Is it possible to have paper-based vinyl wallpaper. How to glue vinyl wallpaper on a paper basis: stages of work and expert advice. Paper Backed Vinyl - How It Is Made

How to stick vinyl wallpapers on paper backing? How to prepare walls for renovation? Do old coatings need to be removed? Which glue to choose? In the article we are going to answer these and some other questions.

Acquaintance with the material

Vinyl wallpaper is usually understood as two materials that differ quite significantly in their performance characteristics.

  1. Foamed vinyl has a fairly significant thickness, is vapor-permeable, if necessary, it can be painted with water-dispersion paints. The main disadvantage is limited wear resistance: where walls are often touched, the coating will quickly lose its original appearance.

Cat owners: This type of wall covering is not for you.
At any age, your pet will periodically sharpen its claws, and convincing him that walls cannot be used for this is an almost unrealistic task.

  1. Thick vinyl, on the other hand, is exceptionally resistant to wear and tear and dirt and can be washed with any household detergents(except, of course, abrasive). Water vapor permeability is much lower than that of foamed vinyl.

General features

  • All wallpapers of this type are heavy, with a density above 120 g / m2. This makes it very difficult to stick them on the ceiling: the stripes can fall under their own weight.
  • The material is glued without overlap, end-to-end. The instruction is associated with the significant thickness of the coating and with the limited adhesion of most adhesives to its front surface.

  • The price of a roll is noticeably higher than that of paper and non-woven, and starts at 400 rubles per roll.

Areas of use

There are no restrictions: paper-backed vinyl wallpaper can be applied anywhere.

However, the features of foamed and dense vinyl should be considered:

  • For wet rooms (bathroom, toilet, kitchen), hallways and corridors, it is better to use thick vinyl wallpaper. The reasons are obvious: splashes and inevitable contamination will have to be washed off, and the increased wear resistance will come in handy in this case.

  • Foam cover is more suitable for living rooms and bedrooms. The increased vapor permeability will play into our hands: ventilation ducts are rarely divorced in the rooms; meanwhile, up to a third of water vapor leaves living rooms directly through the wall material.

Adhesive selection

What is the best glue for paper backed vinyl wallpaper?

In the general case, the so-called vinyl glue designed specifically for this type of coverage. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with polyvinyl chloride: its distinctive features are somewhat higher viscosity and increased adhesive properties.

Is it possible to glue paper wallpaper vinyl glue? Yes, no limits; but economic expediency enterprise is rather doubtful: vinyl glue is much more expensive than usual CMC.

In dry rooms, for gluing vinyl with your own hands, you can, however, use CMC and even flour paste. They just need to be somewhat thicker than usual: too liquid glue simply will not hold the heavy canvas on the wall.

Special case: in the bathroom and in the kitchen with PVA.
Unlike wallpaper adhesives, it is moisture resistant after drying; however, removing the wallpaper during the next repair will be problematic.

Preparing the walls

It is quite common: fragile and low adhesive coatings are removed before plaster or concrete; and primed with penetrating primer. In wet rooms an antiseptic primer is required: deprived natural ventilation walls can become a breeding ground for fungus.

How to remove old coatings?

  • To remove paper wallpaper, it is enough to moisten it abundantly. Processing with a damp cloth or spray is repeated twice with an interval of 10-15 minutes; then the coating is removed in whole strips. Leftovers.

  • The washable cover can also be removed after moistening; however, before that, its surface will have to be rolled with a needle roller or simply make frequent cuts on it with a sharp knife.
  • The whitewash is again soaked with water and removed with a spatula.
  • Enamels based on organic solvents are removed after treatment with a remover or heating with a building hairdryer.
  • Water-based emulsion can only be removed by grinding. However, PVA glue allows you to glue vinyl directly on them - if only the paint does not flake off.

Can vinyl be glued to old wallpaper?

Yes, but with certain caveats:

  • If we are talking about a single-layer paper covering without a textured pattern.
  • If, when moistened, it does not leave the wall and does not blow up with bubbles. Before gluing the vinyl, the base, as we remember, is pre-primed with a penetrating primer: it will reliably bind the paper to the plaster underneath.

Sticker

We glue vinyl wallpaper on a paper base in the same way as any others: glue is applied to a strip of wallpaper, after which it is aligned along a plumb line (first strip) or along the edge of the previous strip, pressed against the wall and smoothed out.

However, there are a number of nuances at this stage as well.

  • Wallpaper with a repeating pattern is cut into strips, the length of which is greater than the height of the room and is a multiple of the pattern step. So, for a rapport (drawing step) of 35 centimeters in a room with a height of 2.5 meters, they will have to be cut at 280 (35x8) cm.

The surplus is cut off after the sticker - along the corner or skirting boards.

  • Before sticking, the paper base must be soaked in glue. To do this, after it has been applied, the canvas is folded in half and left for a few minutes. Why fold? Just to keep the glue from drying out.
  • The seams are smoothed out and pressed against the wall as tightly as possible, without the slightest gap between the canvases. The gaps tend to expand as they dry.

