MDF paint is a quick way to transform your interior. Painting of facades mdf Primer film for mdf for painting

- it is a laborious business, and if all technologies are observed, it will last up to 10 days. But if you are scared off by the price of painting MDF, you can try to paint the MDF with your own hands. How and how to paint MDF at home?

To paint MDF at home, you will need a putty, a primer, paint itself (paintwork material - paintwork materials), patina and acrylic lacquer(for matt surfaces) or glossy varnish and polishing pastes (for glossy surfaces).

The process of painting MDF includes several stages, with all stages alternating with drying and grinding.

Preparing MDF for painting

Before painting the MDF, it is necessary to prepare the surface of the slab itself. What preparation includes MDF boards for painting:

1)Grinding MDF to prepare the slab surface for priming. Thanks to grinding with a grain of 120-240, firstly, surface irregularities will be ground, and secondly, a layer of paraffin will be ground off, which would prevent the primer and paint from absorbing into the wood. On difficult bends, it is better to grind the MDF with an emery sponge, or even refuse to grind thin cutters at the initial stages. Still, MDF is a rather fragile material, it is better not to crawl around it once again.

2) Before painting MDF, you need to make sure that the material does not need to be putty, for example, you need large dents, edges, or gaps between parts if the product consists of several elements. For this purpose, acrylic putty is best suited - it is quite elastic and will not crack over time. After drying, its remnants are carefully removed, the MDF surface for painting is sanded with sandpaper.

3)Priming MDF before painting... As a rule, MDF is primed twice before painting in order to impart ideal smoothness to the surface of the slab. At the first stage of the MDF primer, the soil-insulator is sprayed with a spray gun (nozzle - from 1.6 to 2.4 millimeters, 2-4 atm.) At the rate of 90-100 grams / "square". This primer should prevent the pile of the MDF board from rising and the absorption of paint or varnish: the primer gets into the loose areas of the MDF, and after application the paint will not sag. After the primer has dried, the surface is sanded with a sandpaper or an emery sponge, but very carefully - a thin layer of soil can be easily wiped down to the MDF board.

The second primer is applied with a white polyurethane primer at a minimum of 150 grams / square. A layer of soil should be allowed to dry - 12-24 hours, after which it should be sanded. If you see primer pellets on the skin, it means that it is not dry yet.

How can MDF be primed before painting? A mixture of your chosen paintwork materials for painting with the addition of water. For example: 25% water-based enamel, 25% varnish, 50% water.

Talking about general recommendations on the MDF primer, then it is carried out with a spray gun, starting with the most complex elements of the cutters, then moving on to the edge, and then to the rest of the surface. First, the part is covered along, then across, with an overlap.

Painting MDF

MDF painting technology is roughly the same as priming technology. It is easiest to paint MDF with a spray gun (nozzle - 1.6-2 millimeters, pressure - 2-4 atm.), But in the absence of a roller or brush will do. Painting parameters will directly depend on a specific paintwork material: the interval of application of layers, their number, recommended air pressure and nozzle diameter, paint consumption (60-200 grams / "square"), spray method. This information can be read in the instructions.

How to paint MDF? Polyurethane, water-based enamels are best suited for painting MDF - they do not have a pungent odor, dry quickly, are relatively safe, and are resistant to ultraviolet radiation. Although you can take alkyd, acrylic or oil paints.

If there are paint smudges on the painted surface, they should be removed with a clerical knife; when small debris, villi, midges get in, they are removed immediately with a small sharp object. Irregularities are carefully sanded after drying. By the way, sanding after applying all layers of paintwork materials will be easier - enamel or paint lay down in a thick layer and level the surface.

When you are behind, it is time to apply either varnish (to give the surface a gloss) or patina (to give texture to matte surfaces).

Covering MDF patina

As a rule, MDF facades with complex cutters are patinated to emphasize their texture. The patina composition is applied directly to the dried paint layer using the same spray gun, brush, roller, swab, etc. After the patina on MDF dries, the surface is sanded again, the patina is covered with a layer of matt acrylic varnish at the rate of about 150 grams / "square" and dried for 24 hours. Painting of MDF is over.

