. Then the lock and the peephole are dismantled. Next, the door is cleaned of the old coating (if it was present there). Now you can start reconstructing the canvas.

Algorithm for lining the inner side:

  • First, you need to attach the prepared strips for rollers to the door leaf. To do this, they are applied face down and fixed on all sides of the canvas with a stapler. If there is a patch lock in the door, then you need to nail it from its location.
  • If the design provides for a mortise version, then you need to start from the upper corner (from the side of the hinges). The protrusion of the stripes should be no more than 4 cm.

  • Prepared strips of foam rubber are fixed on the surface of the canvas. Now you need to tuck the edges of the leatherette and strengthen it on the surface. The roller should not protrude more than 3 cm beyond the edge of the door.
  • Then you need to cut out foam rubber or other insulating material. It should fit well between the rollers, the indent on each side is 1 cm.
  • Now, using a stapler, we attach the insulation material to the front door.

  • We nail the prepared piece of leatherette. To do this, tuck its edges by about 5-6 cm and attach to the surface of the door. The rolled-up edges should go slightly over the roller. A decorative nail must be nailed down, no more than 7 mm away from the edge. In the same way, we nail the second nail in the other upper corner, after pulling the canvas.
  • Next, we nail nails in the upper part of the canvas in 10-12 cm increments, gradually going down one side. We do the same with the second side and the bottom of the door leaf.
  • After fixing the last nail around the perimeter, you can start decorating the surface.
  • The final step is to install the locks and handles.

Stages of finishing the outside:

  • First, close the door tightly and, depending on the location of the door frame, draw a projection on the door surface. This must be done so as not to go beyond the drawn line when covering the surface.
  • Now you can attach the roller to the bottom of the door leaf. It should fit snugly against the threshold when the door is closed.
  • Then rollers should be made for the left, right and upper parts, but they need to be fixed on door frame... On the side where the hinges are located, it is installed flush with the jamb, and in the opposite and upper part it must be pulled out a few mm (depending on the slots).
  • Now you can install and secure the main canvases.

Metal door upholstery method:

  • First you need to apply glue to the door leaf.
  • Then you need to attach a piece of insulating material to the prepared surface and press down. We cut off the excess material with a knife, not forgetting to cut holes for the lock, handle and eyelet.
  • Now we put glue on the foam rubber and glue the leatherette, not forgetting to tuck the edges of the material.

Fitting the front door yourself is not such a difficult task, the main thing is to take into account all the nuances associated with the design of the canvas.

How to paint?

Over time, a door lined with leatherette can lose its attractive appearance. If the resulting abrasions are of a local nature and there are not so many of them, then it makes no sense to change the leatherette, it can be restored with the help of special paints.