  • Until the wallpaper is completely dry, the room is not ventilated.

Conclusion

We hope that the proposed material will help the reader to avoid mistakes during the next repair. WITH additional information you can learn about the types of wallpaper and the methods of their sticker by watching the video in this article. Good luck!

Pasting a room with wallpaper for some people turns out to be a serious test. But this process can be greatly facilitated if you know how to properly glue paper-backed vinyl wallpaper. This type of finishing material is currently considered the most popular and affordable. In this article, we will look at the basic steps for wallpapering a room and the recommendations of professionals in this matter.

Features of vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl-coated wallpaper is a backing coated with a layer of PVC compound. This coating has several features that have made it a very popular material. It does not fade over time, drawings do not lose their colors under the influence of straight lines sun rays... It also perfectly tolerates high humidity, which makes such wallpaper ideal option for gluing in the kitchen or bathroom.

Also, vinyl wallpaper has other positive features:

The negative features include the high sensitivity of PVC to high temperatures... Therefore, vinyl wallpaper is never glued near fireplaces and places with a high thermal effect.

The base of vinyl-coated wallpaper is usually paper or non-woven. Earlier on our site, we talked about the site, as well as about their distinctive features... Now it's worth taking apart the second type of vinyl wallpaper.

Advantages of paper vinyl wallpaper:

The disadvantages include the following features:

Choice of coverage

The choice of wallpaper will determine how the design of the room will change. If you have already purchased vinyl wallpapers and are ready to glue them, then we recommend not to waste time and go directly to step by step instructions on .

Otherwise, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the main types of vinyl wallpaper:

The final choice of coverage should be based on indoor conditions, the quality and characteristics of the walls, premises, as well as personal preferences.

Note! To calculate the amount of finishing material, you need to measure total area walls by multiplying their length with height. From the obtained value, you need to subtract the areas under the doors and windows. The result is divided by the area of one roll of the selected wallpaper. The final number will be the minimum number of rolls. For gluing, we strongly recommend taking an additional stock of up to 10% of the total amount of material.

Selection of adhesive

Buying wallpaper glue should be well thought out and considered. From wallpaper glue one of the main parameters depends - the service life of the material. A poor-quality composition will not give the necessary fastening to the wall, and the material will disappear after a few days.

Wallpaper glue should have some or all of the recommended qualities:

To calculate the amount of glue required, we will use arithmetic operations with the already known area of the room to be pasted over. Each pack of glue usually indicates how much area it should be enough for. We divide the area of the room by the value from the pack and get the amount of glue. Do not forget that the glue is spread not only on the walls, but also on the wallpaper, which means that its consumption will be great for the widow.

Important! If you have problems choosing the right adhesive, you should seek advice from professionals or sellers of the store where the adhesive is purchased. They will select the appropriate glue according to the selected type of wallpaper and the characteristics of the room, and they can also give several good advice how to properly glue paper-backed vinyl wallpaper with this adhesive.

Preparing the tools used

Before starting work, you need to prepare all the tools and materials involved in gluing. This list includes:

Pasting wallpaper, even in a small room, is a very laborious process, and it will be difficult to carry out it yourself. We recommend getting at least one assistant. This will greatly simplify pasting, and will be much more fun to work.

Preparing the walls

How smoother than a wall, which will be glued, the better they will hold. Due to the properties of paper in the process of pasting the room, the wallpaper can be easily damaged even by a slight unevenness. Therefore, before starting the main process, the walls must be prepared.

The first stage of preparation is to remove the old finishing coating... If it is old wallpaper, it is removed with a spatula. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with. For oil paint or water emulsion, use a drill with a hard felt nozzle and clean the coating clean.

The second stage in preparing the walls is leveling. At this step, a lot depends on the unevenness of the walls.

After leveling and preparing the walls, a layer of primer is applied.

Pasting wallpaper on walls

This stage is the most important, which means that you need to approach it with full responsibility. There is nothing difficult in pasting a room. It is enough to adhere to the following technology:

  • Before starting work, we completely de-energize the room, remove all sockets and switches.
  • We apply a primer to the wall. It can be a special solution or wallpaper glue. If you are using an adhesive mixture as a primer, you must include this amount when you buy it.
  • In a prepared bucket, we dilute wallpaper glue strictly according to the instructions.
  • We hang a plumb line and mark with a pencil on the wall an even strip for the first canvas.
  • The rolls are cut into strips to the height of the wall with a small margin. Depending on the need to save the drawing, the amount of the size of the stock may vary.
  • Apply the adhesive evenly to the canvas with a brush. There should be no dry areas. The strip is folded with the oiled parts together and set aside for a couple of minutes so that the surface has time to be saturated with glue.