Varnishing MDF to a glossy sheen

Glossy varnish is applied to painted MDF in two layers at intervals according to the instructions, and at the rate of 130-150 grams / "square". The lacquered MDF is dried for at least a day, after which the final grinding is started, going from coarser to finer grain size. So that the lacquer particles do not overheat and do not roll during sanding, the painted MDF surface is sprayed with water from time to time. In another week, the MDF will be ready for final polishing. MDF with a grinder, abrasive and non-abrasive pastes.

So, if you are still wondering: "Is it possible to paint MDF," we answer - it is possible, but difficult. Moreover, if you are a novice painter, or your MDF is of poor quality, or there is little time for all these adherence to the drying time. In any case, we told you how to paint MDF with your own hands, and to do this yourself or to trust the professionals - the choice is yours.

We bring to your attention a video on how MDF painting is done by professionals.

Tatiana Kuzmenko, member of the editorial board

Furniture fronts, doors and other MDF products can be painted. But when working, inexperienced craftsmen are faced with various difficulties, including the difficulty in obtaining smooth surface streak-free, strong material absorbency and others. We will reveal the specifics of choosing paints for MDF boards.

Can MDF be painted?

Facades, furniture boards, panels, door cladding and other MDF products are in great demand due to their characteristics. This is the only material among analogues that can be processed by everyone. possible ways: milling, figured cutting, lamination, lamination, painting. Let us dwell on the latter in more detail.

Painting MDF is a complex process and it begins with the choice of the main material - paintwork materials. If you want to get perfect flat surface with a semi-matte or glossy sheen, then simple oil paint PF-115 even from an expensive foreign manufacturer is not enough. An inexperienced master will face several problems at once:

It turns out that you can't paint MDF? Our answer is that it is possible, but it is necessary to use a whole range of tools, or, in the language of professionals, to apply special program paints and varnishes, which include:

  • There are several types of primers: barrier primers or insulators with a pore-filling effect, elastic and easily sandable multicomponent compounds, basic pigmented compositions with a solids content of at least 50%.
  • Paint with high hiding power, thixotropy, and after polymerization - wear resistance and durability.
  • To create a smooth surface with a glossy / semi-matt shine: varnish or polishing kits (paste + fluff disc for polishing).

What paints are suitable for MDF

The easiest way to paint laminated boards. This is the surface of finished furniture facades and doors, wall and ceiling panels. The film acts as a primer and leveling layer. The following types of paintwork materials are suitable:

  • Enamels based on alkyd, alkyd-urethane or oil based(Novbythim, Dyo, Tikkurilla)

Alkyd enamels Tikkurila

These are household compounds based on synthetic oils or polymer resins. They belong to the category of universal, that is, they can be used for indoor and outdoor work, have good adhesion to most materials: metal, wood, glass, chipboard, MDF, OSB, etc.

After curing, a dense and durable film is formed, the advantages of which are high hiding power, resistance to mechanical and chemical influences, abrasives, water.

Of the minuses, we note a sharp chemical smell, which negatively affects human health, as well as a huge number of low-quality products on the shelves of stores and markets.

  • Enamels based on polyurethane resins (Elakor, Ive, Teknos)

One- and two-component complex formulations with increased wear resistance and incredible durability - over 20 years. These are premium class products with a corresponding price (from 400 rubles / kg). Most often these paints are used by professional painters.

  • Acrylic enamels (KrasKo, Tex, Belinka)

Compositions based on water-borne acrylate or latex copolymers are considered the safest and are recommended for use in residential and children's premises. Painting of facades, doors and panels is easiest to carry out with compositions produced in the form of aerosols. The resulting coating is weakly resistant to abrasives and mechanical damage, while perfectly protects the surface from water and temperature extremes.

  • Special enamels for furniture or nitro paints of the NT series (Lacra, Sadolin, Alpina)

This category includes a series of highly specialized compounds designed for woodworking, chipboard and MDF. They are characterized by high hiding power, excellent adhesion, short drying time and long service life. Recommended only for internal use, since the film has a low coefficient of frost resistance.

MDF panels used for the production of furniture facades, door and wall claddings are more difficult to paint due to the high absorbency of the material and the need for grinding. In addition, when working with a brush, roller or spray gun, the pile rises strongly, due to which the surface turns out to be uneven, rough.

And if for priming you can choose highly specialized porous filling elastic compounds that dry quickly and are easy to sand, then the following varieties are suitable as paints:

  • Household aerosol acrylics

They give a fairly smooth glossy surface, but at least 4 layers are required. On milled bevels of doors and sharp corners of furniture, paint will wear off quickly, so it is recommended to apply a wear-resistant alkyd or PU varnish over the coating.