  • We coat the wall with glue in the area where the canvas will be glued.
  • We press the panel against the wall along the marked line and begin to level it with a roller or plastic spatula. Gluing is carried out from above with alignment from the center to the edges.
  • Cut off the excess wallpaper from the bottom with a knife. You can do this right away or wait until the glue dries.
  • The next strip is glued in exactly the same way, butt to the previous canvas. Usually one sheet is glued, while the other two are impregnated with glue.
  • We repeat the steps until the room is completely pasted.
  • In the doorway and window opening the excess is cut off with a sharp clerical knife or scissors.
  • Cut out areas for sockets and switches.

This video will help you quickly understand the ongoing processes:

Advice! At the junction of the wallpaper in the corners, they are glued with an overlap. The first sheet is glued to the wall so that part of it goes into the perpendicular wall by 4 cm (more is possible, then it will be more difficult to remove the excess from under the second sheet). The adjacent canvas is glued so as to go 3 cm onto the adjacent wall. We make a through incision along the corner, cutting both canvases along the joint. We remove the excess over the first sheet and from under the second sheet. We coat the section of the wall at the joints with glue and connect the canvases.

On average, wallpaper glue dries for about two days. Only after it is completely dry can the final fit and the power supply be returned.

The following tips will help you avoid most of the difficulties when pasting a room:

Above, we figured out how to complete all the necessary preparatory work and properly glue paper-backed vinyl wallpaper. After the wallpaper glue has completely dried, you can completely complete the redesign of the room. For example, paint the wallpaper in a new color completely or partially with different paints, creating a completely the new kind premises.

Nowadays, such a coating is increasingly used for walls and ceilings. The bottom layer or base of the wallpaper is paper, the top is vinyl, which has protective functions and giving the walls a beautiful look. How to glue vinyl wallpaper on a paper basis is discussed in this article.

Vinyl wallpapers are:

In the manufacture of the material, a vinyl layer is applied to the substrate by spraying or applying a film.

  • Embossing is done.
  • The drawing is printed.
  • It can be foamed.

The coating can be hot stamped. In this case, after foaming, the top layer is rolled in two rolls: one presses the material, the other applies embossing, which allows you to get the desired texture on the surface.

This could be:

  • Silkscreen or light wallpaper... On a paper base, a thin layer of PVC is applied, and different textures are created by hot stamping. The canvases are thin and smooth, reminiscent of beautiful silk fabrics, of various designs.

  • Is a heavier material. In it, the vinyl layer can imitate natural stone, different kinds fabrics, plasters.

  • it has the thickest top layer with high strength and high relief. This creates the effects of volumetric embroidery, crinkled leather. The relief allows you to hide small irregularities in the walls.

There are chemically embossed webs with a smooth, usually glossy surface obtained by inhibition. In this case, on the vinyl layer with a printed pattern, they are applied to separate sites inhibitors - formulations that prevent foaming.

They differ:

  • Increased durability.
  • High resistance to light and moisture.
  • Easy to clean with detergents.

The choice of material depends on the quality of the walls, the purpose of the room and its style.

Tip: To hide visually small irregularities, you should use embossed and matte panels, and for even and smooth surfaces- smooth glossy canvases.

The advantages and disadvantages of wallpaper are presented in the table:

Advantages disadvantages
  • Affordable price.
  • A wide range of colors and embossed designs.
  • Environmentally friendly paper-based vinyl wallpaper. In addition to the natural components that make up the canvases, they are treated with special substances that prevent the appearance of mold.
  • Reliability.
  • Durability.
  • Resistance to negative impact changes in temperature, humidity, light.
  • The ability to clean with detergents.
  • Applying glue can damage the outer surface of the wallpaper.
  • At the beginning of work, the setting of the material is worse.
  • Difficulty gluing edges - they dry quickly.
  • Easy to tear.

Tools for the job

An approximate list of tools for performing work is presented in the table:

Tool Appointment
  • Plumb line or level.
  • Pencil.
  • Marker.
For marking a vertical line on the wall.
  • Small brush.
  • Maklovitsa.
  • Roller with light or medium bristles.
For applying glue to the wall and wallpaper.
  • Scissors.
  • Ruler.
  • Roulette
  • For cutting canvases.
  • Slices of excess wallpaper after sticking on the wall.
  • Cutting holes for sockets and switches.
Rubber rollers: large and small.For smoothing canvases on the wall.
Stepladder or sturdy tableFor the convenience of work
Rags or thick foamTo remove excess glue that comes out through the joints

This is the optimal set of tools. Some of them can be replaced, but it is necessary that the quality of wallpapering does not suffer.

For example:

  • Rubber rollers can be replaced with a regular rag, but then there is a risk of damage to the vinyl layer or wallpaper breakthrough.
  • Replace the maklovitsa with a small brush and smear the walls and canvases with it, but this increases the duration of work and labor intensity
  • Replacing a ladder or table with a stool may result in injury from falling.

Features of gluing vinyl wallpaper

Before gluing the canvases, you should get acquainted with the features of the work:

  • Who does not know how to stick vinyl wallpaper on a paper basis, has never done this before, it is better to invite a person who is already "in the know."
  • It is very important, especially for embossed vinyl sheets of large width, that the wallpaper is glued only on dry, flat surface... For this, the old coating is removed from the walls (see). All cracks are putty, the surface is leveled and completely dried.
  • The dryness of the walls is easy to check with masking tape and a piece of cellophane, which will stick to the surface. The material is left overnight. The presence of a drop of water on its inside means that the walls are not dry enough to stick vinyl wallpaper on them.
  • Plain tape is used to check the strength of the coating. To do this, a piece of material is glued to the wall and pulled back sharply. If particles remain on the inside of the tape old paint or plaster, which means that the surface needs to be prepared: remove the existing coating, overcoat, level.
  • There should be no drafts in the room. A terrible taboo: air conditioners, fans, wide open open windows... This can be allowed only after the wallpaper is completely dry.
  • You cannot glue new canvases onto old wallpapers. They must be completely removed from the walls. To do this, the canvases need to be wetted with water, wait a little, and then remove with a spatula.

Before gluing vinyl wallpaper on a paper basis, you need to carry out preparatory work.

For this:

  • The old wallpaper is being removed.
  • Areas and sagging from the existing plaster are scraped off (see).

  • The wall is carefully putty in several layers.
  • Polished sandpaper to keep the surface clean and even.
  • The walls are primed, this improves the adhesion of the coating on the wall and helps to protect the surfaces from mold and mildew.

Tip: In order for the coating to hold stronger, before gluing the vinyl wallpaper on a paper basis, you need to grease the walls and ceiling with an adhesive composition on which the canvases will be placed. Let the primer dry for 24 hours.

  • After the glue dries, a vertical line is drawn on the wall using a thread with a weight. This will be the guideline for the first wallpaper strip.
  • The electricity goes out.
  • All sockets and switches are removed.

Selection of glue and preparation of canvases

Adhesive for gluing vinyl wallpaper on a paper backing requires a special one that has greater strength than conventional paper wallpaper In addition, it is better to use glue with additives against mold and mildew for vinyl.

Tip: When purchasing glue, you need to make sure that it is suitable for gluing this material. When using PVA glue, it should be borne in mind that it is very durable, so much so that if it is necessary to remove the wallpaper from the wall, it will be very difficult to do this.

Before starting the sticker, it is more convenient to cut several canvases of the required length at once.

If you need to use wallpaper with a repeating pattern, or with embossing, you will need to align the patterns at the joints. For this, it is more convenient to number the pieces, which will allow you not to confuse them in the process.

When working with paper-based wallpaper, the glue is applied to the canvas itself, and not to the wall surface. After applying the adhesive, the wallpaper is folded with the smeared side inward, it remains so for several minutes, which will allow the material to be better saturated.

Before you start gluing wallpaper, you should watch the video. It will help to take into account all the nuances of the work.

Pasting wallpaper on the wall

Instructions for sticker vinyl wallpaper on the walls:

  • On the wall, before gluing the canvases with a plumb line or level, a line is marked strictly vertically along which the first panel is aligned.
  • Vinyl wallpaper should be glued back to back.

Tip: Foam vinyl on a paper basis stretches slightly when wet, and shrinks when dry, which makes it difficult to align the joints so that after final drying there is no overlap or they do not diverge. When spreading and leveling the panel on the wall, it must not be strongly stretched or deformed in any other way.

To get a high-quality and even joint for wallpaper without rapport, you can:

  • Stick the canvases with a small overlap.
  • Wait until they dry a little so that the sheets can move away from the wall when they are pulled.
  • With a sharp knife, a vertical cut is made in the middle of the overlap strip along the entire height of the wall.
  • The trimmed edges are removed.
  • The joints are smoothed out.
  • The aligned panels are rolled against the wall, smoothed out, air bubbles are squeezed out from under it with a roller or a special soft spatula. In this case, the movements should go from top to bottom, from the middle of the canvas to its edges.
  • Excess glue squeezed out at the edges is removed with a spatula or soft cloth.
  • Extra pieces of wallpaper are cut off at the top and bottom.

Gluing corners

The most problematic area when gluing any wallpaper with your own hands is the corners. They require special care. The order of work is shown in the photo.

The main thing you need to know, if paper-based vinyl wallpaper is used to cover the walls, is how to glue them in the corners. In this case, one of the joints must be cut through.

For this:

  • When the distance to the corner is approximately one roll wide or less, this distance is measured and about 4 centimeters is added to it.
  • A canvas of this width is glued to the wall, so that these 4 centimeters are on the second wall.
  • On the second wall, a vertical line is marked at a distance equal to the width of the canvas from the corner.
  • The next sheet is glued along this line.
  • There is an overlap of wallpaper in the corner.
  • With a sharp knife, two canvases are cut neatly along a ruler in this place, and scraps of material are removed.
  • This is how the joint turns out.
  • The joint is well coated with glue and gently smoothed out.
  • Most often, this will shift the picture. Of course, you can try to reduce it.