  • Professional two-component polyurethane enamels (Milesi, Ilva, Renner)

They consist of a base compound and a hardener. They can be tinted by hand or by machine in over 2000 shades. It is used mainly in production, less often at home.

Since the components are poisonous to humans, it is recommended to paint furniture, facades on outdoors using personal protective equipment (glasses, mask, gloves).

  • Specialized enamels for MDF (Palina Coating, Galamix)

These are complex formulations based on polyurethane or urethane acrylic base... Applied to the surface of furniture or doors with a spray or brush, the resulting coating has excellent resistance to mechanical, chemical and abrasive influences, practically does not fade over time.

  • Automotive enamels (Duxone, Jet, Colomics)

These compounds are highly specialized and are designed to work on metal. Paints have undeniable advantages: excellent adhesion to any materials, thixotropy, abrasion, water and chemical resistance, fast polymerization. In addition, the coating formed can withstand temperatures from -40 ° C to +100 ° C. Car enamels can be used to paint facades and other elements of furniture, doors. Finished wall panels can be painted without prior preparation.

  • Polymer powder paint for wood and MDF (Reka, Pulver)

The composition was originally produced for industrial painting of metal and wood products, but in the past few years, small-volume packaging for household use has appeared on the market. In addition to the polymer compound, you will also need special equipment for its application.

Powder paint first melts at temperatures above 120 ° C, and then adheres to the substrate. For MDF facades, a series of low-temperature or ultraviolet-curing compositions is produced. Heating is carried out for several minutes, then the coating is applied to the horizontally located material and polymerized.

Powder paint allows you to obtain a wear-resistant surface with various decorative effects: patina, shagreen, textured metallic, leather, silk and much more. The technology was not widely used in everyday life due to the complexity of its application and high cost materials.

The purpose of staining is to get beautiful surface that will not be afraid of water, scratches or stains. If you need to paint wall panels, an acrylic spray is best. Furniture facades of a kitchen set and doors must be resistant to temperature extremes and various chemically aggressive substances (household chemicals, products), therefore, polyurethane, automotive wear-resistant compounds or polymer powder paint are better suited for them. But furniture for the living room, nursery or bedroom can be covered with furniture enamels that do not wear out over time and can be easily updated if necessary.

MDF is widespread in the furniture industry primarily because of its low cost. Most often, this material is pasted over with laminated film. However, there are situations when it becomes necessary to stain it. We will consider the features of this process further.

Facades for painting MDF: features and benefits of application

Mass production of facades from MDF led to their widespread popularity among the population. This material made from wood fibers that are pressed under the influence high temperature... MDF boards have increased strength, which is ensured good connection fibers among themselves.

Most often, this material is used for the manufacture of furniture facades, which cover the main part of the furniture and prevent it from getting into it. different kinds substances.

If we compare MDF facades with other types of furniture, then they, in comparison with them, have a large number of advantages. First of all, it is resistance to mechanical damage, a long period of operation,

In addition, the facade of their MDF is resistant to vaporization and high humidity... In the process of making the plates, no synthetic substances are used that are harmful to the human body. Also, from MDF boards, you can make various furniture, which has almost any shape and configuration.

Among advantages of MDF facades are noted:

  • resistance to moisture;
  • resistance to high and low temperatures;
  • high strength indicators;
  • manufacturability and ease of use;
  • affordable cost;
  • resistance to mold and mildew.

DIY painting of kitchen facades from MDF

It is preferable to paint the MDF boards indoors, the total area of which is more than 40 square meters. In addition, there must be a separate place for painting parts, as well as an area where they will be polished. The optimum temperature for work is 19-20 degrees Celsius.

The painting chamber should be equipped with exhaust device, which helps to get rid of the smell of paint and a table that ensures the rotation of the part in the desired direction. It is necessary to equip racks in the drying chamber, and a vacuum cleaner in the grinding chamber.

In order to cover the facade with varnish or paint, you will need a pneumatic spray gun and a compressor that connects to it to supply required pressure... An angle grinder is used to polish the finished product.

Before choosing plates for painting, you should pay attention to their quality. Inspect the stove for lint; it is preferable to choose a material in which the lint is not raised. The milling is carried out at the maximum speed of the device. Thus, the surface of the slab will remain as smooth as possible. Please note that after preparation, the plates are particularly fragile, so do not place heavy or sharp objects on them, there is a risk of material deformation.

In order to hide the corners from damage, they should be processed with special edge cutters. Please note that the parts should be sanded around the entire perimeter to remove the protective wax layer, which will prevent the paint from adhering to the surface. For these purposes, it is preferable to use an eccentric sander. For difficult areas, it is recommended to use an emery pad.

If the MDF facade contains connections between individual slabs, between which there are small gaps, then to remove them, you should use a vapor filling soil. When it dries, the surface is sanded sandpaper.

Before you start painting MDF facades with your own hands, you must apply a layer of primer. On the one hand, it will improve the adhesion of paint to the surface, and on the other hand, it will reduce paint consumption. At the beginning, you should cover complex relief areas. Next, the end sections and the main surface are primed. The work is carried out using a spray gun. First, make longitudinal movements, and then transverse ones. In the process of covering the facade, there is a 50% overlay of one layer on the second. This technology is used for both soil coating and painting of the MDF facade.

If it is necessary to paint both sides of the facade, first work is carried out inside, and then, after the inside has dried, outside.

The procedure for priming the MDF facade consists of two processes, which we will consider below:

1. Application of a primer acting as an insulator. This substance protects the surface from excessive paint absorption and prevents the build-up of lint on the boards. When the primer is dry, sanding the surface begins with an emery sponge. However, all work is carried out carefully so as not to erase the soil from the slab.

2. The second stage is painting with a primer with a polyurethane base. After applying this material, the surface becomes white... Drying time for this layer is 10 to 24 hours. Then the surface is sanded again and prepared for painting.

Painting of MDF facades, technology and principle of execution

To paint the facades, use a spray gun. In relation to the type of paint, the diameter of the nozzle, the type and direction of movement of the paint, the method and layers of spraying are determined. Therefore, before painting, you should read the instructions for use of the paint.

For the use of complex formulations, certain components should be pre-mixed in the right amount... Also, make sure the paint thickness is comparable to the spray gun nozzle to avoid problems when painting facades.

Please note that in no case should work be carried out outdoors or indoors with open window to prevent contamination of the surface with dust, hair and other fine substances. To remove them, use tweezers or a needle. In order to get rid of some smudges, use a clerical knife, and clean the place of removal with a sandpaper.

If the facade has a matte shade and at the same time complex milling is performed, then work is performed to patinate it. No prior primer is required to apply this composition. Patination is carried out over the paint; a roller, brush, spray gun or sponge is used to complete the work.

To remove excess, use abrasive materials. After that, the surface is covered with a transparent varnish, which protects the facade from mechanical stress.

How to paint the facade after paint

After applying paint to the MDF facade, it should be treated with compositions that improve appearance the finished coating and its scratch resistance. At the same time, the paint acquires a deeper shade, becomes fresher. For these purposes, an acrylic-based varnish with a gloss effect is used.

This composition must be applied in at least two layers. In this case, the application of the second layer is carried out only after the first one has completely dried. After covering the facade with varnish, it is transported to drying chamber... After two days, the products are polished. After a week after varnishing, the MDF facade is polished and prepared for use.

To grind the finished product, use a grinder. In the process of sanding, you should spray water on the slabs with a spray gun, thus, the facade will cool and the varnish will not roll off the surface. At the end of the sanding process, the surface has a uniform matte texture.

Finishing work - polishing the MDF facade. For these purposes, it is recommended to use an angle grinder, which has a foam rubber wheel and special tool in the form of an abrasive paste. First, the composition covers the entire surface of the facade, then the machine grinds it evenly over the slab. The product is polished at high speeds of the device. Please note that the movements are horizontal at first, and then vertical. Moisten the polishing wheel periodically to prevent overheating. For the surface to have a deep color, we recommend applying furniture wax to the circle.

To ensure the finishing of the product, use a paste with a non-abrasive base. Thus, the surface of the MDF facade will look like a mirror. Next, the facade is packed in foamed polyethylene and corrugated cardboard boxes. This material provides reliable protection facade from mechanical damage, scratches.

Facade painting MDF gloss: furniture restoration

Since MDF furniture is quite often used for the arrangement of apartments, houses and office premises, during operation, it loses its attractive appearance and needs restoration. In addition, another reason for staining MDF facades is a change in the interior of the room, in which the old facade simply does not fit in color.