Pasting wallpaper on the ceiling

Using lightweight paper-backed vinyl wallpaper will reduce the adhesion stress of the glue and wallpaper.

Tip: There is not much difference when wallpapering on a wall or ceiling. The only thing is that you always have to keep your hands on weight, which makes your back quite tired. To facilitate the process, you should take more breaks.

Despite one technology for performing work, there are several points that should be taken into account (see).

These include:

  • Even if there is a starting line, which is a wall, you should make your own markings on the ceiling.
  • A straight line is drawn on the ceiling along the wall, departing from it the distance is less than the width of the roll by 10 centimeters.
  • The first roll is glued by aligning it along this line, making a neat overlap on the wall so as not to stain the wallpaper on the wall with glue.
  • For safety net, it is better to glue paper or film on the wall with masking tape, which will protect the wallpaper from glue, and at the end of the work, this protection is removed without traces. But you need to use masking tape, stationery will leave traces.

Vinyl wallpaper on a paper basis looks great. How to glue them is briefly described in the article. Observing these recommendations, performing all the work, carefully without hurrying, you can not be afraid that the canvases will disappear the next day.

Paper-based vinyl wallpaper perfectly combines durability, beautiful appearance and budget cost. They are more expensive than classic paper tapestries, but retain their attractive appearance several times longer.

Do-it-yourself lovers are interested in how to glue vinyl wallpaper on a paper basis, which glue should be chosen.

What is the difference between Erismann and Slavic materials products from Rich and Elysium.

Paper Backed Vinyl - How It Is Made

Vinyl wallpaper is a duplex with a non-woven or paper base. On the bottom layer, a smooth or foamed polyvinyl chloride is applied by a special printer or by spraying. Depending on the manufacturing technology, the surface can be smooth and embossed. In terms of strength, embossed ones made on a printer with the application of several thin layers are in the lead. They can imitate not only other finishing materials, but even fabric and embroidery.

Vinyl wallpaper smooth and embossed on a paper basis, depending on the relief and density, are divided into types:

  • heavy with a large relief;
  • compact vinyl;
  • embossed;
  • silk screen printing.

After applying a decorative layer, the wallpaper is coated with a moisture-resistant compound or varnish. This allows them to be washed. Suitable for painting heavy foam vinyl. They have relief surface, which retains its bulk after 4 layers of paint. Silk-screen printing conveys the tenderness and texture of delicate fabric. Its naturalness is emphasized by the addition of silk threads to PVC. V building stores large selection of vinyl wallpaper. The main demanded and quality materials represented by brands:

  • Caselio;
  • Elysium;
  • Zambaiti;
  • Vernissage;
  • Erismann;
  • Eden;
  • Rasch;
  • Grandeco;
  • Palette;

Many of the foreign companies produce wallpapers on a non-woven basis. They are stronger and much more expensive. Domestic manufacturers use cellulose under the base. All of them can be seen in the photo.

Advantages and disadvantages of vinyl flooring

We had to glue vinyl wallpaper on a paper basis, as in the video. Kirill decided to create his own repair channel and, in addition to showing the technology of gluing and painting on plaster and chipboard, talk about the quality of the pros and cons of the finishing material. For non-woven wallpaper on a paper basis, he prepared a text with their description.

There are few negative characteristics of such a material, let's start with them.

  1. Vinyl wallpaper low environmental friendliness, practically zero vapor permeability. They do not allow air to pass through and the walls do not breathe, it is not comfortable to rest in the room. You cannot glue them in children's rooms and bedrooms. A corridor, a living room is well suited for them, office rooms with a large flow of people. In the bathroom and in the kitchen there should be good ventilation, fungus may appear. Antifungal materials must be used.
  2. The wallpaper is heavy, the paper gets soaked and stretched. This must be taken into account when gluing. You cannot cope with such material without skills.
  3. Glue better in summer keeping up temperature regime and humidity.

The shortcomings were dealt with quickly, and Kirill began to write down the advantages of vinyl wallpaper in order to clearly tell everything on the video.

  1. The main benefit for most people is budget price wallpaper. They are more expensive than classic paper tapestries, but cheaper than all the others. finishing materials.
  2. The wear resistance of polyvinyl chloride is high to abrasion, moisture, UV radiation. Walls long years remain the same in the shade and where the whole day falls on them sunlight... The service life of the finish is more than 10 years without changing the decorative appearance.
  3. Cellulose and vinyl are good sound insulators.
  4. The surface can be painted using water-based composition, several times, changing the color and mood of the interior.
  5. The top layer is waterproof. Walls can be cleaned using conventional detergents.

The most important thing was done, now there are little things left, prepare the walls and ceiling, paste over them with wallpaper and take off a little.