Painting the MDF facade does not require special skills in working with special equipment, you just need to follow the instructions below.

Slabs based on wood fibers perfectly combine with paint, this is due to the following reasons:

  • since the slab is homogeneous, natural and monolithic, it is not required to prepare it additional work to level the material, it is enough to remove the old paint, if any, and polish the surface;
  • since MDF is resistant to mechanical stress, using paint on its surface, you can make different textured elements.

Stages of painting facades from MDF:

  • preparatory work;
  • applying a primer;
  • determining the type of paint;
  • staining.

In order to paint paneled MDF facades, you will need:

  • tools for applying paint;
  • masking tape;
  • a hair dryer, with which the facade will be heated;
  • protective gloves;
  • soil composition;
  • sandpaper.

To begin with, all the fittings are removed from the furniture facade. Use a construction hairdryer to remove old paint. Please note that manual removal of paint can damage the surface and reduce the aesthetics of its appearance. If there are small mechanical defects on the slabs, you should get rid of them by applying a putty designed for working with wooden surfaces. Finishes the surface treatment with sandpaper.

When choosing a primer, it is best to become on compounds intended for working with wood. The application of the primer is carried out both with a brush, and with a roller or spray gun. The minimum drying time for the primer is 24 hours.

Paint for MDF facades is selected based on the desired staining effect. Most the best option paints for painting MDF facades - autoenamel. Such compositions differ high durability before moisture, good strength characteristics and stability before changing temperature regime... There are a huge number of car enamel colors, which differ in depth, shade or type of surface obtained. Therefore, choosing the right paint, your facade will easily fit into any interior style.

After the primer has dried, paint is applied to the surface of the facade. If there are areas on the facade that will not be painted, then they are glued using masking tape. Apply paint either longitudinally or transversely. Use a spray gun to distribute the paint evenly on the surface. As a result, a coating is obtained with either a glossy or matte shade.

There is another option for painting MDF facades; glizal is used for these purposes. It is bought in hardware stores. It is possible to dilute the glaze with ordinary paint, in which case, after staining, the surface acquires an interesting texture. First dilute a small amount of the compound and apply the paint to the paper surface, if satisfactory, thin all the paint.

For glaze staining, you should prepare a tool with which the paint will be applied and wear gloves that protect your hands from getting the composition on the skin. In addition, a sponge is required, plastic bag and two brushes - one small and the other large. Apply glaze to the façade in an even but thick enough layer. Next, use a sponge, gradually applying it to the facade. In relation to the pores on the sponge, the surface will be covered with small bubbles. If you want to get lines on the surface of the facade, use a crumpled cellophane bag. In this case, the effect will be more pronounced. A small brush will also help create abstract elements. It is possible to combine different effects with each other, it all depends on your preferences and imagination. Please note that after the glaze has dried, nothing should be corrected, since the surface has acquired an unpresentable appearance. To fix the effect, it is recommended to cover the MDF facade with varnish.

Painting of MDF facades video:

In the PVC film, one should not forget about alternative directions for the development of the enterprise, for example, such as painting of MDF facades. The situation on the furniture market is constantly changing and consumer demands do not remain unchanged. Therefore, sooner or later, manufacturers of MDF furniture may have a question of how to paint the MDF facade, what equipment and materials will be required and what technology for painting MDF facades is best suited for this particular enterprise.

Equipment for painting MDF facades

To paint the facades of MDF, you will need a room with an area of at least about 40 sq. m with a separate chamber for painting, a place for grinding parts, for drying and storing blanks and holding finished products. The room must be heated with a temperature of at least 20 degrees. The painting chamber should be suitably equipped with a hood and preferably a rotating table, a drying room with racks, a place for grinding with powerful vacuum cleaners.

To apply paintwork materials and primers, you will need a pneumatic spray gun with a nozzle from 1.5 to 2 mm and a compressor with a receiver of 80-100 liters to it. For grinding parts, you need an eccentric vibration sander, and for polishing, an angle grinder (grinder) with the appropriate attachments.

Preparing MDF for painting

At choosing MDF for painting, special attention should be paid to the quality of the board, primarily the raising of the pile during processing and the presence of embossing from the molds used in its manufacture.