Preparing walls for vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper is thick and can hide under itself minor defects... Why can't you stick them directly onto old finishes or drywall without putty. They are heavy, and over time, if the walls have a rough surface, they can fall off. There is also one harm from old tapestries, they will get wet from Cleo's wallpaper glue or other special for heavy canvas, and will quickly leave the wall, carrying away the new finish.

It will be impossible to remove them from drywall without an intermediate and reinforcing layer of putty, only with a layer of gypsum board. Vinyl wallpaper is durable and thicker than cheap paper tapestries. But all the color spots will glow through them anyway. Therefore, the wall surface must have good adhesion, strength and be uniform in color.

Quality work always pays off not only beautiful view but also the durability of the service. Therefore, Kirill and I began with the preparation of the walls.

  1. We cleaned the old coating with metal spatulas and removed the remaining glue.
  2. Dust and dirt were removed. We covered everything with a primer.
  3. Cracks and irregularities were repaired.
  4. We covered the entire wall with putty. Primed again.

Cracks, especially on the outer walls, let the cold through in winter, dew accumulates in them, which forms from the temperature drop. As a result, a fungus appears, which spoils the view and negatively affects the health of people living in the house. At the same time, the paper base gets wet from moisture, and the wallpaper may deform, warp or fall off. They can only be glued to a clean, dry surface.

Tip: When decorating walls with vinyl wallpaper, you need to remove cold bridges. Take glue and primer with antifungal additives.

How to properly dilute the adhesive composition

We stood with Kirill and argued whether the surface to be glued was already dry or it still needed to dry. Kirill needed object lesson according to the characteristics of materials. Then I took a piece of wide tape and pasted it in the middle of the wall. In the morning we came, tore off the sticky tape. She took with her small pieces of putty and moisture. This means that the drying of the finishing materials has not ended and you cannot continue to work.

Lack of paper base in high sensitivity to moisture. If there is a lot of it, the wallpaper will not stay on the wall for more than a month and will fall off easily. It is necessary not to rush, to withstand several days, to allow the putty and primer to dry completely, and only then to glue the vinyl wallpaper.

The adhesive was chosen universal for heavy wallpaper... You can buy PVA inexpensively, dilute it with water and glue it. The difference is small, only at the next repair do not expect to easily remove the remnants. The paper and glue will create a strong bond, strong as cement, and will not want to leave the wall. It will be especially difficult to tear them off the drywall and particle boards different types... Any master knows how much material he needs. But I had a student, and he should be able to do the calculation. The packaging always indicates the meter consumption, for square meter with an average layer thickness. There is also a decoding of the ratio of water and dry mixture.

To dilute the glue, the nephew measured out water at room temperature, poured it into a bucket. Then he began to pour out the dry mixture. I told my mind to hold the bag above the surface itself and began to help, stir. Correctly diluted adhesive:

  • has no lumps;
  • lie flat, without sliding, on the wall;
  • stored for up to 8 days in a diluted state.

After mixing everything until a homogeneous consistency, we gave adhesive mixture stand for 10 minutes - as indicated on the pack, and mix well again. A drill with a nozzle was not used, when high revs the mixture is saturated with air and forms a large number of bubbles that are difficult to remove. I advised Kirill to add a weak dye powder when mixing. It will allow him to see the uniformity of the application of the composition while he gains experience.

We glue, adjusting the drawing

Vinyl wallpaper is glued end-to-end. We had to correct selection picture. The package indicates specifications and cutting features. Great value has markings. It indicates which glue to dilute, whether staining is allowed. The instruction on the roll is indicated by two arrows located in different versions:

  • next to one side - one-sided pattern, cut in the same way;
  • in different directions - turn the stripes through one;
  • shifted - the pattern is cut with an offset.

Sticking wallpaper with a vertical small pattern does not require an exact fit, the selection of an ornament on others simplifies the marking. We acted step by step.

  1. We washed and dried the floor well, made marks with chalk, they should indicate minimum size stripes - the height of the room.
  2. We put and unrolled the roll, the outer layer on top.
  3. Pieces were cut strictly perpendicular to the lateral side, checked according to the drawing.
  4. When they finished one roll, they turned the whole bundle over.
  5. I took a level and a pencil to mark the vertical line for the first strip.
  6. Glue was applied with a roller and the pieces were folded into an envelope, soaked.
  7. When everything was greased, the pack was turned over.
  8. We applied glue to the wall and glued the wallpaper.

Be sure to turn the stack of glued and folded strips over. Then the time they will get wet will be the same, and they will stretch evenly. On the wall, paper-based vinyl wallpaper cannot be stretched; it will shrink when dried. The first lane was aligned with the line. The second was glued end-to-end. The strips were easily applied to the wall, glued, leaving a seam less than 1 mm. Air and excess glue were driven out with a special plastic spatula.

We drove it lightly so as not to damage the surface. The protruding glue at the joints must be washed off immediately using a sponge or napkin moistened with water. Then rub the seam with herringbone movements. To trim excess wallpaper will fit a sharp construction knife and a metal ruler. You need to trim it after 2 days, when the wallpaper is dry.

Features of pasting wallpaper in the corners

Important! How to properly glue paper-backed vinyl wallpaper so that the joints are invisible. The best way, allowing you to quickly paste over complex wall configurations - to overlap them. You just need to check the coincidence of the picture. The more complex and brighter the ornament, the more difficult it is to fit the stripes. In the corner, the strip is glued with the transition to another wall. The approach is not more than 2 cm. If the canvas is going to folds, notches are made.

The second strip is glued from the corner. If the pattern is large and should go over, it is cut off along a ruler until it matches. When dry, you can remove the excess layer. Just cut vertically with a ruler, clean the rest of the first strip under the second sheet, apply a little glue and press everything well. The room in which the obi are glued should not be damp. Excessive dryness is also unacceptable. Moderate humidity, temperature 15 - 20 degrees and no drafts. Air movement is harmful to the drying of glue and paper backing.

A large relief is better for painting.

Is it possible to paint paper-based vinyl wallpaper, and how to do it correctly. For painting, choose vinyl with a deep relief. Silk-screen printing from paint loses its elegant look and is not suitable for staining. The wall must first be cleaned of dust, walk with a vacuum cleaner. The paint is chosen water-based or acrylic. Apply with a roller, in a thin layer. Try to keep the paper base as wet as possible. In order for the color to lay down evenly and look good, the next color must be selected darker than the existing one.

It is important not to repaint because of bald spots. The tone is applied immediately, with a soft roller. Then, when dry, you can take a brush and create an antique effect. Walk along the ledges with a contrasting color. In the kitchen and bathroom, acrylics are better, in the hallway and living room, water-based.

Since many people prefer to make repairs with their own hands, sooner or later the question arises before them: how to glue vinyl wallpaper on a paper base or on a non-woven fabric? Vinyl wallpaper has rightfully taken its place among the most popular finishing materials. They have indisputable advantages with a minimum of disadvantages: strong, durable, washable and beautiful. The sheer variety of colors, patterns and textures is one of their most attractive qualities.

Vinyl varieties

In the process of making wallpaper, vinyl is applied to the base - paper or non-woven - using special printers that create a planned pattern on the surface of the canvas. Then it is possible to cover it with gold or silver embossing, a layer of varnish is applied on top. In the final stage, a special impregnation is applied to the surface, which allows you to wash and clean the wallpaper from dirt.

How to glue vinyl wallpaper? The technology depends on the nature of the basis of the canvas. There are two varieties of vinyl wallpaper.

  • Vinyl on non-woven... It is a strong non-woven base that does not deform, tear or wrinkle. The cost of such wallpaper is slightly higher than that of paper-based wallpaper, but when glued, they behave more obediently. In this case, the glue is applied only to the wall.
  • Wallpaper on a paper basis... They differ in an affordable, democratic price, but when glued they are more capricious. In comparison with non-woven wallpaper, they are heavier, they can tear and wrinkle.

A more expensive option for vinyl wallpaper is silk screen printing. The top layer of the canvas is made using a special technology and resembles silk fabric in texture. Such wallpapers are more durable and look very elegant and unusual.

There is paintable vinyl wallpaper. They can be painted from 5 to 15 times, changing the interior of the room without "re-sticking" the walls.

Vinyl wallpapers vary in density:

  • made of foamed vinyl;
  • smooth vinyl;
  • made of hard vinyl.

The heavier the wallpaper, the more difficult it is to glue it, although the technology of work remains the same. On the other hand, denser varieties better hide wall blemishes.

Vinyl has its drawbacks. The most significant of them is that it does not allow air and moisture to pass through, "does not breathe." Therefore, it is not recommended to glue it in children's rooms and poorly ventilated rooms. Some manufacturers are already successfully solving this problem by making micropores for ventilation in the upper coating of the canvas.

Surface preparation

Non-woven models do not cause any special difficulties in gluing, therefore, let us take a closer look at the question of how to glue vinyl wallpaper on a paper basis. First you need to prepare the wall surface.

  1. Delete old wallpaper... To do this, you can slightly moisten them with water using a wide brush-brush or a fur roller. Allow to dry slightly and separate from the wall with a knife and a wide metal spatula.
  2. It is recommended to cover up dark spots - they can show through. Basically, vinyl cloth does not shine through, but very light colors in an illuminated place can give a "surprise".
  3. Vinyl does not need to be perfectly flattened, with a few exceptions. Expanded vinyl is very popular precisely because it successfully hides minor wall defects. But for silk-screen printing, the surface should be perfect, since even the slightest flaws are highlighted. Non-woven models are also more demanding on the surface than paper-backed vinyl.

    Note: matte and embossed wallpaper hide surface imperfections better than plain and glossy ones.