Milling of MDF facades should be carried out at the maximum possible speed of the tool in order to reduce the likelihood of raising the pile. Since the paint and varnish layer of the finished MDF facade remains very fragile, you should avoid leaving sharp corners on the parts, which can be knocked down if handled carelessly. To do this, they are processed with an edge mill with a radius 2-3 mm.

Grinding of the details of the MDF facades must be performed over the entire plane in order to remove the upper protective layer wax. For this, an eccentric sander with sandpaper P 180-240 is used. Complex bends of milling MDF facades are easiest to process with an emery sponge.

If it is planned to paint MDF facades consisting of several component parts, the cracks formed at the joints should be pre-filled with a filling primer. After complete drying, its remains should be carefully removed with a rag or spatula, and then cleaned with P240-320 emery cloth.

Priming of MDF facades for painting

First of all, complex reliefs of milling or overlay elements of the surface of the MDF facade are primed. Then the edge of the part is primed. Further, the entire plane of the MDF facade is covered with soil. The movement of the pistol is carried out first along and then across the part. Each subsequent layer should be overlapped by 50% on the previous one. All subsequent stages of applying primers, paints and varnishes are carried out in a similar way.

If you want to paint furniture facade MDF on both sides, then preliminary paintwork is applied to inner side facade. After it dries, you can cover the front side.

As a rule, priming of MDF facades for painting is carried out in 2 stages. At the first stage, using a spray gun, a layer of insulating soil (80-100 g / sq. M) is applied, which should provide protection against the absorption of subsequent layers of paintwork and raising the pile. After complete drying, sanding is performed with an emery sponge or sandpaper P320-400. It is important not to wipe the soil layer down to the MDF during active sanding.

At the second stage, before painting the MDF facade, a layer of white polyurethane primer 150-200 g / sq. Is applied. m. The drying time of this layer can last from 8-10 to 24 hours, depending on the composition of paintwork materials used. After drying, sanding is carried out with P320-400 sandpaper. Milling bends and hard-to-reach areas of the MDF facade are sanded with an abrasive material S cotch-brite.

Painting of MDF facades

Painting of MDF facades is carried out using a spray gun with a paint (enamel) consumption of 60 to 200 g / sq. m. Setting the nozzle diameter, air pressure, spray method, number of coats and the interval of their application, as a rule, depend on the type of paint used. Therefore, before painting the MDF facade with this or that paint (enamel), you should carefully study the instructions for its use.

Complex ready-made compositions of paintwork materials with various special effects should be thoroughly mixed beforehand, since the decorative component of the paint can settle with a solid suspension at the bottom of the can. You also need to make sure that the decorative additives will pass freely through the gun nozzle.

During painting and varnishing, it is important to exclude all the possibility of dust, debris or insects getting onto the surface of MDF facades. If this does happen, you must have tweezers or a needle on hand.

Significant and highly noticeable smudges of paint (soil) are removed after drying by cutting with a clerical knife, and then carefully sanded off.

Patination of painted MDF facades

As a rule, patina is used on matte colors of MDF facades with complex elements of surface and edge milling. The patinating composition is applied without preliminary priming over a layer of paint using a spray gun, roller, brush, foam rubber, tampon or other tool. After drying, the excess patina is removed by grinding with P320-400 abrasive materials or sandpaper S cotch-brite.

After thorough cleaning of the MDF facade from dust, the paint layer and patina are covered with acrylic matt varnish(130-150 gr./sq.m) and sent for drying. After 12-24 hours, the matt MDF facade can be packed and sent for storage.

Facade coating of MDF after varnishing and polishing.

In order to give the surface of the MDF facade high resistance to mechanical damage, and freshness and depth to the paints, it should be covered with transparent acrylic glossy varnish. The varnish is applied in two layers 120-150 g / sq. m, in two steps with an interval that ensures the drying of the first layer (according to the instructions).

The varnished MDF facades are sent to dry. After 1-2 days, you can start grinding, and after 5-7 days - polishing and finishing the product.

Sanding the dried lacquer layer using an eccentric sander begins with processing the facade with P1200-1500 emery cloth and ends with P3000-4000. In this case, the surface of the facade must be periodically sprayed with water in order to exclude overheating and rolling of varnish particles. At the end of the sanding process, a uniform, matte surface should be obtained.

For polishing MDF facades, an angle grinder with a hard (Novol white) foam rubber disc and an abrasive paste are used Bril -852. After applying the paste to the surface of the facade, it is necessary to grind it over the area with a machine at low speeds. Then, increasing the speed of the machine to 1500-2000, proceed directly to polishing. It is important to smoothly lead the circle from one edge to the other, first horizontally and then vertically. The polishing wheel should be slightly damp. In addition, for a greater effect, experts recommend applying a little furniture wax to the circle.

For finishing the gloss, you will need a non-abrasive paste. Siashine FINISH and a soft (Novol black) foam pad for polishing. As a result, you should get a facade with a mirrored surface.

Packaging and storage of painted MDF facades

The best option for packaging painted MDF facades will be foamed polyethylene plus corrugated cardboard... On the one hand, they will well protect products from mechanical damage. On the other hand, some paint and varnish materials continue to emit vapors of chemical compounds for some time, which condense on the surface of the facade when packed in ordinary polyethylene and leave spots on the gloss. This combination of packaging material allows the evaporation of vapors accompanying the drying process even after storage.

Efficiency of painting MDF facades

It is quite difficult to determine the benefits from the manufacture of painted MDF facades if the manufacturer is not exclusively engaged in their production and sale. According to various sources, the average cost of 1 sq. m of glossy facade is 60-80 dollars. The main share of costs falls on the remuneration of skilled workers, since the technology of painting MDF facades is based on manual labor (priming, grinding, painting, polishing), and the entire production cycle sometimes reaches 10 or more days.

In conclusion, I would like to say that the technology for painting MDF facades may differ at different enterprises, since at modern market a huge number of primers, paints, enamels, varnishes and other materials are presented, which in their technological properties are strikingly different from each other. For example, recently it has become fashionable to use automotive primers and enamels when painting MDF facades. But before painting the facade of the kitchen, it is worth remembering that the car and the kitchen have completely different functions, and it is not a fact that auto enamel is so harmless that it can be "consumed" with food.

Therefore, before painting the MDF facade with an unknown paint, you should still study the paint and varnish market. Fortunately, there are plenty of firms producing primers, paints, enamels and varnishes for working specifically on MDF. Here is a list of some of the well-established brands:

· Paintwork : Sayerlack, Votteler, Sivam, Tikkurila, Teknos, Sirca, PaliWood UM;

· Patina: Sayerlack, Borma, H esse Lignal

· Polishing pastes : 3M Perfect, Bril-852, Menzerna, Siashine FINISH.

Today MDF is considered popular and relatively available material, without which the production of kitchen panels and various furniture is indispensable. At the same time, MDF painting is often carried out, which makes the facade smoother and more durable. In addition, due to painting, the panels get a deeper and bright color that can be matched to your furniture.

Ordinary mdf panels can be made to decorate the interior by simply painting them.

Advantages and disadvantages of painting MDF panels

Painting of surfaces made of MDF is carried out not only for decorative, but also for protective purposes. The main advantages of painting panels with your own hands:

  1. Resistance of the coating to high temperatures, which allows you to put even hot dishes on the kitchen surface.
  2. High-quality painting of MDF with enamel allows you to make the facade more refined and original, giving it unique design... For example, you can decorate your furniture interesting decor in the form of pearls, mother of pearl, metallic and so on. For this, various fillers are added to the paint.
  3. Safety for health, since only high-quality paints and varnishes are used for it.

Painted MDF panels not only look better, but are also more reliable and durable

Disadvantages of painting MDF panels:

  • higher price compared to film coating;
  • when used not by itself quality paint over time, the painted facade can fade under the influence of sunlight.

Modern technology for painting MDF panels

Correct and high-quality painting must be carried out in compliance with all the rules of the technological process. To work you will need paint, wood primer or polyurethane primer egg solution, as well as varnish.

In order for the painted facade to look beautiful and not deteriorate over time, certain temperature conditions must be observed. It is best if all processes take place at a temperature of about twenty degrees. At the same time, air humidity should be in the range from 50 to 80 percent. The moisture content of wood wall panels should be 8-15%.

Before applying paints and varnishes they must be filtered with a 50-100 micron filter. It is advisable to filter twice if the paint has been stored for more than two weeks.

Selection of equipment for painting

To paint MDF with your own hands, it is advisable to have a room of at least 40 square meters, equipped with a special painting chamber and a place for grinding surfaces. In addition, a place should be provided for storing wooden blanks and finished panels.