  4. Level the wall with plaster mix or putty. In case of severe defects, the wall can be closed with plasterboard.
  5. After the leveling compound has dried, the wall is swept with a brush, removing dust and dirt. Next, you need to prime the surface. A special primer can be purchased from hardware stores and used according to instructions. It is good if the mixture includes substances that prevent the growth of mold and mildew. In principle, you can prime the wall and wallpaper glue diluted to very liquid state(if the glue manufacturer specifies this in the instructions), but there will be no savings in this.

Wallpaper glue

Highly important point in the question of how to properly glue vinyl wallpaper, is the choice of glue. Only a special compound is used, the packaging of which is marked "for vinyl". Usually this glue is called "for heavy wallpaper", it is used to glue vinyl on a paper basis, non-woven, textured wallpaper.

A good quality adhesive has the following characteristics:

  • easily diluted with water;
  • does not form lumps;
  • includes an antifungal additive;
  • practically odorless;
  • does not leave stains;
  • slippery texture - makes it possible to correct the wallpaper while gluing;
  • in a diluted form it is stored for 10-14 days.

Dilute the glue according to the instructions, strictly observing the ratio of powder and water. If you take more powder, the glue will be very thick, difficult to apply, and lumps remain. If there is more water, the solution will turn out to be too liquid, there is a risk that the wallpaper will come off. How to prepare the glue? To do this, the powder is poured into water, holding the pack near the surface. Stir thoroughly, breaking the lumps, stir again after 2-3 minutes and leave to swell for required time(usually 5-10 minutes).

Note: The consumption of glue for heavy wallpaper is approximately 250 g per 6-10 rolls or 125 m 2 of the wall when primed.

For gluing vinyl wallpaper, you can also use PVA glue.

Features of gluing vinyl wallpaper

How to glue vinyl wallpaper with a paper backing? It is better to do this together - one person at the top on a ladder or table, the other at the bottom. With the proper skill, you can work alone, but you have to jump up and down all the time. They close windows and doors in the room, turn off ventilation and air conditioning, otherwise the glued strips will dry quickly and unevenly and may come off. When working with paper-based wallpaper, glue is applied to the wallpaper, while when gluing with non-woven wallpaper, it is applied to the wall.

  1. Cut the stripes, matching the pattern. Do not adjust the top carefully, leave an allowance of about 5 cm. Leave the same distance at the bottom of the strip.
  2. Fold the stripes on a clean floor or thick colorless paper with the pattern down.
  3. Coat with glue using a wide, flat brush. The holding time for the glue to soak into the paper base is a few minutes, depending on the type of wallpaper (see instructions on the roll packaging). The time should be the same, otherwise one strip will swell and stretch more, and the other weaker, which can skew when gluing. While the paper is swelling, fold the strip in two or four times with the wrong side inward (like an accordion, but do not allow creases). As a rule, one or two strips swell while the previous one is glued. Pasted it - missed the next one, left it to swell, took it already matured, and so on.
  4. Begin to glue from the corner of the room. The first strip is leveled using a plumb line. For ease of orientation, you can mark vertical lines on the wall. The strip is applied at the top, aligned vertically, then pressed by hand or with a roller in the center along the entire length. Using a roller, smooth the entire surface completely, expelling excess glue and air. The edges are rolled in from the center to the sides. When working, it is better to use a roller with a fine brush.
  5. Remove excess glue with a clean cloth. If the edges are poorly glued or dry, glue is additionally applied with a thin brush.
  6. The main point in the question of how to properly glue vinyl wallpaper is that they are glued end-to-end. The next strip is applied to the first, making sure that the web does not stretch, otherwise a gap may form. Expanded vinyl will stretch more.
  7. If, after drying, small cracks still appear, separate the edge of the strip from the wall, coat with glue, let the paper get wet and try to gently stretch the canvas towards the gap, moving it with your hands.

The gluing process will be easier if you choose companion wallpaper that separates the wall into bottom and top. In this case, the stripes will not be so long, they are easier to deal with. First you need to stick the upper vertical stripes, and then, slightly overlapping them - the lower horizontal ones.

Vinyl wallpaper dries for two days at room temperature and without drafts.

Pruning

The remaining allowance is cut off after the wallpaper is completely dry.

  • Use a sharp construction knife or the blade will tear.
  • The top and bottom are trimmed using a long ruler. The bottom is run under the plinth.
  • Holes for sockets and switches are also cut after the canvas has dried. Before pasting the wall, remove the cover from the sockets and switches, and in order not to lose space, make a puncture with a pencil in the center. The slot is first led crosswise from the center, then carefully cut along the edge. When gluing wallpaper, it is advisable to turn off the sockets so that they do not jerk on a damp surface.

That's all about how to properly glue vinyl wallpaper. In the process of work, the main thing is not to rush and carefully combine the edges, checking the strips by level. The use of "sliding" glue provides a great advantage for beginners, since during operation the wallpaper can be moved along the wall, it is easy to straighten creases, and if applied to the surface is unsuccessful, it can be detached from the wall and reapplied.