The temperature in the room where the facade will be painted or inner surfaces, should be at least twenty degrees. The painting booth is best equipped with a cooker hood and a revolving worktop. The room for drying finished parts should have racks. The place where you intend to carry out sanding is best equipped with reliable vacuum cleaners.

Modern painting technology provides for the application of paints and varnishes and a primer using a pneumatic spray gun with a nozzle of 1.5-2 mm and a receiver compressor for at least 80 liters. If used, it is applied with a spray gun directly to the surface. Vibration grinding is best for grinding parts. grinder... Polishing is carried out with an angular grinder.

Painting stages

Preparatory stage

On preparatory stage you need to pay great attention to the processing of the plate. To finish the surface with a gloss, it is necessary to avoid raising the pile and eliminating embossing that has arisen during the production process.

The MDF façade should be milled at maximum speed to avoid raising the pile. Since the layer paintwork here is very thin, it is advisable not to leave sharp corners that can be easily knocked off. For corners, it is best to use an edge cutter with a radius of about 3 mm.

To polish the MDF facade with high quality, it is necessary to remove the surface protective wax layer from the entire surface. An eccentric sander is best suited for these jobs. For complex bends, it is advisable to use sandpaper. If it is supposed to paint the wall surfaces of MDF, including several constituent elements, then it is better to putty the joint gaps with a primer to fill the pores.

Surface priming

At the first stage, the most problematic relief areas are primed. After that, the edges of the panel are primed. At the final stage, the entire facade is treated with soil. The mortar should be applied with a primer gun first longitudinally and then transversely. At the same time, each next layer is superimposed on the previous one by 50%. This is how not only the primer is carried out, but also the painting itself.

The most effective primer application technology involves two stages. The first stage is to use a spray gun, which is applied with a layer of insulating primer. It should prevent the pile from rising and the next layers of paint to be absorbed. After that, you need to let the soil dry and sand the surface with P320-400 sandpaper.

The second stage of the primer is to apply a polyurethane primer and let it dry for at least 10 hours. Next, the surface is grinded, in places where the milling bends, Scotch-brite abrasive material is used.

For sanding after applying primer, it is recommended to use sandpaper with the number p320

Painting stage

To paint the MDF facade with high quality, it is necessary to use a spray gun with paint consumption parameters of 60-200 g / sq. m. All other parameters of the device are set depending on the type of paint and varnish used. In this regard, before painting the facade with a gloss, you need to understand the instructions for using the paint well.

Wet painting technology

After the priming stage, drying is performed at a temperature not higher than 35 degrees. Drying time is on average five hours. The wet painting technique is carried out by applying a mixture with a thickness of 120 to 140 microns. It is advisable to use polyurethane paints and varnishes.

The paint is applied using a spray gun with a certain pressure. It is possible to apply in two layers, but before coating with a second layer, the surface should be sanded. In this case, the thickness of each of the layers should not be more than 120 microns. In the next step, several layers of polyester or polyurethane primer are applied to the MDF board, simultaneously with intermediate grinding. The final layer of glossy enamel must be polished.

When applying complex compositions of paints and varnishes with different special effects, they must be mixed well. This is to ensure that the decoration details do not settle at the bottom of the can.

In addition, it is necessary to provide for the easy passage of decorative additives through the nozzle of the spray gun.

When painting and varnishing MDF surfaces, care should be taken to keep it away from dust, insects or other debris. To remove them from the painted surface, you need to have tweezers with you. If you find smudges of primer or paint, then they should be removed with a utility knife and emery cloth.

With tweezers, you can easily remove insects, pieces of dirt and other adhering excess

Powder mixture for painting

The dry method of painting consists in applying a special paint called a powder mixture. The technique involves spraying dry microparticles onto a prepared surface. After that, the applied paint is heated until it begins to melt. As a result, an almost perfect flat surface is formed.

Drying

The final stage of any painting is the drying of the panels. This procedure must be carried out under certain conditions. In particular, the air temperature should be no more than 50 degrees, and the humidity should be less than 80%.

Drying time largely depends on the conditions environment... Typically, it will take 5 to 10 hours to dry completely. In general, the lower the humidity and temperature, the faster the MDF board dries.

Conclusion

Thus, for high-quality painting all MDF boards must be observed the necessary conditions... This process consists of several steps such as sanding, priming, painting and drying.
